"Chromite concentrate after beneficiation can not be directly used in the electric furnace. Therefore sintering is one of the effective way to agglomeration, by which the chromite concentrate can be utilized and the power cost of ferrochrome smelting can be reduced. The properties of raw materials and the sintering process of chromite concentrate were studied in this work. The results showed that chromite concentrate used can hardly granulated alone, while chlorite addition can improve the effect of granulation. Moisture plays an important role in sintering process. The granulation effect is optimal when the amount of water addition is 12%. Strength and abrasion index are the evaluation indexes of sinter quality. It was found that the strength of sinter increased with coke dosage increasing to 12%, and then decreased when it continuously increased. Opposite regularities were found for the abrasion index of the sinter.1 IntroductionChromium is a very important metal element which is mostly used in the production of stainless steel. In the earth, it is always formed compound with iron as ferrochromium spinel (FeO.Cr203), and its mineralogical name is chromite.[1] Currently, the global production of chrome ore is about 20 million tonnage every year , in which fine ore (less than 8 mm) accounted for about 80% [2] Although the price of the fine ore is cheaper than the lump one, too much fines will lead to the poor permeability and causes increased electricity consumption while producing ferrochrome. Therefore, the agglomeration process of chrome ore is one of the effective measures to increase the usage ratio of fine ore."

NOT WITHSTANDING the extremely low ebb of business activity, the nonmetallic industries have fared somewhat better than some other branches of mining. The average price level in nonmetallics, although far from satisfactory, has resisted any cataclysmic fall such as has been suffered by copper and other metals. Stocks, also, though too abundant, represent no corresponding overhang of the market, which should result, in some branches, in a more rapid recovery. Research work has continued in some industries with interesting developments.

"This paper discusses energy use and conservation in the primary copper industry and illustrates eco-efficiency considerations, using select examples of practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated primary copper producer and others in the industry that promote eco-efficiency. The World Council for Sustainable Business Development first publicized the concept of eco-efficiency at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. Eco-efficiency is a management concept linking environmental and economic performance and is aimed at generating added value for a business through, among other things, increased resource and energy conservation and reduced environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of the product or service. This concept differs from sustainable development in that focus is only on economic and environmental factors and does not include social considerations. In the metal mining and processing context, this added value can be realized by implementing practices that promote conservation of water and mineral resources, conservation of energy, minimization of waste, reduced emissions and effluents and increased recycling. The examples from the primary copper industry used to illustrate eco-efficiency considerations include: water and energy conservation in mineral processing, adoption of flash and bath smelting processes, emission reduction and process improvement associated with fire-refining, implementation of green chemistry in electrorefining, promoting product stewardship initiatives and fostering renewable energy project on disturbed mined lands.INTRODUCTION ASARCO LLC (Asarco) was organized in 1899 as the American Smelting And Refining Company. Originally a consolidation of several lead-silver smelting companies, it evolved over the years into an integrated producer of primary non-ferrous metals, including copper, lead and zinc and associated co-products. Grupo México, S.A.B. de C.V acquired Asarco in 1999. Today, Asarco is a vertically integrated producer of primary refined copper and associated co-products such as gold, silver, molybdenum, selenium and tellurium. Asarco operates three open-pit mines and mills, two leach, solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) plants and a copper smelter in Arizona and a copper refinery in Texas."

Plastic deformation in magnesium single crystals was studied by tensile tests at room temperature utilizing an improved preparation and testing technique. Consistent critical resolved shear stress values for basal slip were obtained. The advent of pyramidal slip at room temperature was rationalized upon the basis of grip constraints. A bend-twinning hypothesis was advanced as an explanation of mechanical twinning which occurs as a complex stress-relief mechanism. INVESTIGATIONS of the plastic deformation of magnesium have been limited to the determination of the fundamental kinetics which may be summarized as follows: 1—Twinning on the {102).l 2— Slip on the (001) plane in the [loo] direction at room temperature.' 3—Slip on the {101) or {102) plane in the [loo] direction above 225°C." 4—Critical resolved shear stresses for basal slip in tension at room temperature of 83 g per sq mm with a variation from 57 to 127 g per sq mm." Bakarian' studied the compression of thin wafers of magnesium single crystals and classified the components of the deformation mechanisms as follows: 1—The Basal field: (001) at an angle of less than 20" to the compression surface. Fracture along {101} or slip on (001) followed by {101} fracture. 2—The prism field: (001) at an angle greater than 60" to the compression surface. Twinning on the {102) generally occurring during the early stages of loading, basal slip in the areas of original orientation and (001) slip within twins. 3—The central field: (001) at angles greater than 20" but less than 60" to the compression surface. Slip on the (001). 4—The critical resolved shearing stress for {101} slip above 225°C was 400 g per sq mm. Observations of mechanical twins in hexagonal close-packed metals have been summarized by numerous investigatorsb-' emphasizing a lateral or rotational atomic adjustment, in addition to the pure twinning shear, and the importance of reorienting the basal plane to a position more favorable for continued slip, rather than the resulting small dimensional changes. Criterion for the operative twinning planes has not been clearly established. Schmid and Boas hurmised that an energy condition related to the atom movements is the determining factor. MillerQ bserved that twinning stresses in zinc crystals decreased as the amount of prior deformation increased. Workshops were held in eight states during the period from December 12. 1975. through June 25, 1976, under U. S. Bureau of Mines Contract to the University of Missouri-Rolla. The workshops were designed to help define the Bureau's research and development priorities. At each workshop a summary of the current Bureau mine reclamation research was presented which was followed by identification of problems associated with mine land reclamation in the state where the meeting was being held. Discussions included the seriousness of problems locally and how the Bureau could best undertake research to assist the state in solving the problems identified. Participants included representatives of state agencies, educational institutions, and companies involved in surface mining. Attendance at these workshops totaled 201 persons who displayed a wide variety of opinions and ideas as to what should be done In government research and development efforts. A breakdown of these attendees is as follows: 91 state and Federal employees; 69 mine operators, equipment manufacturers and consultants; 33 educators and researchers; and 8 others representing such varied interests as environmental and conservation groups, news media and students .

En este trabajo se analizan algunas posibilidades de tratamiento de la atacamita con el objeto de posibilitar la extracción del cobre que contiene, así como la del oro que muchas veces acompaña a estos minerales. Se ha probado el esquema lixiviación ácida de cobre seguido de cianuración, así como la flotación y segregación. Los resultados indican que existe una gran posibilidad de tratarlos con éxito mediante métodos de segregación.

Esse trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da adição de diferentes teores de coque verde de petróleo (5, 15 e 30%) nas propriedades termoplásticas de misturas de carvões contendo carvão nacional da camada barro branco. A caracterização termoplástica das misturas foi realizada a partir de testes de plastometria Gieseler e dilatometria Audibert-Arnu. A caracterização dos carvões mostrou que o carvão nacional possui propriedades termoplásticas muito superiores aos demais carvões. Por consequência, verifica-se que a sua introdução nas misturas causa aumento das propriedades termoplásticas nos testes de plastometria e dilatometria. O coque verde de petróleo, em contrapartida, é um aditivo inerte e atua como um depressor das propriedades termoplásticas. Constatou-se que a adição do coque verde de petróleo às misturas causa redução da fluidez, do intervalo plástico e dilatação nos testes realizados. A sinergia entre do carvão nacional de alta fluidez e o caráter inerte do coque de petróleo mostrou-se vantajoso.

It was first pointed out in 1934 by Gaudin (1) that the "oily" oxidation product of the alkyl xanthate ion-dialkyl dixanthogen, might be the "active flotation agent" on sulphide minerals and there have been a number of studies supporting this hypothesis (2,3,4). However, all of these studies have relied largely on electrochemical evidence. Galena, being a semiconductor, may be used as an electrode in aqueous solution and it was shown that ethyl xanthate ion does not adsorb with charge transfer in the absence of oxygen unless the potential of the galena surface is above -100 mv versus the hydrogen electrode (H2 E). At this potential the galena surface is slightly hydrophobic but does not become strongly hydrophobic unless the potential is raised to 210 mv (versus H2 E). It is suggested that, at potentials of 210 mv or above, ethyl xanthate ions are oxidised to diethyl dixanthogen and that chemisorption of oxygen raises the galena surface to this potential. On the other hand, examination of xanthated galena surfaces by chemical or physical methods (5,6,7) has failed to detect dixanthogen and it has been shown that dixanthogen may be reduced to lead xanthate at a lead sulphide surface. It was suggested by Leja and Poling (5) that, as dixanthogen is a neutral molecule it would not be repelled by the negatively charged galena surface so that the adsorption was envisaged as taking place through homogeneous oxidation of the xanthate ion to dixanthogen, adsorption and reduction of the dixanthogen to a chemisorbed lead xanthate species. In paper I of this series (11) it was shown that the thiosulphate ion, which forms on galena surfaces in slurries at the pH normally used for flotation, will reduce dixanthogen. There is, therefore, the impasse that the electrochemical evidence requires that xanthate ion be oxidised to dixanthogen at the galena surface while the chemical evidence shows that the reverse reaction takes place.

EXAMINATION by metallographic and X-ray diffraction means of an austenitic steel containing 0.06 pct C, 1.26 pct Mn, 0.38 pct Si, 21.15 pct Ni, 18.72 pct Cr, 3.07 pet W, and 9.14 pet Mo indicated that a - phase, which had not been reported in the literature, existed in this steel. Both the s and car-bides of the M6 C type were present in the as-forged steel. The carbides dissolved completely in the aus-tenite at approximately 2200°F (1205°C). The s, however, was present at all temperatures up to the solidus temperature of the steel at approximately 2375°F (1300°C). Ferrite was not found in any condition of the steel. The faintness of some of the s lines in X-ray patterns obtained from samples of the steel made it desirable to isolate the s prior to verification of its entire pattern. It was found that the s phase could be separated from samples of the steel which had been water quenched from 2250°F (1230°C) by dis-

While it is commonly known that the precious metals and to some extent copper occur in the native state, it is less known that mercury, iron, nickel, and cobalt do occur also in the native state; the last three (Fe, Ni, and Co) usually occur together in form of an alloy. The particle size varies greatly from less than 10 microns (gold and mercury) to about 400 tons boulders (copper).

In gold processing plants, the water from the cyanidation stages is treated to detoxify cyanide species and this recycle water becomes the main part of the process water. Despite the low concentration of free and weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanides in process water, the recoveries of gold and silver is still affected during flotation, especially when gold and silver are associated with iron sulfide minerals. This is a case at the Hidden Valley (HV) Mine. In this study, the effect of free and WAD cyanides on gold and silver recoveries by flotation from the HV Mine was considered.WAD cyanide (WAD CN) was prepared by mixing sodium cyanide and copper sulfate at a cyanide to copper ratio of 3:1 dosed at different cyanide concentrations. It was found that both free and WAD CN depressed gold and silver and particularly iron sulfides in flotation. The depressed gold and silver recoveries were closely associated with the depressed recovery of iron sulfide minerals, suggesting that free and WAD CN may not depress the flotation of liberated gold and silver minerals significantly. It was also found that 10 ppm free cyanide completely depressed the flotation of iron sulfide minerals and WAD CN depression is probably through the WAD dissociation to free cyanide species (mainly aqueous HCN) during the grinding process, resulting from a decrease in pH. Thermodynamic calculation showed that 5.5 ppm free cyanide was released in the end of grinding at an initial WAD CN concentration of 50 ppm. This is something new in my life. A lot of you men here today I do not know, and some I do know. So if you have any remarks to make, I wish you would give your name and the name of your company. This is the first Acid Meeting which has been held under the auspices of the National Open-Hearth Steel Conference, and I hope it is a success. Whether it is a success or not depends entirely upon the support we get. If it does get good support, I have the idea it will be continued as a regular feature of the National Open-Hearth Steel Conference. We all think we have pretty good practices. But we can all learn and I hope that you, gentlemen, who take issue with the things someone else has said will stand up and give your opinions. Otherwise, the meeting will fall rather flat, and we won't get a great deal out of it; and there will not be enough interest shown by the National Committee to continue to place the meeting on the regular yearly program.

Rockburst events have been a serious problem for many years in many mines worldwide, and in particular at El Teniente mine in Chile. El Teniente is the largest copper mine in the world, located in the Andes Cordillera where high stress levels are present due to intensing mining activity in addition to complex geology. Consequently, the study and management of the rockburst threat are necessary. In this work, the case of the Diablo Regimiento (DR) mine within El Teniente is studied. The energy capacity of dynamic support systems is determined for different tunnel geometries based on two kinetic methodologies, using data from DR. Initially, rockburst potential is determined by means of a stress analysis around different tunnel geometries through the boundary elements method. In the first methodology a yielding zone (YZ) is estimated for each excavation geometry using the finite element method FEM. The second methodology involves the definition and determination of a critical strain energy (SE) around each excavation geometry using a FEM numerical analysis. In both cases, peak particle velocity PPV is estimated by a scaling law, which is subsequently adjusted due to tunnel amplification effects. According to the results, and knowing the working energy capacity applied in DR mine, it was found that the values of energy capacity for the rock dynamic supports were better estimated by the YZ-PPV approach than by the SE approach.

The Bureau of Mines is sponsoring a variety of long-term, high-risk research to advance state-of-the-art technology in U.S. underground coal mining. This report reviews the status of many Bureau projects that support fundamental underground coal mining operations; the project areas include cutting coal from the solid (extraction), hauling coal from the face (transport), and activities that sustain daily operations (logistics). Innovative equipment and technology have been developed, with these major objectives: to significantly improve coal mine productivity, to further advance coal recovery and personal safety within the mining industry, and to reduce the time needed to develop longwall panels. The majority of the prototype equipment covered in this report either has undergone or will undergo comprehensive evaluation at Bureau surface test facilities so that performance and reliability can be improved before the equipment is tested and evaluated in a working section underground.

"The use of recycled water in flotation has significant effects on flotation and selectivity because the recycled water contains many dissolved compounds and ions that alter the chemistry of the system. In this study, the effects of calcium, magnesium and sulfate, which are abundant components in recycled water, were investigated on galena, sphalerite and pyrite flotation using pure minerals and a complex sulfide ore by conducting bench-scale flotation, microflotation and zeta potential measurements. The bench-scale flotation tests indicated that higher recoveries of galena and sphalerite are obtained when water is recycled, due to higher concentrations of ions in recycled water. However, there was a critical ion concentration for galena recovery. The microflotation tests showed that galena recoveries at different pHs in recycled water are lower than in tap and distilled water. Pure sphalerite recoveries improved in recycled water in the bench-scale test with ore. Pure pyrite was depressed with recycled water as well. Zeta potentials became less negative with increased calcium and magnesium ion concentrations due to their adsorptions, and the presence of sulfate ions was seen to increase the negative charges of sphalerite and pyrite, conversely for galena. IntroductionWater is among the most important elements for mining and mineral processing. The distance to water sources is one of the major factors for mine site selection. The mining and mineral processing sector needs and consumes large quantities of water. In Chile in 2014, the copper mining sector alone consumed 12.7 m3/s fresh water for 1.189 tons of ore processing, and recycled 74 percent of the consumed water (Chilean Copper Commission, 2015). A plant that does not reuse or recycle any water will require 1.9 to 3.0 m3 of water per ton of ore processed (Gunson et al., 2012). Many stages of mineral processing, such as grinding, gravity concentration, dense medium separation, wet magnetic separation, flotation and hydrometallurgical operations, use large volumes of water (Schumann, Levay and Ametov, 2009).In mineral processing plants, the process water is recycled from the tailings dams, thickener overflows, and dewatering and filtration units. Wet concentration processes can require large quantities of water. Flotation, the most common process, typically takes place at 25 to 35 percent solids by mass. Most flotation plants practice at least some water reuse and recycled. Modern mines and mineral processing operations generally aim for zero water release (Levay, Smart and Skinner, 2001). In most cases, water quality has been found to affect flotation performance, and this interaction remains under investigation."

Mill operating teams are expected to engage in a perpetual quest for process improvement – pushing the boundaries of practical process limits and testing new technology to achieve the next step-change in plant performance. Often the barrier to improvement lies in gaining management approval for process changes.Getting approval for investment in novel technology carries an added degree of difficulty, particularly in risk-averse operations, when it challenges conventional wisdom. A case in point is a new technology for controlling variability in slurry distribution. There is a widely held view that less-than-specified classification efficiency and spraying and roping of individual units in a hydrocyclone cluster, must be accepted as unavoidable. That these are wholly correctable deficiencies resulting from unequal loading of the individual units seems a bold claim. Wouldn’t the high turbulence of pumped slurries overcome all potential for segregation of solids? This paper discusses how the task of developing confidence in a new technology can be approached by a combination of physical modelling at small scale, and full-scale operating experience. Proving efficacy then leads to the next task: demonstrating value. Again, the particular technology serves as an example that could be of value to others developing relatively low-cost technologies. A high-pay-off as an investment may be achieved with improvements in metallurgical performance that are small in relation to normal process variations. This has led to an exploration of how process simulation modelling could be used, in conjunction with production data, to provide a benchmark for the expected change, which could be expressed in monetary terms.The next goal, which is currently being achieved in operating plants, is to realise the greater value now available through the optimisation of cyclone configuration, which becomes practical when the confounding effects of cluster instability are removed through equal loading.CITATION:Doig, S G, Algie, S H, Lovatt, I A and Knoblauch, E J, 2018. There are two approaches to developing a minicomputer based application for an industrial grinding circuit. Usually, the control program is coded and compilation-debugged on a large-scale scientific computing system or the minicomputer itself if the machine is available. Final debugging and testing must wait for installation and checkout of the entire minicomputer system. Two immediate disadvantages of this approach are the need to obtain, install and check out the hardware before the final debugging stages of program development can begin, and interference with normal mill operation during such final testing. This work reports on an alternative to the usual procedure. Here both compilation and execution bugs are eliminated from the application program before hardware installation by testing the control program against a reasonable dynamic simulation of the entire process. Thus, software development can be completed before the target mini is installed. Such off-line development requires a reasonably accurate mathematical model for the entire process system as well as a suitable simulation package for communication between the simulated environment and the minicomputer application program. Specific data describing the design configurations and dimensions of the mills, cyclones, sumps, pump characteristics and analog controller configuration were supplied by ANAMAX for a grinding division consisting of a rod mill followed by two ball mills in parallel. This information was used to set up a plausible model structure. Steady state ANAMAX data on particle size analysis at various points in the circuit and corresponding values of flow rates, pump speeds, sump heights and slurry densities were used for model parameterization. The preferred operating control strategy - "best grind at operator-set rod mill feed rate" - was set by ANAMAX. An inferential particle size analysis technique using the cyclone cluster as an on-line particle size sensor was used in a novel control strategy_ to achieve the stated objective. Two disturbances common in the ANAMAX circuits - rod mill scoop pluggage and shut down/start up of one of the ball mills - were studied in detail. This report out- lines the steps in system development and testing and the results obtained.

Asimismo, la vida de una mina a tajo abierto se divide en tres períodos: operación inicial, período normal de producción y período final de producción, considerando que dicho planeamiento se realice en las operaciones de este período.

CoaLiquid, Inc. (CLI) has been in the coal- oil-mixture (COM) business for over five (5) years. The initial pilot processing facility was replaced by a 2000 barrel per day commercial production facility in August of 1979. For over two (2) years CLI has been expanding its efforts and conducting large scale production and combustion demonstrations successfully in many locations across the United States. To facilitate the marketing effort, CLI has recently constructed a special trailer containing all equipment needed for a temporary COM retrofit. CoaLiquid has conducted commercial scale combustion demonstrations in the following types of combustion units: kilns, calciners, industrial boilers, blast furnaces and driers.
