Development during the year 1941 on the Texas Gulf Coast resulted in the dis covery of 27 new fields as compared to 26 fields for the year 1940. Drilling.—During the year, 1405 wells were drilled. Of this number, 1031 were completed as oil wells with 375,000 bbl. daily of new production; 50 were com pleted as gas wells and 324 were failures. The most active area was Jackson County, where 375 wells were drilled and 336 of them accounting for 190,000 bbl. daily of new production. Types of Fields.—Of the 2 7 new fields, 14 are considered to be oil fields, 8 are listed as gas-distillate fields and 5 as gas fields. This may be compared to 26 fields found in 1940, of which 14 were oil fields and 12 gas-distillate fields. Producing Sections.—Frio discoveries retained their predominant position by having 10 Frio fields discovered in comparison to 6 fields in the Wilcox, 4 in the Yegua, 5 in the Miocene and 2 in the Jackson. In the previous year 15 Frio fields were found, 4 in the Wilcox, 2 each in the Yegua, Cook Mountain and Miocene, and I in the Jackson. Production.—Production increased over 1940 approximately 10 per cent, being 113,726,893 bbl. for the year 1941 and 104,127,247 bbl. for 1940. The statistics in Tables I and 2 include distillate and condensate as oil production because no separate reports have been compiled. It is hoped that this separation may be possible some day, but as a great many fields produce both oil and distillate and these arc commingled in pipe lines, separation of statistics will be more difficult than for other areas. New Fields Big Hill, Jefferson County.—Stanolind Oil and Gas Company's No. I George D. Anderson was completed as a gas well from a Frio sand at 8705 to 8720 ft., on Dec. 24, 1941, after having been drilled to a depth of 9500 ft. Additional development is being carried on but it is not possible to evaluate this discovery at this time. Brushy Creek Field, Lavaca County.— Shell Oil Corporation's No. I D. G. McManus was completed as the discovery well in the Brushy Creek field on Oct. 29, 1941, from a Wilcox sand through perforations at 7225 to 7230 ft., making gas and 180 bbl. of 59° gravity distillate. This well was bottomed at 10,998 ft. in the Wilcox. No statement can be made at this time as to the importance of this discovery. Chenango Field, Brazoria County.—J. N. Rayzor et al. completed their No. I Sarah J. Christian through perforations at 8564 to 8572 ft. in a Frio sand, for 453 bbl. of 37.7° gravity oil, on Feb. 6, 1941, after having drilled to 9564 ft. Several wells were drilled in this area during the year but failed to establish important production. This is considered a minor discovery. Clodine Field, Fort Bend County.—Providence Oil Company's No. I Hatfield was the discovery well of the Clodine field, being completed through perforations at 7499 to 7502 ft. for 108 bbl. of 51.2° gravity distillate, on June 19, 1941. This report presents low-temperature tar data from studies by the Bureau of Mines of tars produced in an externally heated (entrained state) pilot-plant-scale retort. Analytical data covering 20 low-temperature tars, derived from the. carbonization of various ranks of foreign and domestic coals, are tabulated. The character of the tar is discussed in relationship to carbonizing conditions and the rank of coal. It is seen that in carbonization techniques that employ entrainment or fluidization of the coal particle, carbonization conditions are secondary to coal rank with respect to tar-oil yields and composition. The influence of distillation conditions on recoverable yields of tar products is presented. The probable yield of commercially important chemical products, based on a ton of pure (moisture- and ash-free) coal, are predicted. INTRODUCTION Low-temperature tars produced by entrainment or fluidized carbonization techniques that employ internally heated reactors represent the most nearly primary tart produced by industrial processes. In brief, such a process involves the application of a heat gradient to the coal particle "boiling" or suspended in a turbulent state in the reactor chamber. Conditions are observed so that the coal particle remains suspended within the reaction zone by a gas stream for a time interval commensurate with maximum tar-oil yield. The heat necessary for the carbonization reaction may be obtained entirely from the hot (preheated) gas stream, or it may be derived partly from the combustion of the volatile products and char by the transport gases, usually air. The volatile material moves out of the carbonizing zone at a rate that approaches the velocity of the transport gas. Carbonizing conditions are ideal when a minimum particle residence time is obtained within the reactor at a given temperature and a maximum yield of condensable volatile matter is released. In industrial practice this objective is a compromise.

Graton and Dr. Joseph Murdochl presented to the American Institute of Mining Engineers a notable contribution to economic geology under the title The Sulphide Ores of Copper. The liquid-level gage described in this report is an instrument designed to locate liquid levels in wells rapidly and accurately and, with auxiliary equipment described, to follow moving liquid levels automatically. The depth at which the instrument makes contact with the liquid in a well is indicated at the surface by a depth meter on the cable to which the instrument is attached. When the gage is used to follow a surging moving level, the liquid depth is indicated continuously at the surface. This report contains a description and illustrations of the gage and outlines the operating procedures. The instrument is 1-3/4 inches in diameter and approximately 6 feet in length and may be operated through 2-inch tubing. The gage consists essentially of a float that moves upward with respect to the rest of the assembly, causing a change in the flow of electric current from the surface when the liquid level is reached. The instrument has been tested under a variety of conditions and has been found to be sensitive to changes in liquid level of 1/2 inch. Its accuracy is limited principally by the accuracy of the wire-line depth indicator used. It is not affected by pressure or temperature, and it can be run in open hole or under pressure through a lubricator. It employs only one electric circuit and can be run on an Amergraph single-conductor cable (type 1-H-0) ,

Natural gas was first stored underground in Welland, County, Ontario Province, Canada, in 1915.3/ The following year natural gas in the United States was first stored underground successfully in the Zoar field near Buffalo, N, Y. Only three additional storage fields were in use in the United States in 1930, but by 1940 the number had increased to over 30, and since that time growth has been more rapid. At least 80 fields, with a combined storage capacity of 440,828 MM c. f ., were being utilized by 1949.4 / In May 1952, 142 storage projects having a capacity of 915,000 MM c.f. were in operation .5/ These fields are distributed from New York to California--from Michigan to Texas. In the Appalachian region alone, there are 101 storage fields with a combined capacity exceeding 526,000 MM cu. ft. Why Natural Gas is Stored Natural gas is stored in order to be readily available to meet the needs of consumers.

This Information Circular brings together for consideration recommendations from U.S. Bureau of Mines research in the area of surface mine mobile equipment maintenance for the period 1982 through 1991. It updates the 1982 contract report by Baker and Alves that formed the basis for much of the work described in the present report. Recommendations for hazard abatement during work on mobile one equipment are presented and stem from the results and recommendations of the research in two areas: (1) equipment and workplace hazard reduction, and (2) management of maintenance information. Recommendations included in this report apply to both the operators and maintainers of mobile mining equipment as well as to the manufacturers of that equipment.

One area in AG/SAG milling field which has received a great attention is the optimization of liner design for any application to increase the availability of mills. The Gol-E-Gohar iron ore concentration plant uses three 9m × 2.05m autogenous mills (AG) in parallel in a dry operation. The AG mill shell is lined with three series (57 cm each) of 36-row liners. Due to large variations in feed characteristics and inadequate blending, the performance of AG mills has been lower than the target value. Therefore, to improve the comminution efficiency, the optimization of the design of AG mill shell liners was applied in this plant. By simulation it was found that increasing the liner lifter face angle from 7 to 30° while maintaining the original lifter height (i.e., 22.5 cm) could provide an appropriate charge trajectory. Measurement of the wear profiles of shell liners indicated that the wear along the liner length was not uniform and the highest wear occurred between 0.5 m and 1.2 m of the mill length. A new liner design was proposed by redistributing the metal from parts with a lower wear rate to the parts with a higher wear rate to arrive at a uniform wear profile along the liner length at the liner removal time. The non-uniform shell liner was constructed and installed in one of the three parallel dry AG mills. It was found that the first and second liner designs increased the mill throughput by 2.6 and 7.5%, respectively. After conversion to SAG milling on the account of liner change, 18% (from 413 to 489 t/h) increase in throughput was realized. It was predicted that the non-uniform liner designs will increase the liner life time by 10% and will reduce the scrap metal from the current value of 59% to 50%.

The Karara Mine concentrator commenced operation in November 2012 to produce high-grade magnetite concentrate. The circuit consists of three stages of comminution plus magnetic separation at each stage for early gangue rejection. High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) are used for fine crushing, followed by ball mills and TowerMills in secondary and fine grinding duties respectively. In recent times, the plant throughput rate has had to exceed design by 18% to maintain the targeted concentrate productivity. Meanwhile, the ore hardness has increased by 25% to 15 kWh/t, leading to changes in the circuit operation and design. These changes led to coarser and harder feed to the TowerMill circuit that affects the subsequent separation processes. Nippon Eirich (the TowerMill manufacturer) has partnered with Karara Mining Limited (Karara) to optimise the TowerMill circuit operation to achieve a circuit product with an 80% passing (P80) of 35 µm. Several activities, including a TowerMill circuit audit and performance evaluation, multi-component analysis, modelling and simulation, were carried out as part of the optimisation exercise. The circuit audit results revealed that the TowerMill circuit feed size F80 had increased and ranged from 67–75 µm. The circuit product P80 ranged between 42–55 µm. The average circuit specific energy was 3.4 kWh/t. Moreover, the differences in density between magnetite and gangue minerals had affected the hydrocyclone performance where the efficiency curve exhibits coarse end deflection indicating that low-density coarse material was bypassing to the overflow stream. A multi-component analysis was carried out to further investigate the coarse end deflection of the hydrocyclone efficiency curve. The analysis showed that the magnetite and gangue minerals had different cut sizes of 32 and 64 µm respectively. Furthermore, 33% of the magnetite (below 35 µm) was being recycled back to the mill due to the density effect. Based on these findings, several recommendations for process improvement were identified and implemented including:• converting to a bottom feeding configuration to improve the grinding efficiency in the mill• additional grinding power in the fine grinding duty to compensate for the increase in plant throughput and ore hardness• improved classification efficiency by converting to smaller size hydrocyclones. Simulation studies carried out to evaluate the impact of these implementations had indicated that a P80 close to 35 µm with a steeper size distribution could be achieved by using the bottom feed configuration with additional grinding power. The TowerMill circuit was converted to bottom feed configuration and the performance was evaluated. The operating work index, size specific energy and circulating load were 30% lower than the top feed configuration, indicating that the bottom feed configuration had a higher grinding efficiency. This paper discusses the outcome of the circuit audit, multicomponent analysis, circuit simulations, improvement strategies and quantification of the improvements. "Through-the-Earth (TTE) radio has been proposed as a means of emergency communications in mines. The propagation of a TTE radio signal depends chiefly on the subsurface conductivity distribution. Robust forward models of signal propagation can be computed based on a realistic conductivity estimate. These models can be used, for example, to optimize frequency, estimate signal range, identify zones of anomalously strong or weak signals, or to optimize the position of the above-ground TTE radio unit. A method was developed to determine the conductivity distribution of a mine overburden using TTE radio transmission data. At multiple locations in an underground test mine, we recorded a wideband electromagnetic signal, spanning a frequency range of approximately 500 to 8,500 Hz, transmitted from a vertical magnetic dipole at the surface. Using a finite-difference time-domain forward modeling code, a layered Earth conductivity model that accounts for topography was fitted to the observed data, which minimizes the difference between the calculated and observed attenuations for each transmitter-receiver pair, for each frequency of interest. Introduction and objectiveThrough-the-Earth (TTE) radio has been proposed for emergency underground communications. The most common type of TTE radio is based on the transmission and reception of signals by electromagnetic induction. These signals are in the extremely low to very low frequency range — in practice, between 400 and 9,000 Hz. This technology was historically developed for mine safety, although recently other applications have been suggested, such as communications in civilian infrastructure like high-rise buildings or tunnels, in the military, and even for wireless detonation and activation. In a coal mine, which is a setting of particular importance for TTE radio due to the higher risk of accidents, day-to-day communications can be done through a wired link. High-frequency line-ofsight systems, whose signals cannot penetrate rock, are also used for communications from nonfixed points. Another option is a leaky feeder system, which is a permutation of a line-ofsight system and a wired link, where a partially shielded coaxial cable allows the signal to “leak” (Delogne, 1982). In an incident such as a mine collapse or explosion, a TTE radio system can still provide a communication link, as wired systems can be severed, and line-ofsight systems cannot penetrate through collapsed portions of the mine, or to the surface (Forooshani et al., 2013; Yarkan et al., 2009)."

No presente trabalho analisou-se a influência de diferentes microestruturas obtidas através de tratamentos térmicos, sobre a resistência à corrosão de um aço microligado, na solução A segundo a norma NACE TM0284-11. Foi utilizada chapa de um aço destinado à conformação de tubo API 5L X65 para confeccionar as amostras. Algumas destas foram submetidas a tratamentos térmicos (Temperado, Temperado seguido de revenimento, esferoidização) e o restante foi utilizado tal como recebido. Os materiais foram submetidos a ensaios de polarização linear, num eletrólito composto por 0,5% ácido acético e 5% cloreto de sódio (solução A, NACE TM0284-11) fazendo-se purga com N2 e injeções de H2S. Foram realizados exames em microscópio óptico. Os valores de resistência de polarização mostraram que a ordem decrescente de resistência à corrosão de acordo com o tratamento térmico foi: (Esferoidizada) > (Tal Como Recebido) > (Temperada, Temperada e Revenida). Tal fato pode ser explicado pela quantidade de interfaces presentes em cada microestrutura (cementita globulizada em matriz ferrítica; ferrita com perlita; martensita e martensita revenida), sendo que quanto menor a área de interfaces, maior o valor para resistência à corrosão.

necessidade de elevados patamares de competitividade na indústria do aço tem levado à utilização cada vez mais frequente, por parte daqueles que utilizam lingotamento contínuo, de ferramentas de modelagem matemática da solidificação. A construção dessas ferramentas, por sua vez, possui uma etapa importante de validação, onde devem ser comparados os resultados simulados com dados reais do processo sendo estudado. Dessa forma, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo utilizar critérios metalúrgicos de qualidade e processo no lingotamento contínuo para auxiliar na construção e validação de um modelo matemático da solidificação de tarugos de aço. Uma vez que há na literatura diversas formulações para os coeficientes de transferência de calor na refrigeração primária (molde) e secundária (zona de sprays), foram realizadas análises – a luz dos critérios metalúrgicos – dos resultados simulados com nove combinações dessas formulações, sendo possível, ao final, determinar qual combinação melhor modela o processo (ou máquina) em estudo.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to evaluate superplastic behavior in commercial magnesium-base alloys AZ6IA, ZK60A, ZW3, AZ3IB, ZWI, and an experimental Mg-12 pct Al alloy. Strain-rate sensitivity indices (m-values), maximum elongations, and effects of superplastic elongation on tensile properties were determined on fine-grained sheet. Inert-gas-pressure hemisphere-forming tests were conducted on selected sheet stock of the five alloys. Formability trials on AZ31B alloy sheet were conducted on industrial equipment for comparison with commercial superplastic forming of Zn-AI alloy. Closed-die-forming tests were performed on extruded ZK60A rod. All alloys exhibited well over 100-pct elongation, indicating superplasticity, at temperatures and strain rates near the maximum m-values. Tensile properties were generally reduced following 100-pct superplastic elongation, but not to an extent that would preclude use of the commercial alloys in the superplastically deformed condition. The potential for industrial superplastic forming of AZ31B sheet was indicated by hemisphere forming in the laboratory and substantiated in industrial forming trials.

The material published in this report is part of a special study of some of the chemical and physical properties of Alabama coals. The complete study included friability and grindability determinations, high and low temperature assay distillation tests, and ash fusion-temperature determinations. Proximate and ultimate analyses and. calorific values of the coal samples also were obtained. This paper is concerned only with grindabilities, although proximate analyses have been included to give a better picture of the problem as a whole. The growing interest in grindabilities of coals is a result of the increase in use of pulverized fuel in rescent years. The tenative ball-mill grindability method D408-35T4/ was used in making all the determinations. The method of sampling and the technic of the testing procedure is described in Considerable detail in this report because the procedure was established quite recently. The ball-mill grindability index is a measure of the ease with which coal may be ground, which may be an important factor in estimating pulverizing costs. Up to the present time few data on the grindability of Alabama coals have been published. The data in this paper show that the Warrior and Cahaba fields exhibit a wide range of grindability in their coals. The mines tested are well distributed throughout the productive areas of these fields, and it is possible to make rough estimates of the grindabilities of coals not listed in this report from the data given for mines situated in the same vicinity.

"A model of the flotation process can be used effectively for design and control. For design purposes it can be used to predict the performance of a large plant from laboratory and pilot plant data. It can be used for control purposes to assess the utility of any proposed operating modification to an existing plant, and it can also be used to determine optimal control settings for best operating performance.A model has been developed that will allow for variations in feed properties and for variations in fineness of grind. The model can be used to assess the effects of reagent addition rate, aeration rate and pulp level on plant performance and these are the control variables that are used individually or together in all operating flotation plants. The model provides for a distribution in the values for flotation rate constants, particle size and mineral fraction, and, because of its complexity, requires a large computer when it is to be applied to a typical plant configuration. The computational method that is used to apply this model to such configurations is described in this paper, and particular attention is paid to the problem of allowing for feedback of tailings from cleaners and recleaners."
