Included in the program of the Rare and Precious Metals Station, Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines at Reno, Nev., are investigations of treatment methods for ores representative of various mining districts throughout the country. The samples received for this work may come from areas only recently explored or from newly discovered ore deposits in older mining districts. The present investigation deals with a case of the latter type, the. ample having come from a section that has a past record of considerable precious. metals production. The application of current treatment methods to this type of ore seems to offer excellent possibilities of satisfactory economic results. Definite identification of the silver mineral in this ore asthe chloride cerargyrite, AgCl, adds considerable interest to, the investigation, as in many cases where silver occurs in comparatively small amounts in an ore it is not possible to identify the particular mineral carrying the silver or else it is contained in or combined with other more common minerals. Cerargyrite is the "horn silver" of the bananza period and is mentioned in many accounts of pioneer mining of high-grade ores The occurrence of this mineral in finely disseminated form it a low-grade ore is believed to be unusual. The sample investigated was obtained from the' Bullfrog District neat Beatty, southwest Nye County, Nevada. The ore contained 16.7 ounces of silver per ton of ore, 0.007 ounce gold, and 0.32 percent copper in a silicious gangue, with accessory minerals, including iron oxides and scorodite; the hydrous iron arsenate.

This plant was built in 1907 at the Bankhead mines to manufacture briquettes by the Zwoyer process under license from the Zwoyer Fuel Go., of New York, N. Y. The building was constructed to contain two units, each of a capacity of 10 tons per hr.; one unit was installed at the time the building was constructed, and the second unit is now being built. The coal used is an anthracite, which is more friable than that of Pennsylvania, and, as a consequepce, a larger percentage of dust or waste is produced, which was formerly thrown upon the slack-pile as waste, but is now passed to the " dust-bin " in the breaker, from which it is conveyed to the briquette-plant. An average analysis of the coal, published by Lewis Stockett and 13. R. Warden,' is as follows: Per Cent. Moisture,.........0.50 Volatile,..8.00 Fixed carbon,... 83..50 Ash,.......8.00 Total,.100.00 Sulphur,.........0.40 per cent. The plant is run under two 12-hr. shifts, the force consisting of 1 superintendent for both shifts, 1 engineer for each shift, 1 briquetter for each shift, 1 helper for each shift, 1 laborer cleaning up for each shift. In the pitch-melting house, 2 men are on duty for one shift. The steam for the engine is furnished from a central boiler-plant, which also supplies steam for the breaker, the electric light and power-plant, machinery-shop, and boiler-shop. Froth flotation is widely used for upgrading of ores and other materials. Efficiency of flotation depends on many parameters, including type, chemical structure and dose of flotation reagents. Selection of a proper frother in flotation depends on the material used, necessary dose of frother and its selectivity. The selectivity of flotation can be characterized by proper separation factors and indices. In this paper separation selectivity and power of frothers were evaluated basing on separation data for a given material and frother, plotted as the recovery of the useful component in the concentrate versus the recovery of the remaining components in the tailing. Such a plot is called the Fuerstenau upgrading curve. The selectivity was defined as the location of the whole upgrading curve in relation to no and ideal separation lines, expressed on the scale from 50 (no separation) to 100% (ideal separation). In turn, the flotation power was defined as the dose of frother to reach a certain upgrading level at which recoveries of the useful and unwanted components are equal. The power and selectivity of frothers were determined for the Kupferschiefer stratiform copper ore floated in the presence of a fixed amount of xanthate and varying doses of frothers using a laboratory flotation machine. Basing on the separation results for different poly(propylene glycol) (CnH2n+1O(C3H6O)mH, CnPm) and poly(ethylene glycol) (CnH2n+1O(C2H4O)mH, CnEm) alkyl ethers, it was found that the concentrate yield and recovery of copper as the useful component in the concentrate were greatly influenced by the type and dose of frother. However, the same results plotted in the form of the Fuerstenau upgrading curve clearly indicated that the selectivity of frothers was similar, while their power was different. It proves that both selectivity and power of frothers are useful parameters for characterizing flotation systems.

"A survey of our knowledge in the field of rock mechanics is presented from the viewpoint of applications in the mining industry. Aspects of rock mechanics of special interest to the industry are enlarged upon, with emphasis on the avoidance of over-generalization. The relationship between fundamental and practical rock mechanics is discussed, and the need for cooperation between the university and industry to further our knowledge of -useful rock mechanics is emphasized. An attempt has been made to establish the scope of rock mechanics, as applied to problems in the mining industry. This is brought about by projecting rock mechanics as a tool to be intelligently used rather than magic, capable of producing ""miracles."" Continued education is important for individuals engaged in the application 0f rock mechanics in the mining industry. The scope of this education is discussed from a viewpoint of better communication between industry and the education and/or re-search establishments engaged in this work.Finally, the dangers of over-emphasis on rock mechanics are mentioned, but a justification of the in-vestment in rock mechanics programs in mines is also presented."

Concentradora "Dana Aida" (100 t/d capacity) was built in 1971-1972 to treat dumps and ores containing mixed oxide-sulfide copper-gold-silver minerals from two veins. The veins, Don Felipe and aria are about 150 m apart, but are distinctly different mineralogically. The deposit is near San Juan de Guadalupe, Durango. Mexico. All new process equipment was manufactured locally, in or near Torreon, Coahuila. Sampling, ore testing, flowsheet design, plant design, drawings purchasing, financing, etc. was planned and directed by two engineers. Construction was executed by local miners and common labor (largely agricultural). The paper presents detailed costs for equipment and construction. The subsequent breaking-in operation is discussed.

The 26th international APCOM symposium, hosted by The Pennsylvania State University, was held Sept. 16 to 20, 1996 in University Park, PA. Conducted about every 18 months throughout the world, APCOM symposia focus on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry. The APCOM International Council is the governing body of the symposia and determines the symposium’s locations and sponsorships. This group is composed of the nine permanent (voting) members. They include the University of Arizona, Colorado School of Mines, Pennsylvania State University, Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc., Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Technical University of Berlin, Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This paper comprises a description of on-stream analysis instrumentation, including sample handling, X-ray optics and data processing. It also includes a discussion of some typical applications of an on-stream analyzer as related to the mineral processing industry. Introduction T WO automatic X-ray spectrometers have been developed for the simultaneous analysis of as many as six elements in a given sample. These instruments, namely the On-Stream Analyzer and the new Vacuum Simultaneous Spectrometer, have been designed specifically for process control in industry where large numbers of static samples or a number of flowing sample streams must be analyzed continuously with both speed and accuracy. This paper is concerned particularly with the application of these instruments for the continuous analysis of dynamic samples. The Instruments The On-Stream Analyzer and the Vacuum Simultaneous Spectrometer are intended to serve industry by offering two basic approaches to the problem of continuous sampling of flowing sample streams. The On-stream Analyzer (Figure 1) is designed for the completely automatic and unattended analysis of flowing sample streams in a programmed cycle of operation.

Water infiltration control techniques are designed to reduce the total volume of water entering an underground mine, and thus, reduce the volume of mine water discharge During the development of underground mines, water may be encountered in various quantities This water must be pumped from the mine during active mining, and in many situations, the weight of water removed will be more than the total weight of mineral extracted After abandonment of the mine, infiltrating water either floods the mine workings or discharges from the mine (27, 127) Infiltrating water may enter underground mines from above, below, or laterally through adjacent rock strata Earth fractures such as faults, joints, and roof fractures resulting from surface subsidence are commonly primary causes of water entrance Into abandoned underground mines Factors affecting the quantity of water entering a mine will be the depth of the mine, location of water bearing strata, and ground water flow patterns Investigations of the quantity of water entering underground coal mines have found the average rate of infiltration to range from approximately 6,262 to 10,280 liters per hectare per day (670 to 1,100 gal/acre/day) (27) Water flowing through underground mines flushes pollutants from the mine and may result in their discharge to the environment A reduction in the amount of flow usually results in a reduction in total pollution load discharging from the mine The techniques discussed in this section can be used to reduce the volume of surface and groundwater available to enter the mine system and transport pollutants The selection of a control technique will depend upon the characteristics of the mine system and the expected cost effectiveness of the technique In order for water infiltration control to be effective in controlling mine drainage pollution, the reduction in mine water flow must not be accompanied by an increase in concentration of pollutants (127) REFERENCES 2, 27, 51, 58, 127, 132

For many years Isa Mine has seen the need for a continuous mining machine which will economically cut hard rock. Tunnel borers are unsuitable due to the size and inflexibility of the machine and the shape of excavation mined. The design of roadheader type machines will not permit the use of the necessary cutting technology. in 1983 a joint project was undertaken by The Robbins Company and Mount Isa Mines Limited to develop and to trial a machine suitable for cutting hard rock in an operating mine. The project was based on the proven technology of raiseboring applied to horizontal development. The Mobile Miner was fabricated and trialled in a disused quarry in the U.S.A. during early 1984. Following these trials, the machine was transported to Mount Isa and commenced mining in September that year. The initial duty was to continue the development of a decline commenced by conventional mining for a conveyor system to serve the deeper southern areas of the 1100 copper orebody. This system will permit direct tipping of copper ore to a new crusher complex and conveying of the - crushed ore approximately 2 kilometres to the central hoisting shaft facilities. The Robbins Mobile Miner MM120-3001 uses a vertical rotating cutting wheel mounted on a horizontal swinging boom to excavate a nominally rectangular shaped heading. The cuttings are collected on an apron and conveyed back through the machine. The resulting excavation is smooth-walled with no blasting damage to the surrounding rock. This provides a safer working environment than does conventional drill and blast development mining. Ground support requirements are considerably reduced.

Nucleation theory is applied to martensite nucleation in substitutional iron alloys. Composition fluctuations are neglected, and a steady rate of nucleation is predicted for any composition and temperature. The maximum rate of nucleation (as a function of temperature) is shown to be measurable only for on extremely narrow composition range, being too great or too small outside this range. A number of experimental observations, including completely isothermal transformation in some alloys and composition-dependence of M. temperature in others, are compared with the calculated behavior. IN a previous report,¹ nucleation theory was applied to the formation of isothermal martensite in an Fe-Ni-Mn alloy. The experimental observations of Cech and Hollomon² were accounted for quantitatively. It now is of interest to examine the predictions of nucleation theory with respect to martensite transformation in substitutional iron alloys of other compositions. Since Fe-Ni alloys have received considerable attention, both as to their transformation kinetics and their free energies, they will be treated in detail, although the results apply with equal validity to other substitutional alloys. In substitutional alloys, where composition fluctuations can be neglected in volumes of critical nuclear size, the rate of nucleation of martensite in subcooled austenite is¹ n - Nv exp (—W*/kT) [I] where the free energy of formation of the critical size nucleus is W* = 8192 p (?² s³) [2] In the expressions for n and W*, the symbols have the following meanings: N is the number of atoms per unit volume; v, the atomic vibration frequency; 8, a function of the elastic constants of austenite and the shear angle of martensite; , the austenite/mar-tensite inter facial free energy; and ?fc is the free energy change per unit volume accompanying the transformation. Jones and Pumphrey² have determined the austenite to martensite free energy change as a function of nickel content and temperature for Fe-Ni alloys. Their expression is ?F = 2500 C + 1.25 (1 —C)?FFc cal per mol [3] where C is the atom fraction of nickel, and ?Ffe is the free energy change per unit volume for pure iron as tabulated by Zener4 (or, equivalently, Fisher"). From Eqs. 1 to 3, it is possible to calculate isothermal nucleation rates as a function of temperature and composition for Fe-Ni alloys. The only unknown parameter is (?² s³). The best value of this parameter for Fe-Ni alloys, determined from M. temperatures in a manner to be described shortly, is (?² s³)= 9.92 (10)21 cgs units [4] Taking this value of (?² s³), C-curves for isothermal nucleation were calculated for Fe-Ni alloys of several compositions, and are plotted in Fig. 1. It is evident from Fig. 1 that completely isothermal nucleation of martensite in Fe-Ni alloys can be observed experimentally for only a very narrow range of compositions. Cech and Hollomon find that a nucleation rate of about 10' nuclei per cc per sec is as fast as they can follow dilatometrically, and a rate of about 10-1 nucleus per cc per sec is about the slowest that can be measured conveniently. If the nucleation rate is to lie between the limits 10-1 10 the nickel content of an Fe-Ni alloy must fall in the atomic fraction range 0.299 5 C 5 0.302. Nickel contents lower than 0.299 correspond to nucleation rates too great to follow, and those higher than 0.302 to nucleation rates too slow to measure in a reasonable time.* In view of the narrow corn- position range in which successful isothermal measurements can be made, it is not surprising that only one substitutional alloy has been described' that comes close to being in the proper range.

This publication presents the results of a laboratory investigation of displacement of gas by injection or imbibition of water into sandstone models under essentially isobaric conditions. A brief discussion of scaling requirements is included. The influence on residual gas saturation of independently varying the parameters of dimensional ratios of the porous media, rates and methods of flooding, surface tension, initial water saturation, and permeability is shown. Of these variables, increased initial water saturation and decreased surface tension reduced residual gas saturation significantly, whereas variations in flooding rate and dimensional ratios had no apparent effect. No correlation was evident between absolute permeability and residual gas saturation.

"The selection of a site for plant facilities is a function of several factors and has as its objective the maximization of profits, given fixed markets and sources of raw material locations. In practice there are several sites, any one of which or a combination of two or more would be suitable to meet the basic requirements of source of supply of raw material and labour and still fulfill market demands. The model used to select the optimum profit combination utilizes both computer programs and traditional financial analysis techniques. Of the three computer programs used in the mode), one is a linear program and another is a transportation simulator. Basic cost and price data are required. In examining costs, three levels are used: (a) distribution costs of raw material to the plant and finished goods to the market; (b) direct production costs at the plant, such as labour and locally supplied material; and (c) capital and overhead costs at the plant, such as construction costs, taxes, insurance, and federal and provincial cost allowances. The direct costs generally depend on the scale of operations, so that a large plant in one location may have a lower unit cost than two smaller plants. This, of course, must be balanced against distribution costs. In examining profit, it is necessary to think in terms of the price and volume of sales at each of the market locations. Given basic data and relationships, the model can be used to optimally locate production facilities or, alter-natively, optimally structure a transportation network given existing locations of plants and markets. It is dynamic to the extent that it can react to changes in volume, price and cost to optimally locate an additional plant, the expansion of existing plants, the shutting down or cutting back of plants, or the restructuring of distribution networks."

"Complexity in soil-foundation interaction and subsoil nonlinear behavior cause difficulties and uncertainties in evaluating the actual values of foundation design factors such as settlement. The acquired continuous records of Cone Penetration Test (CPT) can be used to determine the soil profile and characteristics those are applicable in the geotechnical design. In this paper, it has been attempted to present a new non-linear stress-strain approach to estimate the foundations settlement by using CPT data in the form of soil behavior classification charts. This new approach is based on Janbu method (1960s and also 1998). Instead of using fixed and constant values for stress exponent (j) and modulus number (m), continuous coefficient variations can be used. The proposed approach also can be used as a new method to predict pile group settlement. A data bank has been compiled containing twenty-two practical case histories to investigate the accuracy of the predictions made by the proposed and available common methods. The comparisons indicate that the proposed approach is relatively able to predict the settlement close to their real values. Therefore, it can be considered as an alternative method based on valuable CPT data and nonlinear stress-strain approach for foundations and pile groups settlement estimation.INTRODUCTIONComplexity in soil behaviour for settlement analysis is the result of non-linear and time dependent stressstrain behaviour of soils, their elasto-plastic performance under loading and unloading situation and also effects of stress history (Holtz et al., 2011; Fellenius, 2015). Hence, many relations and equations have been proposed to predict foundation settlement, where most of them are based on typical different parameters such as soil stiffness (E), foundation width (B), contact pressure (q) and pressure developing in depth (Janbu, 1967 also 1998; Briaud and Gibbens, 1999; Uzielli and Mayne, 2012).The Janbu approach for settlement estimation, proposed by Janbu in the early 1960s, combines the basic principles of linear and non-linear stress-strain behaviour of material. The method is applied to all types of soils. The relation between stress and strain is a function of two non-dimensional parameters which are unique for any soil: a stress exponent, “j”, and a modulus number, “m”. The Janbu relations are derived from the definition of tangent modulus by the following expression:"

Asbestos is a natural mineral fibre which has been known and utilized commercially for about a century. From the forties, it was employed on an ever-increasing scale throughout the mechanical engineering, building, paper-making and plastics sectors, to name but a few. There are essentially five minerals which provide fibres for industrial applications, namely, the chrysotile variety of serpentine and the amphiboles such as riebeckite, anthophyllite, cummingtonite-grunerite (amosite) and tremolite. About a fifth of the world's asbestos output was once taken by Europe for the manufacture of asbestos-cement products, reinforced plastics, paper and cardboard, panels, soft insulation and spray-on powders. However, in the sixties and seventies the hypothesis regarding the pathogenic nature of asbestos fibres started to gain ground. Moreover, between the sixties and eighties the EU issued a series of regulations designed to bring about a steady decrease in asbestos consumption. This line of action has culminated in recent years in a whole set of directives banning the use of asbestos in all products. This created a major problem, namely, how to clean-up the several million tons of various types of asbestos products in various states of conservation existing in Western Europe. CORDIAM (Pat. RM95 A 000269 and Pat. RM96 A 000782 in the name of ECOTEC S.r.1.) is one of the thermal inertization techniques recently proposed for this purpose. The process provides for the low-temperature ceramization of the toxic-harmful material. Of course, with such a great variety of waste materials and the volumes to be treated, as well as the need to ensure the correct dimensional design of the thermal sections of the treatment plant, it is necessary to know as much as possible about the thermal behaviour of the wastes concerned. This paper details the steps taken firstly to ascertain the thermal behaviour of such materials as may be encountered in day-to-day practice and secondly to examine the influence of the main process parameters on the preliminary design of gas- or fuel-oil-fired rotary kilns of the kind used for waste treatment.

IN the early decades of the past century the method of starting iron blast-furnaces by "scaffolding-down" seems to have been in universal use for coke-furnaces and, at least in this country, for charcoal-furnaces also. It was likewise used at some of the early anthracite-furnaces, as is stated in the important "Reminiscences" printed by the late Samuel Thomas. I It had been generally superseded in Great Britain as early as 1850, by some variations of the plan now used, and was rarely used when Percy wrote.' On the Continent it was still followed in the 60's,3 and was elaborately described by Valerius in 1852. I have never read any statement as to when and by whom '4 scaffolding" was first dispensed with, but the following extracts from journals of my father seem to fix an authentic date for an instance in this country:
