Discussion by A. Unal Barbaro et al. (1990) implemented a tedious study aimed at delineating the short-scale spatial variability of sulfur in a coal seam. It is not possible, however, to extend their conclusions to any other coal seam or use their in any other fashion, because the background geology was not presented. Nor were the conclusions accompanied by geological interpretations in the paper. In addition, an unfortunate printing error occurred where the total sulfur (determined by High Temperature Combustion) variogram in Fig.3 was duplicated in Fig. 2 instead of the seam height variogram. A more serious error, however, has been committed in the definition of the variable, seam height. What is defined as seam height by Barbaro et al. (1990) is, in essence, mining height, and is not a regionalized variable that should be studied by geostatistical methods directly. Despite the fact that the variable, seam height, is not defined in the paper explicitly, the following quotation discloses the fallacy: "All roof rock that exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft) from the floor was not taken because the longwall was operated to not mine more than 1.8 in (6 ft) unless the coal seam height exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft)." From this definition, the seam height, and therefore the sampling height, is equal to the actual coal thickness, if the coal thickness is greater than 1.8 m (6 ft). Otherwise, it is equal to the sum of the coal thickness plus the thickness of the roof rock that complements the thickness to 1.8 m (6 ft). In the latter case, the seam height is constant and equal to 1.8 m (6 ft). It is possible to conduct a variogram study on a pool of samples that are realizations of two different variables. But the conclusions derived would not belong to any one of the two variables uniquely and, therefore, do not possess any significance. Geostatistical analysis is irrelevant for the sum of multiple regionalized variables formed by arbitrary selections. In a two-seam setting, for example, the mining height, as defined by the thickness of one seam at one location and the thickness of both seams at another location (due to quality and/or minimum thickness considerations perhaps), should not be used in the calculation of one common variogram. The two seams should be modeled separately. They can then be combined according to the specific purposes of the study. On the other hand, if a constant is added to a regionalized variable (to incorporate dilution perhaps), the variogram of the new variable will not change. Barbaro et al. (1990), surprisingly, does not give any geological interpretation of their results despite the fact that most of them can be explained by the origins of sulfur in a coal seam. The presentation of the results of a geostatistical study with no reference to the geology of the deposit is uninformative. It may also be misleading for the potential users of geostatistics, It is not unusual to find nuggets of pyrite in coal seams. In such cases, pyritic sulfur will probably display a spatial structure for only a very small distance that will appear in the experimental variogram as no spatial correlation. This very well known phenomenon is called the pure nugget effect in geostatistics (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978) and perhaps can explain the lack of correlation found for pyritic sulfur content. The lack of correlation found for the total sulfur content may also be explained in the same way because the total sulfur content is dominated by the pyritic sulfur content in this case study. One should notice, however, that the situation may completely be reversed after cleaning the coal. Not all of the inorganic sulfur should be expected to be in the form of pyrite nuggets in a coal seam. It may also be disseminated in the coal seam and it is expected that it follows a certain spatial structure. However, an existing spatial structure may be masked by including a part of the roof rock, rich in sulfides, into the seam thickness in an arbitrary fashion because areas having a sandstone roof sometimes are known to show a higher sulfur content due to the downward percolation of solutions rich in iron sulfides (Clark, 1979). Plants use sulfur in their growth processes. Much of this sulfur is bound organically during peat accumulation and coal formation (Cecil et al., 1978.) This suggests a spatial structure of some sort for the organic sulfur. However, it is not possible to test this hypothesis because the results obtained by the authors for the organic sulfur content are not given in this paper. For this reason, the conclusion that simple average of the nearby samples would provide the best unbiased estimates is questionable for organic sulfur and is not based on any substantial supporting evidence. It is suspected that no spatial structure was detected and this was due to high sampling and laboratory analysis errors. Before concluding that sulfur variability in the seam at the location of study was random, a more detailed study for the disseminated non-pyritic sulfur should have been conducted, not for the sake of scientific curiosity only, but also due to its utmost importance with regard to coal cleaning and emission control. Pyritic sulfur can be cleaned to a considerable extent, whereas organic sulfur can not, making the emission control strategies highly dependent on the spatial distribution of the organic sulfur (Knudsen, 1981). In the light of these facts, one wonders why Barbaro et al. (1990) did not present the results of their study for the sulfate and organic sulfur content. "Rare earth elements (REEs) found in coal are in the form of minerals, ion-adsorbed onto clay surfaces or inner layers, or organically bound. Rare earth minerals such as monazite exist in coal and have grain sizes smaller than 5 µm. In this study, froth flotation was successful in concentrating rare earth minerals existing in a thickener underflow material derived from Fire Clay seam coal that contained around 431 ppm of total rare earth elements (TREE) on a dry ash basis. Conditioning with fatty acid followed by processing using multiple stages of conventional flotation produced a final concentrate containing 2,300 ppm TREE. Using a laboratory flotation column to limit hydraulic entrainment, the TREE content was further enriched to around 4,700 ppm, which equated to an enrichment ratio of 10:1.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) are becoming increasingly important and have been widely used as raw materials for the production of phosphor, metal catalysts, magnets and batteries (Binnemans et al., 2013; Zhang et al., 2015). REE recovery from alternative sources such as coal and coal byproducts has the potential to stabilize the economic viability of coal mining operations while providing a dependable supply of critical materials.The average REE content of the world’s coal resources is around 60 to 70 ppm (Zhang et al., 2015). There are many well-known coal beds with high contents of REEs such as those in the Far East coalfields in Russia with contents of 300 to 1,000 ppm, the Fire Clay coal seam in eastern Kentucky in the United States with contents around 500 ppm and the Sydney Basin in Nova Scotia, Canada, with contents of 72 to 483 ppm (Birk and White, 1991; Seredin, 1996; Hower, Ruppert and Eble, 1999; Blissett, Smalley and Rowson, 2014). The occurrence of REEs in coal and coal byproducts can be classified into three types: (1) rare earth minerals, such as monazite and xenotime, (2) ion-adsorbed REEs on clays and (3) REEs associated with organic matrices. The rare earth minerals in coal and coal byproducts are very small in particle size, generally on the micrometer and/or nanometer scales (Honaker et al., 2014). Froth flotation, which concentrates minerals based on surface chemistry differences, has been widely used to treat fine rare earth industrial minerals such as monazite, xenotime and bastnaesite (Abeidu, 1972; Cheng, Holtham and Tran, 1993; Pavez and Peres, 1994; Pavez, Brandao and Peres, 1996; Jordens et al., 2014). As such, flotation is a promising method for the concentration of rare earth minerals from coal and coal byproducts."

This chapter discusses the necessary construction techniques for installing coal mine ventilation devices. Included in the discussion are the major air controlling devices called over- casts, regulators, stoppings, and doors. Under-casts, although a valid device, are used infrequently in coal mining and are not discussed here. Typically, coal mines require a great many ventilation devices to control the air movement. Post-I969 mines have had to design their air systems to comply with the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (CMHSA) as discussed in Chap. 1. Pre- 1969 mines have had to redesign major portions of their systems to comply with the basic components of the law such as separation of air courses, single unit split ventilation, and minimum air quantities. It is not uncommon, therefore, to find a large mine (2.0 Mt/a) requiring several hundred overcast installations (permanent, as well as repeat construction), plus doors and regulators placed among a thousand or more stoppings. When each of these devices is subject to leakage from installation and weathering defects, the importance of effective construction becomes evident. An historic rule of thumb for average mine ventilation says that about 70% of all the air pressure generated by the mine fan is lost between the portal and the working faces. Of course, this rule is subject to many factors, but the message is clear: there is a tremendous inefficiency in controlling leakage through common air devices. This chapter strives to present a standard approach and design alternatives which can go a long way in reducing this leakage, and hence, ventilation costs. Historically, mine ventilation has progressed from natural, or draft ventilation, to fire-induced ventilation (Fig. l), furnace-fired centrifugal fans and finally, to today's modem mine fans. Underground controlling devices have been in use in the coal mines since the late 1600s, but the CMHSA of 1969 was the real turning point for mine ventilation. Minimum quantities and velocities of fresh air were required for mining, forcing coal operators and engineers to reevaluate and improve their systems. As a consequence, the cost for ventilating air increased. Today, companies face a variety of choices among design alternatives, materials, labor, and costs of ventilating devices for their mines. The best approach for any individual company or mine is determined by (1) the needs of the mine, and (2) the local design parameters. In my discussions of ventilation construction I shall be fairly general in terms of device installation steps, where specifics are warranted for clarification, I will include this information.

A longwall coal mine in southwestern Virginia mining the Pocahontas #3 Coal Seam experienced a history of mining-related seismic events. The events were never large enough to cause concern until three major events occurred recording 3.4, 4.3, and 3.4 ML in 2005, 2006, and 2007 respectively. Two of the seismic events generated an air blast which damaged stoppings which fueled a mine fire in 2005 and 2007. The mine responded to the events by narrowing the longwall widths, changing ventilation controls, installing a 7-sensor seismic system around the active panel, and creating a mining hazard map to avoid similar geology in the future. All of the actions taken have prevented seismic activity from impacting mining operations, but it did not prevent other large seismic events from occurring (Van Dyke et al., 2018). In 2016, another large seismic event, measured at 3.7 ML, occurred in the gob that was reported by the local media and recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). While the event did not directly impact mining operations, mine management wanted to know where and under what conditions could large seismic events occur in the future. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) became involved to help understand what conditions precipitated these events so that future mine design could more accurately assess seismic hazards and reduce the risk to mine worker safety. Researchers at NIOSH and mine management created a seismic forecasting map that combined three factors: (1) overburden thickness, (2) sandstone thickness, and (3) the expected caving height of the gob. The criteria were developed based on the geologic data the mine collected from core drilling, e-log analysis, and fiberscope observations. The forecast map was able to provide an accuracy of 72%–85% of events 1.5 ML or greater and 100% accuracy of events that were 3.0 ML or greater based on historical data. The seismic forecasting map was applied to the entire future mining area to show areas where seismic potential could be the greatest based on current mine design planning, ultimately improving the ability of the mine operator to assess the seismic hazards surrounding active and future mining areas (Van Dyke et al. 2018). Following this research, the seismic forecasting map was implemented into the mine’s hazard recognition program and is continuously updated and evaluated prior to mining each longwall panel. This paper will cover in more detail how the seismic and lithologic data was processed and how the mine implemented a new seismic mitigation program based on the forecasting results.

"With the background of water shortages and serious water pollution, issues of water involved in energy exploration and utilization have become critical problems affecting urban water usage. In order to identify the relationships of the energy-water nexus, this paper characterizes the energy-water nexus literature using a bibliometric method and based on the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure database platform. The results reveal that 1) Scientific outcomes in this field have increased sharply since 2003, with a slightly higher growth rate than that of general disciplines. 2) China Water Resources, Yangtze River and Express Water Resources & Hydropower Information are the dominant journals, and the main research fields include industrial economics, environmental science, and management, among other disciplines. 3) Hohai University, the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, and the Changjiang Water Resources Commission are the main research institutions in this field. However, the proportion of publications of these institutions is not high, which suggests that there is no institution dominating this field. 4) According to the keyword analysis, the hot spots in this field include ecological environment, sustainable development, environmental protection, climate change, etc. Energy-mining related keywords have increased over time, implying that the energy-water nexus from the perspective of the energy exploitation industry can become a key issue. At the same time, the frequency of keywords related to sustainable development has been maintained at a high level, and the studies concerned with the impacts of climate change were introduced into this field relatively late. The conclusion of this study provides a foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the current situation as well as for further research in the energy-water nexus field.Introduction As an important strategic resource for national economic and social sustainable development, water has been increasingly focused on by the Chinese Government. Over the next decade, the total water demand of China will continue to grow steadily, which lead to a significant trend of increasing water consumption in the future (Zhang 2013). To reasonably exploit, utilize, conserve and protect water resources, the Water Law of the People's Republic of China was enacted by the members of the 9th National People's Congress Standing Committee in 1988 and after multiple revisions, the latest of which, in September 1, 2016, has involved water infrastructures in the national economic and social development plans of the government at all levels and regulated the rationale for water engineering construction. Thus, in the context of serious water shortages and water pollution, China’s government has taken several measures to make rational use of water resources."

Mining-related wastes, which are increasing, are being utilized more and more as valuable resources in Virginia. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) divides mining-related wastes into two categories: those generated from mineral extraction and beneficiation and those generated from mineral processing. Materials from both categories are produced in Virginia, where waste (by-product) materials are present at a variety of mining sites and processing plants; some of which have been exploited for various uses in the past and/or present. These materials include: used concrete recycled for roadbase material; pyrite coated with magnetite for use in portland cement; minor amounts of fly ash for use in concrete block, lightweight aggregate, and flowable structural fills; granite and diabase quarry fines for use as agricultural and asphalt filler; lime kiln dust for use in neutralizing and stabilizing coal refuse; soapstone aggregate for use in terrazzo heat retention panels; kaolin for use as a filler product and as an ingredient in white cement; slate quarry fines used as landcover and combined with aggregate for crusher run and as a filler in asphalt; and coal refuse for use as fuel in a lightweight aggregate plant. There are some materials available that have never been utilized, although several ideas were investigated to turn them into usable commodities. One such material is a high-alumina scrap produced as a by-product at a ferrovanadium processing plant. However, large quantities of waste materials from metal mining, industrial mineral, and fossil fuel operations remain to be disposed of in an environmentally safe and economic manner. In 1989, almost one million tons of fly ash were produced from burning of coal at eight coal-fired power plants in Virginia. Present uses for this waste such as an ingredient in concrete block, concrete aggregate, and in structural fills cannot dispose of all the available material; however, increased use of fly ash as a soil/rock substitute for structural fills and embankments may solve the problem of its disposal. Another waste material is calcium carbonate precipitate paste produced at a lithium carbonate processing plant and presently being used for back filling an on-site inactive underground limestone mine. Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastes in the form of CaS04 will probably increase threefold. If this material contains a minimum of 95 percent gypsum and negligible chloride, it may have a value to a wallboard manufacturer as we move toward the year 2000. Thought must be given how this increasing waste can be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.

In the past mining engineers have tended to rely heavily on the advice of fan manufacturers in relation to fan equipment issues. A more adequate approach was advocated in a paper [ Wallis, 1965 ] submitted to the Eighth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress held at Surfers Paradise, Australia during 1965. At that time Mount Isa Mine were in the process of installing 3 large 6096mm (20ft) diameter vertical axial flow surface fans of an advanced type [ Mathews et al, 1967 ]. The preliminary feasibility studies prior to preparing the detailed job specification for this project were extremely thorough with the result that it was possible to include detailed information and instructions in the document, ensuring the procurement of equipment that was satisfactory in all respects. Full advantage was taken of expert services provided by external organizations during the large coordinated multi-disciplinary exercise. My continuing activity and development in relation to the technology of axial flow fans is now at a stage where all known design and performance data are accessible through CAD programs [ Wallis and Kipp, 1987 ]. The extensive calculations that were necessary in 1983 can now be carried out in a mere fraction of the time, and with complete confidence. Model testing in order to validate the fan and duct design proposals is, in my view, no longer essential. The first of the computer programs enables a mine ventilation engineer to study a large number of alternative axial fan arrangements for comparison with the centrifugal alternative. By entering the volume flow rate, fan pressure and air density, he can then with ease, and rapidly, investigate the effect of various blading arrangements, downstream evasee area ratios, and hub ratios, on fan diameter and speed, with their related attainable fan efficiencies. This procedure had its origin back in the 60s when I was advising mining companies on new fan equipment. At that time such an investigation was quite lengthy and lacked the precision and completeness that is now available within the present programs. To obtain the major benefit from these outputs, it is most important not to be disconcerted by the three very important nondimensional parameters, namely, the tip flow coefficient (LAMt), the fan pressure coefficient (Kt or Kit), and the swirl coefficient (Es and/or Ep) as these are important when assessing the various design proposals. When seeking an understanding of the role and importance of each of these variables, ample help is provided in the user manual; the design recommendations are summarized in the help screens which are readily accessible within the design programs.

THE PENETRATION RATE BASELINE DILEMMA The penetration rate is the instantaneous advance rate of a TBM in a rock tunnel. Normally expressed in feet per hour. The production rate is the penetration rate multiplied by the number of hours worked and then factored by the actual utilization of the TBM. In a given rock formation, the actual production rate is a result of many factors some of which are within the control of the contractor and some of which are based on the route selected. Factors that are within the contractors control are cutter profile, frequency of cutter changes, thrust, rotation speed, cutter spacing and the efficiency of the operation. Factors that are site (route) specific are compressive strength, fracture orientation, fracture frequency, micro- fracturing, quartz content, Moh’s hardness, Cerchar Abrasivity Brazilian Tensile Strength and Youngs Modulus of the rock. In addition the following route speci?c conditions are beyond the contractors control; rockjointing, rock stress fault zones, water in?ow and rock decomposition; all of which effect production rate. Any one of the above defined rock properties, equipment specifications and actual operating usage will change the penetration rate. Furthermore, since the rock formation changes both in content and orientation as the tunnel advances, the penetration rate is constantly varying. The current industry practice in bidding tunnels is for each contractor to individually evaluate the rock hardness and other properties and from this information develop a penetration rate. All other factors being equal, the contractor using the most optimistic penetration rate will be the low bidder and be awarded the project. As this view is by definition optimistic, invariably the rock will be harder than the low bid assessment and the contractor will request additional compensation for the changed condition. The contractor will attempt to justify his optimistic assessment as reasonable by using expert supporting analysis. The above described example which is quite common at present in the industry tends to make the most optimistic contractor (at time of bidding) the contractor selected for the project whereas it is in the owners interest to contract with the most efficient contractor not the most optimistic. This situation is similar to the Geotechnical analysis that was prevalent in the industry over twenty years ago. Many projects have experienced a significant reduction of penetration rate from that which was originally estimated. In these cases the contractor often makes a claim for extra compensation based on the difference between the actual rock encountered

"Built in 1940’s to provide a key roadway arterial between New York and Boston, the Heroes Tunnel is the only highway rock tunnel in the state of Connecticut and is part of the Wilbur Cross Parkway. This 365.0 m long tunnel consists of two barrels, each with two lanes of traffic, and carries over 71,000 vehicles per day. For nearly 70 years, the tunnel has seen millions of vehicles pass through but time has taken its toll and now the tunnel lining, ventilation system and radial section joints are significantly deteriorated and in need of rehabilitation. Owned and maintained by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), CTDOT initiated a unique managed approach to mitigate the risk, social impacts and financial implications associated with rehabilitation of this tunnel. This new approach consists of performing field inspection and conducting a comprehensive study to explore six rehabilitation options, including construction of new tunnels and enlarging the existing tunnels. The main criteria for this study are: Impact on traffic and the resulting delay cost; Construction cost; Construction duration; and Construction complexity. This paper will present the results of the alternative study. PROJECT BACKGROUND Location and Importance Heroes Tunnel is located in the State of Connecticut within the Town of Woodbridge and the City of New Haven near the Town of Hamden border. Heroes Tunnel is the only true highway tunnel in the State of Connecticut. The tunnel is part of the Wilbur Cross Parkway (Route 15), a scenic connection between Hartford and New York. Originally constructed and opened to traffic in 1949, the tunneled portion of the parkway passes through the West Rock Ridge. The tunnel was originally named West Rock Tunnel, but was re-designated as Heroes Tunnel in 2003. Route 15 is a vital roadway within the State transportation infrastructure. In the vicinity of Heroes Tunnel, Route 15 carries approximately 71,000 vehicles daily. Locally, Route 15 provides access to residences, shopping centers, and points of interest, as well as other state roadways. Regionally, Route 15 connects New York to the Hartford area and serves as an alternate expressway route to I-95 and I-91. The tunnel is approximately 365.0 m long and passes through the West Rock Ridge. West Rock Ridge is an 11.3 km long rock ridge located on the west side of New Haven. A network of suburban streets abuts the mountain on all sides and a seasonal paved park road climbs to the crest of the ridge. Figure 1 depicts the tunnel topography and location."

BACKGROUND Diesel exhaust is an animal carcinogen, although evidence of the carcinogenicity in humans is "limited". (World Health Org. , 1989) Of the eight cohort studies in the 19808, five found an increased risk for lung cancer among workers who may have been exposed to diesel exhaust (RR from 1.3-1.5, SMR from 101-132). (Howe, et al., 1983) Only two studies accounted for smoking indirectly. Of the ten case-control studies in the 1980's, eight reported increased risk of lung cancer among those populations purportedly exposed to diesel exhaust. (Benhamou, et al. , 1988) All but one of these adjusted for smoking and other occupational exposures. The odds ratios ranged from 1.2 to 2.1. In two of these studies, miners experienced a two to three fold risk. (Benhamou, et al., 1988) Bladder cancer has also been linked to diesel exhaust in cohort and case-control studies. Excesses of approximately 50% were observed among truck drivers in studies by NCI. (Hoar, et al., 1985) In the National Bladder Cancer Study, risks for truck drivers rose with duration of employment. A study by NIOSH in Ohio also found an excess of bladder cancer among truck drivers, particularly among those with 20 or more years of employment. (Steenland, et al, 1987) Despite the large number of studies in which the relation between diesel exhaust exposure and lung cancer has been examined, exposure to diesel exhaust has been quantitatively estimated only in the studies of railroad workers and truck drivers. (Woskie, et al., 1988) The excess lung cancer risk experienced by workers in these two occupational groups was modest, ranging from 40 to 90% for those with long-term employment. However, diesel exhaust exposure among railroad workers and truck drivers is lower than that seen among miners. Several markers of diesel exhaust have been utilized in these studies. Diesel exhaust is a complex mixture of particulates, vapors and gases. One group of these gases, the nitrogen oxides, react with polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, forming mutagenic and possible carcinogenic nitrated derivatives. (World Health Organization, 1989) For this reason, and because it is easy to measure and analyze, NO, was frequently used as a marker of diesel exhaust exposure. As part of the Garshick (Garshick, et al., 1988) study of railroad workers, Woskie measured NO, exposures of 477 railroad workers. (Woskie, et al., 1988) Geometric mean exposures of 13 job groups ranged from 12 to 80 ppb. In a New Mexico potash mine, (Attfield, et al. , 1982) exposures of from 100 to 3300 ppb nitrogen dioxide

INTRODUCTION The continuous mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners which were designed for increased productivity have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. Inhalation of this respirable dust by miners causes the Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Concern for CWP increased in the United States following a 1963-65 survey that showed definite x-ray evidence of CWP in 9.8 percent of working miners and in 18.2 percent of nonworking miners in the Appalachian bituminous coal region (Breslin and Niewiadomski, 1982). One of the major objectives of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was the prevention of CUP. This law initially limited the daily average exposure of coal miners to 3 mg/m3 of respirable dust. However, following the results of a probabilistic model developed by Jacobsen, et. al. in 1971, the limit was reduced to a mass concentration of 2 mg/m3 unless quartz content exceeds 5 percent, a rare occurrence in mines. Based on x-ray categorization prior to death it is believed that the mass concentration in the respirable fraction is a parameter of primary interest for hygenic evaluation of dust exposure. Elorgan, Burgess and Jacobson (1973) suggested that the quantity of inhaled dust, although influential is not the only aspect of exposure which is significant in producing CWP. Miners working in higher rank coal (anthracite) mines are more susceptible to CWP (Morgan, Burgess and Jacobson, 1973). This also confirms the findings of the British (Bennett, Dick and Kaplan, 1979 and Hurley, et. al., 1979) and Germany (Reisner and Rubock, 1977). Based on the cy to toxicological evidence Reisner and Rubock (1979) suggested that when coal properties are similar, increasing quartz and mineral content increases toxicity. David, Ottery and Le ?oux (1975) examined that as the severity of the CWP increased the retention of the coal dust content in the pulmonary region remained the same, while that of quartz content increased significantly . Leiteritz, Baur and Bruckman (1971) studied the various components of coal dust and showed that coal particles comprised a smaller fraction of the mass of fine dust than did particles , of quartz and minerals. It is ironic that quartz and mineral matter both comprise smaller fractions of the higher rank coal dust (Dodgson, et. al., 1971 and Dwiggins, 1981). "Longwall mining has a significant influence on gas wells located within longwall chain pillars. Subsurface subsidence and abutment pressure induced by longwall mining can cause excessive stresses and deformations in gas well casings. If the gas well casings are compromised or ruptured, natural gas could migrate into the mine workings, potentially causing a fire or explosion. By the current safety regulations, the gas wells in the chain pillars have to be either plugged or protected by adequate coal pillars. The current regulations for the gas well pillar design are based on the 1957 Pennsylvania gas well pillar study. The study provided guidelines for gas well pillars by considering their support area and overburden depth as well as the location of the gas wells within the pillars. As the guidelines were developed for room-and-pillar mining under shallow cover, they are no longer applicable to modern longwall mining, particularly under deep cover. Gas well casing failures have occurred even though the chain pillars for the gas wells met the requirements by the 1957 study.This study presents seven cases of conventional gas wells penetrating through longwall chain pillars in the Pittsburgh coal seam. The study indicates that overburden depth and pillar size are not the only determining factors for gas well stability. The other important factors also include subsurface ground movement, overburden geology, and weak floor, as well as the construction of gas wells. Numerical modeling was used to model abutment pressure, subsurface deformations, and the response of gas well casings. The study demonstrated that numerical models are able to predict with reasonable accuracy the subsurface deformations in the overburden above, within, and below the chain pillars, and the potential location and modes of gas well failures, therefore providing a more quantifiable approach to assess the stability of the gas wells in longwall chain pillars.INTRODUCTIONIn the eastern United States, abundant gas wells have been drilled through coal seams that are being actively mined by longwall mining. The existence of gas wells in the U.S. coal fields, whether active or abandoned, have caused many issues for longwall mining. First of all, any gas well in the mining area has to be located by all possible means. Secondly, the gas wells within longwall panels have to be plugged, as cutting through gas wells will allow natural gas to flow into the active longwall mines. On the other hand, the gas wells within longwall chain pillars or barrier pillars can be left in place if the wells are protected by properly designed pillars."

Feldspars have major uses in glass manufacture and in ceramic products. About 6 million metric tons (6.6 million short tons) are used annually. Feldspars are desirable because of their high aluminum and alkali contents. Na feldspars are favored for glass, while K feldspar is often preferred in the pottery and tile industries. Economic deposits occur in a variety of geological environments. Most are in granites or granite-like bodies, pegmatites being a common source worldwide. Alkali granites, particularly those some- times called alaskites, are mined directly as a source of feldspar and associated minerals. Some other igneous bodies, such as aplites, rhyolites, and partly altered granites (for example china stone) provide alternative feldspar-rich products. Nepheline syenites and phonolites are other sources of feldspar and contain higher amounts of alkalis. Feldspar-rich (arkosic) sediments derived from the weathering of pegmatites and granites are widely extracted and processed for use in ceramics. The present study reviewed the various sources of feldspars throughout the world. Data on the quality of products has been taken from literature, and samples have been obtained from a large number of producers. The mineralogy and chemistry of the samples has been determined and, as far as possible, have been related to the geology of the source area. Feldspar products show a wide range of chemical and mineralogical compositions. Some are pure Na feldspar (albite), others are made up entirely of K feldspar (microline and orthoclase), but many are mixtures of Na and K feldspars. Significant quantities of quartz are often present, and many products contain mica and kaolinite. Fe203 con- tents are very low, typically less than 0.1 percent. Detailed mineralogical studies show that four groups of products can be recognized on the basis of feldspar mineralogy. These are albite, albite with microcline, microcline with orthoclase, and orthoclase with albite. Products containing microcline and orthoclase together are mostly sedimentary in origin. Those with albite only, or albite with microcline have a pegmatitic or granite origin. Those containing orthoclase as the dominant K feldspar are derived from aplites or rhyolites. There does not appear to be any relationship between the feldspar mineralogy and the quartz content. Peraluminous S- type granites and pelite-dominated high-grade metamorphic rocks, in which there is a significant volatile component, are likely to be the most important feldspar sources. Partial kaolinization of feldspar-containing rocks often improves minability, decreases crushing costs, reduces iron content, and increases the K2O/Na2O ratio.

"The ecological costs related to the various optimized production schemes were calculated based on the designed ultimate pit. Moreover, the influence of the ecological costs on the selection of production schemes was discussed. In one designed pit, a series of geologically optimum pushbacks with sufficiently small increment were produced using the floating cone method founded on the principle of the highest metal content. Then all the pushbacks were reordered by the dynamic network diagram. The production scheme with the maximum NPV route was considered as the optimum one. The ecological impacts produced by mining were quantified and the ecological cost calculation models, which contain the direct eco-value loss, the indirect eco-value loss, the eco-restoration cost and the carbon emission cost were proposed. In one big open pit mine case, various production schemes were optimized and the one with maximum NPV was selected without taking into account the eco-costs. The scheme with the maximum comprehensive profit was obtained by calculating the eco-cost of each scheme. The results showed that the best scheme considered with the eco-cost was not the scheme with the maximum NPV. Therefore, the eco-cost presents the effect on the selection of the best production scheme.Introduction Optimizing production scheme is to determine the mining quantities of ore and rock, the pushing position of stope each year, and maximize the NPV of mine. In the theory, production scheming optimization has gone through trial and error (Pana and Carlson 1966), linear programming method (Johnson 1968), mixed integer programming (Gershon 1983), integer mapping (Kim and Cai 1990), dynamic programming et al (Gu et al 2014). In recent years, the study on production scheduling optimization has been focused on two aspects. On the one hand, the study is to solve the investment risk caused by the uncertainties of economic and geological environment (Ramazan and Dimitrakopoulos 2013, Marcotte and Caron 2010, Lamghari and Dimitrakopoulos 2012, Godoy and Dimitrakopoulos 2004, Benndorf and Shishvan 2014). On the other hand, the emphasis of the study was on reducing the problems for the optimization algorithm, to make it more efficient and practical (Cullenbine et al 2011, Shishvan and Sattarvand 2015, Askari-Nasab et al 2011, Nasab et al 2010). However, different production schemes cause different damage of mine land and pollutant emission, thus triggering environment problem. With the improvement of people’s consciousness of environment protection, the environmental issue of mining has been attracting more and more attention."

Introduction The Summitville Mine located in southwestern Colorado was added to the National Priorities List in June of 1994. Summitville was the site of mining operations that began in 1873 with the discovery and development of gold placer and lode deposits in the late 1800's. The mine site is located about 25 miles south of Del Norte, Colorado in the San Juan Mountains adjacent to the Rio Grande National Forest at an approximate altitude of 11,600 feet. The site was mined for gold, silver and copper between 1873 and 1947. The Summitville Consolidated Mining Corporation, Inc. (SCMCI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Galactic Resources, Ltd of Vancouver, Canada ran a large tonnage open-pit mine and cyanide heap leach operation from 1986 to 1992 (Pendleton and Posey, 1992) During the mine operation by SCMCI, approximately 10 million tons of gold ore was mined, crushed and stacked on a lined leach pad. Heap leach operations experienced water balance and unplanned solution discharges from the start of the mine life. Despite the production of 249,000 troy ounces of gold during the mine operation, SCMCI was unable to meet remedial requirements and notified the state of Colorado of its intention to file a Chapter VII bankruptcy in December 1992. The EPA Region VIII Emergency Response Branch took over site operations on December 16, 1992 to prevent a catastrophic release of hazardous substances to the environment. The multiple contamination sources at the mine site are due to both historic and SCMCI mining operations. Emergency response operations at the site have prevented releases of severely contaminated solution and a permanent treatment for all waste units at the site is under investigation. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was issued in October 1993 by Environmental Chemical Corporation (ECC) at the Request of EPA Region VIII, Department of the Interior and Bureau of Reclamation. The RFP requested that interested companies provide information on their ability to implement innovative treatment technologies to improve treatment efficiency and reduce treatment costs for remediation of the heap leach pad (HLP) spent ore and ore leachate solutions. Dames & Moore and Pintail Systems, Inc. (PSI) jointly submitted a proposal suggesting application of biotreatment processes for detoxification of cyanide in spent ore and HLP leachate solutions. The proposal was accepted for pilot and field demonstration under the SPA Superfund Innovative Technology Demonstration Program (SITE) with additional funding from EPA Region VIII. This report discusses the test program and results of a Focused Feasibility Study which demonstrated biotreatment processes for spent ore cyanide detoxification.

The increasing volume of wastes being generated by industry is a legacy of the industrial revolution and subsequent industrial growth. Social and regulatory pressures have been mounting on industry to improve its waste management practices. In many industrial sectors, waste disposal has been the only method of waste management. Land farming, underground burial, deep wells and incineration are still practiced. Often, concentration and volume reduction of waste streams are also practiced to reduce the waste management costs. In the recent years, there has been emphasis on waste minimization. Since the 19th century, industry has practiced recycling of usable resources as a way of handling unwanted byproducts. The mining industry has recovered or extracted economic minerals from tailings for decades. For example, during the gold rush period of 1970s, extraction of gold from tailings dams became economically attractive. Similarly, when it was economical, coal and shale fractions have also been recovered from tailings and refuge materials for commercial uses. In the steel industry, with the development of new furnace technology, recycling of flue dust and scrap iron was practiced as early as in the 19th century. Before 1900, there was little incentive for the industry to reduce the waste volumes. Manufacturers, however, did see a rationale for adopting profit-increasing techniques. They made an effort to recover and recycle economic materials from waste sources. One of the pioneering examples of resource recovery is the coke making industry. As the industry was market driven, products recycled from coke batteries included ammonia for use in fertilizers, gas for power generation and heating, and tar for road construction, wood preservation and roofing. Tar had been avery troublesome waste byproduct. But it quickly became a valuable chemical raw material, providing the foundation for Germany's dominance of the world's dye and medicine markets before World War I. Similar trends evolved in the chemical industry. In the context of current environmental regulations and escalating mining and processing costs, recycling of re- [ ] sources is becoming economically more attractive. Solid and liquid wastes generated by industries contain a range of inorganic and organic contaminants. Among these contaminants, metals and hydrocarbons form major groups. Treatment of these wastes is essential to meet regulatory disposal requirements. In the recent years, based on the principles of chemical and mineral process engineering, processes have been developed to treat these industrial wastes. This article reviews some of the processes that have made impacts and have proven to be effective at commercial scales.

"INTRODUCTION The Jefferson Barracks Tunnel is in the final stages of design and is expected to go out to bid in the summer of 2016. The project is located in south St. Louis County along the west bank of the Mississippi River, about 13 km downstream of the St. Louis Gateway Arch. The project consists of a deep sanitary sewer tunnel, a deep pump station and several intakes. The intakes will divert sanitary flows into the tunnel and the tunnel will convey the flows by gravity to the Lemay No. 3 Pump Station, which will pump them up into the Lemay Waste Water Treatment Plant. The tunnel is about 5.4 km long and will be lined with 84-inch (2.1 m) fiberglass pipe. It drops at a gradient of 0.1 percent from south to north and will be bored through strong limestone using a hard-rock tunnel boring machine (TBM). The diameter of the TBM is anticipated to be about 3.4 m. The Owner’s original concept was for a relatively shallow tunnel so as to minimize construction and pumping costs. The preferred alignment ran close to the river, next to the existing force main, which was to be abandoned. Keeping the tunnel close to the force main would reduce the amount of shallow sewer work needed to connect the existing feeder sewers to the new tunnel. Several geotechnical investigations were performed, with shallowly focused geophysics and the borings all going exactly down the conceptual tunnel depth. Limestone bluffs run along the Missouri side of the river. These bluffs are pockmarked by sinkholes and riddled with karst. Large, well-known caves occur both north and south of the alignment. Karst features, including deep crevices and possible caves, were found in those early geotechnical investigations. Many of these features extended well below the level of the Mississippi River and would have been encountered by the tunnel. If a large crevice or cave were encountered, then the inflow of mud and water into the tunnel could have been large and possibly uncontrollable. Something had to be done to mitigate this situation. Pre-excavation grouting was considered, but the program would have been huge and extremely expensive. Using a closed-face TBM with bolted and gasketed lining was also considered, but that too was both risky and extremely expensive. The Owner could have abandoned the tunnel altogether and built a new force main, but that would have brought a whole new set of problems and was undesirable to the Owner. The last option was to move the tunnel away from the karst."

"As mine operators continuously look for ways to improve functionality and increase capacity of their facilities, existing process equipment is often pushed to and past its designed limitations. As a result, equipment manufacturers are asked for economical solutions to meet redefined processing needs. Newmont USA (Newmont) in Nevada was faced with such a need in their Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) train. In a collaborative effort between Newmont and Derrick Corporation, tests were conceived to assess the viability of drop in replacement screen using a three dimensional screen panel. The urethane pyramid screen panel was designed to increase flux while maintaining the existing equipment footprint. The test is the end result of an ongoing research and development project that Derrick undertook in an effort to refine and upgrade their urethane screening media. The application of this new screening media is presented for this CIL application along with future plans to implement the technology in trash, safety, carbon dewatering, carbon sizing, and other scalping applications.INTRODUCTION In Spring of 2014, Process Machinery Associates (PMA), Derrick Corporation’s (Derrick) local area representative, met with Newmont USA (Newmont) to discuss the operation of the in tank screens in the carbon in leach (CIL) train at Twin Creeks, near Golconda, Nevada. The process was originally designed for 13,000 +tons per day (tpd) but has been steadily rising since the plant was commissioned and now Newmont requires 16,000 tpd to be processed. The original screens were running at their maximum capacity and Newmont required additional screening capacity to continue the upward trend in production. Physical separation by use of screening is one of mineral processing oldest methods. Screening media can be prone to blinding and pegging and the necessary support structures required for finer apertures result in smaller open areas. Therefore, more screening area generally requires larger panels and therefore larger machines, screening media that doesn’t blind, or a combination of both. In an effort to avoid larger machines, Derrick Corporation had been working on a revolutionary three dimensional panel which would add non blinding screen area in the same footprint of an existing machine. Alpha testing of the new screen panels began at Newmont Mill 2/5 (Carlin, Nevada) in July of 2013 and was still occurring when PMA approached Twin Creeks about beta testing a refined machine and pyramid panel. After presenting the initial results, Twin Creeks determined that an upgraded machine and pyramid panels would be a possible solution to meet production needs. The testing of a machine eliminated the risk of capital costs to Newmont and provided Derrick the opportunity to obtain additional data."

"INTRODUCTION Typical grinding electrification requirements are defined by high power, constant torque and slow speed. Dual pinion mills also include a need for tight tolerances in torque between the two motors, to avoid overloading any single motor. Standard induction (asynchronous) motors have often been used but only in combination with mechanical gearboxes (reducers), required to reduce process speed to the correct level for mill pinions. The gearbox introduces added system complexity, capital cost, maintenance and energy cost due to mechanical losses. SYNCHRONOUS AND ASYNCHRONOUS MOTORS Elimination of the gearbox requires a motor designed to operate at a very low speed (rpm). Traditionally, mill motor requirements were best served by synchronous motors. The benefits of synchronous motors include- • Higher Efficiency (no conductor losses in rotor) • Very high power at low speed • Flexible Power factor (leading or lagging) • Constant speed (not load dependent) • More accurate speed control Synchronous motor cost is higher due to construction complexity, need for exciter and excitation panel, brushes, brush lifters. Figure 1 represents the equivalent circuit for a synchronous motor.Asynchronous motors, also known as squirrel cage induction motors, are singly excited, per Figure 2, the resulting equivalency circuit is less complex and only in need of a single voltage source.Commonly, a DC voltage supply is connected to the rotor (both physically and electrically) via brushes. The DC voltage enables the production of flux in a single direction. The brushes are connected to rings. The slip rings encircle the rotor but are insulated from the rotor. The slip rings are connected to a rotor winding known as a field winding. On large motors, brushless exciters are often used. A brushless exciter is a small AC generator whose field circuits are mounted on the stator and armature circuits are mounted on the rotor shaft. The exciter generator’s 3-phase output is rectified to DC by a 3-phase rectifier (mounted on the shaft) and fed into the main DC field circuit. It is possible to adjust the field current on the main machine by controlling the small DC field current of the exciter generator (located on the stator). [1] Brushless synchronous motors are often preferred over the traditional brush design but introduce additional complexity to motor construction in the form of additional windings and rectifiers comprising the excitation circuit. It stands to reason that because of the additional complexity, a synchronous motor will be higher in cost than an equally rated asynchronous induction machine."

"Mineral deposits require substantial amounts of energy to transport and be processed into useable form, and as such present a real processing challenge in that the deposits are never homogeneous and ore body compositional characteristics are all over the map! Extracting the desired mineral(s) from the deposit at sufficient profit margin, despite severe fluctuations in market price, requires process automation architecture capable of supporting an integrated enterprise solution. Such an architecture will encompasses the activities of individuals, process units, process areas, plant level activities, mine management and business planning and accounting systems. Key to the automation process is the aspect of value generation. This paper brings together the various requirements for the automation of a mining enterprise and presents the different aspects of how to obtain value across the entire mining operation.INTRODUCTIONMinerals’ processing sites are historically long lived, 20 year life of mine is not uncommon and 75 years is not unheard of. Considering that hardware technology advancements are introduced every six months, or less, it is prudent to select process automation systems that adhere to “open” industrial standards versus proprietary based systems. In the minerals processing industry, the key to survival is driving the cost of production per unit volume to the lowest possible level and provide enough profit to sustain operations. Control system architecture and Business information technology are rapidly becoming important tools in the quest for productivity. Getting key dynamic business performance information at the right time to the right person or process unit is crucial to successfully achieving corporate goals. The process automation architecture selected must therefore be able to integrate to the various networking enterprises and business systems.The mining industry is generally known as an “extractive” industry that is very physically-oriented with respect to operations and the activities in which workers engage. Large numbers of people performing manual tasks in difficult surroundings, produce very variable outputs. But, times are changing – and so are industry best practices. While the nature of work still consists of activities such as ore extraction, ore movement, ore concentration, refinement and logistics, automation innovations are starting to change the nature of many of the production steps. The industry has transitioned from requiring more physical activities by workers, to more information management, automated control and collaboration within the operation. Humans are good at situational intervention and non-linear reasoning and do best when empowered with an overall production perspective. Machines and automation are good at repetitive functions, steady state operation, and managing transitions. Thus, a combination of advanced technology solutions, reliable and useful information and full human contribution are necessary to mining operations for value generation."
