"This paper describes the development and the implementation of process control in a variety of instruments used in metallurgical laboratories. These instruments are used for different research projects in extractive metallurgy. Hardware and software aspects for this implementation are described and analyzed. Extractive metallurgy applications where process control was .used are presented. IntroductionMicroprocessors are invading almost every area of our lives and are turning up in unexpected applications. A great deal of new equipment which is coming into the market have built- in microprocessor systems. Nevertheless, the area of upgrading existing processes has been slow to develop. There are a variety of reasons for this, and many of these are economic. One of the principal reasons, however, is the general reluctance on the part of many organizations to commit a strong effort to put this new technology into their existing processes.Microprocessor systems developed ""in lab"" are capable of not only measuring thermophysical events which are taking place in metallurgical furnaces, but simultaneously controlling these furnaces. In this paper software and hardware aspects in the implementation of microprocessor control for resistance and for induction furnaces are presented. In addition to this, metallurgical results are given from experiments where this furnace control was applied."

This study presents the economics of the hot-carbonate purification process for removing C02. It considers three variations of the process in order to meet the design specifications, which call for a feed-gas flow of 10 million standard cubic feet per hour (std.c.f.h.) with C02 inlet concentrations of 10, 20, and 30 percent and exit C02 values of 5, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.1 percent. The key to good cyclone circuit design and operation in primary grinding circuits will be discussed. Cyclone circuit design issues include individual cyclone design features such as cone angle or materials of construction, as well as orientation and manifold configuration. Cyclone performance issues as well as maintenance considerations will be detailed in an effort to achieve consistent cyclone operation with minimal coarse solids in the overflow. The new gMAXTM. cyclones will be introduced and evaluated using operating circuit data in closed circuit grinding applications

"The index A*b, determined from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) drop weight tester (DWT) results, has become well-known in the mining industry as a reliable measure of ore hardness in impact or crushing, having the inferred units of t/kWh. This index evolved from a long history of comminution studies at the JKMRC, including the development of the now superseded JKTech twin-pendulum, the industry standard JK Drop Weight Tester (JKDWT) and the faster alterative JKMRC rotary breakage tester (JKRBT). A reduced version of the DWT, the semi-autogenous grinding mill comminution test (SMC test®), also provides estimates of the A*b though the testing of only one particle size at five specific energies. Experimental determination of A*b using the above devices/tests requires samples, with sufficient mass, to be sent to designated laboratories, registered to conduct such tests. This protocol is fine for bankable and commercial testing, where material characterisation data is used in conjunction with machine specific data in modelling and simulation, and power based calculations. However, for comparative testing, where results are required at the time of sampling (eg for plant troubleshooting or spot-surveys), or for rapid ranking of geometallurgical samples, these existing tests simply do not provide a timely, viable and cost-effective solution. In order to address this critical void in the realm of comparative testing, a new device has been developed, exploiting a central feature of single particle impact testing – that the A*b can be reliably estimated using one precise low energy test. This device, for which a patent is currently pending, called the HIT (Hardness Index Tester), has been precision engineered to allow users to break narrowly sized fragments at a set specific energy, in a safe and easy manner. The manufacturing materials have been chosen carefully to ensure compatibility with the intended use and portability to any site, whilst minimising cost. The device is supplied with a novel quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) feature, to ensure that the targeted potential energy is consistently delivered. The product from the HIT breakage test can be quickly sized using a single screen to determine the mass per cent undersize, from which the A*b index is calculated directly at site – eliminating the need to send the raw data off-site for analysis. On presized fragments, a single test using 20 fragments takes less than five minutes to complete, and the results are immediately available. The HIT is currently being tested at a major mining laboratory in the US and the results to date have proved it can deliver on all fronts. This paper describes the new prototype device, which offers users a low cost in-house mechanism for estimating the A*b at any mine site, with potential applications on fragments up to 25 mm from drill core, blast chip rejects or the grinding circuit feed. It also outlines the results of field tests carried out by an objective third party mining group and compares the results with those from current industry standard tests conducted on the same material.Citation:Kojovic, T, 2016. "Introduction.The Bureau of Mines has taken up the problem of determining a method or methods whereby underground compensation insurance rates for metal-mining companies can be equalized in proportion to the underground hazards involved. This study has been started by the writer with the assistance of Mr. I. M. Wolfin* as consultant.The present paper briefly reviews the origin of accident compensation, gives a digest of State compensation laws, and describes types of insurance carriers. This will be followed by study of the basis of premium rate, risk differentials, and cost of compensation insurance to mine operators. These data will be supplemented by an analysis of the accident hazards in different mining methods and practices, and the severity and frequency of accidents classified by time lost and period of exposure to hazard, for different States, mining methods, occupations and nationalities. Attention will be given to standardized preventives for underground accidents in metal mines, and, finally, the classification of underground metal-mining hazard for workmen's compensation insurance premium rating."

The recovery of heavy minerals by gravity concentration during grinding is practised widely in the minerals industry. Studies have shown that the grade and recovery of the concentrate depends not only on the performance of the concentrator but also on the degree of liberation achieved in the mills and the scavenging action of the hydrocyclones closing the grinding circuit. In the current study, consideration is given to the development of mathematical models to quantify and unify the operations of comminution, liberation, classification and concentration. The models are based on test work done at production scale with gold ore.

This Bureau of Mines report presents several factors that currently enter into the design, manufacture, and testing of windows and lenses used in explosion-proof enclosures. Emphasis is also given to the sealing concepts for lenses. Criteria for adhesives and sealants are suggested based on the survivability of an explosion-proof enclosure as a structure, rather than upon the minimum material properties of its constituents. Procedures for surface preparation of adherends are also discussed.

An improved methodology is presented for assessing the economic feasibility and effectiveness of recycling industrial waste. The methodology is based on the break-even control mechanism, but at the same time provides for the introduction of new evaluation criteria such as the threshold of conditionality and the degree of ore substitution. Based on an improved analysis, it becomes possible to more precisely predict recycling efficiency. A more refined determination of the lower limit of concentration of recoverable metals, at which technogenic waste can be assigned the status of secondary raw materials and processed profitably, leads to a significant expansion of the secondary raw material base suitable for recycling. The potential for recycling manganese-containing dust from the production of ferrosilicomanganese, dehydrated sludge from the hydro separation of slags, and cake from the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide at the Chiatura mining enterprise is used as an example. It is shown that with a threshold of –24% Mn content, the highest recycling efficiency can be achieved by the production of low-phosphorus manganese slag and conversion to ferrosilicomanganese using the above waste to replace 40-60% grade III and IV manganese concentrates in the feed.

SMALL buttons of fused tantalum have been produced by are fusion in a vacuum, by drawing an arc between sticks of pressed tantalum and a tantalum-faced water-cooled copper block. However, ingots of appreci-able size can be produced only by the heat-treatment of bars pressed from powder. The following outline covering the production of finished bars of tantalum by the methods of powder metallurgy is also used for the production of columbium, taking into account the difference in the melting points of these two metals. PRESSING THE POWDER With possibly a few exceptions, a pressing operation is one of the essential steps in the practice of powder metallurgy. In fact, the author's experience with a number of high-melting-point metals and with numer-ous types of hard carbide compositions has led him to believe that this operation is often one of the most important in the- entire process, and frequently one of the most difficult to carry out in a satisfactory manner. Defects clue to improper pressing can readily lead to a defective finished product. It is the author's opinion that rarely is a bar or other article pressed from metal powder in such a way that all parts of the piece are uniformly pressed. The nearest approach to uniformity of pressing is possibly attained when the powder is contained in a flexible receptacle, such as rubber, and is pressed under a liquid by hydrostatic pressure. However, this method is not generally applicable. Hydraulic pressing in steel dies where one or two punches are forced into the die must usually be resorted to. As the pressure in such a die is built up, the powder begins to cling to the walls of the die with a tenacity dependent upon the nature of the powder, and this results in a bridging action, so that the layers of powder adjacent to the moving punch are pressed more heavily than those further removed in the mass. Frequently, as the pressure is carried higher, there may be a mass slippage of the powder upon itself, with the result that slip cracks are formed within the pressed

A TREMENDOUS volume of the metal rolled annually into sheets, strips and coil stock finds its way to a host of stamping and manufacturing plants which are the quantity production units of the country. Considerable in volume, too, are the rolled and extruded rods which go into forging and manufacturing plants for conversion into the same general line: those widely sold metallic necessities and luxuries of the household, the office, transportation, farming and building construction. Yet, in spite of its age and its importance, the stamping trade has been doing its "engineering" largely by trial and error. Its distinctive method is shearing out and plastically working metal to finished shape in a few quick strokes with high loads and expensive tools which are warranted only by large quantities to be produced. The principal operations have many features in common with rolling and wire-drawing methods. Combinations of stresses are different, however, and details of operations are infinite in variety. An engineering study of the subject begins with stress analysis, but must go back to metallurgy for its foundation. A grouping of pressed-metal working operations according to whether the metal is (1) sheared, (2) bent, (3) drawn or (4) squeezed has proved useful. All of these groups include instances of both hot and cold operations. For discussions of metal working properties, the division between hot and cold working is taken as the recrystallization range of temperature. This, of course, brings tin, lead and often zinc into the hot-work range at or near room temperature. The outstanding hot-working press field is in forging: particularly of brass; all of which is included in the squeezing group.

"The Teck Highland Valley copper (THVC) mine is located approximately 55 km (34 miles) southwest of Kamloops and approximately 20 km (12 miles) west of Logan Lake, BC, Canada (Fig. 1). Mining at THVC is conducted at three openpit operations comprised of Valley, Lornex and Highmont with a total annual output on the order of 300 kt (330,000 st) copper concentrate and 5 kt (5,500 st) of molybdenum concentrate. The Phase 8 pushback in the Valley Pit (Fig. 2) was mined from 2011 to 2016. Successful slope steepening occurred in the later stage of the pushback with the implementation of presplit blasting in 2015 and 2016.This article summarizes the investigation and design approach including: structural analysis, kinematic assessments of bench breakback potential, development of discrete fracture networks (DFNs) to characterize discontinuity fabric, rockfall modelling, 2D anisotropic limit equilibrium and 2D distinct element modelling, assessment of potential kinematic failure modes affecting double benches with 3D distinct element modelling and improved blasting techniques using e-dets. THVC is currently undertaking a mine life expansion involving the pushback of the west wall of the Valley Pit above Phase 8 to extend the mine life to 2029. Engineering geologyThe east wall slope in the Valley Pit is comprised of a 350-m (1,148-ft) thick sequence of glacial valley sediments that occur along the Highland Valley (Fig. 2), exposing an overburden slope up to about 225-m (740-ft) high below the crest of the ultimate east wall. The glacial overburden units consist of pro-glacial outwash and glaciofluvial deposits, glacial outwash sands and gravels interbedded with till and alluvial fans consisting of cross-bedded sands and sandy-gravels. Lacustrine sediments occur within the mid to lower portion of the glacial sequence and contain intervals of low-shear-strength clays and silts. Two large (1.3 and 7 Mt or 1.4 and 7.7 million st) waste rock buttresses were required to maintain slope stability using slot-cut and fill mining methods, as described in Fortin et al. (2011).The Valley porphyry deposit occurs in the central portion of the late Upper Triassic Guichon Creek Batholith, which intrudes assemblages of the Permian Cache Creek and Upper Triassic Nicola groups. The Valley deposit occurs in an area of intense fracturing near the intersection of the northerly trending Lornex Fault and the northwest to westerly trending Highland Valley Fault."

This paper will address the feasibility of using low-density cellular concrete (LDCC) for an annular fill application where project conditions required pumping the LDCC material for distances of up to 16,000 feet. These conditions occurred during construction of the Kaneohe-Kailua Sewer Tunnel in Oahu, Hawaii, between 2014 and 2018. Located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, this 13-foot-diameter rock tunnel extends for approximately three miles from the Kaneohe Pre-Treatment Facility to the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. The tunnel was built to convey wastewater and provide temporary storage for peak wet weather flows entering the collection system, thereby reducing the potential for uncontrolled discharges. LDCC was chosen for this project partly due to its environmental benefits, which were essential for an application contiguous to the inland marine and coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean. In order to ensure optimal performance characteristics—compressive strength (with a requirement of 300 psi at 56 days), flowability, and light weight—were achieved, extensive testing of various LDCC products and mix designs was completed. The testing measured the initial set time of the LDCC as well as the compressive strength needed to reduce the quantity of grout lifts required for the project.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to produce metallized pellets from domestic iron ore superconcentrates using lignite and subbituminous coal as reductants. Feed materials for the metallizing process consisted of commercially indurated iron oxide pellets and green pellets prepared from upgraded domestic concentrates with graphite or limestone as internal additives. Durability of the green pellets during metallization was investigated in tests conducted in a 7-inch-ID rotating drum furnace. Test results indicated that the major cause of pellet disintegration with the concentrates used was the tumbling action during reduction rather than forces generated within the pellets. In larger scale tests made in a 34-inch-ID by 35-foot-long kiln, the previously indurated pellets were metallized with lignite at 1,030° C with little disintegration. A 96-percent level of metallization was obtained in pellets having an average compressive strength of 420 lb. In subsequent, similar tests using green pellets containing graphite or limestone, pellet disintegration was more severe, with 10 to 40 percent of the feed being lost as dust. The surviving pellets had metallizations ranging from 88.3 to 94.4 percent and compressive strengths ranging from 60 to 68 lb.

Spontaneous nodulation leading to growth of well developed glossy spheroids (generally hemispheres) of up to 0.06 cm width in 120 min has been observed during copper electrodeposition with certain levels of glue, thiourea and C1-. Thiourea alone can produce spontaneous nodulation but addition of glue and/or Cl- is required for rapid and sustained growth. In most cases once the glossy nodules develop they consume the majority of the copper deposited; thus, the specific current densities (and hence copper electrodeposition rates) on the glossy nodules are about an order of magnitude or, more greater than on the adjacent planar surfaces. The texture of the adjaoent planar surfaces is not glossy in appearance but is well faceted showing the usual deposition grain structure for such additives. Cathode potentials when spontaneous nodulation occurs are about TOO my more negative than with usual copper electroplating. This fact associated with evidence of extremely high levels of cathode surface passivation based on cyclic voltammograms indicates that the conditions which lead to spontaneous nodulation result from a very tightly adsorbed additive surface film. This film breaks down in specific points initiating the glossy nodules which then grow at extremely rapid rates. Current density is also important in spontaneous nodulation. At equal deposition times a current density of 21.5 mA/cm produced much larger glossy nodules than at 48 mA/cm2. The surface concentration of the glossy nodules was much greater in the latter case, however. The role of current density is still not well understood. The role of it as well as the relative roles of the three additives, thiourea, glue and Cl- in spontaneous nodulation is presented. Preliminary results and some possible correlations of these to help explain spontaneous nodulation are presented. It is believed that tankhouse upsets where cathode nodulation occurs may be related to this phenomenon.

"Zinc is the fourth most widely used metal in the world after iron, aluminum and copper. The primary zinc production is through flotation of zinc concentrate, roasting, leaching and electrowinning. Close to 60% of the metal produced is consumed in galvanizing the steel by making a thin layer of zinc coating on the steel surface by hot dip galvanizing. Process Research ORTECH Inc. has developed an efficient energy-saving sustainable technology for the recovery of zinc from secondary sources such as galvanized steel scrap, dross, dusts etc. The process consists of treating the zinc containing scrap in an alkaline solution to remove the zinc and thereby producing a zinc free steel scrap for recycle. The zinc containing leach liquor is subjected to a solvent extraction process to recover value added zinc oxide as the final product. In this paper, important industrial processes for the recycling of zinc including the PRO process will be discussed. BACKGROUNDZinc is the fourth most widely used metal in the world after iron, aluminum and copper. Global refined zinc output increased by 2.7 per cent to 13.16 million tonnes in 2011 and is expected to increase by an additional 2.4 per cent to 13.48 million tonnes in 2012 [1]. The primary zinc production is through flotation of zinc concentrate, roasting, leaching and electrowinning. Close to 60% of the metal produced is consumed in galvanizing steel by making a thin layer of zinc coating on the steel surface by hot dip galvanizing. Other major usages of zinc are in the production of brass and bronze, die casting and zinc-air batteries. The additional demand for zinc could come from its addition to fertilizers to increase crop yield.While the demand for zinc is increasing, many mines are scheduled to close in near future after being depleted of ore. The mines set to close between now and 2015 are Teck Resources’ Red Dog Mine in Alaska, Minmetals’ Century Mine in Australia and Vedanta Resource’s Skorpion Mine in Namibia [1]. The depletion of resources due to continued use and exploitation is becoming a great concern for the zinc industry. As a result, the sustainability of natural resources for continued societal care has become extremely important. Resource conservation and recovery by recycling with minimal environmental impact is a key element for sustainable development. In this paper, important industrial processes for the recycling of zinc including the PRO process are presented."

Much concern has been expressed recently as to whether water supplies will be sufficient to support accelerated energy development foreseen in operation Independence. Taking the Nation as a whole, sufficient water is available for energy growth, but locally, as in arid parts of the Colorado Basin, limited water supplies will dictate economies in water use and affect plant siting. As Young and Thompson1 point out with respect to electric power generation, the term "water requirements" is misleading, as demand for water for cooling is sensitive to price of water and thus is quite flexible rather than the inflexible or fixed level implied by the word "requirement." Much the same is true of other energy conversion systems. Water is used in many aspects of energy production including mining and reclamation of mined lands, on-site processing, transportation, refining, and conversion to other forms of energy. In the East, South, Midwest, and along the seacoasts, water supplies are generally adequate for energy industries; most water problems in those regions relate to pollution rather than supply. West of about the 100th meridian, however, runoff is generally less than potential diversions and energy industries must compete with alternative uses for the limited available water supplies. Water is especially short in areas of less than 10 inches mean annual rainfall where natural precipitation generally is insufficient for establishing vegetation without irrigation. Extraction. The principal categories of extraction comprise coal mining, oil and gas production, uranium mining, and oil shale mining.
