GENERAL DESCRIPTION Shrinkage or shrinkage stoping refers to any mining method in which broken ore is temporarily retained in the stope to provide a working platform and/or to offer temporary support to the stope walls during active mining. Since ore "swells" when broken, it is necessary to shrink the muck pile a corresponding amount by draw¬ing some of the broken ore out as the stope is advanced-hence the name. Broken ore retained during stoping is drawn out after the stope has reached its limits. The stope may be left empty or may be filled with waste contemporaneous with, or subsequent to, the final draw. Traditionally the method implies conventional overhand stoping methods with miners working between the muck pile and the stope back, in a space which advances updip with mining and is maintained by balanc¬ing "swell" with "shrink." The shrinkage classification is also applicable to so-called "semishrinkage" methods in open pillar-supported stopes where broken ore is temporarily retained as a working platform but offers no wall support; and to various blasthole shrinkage methods which utilize broken ore temporarily retained in the stope for wall support, but which do not require miners to work from muck pile in the stope. The method is generally applied to steeply dipping veins of strong ore between strong walls. APPLICATION Geometry The geometry of a shrinkable vein is described in terms of dip, width, and regularity along dip. Overall strike and dip dimensions and irregularities along the strike generally impose no restrictions on the method. Dip is ideally 1.2 to 1.5 rad (70 to 90°). As dip falls below 1.2 rad (70°), the shrinkage draw begins to strongly favor the hanging wall side, thus leaving a poor working platform for conventional overhand work. This is particularly true in relatively wide stopes. The sup¬port afforded to the hanging wall also diminishes with decreasing dip, reaching nil as the dip approaches the repose angle of broken ore. Dips below 0.78 to 0.87 rad (45 to 50°) are not generally shrinkable except by open stope "seinishrinkage" methods. Minimum mining width is fixed by working space requirements in the stope-generally about 1 m. Shrink¬age in narrower veins requires that waste rock from one or both walls be broken with the ore and the attendant dilution accepted to achieve the minimum width. Nar¬row stopes are less suitable, encouraging hang-ups and bridging of broken ore, with the attendant problems of erratic draw and incomplete recovery of broken ore. Maximum practical width may be 3 m or less to over 30 m, depending upon the competency of the ore and its ability to stand unsupported across the stope back. This is a vital safety consideration in conventional over¬hand stopes, but is much less of a factor in blasthole shrinkage methods. Very wide veins and massive ore bodies have been mined by transverse vertical shrinkage panels separated by transverse vertical pillars which are either abandoned or recovered later by other methods. Regularity along the dip is a prerequisite of shrink¬age as there must be no serious obstruction to the flow of broken ore downward through the stope to the sill level. Gentle rolls along the dip are acceptable if the local footwall dip everywhere exceeds 0.78 to 0.87 rad (45 to 50°). Off-dip hanging wall and/or footwall splits can generally be mined selectively from a conventional shrink stope as they are encountered without ad¬versely affecting subsequent continuation of shrinkage mining updip on the main vein. Vertical offsets or major rolls along the dip which cannot be "smoothed over" generally require that a sublevel be established with new draw control development. Blasthole shrinkage methods are much less flexible (and thus less selective) in their ability to accommodate any of these irregularities. Ground Conditions The wall rock must be strong enough to stand with the minimal support afforded by the dynamic mass of broken ore in the stope. During active mining, local sloughing from the walls is restrained, but the broken ore affords little, if any, useful resistance to closure of the stope walls. Such squeezing, if present, may bind up the stope and cause the loss of much ore. Pillars left between and/or within stopes are effective in preventing closure but reduce overall recovery. Walls may be re¬inforced by bolting after each stope cut in conventional shrinkage but not in blasthole shrinkage. Ore in place must be strong enough to stand with no natural support across the stope width, although tem¬porary artificial support or reinforcement may be used locally in conventional stopes. Some spalling or sloughing is permissible in blasthole shrinkage as men are never present in the stope. Physical and/or mineralogical characteristics of the broken ore may impose restrictions on stope design and/or operational plan¬ning, and may even preclude the use of shrinkage al¬together. Examples include: ores which, when broken, are cohesive or which tend to pack or cement together under the influence of ground water, wall pressure, and/ or chemical reaction. Such conditions precipitate er¬ratic draw during mining and often result in difficult and/or incomplete final draw; pyritic ores which oxidize very rapidly in the stopes and may generate heat, imposing a fire hazard by spontaneous combustion; sulfide ores which oxidize sufficiently in the stopes to adversely affect mill recovery by flotation; and ores (es¬pecially those containing uranium minerals) which ex¬ude radon gas and thereby impose ventilation constraints on stope design. In most cases these problems can be minimized by limiting the size of stopes, by minimizing the duration of mining activity in each stope, and by promptly drawing each stope empty following comple¬tion of mining.

Many investigators conducted surface force measurements between hydrophobic surfaces in water, and observed attractive force that was substantially stronger than the van der Waals attractive force. The excess force was appropriately referred to as “hydrophobic force”, for which many different theories have been put forth by numerous investigators. In an earlier publication (Yoon and Ravishankar, 1996), it was suggested that the hydrophobic force maybe due to the interaction between the large dipoles created by the surfactants adsorbing on solid surfaces in patches (or domains). In the present work, a mathematical model has been developed to further elaborate the theory.

Hydrologic assessments of existing and proposed waste rock stockpiles are typically required for application of operating and closure permits at mine sites. A hydrologic assessment should include an evaluation of climatic data and prediction of the net infiltration rate through the waste rock stockpile surface. In addition, hydrologic factors such as the time required to deplete available moisture storage in the stockpiles and the time required for potential seepage to migrate to the underlying aquifer should also be predicted.

"3D finite element models of the Segmentally Lined Shaft (SLS) structure are simulated as means of numerical analyses of the system’s structural behavior. Top-down constructed rings, comprised of precast concrete segments, create a large diameter, relatively shallow underground space that can be utilized for various applications. To further investigate the effects of soil conditions and different loadings on the shaft structure, the FE model was run under various boundary conditions. Simulations include a) effects of various soil layers on the SLS, including a circumferential boundary of modified ground, b) effects of various soil layers on the SLS without any ground modification, c) Seismic analysis of the SLS with ground modification and d) Seismic analysis of the SLS without any ground modification. Comparing the analyses outcomes emphasizes the significance of the inclusion of the ground modification boundary in the structural performance of the SLS. INTRODUCTION TO SLS Underground structures are classically built rectangular in shape, which normally requires a two-step construction process beginning with installation of temporary shoring to support earth loads during the excavation, followed by the construction of the permanent structure. Attractive and practical alternatives are circular shafts referred to as segmentally lined shafts (SLS). The structure consists of a stacked series of rings formed from an assemblage of precast concrete segments. Top-down constructed systems of large diameter, relatively shallow SLS structures provide both temporary earth support during excavation and permanent structural support for many civil and building applications. The circular shafts sustain the lateral earth pressure mainly through hoop-stress mechanism, resulting in improved stability and structural efficiency. Cylindrical shell structures with large diameter to wall thickness ratios are prone to buckling under external pressure. In typical designs of small diameter shafts and tunnel linings with small diameter to wall thickness ratios, nonlinear buckling analysis (i.e., nonlinear geometric analysis) is usually not considered, since the buckling capacities for those structures are much higher than typical pressures encountered at their design depths. With an economically viable wall thickness, buckling becomes a critical issue, which should be addressed, for circular shafts with very large diameters. In the design and construction of the SLS, the stability of the structure can be improved by modifying the soil surrounding the circumference of the shaft to a limited thickness and to about 10 ft below the finished shaft structure. This thick wall of soil mixed with cement creates a composite integrated structure while serving additional purposes such as ground control and ground water seepage cutoff."

Maximizing production of oil from sandstone petroleum reservoirs is aided by use of non-damaging drilling and workover/completion fluids. Various tests, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microsccpy, petrographic microscopy, porosity and permeability are conducted on core samples. Several fluids are selected, on the basis of these results, for return permeability tests. A report is then written giving the results of all tests, potential reservoir problems, and recommended practices for exploiting the reservoir.

A year ago, if I had the pleasure of addressing you, I would have discussed ocean mineral resources from a promotional standpoint. I would have described exciting indications of mammoth tonnages of sea-floor industrial minerals. I would have attempted to fire your imaginations as to the potential of a nation having the technologic know-how to exploit its submerged boundaries. As a first step toward this capability, I would have solicited your support for a Bureau of Mines? program aimed at determining the industrial worth of marine minerals and devising techniques and hard- ware for their recovery. We still need your support, but recently we have ventured out of the realm of planning and into your Government's first program in marine mineral engineering. Today, I wish to describe what we have done within the framework of existing research problems and our possible goals. I will be brief so as to allow ample time for questions, and I can do this with confidence because our program is so new that I need not be chagrined at not having all the answers.

Through the use of "just-in-time" and "total quality control" practices, WCM methods establish an environment for continual and rapid improvement in all aspects of production operations, with particular gains in product quality, costs, flexibility, employee involvement, and responsiveness to customers. This paper examines WCM techniques that can be utilized specifically in the mill, and their influence on plant configuration, organization, and scheduling practices; equipment selection and maintenance methods; training; the role of supporting staff; and methods of data collection and analysis.

All mining operations using trucks have a common need to properly match the number and size of hauling units (trucks. wagons. scrapers. etc.) to a loading unit (wheel loader. hydraulic shovel/excavator, cable shovel. push tractor. etc.) to provide the best possible fleet match. Optimizing fleet match minimizes the cost per unit of material moved by that fleet. As haul conditions change (haul length. grade. or rolling resistance), there may be need to adjust the number of trucks to maintain the optimum fleet match. Fleet Production and Cost is a tool which, among other things, can be used to optimize the truck-loader match.

The traditional way of generating open-pit mine production schedules has several limitations. This work addresses the design and production-scheduling problem by considering minimum operational space requirements under a Direct Block Scheduling approach to generate extraction sequences that satisfy the operational space required. For this, traditional formulations were extended by including a new set of constraints that generate operating spaces for mining equipment to move and extract material. Then, a heuristic algorithm produces close to optimal practical pushbacks. This proposal was applied in a case study, and the results show its ability to generate practical production schedules without sacrificing expected return, obtaining differences in terms of Net Present Value (NPV) lower than 1% when compared to the traditional approach.

The SAG milling of ores with markedly variable grinding rates presents definite process control challenges. Decisions must be made regarding the selection of the most appropriate combination of mill volumetric load level, percent solids, and mill speed for the combination of ore types being processed at the moment. An investigation was performed concerning the effects of these parameters. General results are presented.

Mining of thin coal seams is both difficult and uneconomical. As a result, most of thin-seam coal reserves in the U. S. are not being mined. It is estimated that nearly 910 Gt (K. Unrug, 1985) of coal reserves exist in 355 to 710 mm thick seams. The Bureau is attempting to develop new techniques for mining 150 to 1065 mm thick coal seams. This paper summarizes the research work on existing thin-seam mining techniques, testing on small and full scale physical models of the Bureau slot mining concept, and computer modeling of the full-scale process.

Introduction The depth of open-pit mines continues to increase. The typical designed depth for large quarries is now in the 300 to 600 m (1,000 to 2,000 ft) range, with some quarries even reaching depths of 700 to 800 m (2,300 to 2,600 ft). The cost of handling material from such deep mines can be 60% to 70% of the total cost. The capacity of using a cyclic means of transport, such as trucks or skip hoists, continues to drop as the depth of the mine increases. In addition to the problem of maintaining relatively low slope angles for haul roads, increases in environment pollution and increased fuel consumption make the use of trucks ineffective below 100 to 150 m (300 to 500 ft). In handling large quantities of bulky materials, i.e., more than 15 to 20 Mt/a (16 to 22 million stpy), under fixed terminal points, belt conveyors are preferable in almost in all cases. An exception is when the lump size of the load is too high for the conveyor to handle. Belt conveyors in mines can handle loads having a maximum lump size of no more than 250 to 300 mm (10 to 12 in.). The use of a movable crusher prior to the belt conveyor in an open-pit mine would make the process very expensive. Such an operation could not compete with truck haulage on a cost basis. Belt-car conveyor The main factor that restricts the lump size for conventional belt conveyors is collision impacts between the load-carrying belt and idlers. These impacts are completely eliminated in the belt-car conveyor, which was previously described by Mulukhov (1977). The unique feature of the conveyor is that the load-carrying belt is supported by moving cars. Each car consists of a troughed cross strap that supports the belt with the load and two rollers, on which the cars move along upper and lower rails. Cars are connected by two endless chains revolving over sprockets. The system uses conventional drive pulleys, tail pulleys and return idlers. There are no fasteners between the carrying belt and the car cross straps. The conveyor belt simply drives the cars along by the force of friction between the belt and the straps. A belt-car conveyor was first installed in 1970 at the Karatau mining operation in Kazakhstan. The system was an elevating conveyor with an inclination of 20° and was located on the final part of the truck haul road. The conveyor transferred blasting phosphate ore from the quarry to the crushing plant. A bunker was mounted between the trucks and the conveyor. The maximum lump size was typically 1,200 mm (48 in.). However, there were some lumps as large as 1,500mm (60 in.), which was greater than even the belt width (Fig. 1). Because the prototype belt-car conveyor was intended only for industrial trails, it had a relatively short length of about 50 m (160 ft). Nevertheless, the conveyor yielded a substantial profit over the cost of truck haulage. Naturally, the first question one might ask is why such a system is not now widely used. The reason was the further development of a huge transporting complex for the whole quarry at the base of the belt-car conveyor. After successful industrial trials from 1971 through 1973, which demonstrated the systems engineering feasibility, the State Planning Committee of the USSR included the development of the belt-car conveyor in its plan for the development of the national economy. However, mistakes were made. First, a single organization was not in charge of the development. Second, a plant that was not specialized in belt conveyors was put in charge of the design and manufacturing of the conveyor system. In addition, the crusher was installed before the stacker, which negated the major advantages of the belt-car conveyor. For loading the conveyor, a special blade feeder with pendulum suspension was developed, but it was found unreliable. The main conclusion was that, in-

INTRODUCTION Coal is geologically a sedimentary rock with distinct bedding planes containing a mixture of petrographic constituents. Yet. because of its chemical nature, it also has some of the characteristics of a polymeric material. In addition, it is extensively precracked to give a macropore structure and also has a substantial internal volume of microporosity. Add to this the mineral constituents dispersed in the coal in a variety of forms and sizes. and it can be readily appreciated that coal is a complex and heterogeneous material. It has to date not been possible to predict the particle size distributions produced by breakage of coals from a priori application of the principles of fracture mechanics. However, there is a substantial body of data resulting from empirical observation of size distributions produced under various conditions, primarily from grinding mills. It is the function of this review to outline how this empirical information can be used to predict product size distributions for those systems which have been studied systematically, and to suggest future avenues of research using similar methodology. FRACTURE THEORY APPLIED TO COAL It is, of course, possible to devise experiments for slow crack propagation in a coal. However, the evidence is that coal breaks by brittle fracture in the mills and mining machines of industrial importance and therefore the theory of brittle fracture is sufficient to illustrate the important features of the fracture of coal. In order to produce size reduction a solid must be stressed by the application of force. The force can be a tensile (stretching), compressive, or shear force, and the three dimensional stress pattern in the solid represents the tensile, compressive, and shear forces per unit area acting in any direction through any point in the solid. As an illustration consider the case of a simple one-dimensional tensile stress: then stress is defined as a=F/A where F is the force. A is the cross-sectional area of the solid normal to F and strain. E, is defined as the fractional change in the length of the solid. so that E= x/L where x is the extension of an original length of L. Coal behaves as an elastic material over short times (although viscoelastic creep can occur if the stress is maintained over long times) and if it is not stretched too far the coal returns to its original shape when the stress is removed; otherwise catastrophic failure occurs and the coal fractures at a stress termed the tensile strength. The failure under stress of an elastic material is termed brittle fracture. Elastic material fails at small stain and the stress-stain relation to where brittle fracture occurs is the empirical Hooke's law. a= YE, where Y is Young's modulus. The work done on the solid to take the solid from zero external stress to a stressed state by slowly increasing F up to a final stress u is the integral of the stress times the strain. This reversible strain energy is stored in the solid and. using Hooke's law. is u /2Y per unit volume of solid. If the solid is immediately loaded to u the work done is [EAuL] which Is a2 /Y per unit volume, that is, twice the reversible work.

Longwall mining is a relatively new mining method in the United States. Early trials in the eastern and central coal fields were not successful, mainly because, among others, the face supports did not have sufficient capacity. It was not until in the late 1960's, when the high- capacity self-advancing powered supports became available, that longwall mining was successfully reintroduced. Since then the number of mines employing the longwall method has been steadily increasing. It has reached approximately 7.5% in 1981. Currently longwall mining is used mainly in the Appalachian coal field. The seam depth ranges from 150 to 2500 ft. but mostly between 300 and 1400 ft. The seam thickness ranges from 32 to 144 inches with the majority between 40 and 100 inches. Nearly all longwall mining are in flat or nearly flat seams extracting in single slice, although one inclined and one thick seam longwall mining have been either operated or initiated in Colorado.

A mineralogical and geochemical characterization study was carried out on arsenic-bearing Ketza mine tailings to complement a column extraction test program with the purpose of assessing the potential of arsenic mobilization from the tailings. Two types of tailings samples (i.e., exposed tailings from the impoundment area and water covered tailings samples) were subjected to column tests under standing water cover and with no water cover but weekly flow-through flushing. The tailings have a uniform size distribution. The samples are characterized by high Fe2O3 (44.0 to 68.2 %) and As (3.7 to 4.4w%) concentrations. Ferric hydroxides are the dominant species that are mostly amorphous or cryptocrystalline. Arsenopyrite, scorodite, an Fe-Ca arsenate hydrate phase, an Fe-Bi-As phase and ferric hydroxides are the arsenic-bearing minerals. Arsenic is essentially contained in Ca-As goethite, Fe-Ca arsenate hydrate phase and scorodite. Goethite, although containing low levels of arsenic, could be a significant arsenic-bearing phase because of its high abundance. There does not appear to be any significant chemical or mineralogical difference between the original exposed tailings and the material left underwater with no flow-through for over a year. There are differences in terms of CaO, Fe2O3, SiO,, As, goethite, scorodite, calcite and dolomite concentrations between the exposed tailings and the column material after undergoing approximately two-year flow-through and aggressive leach tests. These differences are likely to be resulting from a combination of different column test conditions and sampling or heterogeneity of the material.

Power consumption of stirred media mills has been studied by an approach developed from work on stirred reactors. Relationships between torque required to rotate both disc and pin impellers immersed in dense particulate media as a function of speed, impeller and tank dimensions, and other relevant variables are evaluated. Data collected during numerous different experimental conditions are analyzed. The results can be summarized and presented in the form of characteristic plots, general equations and dimensionless group correlations involving power and modified Reynolds numbers. Special attention is directed towards the rheological properties of the media, which is considered as non-Newtonian liquids and hence, the equation of power law liquids is employed. Procedure for estimating parameters of effective viscosity and scale-up guidelines with respect to power consumption are put forward.

INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a trend in the direction of larger drilling equipment and larger diameter blastholes. Although this change has improved the efficiencies and reduced the costs in many operations, it has increased the potential for damage to underground openings. In addition, in many instances one now finds more sophisticated delicate instruments, automated control facilities, and a large variety of structures in proximity to blasting activity. The combined effect of larger-scale blasting activity and its proximity to various features of interest is such that there is an increased need for a more refined analysis of blasting effects and their control. BLASTING EFFECTS ON ROCK SURFACES The Breakage Mechanism In order to develop techniques for controlled blasting, one must first understand the features of the mechanisms by which blasting causes rock breakage to occur. These features have not been easy to demonstrate, mostly due to the difficulty in making tests and observations at the high stress levels and short time durations involved. When an explosive charge is detonated, the material surrounding the charge is subjected to a nearly instantaneous, very high pressure [on the order of 1.4 to 13.8 GPa (0.2 to 2.0 X 106 psi), depending on the explosive]. If the charge is coupled to "average" rock, this pressure will pulverize the surrounding rock for a distance on the order of 1 to 3 charge radii in hard rock, and to a greater distance in softer rock (this is also dependent on the type of explosive). As the pressure wave passes into the rock, high tangential stresses cause radial cracks to appear, and the nearly discontinuous radial stress zones gen¬erated by the shock front may cause tangential cracks to appear. The extent of these cracks depends on the energy available in the explosive, how quickly the energy is transmitted to the rock, and the strength properties of the rock. The discontinuous shock front is quickly dis¬sipated, but the expanding gases generate a longer-acting pressure. A compressive pulse travels to the nearest face or internal rock boundary where it is reflected in tension. The tensile strengths of most rocks are roughly 40 to %o of their compressive strengths, so the rock may now fail in tension whereas it may have been able to support the diminished compressive phase without failure. The ten¬sile deflection typically produces a failure described as tensile slabbing or scabbing. Laboratory experiments and field experience have pretty well established that several mechanisms are involved. These include (1) the classical case of tensile parallel slabbing when the pressure pulse is reflected at a free surface; (2) failure under quasi-static compressive loading (the shape is normally irregular due to discontinuities in the rock); (3) radial cracking under the action of tangential stresses at the periphery of the expanding pressure pulse; (4) peripheral cracking at the discontinuous shock front which is quickly dissipated; and (5) additional mass shifting due to the venting of the explosive gases. The first three items have received much attention in the laboratory and the literature. The complex effects of gas venting are difficult to test in the laboratory because of the difficulty in reproducing the many weak planes and discontinuities typical of most field conditions, which play such a prominent role in determining the behavior of the rock mass subjected to blasting. Unfortunately, gas venting effects can be pro¬jected to significant distances under certain field conditions, and are sometimes difficult to control. It is not unusual for gas venting to be the overriding factor in determining the final geometric shape and physical condition of the finished excavation. Sources of Damage For the purposes of this discussion, damage includes not only the breaking and rupturing of rock beyond the desired limits of excavation but also an unwanted loosening, dislocation, and disturbance of the rock mass the integrity of which one wishes to preserve (such as mine pillars, underground openings, etc.). The sources of damage include, of course, all those physical features of the rock breakage mechanism. Each of these effects must be limited to the desired zone of breakage and excavation if the integrity of the remaining rock mass is to remain undiminished. The primary zone of rock breakage usually can be controlled in the normal process of field experimentation to determine proper charge sizes and location for primary excavation. However, it frequently happens that there is damage from sources which are more difficult to account for in the design process, which are often overlooked. These are (1) the overbreak due to poor drilling control, (2) dislocation of rock (mass shifting) due to venting of explosive gases, and (3) loosening or dislocation due to the influence of seismic waves (ground vibrations). CONTROL OF ROCK BREAKAGE Importance of Geometry In studying the rock mass and blasting design con¬siderations, it is important to keep in mind the geometric relationships among charge size, shape, and position, and the physical features of the rock mass to be preserved. The features of principal interest are the external shape and position of the rock mass relative to blasting, and the position and attitude of any weak planes in the rock mass. The Sequence of Blasting and Excavation Events Unfortunately, there are too many times when the task of preserving delicate rock is considered hopeless, and because of this attitude, no further effort is ex¬pended towards caution or control. In such cases there is often a failure to recognize the importance of the se¬quence of the procedures. Attention to this can greatly reduce unwanted effects at minimum cost. Various pyrometallurgical methods for treating ilmenite and zircon concentrates are reviewed. Laboratory experiments using a thermal plasma reactor were performed to evaluate the conversions of ilmenite to TiC or TiC-Fe and zircon to ZrC or ZrC-SiC. Results are examined and possible processing routes are identified.

"1.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on the Lee Tunnel project, which is part of the Thames Water’s Tideway Project.The client Thames Water has employed a Joint Venture of Morgan Sindall/Vinci Grand Projets and Bachy Soletanche to undertake the design and construction of the project under the management of CH2M Hill at a value in excess of £635 million ($990 million). The 3 main elements of the tunnel project are the permanent lining to the shafts, the precast segmental lining, and the secondary tunnel lining. All 3 are reinforced with different types of Dramix steel wire fibers and each element will be described in this paper. This paper will explain the basic structural design of FRC (Fiber reinforced concrete) based on the post cracking residual strength and will describe all the steps of this project, the testing program realized to support innovative design and the main technical learning point. 2.BASIC CONCEPT OF STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF FRCStructural design of FRC elements is based on the post-cracking residual strength provided by fiberreinforcement. Other cases, like early age crack-control or fire resistance, are considered non-structural use of FRC. For structural use, a minimum mechanical performance of FRC must be guaranteed. Fibers can be used to improve the behavior at SLS (Service Limit State) since they can reduce crack spacing and crack width, thereby improving durability and they can be used to improve the behavior at ULS (Ultimate Limit State) where they can partially or totally substitute conventional reinforcement in most conditions. In the design process, the definition of the performance expected from the material is a key factor and the mix-design of the material has to be optimized for the required structural performance.2.1 Testing Method In order to ascertain the structural requirements requested for the FRC segments, preliminary testing on samples will be required and the effectiveness of the proposed solution will also be assured by the testing of full scale specimens. The cluster of gold deposits at the Goldstrike property is located in the Northern Carlin Trend in northeastern Nevada (Fig. 1). At many mature mining camps like Goldstrike, exploration innovation and success may wane with time. In this regard, sufficient exploration drilling was conducted in the area immediately north of the ultimate pit crest and under the final planned pit wall to test for a major deposit. No indications of large deposits were found, however, the majority of drill holes did intercept mineralization. Mining along the northern pit wall exposed significant structurally controlled ore-grade mineralization that had been missed by exploration drilling. In 2002 and early 2003, the mine geology group added reserves to the pit and improved the definition of underground resources by targeting specific ore-controlling structures within favorable stratigraphic units by utilizing relatively inexpensive horizontal RC drilling from the pit wall. The widespread occurrence of mineralization to the north of the pit was re-interpreted to be an indication of continuity of these mineralized zones. In January 2003, 70 feet of 0.332 opt Au at a depth of 710 to 780 feet was intercepted in a dewatering well. This intercept was significantly thicker and higher-grade than average for the area, which confirmed the existence of high-grade structural continuity, and helped secure management support for additional exploration. A timely and cost effective solution was needed to confirm the potential of the area. Immediate follow-up drilling on tighter grid spacing was rejected in favor of improving the geology model. Exploration across the property would benefit from an improved geology model, but to provide results in a timely manner, the area to the north of the Betze pit was chosen as a starting point (Fig. 2).
