SOME months ago a Committee on Deep-level Mining was appointed [by the Government of the Union of South Africa] to consider the possibility of gold mining being carried on at a depth below 8,500 feet. The Committee consisted of Sir Robert Kotze (Chairman) , Mr. H. S. H. Donald (Government Mining Engineer), and Mr. H. R. Hill. The Committee has now made a report which was tabled in the House of Assembly on March 1st. The Committee reported that the tonnage of ore locked up in the deep level areas of the Central Witwatersrand is enormous, and in the 30 miles between Roodepoort and the East Rand Proprietory Mines has a value of about £200,000,000. The Committee says that, with good ventilation, the present system of wet mining, possibly with some modification and with the aid of refrigeration, may be carried to 10,000 feet, but that greater depths will require the adoption of dry mining. "A vigorous campaign of practical experiment into the possibility of dry mining should be initiated, and the Committee recommends to the Government the appointment of a committee of experts, consisting of representatives of the mining industry, the Mines Department, and the medical profession, with the Government Mining Engineer as chairman. The Committee suggests the provision of £30,000 for the first year for the investigations and experiments contemplated, which could best be carried out by an organization which might be styled 'The Rand Mining Research Institute' and constituted somewhat on the Jines of the South African Institute for Medical Research" . The Committee suggests that this committee of experts should arrange for experiments to be made with dry mining in one of the deepest mines, and investigate ventilation, refrigeration, support of workings, and the physiological problems connected with mining. "We emphasize the necessity of treating this whole question as one of importance and urgency. The investigations should be prosecuted with the utmost vigour and should not be delayed at any time for want of funds or for any other reason. If they are not done thoroughly and quickly, the whole scheme might just as well be left severely alone.

In the constant search for ways and means of improving the quality of coke and thus making its use at the blast-fornace more satisfactory and economical, it has become increasingly evident that the present laboratory tests do not show the full picture of a coke's value as a blast-furnace fuel. This fact was recognized by Dr. A. C. Pieldner thirty-five years ago: (Ref. 1) here is perhaps no phase of fuel technicology which has aroused more discussion or regarding which there is more difference of opinion than the properties of coke which make it most suitable for blast-furnaces and other uses." Dr. Fieldner followed this assertion with a statement to the effect that men who write on this subject today (1923) have, because of conflicting experimental evidence brought forth in recent years, far less positive opinions on the matter than did writers of some years past. One is led to wonder if these statements are not just as true now as they were when first made.

A list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved previous to January 1, 1942, was published In Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7207.3/ The present list covers additional equipment approved during the calendar year 1942. The items have been numbered to indicate the order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7207 gives four air compressors on the Bureau's active list, and the present circular gives the fifth to be approved. Items 90 and 94 under Loading; Machines land Conveyors also appear in Information Circular 7207. These numbers are repeated hero to show that approval was granted during 1942 for additional voltages on machines previously listed one voltage only. Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those which may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines, devices, and lamps that arc available for reducing explosion and other hazards incidental to coal mining. The present paper and Information Circular 7207 together give the complete list of all available permissible .Mine equipment.

Mining and metallurgy have had a long history in China, and resources there have always been considered promising. Under the People's Republic of China (PRC), a remarkable industrial renaissance is underway that should further gain momentum in the years ahead. Rapid development of minerals have not only brought the PRC prominence in industrialization, but also in world affairs. Chinese mineral developments, especially petroleum, have been increasingly in the news. Oil and gas may have great potential, but a very large coal industry is already in existence. The steel industry ranks fifth or sixth in the world. The PRC is also prominent in fertilizer, cement, and salt production. The export metals are well known. Also, the country is buying heavily in nonferrous base metals. The need to know and the intense interest in the subject have prompted this study. The world significance of Chinese minerals is pointed out. The history of growth and PRC's mineral supply position are reviewed. Evaluations are made of policy considerations and regional and technical factors affecting mineral development. PRC's mineral trade and efforts to obtain equipment, supplies, and know-how are assessed. Specific reviews are made of major mineral sectors, including coal and power, oil and gas, iron and steel, nonferrous metals, industrial minerals, and fertilizers and chemicals. The overall outlook is summarized.

A conceptual scoping study was conducted to investigate pre-concentration options for upgrading ore from an Ag-Pb-Zn deposit. The low grade of the ore would result in only modest economic returns, given current market conditions. Several pre-concentration options were considered. These included: selective mining, crushing and pre-screening (following either standard or high intensity selective blasting), bulk ore sorting, particle sorting, jigging, dense medium separation, or combinations of these approaches. Flowsheets were developed for each option, and the upgrade performance was modelled using Limn to determine mass balances and stream tables. Due to the limited availability of test work data, the models were based not only on what test data was available but also on case study data found in the literature. The Bazin technique was used to derive assay by size data for different streams following crushing. Equipment lists and preliminary layouts were established based on the stream tables, and capital and operating costs were estimated for each flowsheet. This information was used to carry out a preliminary economic evaluation using net present value and sensitivity analysis. In this case, the most economically attractive process was found to be particle sorting; although further benefits may be realised by combining with bulk sorting. Elevation of surface charge density on colloidal particles in the presence of a high potential electrostatic field is demonstrated as a viable technique for preventing the accumulation of solids in solvent extraction circuits. The effect of the technique is manifest by relative turbidity measurements between pregnant leach solution and raffinate, by changes in the character of the sludge accumulations, by alteration of the zeta potential of particulates, and by a general reduction in the mass of solids.

"The principles involved in the use and application of mathematical models as an aid to the development of advanced process control computer systems are described briefly. This is followed by a brief survey of known models of this kind for the simulation of mining industry processes.The main part of the paper describes a dynamic model of the flotation process developed by Canadian General Electric. Using flotation rate constants for each species of mineral and gangue, the model provides a numerical solution of the differential equations describing cell behaviour. "A major use for many of the rare earths is in permanent magnets. While alternate technologies are in research or already exist, rare earth magnets are unlikely to be supplanted as a major input to clean technologies and high efficiency consumer and industrial devices. We’ll examine where and how the magnet rare earths are utilized and the size of the market. Market growth forecasts based on global markets will be presented. A brief explanation of materials research in the US completes the material.INTRODUCTIONRare earth magnets, first commercialized c.1969, have become essential for a wide range of consumer, industrial and military devices. They are used in the speakers and vibrator motors of cell phones. Rare earth magnets spin the hard discs within the drives and rare earth magnet voice coil motors position the read/write head over the spinning platter. Rare earth magnets are the heart of motors and generators used on airplanes – they are smaller and lighter weight than alternative materials/devices. Now rare earth permanent magnets are being introduced into electric vehicles and wind power generation.Rare earth minerals are difficult to extract from the ores and to separate from one another. The increase in use of rare earth magnets has placed a severe strain on established sources of supply. The establishment of new mines and processing facilities is costly and requires upwards of 15 years to become productive. The combination of rapid rise in use of rare earth minerals coupled with supply shortages has caused rapid price increases and threat of non-delivery of product. The result of this disruptive situation has been a profound response at several levels: corporate, industry-wide and governmental. Scrap beryllium chips ( nominally 96 to 97 percent Be ) were electrore fined in a prototype cell with 408 lb of electrolyte composed of 52.4 mole - percent LiCl , 36.3 mole - percent KC1 , and 11.3 mole - percent BeCl2 . The cell temperature was 500 ° C. In a typical 10-3 /4 - hour deposition cycle , 0.415 pound of metal was produced ; the metal contained impurities in parts per million as follows : C , 700 ; 0 , 610 ; Al , 34 ; Ca , 32 ; Cu , 20 ; Fe , 25 ; Mg , 9 ; and Mn , 23 . Operation of the prototype cell for 2 years demonstrated that adapting the electrorefining process to an enlarged scale of operation presented few difficulties in mechanical functions , maintenance of optimum operating conditions , and control of product purity . After the spent anode feed was leached in a 5 - percent nitric acid solution and the fine - sized particles were removed , it was recycled in some tests . The metal produced was somewhat higher in impurities than metal from the fresh scrap chips .

Os aços maraging apresentam baixo teor de carbono e possuem uma estrutura cristalina martensítica tetrágonal de corpo centrado (TCC). Estes aços oferecem uma combinação única de alta resistência mecânica e boa tenacidade à fratura. Nesse trabalho, foi realizado um estudo in situ de radiação síncrotron na busca de avaliar a estabilidade da austenita revertida no aço maraging 18%Ni grau 300. Um corpo de prova do aço em estudo com dimensões padronizadas foi solubilizado a 840°C por 1 hora e resfriada ao ar. Em seguida foi aquecida a uma taxa de 10°C/s até 630°C, mantendo-se então nesta temperatura pelo tempo de 12 minutos. Posteriormente a este tratamento, a amostra foi resfriada até a temperatura ambiente a taxa de 15°C/s. Em cada estágio de ciclo térmico foi realizada medidas de radiação síncrotron com comprimento de onda (? = 1.0332 Å). As frações volumétricas das fases austenita revertida e martensita presentes em cada etapa do ciclo térmico foram calculadas utilizando o método de comparação direta e através da área integrada relativa aos picos das fases. A estabilidade mecânica da austenita revertida sob carga externa foi estudada usando radiação in situ síncrotron.

"Testing was conducted to evaluate the effects of hydroacoustic cavitation (HAC) treatment on two bituminous coal slurries and the subsequent separation of each slurry in a classifying hydrocyclone. HAC treatment was performed using a pilot-scale circuit fabricated by Furness-Newburge Inc. The circuit was designed to induce cavitation by means of flow through an ultrasonic resonator chamber or enhanced cavitation by initial flow through a cavitation chamber followed by flow through the ultrasonic chamber. The test materials were nominal -1,500-micron and -150-micron Illinois-basin bituminous coal slurries, which were obtained from an operating coal preparation facility. After 5 sec of HAC treatment, the median size of the -1,500-micron material was reduced, with ash values for certain size fractions decreasing more than 5 percent compared with untreated samples. Extending treatment time led to greater degradation of the +1,180-micron material and an increase in the -25-micron material, with ash reductions occurring for material in the -850+150-micron size range. Size degradation was less for the -150-micron material. Subsequent separation of the treated slurries was carried out in a hydrocyclone with diameter of 102 mm. HAC treatment led to a decrease in the ash value and an increase in the heating value of the underflow stream compared with the feed material. For example, the ash value was reduced by about 16 percent for the -1,500-micron material and 25 percent for the -150-micron material with heating value increases of 7 and 33 percent, respectively, after HAC treatment. Overall, HAC treatment appeared to have a slight effect on the size selectivity curves.IntroductionUltrasound in the range of 20 to 1,000 kHz, referred to as power ultrasound, consists of high energy waves that can create zones of compression and expansion when used to irradiate liquids (Frederick, 1965; Leighton, 1994; Mason and Lorimer, 1988). This action generates varying pressure regions leading to cavitation or the formation, growth and near-immediate collapse of microscopic voids or bubbles (Frederick 1965; Leighton 1994; Mason and Lorimer 1988). Collapse occurs when the bubble reaches critical size and cannot absorb additional sound field energy, and the critical size is governed by the ultrasound frequency (Shchukin et al., 2011)."

Seamounts, submarine banks, volcanoes and undercurrent channels are prominent geomorphic features that have become an important target for minerals research and exploration with the goal of future exploitation. Polymetallic ferromanganese deposits are common types of mineralization on these settings. Co-rich ferromanganese crusts are important as potential resources of Mn and Co, but also Ti, Ni, Tl, REEs, PGEs, and other metals. Many seamounts and channels along the Atlantic Spanish continental margin are known to hold mineral deposits but are poorly studied. This work presents and briefly describes the most recent activities of the Spanish Geological Survey (IGME) on exploration and investigation of ferromanganese deposits along the Atlantic Spanish continental margin. Different submarine areas from the northwestern margin of the Iberian Peninsula to the west off Canary Islands have been surveyed by geophysical, sampling and underwater observations from 89 to 4000 m water depth. The mineral deposits cover a large diversity of submarine geological and geomorphical features: mud volcanoes and diapirs related to hydrocarbon seeps, seamounts associated with hot spot volcanism, hydrothermal vents in active magmatic volcanoes, structural basement highs and banks or contourite channels. Considering the collected dataset, we present the preliminary results of the study of these mineral deposits, including ferromanganese nodules and crusts and phosphate pavements and nodules, which can be considered as potential sources of raw materials.

"The weathering of coal mine waste rock releases iron, calcium, sulfate and associated trace elements like selenium (Se). Nitrogen species are also found in association with coal-mining drainages mainly due to the leaching of residual blasting compounds. Elevated concentrations of Se are a ubiquitous occurrence in coal-mining environments in British Columbia. A major concern with waterborne Se in British Columbia is the potential for its bioaccumulation in aquatic food chains.Treatment to remove Se from coal-mining waste waters has proven to be challenging for conventional water-treatment technologies. Compounding this challenge, many streams are characterized by high flows and low selenium concentrations. Conventional membrane and ion exchange treatments produce concentrated brine streams that are difficult to treat or require disposal. Conventional biotreatment systems use excess nutrients to provide the required electrons to compensate for inefficient and variable electron availability, as well as to adjust reactor chemistry.This paper's electro-biochemical reactor (EBR) technology provides a controllable and consistent supply of useable electrons to the microbes directly at a low voltage potential (1-3 V) and low current. In this manner, the EBR technology overcomes the shortcomings found in conventional systems, as it reduces the required nutrient addition and provides a more controllable, efficient, economical and robust biotreatment system. Additionally, the EBR process does not produce excess solids or biomass; therefore, solids management post-treatment is not required.Laboratory EBR bench-scale and on-site pilot-scale systems were used to treat five British Columbia coal-mine waste waters; influent Se concentrations ranged from 35 µg/L to 531 µg/L. Se treatment targets for the tested waters ranged from 5 to 10 µg/L. Mean Se concentrations in EBR effluents ranged from 0.5 µg/L to 1.4 µg/L, while reducing sulfate concentrations. The test data demonstrate that the EBR technology is an effective Se removal option for British Columbia’s coal-mining waste waters.IntroductionSelenium in Mining. Selenium (Se) is a naturally occurring trace element, which is an essential nutrient in small amounts (Thompson and Robinson, 1980; Brown and Arthur, 2001). However, it is also toxic to aquatic life, birds, and humans at very low concentrations. A major concern with waterborne Se is the potential for its bioaccumulation in aquatic food chains, resulting in acute and/or chronic toxicity to fish, water birds and amphibians (Besser et al., 1996; Conley et al., 2009)."

Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) is a pulse testing technique developed by the telecommunications and power industry for use in locating breaks in cables. Variations of this principle have been utilized in applications pertinent to closure and reclamation of coal operations. This paper focuses on applications of TDR technology in the mining industry including monitoring of slope movement, abandoned mine subsidence, ground water levels and subsurface LNAPLs, landfill cover performance, and consolidation of mine tailings. TDR technology has been particularly effective for remote automated monitoring, and alarm systems have been implemented for monitoring subsidence.

"The talc and soapstone deposits of Vermont have been worked more or less continuously for nearly 100 years, but all of the early efforts seem to have been directed toward the production of slabs for foot warmer, and other similar uses. Altho soapstone of good quality occurs at several places, much of the material first utilized was really talc and was not massive enough to be cut successfully. The grinding of talc in Vermont seems to have commenced in about 1902 and has shown continuous growth since that time. Statistics compiled by the Geological Survey in Mineral Resources of the ,United States show that the production of talc in Vermont has increased, from 8,978 short tons valued at $65,525 in 1905 to 93,960 short tons valued at $625,150 in 1917. Until 1917, New York was the leading producer in both tonnage and value with Vermont second, but in 1917, Vermont took the lead in tonnage produced, although not in value, with a production of over 47% of the total tonnage produced in the United States and over 35% of the world's pro-duction. This increase in production will probably be continued, though possibly at decreased rate, for the reserves of talc In Vermont are large.Active talc mines and mills in Vermont are found in four districts: Chester, Windsor County; Rochester, Windsor County; Waterbury, Washington County; and Johnson, Lamoille County, These mines and mills are distributed as shown in the following table:While there are a great many other known deposits of talc and soapstone in Vermont, some of which have been worked, those listed above are the only ones which have survived and are producing on a commercial basis. The closing down of many mines and quarries, for example, those at Perkinsville, Stockbridge, Reading, Cavendish, and Athens, has been attributed to several causes. Of these causes the most important seem to be exhaustion of the deposit, poor grade, long haul to the railroad, poor management due to lack of knowledge of mining methods and failure to consider talc mining strictly as a business proposition. The companies which are now operating with greatest apparent success are those which have realized the present and future possibilities of their industry, and have invested sufficient capital in both equipment and personnel to establish their companies on a firm business basis."

Designing and constructing tunnels in seismic prone areas present unique challenges to both designers and contractors. The Westside Purple Line Extension Project– Section 3 in Los Angeles requires crossing an active fault that may subject the tunnels to extreme structural demands. In order to ensure that the linings will safely accommodate the fault movement, a revolutionary composite section—steel plate embedded in the intrados of the precast concrete segmental tunnel lining was finally selected. Additionally, continuous expansion steel plates over the circumferential joints will be installed to mitigate the potential opening of the circumferential joints.

Gold occurrences have been reported in Alagbede, southwestern Nigeria, but a mineral potential map (MPM) to guide academics and investors in the area is still needed. As a result, geophysical methods (aeromagnetics and aero-radiometry) have been used to assess the potential for gold minerals in the area. Several enhancement filters, such as reduction to the equator, upward continuation, analytical signal, second vertical derivative, and power spectrum analysis, were applied to the aeromagnetic data to understand the subsurface geology better. The enhancement filters applied to airborne radiometry data are K/eTh, ternary color composite, F parameter, and deviation from the ideal K values (Kd). Geophysical data analysis was used for structural mapping and geological reconstruction, while aero-radiometric data was used for hydrothermal alteration mapping. The primary trend observed in the area’s magnetically inferred structural framework map is NE-SW, while a few are in the NW–SE and E-W trends. These observed trends show that the study area suffered at least three deformation episodes. Geological evidence of gold mineralization, such as favorable lithology, geological structure, and hydrothermal alterations, has been fused to produce a reliable MPM of the area. The geographical location of the existing mineral sites in the investigated area agrees with the geological structures and the MPM produced there. Thus, the systematic approach adopted in this study can be extended to other supracrustal belts of a typical Precambrian basement complex worldwide to ensure the reliability of orogenic gold mapping and resource management.
