There are many reasons why the US mineral and primary metals industry is in its present state. Undoubtedly, a flood of imported goods in all sectors is playing a major role in the plight of our raw materials industry. Domestic industry is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of its international competitiveness. And we are beginning to wonder what is happening to our technological edge. A number of factors affect the international competitiveness. Engineers cannot do much about some of these factors - labor costs, tax policy, government relations, interest rates, dollar strength, and labor-management relations. Something can be done about technology, however. Some say technology is so easily transferable today. But I would like to believe that we have the ability to apply it better than others. Not too many years ago, "made in Japan" meant cheap and shoddy products. Today, Japan has completely changed its image. The US is beginning to feel the threat from Japan's low-cost, defect-free products with dependable delivery. With worldwide recession and the strength of the dollar, we were shocked at the sudden weakness that developed in America's industries, not only in the international market, but domestically as well. What went wrong and what can we do about it? Senior executives from 300 large American manufacturing companies were surveyed. These executives believe US companies must: • invest in more efficient plants and equipment (27%); • invest in more research and development (23%); • improve the quality of service to customers (23%); and • adopt more aggressive marketing tactics and strategies (14%). Are we not doing enough research? The US has nearly four times as many people engaged in research and spends four times as much for research as Japan (Fig. 1). There is little doubt about the excellence of the US performance in basic science as indicated by the number of Nobel prize recipients. Japan has produced only four winners since World War II. Look at technology trade of five countries (Fig. 2). Again, US performance has been remarkable. An interesting observation here, is that the United Kingdom, another country with economic woes, is also in the black, West Germany and Japan, both with trade surpluses, are net technology importers. It is apparent that the US' performance in the commercialization of new knowledge is much more in question. Japan had $50 billion of trade surpluses with the US last year, which led to some friction between Washington, DC and Tokyo. Comparing the technology trade of Japan and the US in more detail, Japan imports disproportionately large amounts of technology from the US and Europe. This data is rather old, 1978, but the general trend is not too different even today. It is generally believed that scientific research leads to innovative technology, then to economic payoff. But, after seeing the current technological challenge by Japan, we are forced to change this traditional view. Investment in research may eventually lead to economic payoff, but not directly. There is a middle ground between new knowledge and its commercialization. This is an area where the Japanese have been successful. Until the 1970s, many western companies licensed patents to Japan for quick profits. But, in recent years, these companies have become more discrete about the terms of technological transfer. As a result, a number of scientists and engineers are expressing deep concern over the future of technological developments in Japan. A survey was conducted on 450 research managers of private industries in Japan on how they viewed the level of breakthroughtype original research in Japan as

It is imperative that the hydrogeologic frame- work and the ground water flow systems of a Potential mine area be investigated prior to initiation of mining. Such investigations are necessary so that potential mine water inflow problems can be anticipated and controlled. Obvious difficulties can arise if large inflows of ground water occur in underground workings. Costs of water removal and disposal, if not foreseen and included in economic planning, can severely limit or eliminate profit from a mining operation. Safety problems associated with large inflows are an additional potential problem. The inflow of water into a mine necessarily alters the associated ground water system. The inflow also may impact nearby surface water regimes, depending upon the interaction of the surface water and ground water systems. The inflow of water into a mine inevitably causes a decline in the ground water levels in the vicinity of the mine. This decline may be restricted to a small area or it may extend a considerable distance, depending upon the hydrogeologic properties of the associated hydrostratigraphic units. A decrease in surface flow will result if the area of ground water level decline intersects a stream or spring that is hydraulically connected to the ground water system. Mine inflow problems historically have been evaluated after-the-fact. Premining hydrologic investigations only recently have been initiated. Brown's (1977)* report on anticipated hydrologic impacts of oil shale mining in the Piceance Basin of Colorado is an example of premining hydrologic planning. Observed difficulties inherent in designing a data collection network and then utilizing the data to predict mine inflow have led us to the preparation of this manuscript. This manuscript reflects a two-phase effort. The first phase describes and develops analytical and numerical techniques for mine inflow prediction. Emphasis in this section is placed on the selection and application of data collection techniques and data analysis procedures. The second phase applies the prediction technique(s) developed during phase 1 to two existing mines. The objective of phase 1 efforts is to evaluate the hydrologic variables associated with surface water systems and ground water systems that can affect the inflow of water into an underground mine. Subsequently these variables are incorporated into predictive techniques for estimating underground mine water inflow and its effect on associated ground water and surface water systems. The specific objectives of phases 1 and 2 are to: 1) Determine the hydrologic parameters required for predicting underground mine water in- flow and the potential effects of the inflow on surface and ground water systems. The hydrologic parameters represent both premining and past initiation conditions. 2) Outline methods for obtaining the necessary input data for the predictive techniques in pre- mining and post initiation periods. 3) Present existing numerical techniques for predicting underground mine water inflow including assumptions Ad required input. 4) Evaluate existing numerical techniques previously tabulated based on their applicability to mine water inflow prediction. 5) Attempt to develop analytical techniques for predicting underground mine water inflow. 6) Develop, through modification of existing models, a general mathematical model as a numerical technique for predicting underground mine water inflow and the resultant effects on surface and ground water systems. 7) Apply the predictive techniques to two existing mines selected for this purpose. 8) Compare the predicted inflow rates to measured inflow rates at both mines. 9) Compare predicted impact on district hydrology to observed impacts where possible. 10) Evaluate the predictive technique.

INTRODUCTION Coal gold agglomeration (CGA) is a new concept in gold processing. It involves the recovery of oleophilic (oil-loving) gold grains by causing them to adhere selectively to the surfaces of coal oil agglomerates. Under optimum conditions very high recoveries of gold. can be achieved. The agglomerates are recycled to build up gold loading to typically 1000 - 5000 g/tonne. Bullion can be produced by burning the loaded agglomerates with subsequent recovery of gold from the highly loaded ash either by dissolution/electrowinning or smelting. A wide-ranging programme of laboratory testwork has been performed to investigate the response of different ore types to the process. This has shown CGA to be most applicable to ores in which the gold is liberated or easily liberatable, relatively coarse (ca 500 µm) and fine (<5 µm) gold grains being recoverable with equal ease. The best opportunities for CGA seem to be: • placers containing fine gold not recoverable by gravity concentration • low grade gravity concentrates to avoid multiple magnetic/gravity separation stages and amalgamation • free milling ores where the gold can be liberated at a reasonable ore particle size eg >d80 50 µm • tailings past or present from gravity concentration plants. CGA testwork ranging in scale from laboratory to pilot plant on tailings produced by gravity concentration in the 19th century Australian gold rush has already been reported (Bonney, C F, 1988; House, C I, Townsend, I C and Veal, C J, 1988). An economic appraisal for a Canadian free milling gold ore has also been published (Buckley, S A, House, C I and Townsend, I G, 1989). This paper describes results of a detailed laboratory programme to assess CGA as a means of recovering gold from a beach sand deposit in New Zealand. The area from which the samples were taken consists of quarternary interglacial marine, lagoonal, fluvial and eolian deposits. The heavy minerals present are predominantly ilmenite and garnet and small concentrations of gold. In certain locations the sands and gravels are consolidated by a limonitic cement. In the 19th Century some parts of the deposit were mined and the ore processed using stamp milling and gravity concentration. Gold recoveries were low, probably below 50%, due primarily to the fine size of the gold grains, the flaky nature of the gold and also imperfect liberation by the stamp mills. Our laboratory testwork was divided into three parts: i) Preliminary studies on an initial sample to assess the feasibility of treating the ore by CGA ii) Extended studies on further samples from various locations in the deposit to confirm predictions from (i) iii) Conventional gold recovery techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All CGA tests were performed by agitating a slurry of ore in water in a 0.6 dm3 pyrex beaker fitted with four vertical baffles. When required, potassium amyl xanthate collector was added and the slurry conditioned for 5 min. Coal (ex BP Coal Australia&apos;s Tahmoor Colliery) previously ground to a d80 50 µm was added followed by a commercial grade of gas oil (density 840 kg/m3). The agglomeration time was 30 min. The agglomerates were separated from the tailings by screening, both were then dried and analysed for gold by fire assay. This test procedure provides a reasonably accurate estimate of gold recoveries that might be expected from our 1 tph pilot plant. "INTRODUCTION The design, development, fabrication, and test of cryogenic breathing apparatus is part of a much larger effort funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and managed through a Space Act Agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. This effort is designed to create cryogenically based life support equipment that is responsive to the needs of miners as required by the Miner Act of 2006. Our goal was to design and build a liquid air based self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) that lasted 2 hours and would be used for the egress of miners during a mining accident and be refillable while worn. Therefore, the current report describes tests of an Advanced Cryogenic Breathing Apparatus (termed the ACryoBA) designed to provide miners egressing an emergency situation with a two-hour open-circuit SCBA. The ACryoBA utilizes low pressure cryogenic liquid air instead of high pressure compressed air commonly used in most commercially available SCBA. The ACryoBA can also be self-filled from strategically placed Cryogenic Air Supply and Fill Stations (CryoASFS) initially, and thereafter on the egress route approximately every 1 hour and 30 minutes with a 30 minute air reserve. The ACryoBA evolved originally from a one hour Liquid Air Pack (LAP) developed in the 1980’s for Space Shuttle Rescue forces allowing for longer duration and cool air (Figure 1). It was used successfully for many years, through the end of the Space Shuttle Program. The first attempt at a mine egress pack was the Cryogenic Breathing Apparatus (Figure 2). It was to have a low profile, two hours of breathing, attitude independence, and a simple rapid refill while in use. The CryoBA met the two hour criteria, but with difficulty due to excessive heat leakage caused by the dual 4 liter Dewar design. Much of the stored air was lost as it vaporized faster than it could be used. However, the pack was successful in demonstrating both attitude independence and a simple rapid refill capability. The ACryoBA project was designed to continue the progression and address the deficiencies in the CryoBA. The ACryoBA pack was designed to last 2 hours. It minimizes the heat leakage with a single Dewar and thereby requires less liquid air. The single Dewar design also minimizes weight, making it much more manageable by the user (Figure 3). The ACryoBA complies with 42 CFR part 84 NIOSH certification test requirements. One critical requirement for the ACryoBA is operation in positions other than vertical for periods up to 1/4 (i.e. 30 minutes) of the rated service life of 2 hours; this was accomplished by use of new technology called the “attitude independent pickup” which is abbreviated “AIP.” The AIP, developed by BCS Life Support LLC (patent #8,899,226), has a tube going from the top flange down through the center of the Dewar. At the end it has a flexible bellows and a weighted end. Due to the flexible nature of the bellows, the pickup at the end is free to rotate and follow the liquid level around within +/- 90o of vertical."

Comminution is the single most expensive operation in mineral processing. It consumes about 50% of the energy required for mineral extraction (Agar, 1976). Current comminution technology is both energy-intensive and inefficient. A novel noncontact comminution process concept was developed in this study, whereby selective lib¬eration of minerals from an ore could be potentially achieved. The process involves application of electric and ultrasonic energy to liberate minerals from gangue particles. Introduction The mineral industry is a large user of energy in the US. Energy usage is increasing as the grade of ores processed decreases. It is es¬timated that comminution of ores uses about 32 000 kWh (115 trillion kJ), or 2% of the electric power produced in the US (NMAB-365, 1981). Among other minerals, ce¬ment, iron, and copper processing plants are the largest users of en¬ergy in comminution. Very little of this energy used in conventional grinding (about 1%) is used to gen¬erate new surface. The remainder is wasted (Table 1). Thus, there are substantial energy-saving and economic incentives to improve the efficiency of crushing and grinding techniques for mineral recovery. With an energy efficiency of only 1%, it would seem possible to devise methods to significantly improve comminution technology. This requires that breakage force be applied only where needed, not indiscriminately as in a conven¬tional ball mill (NMAB-365, 1981). Can apparatus and methods be de¬ veloped for large-scale commer¬cial use that allow energy to be fo¬cused at intergranular bounda¬ries? If this can be done, mono¬mineral grains would remain in¬tact and the grinding action would be selective and substantially more efficient. The novel comminution process concept described in this paper uses a combination of electric and ultrasonic energy. This energy breaks the ore and selectively lib¬erates minerals. The process has also been termed a two-stage or electroacoustical comminution process (Goldberger, Epstein, and Parekh, 1982). The mineral grain boundary is usually the weakest area in an ore. By applying electri¬cal energy to the ore, the rock frac¬tures mostly at grain boundaries. At the same time, the electric shock creates secondary hairline fractures in the ore. Additional application of ultrasonic energy to this ore provides further break¬age. The concept was proven on a molybdenum porphyry ore but needs additional study. Technical Background There have been substantial im¬provements in milling machinery and grinding operations, but rela¬tively few attempts have been made to develop alternatives to conventional impact milling. Sev¬eral methods, however, have been investigated that relate to this study. In the early 1970s there was considerable interest in a size re¬duction method known as the Snyder Process (Cavanaugh, 1972). It involved charging coarse ore into a pressure chamber, pressur¬izing with a gas, and activating a quick-opening (15 msec ) dis¬charge valve that connected the chamber to a discharge duct. This allowed solids to fluidize and ac¬celerate, subjecting the material to a variety of impulse phenomena that caused the desired size reduction. Other nonimpact means of achieving breakage and selective size reduction have been de¬scribed in technical and patent literature. Kanellopoulos and Ball (1975) considered using heat to induce thermal stress in quartz¬ite. This would cause cracking and, thus, increase grinding efficiency. The use of electrical energy to induce thermal stress was studied by the General Elec¬tric Co., in cooperation with the Montana School of Mines, under a research grant from the Anaconda

INTRODUCTION The gathering arm loader was patented by Joseph Joy in 1916. This unique machine motion became the standard of the industry and is used on underground loaders and continuous miners throughout the world. Figs. 1 and 2 show two types of gathering arm loaders. The gathering arm loader is a crawler-mounted ma¬chine primarily used for loading coal in a conventional mining system. Other uses also have been found for this machine in noncoal mines and other industries. MECHANICAL ASSEMBLIES The front or loading end of the machine, commonly called the head, consists of a tapered structural frame, hinged at the rear to the chassis and riding the ground at the front. Two bevel-gear cases are mounted in the head. They are connected by a timing shaft, which also acts as a conveyor drive shaft on most models. An eccentric disk attached to each gear case drives the gathering arms. The rear of the arms are attached to a swivel assembly. The motion derived from this arrange¬ment gathers loose material from the ground directly in front of the machine and loads it into the conveyor. Power for this drive is provided by two electric motors mounted under the gathering head. A speed reducer attached to each motor provides a gathering arm speed of approximately 5.2 rad/s (50 rpm). A torque limiting clutch is provided on each reducer to guard the system against sudden impact loading and continual overloading of the motors. The conveyor consists of an open box section through which a universal-type chain carries the ma¬terial to the rear of the machine, where it is discharged into the haulage vehicle. The chain is driven by a sprocket located on the timing shaft between the two gathering-head bevel-gear cases. On some large loader designs, primarily for noncoal applications, the chain is driven by a separate gear motor at the discharge end of the conveyor. However, the system driven by the timing shaft is used most widely. The conveyor frame is hinged just to the rear of the gathering head. It can be raised or lowered by hydraulic cylinders to the desired discharge height. The conveyor frame also is designed to pivot 0.79 rad (45°) either side of the center, just to the rear of the chassis. This feature increases the maneuverability of the ma¬chine and makes it possible to discharge material into the haulage system when in tight quarters such as when turning a crosscut. This function also is controlled by a hydraulic cylinder. The chassis of the loader consists of two crawler frames and cross members, holding the frames in position. The frames are either welded or cast as¬semblies. Replaceable wear runners are provided on the frames to take the wear generated by the crawler chain. An adjustable take-up idler keeps the crawler chain in proper adjustment for maximum life. The drive system for the crawler chains varies with the manufacturer, but it generally is one of two basic designs. One system provides a traction motor for each side of the machine, coupled to a speed reducer. A spur and bevel-gear train transfers power to the sprocket, which drives the crawler chain. Directional control is achieved by disk-type clutches. The other system also uses a motor for each crawler, coupled to a speed reducer. A roller chain drives the sprocket, which in

Common carbon dioxide capturing reagents, such as amines and sodium hydroxide, are expensive, toxic, and energy intensive to regenerate. We have added frothers to a sodium carbonate solution in order to increase the surface area available for CO2 transport within the packed bed of a counter current scrubbing column. Addition of frothers has improved the performance of sodium carbonate scrubbing solutions to be on par with sodium hydroxide scrubbing solutions. This novel enhancement of a relatively inexpensive CO2 capture-regeneration cycle shows potential to allow plants to turn a profit by sequestering a waste product. These results are discussed in detail in the following manuscript. INTRODUCTION The combustion of fossil fuels converts chemical energy to thermal energy. CO2 is produced as a byproduct of the reaction. 80% of the world’s electricity is produced by using this thermal energy to power a generator, accounting for 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions. In an effort to stabilize the rising atmospheric CO2 levels, researchers are investigating the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems in power plants. [1] Efforts to capture CO2 at some power plants have been successful, but the cost of installing and operating the required equipment is high. As such, very few power plants have CCS systems. If CO2 can be captured and processed into a product that can be sold at a profit, installing CCS systems in power plants will be a very attractive business decision. In order for the sale of captured CO2 to become a profitable venture, the cost of capturing the CO2 from a flue gas must be reduced. BACKGROUND The most common method for separating CO2 from a flue gas is by passing it through a counter-current packed bed scrubbing column. The flue gas enters the bottom of a column while a solution of a chemical with properties advantageous to the absorption of CO2 is pumped to the top. The fluids interact in a packed bed, where the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid. CO2 is an acid gas, so it is common for the scrubbing solution to be alkaline in nature in order to neutralize the carbonic acid that is formed when it is dissolves into water. The exhaust exits the top of the column free of carbon dioxide, which exits the column in the scrubbing solution, reacting or complexing with the absorbent. Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of a CO2 scrubbing column. It shows the molar flowrates and compositions of the gas and liquid at the bottom [1], the top [2], and an arbitrary height in the column [Z]. [2,15] L is the molar flowrate of liquid at any point in in the column. G is the molar flowrate of gas at any point in the column. Since the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid, L and G are variable with respect to height. To simplify calculations, the CO2 free molar flowrates Ls and Gs are often used. X is the fraction moles of aqueous CO2 per mole of CO2 free liquid. Y is the fraction moles of gaseous CO2 per mole of CO2 free gas. Figure 2 is a composition diagram of the scrubbing column depicted in figure 1.

The movement of air from the surface, through the workings and then back to the surface, is the most important consideration in the ventilation design. The purpose of mine ventilation is seen as the maintenance of acceptable atmospheric environments wherever men work or travel underground; and acceptability is related to the risk of harmful biological responses associated with exposure to atmospheric environments in mines. In mine ventilation, a design engineer often has to contend with a number of problems not experienced to the same degree in other industrial situations; i.e. the vast extent of many workings - offering continuously moving work locations; the difficulty of predicting. inflows of contaminants to the airways which contain the micro-environment; and especially, the effect of mining activity within the duct system (e.g. mine roadways) carrying the airflow. Mining of uranium does not differ, in many respects, from the mining of other metals; the ore must be drilled, blasted and transported from the mine. Underground mining proceeds by the continous development and advancement of a network of passages and rooms or stopes from which ore is excavated. As in most mines, rock conditions and ore grades in uranium deposits very from area to area and between different mines. 1 In uranium mining, in addition to eliminating noxious gases from blasting, diesel equipment exhaust, and the control of dust, it is also necessary to dilute and remove radon, the gaseous element in the uranium chain and its decay products. Long term epidemiologic studies of United States uranium miners and that of miners in Czechoslovakia have confirmed that there is an association between excessive ex¬posure to radon daughters and an increased risk of lung cancer. The common practices for controlling these airborne contaminants are: (1) the circulation of large volumes of fresh air from surface to dilute these contaminants to a permissible concentration, and (2) the sealing of worked-out areas to prevent ingress of radon into ventilating air. 2 The sealing of worked-out areas can be easily and effectively accomplished, but the contaminants intro¬duced from the workings may raise the concentrations in the airways despite a good ventilation system and use of the maximum available amount of fresh air. The ventilating air can be strategically filtered to reduce dust and radon daughters to acceptable levels, and reused prior to final discharge. This strategy properly applied, will decrease the air colume requirements in certain marginal areas of the mine and thereby avoid an overall increase in the mine airflow. This is particularly advantageous in the cold climates of Canada, where the incoming fresh air must be heated in the winter months to a comfortable temperature, Thus, an economical and technically feasible air filtration system, strategically placed, can improve the underground mining environment and reduce the overall cost of ventilating the mines. In addition to affording flexibilty to the venti¬lation system, a potential saving of $1,500/m3/s/year would be realized if air is successfully cleaned and reused when compared with the conventional methods of generating an air current. 3 Denison is justly proud of its achievements in the air filtration technology development. This paper limits itself to an examination of the radiation control aspect of the air filtration strategy.

"Since 1994 the Bureau of Reclamation has used risk analysis to evaluate dams. Risk considers both the likelihood of failure and the expected consequences should failure occur. Risk analysis relies on the detailed formulation and critical analysis of all possible potential failure modes. Potential failure modes are formulated by describing the sequence of events that must occur to result in failure, where failure is defined as the uncontrolled release of the impounded reservoir. Failure occurs in response to loadings such as water seepage through a dam (static forces), shaking from an earthquake (dynamic forces), sudden flood inflows (hydrologic forces), or accidental overfilling (operational errors). Reclamation has applied risk analysis methods to inactive and abandoned mines to evaluate tailings dams and flooded underground mines. Case histories of potential failure mode analysis as applied to mine impounded water illustrates what critical technical information is needed to determine if failure is likely, what the consequences of failure are likely to be, and what are the highest risks that should be addressed first. INTRODUCTION Impounded water, and high water content wastes, at mining and industrial processing sites are potential threats to public safety and the environment. Recent failures such as the TVA Kingston flyash impoundment failure in Tennessee in 2008 (5.4 million yd3 released), the Mt Poly Tailings Dam failure in British Columbia in 2014 (5.8 million yd3 released), and the Smarco Fundao Tailings Dam failure in Brazil in 2015 (78 million yd3 released) has renewed attention to this issue. Potential risks from impounded water at mining and industrial sites originates not only from tailing dams, but also from water in process ponds and conveyance pipelines, sediment retention dams, water retention dams, mine pit lakes, and flooded underground mine workings. Conventional water retaining dams also have a record of failure. Notable examples of failure include Vajont Dam in Italy in 1963 (2,600 lives lost), Banqiao and Shimantan Dams in China in 1975 (171,000 lives lost), and Machhu-II Dam in India (10,000 lives lost). After the 1976 Teton Dam failure in Idaho, the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) established a Dam Safety Program. By 1984 the agency developed and began using risk analysis methods. Reclamation operates and maintains an inventory of hundreds of aging dams which were designed and constructed over a period of one hundred years. Many of these facilities were constructed using engineering design and construction methods which would not be considered good practice according to present day standards. Diligent observational monitoring, detailed site investigations, and the application of risk evaluation to the BOR dam inventory has identified many deficiencies resulting in significant demands on available funding for remediation efforts. The application of risk analysis has allowed the agency to rank sites by risk. By giving priority of remedial efforts to high risk sites, significant improvements to dam safety have been achieved. BOR has also applied risk analysis to evaluate and reclaim inactive and abandoned mining and industrial sites. The application of risk analysis methods in the mining industry is not new, the methodology was transferred to the mining industry more than 15 years ago as discussed in ICOLD Bulleting 121 (ICOLD, 2001), yet failures persist. Introduction Net Present Value (NPV) techniques are becoming widely used in industry as a standard analytical tool in making capital budgeting decisions. However, NPV techniques are often misused in "common practice." A comparison was made between the use of NPV techniques in common practice and an Adjusted Net Present Value (ANPV) approach to capital budgeting in the financial analysis of a mining project. The comparison was made by applying both methods to a hypothetical copper project. The intent of the analysis is to provide an example for practitioners to follow when financially analyzing mining (or other) projects. To maintain the thrust of the analysis, the project has been evaluated as a stand alone, total project. No consideration has been made of the division of cash flows accruing to various owners over the life of the project. This omission will not affect the comparative nature of the analysis. This discussion assumes that the reader is familiar with present value as a concept and as a tool in capital budgeting. Finance theory has embraced NPV analysis as the correct way to evaluate capital budgeting alternatives. Many articles have been written expounding the virtues of NPV over other capital budgeting methods, such as Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Payback, Accounting Rate of Return, and others. It is not the purpose of this article to review all of the literature in this area; suffice it to say that in academic circles NPV concepts are accepted as the norm. A survey by Schall, Sundem, and Geijsbeck (1978) indicates that major US companies are finally following in academia&apos;s footsteps. Fifty-six percent of the companies responding to the survey use NPV techniques in their capital budgeting process. Further, some 86% of the companies surveyed use discounted cash flow methods (NPV or IRR) for capital budgeting decisions. This compares with a survey by Klammer (1972) that showed 57% of companies using both techniques, a considerable increase in seven years. With the increasing use of NPV techniques in industry, there are certain uses in common practice that can give misleading results. Five common errors in NPV analysis of large projects are: • No distinction is made between real and nominal cashflows. • The discount rate(s) used in the NPV analysis is not formally adjusted for risk. • There is no distinction of possible differences in the riskiness of different project cash flows; i.e., revenue vs. depreciation. • There is no recognition of the cash benefits to the project from interest tax shields (interest payments on the project&apos;s debt that are tax deductible). • There is no clear recognition of subsidies to the project from concessionary debt financing. No Distinction Between Real and Nominal Cash Flows Often, expected cash flows for a project are stated as a mixture of real (in constant dollars) and nominal (in current dollars) cash flows. For example, expected revenue cash flows may be stated in real terms and depreciation may be stated in nominal terms. If cash flows are added together to give an after tax cash flow, and this single cash stream is discounted, care must be taken to ensure that cash flows are consistently stated. All cash flows should either be stated in nominal terms or in real terms. In addition, the discount rate used must be stated in the same terms as the cash flows being discounted. Real cash flows must be discounted using real discount rates and nominal cash flows using nominal discount rates. To adequately attack the longwall dust problem, the US Bureau of Mines funded a contract to define dust sources on a longwall mine face area. The study examined the shearer during sumping, cutting, and tramming, the conveyor, and the roof supports. Tests showed the shearer to be the major dust source. Introduction Long-term illnesses place a heavy burden on miners, the mining industry, and taxpayers. Black lung payments to more than 400,000 miners and their survivors exceeded $9 billion between 1970 and 1980. They are continuing at a rate of $1 billion per year. Recent MSHA data indicate more than 50% of the longwall faces are still out of compliance with the 2 mg/m3 (0.00007 oz per cu ft) respirable dust regulation. Allowable dust limits are often further reduced owing to the presence of silica dust. This substantially increases the problem&apos;s severity. Research in the 1970s showed that by modifying the mining method through changing drum-type mining machines from high rpm shallow cutting to slow rpm deep cutting, both specific dust and energy could be reduced (Black et al., 1978; Ludlow and Wilson, 1982; Roepke, Lindroth, and Myren, 1976). The coal mining industry is using more longwall equipment to economically obtain high productivity. This high production rate, however, makes it difficult for longwalls to meet the legal dust standard. Research is showing how both these concerns may be addressed at the mining face. Results reported here explain the relationship of various major elements of the longwall system to dust generation on the longwall face. This paper is based on work completed by Foster-Miller Associates Inc. Objectives were to differentiate dust sources on the longwall face and to quantify dust levels for various elements of the shearer drum. The work was accomplished in two phases. Jonathon Ludlow, project engineer for FMA, developed and performed the necessary testing (Ludlow and Marshall, 1983). Bradley, Hadden, and Weston (1983) have done evaluations on British coal mines that produced similar results to those reported here. They found causative rela¬tionships between haulage speed, production, depth cut, drum speed, and dust generation. They also found that roof support movement increased the dustiness, whereas this work indicated that support movement had only a minor effect on total dust exposure. Both of these results are valid when the variation of mining conditions is analyzed. British mines are deeper than US mines. Therefore, roof rocks and coal are more fragmented than in the shallower US mines. Other reasons for the dust differences include the weaker shales found in Britain and the variation of roof support equipment designs between the UK and the US. Four mines in this report had rock roofs and, thus, would be less dusty. The fifth longwall mine had a coal roof, but the large cross-sectional area and high air velocity minimized dust exposure. Mines and Equipment Five underground longwall mine sites were tested (Fig. 1). All were using double-ended ranging-drum shearers (derds) with some variations in equipment. The mines and equipment details are shown in Table 1. No modification of mining equipment or operating cycles was made during the first phase of testing. The mining process observed followed the normal mine operating procedures. Three GCA RAM-1 respirable dust monitors and two vortex anemometers with cycle notations on portable tape recorders were used in each face area. The start and end of each cycle segment were recorded. Introduction One hundred years ago, a recent college graduate created the US aluminum industry. He found an economic way to crack the primeval bond that makes the metal so special. Aluminum doesn&apos;t "rust" - oxidize progressively. Rather, when exposed to air, it instantly forms a gem-hard but microscopic oxide coating. This seals off oxygen from the metal underneath. Scratch it and the seal reforms instantly. That tight chemical bond is the reason the metal is not found in nature; it exists only as a compound. The bond had to be broken to free the shiny metal. But once it is free, that self-sealing protection, alongside a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, offers a marvelous material. Until 100 years ago, finding a way to do that economically was a challenge that defied science. Then it was solved, in a remarkable coincidence, on both sides of the Atlantic. And the way was paved for a material that would become the second most widely used metal in the world. Until that time, aluminum was a rare and precious metal. But then two young scientists independently invented the process that took aluminum outside the laboratory and into applications ranging from pots and pans to spacecraft. Discovery of aluminum Other major metals - copper, iron, lead, gold, and silver - had been used for thousands of years. But aluminum was entirely unknown until 1782, when French chemist Antoine Lavoisier suspected its presence. It was not actually discovered until Sir Humphry Davy, in England, detected it in clay in 1807. It was first isolated as a free metal only in 1825, by Denmark&apos;s Hans Christian Oersted. For years, laboratory methods yielded aluminum only in tiny amounts costing about $1200/kg ($545 per lb) - $13,333/kg ($6000 per lb) in today&apos;s dollars. Methods developed by French scientist Henri Sainte-Claire Deville in 1854 cut the cost to about $200/kg ($90 per lb). King Frederick VII of Denmark had a helmet of aluminum and gold. And Emperor Napoleon III of France reportedly served his most exalted guests at a state dinner with aluminum plates. He left the lower ranks to dine from pure gold. Deville and others continued to reduce production costs. But the price of aluminum still rivaled silver - $31/kg ($14 per lb) versus about $35/kg ($16 per lb) for silver. Then in 1884, a 2.8-kg (6.25-1b), 230-mm-tall (9-in.-tall) aluminum pyramid was cast as the tip of the Washington Monument. It was probably the first architectural use of aluminum. And it is still there after more than a century. The attractive properties of aluminum were obvious: it is lightweight but strong, conducts heat and electricity, reflects light and other electromagnetic radiation, and resists corrosion. But its commercial promise was blocked by its cost. In 1885, the price of aluminum was $17.70/kg ($8 per lb). It stayed there for the next couple of years until the Hall-Heroult process brought it down sharply. Hall-Heroult process lowers aluminum costs The characteristic that kept aluminum hidden so long continued to thwart chemists. Aluminum clings to oxygen so tightly that it is never found as a free metal in nature, and it is hard to break that bond chemically. The best chemical methods of the 1880s required sodium, and sodium itself was expensive. At Oberlin College in Ohio, chemistry professor Frank Fanning Jewett advised his students that anyone who could make aluminum inexpensive would do humanity a favor and get rich as well.

Introduction Spontaneous combustion in coal mining is recognized as a major hazard in terms of safety and economics. A survey by Olaf (1979) revealed that 80% of coal mine fires were caused by spontaneous combustion. Modern mining methods demand a high capital investment. Closure of a working face may then result in a huge loss. Even a short production interruption can prove expensive. Spontaneous combustion may also produce lethal amounts of carbon monoxide, thus posing a serious threat to the health and safety of underground miners. The worldwide recession in the early 1980s resulted in a number of mine closures and production cutbacks. So large stockpiles at mine sites were common. Experience has shown that stockpile fires are difficult to extinguish. Critical factors influencing spontaneous combustion There is no simple method of predicting whether a particular mining method applied to a specific coal seam will result in spontaneous combustion. Under favorable conditions of heat accumulation, spontaneous combustion can occur with any type of coal. It is known that subbituminous coals are more susceptible compared to low volatility bituminous coals, and that a high ratio of exinite increases the risk. However, the inherent moisture content of the coal and the exposed surface area may be more significant. Actual mining and ventilation conditions also strongly influence susceptibility. In practice, the experience gained with the mining method applied to a particular type of coal seam must be carefully evaluated with respect to the factors responsible for spontaneous combustion. Feng, Chakravorty, and Cochrane (1973) summarized the critical factors influencing spontaneous combustion in coal mines (Table 1). Prevention methods and strategies Mine layout is the most important factor preventing spontaneous heating. Working districts should be designed so that a particular section can be isolated on short notice without affecting production in others. Sites for preparatory seals should be identified and marked during planning. With coal seams that are highly susceptible to spontaneous combustion, the retreat method of working is preferred. This is because the gob is not subjected to a large difference in ventilation pressure. Coal pillars should be designed to resist excessive crush. The panel system of working is preferred, particularly for mining coals susceptible to spontaneous combustion. The size of each panel is calculated based on the incubation period and the rate of extraction. Controlling air leakage is also important for controlling spontaneous combustion. This is usually achieved by minimizing ventilation pressure difference, proper siting of doors, and avoiding unnecessary stopping and starting of fans. Air leakage is also reduced by sealant coating, injection of cements in cracks and crevices, and by maintaining good gateside packs. Application of inhibitors to control spontaneous combustion met with limited success. Chamberlain and Hall (1973) concluded that borate solution or Montan powder sprayed in the gob area or infused into a low rank coal would reduce the possibility of spontaneous combustion. Early detection of heating Significant research is being conducted worldwide to develop methods for early detection of heating. Monitoring combustion products during the early stage of heating is the most suitable method for detecting spontaneous combustion. The major gaseous products resulting from low temperature oxidation of coal are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and water vapor. In mining operations, carbon dioxide monitoring is considered unsuitable because there are sources other than spontaneous heating from which this gas may originate. As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net-zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalization, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields, leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options for students. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that are suited to the contemporary and future mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, upskilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more. In countries like Australia, where mining plays a crucial role in the economy, the need for curriculum updates is more pressing than ever. As the mining industry evolves with new technologies and sustainable practices, there is a growing demand for a workforce skilled in these modern approaches. Recognizing this necessity, universities such as the University of New South Wales and Curtin University have taken significant steps to revamp their educational programs. By updating their academic offerings, both universities aim to equip graduates with the necessary skills to drive innovation and sustainability in mining, supporting Australia’s development as a leader in this critical sector. Moreover, the selection of topics that drive curricula update and the focus of the research institutions in mining engineering must extend beyond mere technological and technical aspects to include social and ethical dimensions. In this context, the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, in association with the Colorado School of Mines, has introduced the topic of humanitarian engineering (HE) in 2020. HE is a sociotechnical approach that focuses on developing engineering solutions that promote the sustainable development of communities addressing their basic needs and aiming to improve their quality of life (Menéndez-Aguado et al., 2023; Smith et al., 2023). By focusing on sustainable development, community engagement and equitable resource distribution, HE helps the industry build positive relationships with stakeholders, reduce conflicts and foster social license to operate. As the mining industry seeks sustainable and socially responsible practices, future engineers require training in this area to understand the broader impacts of their work, fostering a mindset that prioritizes community well-being and environmental stewardship alongside technical proficiency. However, developing skills toward humanitarian engineering and sustainable mining among new generations of mining professionals remains a complex task. Integrating the necessary content to prepare future engineers for the multifaceted demands of the industry into a single study program poses significant challenges. To address these complexities, modern educational approaches such as the ones integrated in the mining engineering programs at Clausthal University of Technology can be leveraged to enhance both teaching and learning experiences (Binder, 2024b; Bothe-Fiekert et al., 2023; Nowosad et al., 2024). Innovative teaching methods, such as blended-learning, project-based learning, case studies, scenario simulations and interdisciplinary collaborations, can help bridge gaps by fostering critical thinking, creativity and empathy among students. By embracing modern pedagogical strategies, institutions can better equip future engineers to navigate the evolving landscape of the mining industry responsibly and effectively.

Introduction Many discoveries have been made during the-past decade of low grade gold-silver deposits in the western US. This has stimulated development of low cost cyanidation procedures for precious metal extraction. Heap leach cyanidation techniques possess considerable potential for application to these low grade ores, small ore bodies, mine strip waste, and tailing materials where fine grinding is not necessary for good extraction. For heap leaching to be successful, these resources must have good permeability to achieve uniform distribution of the cyanide solution throughout the heaps. Some of the most difficult of the gold and silver ores to treat successfully by heap leaching are those containing excessive amounts of clays, or fines generated by crushing. Presence of excessive amounts of slimes, -50 µm (-270 mesh), in the heap leach feed will slow percolation, cause channeling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap. This may result in unreasonably long leaching periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can completely seal the ore heap. This causes the leach solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than penetrate the ore bed. The problem of heap leaching ores with fines can be aggravated while preparing ore heaps because of the natural sorting of coarse and fine material that occurs. This phenomenon results in concentration or ore fines in the center of individual ore piles and concentration of larger rock fragments of the lower slopes and base of the pile. When the individual piles within the heap are leveled off for the installation of the sprinkling system, additional segregation occurs as the fines sift through the coarser ore particles. This results in localized areas or zones with marked differences in permeability. Consequently, the leach solutions follow the course of least resistance. They percolate down through the coarse ore regions and bypass or barely wet areas that contain large amounts of fines or slimes. Effective use of marginal gold and silver resources by heap leaching required development of new methods to achieve more uniform size distribution when preparing ore heaps and better slime control during leaching. Early methods Agglomeration and balling of crushed ore to produce a porous and more uniform feed material for heap leaching is a viable method for treating clayey ores. Researchers from the US Bureau of Mines in Reno, NV began agglomeration pretreatment research in the mid-1970s for applications to and exploitation of these poor percolating feed materials. Little attention had been given to such methods before the Bureau&apos;s research. In 1905, T. C. Scrutton developed a unique technique for obtaining rapid vat leaching of a clayey ore where the gold was finely disseminated. His technique consisted of rolling the ore down a chute inclined at 60° to form agglomerates or balls readily permeable by the cyanide solution. However, these agglomerates lacked rigidity. And, to ensure good percolation leaching and washing, they could not be bedded in layers more than 1 m (3 ft) deep. If this depth was exceeded, it is difficult to obtain uniform leaching and washing. This results in reduced gold recovery. Shepard and others in 1937 studied the addition of lime and carbon dioxide or calcium carbonate to gold-bearing tailings to form agglomerates suitable for vat leaching. Satisfactory percolation flow rates were achieved in 90 g (3 oz) scale experiments, but the reagent requirements were cost prohibitive. M.J. McPherson Having worked on the thermodynamics of air/liquid-water mixtures passing through the surface fans of deep mines, I find this paper of great interest and congratulate the authors on producing it. There are two matters, however, deserving discussion. First, the authors have described the classical theory of fog formation with fogging occurring at "supersaturation." In fact, the process of fog formation begins well below 100% humidity. The more strongly hygroscopic nuclei in the atmosphere will attract water molecules and begin to grow at a relative humidity perhaps as low as 70%. The process is a dynamic one with both condensation and evaporation taking place throughout the mixture on microscopic liquid surfaces. As saturation is approached, the rate of condensation accelerates rapidly producing the familiar reduction in visibility. Hygroscopic nuclei are present in all natural atmospheres and under the appropriate conditions of pressure and temperature, will produce clean fogs. However, if the air is polluted by particulates from combustion or other processes then the resultant coagulation with growing liquid particles may produce dense (and sometimes photochemical) smogs. It is this process that is likely to occur in underground mines when moist air is cooled below dew point. Second, the authors have summarized very well the individual measures that might alleviate the problem. In particular, I agree that neither heating nor refrigerating the air, by themselves, provides a satisfactory solution. However, there is a combination of these that provides a neat and effective control of fog formation. This involves a small, self-contained refrigeration unit within a duct but without the usual external heat rejection facility. The air is cooled below dew point and, hence, dehumidified on passing over the cold evaporator coils. The heat from the condenser is rejected back into the air downstream from the water eliminator, as shown in Fig. 1. The duct configuration can be designed to create good mixing at the outlet. I have used a climatic simulation program to illustrate the effect, assuming a 500-m (1,640 ft) long airway of cross section 60 m2 (645 sq ft), an airflow of 9 m3/s (318 cu ft per sec), inlet conditions of 19/19.25°C (66/67°F) wet bulb/dry bulb temperatures, a virgin rock temperature of 17°C (63°F) and typical rock thermal properties for a hard-rock mine. I have also assumed that 10% of the rock surface is wet. Figure 2 shows the variation in temperatures along the airway if no measures are taken. The relative humidity remains close to 100% and condensation will occur throughout the length of the airway. Before any such installation is designed, the exercise must, of course, be repeated for each location with accurate data. However, this example demonstrates the potential of the system. The idea is not new - the principle is sometimes used in air-conditioning plants for buildings. Figure 3 shows the effect of removing 30 kw of heat by evaporator coils sited 40 m (131 ft) along the airway and rejecting that heat (plus another 10 kw of compressor and fan power) into the air at 60 m (197 ft). Condensate water is produced, at a rate of 0.45 L/min (0.12 gpm). The result of this sequential cooling/dehumidification/heating process is to separate the wet and dry bulb temperatures along the length of the airway. The relative humidity increases from 80% at the duct outlet to 92% at 500 m (1,640 ft). The airway is maintained free from fog.

Discussion by D.G. Krige I read the paper "The jackknife approach" with interest. There appears to be a widespread misunderstanding of the kriging variance as a measure of the error variance of the kriged grade estimate of an ore block. Virtually all mineral deposits display skew frequency distributions and are subject to the well-known proportional effect. Thus, it is usual to find in an ore body, when subdivided a really into subpopulations, that the variances of the grades (or the total sills of the variograms) for the subpopulations will be correlated with the corresponding mean grades (usually linearly with the squares of the mean grades). Thus, the variogram will be station. When this feature is evident, the relative variograms for the subpopulations (i.e., with variogram values divided by the relevant mean squared) will be similar, or they could even be accepted at an averaged model for the whole ore body with stationarity. Using this approach, the kriging variance will reflect the relative error variance that is to be multiplied by the kriged block grade estimate squared to yield the usual kriging variance for purposes of confidential limits. The objection that the kriging variance does not take into account the local grades used for a block valuation then falls away. In the example given by the authors, the global mean grade is not recorded. But the global variance, taken at the value of the total sill, is 0.005, whereas the variance of the 11 values used in the example is 0.000152. The two variances differ by a factor of nearly six. If the relative variogram approach is applicable in this case, the need for a jackknife technique will fall away. Also note that, for skew distributions, the confidence limits for ore-block estimates will be skew as well, and symmetrical normal limits will not apply. RepIy by G.S. Adisoma and M.G. Hester There are a few interesting ways to utilize the block-by-block kriging variance that the authors have encountered. One of them is to classify a particular block into a proven-probable reserve or a possible-resource category, using a somewhat subjectively determined kriging variance value. Here, the kriging variance still represents the drilling density, i.e., data configuration more than the data values. Professor Krige mentions another ingenious approach through the use of relative variograms. This will yield a block kriging variance that takes into account local (block) grade, as he correctly points out, for purposes of confidence limits. However, we are more interested in quantifying the uncertainties associated with grade estimation in a much larger scale than a block. e.g., for a mining phase or the minable reserve. The jackknife, through the block kriging shortcut, provides a simple solution to obtain a single estimation variance for a general shape. The authors&apos; main reference discusses different ways to handle skewed distributions typical in mineral resource estimation, e.g., the weighted jackknife approach or data transformation. Also, as with any technique, we can always improve our estimate by subdividing into smaller populations that are geologically and statistically separate domains. As we have mentioned; the jackknife is but a tool in our collection of tools to solve estimation problems. The jackknife&apos;s appeals are its simplicity and versatility. It is handy when no other solution is available, or when the available solution is not practical. It is used with other methods, not to replace them altogether. ?

Introduction The Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt in California extends from Mariposa north for more than 420 km (200 miles). It includes the Grass Valley and Alleghany districts in the zone of Northern Mines and the famous Mother Lode to the south. The gold belt has produced more than 3.1 kt (100 million oz) of gold since its discovery in 1848. This remarkable production, at the present gold price, would be valued at more than $40 billion. The Law of Gambler&apos;s Ruin supposes that averages are based on systematic rather than random variations. It emphasizes the vast differences between finite and infinite probability. By applying this Law to this figure, it can be seen that the belt has produced an average of 15.5 t (500,000 oz) of gold per running mile. Many geologists believe, with some justification, that less than half the gold in this belt has been mined. Sixty per cent of the past production has come from lode deposits, the balance from Tertiary and Recent placer gravels. This paper will concern itself with the developing lode mines along the Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt. As a further and final note regarding placer mining along this belt, Mark Twain suggested that placer miners, having lost their senses, had contributed liberally to the population of California&apos;s insane asylums. After a 40-year lull with little or no gold production, the lode mines of this famous belt are showing signs of renewed activity. Two open pit mines, the Sonora (Jamestown) and Carson Hill, are now in operation at substantial scales. Two others, the Goldenbell (Pine Tree-Josephine) and the Royal-Mountain King, are being readied for production on equally impressive scales. All are in the southern part of the Mother Lode. Exploration farther north, at Sutter Creek, Drytown, and Georgetown, is showing encouraging results in developing deeper lode deposits. This new activity has been sponsored to a large extent by junior Canadian mining and exploration companies. Most of the established American mining companies have looked the other way, not participating in this important development. One major reason for domestic disinterest in this opportunity is there is little chance for heap leachable open pit ore in this belt, excluding Carson Hill. And heap leaching has become fashionable with American mining companies today. Also, this great old gold belt must have been worked out, for why else is there so little activity here - Catch 22 logic. Another reason is that if a new deposit of size and grade similar to the mines in the past was found, high costs would preclude a profitable operation. And, finally, California environmentalists would not permit mining, even if a rich deposit were found. These may all be pefectly valid reasons not to explore for gold along this belt. But a look at the history of gold mining in California may suggest that the future for exploration and development of the gold resources in the Sierra Nevada Foothills can be greater than the past. It was during the Depression of the 1930s that this gold belt saw its maximum activity, with more than 3000 mines in operation. Some were father and son operations producing only a few tons of ore a day. Other mines employed hundreds of miners to hoist more than 900 t/d (1000 stpd). Some ores were of marginal grade. Aquifer. A formation, group of formations, or part of a formation that contains sufficient satu rated permeable material to yield significant quan tities of water to wells and springs. Artesian. Synonymous with confined; see ground water, confined. Capillary fringe. The zone immediately above the water table in which all or some of the interstices are filled with water that is under less than atmospheric pressure and that is continuous with the water below the water table. Conceptual model. A conceptualization of a field hydrogeologic framework that facilitates the development of analytical field testing procedures. The results of the test(s) may force changes in the initial conceptual model. Conductivity, hydraulic. Replaces the term "field coefficient of permeability." The volume of water at the existing kinematic viscosity that will move in unit time under a unit hydraulic gradient through a unit area measured at right angles to the direction of flow, if the porous medium is isotropic and the fluid homogeneous. Confining bed. A body of "impermeable" material stratigraphically adjacent to one or more aquifers; its hydraulic conductivity may range from nearly zero to some value distinctly lower than that of the aquifer. Ground water under pressure significantly greater than atmospheric; its upper limit is the bottom of a bed of distinctly lower hydraulic conductivity than that of the material in which the confined water occurs. Ground water, perched. Unconfined ground water separated from an underlying body of ground water by an unsaturated zone. Ground water, unconfined. Water in an aquifer that has a water table. Head, static. Height above a standard datum of the surface of a column of water (or other liquid) that can be supported by the static pressure at a given point. Homogeneity. Hydrogeologic properties are identical everywhere. Hydraulic gradient. Change in static head per unit of distance in a given direction. Hydrostratigraphic unit. A body of material having considerable lateral extent and comprising a geologic framework for a reasonably distinct hydrogeologic system. Isotropy. Condition in which all significant properties are independent of direction. Porosity. Property of containing interstices or voids; may be expressed quantitatively as the ratio of the volume of its interstices to its total volume. Porosity, effective. Interconnected pore space available for fluid transmission; expressed as a percentage of the total volume occupied by the interconnecting interstices. Potentiometric surface. A surface that represents the static head along a particular specified surface or stratum. Specific retention. Ratio of the volume of water that the rock or soil, after being saturated, will retain against the pull of gravity to the volume of the rock or soil. Specific yield. Ratio of the volume of water that the rock or soil, after being saturated, will yield by gravity to the volume of the rock or soil. Storage, specific. The volume of water released from or taken into storage per unit volume of the porous medium per unit change in head.

A total transportation system providing for delivery of finished products to customers and raw materials to the plant is one of the key elements contributing to Dravo Lime Co.&apos;s success. Dravo Lime operates one of the largest noncaptive lime and limestone plants in the US at Maysville, KY, where products produced can cost as much to deliver as they do to manufacture, depending on the product itself, its destination, and mode of transportation. With delivery costs comprising a significant portion of total costs for its products, Dravo Lime has made total transportation services an integral part of its business strategy. Prices for most products produced at Maysville are quoted f.o.b. destination. In short, Dravo Lime&apos;s Distribution Department relies on the approach that says to customers: "Leave the delivery to us." The 0.9-Mt/a (1-million stpy) Maysville facility, located about 121 km (75 miles) east of Cincinnati, OH, on the Ohio River, primarily produces sulfur-absorbing Thiosorbic lime used by coal-fired electric utilities as a scrubber reagent to remove SO2 from stack gases. The product is currently supplied to eight power plants in the Ohio River valley region which extends through portions of Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The plant ships approximately 907 kt (1 million st) of lime and a comparable amount of limestone fines each year. In addition, it arranges for delivery of about 181 kt (200,000 st) of coal to the plant. Lime is transported by covered hopper barges, covered rail cars, covered dump trucks, and pneumatic trucks. It is transferred from barges to storage silos and trucks at a terminal on the Ohio River near Marietta, OH. At another terminal near Aliquippa, PA, lime is transferred from barges to silos, trucks, and rail cars. Future plans call for rail-truck transfer terminals. To produce lime from limestone at the Maysville plant, about 181 kt (200,000 st) of coal is burned annually in three coal-fired kilns. In transporting this coal from the mine to Maysville, Dravo takes maximum advantage of opportunities for reloading carriers with limestone for outbound backhaul movement. Coal, shipped from southeastern Kentucky mines in rail cars, is transferred to barges at a river terminal in West Virginia. After it is unloaded at Maysville, the barges are cleaned with a front-end loader and then reloaded with limestone. Limestone also is backhauled in connection with truck deliveries of coal. The economics of using backhaul shipments has permitted Dravo to enter into markets in which Maysville limestone otherwise would not be competitive. The company plans to backhaul limestone in empty open hopper cars in the future. As part of its ongoing assessment of the distribution system that supports the Maysville operation, Dravo Lime recognizes that a new environment has developed between shippers and carriers because of regulatory changes in the railroad and trucking industries. Although dry bulk shipments by barge to and from Maysville have always been unregulated, other forms of transportation have not. With railroads and motor carriers now approaching varying degrees of deregulation, contracts and agreements are replacing tariffs, and rate negotiations are becoming a daily activity. Dravo Lime plans to take advantage of these transportation changes, all of which may be beneficial to both its plant and its customers.
