Low-rank coal (LRC) drying processes are generally categorized by operating temperature, drying environment and type of feed (either sized or ground coal). Within these broad categories, drying processes differ according to the type of drying equipment and methods of quenching and stabilizing the dried products. This paper focuses on the produce quality of various LRC drying processes including conventional low and high temperature evaporative drying and non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying. The former may be preferred if the dried product can be utilized immediately, but moisture reabsorption, spontaneous heating and fines production during handling are problems associated with longer term storage, transportation and utilization. Methods for reducing these problems are discussed. Hydrothermal processing is an advanced technology featuring high pressure, non-evaporative drying, which solves stability problems by producing a liquid feel.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued study of the Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) developed by Rupprecht & Patashnick Co. Inc. through a CDC contract and currently being commercialized by Thermo Fisher Scientific. This report examines the effect of oversize particles, cyclone inversion, and cleaning procedures. Clean and exposed filters were examined using light microscopy and particulates counted before and after various instrument manipulations. The data presented show that the dry cleaning procedures do not cause significant (greater than limit of detection) sample contamination by respirable or oversize particulates and that the cyclone is resistant to particulate carry over during inversion.

Dolomite impurities are increasing in the currently mined phosphate deposits in Florida. Several research efforts have been conducted in various laboratories around the globe to find methods to economically removing the dolomite. However, a universal and cost-effective process is not now in commercial use. In this paper, a new process for dolomite/apatite separation is presented. The differential solubility of dolomite in slightly acidic solution is utilized to generate micro CO2 bubbles at the dolomite/water interface. Particle (dolomite)/bubble aggregates float to the surface leaving phosphate concentrate with low MgO content. Interestingly, up to 6.0 mm particles can be floated by such micro-bubble/particle aggregates. Different surface-active agents were tested to stabilize the bubbles. Results of these tests are presented, and the mechanisms involved are discussed.

This paper describes the design and construction of a 22.86 m (75 ft) long jacked tunnel, which was successfully installed, despite difficult mixed face conditions at Metro-North’s Westport Station, in Connecticut in the fall of 2003. The tunnel utilized what is believed to be, the first application of a steel grillage system within the United States. This grillage was installed before the jacking started and allowed the tunnel to be jacked under four live railway tracks, which included the Acela high speed line, without affecting train operations. The clearance between the top of the tunnel and the rails was only 0.9 m (3 ft).

Introduction The pressure/vacuum (p/v) lysimeter or soil water sampler has become useful for monitoring vadose zone or unsaturated zone water conditions. The soil water sampler was first introduced around 1961. It was used as a monitoring and research device for studies in agriculture and soil contamination around landfills. Since then, it has been used for many purposes. The use of p/v lysimeters at mining facilities to monitor for solution loss is a relatively new idea. The primary purpose of the lysimeter here is to function as an early warning system. It detects leakage through liners of tailings ponds, heap leach pads, and leachate holding ponds. Their use has proven valuable for collecting baseline data and detecting loss of precious leachate fluid. Different lysimeter designs are capable of vadose moisture sampling from near the surface and down to 90 m (300 ft). They are also capable of sampling soil moisture or saturation plume contaminants from areas not accessible by conventional water well installations. The most common installations are usually simple and cost-effective. In many cases, they can be installed without the use of heavy drilling equipment. A properly placed and installed lysimeter can detect solution leaks in several days or weeks. A conventional perimeter monitor well may take months or years to detect a leak of the same magnitude. A discussion on the general design and installation of p/v lysimeters will give an understanding of its versatility. Three case studies of lysimeter installations at mining sites will be examined in detail. Design, Installation, and Sampling Design The basic design of a p/v lysimeter chamber consists of a porous material through which the soil is drawn into a collection chamber. Access tubes run from the unit to the sample station at the ground surface. Most units currently available range from 25 to 76 mm-diam (1 to 3 in.-diam). The sample collection chamber, or body, can vary from 0.6 to 1.8 m (2 to 6 ft) in length. The body can be constructed of PVC casing or Teflon, depending on the installation desired. The collection chamber functions as a holding reservoir for the collected soil moisture. The intake, or porous material, on the lysimeter is the most complex and vulnerable portion of the unit. The pore size selection varies based on the needs of the installation, type of fluid to be sampled, and type of soil material surrounding the unit. Teflon (PTFE) and porous ceramic are used in fabrication of the porous inlet portion. When using a Teflon material, which is hydrophobic, a larger pore size of 70 µm is needed to overcome surface tension and draw water into the collection chamber. It is typically used at sites involving organic contamination, because of its inert properties. Ceramic material is generally hydrophilic, having less surface tension. Therefore, it has a smaller porosity range to conduct the moisture through the porous medium while under vacuum. Pore sizes may be selected from 0.16 to 6 µm, and can be manufactured for the specific needs of the installation. The final major design component of the p/v lysimeter is the access or sampling tubes. The tubes are usually of 6.3-mm-outside-diam. (0.25-in.-outside-diam). The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County involves TBM mining a pair of subway tunnels through soil and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow city street. Along the tunnel alignment are a historic building on shallow foundations and modern buildings on deep foundations, one constructed directly over the alignment during the latter phases of design. This paper provides an overview of the general site conditions, and technical basis for excavation support and tunneling decisions. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans, geotechnical baseline report development, and risk management will also be discussed.

Precipitated calcium carbonate is used as a filler and coating material in the manufacturing of paper because of its high brightness and light scattering characteristics. However, beneficiated calcite has similar potential, given the fact that the industrial specifications are already achieved. For paper industries, the requirement is that the desired product should be pure and have a brightness of 93 to 95 percent. A very-high-grade calcite deposit of around 92 percent is located in the north of Norway, which is used as the raw material for ground calcium carbonate (GCC) feed for the paper industries. There is a substantial amount of calcite resource, which has pyrite and pyrrhotite as major impurities. These sulfides, even when present in minor concentrations, impart color to the end product (paper). Removing these minerals is estimated to increase utilization of the deposit by 10  percent, which represents several million tonnes of calcite marble. Due to the requirement for environmentally friendly reagents and chemicals by the mineral industry, fatty di-amines are being tested for pyrite and pyrrhotite flotation. The interaction mechanism of diamine with the main components of the ore were studied and optimum conditions for removal of sulfide impurities are outlined.

The MODSIM mineral processing plant simultor is used to find optimal combinations of target separation specific gravities in a typical modem coal washing plant. A plant that is set up with these optimal targets can deliver up to 10% more yield at the same ash content as the same plant set up with separation targets chosen by conventional methods. MODSIM is the only simulator currently available that can simulate the liberation of pyrite and other mineral matter during open- and closed-circuit grinding operations. The simulator can therefore be used to assess the benefits of grinding operations in the flowsheet.

Ground freezing occupies a unique and important niche in underground construction, fulfilling a geotechnical need that is difficult, or sometimes impossible, to fulfill through other groundwater control and excavation support methods. Where complete groundwater cut-off and in-built ground support are required, and deep excavation is planned or the work occurs in difficult or disturbed ground, ground freezing offers the assurance critical to safe and timely construction. Compared with other groundwater cut-off or excavation support methods, a frozen wall is easily connected to underlying bedrock and will also adhere to adjoining subsurface installations or obstructions, if necessary, to provide a composite cutoff structure. Ground freezing is effective in all soil and ground conditions and has been used for emergency situations in disturbed, displaced or loose ground, where detailed soil characterization could not practically be performed.

According to the U.S Department of Energy (DOE), mineral processing activities including comminution (size reduction) uses 4% of the world electrical energy consumption. Such numbers reinforce the need to invest in energy savings initiatives in order to produce more using less. ENERGY EFFICIENCY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN MINING OPERATIONS In addition, DOE, in its Mining Industry Energy Bandwidth Study, has identified huge potential for energy savings for the coal, metals and mineral industries. Even knowing the overall causes of energy waste and some potential tools for remediation, mining companies may struggle to apply such tools and get the desired results due to the following reasons: ? Limited staff ? Lack of accurate economic and investment analysis to justify energy savings projects ? Lack of knowledge to identify low or no-cost savings opportunities ? Internal competition for resources According to the workforce and talent management experts, the Talent Strategy Advisors, the demand for mining engineers is expected to exceed supply by 30% by 2013. Mining personnel are likely to be burdened with increasing and varied workloads with limited training. This will result in the need for automated and simple tools to support energy efficiency activities. Mining engineers will simply not have the time and resources to create such tools, collect and analyze the data to make decisions, and track results.

The mining industry has had three difficult years. Commodity prices have remained low and investor confidence in the industry has been shaken. And even though the Asian economy appears to be improving, it will be some time before this improvement will translate into better commodity price conditions for mining. In addition, increased environmental and social restrictions that have been placed on the industry in developed and developing countries have made mining a more difficult proposition. And, if that is not enough, the global mining industry has found itself in fierce competition with Internet businesses for investor capital. Despite that gloomy picture, more than 10,500 mining industry professionals from about 70 countries gathered in Toronto, Ontario March 5-10, 2000 for the Mining Millennium 2000 conference. This meeting was a joint effort between the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum(CIM) and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).The joint meeting also featured two trade exhibitions and more than 150speakers. PDAC’s trade show attracted about 400 exhibitors and an additional 200 in the concurrent Investors’ Exchange. CIM’s exhibition attracted about 600 equipment and service companies.

Fan applications in the mining industry have changed during the last 70 years. In 1922, J.R. Robinson authored a technical volume entitled Practical Mine Ventilation. At that time, atmospheric control had only recently shifted from natural to mechanical. The large, mechanical draft fans that were used then were centrifugal. The fans ran at low speeds, about300 rpm. Most were steam-engine driven. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, mines became larger, increasing the pressure and volume requirements of the fan equipment. Axial fans were designed to run at much higher speeds (710 to 880 rpm) and were driven by electric motors. They were also smaller and less expensive to install than the cumbersome centrifugal units. However, changes in mining have resulted in progressively higher static-pressure requirements. So centrifugal fans are once again proving to be a good choice.

Technical and non-technical challenges exist in each mega infrastructure project. It?s no exception to the first US underground PPP Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT) project in Miami, FL. The POMT will connect two man-made islands, the Dodge and the Watson Islands, under the Biscayne Bay within highly porous limestone formation. Permeability as high as 0.1 cm/sec has been identified. Its 41-ft outside diameter, if constructed, is the largest precast segment lining in the US. Besides its geological and hydro geological challenges and risks, local community influence and impacts have controlled the fate of this project. This paper describes its tender design enhancements and the evolving of its slow advancement in resolving local community issues.

The primary advantage of using oxalic acid is in the formation during leaching of soluble complexes that are both photo-chemically and microbiologically degradable. In this study, chemical leaching and bioleaching methods were used for quartz sand. Using the ANOVA-Yates test technique, the effects of solids rate, temperature and oxalic acid rate were investigated using chemical leaching experiments. Solids rate and temperature were effective parameters on the chemical leaching. After the tests, the removal of Fe2O3 increased to 97.02%. Finally, the iron content decreased from 0.315% Fe2O3 to 0.0094% Fe2O3 in the leached quartz sand. The effect of pulp density was investigated on the bioleaching experiments. The bioleaching of iron oxides by Aspergillus niger resulted in removal of 47.70% of the total iron in the quartz sand, and suggested that this strain has not a good ability to remove iron impurities from quartz sand in comparison with chemical leaching. The iron content decreased from 0.315% Fe2O3 to 0.164% Fe2O3 in the bioleached quartz sand.

A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22-m (4-ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that SMCRA sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. There has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analyses indicate that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope.

Introduction Newmont Mining Corp.'s Carlin Gold Mining Co. mines gold ore and waste material from four open-pit mines in Northeastern Nevada. Combined production rate is 24.5 Mt/a (27 million stpy). The company is producing gold bullion from the 2.4 kt/d (2600 stpd) Carlin Mill No. 1. and the 2.3 kt/d (2600 stpd) Maggie Creek heap leaching plant. In August 1985, the 6.3 kt/d (7000 stpd) Carlin Mill No. 2 at Gold Quarry came on-line. The total combined throughput of 11.2 kt/d (12,000 stpd) will make Carlin Gold Mining one of the largest US gold producers. Feasibility studies are underway to increase the total gold out-put from Gold Quarry. This will be done by adding a continuous dump-leaching process that will recover gold from lower grade ore. History In 1961, Newmont exploration geologists located claims in the Lynn Creek mining district near Carlin, NV. An exploration drilling program revealed significant gold mineralization. A stepped-up drilling program revealed an ore body with an estimated 10 Mt (11 million st) of ore containing 109 t (3.5 million oz) of gold. Test results in 1963 allowed metallurgists to develop the flowsheet and design for a 1.8-kt/d (2000-stpd) countercurrent decantation (CCD) cyanide plant. Carlin Gold Mining Co. was formed to operate the property. Carlin purchased its first mining equipment in 1965. This consisted of two Bucyrus-Erie 2.7 m3 (3.5 cu yd) shovels and nine 27.2 t (30 st) Wabco Haulpak trucks, two Inger¬soll-Rand track-mounted drills, one Chicago Pneumatic T-650 rotary drill, one rubber tired Michigan 280 dozer, one Caterpillar D-8 36A track dozer, one Caterpillar 16 motor grader, and the necessary ancillary equipment. The fleet was capable of mining 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 mil¬lion stpy) working two eight-hour shifts, five days a week. In 1967, one P&H 1500 3.8 m3(5 cu yd) diesel electrical shovel and three 59 t (65 st) Dart trucks were added to the fleet, along with a Chicago Pneumatic rubber tire mounted rotary drill. This equipment addition increased the mining capabilities to 5.7 Mt/a (6.3 million stpy). Three separate pits, the Main, East, and West, within a 1.6-km (1-mile) radius of the Carlin mill were being mined. The crew consisted of 46 hourly men and three supervisors. This equals 497 t/ total hourly manshift (548 st) or 407 t/total manshift (515 st). Rising gold prices in the early 1970s allowed lower grade deposits to be mined at greater distances from the mill. The Boot-strap pit, 19.3 km (12 miles) north of Carlin, was started in 1973. Evaluating the performance of a shielded tunnel boring machine (TBM) can be difficult because the ground cannot be observed directly and in relation to the TBM attitude within the excavation. It is difficult to determine whether performance problems are caused by ground loading, steering issues, fine muck packing against the shield, or migration of annular grout around the shield. The Arrowhead Tunnels Project in Southern California uses strain gauges on its shielded hard rock TBMs to detect shield strains early and correlate them with tunneling conditions, thereby increasing the chances that problems will be correctly diagnosed and addressed to optimize TBM performance. The frequent automatic measurement of shield strain has also been valuable by confirming whether remedial methods used to free the machine after stoppages are effective. This paper discusses the qualitative interpretation of characteristic strain patterns on the Arrowhead Tunnels TBM shields and discusses installation details and special considerations for setting up a strain measurement system.

King County?s (KC) Brightwater Conveyance Project in Seattle, Washington involves the construction of approximately 21 kilometers (13 miles) of bored tunnel, in three contracts, with four TBM?s which produce large amounts of real-time digital mining data. To facilitate the management of TBM data with a single interface and assist in project Quality Assurance, KC?s Construction Manager (Jacobs Engineering) recommended the use of the software TPC (Tunneling Process Control), developed by Babendererde Engineers GmbH. The paper demonstrates how TPC was used for oversight, analysis and QA on a complex tunneling project and how contemporaneous review and management of data results in a better understanding of TBM performance than can be obtained by retrospective analysis of data.

Recent advances in GPS, machine guidance technology and telemetry allow an unprecedented level of control of surface mining operations. GPS technology can now locate the bucket of a shovel or the blade of a dozer within 50mm (2 inches).Some of the outcomes possible are: precise selective mining – even when the ore is visually indistinguishable from waste: tracking grade and tonnage of every ore parcel through the mine: real time productivity monitoring: detailed post accident safety analysis: tracking the movements of every piece of equipment. This paper will consider the contribution that GPS based machine control systems can make to ensuring that surface mining projects deliver the outcomes promised in the feasibility studies. Case studies of installations are presented.
