High speed cameras were used to view the behavior of underground openings during the passage of ground shock generated by an underground nuclear detonation. Movies from these experiments were shown and a general discussion of the media properties, ground support utilized, and general information gained was presented. Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems are currently recognized as a necessary tool for the management of projects. Currently, CAD is used for TBM and conveyor setups, concrete lift design and overall constructability reviews. Typically, such CAD models exist only in 2 dimensions. The advent of more powerful computers, enhanced CAD programs and after market animation packages provides tremendous potential to the Tunneling industry. In particular, effective application of these technologies enhances cost, time and quality in field operations.

A series of salicylaldoxime derivatives with alkyl group substitution in the main chain and the side chain were synthesized and evaluated for the flotation of malachite, cerussite and smithsonite. The effect of chain length and the position of the substituent group on the selectivity of separation amongst oxidized copper, lead and zinc minerals are discussed in this paper.

The sodium smectitic clays (bentonites), have more industrial applications in that class of mineral, a driving force to obtain this mineral. In Brazil, there are several occurrences of smectitic clays, unfortunately they are polycationic, with a distribution of several exchangeable cations, where the cation sodium occurs in minor quantity. In this work, the original polycationic smectitic clay was firstly proper characterized and then treated with sodium carbonate obtaining homoionic sodium smectitic clay. The rheological tests in the optimized sodium smectitic clay showed good results for drilling fluids, typical of a sodium bentonite ones.

It details some of the problems and solutions of handling and erecting precast concrete segments in a small bore soft ground tunnel. This is a response to M. J. Hrebar's paper, which tracks in detail the highly productive stripping capabilities of modern large bulldozers at two separate installations. It proves the old adage "economies of scale" and quantifies the advantage of being able to move large loads of dirt over comparatively short haul distances by sliding rather than carrying the load. This discussion examines whether a bulldozer is the most efficient way of using this geotechnical principle.

Gold The gold market generally was listless in 1992, although investors returned to the metal in the fourth quarter. The gold price declined for the second year in a row, averaging $11.05/g ($343.76/ oz), 5.2% lower than the $11.65/g ($362.44/oz) seen in 1991. The average price has declined more than 23% since 1987, when gold averaged $14.36/g

The West Seattle Tunnel is part of a regional sewer conveyance system located in Seattle Washington. The tunnel was constructed for the Waste Water Treatment Division of the King County Department Of Natural Resources, from June of 1995 through the first quarter of 1997. The Geologic setting for this soft-ground tunnel consists of glacial, interglacial, glacio-lacustrine, and alluvial soils. This paper, prepared jointly by the owner and con-tractor, will describe project-related site geology, engineering considerations, construction, and dispute resolution/avoidance practices.

In many parts of the world, pyrite and arsenopyrite occur together in sulphide ores either as the only sulphide minerals or in conjunction with other valuable sulphides. It is desirable to produce separate concentrates of the various sulphide minerals, including pyrite and arsenopyrite, so that the contained desirable metals can be recovered economically. It is common, for instance, for gold in an ore containing both pyrite and arsenopyrite to be associated almost exclusively with the arsenopyrite. It is desirable in this instance to produce an arsenopyrite concentrate for gold recovery while rejecting the barren pyrite.

The preoccupation with cyanide as an environmental issue has been described as virtually an obsession for state and federal agencies enacting regulations for environmental protection. This seems likely to continue in legislative planning, as well. This is despite the fact that the only significant group of cyanide-related incidents has been the bird-mortality occurrences, predominantly in arid areas, and these have been greatly reduced by a concerted effort by operators. What follows is a brief list of areas for which the industry may need either additional information or plans for defensive strategies over the next two to five years.

Very little has been published about Cia de Minas Buena­ventura. Don Alberto Benavides Quintana, now in his seventies, founded the company in 1953. This venerable gentleman is a Doyon of the Peruvian mining industry and more has been known about him than about his company. Buenaventura is a highly profitable gold producer with excellent potential to expand gold production in joint ventures with Newmont, Southern Peru Copper (ASARCO), and BRGM as well by developing their own new gold mines. On September 15, The Wall Street Journal published an article titled "Peru's Big Rebound Sets Off Foreign Investors' Enthusiasm."
