Rio Tinto Minera, S.A. operates in Southern Spain, at one of the most ancient mining sites in the world, using advanced computerised mine planning. This paper describes the development and application of the mine planning systems to the copper and gold/silver operations. It briefly covers the hardware configuration, and the advantages and improvements in mine planning achieved. The system's application started with the long term mine planning of Cerro Colorado (open pit) copper mine and was gradually extended to cater for the medium and short term planning requirements of the other operations of the Company. The base of the system is a mineral inventory established by the combined use of the geology and geostatistical methods, and compatible with the mine planning requirements. The planning system has three major components: one used for open pit design and long term mine planning, another used for blast evaluation and finally one used for short term mine planning. Recently, a fourth component has been added to the system for reconciliation between predicted and actual tonnages and grades. There is common data file transfer throughout the system.

My comments today are directed toward western coal and its impact on Burlington Northern. I will be discussing three major topics. These are: location and extent of mining activities, the flows of this coal traffic into the various market territories, and finally the interaction of this western coal with coals found in the balance of the United States. When we at BN speak of western coal, we refer to those substantial deposits lying in southeastern Montana and north-eastern Wyoming. This territory covers many different coal formations. For the sake of simplicity, I will be referring to this general area as the Powder River Basin (or the "western" coal fields). This slide highlights the area overlayed by a map of the BN rail system. The U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates the demonstrated reserve base of Montana and Wyoming to be approximately 176 billion tons. Of this figure, about 73 billion tons is minable by surface methods. This is roughly 72% of the total strippable reserves in the western united states, BN does not have sole access to this coal for there are deposits in southern Wyoming near the union pacific railroad. I will say more about this later.

The research laboratory of B.U.S Engitec has identified and patented a new process for electrolytic production of lead from lead sulphide concentrates with simultaneous production of elementary sulphur. The process occurs in an aqueous solution, at atmospheric pressure, utilizing a solution of ferric fluoroborate in fluoroboric acid as the oxidizing and solubilizing medium for lead sulphide. After the filtration and separation of a residue composed of elementary sulphur and the gangue which accompanied the concentrate, the solution containing lead as fluoroborate and iron reduced to a ferrous state is sent to a diaphragm electrolytic cell where, in the cathode compartment, the lead is deposited in a compact form on the stainless steel permanent blank. The exhaust solution stripped of lead is sent to the anode compartment where the oxidation of ferrous fluoroborate into ferric fluoroboratetakes place, reproducing the oxidizing solution for new leaching. Depending on operating conditions, it is possible to selectively solubilize the lead from the other metal values present in the concentrate. The sulphur produced from the reaction may be separated from the gangue by extraction with solvent or by flotation.

INTRODUCTION The Advisory Conference on Tunneling held in Washington, D.C. in 1970 under the auspices of the organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) forecast that $54 billion would be expended by member countries on underground construction in the 1970s. Construction activity since the Conference indicates the forecast may have been conservative. Statistics in the report indicated a vast increase in tunneling projects for mass transit, hydro-electric development, railroad tunnels, sewer and sewage retention reservoirs and water tunnels. Development of equipment is required to meet the demands for high speed excavation and provide tunnel driving systems with maximum efficiency and capability to sustain high speed advance rates. BORING MACHINE CAPABILITY During the last decade, use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) has increased. Where ground conditions and limits of machine design criteria permit, circular tunnel sections are either the only section , or an alternate sections specified in the documents: a TBM is either required or is an acceptable alternate means of tunneling. Hecla Mining's Lucky Friday Mine, located beneath the town of Mullan, ID, has been shaken since the 1960s by many deep underground rock bursts. The largest rock burst carried a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter Scale. It occurred in 1969 when all of the stopes on a level approached an upper level at the same elevation. After that, a stair-step pattern was used to give the mine's levels more of an "arch." The article is an account of one of the more ferocious bursts to hit the miners of the Lucky Friday. I say "miners" instead of "mine" because I was there and it was a very personal experience for me. I had been working at the Lucky Friday for six years. During that time, I had heard and felt thousands of air blasts. In fact, in the early spring of 1986, the mine was experiencing as many as 1000 air blasts an hour, of different intensi¬ties, of course. Most of them sounded like popcorn popping. There were also a few bumps and occasionally a real boomer. That day did not seem any different

If the emission of methane into any particular area of an underground coal mine remains constant, then the calculation of ventilation requirements is relatively simple. This is also true if the ventilation system is recirculatory. However, the emission of methane into a working area can vary considerably. There is always a risk that the ventilation will not be able to dilute the emission of methane to acceptable levels, because there are often short-lived peaks of emission which are very large. The ventilation design must therefore consider what is an acceptable level of risks and calculate the airflow requirements to meet this level. The acceptable level of risk can be calculated by examining the historical variation in methane emission into the area to be ventilated. For example, consider that an acceptable level occurs when methane emission peaks only exceed the capability of the ventilation one day in twenty. Then, from the history of methane emission, it is possible to calculate the necessary ventilation requirements. This method has been used since the early 1980s for conventionally ventilated districts. This paper examines the application of this technique to districts ventilated by recirculatory ventilation.

The development of a successful restoration strategy for any drastically disturbed site is dependent upon a thorough understanding of the chemical properties of the spoils or mining wastes that need to be stabilized. The majority of revegetation research in the USA has been conducted on coal mining spoils and coal preparation wastes, and this paper will focus on these two materials and their modification for plant growth and water quality protection. Potential acidity derived from the oxidation of pyritic (FeS2) materials is the most important chemical factor that must be estimated and managed, but physical properties such as severe compaction or excessively low water holding capacity are also very limiting. Conventional soil fertility tests are very difficult to interpret for mine soils because of their tendency to extract elements from fresh, unweathered surfaces that are soluble in the extract, but not plant-available. A wide array of waste products such as sewage sludge biosolids and coal fly ash are readily available for use as mine soil amendments, but their utilization must be carefully matched against the needs of the post-mining plant community and their potential water quality impacts.

Materials related problems at mines can be big ones - like a newly completed 1 -m (3.5ft) water pipeline burst during initial filling, grinding ball consumption at double the typical norms on startup of a new semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill circuit or 30 open-pit haul trucks in the shop for new bed liners after less than a year’s service. Materials engineering provides solutions to these kinds of equipment problems by selecting good materials and designs, by trouble-shooting service failures and by maintaining high quality in vendor-furnished materials and components. Materials with good properties, correctly made and fabricated, correctly installed in mining and processing equipment, produce ore and final products reliably and efficiently. Materials engineering, applied during design phases, specification writing, and receipt and installation of materials, ensures that equipment will have the best possible shot at performing up to expectations. Good calls on materials properties - specifying state-of-art materials produced by competent manufacturers - help mine managers to reduce downtime and mining and processing costs. Materials that are improperly made or specified can make a mining operation less efficient or, possibly, uneconomical.

INTRODUCTION Los Angeles is one of the world's largest cities in area with a span of 70 km between its north and south limits. The population in the Los Angeles Basin exceeds 11 million people. Los Angeles is second only to New York City in density of U.S. urban population and it operates one of the largest city bus fleets in the world, 2,500 buses. After many years of planning and many consultants' reports, it is planned to initiate a 30 km (18.5 miles) starter line subway -- the "Wilshire Corridor" (Figure 1). Construction is to start in 1985. In several locations, subway routes ultimately will skirt or cross old oil fields, which may cause gassy tunneling. Of particular note are the La Brea Tar Pits, which overlie a part of the old Salt Lake oil field. Tunneling through tar sands for about 3 km will be unique for subway construction and will occur on the starter line. Experience with previous gassy tunnels in the greater Los Angeles area shows that tunnels can be completed safely if precautions are taken. Abundant ventilation is the main solution, although other precautions are discussed herein.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT While Holmes & Narver is better known in other fields, the company has been active in many phases of underground excavation for over twenty years. In the 1950's, H&N participated in design and construction of nearly twenty miles of waste disposal tunnels in Southern California. As Architect-Engineer for the Atomic Energy Commission, we had design and management responsibility for many miles of tunnels and for thousands of feet of exploration and big hole drilling, from coast to coast in the States, and for gas well completions and exploration drilling for the Navy and the National Science Foundation from Pt. Barrow to Byrd Station in Antarctica. In my ten years with the company, we contributed to the development of big hole drilling techniques at a number of sites and analyzed the capability of boring machines for many of the tunnel projects. As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines program to evaluate alternatives to sodium cyanide in gold leaching, three organic nitrile compounds were tested for their effectiveness as gold lixiviante. The organic compounds examined were malononitrile, acetonitrile, and cyanoacetamide. The reagents were tested on an oxide ore, two carbonaceous ores, and a eulfidic ore. Acetonitrile and cyanoacetamide were shown to be ineffective gold leachante. Malononitrile was the most successful of the organic lixiviants. On an oxide ore, malononitrile performed shilarlyto sodium cyanide with extractions of around 80 pct. For carbonaceous "preg-robbing" oree, sodium cyanide was completely ineffective while malononitrile extracted 24 pct of the gold. When using a resin-in-leach technique, extraction with sodium cyanide increased to 60 pct and the extraction with malononitrile increased to 80 pct. On the sulfide ore, sodium cyanide and malononitrile performed similarly with 80+ pct extraction as long as the pH of the malononitrile solution wae maintained above 10.5. Malononitrile is six times less toxic than sodium cyanide as measured by LD, levels. Therefore, malononitrile has a significant advantage over eodium cyanide, but its high cost and undemonstrated usefulnees make it unlikely to gain acceptance.

Ion flotation of gold is a process continuing to be developed to selectively beneficiate dilute aurocyanide liquors using a novel surface­active complexing agent. Aeration of these liquors causes accumulation of the precious metal species in the froth concentrate produced in a flotation column. Successful development of ion flotation for concentrating solids-free liquors would offer a low--cost method for recovering specific metals from heap leach runoff or waste tailings solutions. The cost of constructing and operating a 100 tph gold ion flotation facility has been compared with the relevant carbon adsorption plant costs. Reductions in operating costs of 25% and installed capital of 40% are possible in relevant expenditure areas. For an 'average' processing plant, this equates to annual operating savings of A$ 170 000 and a capital saving of A$ 515 000, with a three-point increase in total (mine and plant) site DCF ROI. High gold inventories are eliminated and the number of processing steps is reduced. The application of gold ion flotation will initially be confined to heap leach operations in the western U.S.A., although use of the process in mine abandonment programmes elsewhere is also an area of future development.

ThunderBasin Coal Co. has two mines located in the southern portion of Wyoming's Powder River Basin - the Black Thunder Mine and the Coal Creek Mine. Both are located 60 to 90 kin (37 to 55 miles) southeast of Gillette. The mines are principally located on federal coal leases acquired in the late-1960s. Development plans for the Black Thunder Mine focused on dragline stripping. Environmental considerations, however, made truck-shovel stripping the method of choice when the mine opened in 1976. In 1981, the Coal Creek Mine opened as the first dragline mine in the Gillette area of the Powder River Basin. The regional terrain is flat-lyimg with occasional clinker-capped hills. The mines are located on the Wasatch and Fort Union Formation contact. The coals are Paleocene in age. The deposits are structurally simple, dipping gently to the west. The seams are thick and are classified as sub-bituminous-C. The Black Thunder Mine, with its 21-m (70-ft) 'hick seam, is strategically located in the center of the highest heat value mining area of the southern Powder River Basin.

The number of stakeholders concerned by mining companies has grown significantly over the last few decades, and the role of local communities and civil society is now acknowledged by the mining companies adhering to the sustainable development ethics. ?Involve me? is becoming a key to maximize the returns the mining industry can provide to sustainable development. As the world?s major importer of many mineral commodities, several coming from developing countries facing severe short-term problems, the European Union (EU) is an important stakeholder and has a responsibility in supporting actions to strengthen corporate and public governance capacities. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the drivers leading to the development of sustainability indicators and to propose, within the 6th European Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities (FP6), an European-level initiative to develop sustainability indicators adapted to the mining industry and its population with relevant data.

In the recent years, the mining sector is looking for specific indices, taking into account economic, environmental and social criteria, in order to meet the sustainable development requirements. In the present study traditional and environmental sustainable indices used in the Agios Dimitrios Power Plant, Northern Greece, are compared to those of ESKOM Company, South Africa, taken as reference. These indices are referred to, a) the solid fuels consumption, such as lignite, and, b) the emissions to the atmosphere, such as SO2, NO2 and dust. Last five years data show a remarkable improvement of all indices in the Agios Dimitrios Power Plant. Although the lignite used in this Power Plant is by far of poorer quality than that used by ESKOM - net calorific value 1272 and 4638 kcal/kg, respectively - dust emissions in both Power Plants are similar (52 and 31 g/kWh, respectively). The SO2 and NO2 emissions are very low in Agios Dimitrios compared to those of South Africa, respectively 1.92 and 7.91, and 1.74 and 3.61 g/kWh. This is mainly due to natural desulfurization (by the lignite?s calcium content) and the low NOx burners.

A major concern of mine fires is the heat generated ventilation disturbances which can move products of combustion (POC) through unexpected passageways. Fire emergency planning requires simulation of the interaction of the fire and ventilation system to predict the state of the ventilation system and the subsequent distribution of temperatures and POC. Several computer models were developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) to perform this simulation. The most recent, MFIRE, simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters such as the development of new mine workings or changes in ventilation control structures, external influence such as varying outside temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. Extensive output allows quantitative analysis of the effects of the proposed alteration to the ventilation system. This paper describes recent USBM research to validate MFIRE's calculation of temperature distribution in an airway due to a mine fire, as temperatures are the most significant source of ventilation disturbances. Fire tests were conducted at the Waldo Mine near Magdalena, NM. From these experiments, temperature profiles were developed as functions of time and distance from the fire and compared with simulations from MFIRE.

GENERAL BACKGROUND The first mention of the presence of bauxite in the mesozoic series of north-west Sardinia (fig. 1) is owed to Oosterbaan, a Dutch geologist, who carried out a geological survey of the area in the ninetten thirties. A more detailed study of the mesozoic series was attempted in the fifties by Pecorini and other, who concentrated particularly upon the stratigraphy of the bauxitic horizons, through examination of the various outcrops. In the sixties a pining company, Monte Amiata S.p.A., turned its attention to a section of the deposit outcropping near Olmedo and, considering it to be of some promise, carried out prospecting works consisting essentially of various trenches, some bore holes, a few adit and a. layout plan for the preparation and execution of trial exploitation. The results, although positive, did not convince the company's shareholders to continue the exploration. This report, which is intended as a new contribution to knowledge of the Sardinian bauxite deposit, takes into account the information acquired not only from a drilling prospection begun in 1979 in connection with the SOMIT-PROGEMISA joint venture, but also the results of structural studies and numerous chemical, mineralogical and

Melissa Russell, a successful nonprofit executive with more than 30 years of experience in global association management, officially stepped into the role on Sept. 29, 2025. She succeeds longtime CEO Dave Kanagy, CAE, who is retiring in March 2026 after more than two decades of transformative leadership. “I am honored to begin this new chapter with SME and inspired by the vital role this community plays in shaping our world,” said Russell. “I look forward to listening, learning and working alongside this remarkable group of professionals to advance innovation, champion sustainability and create a brilliant future together.” Russell brings a deep portfolio of leadership experience in technical and industrial associations to SME. The use of diesel engines in underground hard-rock mines dates back to the late 1940s. For the first several years, they were used only occasionally, being limited to a few metal mines that experimented with crawler¬mounted front-end loaders, tractor-trailer hauling units, a few tractors for drill-compressor mounts, and utility cleanup machines. By the mid-1950s, track loaders had become commonplace in limestone mines and uranium mines on the Colorado Plateau in the United States, as well as in Canada. Use of crawler-mounted tractors as drill and compressor mounts also increased. By the end of the 1950s, rubber-tired loaders and some haulers began to replace the track-type machines and rail-mounted cars that had been in use. About 1960, the rubber-tired machines brought about a new era of underground mining mobility and flexibility, centered on a method commonly known as "trackless mining." Ultimately, many of the underground rail-type systems for loading and hauling were replaced by the trackless mining technique. ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS The size and nature of mineral deposits, plus ground control techniques, historically had dictated small open¬ings to the surface from many underground mines. The small mine openings led to the development of special rubber-tired loaders and haulers designed specifically for access through the small openings. However, some mines, particularly those in massive mineral deposits, are able to excavate and maintain very large openings, and some use modified room-and-pillar systems. With the large mine openings, the use of larger, more produc¬tive equipment such as that commonly found in surface mining becomes economical. In fact, productivity gen¬erally increases at a more pronounced rate than machine size increases because many of the larger machines were designed for heavy-duty shot-rock applications in surface mines and construction sites where the handling of blasted rock is common. Combining greater productivity often inherent in larger machines, with reduced downtime resulting from using fully developed machines with fast parts and service backup, some mine operators have been able to reduce material handling costs appreciably while reduc¬ing manpower requirements for operators and main¬tenance men. Large mine openings increase the amount of rock that must be handled in the development work, and they sometimes increase the dilution in stopes or rooms, de¬pending upon the dimensions of the ore zone. Providing adequate space for the unrestricted operation of large surface mining machines could, therefore, lead to more waste segregation and handling costs. It could also cause greater ore dilution that would result in a lower grade of ore being delivered to the processing plant. The tradeoffs between opposing cost factors must be reconciled and balanced to achieve the best overall cost of the crude ore, concentrates, or product. EQUIPMENT MODIFICATIONS Loaders and haulers designed for surface mining are seldom used underground in their standard con¬figurations without some modifications. If done, the modifications generally are made by the equipment dealer and/or the user, and the modifications usually include one or more of the following items: 1) The exhaust stack is lowered, and its direction is changed. Usually, it is repositioned horizontally to the rear, or it is fed into the engine fan to diffuse the exhaust gases. 2) The operator's position is lowered by either lowering the seat or changing the seat to a side mount. 3) The operator controls are adjusted to fit the new operator position. 4) Other components, such as the radiator and loader tower, are lowered. 5) Special bumper guards are mounted at the base of the radiator area. 6) An exhaust conditioner is mounted and con¬nected, using either a catalytic or a water-type condi¬tioner, or both. INTRODUCTION Proliferation and enhanced synthesis of collagen by pulmonary fibroblasts have been shown to be key steps in the development of chronic silicosis (Goldstein and Fine, 1986). The regulation of lung fibroblast proliferation by cytokines released from alveolar macrophages may be an important pathogenetic mechanism in the development of the fibrotic process (Kelley, 1990). One cytokine, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), promotes fibroblast proliferation by inducing the movement of quiescent (Go) cells into the C1 phase of the cell cycle (Chen and Rabinovitch, 1989). Others regulate the rate of transition of fibroblasts from Gl into the S phase (Leof et al., 1982). These two classes of cytokines have been termed, respectively, competence and progression factors. One approach used to examine the release of cytokines from macrophages is the fibroblast proliferation assay in which fibroblasts are exposed to culture supernatants from macrophages exposed to various stimuli. In most of these assays, the supernatant contains fetal calf serum which provides the competence factor(s) necessary to facilitate the proliferation of fibroblasts (Bitterman et al., 1982; Bitterman et al., 1983; Elias et al., 1988). Recently, a fibroblast proliferation assay using plateletpoor plasma (lacking competence factor(s)) as a substitute for fetal calf serum has been described (Kuman et al., 1988; Bauman et al., 1990). In this assay, the release of a competence-inducing PDGF-like growth factor from rat and human macrophages can be distinguished from other cytokines that act as progression factors. In order to obtain more consistent results and with the ultimate goal to be able to discriminate between the effects of competence factors as opposed to progression factors, we have conducted experiments to determine the appropriate concentrations of plasma and PDGF required for imparting competence in the fibroblast proliferation assay. We tested lung fibroblast cells obtained from explants of rat lung tissue and also a fetal human lung fibroblast cell line obtained from American Tissue Culture Collection (ATCC153). MATERIALS AND METHODS Fibroblasts Specific pathogen-free, male Sprague-Dawley rats were use in some studies. Animals were given a lethal intraperitoneal dose of sodium pentobarbital. Fibroblasts were isolated by chopping the lung in enzymes that digest the connective tissue but liberate lung cells for further study (Rabovsky et al., 1989). After digestion, the remaining lung tissue suspension was filtered through two layers of sterile gauze and centrifuged to recover lung fibroblasts. These were resuspended in culture medium that contained 10% fetal calf serum and distributed to culture plates for growth. In other experiments, a human fetal lung fibroblast cell line, obtained from American Type Culture Collection, Rockville, MD, 20852, was used instead of rat lung fibroblasts. In these cases, a 1 ml ampule containing human fetal fibroblasts was plated into a tissue culture flask containing medium plus 10% fetal calf serum. For both types of fibroblasts, culture medium was changed 3 times per week and cultures were incubated at 37°C until confluent. Harvested rat and human lung fibroblasts were quantified using an electronic cell counter equipped with a cell sizing attachment (Coulter Electronics, Inc., Hialeah, Florida). Tritiated Thymidine Incorporation The basic procedural outline of Kumar et al. (1988) was used with modifications to evaluate tritiated thymidine incorporation into fibroblast DNA following exposure to PDGF and plasma. Both rat and human lung fibroblasts were plated at 50,000 cells/ml at a density of 250,000 cells/25cm2 culture plate. Cells were quiesced for 4 days with 2% rat plasma. As the assay was refined, fibroblasts were quiesced in plasma-free media for 48 hrs, since the mitogenic activity of 2% plasma was variable. Test medium was applied for a period of 6 hrs, followed by a 24 hr tritiated thymidine (lµCi/ml) labelling period in plasma-free media. Medium alone was used as a negative control and media with 10 or 20% fetal calf serum was used as the positive control for rat and human fibroblasts, respectively. Cell Quantification and Measurement of Mitogenesis Twenty-four hours after the addition of tritiated thymidine, the fibroblasts were washed with 5ml of fresh serum-free media, centrifuged and resuspended in phosphate-buffered saline.
