"MOST of the mines in the Province of Ontario in Canada are multi-level operations in steeply dipping veins; yet there is an appreciable number whose de-posits are relatively flat-lying, ranging up to 45° inclination.The veins vary in width up to several hundred feet and may or may not be branching systems. The depths of mines range from a few hundred to 8,000 feet, approximately. The primary products of the underground group are asbestos, gold, silver, cobalt, copper, nickel, iron, uranium, talc, fluorspar, gyp-sum and salt.There are a few open-pit mines. The majority are temporary in type because, as the outcrops are removed, mining is continued be-low surface. Primary products of the open pits are copper, nickel, iron, magnesium and nepheline syenite.The industry as a whole employs about 50,000 persons, approximately 60 per •cent of whom have dust-exposure occupations. The definition of a dust-exposure occupation and the requirements for •dealing with same are set forth in The Mining Act of Ontario.Results of extensive and continuing studies on the incidence and progression of silicosis have been reported periodically for years past, in annual reports of the Mines Accident Prevention Association of Ontario and in papers presented at Conferences sponsored by Mcintyre Research Foundation of Toronto, all of which have been published. The information provided therein proves the effectiveness of the means being used to prevent silicosis and allied disorders."

"The application of High Pressure grinding Rolls (HPGR) has been growing in the mining industry for the last 10 to 15 years. The major benefits generally supporting this trend are better energy efficiency, improved grinding capacity, less sensitivity to ore grindability variations and higher metal recovery in downstream processes such as heap leaching and flotation. The HPGR machine comprises a pair of counter-rotating rolls mounted in a sturdy frame. One roll is fixed in the frame, while the other is allowed to float on rails and is positioned using pneumohydraulic springs. The feed material is introduced in the gap between the rolls and is crushed by the mechanism of interparticle breakage. Comminution performance is largely determined by the pressure exerted on the bed of particles by the floating roll hydraulic system. The operating bed pressure depends on the hydraulic system start-up parameters and the loading response of the feed material. The work describes how the coupling of the multi-body dynamic simulation with Discrete Element Method in which particle breakage is described using the particle replacement method, can be effectively used to predict the performance of the HPGR. The model considers important variables as the HPGR rolls geometry and design, the hydraulic spring system start-up parameters and the material loading response, to describe operational key outputs as material throughput, operating gap and roller pressure distribution. The preliminary version of the model has been used to predict the effect of material properties on the operating gap and the load distribution on the surface of the rolls, demonstrating that it can describe qualitatively the HPGR operation, indicating that the model will be a power full tool for the simulation and selection of industrial HPGR units."

Rare earth elements are essential for modern life products and green technologies. Recent supply constraints have boosted the development of rare earth projects after the price peak of 2011. The feasibility of a project depends on the definition of a processing route, which in turn depends primarily on the rare earth mineral, with monazite and bastnaesite representing the two most relevant minerals. Monazite-type ores usually contain high acid consumption impurities, such as iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and phosphates, and may also contain prohibitive levels of radioactive thorium in its composition. This work presents a thermodynamic analysis of a monazite system and discusses the fundamentals of a selective process route for rare earth extraction from monazite ores with high iron content. This process involves sulfation by means of concentrated sulfuric acid and roasting at a high temperature. The route yields high rare earth extraction with low iron and thorium extractions and low acid consumption. Rare earth extractions as high as 80% were achieved, while iron and thorium extractions were lower than 1%, and acid consumption was lower than 0.34 kg of sulfuric acid per kg of ore. The operational window was compared to the one predicted by thermodynamic modeling, with 700 °C representing the optimal roasting temperature

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo estudar a incorporação da massa da poeira de aciaria elétrica (PAE), mediante adição em ferro-gusa (1,78% Si) à temperatura de 1.400 graus Celsius. A PAE é proveniente de uma usina siderúrgica produtora de aços longos. A adição da PAE ao ferro-gusa líquido será sob a forma como recebido, sob a forma de briquetes sem agitação do ferro-gusa líquido e sob a forma de briquetes com agitação do ferro-gusa líquido. Previamente, a PAE foi caracterizada utilizando-se as seguintes técnicas: análise química, análise granulométrica, área de superfície específica, difração de raios-X, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e análise de micro-regiões por EDS. A realização dos experimentos de fusão, em escala de laboratório, ocorreu em um forno vertical tubular com controlador de temperatura. Os experimentos de fusão para avaliar a incorporação da massa de PAE utilizaram cadinhos de grafite. Após o resfriamento, ferro gusa e escória remanescentes no cadinho foram pesados objetivando efetuar um balanço de massa. Um fluxo de gás inerte (argônio) foi mantido no interior do forno durante a realização dos experimentos.

"Mg alloy has a high specific strength, however, their thickness reduction was limited on most parts because of their poor stiffness. Since the modulus of rigidity is an intrinsic property, improvement of modulus of rigidity to the enhancement of stiffness is impossible. Therefore, the modification of shape and structure is available method to enhance the stiffness of real part fabricated by Mg alloy sheet. There are many thin walled parts which are located in outer section of electromagnetic system.Poor stiffness is often shown on wide surface area part with steel sheet, which has also high modulus of rigidity. In these cases, various groove patterns are used to increase the stiffness of part. However, some different methods have to be used when general groove pattern can’t be used. So, we would like to propose some new method to high stiffness on thin walled precision forging of Al or Mg alloys.An effect of proposed method on stiffness enhancement can be confirmed by fabrication of prototypes as well as structure and forming analysis based on FEM."

The Eneabba deposit, located 280 km north of Perth, Western Australia, and 30 km inland (Fig. 1) is one of the most recently developed deposits of mineral sands in the world. The area has been in production since 1974, while the Associated Minerals Consolidated Limited (AMA) operation commenced production in 1976. The CSA Mine is located in Cobar, New South Wales and is operated by Glencore. Large scale underground production started from 1965, with zinc, lead, silver and copper extracted in the past. The current operations focus on copper, with a silver co-product.From 2014 to 2016, Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL) undertook a major capital project to upgrade the primary ventilation system at the CSA Mine. This involved the development of ten raises using full-face raise boring from surface to a depth of 1450 m. The total length of the raises was approximately 2500 m. Geotechnical conditions were identified as a key project risk during the early planning stages of the project. Timely quantification of the geotechnical risks was required to minimise project delays and cost overruns. Geotechnical investigations were planned and conducted for each raise prior to pilot drilling and full-face back reaming.Nine of the ten raises had final wall camera and laser baseline surveys completed following full-face reaming. The surveys were conducted progressively, allowing ongoing back analysis and calibration of geotechnical evaluations as the project advanced.This paper presents the design and planning process of the raise bored excavations. It details the geotechnical investigation work undertaken to mitigate the geotechnical risks and the challenges and learnings from the project including the benefits of close collaboration between the parties involved.CITATION:Sidea, D and Brettell, T M, 2017. "En 1953, se habilita la nueva planta de flotación de cobre en Paragsha, donde el funcionamiento de las soleras tipo Lorain y la producción del mineral pirita lograron buenos resultados. Empero las nuevas condiciones de proceso, limitaron su funcionamiento y costo. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del trabajo se basa en la construcción de una solera de mayor rendimiento y menor costo, modificando su diseño al de una honda contínua. El primer juego de este diseño fue instalado en el molino de cobre Nº 1, sin aún obtener el dato final sobre su rendimiento. Posteriormente se consideró la solera AMSCO, dado que el diseño fue más eficiente y el costo final por tonelada fue menor. Sin embargo, se encontró que el contorno del valle era muy cerrado y las bolas N°4 se alojaban de modo ajustado, formando una solera muy gruesa. En consecuencia, se construyó otro diseño denominada ""Solera de onda abierta contínua"", el cual fue instalado en el molino de cobre N°7, donde la capacidad de molienda es igual de óptima y los costos son menores. Así, se pensó que la solera de una sola honda, es mejor que la de onda contínua puesto que este diseño tiene una sola honda en el centro de cada plancha de la solera. Luego, se diseño un tercer diseño, donde el promedio de vida era mejor. Por ello, de los tres diseños a seleccionar -la solera Lorain con 10 hondas, la solera de una honda con 20 hondas y la solera de honda continua de 30 hondas -, la última demostró ser la más eficiente. De otro lado, se probaron otros diseños de honda contínua con distintas aleaciones como el ""Nihard"", cuyo promedio de vida es entre 14 y15 meses aproximadamente, con el tonelaje actual de aproximadamente 270 000. Concluyendo que la experiencia anterior con solerasNihard en molinos a rodillos de 4 pies de diámetro, el impacto es mayor, obteniéndose en quebrantamiento de soleras a 3/4 grosor, pero que pese a esto, resulta ser superior a cualquier otra solera usada actualmente y en eñ que Paragsha esté 100% con soleras de molinos Nihard, a excepción de las rejillas dada su fragilidad. "

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the relationship between cur-rent load and temperature rises in coal mine trailing cables. Six low-voltage, unshielded, portable power cables were continuously and intermittently loaded with direct current of various magnitudes. Temperature rises within and on the cables were measured with thermocouples, and the data were recorded with a computer. Thermal time constants were calculated, which fixed the periods of the duty-cycle tests. Relationships between average temperature at the conductor-insulation interface and current load were established. The steady-state and intermittent currents that produce a 90° C average conductor-insulation temperature were then determined. Comparisons with Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICE A) steady-state ratings revealed that 10 to 25 pct more current than recommended ICEA ampacities is required to reach rated insulation temperature. Examination of the maximum intermittent temperatures attained showed that autoignition of coal dust and burn injuries to personnel handling the cable would not be concerns if the temperature at the conductor-insulation interface averaged 90° C.

A series of field experiments investigated the perfonnance of fine mesh curtain screens which were used to suppress coal dust in a transport roadway of a New South Wales colliery. Four types of screens were tested under dry and wet conditions. The screen materials consisted of flyscreen and garden "shadecloth" with single and double membranes of both materials. Personal dust samplers coupled to dust cyclones and filtration cassettes were used to collect the respirable and total components of dusts respectively. The procedure used for locating the samplers upstream and downstream of the screen was based on the roadway air velocity profiles. The number and configuration of the water sprays impinging onto these screens had significant influence on the results. The study showed that wet double layered flyscreen is the most effective of the four configurations tested.

In the forging industry, the increasing trend is to use DC cast billets as forging stock to replace extruded stock. However, there is little technical information available in open literature. In order to gain a better understanding of the behaviour of cast stock during deformation, a study was initiated to evaluate the impact of an homogenisation treatment on the billet prior to cold forging. Axisymmetric upsettings of cylindrical samples machined from DC billets were achieved in order to evaluate and compare flow stresses, crack initiation and propagation. Results show a 30% decrease in flow stress after homogenisation. Observations of the deformed samples show major cracking for the as-cast material. Optical microscopy and SEM observations have related the crack initiation to decohesion around ß -AlFeSi particles and subsequent growth along the constituent path. Homogenisation effectively breaks up and transforms the ß phase, present as platelets in the cast product, into smaller spherodised a-AlFeSi particles. This has the effect of preventing crack growth in the forged product. The homogenisation treatment also resulted in the reduction of Mg and Si in solid solution. The softer matrix generated 29% less die wear when compared to the as-cast structure. Based on the results of this study, it is thus recommended to homogenise cast billets prior to cold forging.

The large-scale 8.53m×3.96m (28?×13? F/F) SAG mills was first applied in Donggua Hill Copper Mine which processes 13,000 tons ore per day. The crushing and grinding circuit went into operation in the Donggua Hill plant in October 2004. However, at the beginning, the productivity of grinding only reached 58% of the capacity expected and some indexes of the crushing and milling circuit didn?t meet the requirements. Especially, the total load of the 8.53m×3.96m (28?×13? F/F) SAG mills was up to 34%~41% (25%~30% designed)and some hard rocks with the size of 25~70mm, which can?t be treated as a medium or even would be crushed and make larger ores or steal balls necessary, were seriously accumulated in the SAG mills. Consequently, they occupied the effective mill volume which in turn reduced the efficiency of the SAG mills and increase the energy consumption. In order to solve the problem of accumulation in the SAG mill and increase its productivity, some measures were taken, such as passing more hard pebble through the grate at mill dis-charging end, changing the type of steal balls and so on. And the results showed that these measures functioned well and had good effects, which is that the filling percentage of the SAG mills has been reduced to 26%~29% from 34%~41% with the composition of particle sizes improved a lot and the productivity increased by 77.4% reaching up to 13,380 tons per day.

A remoção do fosfóro através do processo de desfosforação do ferro-gusa tem sido cada vez mais relevante, devido a influência que exerce de forma prejudicial as propriedades do aço e devido a extensão do cenário de escassez de minérios com menor teores de fosfóro. Este trabalho tem como objetivo a avaliação termodinâmica computacional de misturas a base de dolomita e finos de minério utilizadas no processo de desfosforação realizado em panela para o refino do ferro-gusa. Foi utilizado o software Factsage para avaliação termodinâmica, tendo este se mostrado eficaz na determinação da concentração de fósforo de equilíbrio no metal, fases presentes e temperatura de fusão das misturas. Verificou-se uma tendência de maiores valores de eficiência para o processo de desfosforação quando aumenta-se a razão de massa de desfosforante e massa de gusa.
