Pavai-and TeampT JV started working on the project T49A, Sumbar J & K State as part of slope and earth stabilization for ongoing Banihal - Katra Railway Connection Project. This project has several tunnels and bridges with slopes that are protected with various types of protection system such rock bolting, rock anchors, and micro piles. For the main two bridges Bring number 2 and 3 at T49 A location Pavai - TeampT JV has to design and execute the circular group of micro piles (Fig.1) for deep excavation of earth for the purpose of construction of well foundations (CAISSON FOUNDATIONS) for both bridge 2 and 3 piers. In this paper we discuss about the purpose, basic design, detailed design approaches and actual work implementation of micro pile with composite rock bolt applications and permanent rock anchors for slope stabilization works in this project.

Aços inoxidáveis supermartensíticos (AISM) surgiram em meados dos anos 1990, após algumas empresas petroleiras e centros de pesquisa empreenderem projetos para desenvolver aços inoxidáveis com boa resistência mecânica e resistência à corrosão. A força motriz destes projetos foi a procura de aços inoxidáveis alternativos para os aços duplex e superduplex na extração de reservas de petróleo “offshore”, devido a seu alto custo e a problemas de produção naquela época. Os AISM são derivados dos aços martensíticos inoxidáveis convencionais, possuem menor teor de carbono, para permitir melhor soldabilidade e melhorar a resistência à corrosão, adição de níquel para evitar a presencia de ferrita delta (d) e adição de Mo, que também aumenta a resistência à corrosão. Através de ensaios de polarização potenciodinâmica foi avaliada a resistência à corrosão de um AISM 13Cr-5Ni-2Mo, denominado neste trabalho como AIS_2Mo, para três diferentes ambientes, NaCl, NaCl+CO2 e NaCl+H2S (soluções desaeradas). O material foi recebido como chapas laminadas a quente, as quais foram normalizadas a 1.050°C (½ hora/ar) e posteriormente revenidas a 600°C (2 horas/óleo). O melhor desempenho foi observado no eletrólito contendo apenas NaCl, com potencial de pite ao redor de 40 mV (ECS); o ambiente mais agressivo foi a mistura NaCl+H2S, com potencial de pite ao redor de -300mV (ECS), a mistura NaCl+CO2 teve potencial de pite intermediário, com valor 60 mV (ECS) abaixo do eletrólito contendo só NaCl.

O processo de pelotização utiliza o combustível sólido com intuito de gerar energia térmica que será transferida para a pelota de forma a alcançar uma queima uniforme. Na usina de Vargem Grande normalmente o antracito é utilizado como combustível sólido. Com objetivo de testar diferentes fontes de combustível sólido, um teste industrial de com coque breeze substituindo o antracito foi realizado. Como o coque breeze possui menor teor de matéria volátil, cinzas ei maior teor de carbono fixo, o consumo de gás natural no forno pôde ser reduzido. Além disto, o coque breeze apresentou um perfil de combustão mais favorável à qualidade da pelota resultando em ganho nos resultados de compressão. Dessa forma, a viabilidade econômica e operacional da substituição do antracito pelo coque breeze foi positiva.

The productive capacity of natural-gasoline and cycle plants in the United States as of January 1, 1952 was 811,596 barrels per day, an increase of 163,691 barrels per day since the last survey on January 1, 1950. The rate of growth during these 2 years has been 12 percent per year s only slightly below the maximum rate, recorded from 1948-50. This survey, for the first time, presents capacity data on a barrel rather than a gallon basis. Also, for the first time, a break-down of capacity by products has been obtained. The combined LP-gas producing capacity of plants and fractionators equaled 382,790 barrels per day, 47 percent of the total industry capacity tor all products. During January 1952, LP-gas and natural gasoline and other products were each produced at the rate of 76 percent of the January 1 capacity.

This paper describing the mining methods of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The story of mining at Inspiration is of particular interest because, after 127,812,000 tons of low-grade copper ore were successfully mined, the mining method was changed from block caving to open-pit. As the open pit became deeper, many features of the former block-caving operation that were exposed elucidated concepts of the mechanics of caving that previously had been assumed but not observed. The conversion to open-pit mining was accomplished by unique combinations of equipment and the introduction of ingenious engineering and operating practices that have extended the expected life of the mine for many years.

The environmental sustainability is linked back to human sustainability; the sustainability development comprises the environment, society, and economics. This study mainly focused on mining sustainability and its impact on the environment of Pakistan. For measuring the level and environmental mining sustainability nature to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the world’s second largest salt mine “Khewra,” Folchi and Phillips environmental sustainability mathematics (PESM) models are applied. The results indicated that Khewra was deemed to be potentially sustainable for the environment and quality of salt. The results suggest the delicate balance of maintaining sustainability successfully, regarding the mining process in Pakistan which has been affecting the local environment and community so badly. As mining activity moves to remote and less developed locations globally, a holistic approach to mine development is fundamental for achieving a balance between strong financial returns and corporate social responsibility and transparency. Key inter-related fundamentals such as social licence to operate, life-of-mine operational planning, minimising environmental impacts and, most importantly, attractive investment returns for the mining company all contribute to the viability of any new mining project.However, the typical practice in the mining industry is often to treat environmental and social/community aspects as separate compliance issues that are dealt with at minimum cost and disruption to the project and resulting operation. This often results in less than optimum environmental and social outcomes, and presents considerable liabilities at the time of closure when rehabilitation programs continue to require funding when all revenue has ceased.The five capitals model seeks to identify each of the key contributors to sustainable development as financial, manufactured/physical, social, human and natural to formulate a type of triple bottom line approach balancing these often competing project factors. The SUSOP® sustainability risks and opportunities framework, developed by the mining industry, bases its approach on the five capitals model and proposes an approach that breaks down enterprise silos to identify innovative solutions for life-of-mine sustainability. This framework has been developed with the nature of mining projects in mind in order to produce approaches and outcomes relevant throughout the life cycle from the planning phases, through project design and construction into operation and closure.This paper argues the need for a more holistic approach to the development and operation of mining projects, and presents case studies where a holistic approach has been applied, in whole or part, and discusses the lessons learned from these case studies.CITATION:Corder, G D, Keith, A and Dyer, L, 2014. A simulation code called SIMJIG and the user interfaces have been developed using discrete element method (DEM) and the .NET platform respectively for the jigging process. DEM platform is used for tracking of particles in the jigging operation. DEM uses the net force balance on the particles to track the trajectory of the particle. Simulation results are compared with experimental results obtained by jigging of low grade iron ore lumps. Two different iron ore samples one from Chatishgarh and one from Odisha were used for the experimental studies. The Alljig? stratification test rig meant for batch laboratory experimental studies has been used in the present work. The behavior of different sizes of material on jigging has been examined. Later, the particle size behavior during jigging at different layers of the jig bed has been studied. Further stratification profile across the jig bed has also been studied. It was observed that simulation results are matching quite nicely with the experimental results. The SIMJIG simulator developed in the present study could be used for predicting the performance of the jigging operation effectively. Pneumatic flotation cells are high-intensity flotation machines with rapid kinetics, resulting in short residence times. Examples include the Jameson, PneuFlot and ImhoFlot cells. These cells do not use impeller-like mechanical cells. Rather, the air and pulp are mixed in a continuous stream of high fluid velocity through a downcomer or venturi to disperse the air into fine (approximately 0.5 mm) bubbles and maintain particle suspension. Froth wash water is often used to enhance concentrate grade, minimising recovery by entrainment. With the growing application of these types of cells, not only in cleaner stages (their traditional use) but also in pre-flotation and scalping duties, there is a need to predict their performance more accurately for circuit design and optimisation. No widely accepted model for pneumatic flotation cells is available and their metallurgical performance is often scaled up from laboratory and/or pilot plant testing by assuming fixed values for metal recovery, concentrate grade and concentrate percent solids. "Reduction of combustion-emitted greenhouse gases, which are associated with global warming, may be achieved by use of CO2-neutral alternative fuels, such as bio-ethanol. Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) are the main co-products of the com-grain-based ethanol industries. In 2009, the North American production of ethanol from com was about 38 billion liters, which generated approximately 31.5 million tons of DDGS. Samples of DDGS were pyrolysed at temperatures of 600-1000 °C in a two-stage laminar-flow horizontal furnace, and a catalyst system was used to synthesize nanomaterials. This work presents a microstructural characterization of these nanomaterials by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results showed that the nanomaterials produced from pyrolysis of DDGS were in the form of long, entangled, rope-like structures with rugged walls, lengths in the tens of microns, and axially non-uniform diameters in the range of 100-300 nm.IntroductionThe interest in ethanol has increased considerably worldwide due to the necessity of finding renewable and cleaner energy resources [1, 2]. According to the Renewable Fuels Association (RF A), the world ethanol production in 2008 was approximately 65.7 billion liters (17.3 billion gallons), which figure represented a 24% increase in the production over that in the previous year [3]. The major producers of ethanol are the USA and Brazil, which together account for 90% of world production. The main feedstock for ethanol in USA is com grain, whereas sugarcane predominates in Brazil [2-4]."

STATISTICS of injuries in the quarrying and related industries in the United States first became available when the Bureau of Mines collected reports from the operating companies for the calendar year 1911. Since then reports have been collected annually. The present bulletin, covering the calendar year 1952, is the 33d publication containing statistical data on injuries at quarries and related plants, and it is the first to be published since 1944. The last publication was Bulletin 458, Quarry Accidents in the United States during the Calendar Year 1942. The unpublished statistics for 1942-51 may be found in the Appendix of this bulletin. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to collect data on injuries at quarries, but there is no Federal law that compels operators to supply such data, and the reports received from operators are voluntary responses to the Bureau's requests for information. Although the figures presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry, every effort has been exerted to make them so, and the figures given are believed to be thoroughly representative of the hazards to which quarry workers are exposed. Moreover, the figures are com¬parable as between States -which is significant in view of the lack of uniformity among the States as regards classes of plants covered by State laws, classes of injuries covered by State reports, and other factors that tend to make it impracticable or impossible to compare the injury experience of one State with that of another or to comprehend the relative importance of the various causes of injuries in the industry as a whole.

The Buick Concentrator is a highly automated operation which utilizes a process control system for continuous monitoring and control. The process control system development, installation, and application to the concentrator grinding and flotation circuits are presented in this paper. The design and implementation of analog field sensing instrumentation, a continuous on-stream X-ray analyzer, grinding and classfication circuit controls, and a recent digital process control system utilizing a centralized computer are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the project planning and installation of the digital control system including a presentation of future plans for continuing application of computer control.

For a number of years European investigators have used laboratory methods of predicting the probable strength of coke made from coal, and recently several investigators in the United States have reported the use of various tests for this purpose. There is at present no method accepted as standard, however, nor is there even agreement as to the general type of test that should be used. Furthermore, because the details of most of the tests have not been worked out carefully, one investigator can not hope to duplicate the work of another. The extension of coke manufacture to new localities in the United States, and the increasing need for cokes of exceptional qualities made from the most economical mixtures, made it desirable to have some simple laboratory test which will determine whether given coals, alone or blended with other coals, are more satisfactory from the standpoint of coke strenpth- than others of different cost. The work described herein has resulted in the development of a simple laboratory test which, it is believed, can be generally adopted in coal laborat,ories, and which will give concordant results even though performed by different investigators in different laboratories. The general method of predicting whether a coal or a mixture of coals will produce a strong coke, resistant to crushing and shattering, has been to correlate the known strengths of the cokes produced in commercial ovens with some measurable constituent or with some property of the coals, and then to use the relationship so found for forming an estimate of the coking strengths of coals unknown. Several such correlations have utilized the percentages of the various ultimate constituents of coal, such as the oxygen content and the hydrogen-oxygen ratio;(39)§ other correlations have involved the proportion of a, B and r com-pounds, (17,21,30c) or of "oil and solid bitumens."(16,30) Also a relationship has been traced between the coking properties of coal and the rate of change of the resistance offered to the flow of an inert gas by fine particles of the coal while being slowly heated. O sopro de ar quente representa uma parcela significativa da energia do processo de um alto-forno. Os regeneradores são os equipamentos responsáveis pela elevação da temperatura do ar soprado via ventaneiras. O presente trabalho aborda uma diagnose de eficiência energética realizada nos regeneradores do Alto-Forno 3 da Usiminas. Contempla uma avaliação detalhada nos parâmetros de combustão envolvidos, sendo identificados diversos pontos para melhoria da eficiência energética do processo. Assim, foi proposto um plano de trabalho objetivando explorar estas oportunidades. Os resultados obtidos garantiram uma maior estabilidade nos controles operacionais, refletindo numa melhora significativa do consumo de combustíveis e possibilitando uma redução média de 44,1 Mcal/tgusa.

We studied theeffect of anode substrates such as pure lead (Pb), lead antimony (Pb-Sb), and lead-silver (Pb-Ag) on the structural and electrochemical properties of electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD). X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and chemical analyses were used to determine the structural and chemical characteristics of the EMD samples. The charge-discharge profile was studied in 9 M KOH using a galvanostatic charge-discharge unit. In all the substrates the current efficiencies were more than 99% except with Pb-Sb where it was 90%. Results revealed the nature of the substrate strongly affected the morphology of the deposited material which in turn affected the electrochemical properties of the EMD samples. XRD analyses revealed that the nature of the anode did not affect the crystal structure of the deposited EMD and all the samples were predominantly ?-MnO2, which is electrochemically active for energy storage applications. The EMD deposited on lead substrate showed superior discharge capacity of 245 mAhg-1 when compared with other substrates.

This mine is situated at Point Aconi, Cape Breton , Nova Scotia, and is a replacement for the 100-year-old Princess Collie ry. It is a slope mine which is the continuation of a s trip mine operation. There are fives lopes from the surface driven with Dosco Dintheaders - this marks the first time these machines were used in North America. There are four room -and-pillar sections, each equipped with a Lee Norse HH106 continuous miner, a "Top Dog" roof bolter and two Wagner diesel Teletrams. There are also two Eimco 913 diesel LHD's , which are used for clean-up in the mines. This paper describes the mining operations of this 800,000-tpy mine which, in less than a year and a half , has been developed to the stage where four sections are producing coal at the desired rate.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the methods and results of many of the laboratory studies on spontaneous heating of coal published in the last 50 years. It includes a brief description of experimental methods, indices of combustibility, and important contributing factors. Adiabatic calorimetry, isothermal calorimetry, [0], sorption systems, or temperature differential are the most frequently used experimental methods. Indices of combustibility include various heating rates, crossing point temperature, ignition temperature, and CO index. Factors that affect the spontaneous heating of coal include air flow rate, changes in moisture content, particle size, rank, temperature, pyrite content, geological factors, and mining practice. Experimental conditions and results from 20 papers are summarized in an appendix, and the bibliography contains 45 references.

Crown ethers are gaining importance in separation technology specifically for rare earth elements (REE, La to Lu plus Y) and precious metals (Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Rh and Ir) due to their specific binding ability, metal complex stability and high extraction efficiency. The selectivity of crown ethers in extraction of these metals depends on different factors, including the cavity diameter and nature of a donor atom of the crown ether, size and charge of the metal ion, diluents and counter ion. Demand for strategic REE and precious metals are consistently increasing in the world while the separation of these metals is most challenging tasks. In this paper, the use of crown ethers in separation of REE and precious metals, reaction mechanisms and simplified process flowsheets will be elucidated. New reagents with high selectivity for the separation of these metals are further expected to produce high purity metals.

[The legislation in many States against the present method of producing carbon-black by the incomplete combustion of natural gas, and the continually increasing demand for gas for otter purposes, indicates that the supply of carbon-black may Gradually be decreased and that new methods for its production, utilizing a greater parentage of the carbon in the has should be developed. In the course of investigations of the effects on hydrocarbons of high voltage discharges, it was noted that under certain conditions natural gas could be decomposed and that carbon-black could be produced. The effects of several tyres of electrical discharges on natural gas have, accordingly, been studied' in order to find out the fundamental factors underlying the reactions and their possible influence in the recovery of a greater part of the carbon content of natural gas than is now possible. Present commercial plants using natural gas for the manufacture of carbon-black recover from 0.9 to 1.5 pounds of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gala consumed, or less than 5 per cent of the total Gabon in the gas: It should be noted, however, that the, present methods involve heating the gas to incandescense by burning it as a luminous flame, and a considerable part of the gas is thus consumed as a source of hest. If this heat can be supplied from some other source, or if a more efficient method of applying the energy con. tamed in part of the gas, to the decomposition of the rest of it, can be worked out, then a greater yield of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gas care be expected. "Since the first commercial extraction of uranium in the early 1940s, the range of feasible process alternatives has greatly increased. This paper reviews process options to reduce extraction costs, improve efficiencies, effect safer operations, and lessen environmental impacts. Equipment and processes used in the past, in use now, and that could be considered for future use are described.BackgroundTwo billion years ago life on earth consisted solely of single celled creatures of the simplest design (Gould 1989). Incredible as it may seem, uranium fission reactors were operating then also. In what is now western Africa, a series of natural reactors were fueled by rich uranium deposits in contact with underground rivers. Water from the rivers provided the moderator necessary to sustain the nuclear fission chain reaction. These primordial reactors ran down after about 600 000 years (Ontario Hydro 1989).Because it is ubiquitous in the earth's crust, humans have always been in contact with uranium. Mining of uranium, albeit not intentional, is ancient ; uranium minerals were embedded in ore veins mined for metals such as silver and copper.Uranium was discovered in 1789 in Berlin by an apothecary, Martin Heinrich Klaproth, who named the element after the recently discovered planet Uranus. The metallic element uranium, as opposed to its compounds, was extracted in 1841 by the French chemist Eugene-Melchior Peligot. The atomic mass of uranium was calculated to be 120, but the Russian genius Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (famous and welcome everywhere except in Russia, where his liberal politics were detested by the Tsar), found this did not fit into his periodic table, and submitted a value of 240. Mendeleev was close; the exact atomic mass is 238.029.Henri Becquerel's detection of the radioactivity of uranium in 1896excited scientific study of the metal, but virtually no practical use was found for uranium outside of a minimal consumption as a colouring agent for glass and ceramics. Scientific interest intensified in the 19305. In 1933 Leo Szilard patented the concept of the nuclear chain reaction. While walking to work on a fine fall London morning and mulling over the problem of how to release atomic energy, he was stopped by a red light. He stood in thought and conceived the notion of the neutron-activated chain reaction before the light turned green. The patent was filed in 1934, and Szilard assigned it to the British Admiralty in order to keep it secret, in an honourable but ultimately futile effort to prevent the misuse of science (Bronowski 1973)."
