A computer aided design software system for long range coal surface mine planning has been developed by the authors. The system is composed of two subsystems: a coal deposite sub- system and a long range mine planning system. The geological parameters are estimated and a grid model is formed, then a 3-D block model can be developed for mining design. The long range surface mine planning system is based on oriented graph simulation and combined approaches to seek for the optimal deign alternative. This mining model consists of a number of sub-models to realize mining design functions such as: calculation of mining volume and coal quality by graph scanning; determination of operational stripping ratio by interactive design; varification of annual coal production; delimitation and development of dumping site; optimization of material flow direction and volumes by Linear Programming; surface mine production scheduling by interactive iteration; etc. The software package was developed on PC computer 486. It features classified menu guide, module structure, figure and graph representation on the screen and flexible interactive functions. This system has been applied to an open cut coal mine and predicted functions have been obtained.

Injecting pressurized water into a coalbed prior to mining reduces mining-generated respirable dust. Because of economic and geological barriers, water infusion for longwall dust control in the United States is now limited to the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed in Virginia. Water is pumped into the coalbed through underground boreholes that are drilled horizontally from the headgate toward the tailgate side of retreat longwall panels. This paper theorizes that the barriers to widespread utilization of water infusion for longwall dust control could be overcome by long-duration, low-pressure water infusion through vertical gob-gas boreholes. Currently, 43% of the 72 longwall mines in the United States employ vertical gob-gas boreholes. Computer coalbed-reservoir simulation suggests that one vertical surface borehole could infuse the same longwall panel area as four horizontal boreholes in the current water-infusion system for longwall dust control in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed.

Thin-seam mining presents unique challenges when management or economic conditions require significant productivity increases. These challenges can be further amplified depending on such factors as labor unions, federal and state regulations and market characteristics. This article explores the turnaround situation occurring at Tanoma Mining Co. (TMC), a medium-sized, underground coal mining company in central Pennsylvania. The company has used a systematic approach of improving management controls and direction, labor relations and communications to improve its cash flow from negative to positive within a projected five-year span. An intensive upgrade-rebuild-replacement program for mining equipment and systems has also been established to support other management activities. Discussion Thin-seam coal mining is an industry within the broader industry of coal mining. Thin seam mining faces the same cost pressures and engineering problems as its higher-seam competitors, without the advantages of moving volume per foot of extracted material. To stay at economic parity with others requires additional creativity within the management team to extract higher productivity gains from the existing workforce and mining systems. The Tanoma operation is a deep mine in Indiana County, PA, about one hour northeast of Pittsburgh. Coal is extracted from the Lower Kittanning "B" seam. A few years ago during a Southeastern Geological Society field trip, a professor from a Florida university and a trip leader commented at one of the stops, "... and for those of you interested in the geology ...." More recently, in the spring of 1992, a geology faculty member at another southeastern university remarked, "Field geology is obsolete." An interviewee for a potential assistant position stated that he had never had a field class. This would-be assistant was to receive his Master's Degree in-Geology within a few days from yet another southeastern university. A regional illness? Certainly not, but symptomatic of the general health of Geology. Capitulation to Environmental Sciences seems to be in vogue with Geology becoming a four-letter word and the mention of mining is verboten regardless of the company. These trends permeate our profession while the demands for earth materials increase, often exponentially. Efficiency, a word lost on government, is routinely expected of business--our business--the industrial minerals geologist and producer. Our stage shrinks but the responsibilities expand. Studies were carried out to determine whether filtration rate changes observed in an iron ore concentrator were due to variations in particle shape. It was confirmed that ores mined from different locations differed in filtration rates by as much as 60%. However, when image analysis was used to quantify the shapes of the individual particles in the filtration feed, it was found that the particle shapes showed almost no variation, and the shapes did not correlate with the filtration rate. It was also determined that the filtration rate variations were not caused by changes in particle size distribution. These results suggest that the differences in filtration rate are due to factors other than size and shape, such as surface chemistry.

Bromide stabilizes the auric or aurous ion by forming a stable complex in acidic aqueous solution. The oxidizing agent normally used for the process is bromine, which is a corrosive liquid with high vapour pressure. This is, in fact, the main reason why it has not found acceptance yet as an industrial oxidant for gold. Ferric ion with hydrogen peroxide and/or sodium hypochlorite have already proved to be effective oxidants for the dissolution of gold from a rotating disc in a bromide-containing aqueous solution. In the present work, preliminary tests with four selected ore samples were tested to evaluate the dissolution of gold with the same system already tested with the rotating disc (Br-/Fe3+/H2o2/NaCIO). Compared to the conventional cyanidation, results were superior in one instance only. The major obstacle seems to be the maintenance of a suitable potential to allow the complex formation. However, the studied system may be interesting, is in some situations it may yield better results than conventional cyanidation; therefore, further investigation seems to be worth doing.

The boron review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. The United States was the world's second largest producer and the largest consumer of boron compounds during 1991. According to the US Bureau of Mines, boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the US totaled about 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st), yielding about 608 kt (670,000 st) of BO, in 1991. Total estimated value was $440 million. That level of production was equal to 1990 revised production figures. Value was greater by $37 million, however, reflecting a strengthening of boron product prices. The US continued to supply essentially all its own boron while maintaining a strong position as a source to foreign markets of sodium borate products and boric acid. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1991 remained at 1100 people, about the same level as in 1989. The Bureau of Mines estimated total world production of boron in 1991 - mineral concentrate and chemical - at about 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st). That corresponds to about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) of BO ,. World production in 1991 was about equal to revised 1990 levels. US production Mines and processing operations in southern California were the only domestic sources of boron mineral concentrates and chemicals in 1991. US producers, in order of quantity of production, were US Borax and Chemical Corp., North American Chemical Co., and American Borate Co.

Lateral migration of leach solution in heaps and dumps is attributed to two phenomena. One is site-specific anisotropic conditions that exist on a macroscopic scale on the surface or within the rock piles. The second is associated with a random walk phenomenon that causes dispersion of solution, especially at gradients in flow or hydrostatic pressure. The latter phenomenon is a general condition that will occur in any leaching operation. Its effects are modeled by computer analysis and are compared with available field data on heap leaching. Under appropriate assumptions, the observed 58° angle of solution dispersion can be reproduced by the model. The combined effects of both anisotropy and random walk are also discussed. Finally, the impact of lateral solution flow on actual leaching operations is considered.

This paper reviews the state-of -the-art techniques for estimating the duration of post- mining subsidence arising from different mining techniques and evaluates existing post-mining liability systems in the United States and abroad. For each mining technique (room-and-pillar and longwall) the mechanism of subsidence development is examined and the critical factors influencing the duration of subsidence are evaluated. These are followed by a comprehensive summary of field data on the duration of subsidence movements collected in various parts of the world. Using this information, graphical charts are developed to depict the relationship between the time duration and critical controlling factors. Also included are any mathematical relationships that may exist between the different variables. Finally, a survey of current state, federal and foreign legislation on mine operator liability time spans is provided. These laws are evaluated for their applicability in light of the data on duration of residual subsidence. On the basis of this evaluation, guidelines are suggested for the establishment of the mine operator liability structure for the United States.

An analysis of the interaction between a creeping rock and a yieldable lining is presented. The following cases are considered: an elastic lining, a lining made of circular shaft rings that may slide at their joints, a lining made of circular reinforced concrete panels with wooden compressible strips inserted between the longitudinal joints and a yieldable support that has a compressible broken-rock stratum between the support and plane rock. By formulating a mathematical model for the rock-lining interaction, one can optimize the sequence of excavation-lining application. To keep costs to a minimum, one can also choose the most appropriate lining for the corresponding rheological properties of the rock.

INTRODUCTION In urbanized area with heavy street traffic and with environmental requirements to lessen construction noise and vibration, the cut-and-cover is not always a feasible method to build a small diameter tunnel for sewage, water or other utilities. That is where the use of the shield machine to bore such a small diameter tunnel should be considered as a more acceptable alternative. Although the shield machine of this type should be small enough to meet specific requirements for a given tunnel, it should be big enough to provide some working space inside of the tunnel. Recently, we have successfully developed the fully mechanized small diameter tunneling method which enables us to bore a tunnel as small as 600mm in finished diameter. This paper discusses the concept of this newly developed method, including a case history where sewage tunnels of 800mm finished diameter were constructed by using this method. OUTLINE OF METHOD Developed from the original slurry shield pipe-jacking tunneling method, this method is highly automated so that all operations inside of the tunnel can be remotely controlled. Relationships among mining industry, society and environment have been historically complex due to its environmental impacts. In the Chilean mining industry, repetitive and small spills of fuel during maintenance of machinery have been adsorbed by desert soils and sawdust to control environmental pollution. The froth flotation is the main technology to recover specific mineralogical species from sulphide ores. Flotation reagents are expensive and representing an environmental risks due to its physics properties. Our objective was to investigate the feasibility of applying bioremediation as a cost-effective alternative technology to physical-chemical treatments and to evaluate the efficacy of biosolids as foaming agents. Our results show that the bioremediation is feasible by use of the autochthonous microbial communities and biosolids could be used as new environmental-friendly organic reagents. This research discloses a sustainable bioremediation process and industrial ecology model based on these two successful cases.

This paper addresses the problem of seeing into rock. We will consider two methods, first to use radar, or electromagnetic wave pulses, to probe into rock ahead of mining and second to use sonar, or sound wave pulses, to probe into rock. Both are non destructive and capable of giving information on hazards ahead of mining. Such hazards might be a borehole full of water possibly leading to a high pressure aquifer somewhere above the mine level, changes in rock type, or the edge or top of a salt dome. Most of the work described in this paper deals with probing through rock salt which we have done successfully to over 2000 meters maximum range. We discuss first the radar probing and then the sonar probing. In April 1982, the contracting Companies, ABV of Sweden and Hoyer-Ellefsen of Norway forming the Consorcio Escandinavo Agoyan, signed the contract for the construction of the civil works of the Agoyan Hydroelectric Project, located in Ecuador, South America. The project is located in the Andes mountain region of Ecuador - one of the smaller countries in this part of the world, located on the Pacific Coast. The contract was signed with the Instituto Ecuatoriano de Electrificación (INECEL), a public institution in charge of the development of all major energy producing projects in Ecuador, for a value of approximately US$ 120,000,000. The contract's main elements are - Concrete gravity dam with a total volume of approximately 210,000 cu m. A large number of diverse size reduction machines is currently available for the comminution of waste materials. Equipment selection is determined by the nature of the material to be treated and by its behavior under external mechanical stressing. Accordingly, wastes can be divided into those with elastictbrittle and those with ductile/viscous behavior. The scientific understanding of the comminution of wastes is lagging strongly as compared to that of the grain-shaped mineral raw materials. Only in a few unique cases have the fundamentals of the comminution of ductile or viscous materials been presented. The paper centers on a characterization and systematic analysis of the types of stress fundamental to comminution. On the basis of this discussion an overview is presented of the currently available technologies for the comminution of wastes, with attention centering on those machines designed for materials with ductile or viscous behavior.

Burrier pillars in underground coal mines could eventually be subjected to a water head due to the build-up of mine water in the old workings. The water head could not only act ns a force to destabilize the pillar, but it could also cause seepage flow through the pillar and its surrounding strata. Excessive seepage flow could induce piping failure that, ill turn, could accelerate the mechanical failure process of the barrier pillars. In this paper, a finite element simulation approach was employed in the evaluation of the barrier pillars. Both the stress distribution and the seepage flow pattern in and around a barrier pillar have been simulated numerically. The lithium review did not arrive in time for publication in the June issue The estimated consumption of lithium minerals as raw materials to the glass, ceramic and metallurgical industries in 1992 was 85.5 kt (94,200 st). That equates to about 12 kt (13,200 st) of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). An additional 150 kt to 200 kt (165,000 to 220,000 st), or 7.5 kt to 10 kt (8200 to 1100 st LCE), were used in the production of lithium chemicals. The 1992 consumption represents an overall decrease of 3.5 kt (3800 st), or 500 t (550 st) LCE, from 1991. This was a direct result of a worldwide reduction in glass demand due to the economic recession. There are three major producers of lithium minerals. Gwalia Consolidated Ltd. (formerly Lithium Australia Ltd.) in Western Australia and Tantalum Mining Corp. (Tanco) in Manitoba, Canada, both produce spodumene ore. Bikita Minerals, in Zimbabwe, is the largest producer of petalite. Bikita also has the capacity to produce small volumes of spodumene concentrate. The Cyprus Foote spodumene operation at Kings Mountain, NC, ceased production in 1992. It once produced about 2 kt/a (2200 stpy) of "high iron spodumene" for uses other than in the manufacture of lithium chemicals. The lithium products of the major producers are shown in Table 1. The current resources of 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of LCE in the western world will supply demand for more than 50 years.

Recent research conducted by NIOSH's Pittsburgh Re¬search Laboratory showed that electrical current levels permitted under present regulations may not limit cable temperatures to less than 90°C in reeled trailing cables. Reeled cables, which are tightly wrapped with many turns and which carry current in an enclosed space, can become overheated due to poor heat transfer. This overheating can cause the cable insulation to soften, making them prone to damage. The damaged insulation reduces the life of the cable and can lead to shock, electrocution and mine fires. This paper describes a method of measuring the conductor tem¬perature of mine trailing cables during normal operation. The temperature is measured using a 50/125-, µm graded index multimode optical fiber located in the center of the metallic conductors. Distributed temperature measurements are made using an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). This system is capable of measuring temperatures with an accuracy of ± I °C over a length of 4 km at I -mintervals. With this unique way of measuring temperature, tests can be conducted that simulate actual mine conditions. Cutter roof failure is one of the most common ground control problems affecting the safety and economy of an underground coal mine operation. Several attempts were made in the past to understand the processes responsible for cutter development and to devise mitigating measures. Yet, many cutter failures still happen and their advance prediction remains as elusive as before. One of the reasons for the impasse in predicting cutters lies in the limitations of the current numerical modeling technologies. The development and propagation of cutters is a progressive phenomenon and continuum models can only approximate this process. Since the discontinuum modeling is severely restricted by the lack of reliable input data, alternatives must be sought to better understand cutter failures using the continuum models. This paper proposes one approach using strain-softening material model to simulate the cutter initiation and propagation process. An attempt has also been made to provide some insights into the reasons for the change in cutter location at different parts of a development layout.

INTRODUCTION This paper deals with the main components in exploring for and developing a gold ore deposit. It addresses geology, exploration drilling, ore reserves, and evaluation criteria in an integrated manner to present an overall picture. Gold forms such a small component of a gold ore body, that particular care should be taken in dealing with the data from a developing deposit. The paper lists the main gold ore deposit types and their character. Their differences, as well as differences to other types of ore deposits, are important to understanding exploration approaches, and problems of ore reserve definition. Gold exploration has enjoyed a great boom in recent years. Many new ore deposits have been developed but experience shows that definition of gold is not a simple straight forward process and this outline attempts to point out some of the important aspects of ore reserve definition including some pitfalls. GOLD DEPOSIT TYPES The Witwatersrand deposits in South Africa produce about 50% of the world's gold. The gold occurs as fine grains in thin beds within gently dipping quartz pebble fan conglomerates usually with associated pyrite grains. It is characterized by rather uniform distribution of gold along thin layers within the conglomerate.
