"This paper charts, briefly, the :salient facts of international trade in minerals and their products and Canada's place in it. It also reviews inter-national agreements, economic groupings and national measures to channel and regulate production and trade in minerals. Canada's mineral industry now produces raw materials worth $3.7 billion per year, making this country a giant among mineral producers. Two-thirds of this production is exported, chiefly to the United States, accounting for about 30 per cent of Canada's merchandise exports and topping all other classes.However, several other nations are also pressing the development of their mineral resources and markets. The Soviet Bloc, China and principally Australia and Africa are becoming important suppliers of basic raw materials to some traditional markets of Canada in Europe and Japan.The outlook for Canadian mineral exports to the countries of the Common Market, Great Britain and Japan is good, although some tariff barriers remain troublesome.Concerning the United States, our most important market, Canada is seeking to have that country lift import quotas on lead and zinc, and re-cent statements by U.S. authorities give hope that this may be achieved soon. Moreover, Canada wishes to obtain easier access to the American market for several of its metals and minerals.Canada is now participating in the Kennedy Round of tariff talks under the auspices of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and is seeking to open wider doors for its exports of products.In summary, Canada has done reasonably well in some mineral commodities on world markets, but has lost ground in others. Any slackening of Canada's efforts in the development and marketing of mineral resources would soon lead to the decline of its role in the world miueral economy."

Portals to access underground mines are important infrastructure and their design requires careful consideration. Portals are generally expected to last for the life of the mine. Typically, the exposure of personnel and equipment is high, with many hundreds of movements through the portal per day. Consequently, the risk associated with geotechnical instability must be extremely low. Portals are often established from a boxcut. In areas where the weathering profile is well developed, the design and execution of the boxcut can involve significant effort, with the objective of minimizing the volume of the boxcut, whilst ensuring that conditions at the design depth are suitable for establishing a stable portal. Properly designed site investigations are a critical part of this process. Currently available portal design guidelines have not been updated for decades, however the equipment and ground support systems have changed significantly in recent years. Many mine portals have since been constructed in a relatively short time frame with success, often in challenging ground conditions using some of the more modern approaches to ground support. This is beneficial because delays in establishing a portal will generally delay other critical path activities, and lead to cost overruns.

"Traditional geostatistical modelling methods are difficult to apply to heavy-tailed deposits because the extreme positive skew of the grade distribution leads to bias. The focus here is on an innovative method of modelling the high-grade population by conditionally simulating discrete volumes (nuggets) of gold with marked Poisson and Cox processes. Capping and other ad-hoc manipulation of the assay data is not required; however, an intensity map for the point processes is required. The method is demonstrated on a dataset from an epithermal deposit and demonstrates an improvement in reducing smearing and controlling the skew of the grade distribution.RÉSUMÉ Les méthodes traditionnelles de modélisation géostatistique sont difficiles à appliquer dans des gisements dont la distribution de la teneur est à queue lourde car l’extrême asymétrie positive de la distribution de la teneur génère des biais. Dans le présent article, l’accent est mis sur une méthode novatrice de modélisation de la population à haute teneur par la simulation conditionnelle des volumes discrets d’or (pépites) au moyen de procédés marqués de Poisson et de Cox. The Bureau of Hines and industry (mining and private) have studied the placement of hydraulic sandfill in deep-vein mines to identify existing problems and to develop techniques to strengthen the support characteristics of the sandfill. The hydraulic sandfill system, physical properties of typical classified mill tailings, and properties of sandfill modified by various techniques are discussed. Computer analysis has defined the support capability of various sandfills using actual mine field data as a reference base. High-modulus sandfill can provide adequate support in deep-vein mines to alleviate rock and pillar stresses and to reduce rock-burst incidence.

Sixteen elements were determined spectrochemically in the general range of 3 to 1,000 ppm in high - purity columbium . Samples were converted thermally to Cb2 O , mixed with graphite and Ge02 , and excited for 15 seconds using a 15 - ampere dc arc . For the molybdenum determination , the oxidized samples were mixed with NaCl and Geo₂ and excited for 30 seconds . Spectra were recorded on photographic plates , and spectral line transmittance values were measured photometrically . Relative - intensity ratios of selected analytical and internal standard spectral lines were plotted against concentrations of standards to form curves from which concentrations of impurities were read . Average precision of the method was 11.2 percent relative standard deviation .

Shaft construction is assuming ever increasing importance when new mining enterprises are considered. The reasons for this increased emphasis is the much greater depths at which many new ore-bodies are being developed and the rapid depletion of near surface reserves requiring mines to go to greater depths on existing deposits. These greater depths increase the probability of exposure to unfavorable geologic conditions and it is more likely that high ground and/or water pressures will be experienced at these depths. The large capital costs involved and the critical position of a shaft in the overall mining program necessitate that this element of project development be given careful and critical consideration. The Henderson No. 2 Shaft is located in the Rocky Mountains of north central Colorado (See Figure I), about 55 miles west of Denver, near the community of Empire in Clear Creek County. At the 10, 442 foot collar elevation, winter arrives in late September and brings snow to contend with until May. The labor force for Shaft No. 2 is approximately 90 men. They are provided access to the project via all-weather U. S. Highway 40. SHAFT DESIGN The Henderson No. 2 Shaft is a 28-foot I. D. circular, concrete lined (1 foot thick) vertical shaft. The final depth will be approximately 3100 feet

"When performing a valuation of a mineral property, a developing mine or perhaps an ongoing operation, the appraiser is typically provided with a range of information prepared by the property owner. This information can include ownership records, geological interpretation, assay data, an estimate of the reserves or resources believed to be on site (tons and grade), mine plans, production forecasts, capital and operating cost projections, and so forth.The appraiser familiarizes himself with the data, analyzes the various reports and then prepares the appraisal. There is usually a site visit, and there may be some effort at comparison of the particular mineral deposit with others in the region or with those of similar depositional characteristics, but for the most part, the appraiser is relying on the corporate documents, tempered by his/her experience in the field. Time is usually of the essence, the cost for the assignment has been trimmed, and therefore independent verification of the various components comprising the underlying data base (legal review, redrilling portions of the deposit, collection of new samples, re-assaying, etc.) is unlikely in most situations.In the case of high-value commodities — gold, silver, diamonds, perhaps the platinum-group elements — there have been numerous examples of the property owners attempting to increase the value of their holdings by nefarious methods. Most of these involve salting the deposit in some fashion; i.e., introducing small amounts of the commodity into samples being sent to a laboratory for analysis so that the resultant assay shows a higher grade (Donaldson, 2002; Greeley, 2001; Lechler et al., 2008 and Meech, 2001). Other schemes to enhance the apparent worth of a property include the use of nonstandard assay procedures, incorrect handling or withholding of the underlying information, and false reporting."

"The mining industry faces increasing economic, environmental and social challenges, as easier deposits deplete and ores become more difficult to mine and process; head grades decline; projects migrate to increasingly remote and difficult geographies; and the industry faces more stringent environmental and social standards. While these factors increase costs and risks, they also present opportunities for a more integrated approach to mining, processing, materials handling and waste management. Two key areas of risk are in tailings and water management. As mining and processing tonnage rates continue to increase, the disturbance footprints, water and energy consumption and scale of tailings storage facilities also rise. These factors can be mitigated by more selective mining, ore sorting and pre-concentration, and more intensive tailings dewatering. Such alternatives must be considered in conjunction with the selection of mining method, metallurgical flowsheets, major equipment selection, and key process design criteria. For example, increasing the grind size of a concentrator reduces energy consumption and eases tailings dewatering, but may cause challenges with metal recovery. Emerging technologies will be reviewed, and economic and environmental trade-offs for eco-efficient alternatives will be presented for metal sulfide mines.INTRODUCTION The metals mining industry faces significant challenges that can affect its financial viability and social license to operate. There has been a consistent decline in ore grades and a relentless push towards larger operations to capture perceived economies of scale. With these larger operations, the environmental footprint of mines has increased. Water and energy consumption, and resulting GHG emissions have also risen. In recent years, two issues have raised special concerns for stakeholders and companies: • Water scarcity, particularly in drier regions of the world such as Northern Chile, SW USA, Southern Africa and Australia • Tailings risks, following the high-profile failures of the Fundao tailings dam in Minas Gerais, Brazil in 2015 and the Mount Polley tailings dam in BC, Canada in 2014"

This paper describes how specific technical and regulatory issues related to water management have been dealt with at Anglo AmericanÆs Moranbah North mine. It compiles the collection of practices that have been implemented since 2010 in response to climatic and regulatory drivers. Operations must continually evolve as they face emerging challenges. For Moranbah North mine, one key challenge is the integration of its mine water system to that of its new neighbouring mine Grosvenor. The commitment to ongoing improvement has placed the mine in a good position to face this particular challenge.Water-related risks were identified then mitigated by technical practices, which have focused on improving underground water management, increasing storage capacity and installing a state-of-the-art control system for the management of water on-site and for releases of mine-affected water to the environment. These practices are supported by an extensive monitoring and audit system that provides confidence in the reporting of activities and outcomes. Respirable crystalline silica poses a significant health risk, with the American Lung Association estimating that 2.3 million workers are exposed to silica in the workplace. This includes mine workers as well as those in many other industries. Reducing dust formation is sometimes not possible so other methods to reduce exposure are critical. These methods include the use of surfactants to reduce airborne dust particles. However, it is the proper selection and application of surfactants that leads to reduced dust exposure. A discussion of how surfactants work, especially for silica dust, leads to guidance for surfactant selection followed by a review of technologies for their application.

Azbe System of Controlled Calcination To obtain good and cheap lime there are certain fundamental requirements that need to be satisfied. These are : (1) Proper combustion of fuel and steady supply of heat to the kiln. (2) Proper heat distribution in the kiln. (3) Uniform drawing of lime through the several shaft sections. (4) Complete cooling of the lime and recovery of the heat. (5) Temperature control of the hot zone by economical means. (6) Ample draft to obtain high capacity. (7) Arrangements to facilitate operation. Figure 17 shows diagrammatically one of the smaller kilns, intended for large stone. Such a kiln can be supplied with gas from a centrally located automatic gas producer, or, as shown, from an integral producer located snugly against the kiln. These producers make very good gas and have a gasification capacity of either 10 or 15 tons of coal a day. The producers have water-sealed ash pits, a rather thick fuel bed that is conducive to the making of high-CO gas, and are under forced draft. No steam is used. Clinkering is prevented by admixing some spent gas from the kiln with the air. Coal feeding is from a coal bunker through spouts into the hoppers over the producer. This is done, at proper intervals, by manual operation of slides, but it is planned to install mechanical feeders. Central mechanical gas producers have the advantage of requiring little labour, but the blowing of soot is a problem, as also is the proper distribution of the gas among several kilns. In the case of integral gas producers, soot from the centre burner is blown back into the producer to be burned, and the supply of gas to the kiln is controlled by regulation of air to the producer. In large plants, the mechanical producer may be preferable, but in small ones, the integral producer is cheaper, better, and more reliable. The kiln shown in Figure 17 is suitable for both systems of gas supply. It will be noticed that there are no side gas burners. All gas enters the kiln through the centre burner in a manner that permits any desired amount of gas to be directed to any of the kiln sections by the aid of regulating slides.

This paper discusses design of sprays systems for dust control around a continuous miner (CM) in about 4.2 m (14 ft.) high mining areas with about 1.0 m to 2.0 m (3-6 ft.) of out-of-seam dilution mining. The challenges included low air volumes and velocity at the end of the line curtain, dust produced from out-of-seam dilution rock being very fine with 50% of the particles less than 10 micron, poor capture of aerosol through scrubber suction inlets, dust escaping through the sides of the loading pan in mining high areas, overloading of dust-laden air in the wet-scrubber, and dust rollback toward workers. The challenges were resolved through CFD modeling of airflows; improved line curtain installation, redesign and varying the spatial locations of spray systems as compared to low mining height areas. Water sprays on CM is the primary engineering control for dust control in coal mining. In 2010, the authors developed several spray system concepts for dust control (Chugh, Patwardhan, Gurley, & Hirschi (2009), Chugh & Gurley (2009), Chugh 2012). These included increased contact time between dust particles and water droplets, improved potential for the dust aerosol to be sucked in through suction inlets, and reduced dust-roll back to the operators and workers. CFD modeling was used to understand airflow patterns around mining areas and to identify spatial locations for sprays to minimize dust exposure of CM operator (CMO), haulage unit operator (HUO), and workers downwind of the operating CM in the last open crosscut (LOXC). Face area ventilation plays a key role in dilution and removal of dust generated by mining operations. High mining heights and large pillar sizes associated with longwall mining reduce the air volume reaching the face area to achieve good dust dilution.

Bauxite resources were primarily in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and South America. Only five countries combined, Australia, Brazil, Guinea, India, and Jamaica, contained most of the total world reserves available for extraction under current economic conditions and accounted for nearly 80 % of world production of bauxite. World bauxite and alumina production declined and prices for smelter-grade alumina remained below the $200/mt level during 1993 because of growing aluminum inventories on international markets and declining worldwide demand. The United States imported bauxite primarily from Australia, Brazil, Guinea, and Jamaica. U.S. alumina plant capacity remained essentially unchanged throughout 1993, but apparent capacity utilization decreased by the close of 1993. Chromium Most of the world's known resources and reserves of chromite are located in India, Kazakhstan, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. India, Kazakhstan, and South Africa accounted for 73 % of world production of chromite. The two largest producers of chromite, Kazakhstan and South Africa, were in the process of major economic and political change during 1993. South Africa's production and exports of chromite continued to fall during 1993, because of weak international demand and a flood of cheap metal from the former U.S.S.R. and China into world markets. Despite a significant increase in production, South Africa's ferrochrome producers continued to operate below capacity in 1993. Prior o the dissolution of the U.S.S.R., Kazakhstan was a major internal supplier of chromite ore to the U.S.S.R. consumer, but subsequent decline in demand led to a downward trend of chromite production in Kazakhstan and increasing exports to Europe during 1992 and 1993. The United States consumed, about 10% of world chromite ore production in various forms of imported materials. The United States imported nearly one-half of its required chromium contained in chromite ore and chromium ferroalloys and metal from South Africa; the remainder was from the minor producers Turkey, Yugoslavia, Zimbabwe, and others.

THE war, like all destructive agencies, has focused attention on salvage and conservation, and to such an extent that a decade of normal progress has been crowded into a few months. This is particularly true as regards the repair of cutting tools. As a consequence, there has arisen a wide demand for comparable data by those engaged in such work, and for basic information by others who wish to repair tools. These repairs may be grouped in three classes: (1) The repair of broken tools of relatively slender cross-section, such as broaches, reamers, drills, etc., of a type that could be returned to service if a means to join the broken surfaces were available, as fortunately it is in the low-temperature silver solder process; (2) the repair of tools that possess shanks, tangs, and other non-cutting portions that may be broken or damaged to the extent that only the addition of metal will permit their return to service; and (3) the repair of special rotating tools, such as end-mills and milling cutters, that may have portions broken from the cutting edges or have their edges so worn in service as to require building up.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant that produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment the ore.The occurrence of air blasts is one of the principal mining hazards in block caving operations between the time of first undercutting and breakthrough of the cave to surface. As such, it needs to be managed continuously, and risk assessments need to be reviewed on a regular basis for applicability to changing conditions. Unfortunately, there is little literature on how to practically approach air blast risk assessments in a way that can be incorporated in the day-to-day operation of a mine. Previous methods of assessing air blast risk were tedious and results were often unrepeatable.With the extension of the E48 Lift 1 extraction level, it was necessary to assess the air blast risk for the extension drives and develop operational guidelines for production from the extension. A review of the methodology for assessing air blast risks revealed substantial improvement opportunities.This paper outlines the principles used for air blast risk assessments at Northparkes Mines and the methodology employed to achieve efficient, repeatable and auditable results.CITATION:Vejrazka, C, 2016. [Sales of explosives - permissible explosives5/ other high explosives, and black blasting powder - in the United States during the calendar year 1937 reached a combined total that slightly exceeded the quantity sold in 1936. A larger output was reported for permissible and other high explosives but a smaller for black powder. Production of the three classes of explosives totaled 404,744,294 pounds, more than 3 percent over 1336. The total quantity produced included 49,579,441 pounds of permissible, 288,924,253 pounds of other high ex- plosives, 36,403,950 pounds of black powder in pellet form, and 23,836,550 pounds of black powder in granular form. Sales of granular black powder declined 26 percent compared with 1936 and of pellet black powder 12 percent; gales of permissible explosives increased nearly 4 percent and of other high explosives 10 percent]

"The triboelectric charge attributes of feldspar, quartz and wollastonite minerals, after contacting different triboecharging medium made of different materials, were considered. Their charge acquisitions by different size fractions of minerals were monitored and accordingly their energetic work function values were estimated. Moreover the separation behaviours of these minerals through the electric field of a laboratory free falling separator were determined and the effects of some chemical reagents on separation their separation characteristics were studied.Finally an attempt was made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a complex silicate ore, containing quartz, feldspars, wollastonite and some other silicates. The results show favourable prospect to apply the triboelectric separation technique for beneficiation such a complex raw material."

Low-grade ore bodies, increase in rock competency, finely disseminated valuable minerals in the ore bodies, ore variability and water scarcity are among the technical challenges faced by the mining industry. These challenges have increased the business risk, capital investment and operating cost of the mining projects. Since the last 20 years, many large-scale concentrators have been built to cope with the above-mentioned challenges. Comminution, especially the fine grinding is an energy-intensive process. For example, the ball mill has a limitation in the fine grinding regime where the energy consumption increases exponentially when the product size is below 45 µm. The industry has been seeking for solutions that have a minimum risk and total cost of ownership. The stirred milling technology such as the TowerMill is well accepted by the industry as it has demonstrated the attributes required for fine grinding. TowerMill is a matured technology that has been adopted since the 80s for regrinding duty. Recently, this technology was installed in secondary and tertiary grinding duty to prepare a finer feed to rougher flotation. Four units of TowerMills were installed in a magnetite concentrator in Western Australia in tertiary grinding duty. Recently, Nippon Eirich has conducted process performance evaluation on the TowerMill circuit. The outcome of the exercise had indicated that the circuit is consuming 3.4 kWh/t to reduce from 55 µm to 35 µm with a narrow product size distribution. The effect of operating variables such as the specific energy, grinding media size, mill content % solids and mill feed configuration on the grinding efficiency were evaluated at the plant scale. Furthermore, the scale-up methodology was validated. The scope of this paper includes the performances of TowerMill and the validation of scale-up methodology.
