Following closely Marcona Corp.'s announcement of its new Marconaflo process for transporting mineral slurries by ship (see pp. 96-97, Sept. 1969 [ ]), Midland-Ross Corp. (M-R) now heralds its metallized iron pellet process which supplements Oregon Steel Mills1 (Oregon Steel) new Portland, Ore., plant. Harry J. Bolwell, president of M-R describes the company's M-R Pellet as "the most exciting advance in steelmaking in a decade, one which will profoundly affect the industry." In fact, other knowledgeable industry spokesmen believe that with these developments the mini-steel plant era is now here and that this technical development along with the Marconaflo process will revolutionize iron ore shipments and steelmaking. The M-R president predicts that electric furnaces can account for 20% of the annual U.S. steel production by 1975, compared with 14% at the present time because of these developments.

INTRODUCTION After a mining company has discovered a mineral deposit, the problem is then how to mine and process that deposit the best way. The principal problem facing managers or engineers who must decide on mine plant size, equipment selection, and long-range scheduling is how one can optimize a property not only in terms of efficiency but also as to project duration. Mine opti¬mization is dependent upon the interaction of con¬tributing parameters which leads to maximizing the net present value (NPV) Realistic mine planning is the key, to the analysis. The process is to be used when evaluating undeveloped properties or when a complete revamping of existing facilities is scheduled The proc¬ess is not intended for detailed mine design but rather for property evaluation and feasibility studies. The derivation of the various input parameters will only be discussed to the point where a meaningful correlation can be made with the overall analysis. The interrelationship of the parameters will be the central point because most company guidelines and financial analysts have their own standards when deriving the various inputs. Assume that the data is totally acceptable and pro¬vides at least the following categories of information and guidelines- (1) mineral and waste inventory; (2) geologic, hydrologic, and geotechnical criteria; (3) topographic layout including property boundaries; (4) metallurgical flowsheet, recovery and design criteria; (5) access, water, power, and environmental base-line study; and (6) financial constraints (minimum rate of return, payback period, etc).

A geração de resíduos sólidos tem se convertido em um problema para a sociedade. Milhões de toneladas de resíduos sólidos são produzidos diariamente no mundo causando numerosos problemas ambientais e sociais. Além disso, o acelerado consumo junto com o avanço tecnológico e o curto ciclo de vida dos produtos têm elevado a quantidade e complexidade dos resíduos sólidos descartados, tornando a situação ainda mais complicada. Nas últimas duas décadas, a indústria de equipamentos eletroeletrônicos (EEE) tem acelerado sua produção vertiginosamente, tendo como resultado o subsequente aumento na geração de resíduos de equipamentos eletroeletrônicos (REEE). Os REEE apresentam na sua composição materiais tóxicos e se descartados irregularmente, podem contaminar o meio ambiente e causar danos à saúde publica. Por outro lado, a sua reciclagem é um assunto que merece atenção especial, não só do ponto de vista de tratamento de resíduos, mas também do ponto de vista econômico. A fim de contribuir com a reciclagem e a diminuição dos resíduos sólidos, o presente trabalho pretende apresentar um estudo do processamento mecânico das placas mães de computadores descartados, visando recuperar o cobre, o níquel e o zinco presentes no resíduo.

The manganese removal from aqueous solution containing high Mn2+ concentration by adsorption and oxidation was studied using manganese oxide particles as the adsorbent. The operating parameters including pH, flow rate, initial manganese concentrations, and oxidant dosage affect the performance of Mn2+ removal were evaluated in a laboratory packed column. In the multi-column adsorption tests, each additional column doubled the time for complete manganese removal. No further decrease of pH was also observed once it was lowered to pH 4.5 to 5. This finding implied the possibility of complete high manganese removal without further pH adjustment during adsorption. Oxidation of Mn2+ by dissolved oxygen was found to be insignificant for manganese removal for high Mn2+ concentration. Adsorption was the predominated mechanism involved with manganese removal. Extremely low H+/Mn2+ stoichiometry compared to the reported values was measured. These low values suggested that different adsorption mechanisms such as chemisorption other than H+/Mn2+ ion exchange might play an important role at low pH. This paper presents the quantity and explanation of the results obtained for the mechanism of adsorption and oxidation of high concentration manganese on the manganese ore particles.

The mining and use of coal creates a significant amount of waste material that needs to be safely disposed of. It is likely that in the medium term, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the U.S. will categorize all such products as a new category – special waste. This would make the materials subject to many of the requirements for handling toxic waste, which will complicate the disposal of such products and significantly increase the disposal costs. Underground disposal would, therefore, seem to be the obvious solution, especially if the placed material can have low or no permeability, so that water table pollution does not present a serious long-term issue after placement. Significant additional advantages could be derived from this backfilling, including the reduction or elimination of surface subsidence, increased extraction, reduced surface waste disposal footprint and the elimination of explosion-proof seals in worked out areas. The research using a specific coal waste product as a typical example proved that the method of placing the backfill at a high density with low permeability is technically viable, but it must be made more cost effective and the other potential benefits quantified and costed in order to present a true comparison.

A fast high-temperature carburizing process integrated with materials design and optimization via a systems design approach was developed to significantly reduce process cycle time. Process experiments were focused on boost cycles to obtain a robust boost process and investigate surface reaction kinetics, primary carbide formation and dissolution. Weight gain and microhardness were measured, all showing evidence of non-monotonic time evolution for longer boost times at higher temperatures. Optical and electron microscopy and other techniques have been used to identify possible carbides, their location and types. These results assist the picking of first boost time with least variation rate in terms of content of case carbon and carbides, dissolvable in subsequent diffuse if any. The results also provide critical information to properly formulate surface reaction kinetics and diffusion and formation kinetics of carbides modeled using DICTRA. The principal foreign mints are: the Royal Mint, London; and the mints in Paris, Brussels, Utrecht, Berlin, Vienna, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Madrid, Milan, Rome, and Constantinople. My time only permitted my visiting a few of the principal and largest given in the list, and for a description of the remainder I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. James M. Napier, who in company with the deputy master, and chemist of the Royal Mint, made a complete inspection of all the European Mints in 1870.

The mining law of British North Borneo is entitled " The Mining Ordinance , 1927. 113 The only mining regulation or rule available is " Rules 313 , 114 passed in accordance with article 26 of the ordinance of 1927. Before the passage of this legislation , the country had no specific law governing the granting of mineral rights , although the land law contained provisions relating to mining lands . The land ordinance of 19135 still controls in a few details . All references in this paper , unless otherwise specifically designated , are to the mining ordinance .

Because State and Federal agencies have limited the amount of sulfur oxides that can be discharged to the atmosphere, most copper smelters plan to convert the S02 in offgases to sulfuric acid. In some cases, however, it might be preferable to use a nonsmelting method to fix the sulfur in the form of a discardable product. Research by the Federal Bureau of Mines has shown that sulfur in copper concentrate can be converted into insoluble anhydrite (CaS04) by roasting the concentrate with lime (CaO). After leaching the calcine to recover metal values, the residue may be discarded without harm to the environment. The process can use a rougher flotation product, thus reducing separation costs and saving valuable minerals (for example, molybdenite) that are now lost in making cleaner concentrate. In tests, rougher concentrate was pelletized with the theoretical amount of lime and roasted for 1 hour in a 6-1/2-inch-ID by 11-foot-long rotary kiln at 700° C. Sulfur retention was about 97 percent. Leaching the calcine with 20 percent RCI extracted approximately 99 percent of the copper, 73 percent of the iron, and 91 percent of the molybdenum. After the molybdenum was removed from the leach solution by adsorption on activated carbon, copper with a purity in excess of 99 percent was obtained by cementation on sponge iron. The strip solution then could be spray-roasted at 500° C to recover the RCI for recycle and obtain F2O3 as a byproduct.

Fine-sized mineral wastes discarded by ore milling plants require stabilization to prevent air and water pollution. Stabilization has been attained by physical, chemical, vegetative, and combination procedures. Vegetative reclamation is preferred to physical and chemical stabilization but is diffi¬cult to achieve because the wastes are sterile, contain deleterious inorganic salts, and lack the essential nutrients and physical characteristics required for sustaining vegetative growth. Methods now have been developed for attain¬ing vegetative growth on all but excessively acidic, basic, or saline tailings at costs ranging from $120 to $650 per acre. The cost for stabilizing tail¬ings requiring more intensive treatment techniques may range upward to $1,750 per acre. This report summarizes procedures developed by the Bureau of Mines and industry for vegetating amenable tailings, lists costs for the various processes, and suggests procedures that may be applicable for stabilizing saline and pyrite-containing tailings. Ridged planting beds, drip irrigation, and deep-furrow planting techniques are suggested for stabilizing saline wastes. A combination of mill tailings and sewage sludge can be used for pro¬ducing synthetic soils, and layers of sewage sludge buried under a layer of tailings offer promise of inhibiting acid formation from oxidation of sulfides in mineral wastes.

"Percussion drills are the source of the most serious noise problems in mining activities, due to their extremely high noise levels(114-122 dB(A)) and widespread use(Bartholomae and Stein, 1988). Percussion drills will continue to be widely used to drill small diameter holes in hard rock because no other method seems to be economically avail-able to replace them (Boillat et al., 1993).Many studies (Danière, 1991; Hawkes etal., 1977a; Jensen and Visnapuu, 1972;Leblond et al., 1976; Milette, 1989) were con-ducted to determine the major noise sources of percussion drills. The exhaust air of pneumatic drills, the hammer, the bit in contact with the rock and the drill rod have been identified as the major noise sources. A muffer can be used to reduce the exhaust noise and the hammer can be enclosed. The bit noise is considered to be of concern only at the beginning of holes. When all the available methods are used to reduce the noise of a percussion drill, the drill rod vibrations become the dominant noise source (Hawkes and Burks, 1979). However, the noise levels generated by this source remain high and future efforts should concentrate on reducing its radiation.Works by Hawkes and Burks (1979) and Hawkes et al. (1977b) for the U.S. Bureau of Mines provide the most complete description on the noise and vibration of percussion drill rods.The longitudinal and bending waves are the two most important types of elastic waves generated in drill rods. Among these, only the longitudinal waves contribute to the drilling rate. The bending waves are caused by non-centralized impacts, drill rod curvature and non-uniform bit/rock interface. Drill rod noise is generated by Poisson’s ratio expansions and contractions of the rod as the longitudinal waves travel up and down it and by transverse rod motions induced by bending waves. The radiation efficiency is much higher for bending waves than for longitudinal waves. Most of the impact energy is transformed into longitudinal waves, as expected for axial impacts. The evaluation of the relative contribution of longitudinal and bending waves to noise generation poses a very difficult problem for experimental, analytical and numerical approaches. It is, however, an important issue because the relative contribution of these two waves will guide future noise reduction efforts. It seems that very little can be done to reduce the noise radiation of the axial waves without affecting the drilling rate. The main difficulty that analytical and numerical approach-es face, in the evaluation of the relative contribution of the two waves, is that there is no adequate theory for predicting the bending vibrations from the factors that cause them. The experimental approach has, thus, been limited to test fixtures that do not adequately represent the boundary conditions, as well as by measurements obtained under real operating conditions from which it is difficult to establish the relative contribution of the two types of waves. For example, Hawkes and Burks (1979) and Hawkes et al. (1977b) used a test fixture with free-free boundary conditions and made no clear link with measurement under real operating conditions. Rather, they have based their discussion on a simple model. Many authors assume that fexural waves are the main noise source on drill rods. However, measurements have been somewhat contradictory and researchers are still unable to state with certainty that this is indeed the case (Lednik et al., 1988)."

As part of a program for improving, the safety of permissible explosives, the Federal Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation to establish the ability of sodium chloride to reduce the incendivity of permissible explosives to firedamp atmospheres. A motivating influence for this investigation has been the comparatively extensive experience of British and other European investigators, who used sodium chloride as a component of their permitted explosives (1, 5, 6 7).5/ In the United States research and development work of this type has been less extensive, although sodium chloride has been added to permissible explosives as a cooling agent (9) for many years. The results of the first phase of this investigation were presented in a previous paper (8), which established that adding up to 10 percent sodium chloride to permissible explosives reduces the likelihood of ignition of firedamp in the gallery test; however, the results were somewhat inconsistent, and the conclusions were qualified. Accordingly, the investigation was continued with a study of the effect of added sodium chloride as a function of the quantity added and of the particle size of the salt.

A hvab coal was carbonized in a closed system at 600 ° C and 40 to 1 , 200 psig to produce a high- Btu gas and char . By retaining the volatiles within the system, it was possible to virtually eliminate production of tars and oils . Depending on pressure and residence time , yields of combustible gases (72 to 92 percent methane ) amounted to 4,000 to 6,000 cubic feet per ton of maf coal and gross heating values of these gases varied from 830 to 960 Btu per cubic foot . Yields of char (maf ) were about 1,600 pounds per ton of maf coal . Increased residence time favored production of gases but reduced their heating values , whereas increase in pressure resulted in somewhat higher heating values and lower production . Similar effects were observed from the carbonization of a low- temperature tar . If these results could be translated to an economical carbonization process for producing high- Btu gas from coal , the demand for coal could be expanded by 40 to 50 million tons per year . Because of large yields of char , a process of this type would obviously have to be integrated with coal - fired power plants . Fortunately , operations could be conducted at essentially atmospheric pressure as product gas under this condition can be obtained in satisfactory yields and with good quality .

A small scale continuous flotation cell was designed and constructed at Noranda Technology Centre to develop a mobile testing flotation circuit located next to the production circuit. This mobile small scale flotation pilot plant can easily and economically be set up at any circuit in a mill and used to evaluate and predict plant performance against a given flotation condition. The main feature of the cell, beside the provisions of automatic pulp level and feed rate control, is to provide a reduced surface to volume ratio approaching to that of an industrial machine. This paper describes the basic design and the results of various testwork carried out to date including aeration, conditioning, reagents, recirculation, flotation gas, etc. are presented in comparison with the plant production results.

"INTRODUCTIONMultiple-seam mining is an ever growing concern for engineers and mine management in every portion of the mining industry and is especially true for coal mining operations. The goal of this report is to identify the location and severity of multiple-seam interactions, provide AMSS calculations performed on the worst of these locations, and follow up with a visual examination of the underground physical effects on the roof and ribs in the locations identified for analysis. Multiple-seam mining is increasingly being studied because:1. Multiple-seam mining can create a multitude of problems such as roof falls, pillar crushing, pillar failing, rib spalling, floor heave, and inundation of water, gas, or oxygen-deficient air that can disrupt mining operations and threaten the safety of the miners.2. Multiple-seam mining is becoming more prevalent due to the depletion of virgin coal reserves.Currently, coal mining in the United States has progressed to the point that a growing number of mining companies are operating in coal seams located above, below, and/or adjacent to previously mined out coal seams. As a result, the state and federal governments are enacting higher safety standards on mining operations. For example, in years past, pillars may have been properly designed to handle single seam interactions for a particular mine or mines; however, today, where mining is now being considered above or below a previously mined area, these loading conditions may not be adequate to handle the removal of additional seams above or below the previously mined reserve. Studies from 1981 estimated that two-thirds of the mineable coal reserves in the United States would be impacted by multiple-seam implications. Today, over three decades later, it is obvious that most of the remaining mineable coal reserve will be influenced by previously extracted seams. Thus, thefocus on multiple-seam mining interactions on current and future mining operations. In 2012, underground mining in the United States produced 342,287 thousand short tons of coal. Northern Appalachia accounted for over 30% (103,301 thousand short tons) of this total (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2013). Rosebud Mining Company and Western Allegheny Energy (RMC and WAE) have a combined total of 23 actively producing underground mining operations and at least four new mines under or ready for development. All of these mines are located in coal seams (Upper and Lower Freeport; Upper, Middle, and Lower Kittanning) of northern Appalachia (Pennsylvania and Ohio). Currently, more than half of the RMC and WAE mines are dealing with multiple-seam interactions. Seven mines are undermining previously mined out coal seams, and five mines are overmining previously mined out coal seams. Also, between these companies, five mines have inner-seam sloping possibilities (2 completed, 3 planned), most of which will result in mining over or under previously mined areas."

From 1997-2000. PT INCO undertook the Fourth Line Expansion Project (FLEX) to increase annual production rates from 90-100 to 150 Mlbs Ni/year (68,000 MT Ni/yr). In 2003, PT INCO nickel production underwent a major sustainable step jump that finally exceeded the targeted rate. This paper presents the changes that led to this achievement. The focus of mining changed. Improving Ni grade was important but only if electric furnace feed met target chemistry so that on-specification slag could be produced. The intensity of diamond core drilling for exploration was dramatically upgraded, mine planning strategy was totally re- vamped and an ore chemistry quality assurance team was formed. In the processing plant, measurement systems were upgraded for better control. Teamwork between sections vastly improved. The final step jump in production occurred when the fifth hydro-electric power generator was added to the furnace grid to allow the power-starved furnaces to cruise in operation at 70+ MW. The Cherry Creek tungsten district was explored by the Bureau of Mines from April 16 to August 13, 1942. This district is in north-central White Pine County, Nev., 50 miles north of Ely. Principal work was done on the property of the Cherry Creek Tungsten Mining Co. and at the adjacent Chance mine, although the entire district was examined and mapped. The exploratory work was done in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey and comprised surveying, trenching, sampling, long-hole and core drilling, rehabilitation of mine workings, road building, drifting, and shaft sinking. The more important tungsten occurrences were explored by trenching and diamond drilling. Sixteen holes, having a total length of 2,515 feet, were drilled. The project resulted in partial development of three new tungsten deposits and small increases in the reserve tonnage of two scheelite-bearing lenses that were being mined by the company. The following pages summarize the history of the district, outline the ownership of the properties explored, and describe the physical features and mineral deposits. Mining and milling practices at the Cherry Creek tungsten mine are outlined, and the plan and results of project work are presented in detail together with surface maps, assay maps, and drill-hole logs.

ABSTRACT Sooner or later, every producing mine faces the question of fill. This paper invites consideration of mill tailings as an economical, efficient, and quantitatively adequate source of such fill. Some of the advantages, disadvantages, methods of utilization, and methods of treating mill tailings for sand recovery are covered. Table I, reproduced from U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 60, is offered as evidence of the adequacy of hydraulically placed sand. Table II gives the results of tests made in an effort to determine the reason for the difference between load hearing qualities of dry-placed and hydraulically-placed sand. From these, it would appear that hydraulic placing gives a denser initial packing, with corresponding higher, and faster development of, load bearing qualities. Assuming this to be true, then if sand from mill tailings can be placed underground economically, it is the superior fill material. Table III summarizes cost data available. The most cursory glance through the available references (2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) will show .that the major benefit from the adoption of sand fill is a decrease in the non-productive fill ?cycle of a working place. This, it is estimated, increases the output of an individual stope by from 25 to 50 per cent. The advantage of reducing the number of required working places for a constant daily production is obvious.
