This paper describing the operations of the Cresson mine of the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Co. at Cripple Creek, Colorado, is one of a series of papers on mining methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Cresson has recently been the most, important mine in the Cripple Creed district. During 1932 and 1933 an average of 230 tons of new ore (excluding dump material) that averaged about $10 in gold was shipped daily; 150 to 175 men were employed. Stoping was by the shrinkage method exclusively. The ore was screened washed, and hand-sorted at the surface and shipped to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs for treatment. A considerable proportion of the production was made by lessees working under the so-called "split-check" system. Oil, coal, and gas account for approximately 80% of global primary energy, but only a portion of total airborne CO2 eq (approx. 35% at GWP20 to 65% at GWP100), even though they account for 95% of total measured CO2 emissions. The benefits of these energy sources, as well as their related costs, are not all incorporated in current energy policy discussions. Global greenhouse gas policies must include documented changes in measured airborne CO2 eq to avoid spending large amounts of public funds on ineffective or sub-optimal policies. The authors examined airborne CO2, which is less than half of emitted CO2, as well as reported CH4 emissions and the global warming potential of CH4 as published by the IPCC for coal and natural gas. The surprising conclusion is that surfaced-mined coal appears ‘better for the climate’ than the average natural gas, and all coal appears beneficial over LNG. Therefore, current CO2-only reduction policies and CO2 taxes are leading to unintended consequences and the switch from coal to natural gas, especially LNG, will not have the desired impact of reducing predicted future global warming; in fact, quite the contrary. A large portion of anthropogenic global warming is attributed by the IPCC and IEA to CH4, but it must be noted that CH4 emissions from natural sources and from agriculture account for approximately 40% and 25% of annual global CH4 emissions respectively. Energy accounts for about 20% of documented CH4 emissions. CO2 contributes only approximately 35% of annual airborne anthropogenic GHG emissions after accounting for CH4, over a 20-year horizon. At a 100-year horizon, the contribution of CO2 increases to approximately 60%. Energy policies that do not consider all GHG emissions along the entire value chain will lead to undesired economic and environmental distortions. All carbon taxation and CO2 pricing schemes are incorrect and need to be revised. At IPCC’s GWP20 an approximately 2%1 higher loss of CH4 across the value chain prior to combustion of natural gas versus coal will lead to ‘climate parity’ of coal with natural gas. According to public data, natural gas value chains have high CH4 and undocumented CO2 losses. On a global average, using only IEA-documented CH4 data, natural gas emits approximately 15% more CO2 eq than surface-mined coal, over a 20-year horizon. This difference will increase as the use of shale gas and LNG expands. Investors should support all energy systems in a manner that avoids an energy crisis, including intermittent renewable energy systems where they make sense. If CO2 emissions need to be reduced, one of the most effective ways would be to install ultra-supercritical power plants with CCUS technology. However, the undisputed benefits of increased CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere because of its promotion of photosynthesis and plant growth effects (fertilization) need to be considered in energy policy decisions as well. The authors suggest that future research and development should concentrate on reducing net emissions from fossil fuel power plants and providing cost-effective and reliable new conventional power generation capacity, utilizing clean coal and clean natural gas technology.

"An adequate level of R & 0 is crucial to achieve gains in productivity and to strengthen Canada' s position in an increasingly competitive world ." So stated Finance Minister Jean Chretien in his April 10, 1978 budget speech, on announcing a new measure designed to increase the productivity of Canadian industry and to assist in the creation of new technology. The effect of the new measure, which permits an income tax deduction of 150% of certain research and development (R & D ) expenditures , can reduce the after-tax cost of a marginal dollar 's worth of such expenditures to as little as 20 cents . This article discusses the income tax treatment of R& D expenditures in general, and describes in particular the income tax incentives which relate to R& D.

Uma grande quantidade de poeiras e fumos contendo óxidos de ferro, zinco, alumínio, cálcio, chumbo, magnésio e cádmio são habitualmente gerados durante a produção do aço em usinas siderúrgicas semiintegradas. Processos hidrometalúrgicos e pirometalúrgicos têm sido desenvolvidos para o tratamento da poeira de aciaria elétrica (PAE). O processo Waelz, que recupera parte destes resíduos por meio de reações metalúrgicas de redução e oxidação em um forno rotativo, é uma tecnologia de destaque empregada para a recuperação dos metais voláteis, e tem sido a mais usada nos últimos 40 anos. Neste trabalho, foi realizado um estudo termodinâmico do processo Waelz, visando à otimização das condições metalúrgicas necessárias para garantir a recuperação dos metais voláteis (em especial zinco), de forma a assegurar a minimização de impactos ambientais e maximização de opções de processamento para a recuperação do zinco contido. As variáveis cinéticas foram estudadas por meio da execução de uma serie de 6 experimentos, englobando os principais fatores do processamento, tais como: tipo de redutor e tempo/temperatura de processamento. Também foi avaliado o comportamento mecânico das pelotas para cada formulação. Caracterizações por meio de microscopia eletrônica com microanálise via EDS, difração de raios X, fluorescência de raios X, análise granulométrica a laser, resistência à compressão, porcentagem de matéria volátil, carbono fixo e cinzas foram empregados.

THE White Knob copper-deposits are situated about three miles south of Mackay, on the Salmon River .branch of the Oregon Short Line Railroad, in Custer county, Idaho. An outline-map of this district is given in Fig. 1. The deposits have been known and spasmodically worked for many years, and a total of over 3.5 miles of tunnels, shafts and other workings has been driven with a view to their development. These extensive excavations have exposed the deposits sufficiently to permit a careful geological examination. The peculiar features which give special interest to this paper are the branching, free-like form of the ore-bodies; the absence of zones of secondary enrichment in the partly oxidized pyritic deposits, and the fact that while the deposits are associated in a general way with the contact of an eruptive rock with limestone, which it penetrates, the garnetization has taken place not in the limestone, as is the usual case, but in the igneous

The National Granite Commission at its annual meeting in Norfolk, Va., in January, 1930, passed a resolution requesting the Bureau of Mines to conduct an economic study of the granite industry. In compliance with this request a preliminary review has been made of trends, in, the production and uses of block granite. Some unfavorable conditions, were, thus brought to light and certain suggestions regarding a. more orderly and consistent growth in the industry are herein discussed. The results of the study axe, presented in this report for the earnest consideration of the industry and comments are invited, not only on this report but as to future work that might be accomplished by the Bureau of Mines. The authors desire to acknowledge many helpful suggestions and comments from Paul M. Tyler of the Bureau of twines and from Harris F. Sherman, secretary of the National Building Granite Quarries Association. Miss A. T. Coons of the Bureau of Mines rendered valuable, assistance through her wide knowledge of granite statistics.

Magnesium- rich magnesium- aluminum- zirconium alloys in the cast and in the extruded and heat- treated condition were studied to identify the phases present and to determine phase distribution . In cast alloys , two intermetallic compounds were identified : ZrAla by X- ray diffraction ; and Mg₁ Al₁₂ by microscopical observation . Based on microscopical comparisons between the known phases in the cast structures and the phases in the structures of extruded and heat - treated rods , ZrAl₂ and Mg1 , Al12 were identified in the structure of the latter . The presence of these intermetallic compounds in rod specimens could not be confirmed by X- ray diffraction . ZrAl₂ was observed in the structure of extruded and heat - treated rod specimens containing as little as 0.01 weight - percent zirconium . The presence of aluminum restricts the solubility of zirconium in magnesium because of the strong tendency to form ZrAla . This intermetallic compound segregated in clusters of small particles in the matrix of cast alloys , and only slight improvement in distribution was noted when the alloying techniques were varied .

Fibered, portland-cement-based gunite products were applied in the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine using a variety of pneumatic guns and gunning crews, The demonstrated wet-mix (with silica fume), dry-mix, and surface bonding products were sampled by the Bureau and subjected to a suite of engineering analyses. Gunite flexural and compressive strength, rebound, permeability, porosity, dust loading, shooting rate, crew requirements, and cost factors were evaluated. Steel, fiberglass, or polypropylene fibers were contained in all but two of the gunires tested. Both Bureau and private testing laboratory analyses are provided for some products. Electron probe micro-analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed on the silica fume fraction of the wet-mix gunite to characterize the dust. Aggregate size fraction distribution analyses were performed to provide strength relationships. Results indicate that all of the commercially available fibered-gunite materials tested can provide beneficial sealant, spall prevention, or roof stability control attributes for underground mining environments when applied by an experienced crew using a well-maintained gun, in accordance with product manufacturers' recommendations and when used for the designated purpose.

This report discusses processing and use of the principal forms of manganese. The focus is on trends in the United States in the 20th century and specifics of domestic manganese material flows as of about 1990. To protect proprietary data, quantitative assessments are limited to the iron and steel industry, which accounts for about 90% of consumption. Nonmetallurgical uses are considered qualitatively. Approximate disposition of a U.S. cumulative consumption during 1901-90 of an estimated 69 million st of manganese is estimated to be iron and steel slag, 69%; nonmetallurgical uses of a dissipative na¬ture, 10%; iron and steel scrap, 9%; National Defense Stockpile, 3%; unidentified and/or including items in service, 10%. In slag from iron blast furnaces and steelmaking, manganese is present as a minor, relatively im¬mobile component, which so far has been uneconomical to recover. Construction and road building are main applications for these slags. Steel slag contains the greater amount of manganese. Studies by others of global manganese fluxes and the effect of human activities on them also are discussed. One source concludes that the main effect of human activities, via deforestation and agricultural activities, has been to increase the rate of transport of manganese to the oceans.

Floyd County, KY., contains sizable deposits of high volatile bituminous coal. Some of the coals have been blended with higher-rank coals and used in the manufacture of high-quality metallurgical coke. The Upper Elkhorn No. 3, Upper Elkhorn No. 2, and Upper Elkhorn No. 1 beds produce the bulk of the present output in the county and contain the main known reserves of coal. Little information is available concerning the quality and extent of the deposits underlying the Upper Elkhorn No. 1 bed, although small operations in the past have worked a bed that is reported to be; the Lower Elkhorn. Undoubtedly, these lower beds occur in Floyd County, but depth Will preclude their development into a major source of fuel as long as large deposits of more-accessible coal are available. More is known of the occurrence of the beds above the Upper Elkhorn No. 3 owing to sporadic mining ventures in the upper measures. Many of the coal samples from beds above the Upper Elkhown No. 3. were collected in mines that had been abandoned. Almost all of the present production of Floyd County coal is taken from the Upper Elkhorn beds, and it is unlikely that their dominant position as coal producers will be challenged in the near future. Table 1 shows the coal production of the county by beds, during 1950.

All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

"The iron ore of the Scully Mine is upgraded from 36 per cent Fe to 66 per cent Fe through single-stage crushing, wet autogenous milling, sizing by vibrating screens and two-stage spiral separation, followed by a process in which the concentrate is dried and then further improved by high-tension separators. The capacity of the concentrator is 17,000 long tons of concentrate per day. Discussion of the operation will recognize the special problems encountered in handling preponderantly fine ore, relate issues of interest regarding wear and review mechanical innovations found to be advantageous at Wabush. The modern trend toward big equipment, thoroughly instrumented, has been the theme of design. Effects on availability must be a consideration in this choice, and sectionalizing of circuits to minimize these consequences is as important as streamlined maintenance."

Introduction During the past ten years, shaft sinking has been going on continuously at Inco and new shafts and shaft extensions have been sunk under a broad diversity of conditions. The Murray mine and the Stobie section of the Frood-Stobie mine have?been opened and a main hoisting and supply shaft has been sunk at each of these mines; No. 2 shaft at Murray was sunk initially from surface to 1,960 feet and is now being extended; No. 7 shaft at Stobie was sunk from surface to 3,105 feet. No. 2 shaft at Garson has been extended from 2,200 feet to 3,200 feet in depth. At Levack, No. 2 shaft is being extended from 1,860 feet to 2,850 feet for ore hoisting from the 2,650 lev el. At Creighton, No. 6 shaft, collared on 52 level, was sunk 1,740 feet to a total depth of 5,563 feet below surface. It is the deepest Inco working. At Creighton, also, No. 7 shaft is being sunk from surface to the 30 level to handle the ore from caving operations. Ail Inco main hoisting and supply shafts sunk during the past twenty years have been vertical rectangular shafts equipped with two cages and two ore skips. The cages are standard and interchangeable for all shafts except Garson No. 2; they are single-deck, 13 ft. 4 in. by 5 ft. 2 in. inside and are designed to carry a maximum material load of 16,000 lb. The man load is 48 men. Skip capacities at the several shafts vary from 8 to 15 tons. Forty-two hundred feet bas been established as the standard vertical lift, and the permanent hoisting equipment at each shaft is designed for eventual hoisting from that depth.

THE theory of hardening by interference with slip which has been so clearly developed by Jeffries and his co-workers requires that an alloy to be amenable to age or heat hardening should contain among its components some that will stay in solid solution at high temperatures and precipitate as a secondary phase on cooling. This secondary phase may be either a more or less pure individual element (chromium in the case of copper, anti-mony in the case of lead), or some intermetallic com-pound. Those cases of hardening which depend on the precipitation of a compound are not only the most frequent, but are also far superior in the efficiency of hardening obtained. However, the slip interference theory as stated in its most general form is not sufficient to foretell new cases of this type of hardening and also will not explain some phenomena of a more intricate nature. It is not sufficient that a secondary phase might be absorbed by the main one at high temperatures and precipitated at the lower ones. The kinetics of this precipitation and the accompanying. physical phenomena of dimensional changes play independent and highly important parts. These kinetics, while not yet sufficiently studied to he formulated in the shape of physicochemical equations, might find their expression-in a qualitative systema-tization of the phenomena of precipitation according to two different viewpoints. To begin with, we encounter the question as to the velocities of the precipitation and of the growth of the phase precipitated. To harden a metal in an efficient manner we must be able to control the precipitation on one hand and also to bring the total of the secondary phase to such a number and size of the particles pre-cipitated as, will produce a desirable hardening effect under commercially feasible conditions of. age or heat hardening. From this viewpoint six different cases may be dis-cerned.

The aim of this paper is to summarise all known Phanerozoic ooidal ironstone deposits worldwide, including Australian deposits such as the well-known channel iron deposits (CID). Nearly 400 occurrences have been catalogued based on stratigraphy, geographical coordinates, facies, grade, tonnage and iron bearing ore minerals. The description also includes details on the geochemistry, genetic models and main references. Brief statistical analysis provides an overview of the variation between these deposits. This compilation offers a basis for better understanding of the ooidal ironstone deposits and a global evaluation of this important resource worldwide.

ECONOMIC STRUCTURE OF MODERN INDUSTRIAL ECONOMIES The role of minerals in modern industrial economies may be examined in several ways. There are relationships with the various sectors of the economy: the primary, secondary, and tertiary industrial groupings and activities. Mineral supply and demand activities can be measured in terms of national accounts criteria. The economic policy objectives of the modem industrial economy are based to a considerable extent on the needs of the nation for economic supplies of miner- al materials. There is an important role for minerals relative to national security in peace and in wartime and many national policies are directed toward ensuring adequate sup- plies of minerals. Environmental control in the modem industrial economy is increasingly concerned with matters related directly to the production and use of minerals and these matters, in turn, bear importantly on conservation in mineral supply and demand. Mineral polices include specific provision for research and development activities concerned with the production and the use of minerals. In all, national policy objectives will be shaped in considerable part by the circum- stances of mineral supply and demand: the relative degree of availability from domestic and foreign sources, the state of the mineral-processing industries, and the degree of development of the mineral-using industries, and per capita and total changes in requirements. Goods made from mineral raw materials are the basis of all advanced societies and although this is taken for granted, every country is continually dealing with problems of mineral supply and demand. Considering that in the first 50 years of this century the consumption of mineral materials in a highly Industrialized country such as the United States increased by six times while the population was doubling, it becomes apparent that if a country is to enjoy rapid economic growth it must have access to huge and ever-growing supplies of mineral materials at lowest possible cost. Adequate supplies of mineral materials and wise usage of mineral resources have always been among the most important determents of a nation's survival The importance of access to adequate mineral supplies is increasing every year and this has significant international, as well as national, implications because of the unique locational characteristics of mineral resources. It is generally acknowledged that no particular type of natural resource is essential to a high level of national income or to economic progress. A country's endowment of natural resources need not exercise a determining influence on the course of its national income over time, provided it is able to trade. The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, was developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer overflows. With only one contract left before completion of the Phase I tunnels—the 12.4 km(7.7 mi.) long Little Calumet leg—the pollution control phase of the 175.7 km(109.2 mi.) long system will be 93% complete, once the Torrence Avenue tunnel project comes to an end. This paper describes the Torrence Avenue tunnel project, currently under construction by the joint venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Kiewit / Shea. Mining of the10.4 km (34,151 feet) long and 8.3 m (27'-4") diameter mainline tunnel was completed in a record thirty-one-weeks period and the concrete lining is nearing completion. Details on the complete muck handling system, numerous mining and concrete lining records will be given.

"The move to LRFD methods for structural design by AASHTO, ACI, AISC , ASCE, and the FHWA has been a major change for the American construction industry. The deep foundations industry has arguably been placed most at risk by this situation, because of the need for, and the difficulty of providing, reliable quality assurance.LRFD is attractive for both the owner and the engineer because it promises cost reductions, but the assumption underlying LRFD is often overlooked - that the acceptable margin of safety can be rationally reduced, thus saving costs, provided that all the factors involved are closely controlled. This means that both the quality of the materials and the quality of the construction work must be closely monitored, and held to an acceptable standard.This paper describes the type of comprehensive quality management program that is needed in deep foundation construction projects based on LRFD. Case histories are used to illustrate the importance of both adequate inspection and reliable testing to a comprehensive quality management program.IntroductionOver the last thirty years, the major organizations that set standards and practice policies for the American construction industry, such as the American Association of State Highway and Transportation officials (AASHTO), the American Concrete Institute (ACI) , The American Institute for Steel Construction (AISC), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), have embraced Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) as an alternative to, and in some cases, a complete replacement for, Allowable Stress Design (ASD). AASHTO first published a new set of LRFD-based design guidelines for bridges in 1996, with several revisions in 1997, 1998, and 1999 (AASHTO, 1996). The 1996 AASHTO Bridge Design Code was the first in the United States that required foundations to be designed using LRFD procedures. LRFD has a clear advantage over conventional ASD where variability in material strength, bias in design methodology, and degree of construction quality can be rationally accounted for to achieve an acceptable level of risk."
