IT seems strange that a theory so devoid of value in its application to our practical problems should attract such widespread acclaim. This appears still more remarkable when one considers the foundation on which it is built. The criticism naturally suggested is as follows: First; the special theory of relativity is based on an assumption which is counter to the fundamental conception of relative motion. Second; the theory claims only a slight modification of Newtonian mechanics-a modification so minute that, even if true, it would have no practical value in its application to any visible occurrence here on earth.

DESTRUCTION of the plants, machines, utilities, tools, materials, and other essentials for peacetime living penalizes not only the owners of the materials destroyed, but the world as a whole. Specifically, the fundamental fallacy of any proposal for the in- discriminate destruction of the German industrial system is that it fails to differentiate between the wartime and the peacetime economy of the Reich. We are for one simple, clear objective-an effective industrial means to keep Germany from starting another war. This objective should not be con- fused, especially before the war is even won, with the appropriate punishment of Germany or with the international arrangements for the long future to be made around the peace table by the representatives of the Allied Nations after victory is achieved. This paper, therefore, does not deal with broad, complex postwar questions of diplomacy and international policy. "Unconditional surrender" implies disarmament of the German armies, the surrender of all arms, munitions, air- planes, and other ordnance material in stock piles or in process. It also should include the elimination of all German war production facilities, such as ordnance plants, munitions plants, and submarine works, and the control of raw materials required by war industries.

This paper describes results of an investigation of fracture during tube expansion of 5052 and 5754 aluminum seam-welded tubes to optimize the forming of aluminum tubes during hydroforming. The tubes were produced in laboratory by press forming of tubular blanks and pilot-scale high frequency induction welding. The effect of property mismatch between the weld and base metal has been investigated. The material work-hardening was obtained by roll forming of sheet blanks in the 0-temper and H32 temper condition. The results showed that a significant work-hardening can be present in aluminum tube without causing weld fracture during tube expansion. The work-hardening increases the yield-strength mismatch between base metal and weld. Annealing reduces the hardness of base metal leading to more uniform deformation during tube expansion. As a result the occurrence of weld fracture is reduced. The study showed significant deformation of the welds during tube expansion. Weld thinning can be as large as parent-material thinning before fracture. To avoid fracture at the weld joint, good formability and high yield strength of the weld is needed. FEM simulation showed that minimizing the width of the weld joint can reduce thinning of the weld.

Particle breakage is an essential part of mineral processing. The aim is to reduce run of mine mineral ore to an optimal size for liberating target minerals and for subsequent recovery by separation processes such as flotation. This size reduction is typically accomplished in a series of stages in a grinding circuit tailored to the properties of the particular mine ore. Commonly this involves two or more classes of equipment starting with crushers, followed by SAG mills and then sometimes ball mills. Occasionally, high pressure grinding rolls or other novel devices are substituted. Broadly, energy consumption increases and energy efficiency decreases with the fineness of the material produced by each piece of equipment. For many operations, up to 50 or 60 per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions from a plant arise from the operation of the comminution circuit with the majority produced by the finest grinding parts, such as the SAG and ball mills. Wear of mill liners and grinding media also add to greenhouse gas emissions generated by their manufacture. The need for continual cost reduction and increasing regulatory and social pressure relating to greenhouse emissions create a strong need for improvements in comminution energy efficiency. Traditional experimental and modelling approaches are not well placed to create the required insights into comminution fundamentals or facilitate radical step changes in performance. This paper discusses the role that advanced modelling (based on coupled DEM and CFD) can play in improving the energy efficiency and performance of existing mainstream grinding equipment and in the development of new ones with radically superior performance. Achieving this goal will also require an improved understanding of ore breakage and methods to include sufficiently realistic breakage models within the DEM models. Developmental issues for the modelling and the critical need for validation of the advanced model features are highlighted.

The Bradshaw Section 5A Interceptor involves the construction of two miles of 108-inch, finished diameter tunnel in dry soils. Excavation is generally by Lovat TBM with ribs and lagging support. The tunnel is beneath a recreational parkway and stringent measures have been enacted to preserve the parkway and minimize disruption to the neighborhood. Apart from these constraints, the project would have been unremarkable but for the intervention of CalOSHA and the local fire department who ordered extraordinary fire protection measures. The paper discusses the cause and effect of these measures and comments on the potential repercussions for other projects.

While investigating on the aerodynamic resistance of airways supported with peripheral timber sets, at regular intervals, the following theoretical equations were developed by the author to estimate the resistance coefficient of such airways: [ ] for S < 1, where f is Darcy-Weisbach resistance coefficient of the airway, C is modified drag coefficient of the supporting member, D is equivalent diameter of the bare airway, 8 is ratio of the approach velocity over the sets to the average velocity of the bare airway, A is cross-sectional area of the bare airway, a is projected frontal area of the sets, A., is cross-sectional area of the air stream at the vena contracta inside the set, S is spacing of the sets, f, is resistance coefficient of the bare airway, l is length of aerodynamic influence of sets, p is perimeter of the bare airway, p, is setted portion of the perimeter of the bare airway, pe is unsetted portion of the perimeter of the bare airway, and P shielding factor. The equations were verified experimentally in a model rectangular airway supported with one- (bars), three-, and four-piece sets of square-section timber of three different sizes and were found to hold true. The work has been further extended to one-, three-, and four-piece sets of round timber of 2.6, 3.2, and 3.8 cm diam with the same experimental set up. Tests have been carried out for spacings of 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, and 200 cm over a regime of flow defined by the Reynolds number (with respect to the equivalent diameter of the bare duct) ranging from about 1.5 X 106 to 5 X 106 using the same experimental techniques. The values of f are calculated in the manner indicated in [Ref. 1]. Unlike with square-section timber, the resistance coefficient f of the airway setted with round timber shows a distinct variation with the Reynolds number of flow. This conforms to observations made by Sales and Hinsley.2 In order to have a comparable value of f for all types of sets with all sizes of timber, it was necessary to select the value of f at a fixed Reynolds number of flow. Since f is chiefly a function of the drag coefficient of the sets, the appropriate Reynolds number RE is that with respect to the diameter of timber in the set. Considering the diameters of timber used and the regime of flow over which measurements were made, f was chosen at a value of RE = 20,000 in all cases. The f vs. S curves are maximal in nature and in conformity with theory, the f vs. 1/S curves are straight lines up to a value of S = 1 beyond which they show a distinct flexure. The observed values of 1, the length of aerodynamic influence of sets, agree with the relation 1 = 42 e, developed for square-section timber sets, thus suggesting that the shape of timber has little influence on the length of aerodynamic influence. The value of the modified drag coefficient CD for round timber was calculated in the same way as for square timber in Ref. 1, taking the contraction factor Z = 1.5 for round-edged constrictions. CD has an average value of 0.96 with a standard deviation of 6.08% as compared to the free stream drag coefficient of 1.2 at RE = 20,000 for long cylindrical obstructions The shielding factor [ ] is plotted against S/1 in [Fig. 1]. The curves are more or less independent of the size of timber, but are different for the different types of sets, possibly due to their different degree of symmetry. Values of f calculated by the author&apos;s [Eqs. 1 and 2], using experimental values of CD&apos; and [ ] and taking I = 42 e, are plotted in [Fig. 2] against experimentally measured values of f for different types of sets with different sizes of round timber. The values agree closely with a standard deviation of only 5%, thus establishing the veracity of the theoretical equations developed by the author for round timber as well. A comparison was made between the Xenofontowa4 equations (the only other reasonable relations available for the estimation of the resistance coefficient of supported airways) and the author&apos;s [Eqs. 1 and 2] by comparing in [Fig. 3] the values of the resistance coefficient f computed by the Xenofontowa relations with those experimentally measured by the author. Samples of low-grade oxide manganese ores were procured from two southern Utah properties by examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines during an investigation of manganese mineral deposits of continental United States. A 2-ton lot of ore was obtained from the Blackbird group of mining claims in Paiute County, 11 miles southeast of Marysvale, Utah. The deposit was described as an intrusive sheet or sill of altered brecciated rhyolite cemented together by manganese oxide minerals. A 2-ton sample from the Black John property, situated 32 miles northeast of Kanab, Kane County, Utah, was taken from open cuts on the vein. The blanket-type vein deposit consisted of nodules and streaks of manganese imbedded in compact gray clay.

"SUMMARYThe Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Projects were set up on only the most promising properties. A preliminary examination of the Rio Grande property was made by Bureau of Mines engineers in July 1942 and the property was examined again in July 1943.The Geophysical Branch of the Bureau undertook a Geophysical survey of the area in November 1943 and was intermittently active in the district until June 1946. The major portion of their work was done from June 191 to November 1945. Favorable areas for exploration were recommended by the Geophysical Branch of the Geological Survey, 3/ and all holes were drilled in them.Two projects were set up by the mining branch in an endeavor to find ore bodies on the strength of the geophysical information."

This report describes the results of laboratory studies on leaching of copper ores.tlf These studies are the first step of a program for the investigation of in situ leaching of tabular, metalliferous ore bodies.(2) The basic steps required in the development of an in situ process are: 1. Leachability - the ability to dissolve the metal values from the ore under in situ conditions must be demonstrated. 2. Ore Preparation - the ore must be prepared so that sufficient contact with the solution can be attained. 3. System Design - integrated in situ systems must be designed and studied for engineering feasibility. 4. Economic Feasibility - the economics of the system must be shown to be economically feasible and competitive. 5. Environmental Feasibility - the loss of reagents into the environment must be investigated. 6. Pilot Scale Testing - the feasibility of the system must be demonstrated on a sufficiently large scale. The studies described in this report were concerned only with the first step of the program, viz., leachability. Native and sulfide copper ores from the Michigan copper district were selected as model ores for these studies. Aqueous amnonia solutions were chosen as the solvents to be investigated. In this study carbonate (CO3, HCO3, H2CO3) was used exclusively as the anion. In keeping with custom it is referred to as carbon dioxide and concentrations are ex- pressed in terms of CO2. As amostras foram recozidas com diferentes temperaturas de recozimento final, resultando em diferentes tamanhos de grão. As perdas histeréticas e B50 foram medidos. Os resultados de B50 mostraram que não houve variação de textura entre as ligas com diferentes %Si. Por fim, os resultados não mostraram variações da energia dissipada pela perda histerética com adição de %Si.

This paper provides an overview of methods for measuring tunnel deflection and construction’s effects on the surrounding environment during and post construction. It will also review illustrative case studies from within Australia and overseas that are most relevant to local construction conditions. Systems illustrated include; vibrating wire and fibre optic strain gauges, extensometers, load cells and piezometers. A novel system using radar interferometry which requires no contact to the structure will also be investigated.In Australia, the majority of tunnelling activity occurs in urban areas (or in the case of mining in rural area) with limited seismic risk. However, the unexpected movement of tunnels is an important factor for structural engineers to monitor. During construction, monitoring is focused on the performance of the tunnelling lining, the supports under real conditions and the effects on surrounding infrastructure. After construction, monitoring will determine the effect of live traffic loads and can also evaluate the durability and any degradation of the tunnel. The aging of some tunnels or the forces subjected by nearby major construction can directly lead to a decrease in structural stability and deformation.The conventional way of inspecting and monitoring those tunnel movements is to have engineers physically enter the tunnel and carry out the measurement work. Manual techniques include tunnel wall convergence checks or total station measurement. However the associated costs are high and measurement process is difficult as some tunnel areas are inaccessible and the data collection interval is limited by the speed of the operator.Automated sensor networks utilising extensometers, fibre optics sensors or strain gauges can be used on tunnel segments or surrounding buildings. Potential problems associated with groundwater inflows are a major concern to many Saskatchewan mining operations. Rock mass behaviour and stability have been linked to groundwater inflow potential. An estimate of the hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass is an important factor for assessing groundwater inflow potential. This paper presents a procedure that was developed to conduct air permeability tests, for estimating the hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass. Tests were conducted near underground excavations with the goal of assessing links between measured air permeability, rock mass classification and the rock mass response to adjacent excavations. Measured changes in air permeability corresponding to the distance from excavation boundaries may indicate changes to joint properties such as joint aperture, continuity and frequency. This study outlines the instrumentation, the experimental and analytical procedures, and the preliminary results from testing.

This paper presents an overview of a program PC-BC developed for application to the design and evaluation of block cave operations. Conventional mine planning software tools are not well suited to the evaluation of this type of deposit. The paper looks at the modelling approach as applied to a block cave mining project. The following steps are described:Initial preparation of data including block models, draw point footprint geometry and draw cone geometry. Computation of individual draw point reserves. Procedure for modelling of vertical mixing of material within each draw point and subsequent determination of the best height of draw for each draw point based upon an economic cut-off value. Smoothing of draw heights amongst neighbouring draw points to produce a realistic draw envelope. Mineable reserves within the envelope are then computed. Tools for preparation and evaluation of various production schedules. This includes definition of draw rates, and rates for commissioning new draw points. In an operating mine, the capture and analysis of daily draw tonnages is important. How PC-BC accommodates this is described as well as the processes for depleting the draw column reserves. In the 12 years since the program was first developed, it has been used on a number of projects for feasibility studies and operating mines. Some practical examples of the use of the program in these projects are presented. Finally, some commentary on the sensitivity of various parameters is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the overall footprint design.

This article reports on the current state of an ongoing research project which is aimed at implementing intelligent models for hardly predictable hazard scenarios identification in construction sites. As past evidences showed that no programmatic action can deal with the unpredictable nature of many risk dynamics, we tried to survey on how the current approach for safety management in the construction industry could be improved. In our previous research the use of Bayesian networks elicited from subjective knowledge were preliminarily tested. Those networks might be meant as a reliable knowledge map about accident dynamics and they showed that a relevant ratio of occurrences fall in ?hardly predictable hazards? class, which cannot be warded off by programmatic safety measures. This paper reports the second outcome of our research project, which focused on the development of first elementary fragments, regarding the occurrence of a possible ?hardly predictable scenario?. Instead of experts? contributions (who, over their carrier, seldom incurred in accidents), we used ?legal cases? as an accurate source of information. They suggested which categories of ?hidden hazard scenarios? are more likely to happen. We found that the most frequent hidden hazard scenarios are linked to operator?s negligence and abnormal behavior, e.g. irregular removal of scaffolding?s components, unprotected openings, improper use of PPE, etc. Every pattern determined by legal cases has been formalized by a fragment (i.e. elementary network) of the overall Bayesian network. Finally, all the elementary networks were integrated into a comprehensive intelligent tool for realtime hardly predictable hazards prevention. The final setup, asked for interfacing these intelligent models to a low-level sensor network and used to feed them with inputs about the current state of the context, is discussed too.

"Over the last 30 years the average grade of mined ore bodies has significantly decreased while the proportion of waste removal has in many cases more than doubled. This has been identified as prime reason of a major increase in energy consumption and decrease in productivity across mining operation. Metal coarse preconcentration of ROM feed grades by size rejects low grade gangue/waste material in the size range of 10-100 mm prior to grinding, typically before primary crushing. This relies on propensity of metal to preferentially deport in the fine size fractions after breakage. Metal preconcentration by size has the potential to increase energy efficiency and therefore improve mining productivity on unit of metal basis. Results of an extensive belt cut sampling campaign conducted at a major Australian Au-Cu mine operation show that for some samples between 90% of Au and 80% of Cu is in 40% of the mass at -50 mm fraction. This indicates that low grade coarse material can be removed from the circuit, doubling feed grade at half of the tonnage and therefore improve energy efficiency per unit metal produced. This response, however presents significant variability in the same order as other processing attributes such as impact hardness and flotation recovery. This has led to development of geometallurgical laboratory tests using blast hole chips and drill core facilitating mapping and population of coarse metal preconcentration signatures in long term resources and short term production models. Preferential Cu deportment by size at drilling scale can be recognised, however scales up factors are required to transform laboratory results to production responses. At 50 % of mass the drilling products underestimate the belt cut responses by 20-30 %. Bulk sampling campaign with blast hole and drill core samples spatially related was also conducted to investigate in more detail the difference between production scale and drilling scale preconcentration responses."

Mintek conducted test work to study the effect of media wear when using Mintek’s Milling-in-raffinate technology. The grinding media consisted of high-chrome and ceramic balls. The tests were conducted using a laboratory 5L 316 stainless-steel rubber-lined mill. Magotteaux supplied the high-chrome and ceramic balls. The raffinate was synthetically prepared using a typical Cu/Co (2.2 g/L Cu, 3 g/L Co) composition. The milling rate, media wear, mill, leach extraction efficiencies, gangue acid consumption, and residence time were studied. The tests indicated that the high-chrome balls had a higher corrosion rate than the ceramic balls. The ceramic corrosion rate was lower than 0.1 mm/y. The highchrome balls performed better during the leach stages with faster milling time, higher leaching efficiencies for both Cu and Co, lower gangue-acid consumption, and lower residence time

Recently, the natural fibers have been studied as alternative reinforcement material to the use of synthetic fibers. Aiming to improve the properties of natural fibers composites, it is investigated the use of natural fibers fabrics, since they provide multidirectional reinforcement and enables the introduction of a larger fiber volume fraction. In this work, it was investigated the tensile behavior of the epoxy matrix composites reinforced with different volumefractions offabric made of Ramie, a highly resistant lignocellulosic fiber. The specimens were made by pressing the fabric with liquid resin to guarantee total impregnation, and then cutting the fabric in the mold format. Finally ,the fabric layers were placed into the mold with the liquid resin and catalyst. They were cured for 24 h and tested. The results revealed an increase in the tensile strength and almost no effect in the elastic modulus with the increase of fabric volume fraction.

"Construction of the longest road tunnel in Mexico is part of Acapulco’s alternate roadway to the scenic roadway project. This article provides a brief summary regarding details of the construction since the project began. Work was done by skilled engineers and Mexican workers that includes outstanding execution of the work in an urban and tourist area. This project will have a strong impact on the steady development of the port of Acapulco.Project locationAcapulco’s Alternate Roadway Project is currently under construction in the city of Acapulco, located in the Guerrero state of Mexico. It is an 8-km (5-mile) long roadway that starts at the Icacos neighborhood, heading toward Acapulco’s airport, crossing a drill-and-blast tunnel that is 3,160 m (10,350 ft) long under Veladero Park, a mountainous area. The tunnel overburden reaches a depth of 380 m (1,250 ft) approximately at the central point of the horizontal alignment, and continues with a 4-km (2.5-mile) long elevated road to connect to the existing Viaducto Diamante toll road (Fig. 1).Tunnel construction has already been finished using two portals for drilling and blasting operations; Brisamar Portal on the west side and Cayaco Portal on the east side (Fig. 2).Geometric dataOnly two main excavation cross-sections were considered in the executive design. The first one corresponds to the running tunnel for a three-lane vehicle section, with crosssection areas between 120 and 130 m2 (1,290 and 1,400 sq ft) taking into consideration different geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 3).The second one corresponds to eight emergency bays, each one 50 m (164 ft) long, laid down within the tunnel outline, located at 400 m (1,312 ft) from each one with excavation cross-sections between 156 to 169 m2 (1,680 to 1,820 sq ft), in accordance to geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 4).The tunnel’s horizontal alignment is completely straight, having a small curve within the vertical alignment on Cayaco portal, because there were some differences in levels when tunnel excavation started. Tunnel slopes were designed in such a way that rainwater does not run down into the tunnel at any time."
