Iron oxides are unique in that they are the only significant colored mineral found in a natural state suitable for use as a pigment after being pulverized to pigmentary size. The current world production of iron oxide pigments is estimated by the author to be between 499 and 590 kt (550,000 and 650,000 st) based on 1979 data. The fact that highly colored natural deposits of iron ore are found throughout the world accounts for its use in prehistoric man's artistic cave paintings. These early artists did not realize that they had established man's first paint test fence which now has some 20,000 years of exposure. In addition to abundance, constituting about 7 % of the earth's crust, iron oxides have the advantages of low cost, permanency, and are not toxic. Through the centuries, succeeding civilizations have utilized iron oxides as a major source for decoration and protection when coloring was desired. In the last century the chemical industry has improved on nature by developing a complete range of synthetic iron oxide pigments which surpass the pigments produced from natural iron ores in uniformity, color quality, and chemical purity. In the United States alone, the combined production of natural and synthetic iron oxides produced sales of over $28,000,000 in 1970 (Stipp, 1970) and increasing to $97 million by 1980 (Spinrad, 1980). Nomenclature With the increasing importance of the synthetic iron oxides it is necessary to make a distinction between the natural or mineral pigments and the synthetic pigments. Natural pigments are those products which are derived from selected ores and should not be confused with iron ores mined for steel production. Iron ores that are mined for steel must be capable of being mined and reduced to iron on a commercial basis. These ores are selected on the basis of iron content and processing economics. It is therefore unusual when iron ores for steel production are suitable for use as mineral pigments. Natural pigment ore sources are selected for their special physical-chemical properties and can command a premium price. Synthetic pigments, and in this instance iron oxides, are those pigments produced from basic chemicals. Through chemical synthesis pigmentary sized particles are produced as opposed to comminution, the major procedure common to all natural iron oxide pigments. Classification An important characteristic of a pigment is its color and, therefore, a logical separation can be made on this basis. A. Yellow Iron Oxide Pigments 1. "According to the geometrical characteristics of triangular meshes, Triangular Mesh Split Model (TMSM) based on a finite element method is proposed to simulate cracks propagation of fractured rock. With TMSM, stress intensity factors at the tip of cracks are obtained by far-field contour integral. Meanwhile, vector cross multiplication is adopted to fix the cracking unit, and maximum circumferential stress criterion is used to determine the crack propagation angle. Then crack dynamic propagation simulation is realized through local mesh split or node movement at crack tip. With this method, the crack can split apart a unit or extend along the mesh boundary, so the crack could extend along an arbitrary path and is not restricted by the initial mesh. The applicability of the mesh split algorithm is verified by the crack propagation examples of wing crack and multi-fractured rock mass with holes. The results show that this method not only has higher accuracy of fracture parameters calculation, but also can accurately simulate the crack initiation and propagation of rock under complex stress state such as tension, compression and shear. In addition, the far contour integral is introduced to determine the crack tip stress intensity factor and there is no need to reconstruct a singular element at the crack tip or to intensify the meshes. Compared with the existing mesh reconstruction algorithm, this method significantly improves the computational efficiency.INTRODUCTIONGenerally, rock is neither the full continuum, nor entirely discrete body, but rich in geological defects, such as joints and cracks. A large amount of geotechnical engineering practice shows that most fracture of rock is closely related to the internal joints, cracks and crack expansion (Horii et al., 1985; Wong et al., 1998). Although the classical theory of fracture mechanics established the theoretical foundation of crack initiation, propagation, so far it is still extremely difficult to characterize the propagation of airfoil-typed crack and the interference problem of multiple cracks. Up to now, the micromechanics mechanism research of crack propagation of fractured rocks has still been a hot research topic of rock fracture mechanics."

Soil liquefaction is a dangerous phenomenon that involves huge damages during strong earthquake ground motion event. Stone columns (SCs) are widely used as liquefaction mitigation element which is expected to perform the improvements against liquefaction hazard by densifying, increasing the stiffness and rapid dissipation of excess pore water pressure in the surrounding soil. Although in the recent times few studies on the behaviour of stone columns in the seismic zone has evolved, the performance of SCs in the multi-layered soils is not extensively examined. This paper presents the numerical investigations on the performance of SCs installed in the multi-layered soils as a liquefaction mitigation measure against the seismic loading. The acceleration time histories, Excess Porewater Pressure (EPP), vertical displacement and stress ratio evaluated along different depths using PLAXIS 2D. With the installation of stone column there is a considerable reduction in the acceleration amplitude, which in turn reduces the EPP and vertical displacement at different locations and the amplitude of reduction depends on the soil stiffness levels at the depth.

Two series of laboratory flotation tests were carried out to study the treatment of Faraday ore by two-stage flotation. First the acid-consumers and then the uranium minerals were floated. On ore ground in the Faraday mill grinding circuit, and using Faraday mill water in the flotation step, a recovery in the flotation concentrate of from 91 to 93 percent of the uranium was obtained in 45 to 50 per cent of the weight at a grade of 0.24 per cent U30s. The saving of acid in leaching the uranium-bearing flotation concentrate, as compared to leaching the whole ore, ranged from 30 to 46 per cent. The average over-all extraction resulting from flotation and leaching of the flotation concentrate was 88.1 per cent. The best collector for the acid-consumers was sodium oleate. Acintol F A-1 emulsion was the best collector for the uranium minerals, and, in the uranium flotation step, an acid pH in the slurry was found to be necessary. The reagent costs were estimated to be 22 to 26 cents per ton of ore.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the feasibility of joining refractory metal compounds to each other and to oxide ceramics by a vacuum hot press-diffusion bonding method. Very satisfactory joins were made of ZrC to ZrB2, ZrN to ZrB2, ZrC to ZrN, and of ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 to Al203. Each of these join assemblies contained a mixture layer comprising 50 weight-percent each of the two end compounds. The mixture layer, sandwiched between each end compound, enhanced bonding and smoothed out the thermal expansion gradient between the two end members. Strength and thermal shock tests showed that the join areas of the ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 joins were stronger and more shock resistant than the parent materials. Also included in the joining tests was one each of TiC to TiB2, TiC to TiN, TiB2 to TIN, and TiC to ZrB2 joins. Each of these was well bonded, showing that the vacuum-hot-press method can be used for a variety of systems.

1967 will be remembered as the year the world realized it was running out of silver. In May of this year a new era in tin the history of the white metal was begun as the power of the U.S. Treasury to regulate world .silver markets was staggered by one of the most intense speculative flurries in recent times. In the past few months the price of silver has risen from $1, 29 to over $1.80 per troy ounce and with it have spiraled the prices of a host of silver-bearing consumer items. Legislation has, been enacted to conserve our coinage and meager silver stocks and today large quantities of non-existent silver are trading hands at a fast pace on the commodity exchanges throughout the world. Now that the price of silver has been set loose, forces are in motion to dull the world's appetite for silver. At the same time there is strong incentive to provide greater quantities of silver to satisfy the world's hunger' for the metal.

Since prehistoric times, gold has been sought for its beauty and its unusual physical and chemical properties. Early in the dawn of civilization it became the ultimate unit of value, and for at least 6000 years it has been used to barter for other commodities. It has been prospected for, treasured and made into works of art and personal adornment. From time to time, it has even been the object of conquest. Because of its predominant role as a basis for money in recent centuries, economists have come to think of gold solely in these terms. Gold, however, has physical and chemical properties that make it one of the most useful metals in the modern world. It is the most ductile metal known. An ounce of it can be drawn into a continuous wire over 35 miles long. It is also so malleable that an ounce of it can be beaten into films 0.00001 in. thick covering 68 sq ft of surface. It has a density of 19.3 and is so heavy that 1 cu ft of it weighs more than half a ton. Gold is nonmagnetic and has a high electric conductivity that is only slightly less than that of silver and copper. Gold is so inert to all the chemicals found in nature that gold coins and jewelry buried beneath the soil or at the bottom of the sea for thousands of years appear to be as bright and perfect as when they were first immersed. Finally, gold has an extremely high reflectivity of both light and infrared rays.

Five attended the Diamond Jubilee Convention as guests of the Institute at the June 83rd Regular Meeting held in Snowmass Village. Colorado. Each received a recognition plaque and $500.00 to be used toward tuition in his junior year beginning September, 1987. Keith McGinnis. Scholarship Chairman, personally interviewed candidates at three of six colleges and universities in the program. As this is a continuing award the winners this year and those from last year will receive an additional $500.00credit toward tuition if they maintain a satisfactory academic average and are again recommended by their colleges or universities. Por tal motivo, el presente texto señala los datos obtenidos con la preparación de barrenos y la economía obtenida con este sistema. La preparación de barrenos consiste en un corte de la cabeza del barreno a través del un previo calentamiento, para luego ser derivado en una nueva cabeza, de manera que la superficie plana tenga una conexión del conducto de agua y que la forma requerida para la cabeza de este barreno sea en forma de Chaflán, a través de la barra de soldadura. Una vez conectado el conducto de agua, se cortan los rebarbados del barreno en los extremos del canal para la pastilla, obteniendo el ángulo exacto del barreno para la perforación. Finalmente, el canal para la pastilla es limado y cubierto con soldadura, colocando la pastilla en la soldadura y revistiéndola nuevamente para ser fijada en el barreno. The cases of no auxiliary ventilation and ventilation with tubing were mathematically modeled, using a turbulent dispersion model. The scooptram that is used to load is modeled as a variable-speed, variable-strength source of pollutants moving in and out of the dead-ended drift. Model predictions are compared to experimental measurements. A parametric analysis was performed to determine the effect of exhaust pipe location and time spent out of the drift, as well as to determine if a relationship existed between CO2 and NO levels. It was concluded from this analysis that when modeling a load-haul-dump cycle, it is necessary to use a model that has the capability of predicting changes in source strength as well as source location. It was also determined that four relevant factors include effective heading height, apparent longitudinal diffusion coefficient, transverse concentration gradient at the face, and average dispersion width of the exhaust jet. As these factors change with heading geometry and ventilation configuration, they were determined experimentally, Carbon dioxide was used as a tracer to calibrate the model; since, knowing the fuel flow rate, it is possible to calculate CO2 production. The above four factors in the computer model were calculated using a regression analysis, comparing predicted local concentrations to measured local concentrations. The model was then verified after this calibration process using additional experimental results. With the calibrated model, it is possible to predict pollutant concentrations at any location in the heading using an engine map and the previously calculated flow field. A parametric analysis shows that the exhaust pipe location can have a significant impact on operator exposure to exhaust gases. It was also shown that NO concentration varies directly with C02 levels. Predictions using the dynamic model are contrasted with constant source strength (pollutant flow rate) results. An analysis of these predictions for computing time-weighted average NO shows the dynamic model predictions of operator exposure to this pollutant to be less than one-half of the value predicted using a constant source model.

Significant strides were made in the year 1948 leading to further recognition of the place of magnesium as a common commercial metal, rather than as just a premium aircraft material. One of the factors contributing to this recognition was the price stability and, in many cases, price reduction of magnesium products in 1948. In contrast to most other metals, manufacturing advances in magnesium outweighed the effects of increased labor and other costs. At the present time, many magnesium extrusions, die castings, and permanent mold castings can be purchased as cheaply as their aluminum counterparts in these forums, though competitive prices for sheet still await the inauguration of a modern tandem rolling mill for magnesium, such as has already been demonstrated.

Batch biosorption experiments were carried out for the bio-remediation of Cr (VI) ions from aqueous solutions using Serratia marcescens, a Gram negative, heterotroph and Gram positive bacterial isolates from a chromite mine. The influence of various experimental parameters such as contact time, pH, concentration of Cr (VI) ions and amount of biomass was evaluated with respect to the uptake of Cr (VI). The bio-sorption of Cr (VI) was found to be quite rapid and the percentage biosortion was found to increase with increase in the equilibrium chromium concentration. The free energy of biosorption of Cr (VI) was estimated to be in the range of -23 to -25 kJ/mol for the chosen bacteria. The uptake of chromium by the bacteria was confirmed by EDX and FTIR spectroscopy. As a follow up of this study, bacterial strains resistant to hexavalent chromium were isolated from a chromite mine in Karnataka, India and identified as Arthrobacter sp., Micrococcus sp. and Exiguobacterium sp. using 16s rRNA sequencing. The efficacy of the bacterial isolates for Cr (VI) uptake was assessed and over 90% bioremoval could be achieved for Serratia marcescens and Micrococcus sp. isolate. Dolomite-fluxed pellets of various compositions were made from magnetite concentrate, hematite concentrate and a concentrate containing a natural mixture of both. Physical properties and reduction test results were used to ascertain proper compositions and firing temperatures. These pellets were subjected to physical tests and to reduction tests. Petrographic and electron microprobe examinations were made to evaluate the effect of composition and fining on the phase assemblage. We interpreted our test results in terms of chemistry and microstructure and related these to properties. This approach enabled w to determine the composition best suited to each of the three concentrates. Compared with acid pellets, dolomite- fluxed pellets of the optimum compositions had similar physical properties but swelled less, softened at a higher temperature, and reduced faster and more completely.

THE Caletones copper smelter of the Braden Copper Co. is in the " Teniente" mining district about SO km. (49.7 mi.) southeast of Santiago, Chile. From the seaports of San Antonio and Tralparaiso, the property is reached via the Chilean State Railway (66-in. gage) to Rancagua, whence the Braden railroad (30-in. gage) leads to the smelting plant at Caletones, 60 km. away at 5100 ft. elevation, and continues on to the mine and concentrator at Sewell, at 7000 ft. elevation, 12 km. farther into the Andes. The smelting plant was completed and put into commission in February, 1922. At the start, it smelted daily 750 tons of concentrates produced at Sewell from 10,000 tons of ore; later, its capacity was increased to 900 tons of concentrates from 12,000 tons of ore per day; and it is now being increased to 1100 tons of concentrates from 15,000 tons of ore per day. "This paper proposes a new direction to implement an underground mine communication system. It presents actual underground communication systems and discusses their technological limits. A new system based on a wireless local area network (WLAN), together with its main systems characteristics, is then proposed. This paper also presents an experimental protocol for radio frequency propagation measurements. Finally, the paper describes the projected implementation of a WLAN in an experimental mine. IntroductionDuring the last decade, a number of Canadian mining companies have invested in modern communications systems in order to automate processes and reduce operational costs. Safety of miners is also a concern, regulated by health and safety regimes.Underground communication systems rely mainly on analog technology (especially the leaky feeder). Digital upgrades have been made to modernize this technology using a coaxial or fibre optic cable to transmit voice, documents, commands, controls, and video. Therefore, all wired equipment can benefit from an increase in efficiency from the digital technology.However, when it comes to mobile equipment, the only medium was, and is, still radio waves. With the advent of the wireless local area network (WLAN) standard, one can use a technology similar to that of the cellular phone to connect transparently different equipment. WLAN enables the transmission at rates higher than 2 M bits of voice, documents, commands, controls, identification, and of course, digital video. This technology was developed with inbuilding use in mind. Now, one can try to adapt it to underground mines."

Black Rock Cave (BRC) is a sublevel cave which was developed in 2018–2020 and has been in production since November 2020. BRC is part of the Mount Isa Mines complex and extracts a leached orebody comprising of high-grade chalcocite ore, situated below the historic Black Rock Open Cut workings. The mine is owned by Mount Isa Mines and operated under contract with PYBAR Mining Services. In 2021 a number of rockfalls occurred throughout the mine and were increasing in frequency. This culminated in a major rockfall on the decline in June 2021, after which the decision was made to withdraw all persons from the mine, initiate rehabilitation and conduct further investigations to deduce a safe method to provide long-term support. The rockfall investigations have shown that the corrosive nature of the highly leached rock mass can consume a split set in less than 18 months. A review of potential corrosion resistant ground support methods concluded that steel split sets have a safe lifespan of six months at BRC, and that all workings must have corrosion resistant support installed prior to exceeding the safe life of the friction bolts. The review recommended the use of 4 m cable bolts as the most suitable method of corrosion resistant support. This new support system, and the requirement to rehabilitate all mine workings within the leached orebody, had an impact to the schedule and an effect on both equipment and manning levels at BRC. Accelerated jumbo rehab allowed access to the production levels within two months of the rockfall. Cable bolting then followed the jumbo bolting in all leached areas. The direct impact has been ten months of reduced production, due to night shift closures of the decline to enable cable bolting. The impact to the mine has been minimised by the small flexible team that enabled the mine plan to change rapidly and often to accommodate the challenging conditions. In less than two months from the rockfall event, production had resumed. Within ten months of concluding that the mine required; full rehabilitation, a new support system and a full re-schedule, normal mining operations had restarted, with pre-event productions rates being achieved.

Serious exploration for carbonate-hosted lead/zinc deposits in the Pillara district commenced in 1971 when Trend Exploration acquired exploration tenements covering stream sediment anomalies in the Limestone Billy Hills area. Shell Minerals managed the project from 1974 to 1976, and BHP Minerals Limited assumed management during 1976. Carbonate-hosted 'Mississippi-Valley- type' Pb-Zn deposits most commonly occur in Palaeozoic shallow marine carbonate complexes. At Pillara upper Devonian (Givetian/Frasnian) reef complexes are preserved on the flanks of Precambrian basement 'highs'. Within platform and atoll facies limestones sphalerite-galena- marcasite-calcite mineralisation occurs as disseminations, veins and breccia matrix, mostly associated with fractures and fault zones. Early exploration concentrated on detailed surface geochemistry and IP geophysical surveys, with geological mapping and shallow target percussion and diamond drilling. Results were discouraging and did not indicate potential for a shallow base metal resource. During 1976-77 BHP adopted a grid diamond drilling exploration technique and commenced testing an area of approximately 50 sq. km, initially using an 800 m square grid. In 1978 high grade mineralisation was intersected in an area subsequently named Blendevale. This was in the seventh diamond drill hole in the 800 m grid drilling programme, and to date more than 400 holes have been cored in the Pillara area. Detailed drilling at Blendevale has defined a number of mineralised breccia zones within an area of 2.4 km x 0.5 km, at depths of 100 m to 600 m below surface. The breccia bodies are associated with a series of north-south trending normal fault zones, forming a graben structure.
