The drive selected for any piece of machinery must adequately satisfy the application requirements both during the starting interval and at running conditions, All loading possibilities of the drive must be known and allowances made for any adverse limiting conditions such as extreme cold, or perhaps an intermittent excessive loading situation etc. In general, the drive must be selected to provide the required operating characteristics with maximum reliability and at minimum cost. Simplicity of overall design is always an advantage and care must be exercised to insure that systems incorporating unnecessary complicated parts are not indiscriminantly provided. Important non-technical considerations such as equipment avail-ability (on an overseas project) as well as standardization details also play a role in the drive selection process. Additionally, an assessment of the potential capabilities of the personnel that will have to maintain the equipment can have some influence on the final choice. Several types of prime movers are available but this article will restrict itself to the use of induction motors operating from an available alternating current power source. Many drive arrangements are possible, the most common being the direct coupled single motor arrangement. Pyrite is the most common among the group of sulfide minerals in the Earth and abundant in most geological settings. This gangue mineral in association with garnet, hematite, magnetite, and other sulfide minerals acts as an indicator mineral in the Kubi concession of the Asante Gold corporation in Ghana. X-ray diffraction (XRD), air annealing in a furnace, energydispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were applied to investigate the crystal structure, identify individual elements, permanence, transformation, and chemical/electronic properties of such pyrite. The study aims to identify individual elements and to gain an understanding of the surface reaction mechanisms, as well as the properties of precipitated pyrite particles observed during the hydrothermal formation of the ore deposit. XRD shows that pristine and annealed samples contain some hematite and quartz besides pyrite. Results from air annealing indicate that the relationship between pyrite and hematite-magnetite is controlled by temperature. EDX reveals that the sample has O and C as contaminants, while XPS in addition reveals Ba, Au, P, Al, and N. These elements are attributed to pyrite that bonds metallically or covalently to neighboring ligands/impurity minerals such as oxides, chalcogenide sulfides, as well as the gangue alteration minerals of magnetite and hematite in the pyrite sample. These findings suggest that during the hydrothermal flow regime, pyrite, pathfinder elements, and impurity minerals/metals were in contact with quartz minerals before undergoing hematite transformation, which thus becomes an indicator mineral in the Kubi gold concession.

INTRODUCTION Insofar as I am aware, the term rock mechanics was not in the English dictionary in 1930 when I started my graduate program at West Virginia University. Hence, I never thought that I was undertaking studies in rock mechanics when I undertook to write a thesis on the physical properties of West Virginia coal. In this case, the subject was primarily concerned with the compressive strength of coal, the elasticity of the coal, the physical weathering properties of the coal and its friability. These days investigations of rocks pertaining to such properties are included in the term "rock mechanics". Other than this aspect, the principle interest in this part of my program was that I became interested in the strength of coal from the standpoint of structural purposes, and also became cognizant of its elastic properties as well as its energy storing properties. This research also tied in with a remark that Professor Lawall made in a Mining Methods class in 1928 when he remarked that a peculiar thing was happening in the southern part of West Virginia, namely, in the Pocahontas coal field. His remarks were to the effect that pillars were blowing up in the mines and when asked why he replied the cause was not known. The failure of three-inch coal specimens, especially those in stronger coal, in non-hydraulic actuated testing machines was reminiscent of his description of those pillar bursts or bumps.

"The wash ore area on the Mesabi iron range covers a regionof the iron bearing formation extending from Grand Rapids on the west to the Hibbing district, about forty miles eastward. Not all of the developed ore bodies are of wash structure; some are of such grades that they can be shipped direct as merchants able ore. It is safe to say, however, that 65 per cent of the ore is of a possible wash structure and of too high a silica content to be classified as merchantable ore. The increase in the number of washing plants completed each year on the western Mesabi shows that ,the product must be of a structure desirable for furnace operation. Salt dome hosted metallic sulfide deposits are the product of a complex evolutionary system involving halokinesis, cap rock development and diagenesis, and the generation, migration, and accumulation of basinal brines and hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons play an important role in: (1) the production of calcite cap rock which hosts some of the metallic sulfide and sulfur concentrations, and (2) the generation of the reduced sulfur available for metallic sulfide precipitation and sulfur formation. Hydrocarbons and related fluids also are involved in the transporta¬tion and remobilization of the metals. Hydrocarbon consumption, in the course of cap rock development and sulfide mineralization at Hockley dome, is estimated to have been 6.4 million barrels of oil or 114 million cubic feet of methane. Mineral textures, including cap-rock banding, sulfide bands in anhydrite, and fine sulfide mineral banding indicate both episodic fluid influx and fluid compositional differences through time. Features such as pyrite "shells" and sphalerite and marcasite hemispheres may have been localized by hydrocarbon droplets and /or bacterial colonies. Marcasite mineralization in shallow strata above and flanking Hockley dome is best developed over the western and southern parts of the dome. This pattern mimics the known distribution of sulfide mineralization, which is dominantly marcasite, in the underlying cap rock. The iron sulfide paragenetic sequence in the sediments is pyritohedral and cubic + pyrithohedral pyrite followed by marcasite which is encrusted by cubic pyrite. Sulfur isotopic averages for the three stages are +20.8, -20.2, and +6.4 per mil, respectively. These values generally coincide with cap rock sulfate (+20 per mil), cap rock hosted metallic sulfides (-20 to +4 per mil), and sulfur in hydrocarbons (+5.8 per mil). Hydrocarbon compositions indicate provincial variations in oil composition and generation history. Long Point and Boling domes, which have an intergrown sulfide-sulfate-sulfur mineral assemblage indicative of mixed reducing-oxidizing environment, contain oils that are less mature than Hockley dome which appears to be more mineralogically segregated. Sterane biomarker compositions of the oils at Hockley, Long Point and Boling domes indicate a local, dominantly terrestrial source. An oil sample from supracap sandstones on the northeast flank of Hockley dome contained over 750 ppm combined Fe, Zn, Pb, and Co, indicating that hydrocarbons are carrying or remobilizing metals. Cap rock calcite and anhydrite also exhibit provincial variations in strontium isotopic ratios. Calcite and anhydrite cap rocks from several sulfide mineralized domes in the Houston diapir province have strontium isotopic ratios that are more radiogenic than Jurassic sea water (>0.7078). A calcite sample within massive sulfides at Winnfield dome also has a high 87Sr/86Sr ratio (0.7085). Variations in strontium isotopic ratios with strontium content indicate the mixing of at least three Sr-bearing fluids in the cap rock environment, one of which may have been the metal carrier. Anhydrite residues from diapiric salt have strontium ratios up to 0.7100, considerably more radiogenic than Jurassic seawater. These high ratios indicate either that salt and anhydrite recrystallized sometime post-Jurassic in the presence of a fluid with a high 87Sr/86Sr ratio, or that they precipitated in the Jurassic from a fluid with a higher 87Sr/86Sr ratio than Jurassic seawater. Salt domes with cap rocks containing metallic sulfides have only been found in basins that have geopressured zones. Waters from geopressured zones in the vicinity of mineralized salt domes have salinities that are two or more times higher and iron and base metal concentrations that are three to one thousand times higher, than geopressured fluids from other parts of the basin.

This paper presents the preliminary test results obtained using a 0.38-kg/s (3,000-lb/hr) beta prototype MagMill. In processing Upper Freeport coal, the beta prototype recovered 82 % of the weight of the feed and 91 % of the heat content while reducing the potential emissions of sulfur by 61%. Pyritic sulfur in the MagMill product was reduced by 78% compared with that in the feed. For all runs, the mill product particle size was controlled to between 70% and 80% -741m (200 mesh). Recoveries of mercury, arsenic and selenium ranged from 35% to 45% of the amounts found in the feed. Power draw was reduced by 26%, and mill throughput was increased by 9% compared to the pulverizer operating with no magnetic separator attached.

Hydrogen peroxide production was measured during the grinding of a complex sulfide ore, and its oxidizing effect on solid surfaces was investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) with diffuse reflectance attachment measurement. In turn, an attempt was made to correlate the formation of hydrogen peroxide, surface oxidation and sphalerite flotation. Additionally, in order to predict and minimize detrimental production problems due to the recycling of process water in sulfide ore processing, the effects of major components of calcium and sulfate species present in recycled process water and the effect of temperature on sphalerite flotation were investigated through bench-scale flotation tests using complex sulfide ores. The significance of process water species in flotation was studied using tap water, process water and simulated water containing calcium and sulfate ions. Formation of hydrogen peroxide was revealed during the grinding of the complex sulfide ore, and its formation was counteracted by diethylenetriamine (DETA). The FTIR spectrum of the pulp solid fraction showed varying degrees of oxidized surface species, which are related to the concentration of H2O2 analyzed in pulp liquid. Bench-scale flotation using two different complex sulfide ores showed that sphalerite recovery is better in process water than in tap water. Flotation results also indicated a varied recovery of sphalerite at different temperatures in either tap water or process water.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk, either at the commissioning of a concentrator or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-confidence flotation testing (HCFT) was developed for this purpose and is part of the list of technologies at various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of research on this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to the HCFT method and complementary connections between sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. The pit slope angle dictates the economics as much as the depth of the pit. Steeper slope provides more ore reserves, at the same time, the steeper slope presents higher probability of instability and associated maintenance problems. While large open pit mines mostly belonged to nonferrous metals in the past, other mines are becoming deeper as the mine economics permits deeper mine operations, Such minerals include coal, uranium, phosphate, and others. There are some basic differences between an open pit slope and slopes that are encountered in usual civil engineering work such as dam embankments and highway cuts (Figure 1). The stability of the civil engineering slope changes continuously with time due to ground-water movements, weathering, etc. But the stability of the open pit slope (Figure 2) changes more drastically day-to-day or even hour-to-hour, These changes occur because not only is the slope geometry being continuously changed by the mining operation, but also different geology and geologic structures are being exposed on the slope. Even when a particular slope area is not presently being mined, excavation in adjacent areas can affect the general condition of that slope area. A pit will experience some slope failures during its life.

When coal in an oil/water slurry is ground to minus-200-mesh in a ball mill, some of the mill energy, normally wasted as heat, can be usefully recovered to help emulsify the oil. If the discharge flows onto a suitable sized trommel screen, water and ash material are rejected through the screen while coal and oil ball together to give a clean coal product. A small (6-lb/hr) continuous plant has demonstrated the feasibility and the limitations of this process for New Mexico coals.

Talc is an important industrial commodity due to its wide-ranging intrinsic properties; however, the presence of iron oxide hinders its industrial utilization. Herein, we report the purification of Pakistani talc through acid leaching assisted by chlorination techniques. Among various acids (i.e., HF, HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4, Aqua Regia, H3BO3, and CH3COOH), HF was the most effectual, removing up to 67% of iron oxide at optimized conditions of temperature, 90–95 °C; time, 120 min; HF concentration of 5%; and at a pH of 1. In the second step, chlorination of the talc sample was performed separately by both wet chlorination and dry chlorination. Wet chlorination was carried out using KMnO4 and HCl in slurry phase which shown about 52% removal of iron oxide, whereas dry chlorination with CaCl2 at high temperature attained about 48% removal of iron oxide from talc sample. Further, the wet chlorination of HF leached samples was also performed under optimized conditions which showed up to 87% iron oxide removal. The original and treated talc samples were characterized by EDX and XRD analysis to monitor the changes in the elemental and mineralogical composition of the talc. It can be concluded that HF leaching followed by wet chlorination is an effective method for the upgradation of low-grade Pakistani talc ores.

"Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) Segmental Tunnel Linings have successfully been used for over 20 years in the UK and have been adopted in a number of high profile projects such as High Speed 1, Crossrail, Thames Tideway, as well as High Speed 2. Tunnel linings and especially SFRC design are not covered in the Eurocodes. This shortage of SFRC tunnel design rules seems to be partially addressed by several international publications. However, in the UK, the ‘design-assisted by testing’ (DAT) approach has also been adopted. The Paper discusses the UK’s best design practice and focuses on the DAT methodology as applied in the case of the 6.9km (4.3miles), 7.8m (25.6 feet) ID Lining for the £635million Lee Tunnel Project. The design approach, the full scale testing at the Building Research Establishment (BRE), and the construction innovations are presented. This experience will be transferred to the £4billion Thames Tideway Tunnel.INTRODUCTIONSteel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) has been used for Tunnel segments for more than 20 years. The first application of SFRC in the UK was for the Heathrow Baggage tunnel (1994). Since then significant size tunnels have been designed and constructed, such as the Jubilee Line (1999) High Speed 1 (CTRL, 2006), Crossrail (2014), Lee Tunnel (2014) and the scheduled 25km Thames Tideway (‘Super Sewer’) and High Speed 2 rail tunnels. However one the main obstacles in achieving streamlined design and improving efficiency are the lack of appropriate design guidelines for SFRC tunnel segments. This issue will – to some extent – be addressed by a number of current documents on tunnel FRC design either being produced by BSi (PAS8810, expected 2016), ACI (544.R) and ITAtech (Design Guideline PCFRC, 2015) in an effort to advance the design of SFRC and take into consideration the recent developments in Steel and Macro-Synthetic FRC technology."

Roadheaders are commonly used in coal mines for roadway excavations. The prediction of roadheader performance is necessary for the planning of roadway projects and the estimation of costs. Recently, a new rock mass cuttability classification (RMCC) system has been introduced for roadheaders used in coal mines. In this study, the validity of the RMCC system was investigated for different types of roadheaders and different coal mines. Four different coal mines were visited, and the performance measurements of different axial and transverse roadheaders were carried out during the excavation of roadways. Uniaxial compressive strength, volumetric joint count, the strike and dip of joints, joint aperture, the Cerchar abrasivity index, and water ingress were determined in field and laboratory studies to calculate the RMCC index. The analysis of the data demonstrated that the correlation coefficients between the net cutting rates and the RMCC indices were higher than 0.94, suggesting that the RMCC system was valid. It was concluded that the RMCC system could be reliably used for the evaluation of roadheader performance in coal mines.

"In recognition of his inspiring dedication to the mining industry through education, research contributions and dissemination of practical knowledge, exceptional leadership and excellence in mining engineering practice and for his lecture, “You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.” Recipient of the 2002 D.C. Jackling Award Introduction It is always difficult to decide on the most appropriate title to give to a paper or talk. It is a particularly difficult decision in the case of the Jackling Lecture, because the title becomes part of the award citation. I hope that the significance of this unusual title will become crystal clear as you read the pages that follow. However, to assist you in this journey, I will provide the following few words of guidance. In making a cake, you need the proper ingredients. If one or more of them are missing, it will not be a cake. In addition, the quality of the cake depends on the quality of the ingredients. In my lecture, the "cake" is the U.S. mining industry of the future. A national perspective President George W. Bush in his State of the Union Address (Bush, 2002) delivered on January 29, 2002, defined three national objectives: •win the war on terrorism, •protect the homeland and •revitalize the economy. Under the heading "revitalize the economy," he indicated the importance of "good jobs" and "energy production" by saying: "Good jobs begin with good schools. Good jobs also depend on reliable and affordable energy. This Congress must act to encourage conservation, promote technology, build infrastructure and it must act to increase energy production at home so America is less dependent on foreign oil." I wish that he would have broadened his focus and stated instead that: "This Congress must act to encourage conservation, promote technology, build infrastructure, and it must act to increase materials production at home so America is less dependent on foreign sources." With regard to jobs, all jobs are not equal. To paraphrase John Reeves of MidContinent Resources (Reeves, 2002): "If our nation is to prosper, we all cannot make a living by doing each other's wash. Some of us, at least, must be actively engaged in the primary production of raw materials from the riches of the earth and other Americans must turn those materials into consumer products." The unfortunate trend in our country has been to neglect the primary production of basic materials, even those coming next in line. We have left those responsibilities to others while we concentrate instead on performing various services, i.e., doing each other's wash and flipping burgers. This cannot continue. It must be remembered, especially by those in leadership positions, that all "jobs" are not created equal. Some jobs are much more essential to the security and wellbeing of our country than others. We must be sure that the important ones are in place. We cannot produce the basic materials that our nation requires without access to those materials. This leads to my Proposition 1: You cannot have a viable mining industry without a clearly enunciated, positive U.S. materials policy. Background regarding U.S. materials policy Resources for freedom. In January 1951, President Truman created the President's Materials Policy Commission, with William S. Paley as chairman. As expressed in the invitation letter from the president to Paley: This commission, within the executive office of the president, is to study the broader and longer-range aspects of the nation's materials problems as distinct from the immediate defense needs. The task of the commission is to make an objective inquiry into all major aspects of the problem of assuring an adequate supply of production materials for our long-range needs and to make recommendations that will assist me in formulating a comprehensive policy on such materials. The commission should study, together with any other aspects deemed by it to be pertinent, such questions relating to production materials as: - the long-range requirements outlook; - the long-range supply outlook; - the prospect and estimated extent of shortages; - the consistency and adequacy of existing government policies, plans and programs; and - the consistency and adequacy of private industry practices.

Roof bolting typically follows the extraction of a commodity to help keep the roof from collapsing. During 2004 to 2013, roof bolter operators had the highest number of machinery-related injuries, accounting for 64.7 percent, at underground coal mines. This paper analyzes U.S. roof bolter fatal and nonfatal lost-time injury data at underground work locations for all commodities from 2004 through 2013 and determines risk indices for six roof bolting tasks. For fatal and nonfatal incidences combined, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were bolting, handling of materials, setting the temporary roof support (TRS), drilling, tramming, and traversing. For fatalities, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were handling of materials, setting the TRS, bolting, drilling, traversing, and tramming. Age was found to be a significant factor. Severity of injury, indicated by days lost, was found to increase with increasing age as well as with increasing experience, largely due to the confounding of age and experience. The operation of the roof bolting machine used in underground mining should be a research priority given the high frequency and severity of incidents. The results also suggest that temporal factors may exist, so additional research is warranted to better understand these factors and potentially develop interventions. This research provides a datadriven foundation from which future research can be conducted for safety interventions to reduce the frequency and severity of incidences involving the roof bolter activities of bolting, handling of materials, and setting the TRS.

In several investigations the correlation has been studied between the fuel consumption and the reducibility of the charged material in the zone of indirect reduction in the blast furnace (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). It has been found that increased reducibility allows greater gas utilization which accordingly lowers the fuel consumption. In direct reduction units this relation has not yet been fully established partly owing to the lack of accurate test methods and experience with different materials as regards reducibility. However, since the production rate in a direct reduction unit is closely related to the time required to reach high degrees of reduction, the reducibility must be regarded as one of the most important properties of the material.

A closed grinding circuit, typified by a ball mill-cyclone combination, is often required to treat a feed comprised of a variety of minerals of differing properties. Usually, the individual behaviour of the minerals is not assessed, a procedure which requires sizing and metal or mineralogical assaying of each size fraction. Further, sizing is frequently by screening to perhaps 325 mesh meaning that detail on the important -44 um fraction is unavailable. It is well appreciated that minerals can exhibit both individual classifying and grinding behaviour. Recognizing that cyclone classification results from differential centrifugal settling and acceleration rates, then minerals of differing specific gravity will exhibit individual mineral cyclone performance curves. If the minerals have differing grindabilities, then individual mineral rates of breakage may be expected. When treating an ore containing minerals of a range in specific gravity and/or grindability, individual mineral behaviour in the closed-circuit grind could be notable and perhaps important to the overall concentrator performance. An example is a lead-zinc ore, as shown by Kelsall et al.(1,2) This paper describes the individual mineral cyclone performance curves at sizes down to ti 10 um for the four major minerals at two lead-zinc concentrators; the Sullivan concentrator at Kimberley, British Columbia, and the Pine Point Mines concentrator at Pine Point, North West Territories, both operated by Cominco Ltd. In addition, individual mineral grinding behaviour for the four major minerals at the Sullivan concentrator is presented.

Effective October 1, 1958, President Eisenhower imposed, by Presidential Order, fixed import quotas on lead metal and lead concentrates and also on zinc metal and zinc concentrates. He did this in response to an escape clause case under the Trade Agreements Act filed by many of the large and small lead and zinc mining companies in September 1957. It is the purpose of this paper to give the experience of the lead-zinc industry under this order during its first two years and some observations on what might have come about under different conditions of U.S.A. consumption. Before considering these various experiences and observations, it seems wise to first outline briefly the basic problem which prompted such an order. Under the Tariff Act of 1930, the duty on pig lead was fixed at 2-l/8¢ per pound and slab zinc at 1-3/4e; per pound. The ores, concentrates and closely related products of these metals carried closely related duty rates. The Trade Agreements Act of 1934 and succeeding similar acts had given the, President the power to lower these and other duties. As a result-of various negotiations with foreign nations, by 1951 these duties had been lowered to their present day rates of 1-1/16 per pound on' pig lead and 7/10o, per pound on slab zinc. Related ores, concentrates and semi-fabricated forms of the metals received commensurate treatment. Under these acts, the Tariff Commission has the right to recommend to the President duty increases, specific quotas or both if find that imports have injured the affected industry. He has the right to accept or reject such recommendations, in whole or in part, in the light of the national interest,

The explosion hazard presented by methane gas in coal is confronted daily in the mining industry. Research has developed several viable methods for gas control in addition to conventional dilution by ventilation. Such methods include the drilling of horizontal or cross-measure boreholes from a mine opening and vertical boreholes hydraulically stimulated in advance of mining or for gob gas drainage. The long-term production history of five gas drainage installations was studied. Three installations were completed in the Pittsburgh Coalbed: two in West Virginia and one in Pennsylvania. The remaining installations were completed in the Mary Lee Coalbed in Alabama and the Sunnyside Coalbed in Utah. The types of drainage methods utilized included horizontal and vertical boreholes. The length of production studied ranged from 860 days to 36 years. The cumulative production from the five sites was in excess of 155 Mm3, representing a significant volume of gas.

COM Energy, Inc., a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, has constructed a 1.6 million hectoliter-per-year COM plant in Jacksonville, Florida. COM will be distributed to customers in the region as a substitute for fuel oil presently burned in boilers and kilns. As the market for COM grows, COM Energy, Inc. expects to build additional units both in this country and overseas. This paper addresses the overall status and technical aspects of the project, focusing on the facilities for COM production and utilization.
