The primary objective of most comminution operations is liberation; however, mill performance is generally quantified in terms of particle size. Only recently has the use of image analysis equipment made it possible to quantify mill performance on the basis of liberation. In this investigation, a series of tests were carried out to study the effect of mill operating parameters on the liberation of sphalerite from a sphalerite/dolomite ore. The parameters studied included mill rotational speed, mill loading and ball size. The results of this work appear to indicate that sphalerite liberation is improved under conditions that promote impact breakage, while dolomite breakage is enhanced under attrition conditions.

The Burnaby Mountain Tunnel was an integral part of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. General Contractor, Kiewit Ledcor TMEP Partnership (KLTP), contracted with McNally Construction to build an underground tunnel between the Burnaby and Westridge Marine terminals under Burnaby Mountain. The pipeline was constructed within a 2.6-kilometre tunnel, eliminating the need to run the pipeline over the mountain and minimizing community impacts. The complexities of this Project led to multiple innovations, including the design of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) capable of excavating through mixed-faced conditions concurrently thus allowing the Project team to complete the tunnel with limited geotechnical information.

The highly competitive nature of the international iron ore market has forced producers to improve the quality of their pellets. The demand for low acid pellets suitable for direct reduction has resulted in an increase in the number of plants utilizing reverse froth flotation for silica reduction. Column flotation is being favoured for this service due to the low capital and operating cost of the equipment, as well as improved metallurgical performance when compared to conventional flotation cells. This paper describes the benefits of column flotation and discusses some important aspects of circuit design.

At our annual meeting in St, Louis, Mo. in February 1961, we presented a comprehensive paper (No. 61-B-22) on the subject of "Blending and Handling of Materials for Agglomeration". In that paper you will find a discussion on the difference between "blending" and "mixing". With regard to "blending" we brought out the facts of its usefulness for the preparation o materials in an agglomerated mass to attain controlled chemical and physical uniformity. "Mixing" was discredited as not being useful for the attainment of uniformity of any kind.

Excessive heat exposure is among the health and safety hazards that have adverse effects on the mine workers. The very nature of the underground climate makes it a convenient avenue for heat generation and accumulation from several heat sources including autocompression, equipment, and heat from strata. This study investigated the effects of clothing insulation and acclimation on the thermal comfort ofmineworkers who are exposed to heat in underground working environments. Several clothing ensembles have been considered to analyze the effect of the thermal resistance of clothing on the thermal comfort of workers. To investigate the impact of the clothing insulation, the thermal comfort limit of an underground miner was calculated in the form of maximum allowable exposure time for an 8-h shift. Parametric analyses were subsequently performed using an already developed thermal comfort model using MATLAB software. The results demonstrate that clothing insulation has a significant effect on the thermal comfort of mine workers. Increase in the clothing insulation decreases the maximum allowable exposure time of mine workers. This is especially true for the new and non-acclimated workers. Since acclimatized workers can tolerate a higher level of the dehydration and are capable of losing more water by sweat per shift, the maximum allowable exposure time for the acclimated workers are higher than non-acclimated workers. These analyses have shown that acclimated workers can have more continuous work per shift compared with non-acclimated workers. For example, in an environmental condition with clothing that a nonacclimated worker cannot work more than 5 h, an acclimated worker can work a full 8-h shift.

This paper is primarily concerned with the exploration for massive sulphide orebodies. In a discussion of this type, it seems appropriate to establish a few definitions so that all parties may consider the same beast and its habitat. First, the term "massive sulphides", as used here, not only denotes a body of mineralized rock containing in excess of 50% sulphides by volume, but a mass of sulphides that respond as a conductor to the electromagnetic (EM) systems currently in use in exploration. "Disseminated sulphides" refer to all of those sulphide occurrences that respond to the Induced Polarization (IP) geophysical methods most commonly in use in porphyry copper exploration. This latter definition may also include the disseminated sulphide halos so frequently found associated with massive mineralization as well as banded and stringer sulphide mineralization. It is plain to see that these two end members of our definitions can easily blend into each other. The term "volcanogenic" refers here to any and all geologic processes that have their origin in volcanic activity. Thus we are concerned here with the exploration for massive sulphide ore deposits derived from and affected by contemporaneous and post mineral volcanic activity. Furthermore, most massive sulphide deposits are apparently formed in a submarine environment, deposited with extrusive rocks and sediments and/or chemical hot spring accumulations, then enclosed and protected by the addition of more volcanic and sedimentary material then, probably folded and deformed into one of their myriad of shapes.

With the continued downward pressure on coal selling prices, mine management must make its operations as efficient as possible. The problem is the same one throughout the mineral industries, streamlining operations to maintain competitive mining costs (Born, 1991). There has been a great deal of research into better using production manpower. But the story is different for operations support personnel. Traditionally, planning man-power requirements are done annually, with modifications to the operating plan occurring generally quarterly. On the other hand, the demands on manpower are often dynamic, being responsive to changing productivity levels ,mine conditions (including water influx, bad roof, poor floor)and unanticipated project requirements (responses to machine breakdowns or a new section setup requirement because of a drop in coal quality in another area). Such changes may impact the manpower structure significantly. At times they may cause serious labor relations problems concurrently. Realignments and the generation of instability in the workforce because of active job switching (bidding) are a result. Most responses by coal operators are reactive rather than proactive, a situation that could be mollified by more accurate and detailed planning of predictable manpower requirements. A manpower planning tool is needed that takes into consideration such things as changing productivity levels and conditions as manhour requirements for different work areas are planned, rather than blindly allocated through traditional staffing modes.

"Using a parameter representing the degree of hydration of particles in a liquid called hydration index I, which we derived based on Einstein’s viscosity equation, we evaluated the degree of hydration of fine montmorillonite particles in different aqueous solutions by measuring the viscosities of the montmorillonite dispersions and plotting relative viscosity against volume fraction of dry montmorillonite particles in the dispersions. We investigated the effects on the hydration of montmorillonite in aqueous solutions of (1) the type and (2) the concentration of electrolytes in the solutions and (3) pH. For the same concentration of electrolytes, the hydration index I of montmorillonite was found to increase in the order of Na+ > K+ for monovalent cations and Mg2+ > Ca2+ for divalent cations, and to decrease with increasing valence of cations in the order of Na+ > Ca2+ > Al3+. For both Na+ and Ca2+, the hydration index I first increased with increasing concentration of electrolytes and then decreased after a certain concentration. The hydration index I increased with increasing pH. IntroductionClay minerals have the distinctive ability to adsorb water molecules and hydrated cations in aqueous solutions, resulting in hydration on their outer surfaces and in their interlayer spaces. Many investigators (Jurinak, 1963; Anderson and Tice, 1971; Costanzo et al., 1982; Israelachvili, 1992) had found evidence of ice-like structures of water on clay minerals.This phenomenon of hydration plays an important role in the dispersion and sedimentation of clay minerals in aqueous solutions. To understand clay hydration, numerous experimental and simulation studies have been carried out since 1933, including the recent ones of Hawkins and Egelstaff (1980), Skipper et al. (1995), Karaborni et al. (1996), Salles et al. (2013) and Morrow et al. (2013). Among the factors that can influence a clay mineral’s hydration characteristics are chemical composition, type and degree of isomorphous replacement in its structure, and number and nature of associated exchangeable cations."

On-line analyzers have made possible the use of Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) for local control applications in coal preparation plants. This includes FLC control of complete circuits such as heavy media vessels, cyclones and froth flotation. These circuits can be controlled in real time in a feedback control loop with an on-line analyzer. Control strategies can be readily developed using Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques which are first applied off-line in manual mode through the use of control charts and then this process is brought on-line using FLC in conjunction with an on-line analyzer to fully automate the circuit. This paper outlines the types of control strategies employed and presents examples of automatic verses manual control.

My paper relates to bond's third theory of comminution and suggests work be used as a basis for designing crushing and screening plants, this will give more accuracy than existing methods, As stated in the abstract, this paper is only a synopsis of my official paper, many of the questions that might arise in this brief address will be answered by referring to the detail i n the main paper $ Because of the limited time available and the fact that many people here do not need to study the aspects of crushing and screening in depth, i will highlight-those sections of the paper which show how major capital, operating and energy cost savings can be achieved in the process, I will develop the theme in the following manner, Firstly, pointing out, why a new approach is needed to the fundamentals of crushing and screening, Secondly, by setting forth some theory to describe what we are trying to accomplish, Thirdly, by looking at important factors which need to be observed in designing plants and applying machines to comply with this theory, Lastly, i will put forth some ideas on how we might develop this theory to make the industry more efficient, At the outset, i have to say my approach to this process is entirely new, for those used to applying machines and designing plants on existing criteria, they will find this theory easier

The sedimentation and dewatering characteristics of flocculated slurries are determined by the size and density of the flocs. Studies of the formation and growth of flocs reveal that floc size is limited by breakage of the agglomerates due to shear in the suspension. Floc density measurements indicate that there is an inverse relationship between size and density. This relationship appears to be determined primarily by the nature of the solid particles, especially the size distribution, but it appears that agitation of the suspension can lead to some densification of the flocs, in addition to breakage. It follows that both size and density can be controlled to a significant extent by regulating the physical conditions (agitation, method of flocculant addition etc.) during flocculation. The use of physical floc conditioning to control the sedimentation and dewatering (filtration) behavior of flocculated, fine-particle suspensions is evaluated in terms of its effects on floc size end density.

The mining complex being analyzed consists of four mines and two processing plants located in an area where there are several existing modes of transportation. Figure 1 shows a map of the general layout of the four proposed mines and the two existing processing plants. The mines are identified by the numerals "I" through "IV" and the plants by the letters "A" and "B". A proposed overland conveyor would collect the product from all four mines and convey it to Processing Plant A. Alternate transportation systems are as follows: Railroad transport from Mines I and II to Plant B; Highway trucking from Mines I and II to Plant A; Off-the-road truck haulage from Mine III to Plant B and from Mine IV to Plant A. River transportation from the mines to the processing plants was not considered in this study under the assumption that the high capital investments for the loading and unloading facilities, in addition to difficult traffic problems, would make this mode of transportation unattractive.

The Marlin deposit is a low sulphidation Au-Ag, epithermal system, with reserves of more than five million ounces gold equivalent. Marlin was discovered in December 1998, after a nine months grassroots exploration program in western Guatemala, focused on volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre. Before the Marlin discovery, several gold prospects were found along an east-west corridor of approximately 70 kilometers long, associated to regional faulting systems. The deposit is hosted in faults, within Tertiary andesitic rocks and bedded volcano-sediments. Host-rocks are argillized closer to the surface and propyllitized at depth. Mineralization occurs in multi-stage quartz stockworks and breccia veins.

SOLUTION MINING Solution mining techniques present a means of extracting soluble ores, particularly such materials as salt and potash, from horizons which are not accessible by conventional mining. In the process of dissolving materials, it is evident that solution may be complete or partial. In general, the solution mining operations described in the following section relate to complete solution of the desired compound. Even though the solution of material is complete, there may be instances in which insoluble material is present to a large extent either as granular separated particles or as insoluble layers. The process required for obtaining the desired product involves access wells to reach the deposits, sufficient water supply to yield the production goals, and the development of an underground cavity. The process of solution mining, therefore, depends to a great extent on three factors: availability of a relatively pure strata or formation of salt or potash to be mined, access well or wells, and adequate control of the solutioning process so that enlargement of underground cavities can be fairly well delineated. Since halites represent the most general ores mined by this procedure, the considerations which follow are based primarily on the production of sodium or potassium chloride. The producing formations may be in the form of bedded evc~porites wherein the salt member may be some 30 to 500 ft thick or from salt domes in which great depths of salt occur. Solution mining has been carried out to depths of nearly 10,000 ft. The recovery of saturated brine from wells drilled to effect the solution-mining process leads to further processing. In many instances, the procedures are relatively simple and involve simple recrystallieation or fractional crystallieation, while in others more complex flow systems are required before a final product is obtained. The intent of this section is to provide information relative to the basic procedures for obtaining materials which are soluble in water and to acquaint the engineer with the various aspects of the overall problem which in many instances, may become quite complex and present numerous difficulties. The storage of fluids, particularly hydrocarbons, underground has proven to be a very important part of industry operations. Cavities formed in salt provide excellent storage facilities. The formation of well-defined controlled configurations of such cavities has been possible because of better understanding of the solution process, wide experience gained over nearly 30 yr, and improved technology in drilling and completing wells, surveying caverns, and the operation of numerous types of systems. Solution mining techniques will improve in the future. Many facets of the simple operation of pumping solvents and extracting valuable minerals require further study. Developments undoubtedly will occur to further the processes of mining by solution. In addition to those whose names appear in connection with the individual subjections which follow, a major role in assembling and processing the material in this section was played by Dr. D. A. This paper shows the metallurgical test results that led to the design of the heap leach facilities of Philex Mining Corporation. The design incorporates a water management model as process solution circulation is excessive with high rainfall intensity in the area. This poses problems in the operations requiring stringent controls than would be necessary in a less severe environment. The corporate perspective embraces on environmentally-sound mineral development. A budget is always provided to environmental management making certain that no industrial development is moved forward at the expense of the environment.

"Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR), a satellite-based remote sensing technique, has application for monitoring subsidence with high resolution over short periods. DInSAR uses radar images to measure centimeter-level surface displacements. In the images, ground resolution can be relatively high, with each data point (pixel) representing the average displacement over an area of several square meters. The image data are acquired regularly which allows subsidence to be monitored sequentially over short periods; imaging periods typically range from weeks to months.Monitoring subsidence over short periods with high spatial resolution has potential to provide insight into the dynamics of subsidence and into relationships between mine advance and subsidence. In this study, for three longwall mines in the western United States, initial subsidence occurring at the start of longwall advance is quantified over short periods (12 to 72 days). C-band interferometric wide swath Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from the Sentinel satellites are used to quantify the subsidence. Overall, the data show initial development of subsidence, expansion of the subsidence trough, and the advance of subsidence in the direction of mining.INTRODUCTIONApplied Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR)Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) is a satellite-based remote sensing technique that can be used to quantify small displacements of the Earth’s surface. Using data from the Seasat satellite, which was launched in 1978 (Jet Propulsion Laboratory, 2018), studies by Goldstein, Zebker, and Werner (1988) and by Gabriel, Goldstein, and Zebker (1989) applied Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry to topographic mapping and displacement monitoring. These studies established the potential for broader applications of radar interferometry. Studies by Foxall, Sweeney, and Walter (1998), Wright and Stow (1999), and Carnec and Delacourt (2000) represent some of the earliest evaluations of DInSAR for mine subsidence monitoring. All three of the studies demonstrated the application of DInSAR for quantifying mine subsidence. They also demonstrated difficulty accurately measuring subsidence over long periods due to data decorrelation. DInSAR continues to be evaluated as a tool to quantify surface deformation related to active and historic mining. For example, see Vervoort and Declercq (2018), Wempen and McCarter (2017a), Chen et al. (2013), and Liu et al. (2013). Technologies associated with SAR interferometry continue to develop. Recently launched satellites have relatively high spatial and temporal resolutions, and data processing methods and data accessibility are improving."

New York City's $360 million North River Water Pollution Control Project is part of New York State's plan to clean up the Hudson River. The project is to provide a sewage treatment facility capable of accomodating a peak waste water flow of 330 MGD which will in great measure eliminate the 192 MGD of raw sewage that N. Y. C. discharges into its surrounding waters. Eleven miles of intercepting sewer lines must be constructed along the west side of Manhattan Island to service approximately one-half of the island. The first contract award was for a 4134 ft. sewer tunnel with a finished inside dimension of 16' x 16'. This main intercepting sewer will feed a sewage treatment plant located on and adjacent to the Hudson River. The tunnel is parallel to the river and is located under 12th Avenue between 125th Street and 143rd Street. The Penn- Central Railroad tracks are above and just to one side of the tunnel location. The working tunnel diameter is 21 ft. and numerous problems of support, mining method, and ground control have been encountered. (see Dwg. 1)

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico, including 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. New Mexico leads domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite, and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica, and decorative stone. New Mexico has potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REE), and zircon. Other REE deposits are being explored. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Recent exploration has occurred for beryllium in the San Mateo Mountains, Iron Mountain, and Victorio districts. Companies also are examining High-Ca limestone and High-Mg dolomite for potential development. Aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life and they are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure, and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics and refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate every aspect of daily life, their presence and their role are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the non-metallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a by-product of cleaning natural gas, one of the world's major energy fuels. Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 40% of the more than $2.8 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2013 (Table 1, see APPENDIX). In 2015, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico. This total includes 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. New Mexico leads domestic production in potash, perlite, zeolite, and travertine. Increased technical and legislative analysis by all parties of interest could result in more efficientand better directed regulatory legislation in the mining industry. Efforts to forestall or frustrate legislation through massive lobbying and public relations efforts are seldom effective over time and often lead to more stringent and far reaching legislation than necessary. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 is perhaps an outstanding example of such insufficiences; a future example may well be regulatory surface mine legislation. Although a lack of extensive hard data seldom enables rapid or sophisticated analysis early in the legislative process, even preliminary analysis may be sufficient. Simple statistical analyses of available data, assessment of the legislative rationale, and subjective appraisal of other non-quantifiable constraints to improved mine safety. An average of 115 underground fatalities at an exposure frequency rate of 0.67 can be reasonably expected in the immediate future, under existing levels of technology, degree of regulation, and economic conditions. If gross unrefined estimates of 6 preparation plant, 5 surface, and 30 strip mining fatalities are assumed, the total fatality industry level could be expected to approximate 156 Serious professional, economic, and technical constraints within the the industry probably preclude any major decrease of these accident levels within the near future

Two major Inco matte constituents, chalcocite and heazlewoodite, are separated by differential flotation with diphenylguanidine as collector. A new reagent system involving the use of dextrin as a modifying agent which provides better selectivity has been studied for the last three years. Adsorption tests reveal that while dextrin exhibits high affinity towards heazlewoodite, the adsorption isotherm for dextrin on chalcocite shows only weak interactions. Our electrokinetic measurements confirm such conclusions. Since dextrin interaction with solid surfaces seems to be especially strong when such surfaces are covered by hydroxide layer, our electrokinetic measurements are in line with other researchers' findings who postulated that copper hydroxide is not a stable product on the surface of copper sulphides.
