The Cerro Vanguardia mine is an AngloGold Limited operation in southern Argentina that includes multiple open pits and a hybrid Merrill-Crowe and CIL circuit to recover gold and silver from oxide ore. Operations were commissioned at the site in 1998, which included a plant in the metallurgical circuit to recover cyanide from mill tailings. The cyanide recovery plant was initially configured to process tailings slurry and achieved greater than 90% cyanide recovery from tailings containing about 600 to 800 mg/L WAD cyanide (as CN). The cyanide recovery circuit was operated in this manner for approximately eight months, during which time the consumption of sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide was relatively high, leading to high rates of scale formation in the acidification tank and stripping towers. In July 1999, several piping changes were made in the cyanide recovery system to permit its operation with clear solution, which reduced the sulphuric acid consumption and eliminated scale formation in process equipment. The cyanide recovery system currently operates with a two-stage counter-current decantation (CCD) circuit which provides clear solution for processing in the cyanide recovery plant. The cyanide recovery efficiency now averages about 90% to 92% from solution containing about 350 mg/L WAD cyanide (as CN). Recovered sodium cyanide now accounts for about two-thirds of the total cyanide added to the leaching circuit. This paper presents a description of the cyanide recovery plant and details regarding its current operating efficiency.

In this investigation, the differences in the absorption spectra of etheramines, fatty amines and condensates, mostly present as acetates, from several suppliers are characterized by means of infrared spectrometry. Sharp differences were observed in the absorption spectra of three types of amines and derivatives. Etheramines show a characteristic and well-defined peak at 1,114 cm-1. This peak is due to the ether C-O group and differentiates etheramines from the other classes. The absence of such a peak indicates that the species is not an etheramine. The distinction between condensates and fatty amines is made by the presence of a sharp peak around 3,200 cm-1. This peak is probably due to the proximity of the N-H amine groups and C=O carbonyl groups in the amide portion of the condensate's molecule and by different and better-defined bands in the 1,800- to 1,500-cm-1 range. The flotation performance of these amines was evaluated by means of the laboratory-scale flotation of an itabirite ore. The etheramines proved to be the most effective collectors for this system. Monoamines presented better performance than diamines for the ore under investigation.

A longterm overburden removal plan can be realistic and optimum only when the cost and capacity profiles off the equipment assigned to the operation are taken into consideration. Therefore, the planning should involve the proper assignment of equipment capacity by insuring a timely investment and a timely replacement policy throughout the mine life. A dynamic solution algorithm has been developed, by which all possible truck fleet alternatives are evaluated for each year off the operation. Cumulative cost off the operation is carried throughout the analysis. The optimum solution is obtained by selecting the minimum cumulative cost at the last year and tracing backward the best fleet alternative for each year. The solution provides: 1. the optimum amount of overburden to be removed each year; 2. the best fleet to be assigned to the job; and 3. the best equipment replacement policy.

This study deals with the mineralogical-geochemical characteristics and the industrial usage of the olivine from the dunites that crop out on the west of the Topuk village (Orhaneli). Mineralogical compositions of non-altered dunite samples are averagely as: Olivine (>90%), serpentine (1-4 %), opaque minerals especially chromite, magnetite, pyrite (1-3 %), and secondary minerals as magnesite, chlorite (1-2 %). X-Ray Diffractograms of the dunite samples indicate that olivines are in forsterite (93 on an average) composition, and chlinochrysotile and lizardite accompany to the forsterite. Chemical analyses of the dunites show that MgO, SiO2, Fe-,03 and LOI contents vary from 40,99 to 50,2 %, 34,67 to 40,6 %, 6,8 tol3,7 %, 0,11 to 11,27 %, respectively. SE-TAT Mining Company states that the study area has 400.000.000 tonnes proved, 800.000.000 tonnes probable and totally 1.200.000.000 tonnes olivine reserve. Consequently, all studies indicate that Orhaneli Olivin has convenient mineralogical and chemical properties and the grain size (0.04-40 mm) for industrial usages such as abrasive, olivine sand products, steel slag conditioner, balast and covering material in industry: Orhaneli olivines are demanded especially from the firms related to refractory industry, iron-steel factories, naval forces and shipyards. A flexible expert system for a personal computer has been developed to take countermeasures for prevention of emergency in underground coal mines. The system makes a diagram to estimate maximum airflow rate of a specified branch such as coal face or advancing face, etc. under the conditions of opening regulators set in any two different branches, by computer simulation. The system approximates the ventilating condition underground by using both measured values and safety factor derived from the rules in the system. The probability of happening gas explosion, spontaneous combustion and mine fire underground is shown on a display and countermeasures in a data base in the system are selected according to a confidence factor. When it is recognized in the system that either safety factor or confidence factor of countermeasure has a small value, the system sends information relating to reasoning in the system to registered human experts by computer communi¬cation and facsimile. The replies in file transfer from the experts are stored in the system and reconsultations for estimation of underground condition are started automatically. As the replies in facsimile are shown on the display, user inputs new rules and, values for reconsultation. It is shown that the system is available to take better countermeasures as the condition' of a network in coal mine is changed by mining day by day.

Workers in coal preparation plants, where vibrating screens are significant noise sources, are often exposed to sound levels exceeding 90 dB(A). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a major coal company, and a vibrating screen manufacturer conducted a cooperative study of vibrating screen noise. Rubber isolators reduced sound levels by 1 dB. Urethane screen panels did not reduce sound levels in this case. Drive noise was determined to be the dominant noise source on the screen. Damped side plates reduced vibration levels on the screen sides by 1 to 7 dB(A). Detailed results of the study are presented.

Silver Bell is located about 56 km (35 miles) northwest of Tucson, AZ. It is a classic porphyry copper deposit containing enriched disseminated chalcocite ore in altered porphyritic rocks with chalcopyrite in adjacent skarn zones. The discovery of Silver Bell was an evolutionary process that occurred over a 75-year period. Recorded mining activity began about 1865 on Boot Hill east of El Tiro pit (see Fig. 1) where outcrops of altered limestones were found to contain 425 to 482 g (15 to 17 oz) Ag mixed with copper oxides. By 1874, the Young America Copper Co. was mining shallow occurrences of 30% Cu along the north side of the present Oxide pit. The ore was shipped by wagon to Yuma, AZ, and then by boat to San Francisco for smelting. By 1881, the district supported several mining companies, two small smelters, and was being favorably compared to Bisbee in local newspapers. Most of the ore mined in the period 1865-1903 came from pods of massive sulfide or their oxidized products which were distributed in an unpredictable fashion through a large skarn zone in Paleozoic limestone east of El Tiro pit. Ore grades varied from 5 to 10% Cu.

The number of control plans for placing control devices in a ventilation network is surprisingly large, but the research result indicates that not all control plans are feasible. The feasibility of a ventilation network control plan depends on two factors. One is the influence of the network structure. The structure must contain one independent variable-flow airway in a non-controlled loop. Otherwise, the control plan is unfeasible. The other is the combination of the air resistance, quantity, pressure and other parameters. Under some conditions, the selected values of these parameters may result in an unfeasible plan. As to the influence of the network structure, when the network structure is simple, the feasibility of a control plan can be judged directly. However, for the influence of the parameters, the feasibility of a control plan must be examined through calculation. The control position has been extended into the natural-splitting subnetwork from the conventional constant-flow subnetwork. This technique is theoretically significant. The extension of control positions results in a great increment in control plans and variation in parameters. At present, the calculation methods of the ventilation network control plans are all available. They are quite useful in selecting desirable plans. However, among the plans found, some are impractical or even unfeasible. If the unfeasible ones can be eliminated at first, much time can be saved in design and calculation. This also facilitates management and decision making.

Natural aggregate is the number one non-energy mineral resource in terms of value and volume and is a necessary commodity for sustainable communities. While aggregate is a non-renewable resource, supplies are nearly inexhaustible on a global scale. Natural aggregates have characteristics that differentiate them from most other mineral commodities: a high number of potential extraction sites, a high volume to value ratio, significantly different set of potential environmental impacts, and regional importance combined with a narrow economic transportation radius. Because of these and other differences, resource management policies for aggregates should differ from ?general? mineral resource policies, even though the end goal is the same for both ? ensuring sustainable resource management. To achieve the goals of sustainable aggregate management each stakeholder ? government, industry, the public, and non-governmental organizations ? will need to accept certain responsibilities, one of the most important of which is to become informed about natural resource issues. Sustainability is about making trade offs among competing objectives, and people disagree about the appropriate balance among the goals of economic prosperity, social equity, and environmental health. One of the primary purposes of mineral indicators is to provide information to decision makers and the public so as to ensure that the public debate about policy choices is grounded in fact. We identify the unique aspects of aggregate resource management and introduce the concepts of sustainable mineral resource management. We then present mineral indicator sets for aggregate resources from Italy, the United Kingdom, and Slovenia to demonstrate that effective mineral indicators should be specific to the resource in question and the public values and objectives.

The application of a magnetic field was shown to be effective in controlling iron losses in a pilot-scale cationic silica fIotation in the processing of magnetic taconite concentrates. The design of a magnetic field distribution device and batch flotation test results using a 1.42-m3 (50 cu ft) WEMCO flotation cell are reported. Major losses of iron units in froth products were in the -25-µm (-500-mesh) fraction, and the application of a magnetic field decreased the flotation of fine magnetite, thereby improving the selectivity of separation. The "as-received" sample was sufficiently magnetized, and no further benefit was gained by the magnetizing treatment. The selectivity was somewhat adversely affected by demagnetizing the sample, though its effect was minimal due to the magnetic field. The device is simple in construction, low cost and may be readily installed in existing equipment. INTRODUCTION Cleveland-Cliffs' operations in Michigan have been utilizing fully autogenous grinding for over four decades. This is but one of the key characteristics of the iron ore processing method that was developed for the extremely fine grained, low grade deposits of the region. Liberation size of the hematite and magnetite ranges from about 30 to less than 1 micron. Typical grinding fineness target to achieve silica grade in the concentrate is 80 to 90% passing 25 microns, or a P80 of approximately 20 microns. After primary grinding, the magnetite ore is first upgraded by rougher magnetic separation. It is then ground to final product size, sent through thickener-sizers utilizing selective flocculation, upgraded again by finisher magnetic separation, and then brought to final silica grade by reverse amine flotation. Hematite ore follows essentially the same route, less the magnetic separation stages. Concentrate is filtered and pelletized, along with con- trolled additions of fluxstone, to ready it for shipping. Iron ore pellets on the water of the Great Lakes have a value of approximately 1.5 cents per pound. Inexpensive and effective means of delivering courses to mining engineers who live at remote and scattered locations remains to be a challenging issue. Computer-based instructorless but interactive multimedia delivery is a good substitute to traditional short courses and one-way broadcasts. Such a system, enhanced with a wide area network, is an inexpensive alternative to two-way broadcasts and even to a traditional university. Course material can either be delivered on compact disks (CDs) or on-line from the host servers over the phone lines using a personal computer and a modem. Although technically not feasible using ordinary telephone service lines at the present time without further modification, advances in this field indicate that this up and coming medium may dominate the competition in the future. This paper investigates the present and the future of this technology and discusses the experiences gained in creating and disseminating a prototype multimedia CD which was created at the Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Institute of the University of Missouri-Rolla to teach a portion of a course in Ground Control. The hardware and software used in creating the audio, 3-0 graphics, animation dips, video clips, and movies are listed. The structure of the program and the way how interactivity was achieved is explained in detail.

In most industries it is normal commercial policy to try to gear production to the market. In times of scarcity output is pushed to its maximum and in times of glut output is reduced. Because of the effects of supply and demand, these times correspond to times of high and low prices respectively so the policy results in maximising long run total profits. Stockpiling is often an integral part of the policy. Stocks are accumulated during depressed market conditions and sold off when demand revives. This further increases the long run total profits. However, such policies cause violent fluctuations in short term profitability and impose severe financial strains. Indeed planning and implementing the policies are a central management concern which is often critical to the success of the industry. The mining industry is no exception and, for many raw materials, trying to balance supply with demand is an international problem. Stockpiling and restricted production agreements are common elements of policy. But very little attention has been paid to the one additional control which is unique to the mining industry, namely, the cut off grade. This neglect is apparent at all levels from individual mines to national economies.

The large open pit areas of surface mining as well as the huge quantities of residues generated during the digestion of bauxite with sodium hydroxide solution to produce alumina are considered as the most important environmental problems associated with the exploitation of bauxites. Aluminum of Greece, which is the only aluminum refinery in the country, located in Agios Nicolaos, Paralia Distomou, Viotia, produces almost 680.000 tones of bauxite residue annually which is pumped through pipes from the refinery to the sea bed of Antikira gulf. In order to avoid any kind of environmental problems related to this disposal method and to reduce the total volume of bauxite residue disposed of in the environment, Aluminium of Greece investigates several alternatives for bauxite residue utilization. In this framework, it also examines the potential use of bauxite residues as a filler in abandoned mining open pits. Bauxite residues are mainly composed of fine particles of silica, aluminum, iron, calcium and titanium oxides and hydroxides. Furthermore, the material presents low hydraulic conductivity, slightly higher than the limit posed for low permeability layers by the EC landfill directive. Based on these properties the dry disposal method was selected for disposing bauxite residues in mining open pits since it has many advantages such as reduced overall disposal cost, effective use of land and minimum environmental impacts. The results obtained for this method, which is investigated at demonstration scale, are presented in this paper.

Introduction The Kaiser Resources Ltd. hydraulic coal mine is located in south eastern British Columbia, Canada, at the western end of the Crowsnest Pass, next to the Town of Sparwood. The seam presently being mined is the number 10, known locally as the Balmer seam, which is a high quality coking coal, 50 feet in thickness and of an average inclination of 35 degrees. The mine was designed in the late sixties as a small scale trial unit, and was to use a single monitor unit, working 3 shifts per day on a 5 day per week basis. Experience has proved the method to be so successful as to warrant the expansion of the ancilliary facilities to cater for the increased production. The annual raw coal production from this single monitor unit has risen from 108,988 short tons in 1970 to 942,334 short tons in 1975, with a total mine labour force of about 160 men including the surface de-watering plant, mine supervision and mine administration.

The processing capability of a semi-autogenous (SAG) mill is greatly affected by ore geology and operating variables within the mill. The SAG mill is problematic because it cannot be conveniently studied on a smaller, laboratory-scale mill. The interior of the mill, where grinding takes place, cannot be observed using instrumentation available today. Yet the motion of the rock and ball charge determines the power draft and hence capacity of the mill. Therefore, mill optimization is pursued with a charge motion simulation software. This software uses the discrete element method to describe the individual motion of numerous ball and rock particles in the mill. It is shown that by simply increasing the chord length between the lifters and increasing the face angle of the lifters the capacity of the mill can be increased. Such a configuration of lifters allows the operator to increase mill speed, hence drawing higher power while considerably minimizing direct ball strikes against shell plates and lifters. A case study of a 36 ft. diameter x 15 ft. long mill is presented. Reducing the direct ball strikes leads to lesser steel consumption both in terms of balls and lifters.

This case history really started during the tail end of WWII when two Navy men, both Colorado School of Mines graduates, got together in Washington, DC, while they were assigned to the Office of Navy Petroleum Reserves doing some of the first aerial magnetometer work ever done on a practical oil exploration basis over the offshore area of the Gulf Coast. When separated from Naval Service active duty in 1946, the two men, Walter E. Heinrichs, Jr., and Robert E. Thurmond, tried, unsuccessfully, to form a commercial air magnetometer business. Later they got together again in Jerome, AZ, with Newmont Mining's early geophysical exploration endeavors from 1947 to 1949. Subsequent to the Newmont experience, they jointly proposed a specific mining geophysical exploration and development program to Herbert Hoover, Jr., then president of United Geophysical Co. of Pasadena, CA. Mr. Hoover, in consultation with his father Herbert Hoover and others of his staff at United, particularly Edwin G. Schempf, executive vice president, and Raymond A. Peterson, vice president of research, agreed to establish the proposed program under United's auspices, to be headquartered at Tucson, AZ. The primary objective would be to practically test and develop various mining geophysical methods and techniques while exploring particularly for base metals in the general area of southeast Arizona and southwest New Mexico.

The physical relief is a variable of utmost significance in the course of the analysis, evaluation, design and management of the visual environment. In this sense, there are cases where it would be desirable to isolate the relief from the other elements making up the visual environment and to investigate its visual value separately. Such cases include the technical works that cause major and permanent alterations to the relief, as well as the works, of which the spatial arrangement depends on the morphology of the ground. Slopes, distances, hypsometric difference values, viewsheds are elements of the relief that affect the visual value of a landscape, but also the ability of a particular landscape to accept and absorb new activities. This paper describes an evaluation and prediction model of the visual value of the landforms. A questionnaire survey takes place in order to investigate the public preference, using a sample of 221 persons in the broader area of Athens. The means used to demonstrate the various forms of reliefs are 32 perspective digital relief images. Following this and in order to investigate the elements of the relief that affect its visual value, 20 quantitative indices were developed and examined so as to select the best ones. Linear prediction models of the visual value were investigated from the previous elements, through a regression process. The applications of the proposed model in physical environment planning are many, such as the prediction of visual impact by arranging works that alter the relief of a region, as it happens in mining, metallurgical and waste disposal sites.

The structure of an exploration model reflects a number of design considerations, one of which is the question or issue-to be investigated by the model. Thus, a model designed to evaluate the magnitude of risk and its economic implication to optimal decision making at each decision juncture of a multistage exploration architecture differs considerably from one designed to evaluate, say, the long run average cost of discovery, in which the architecture of exploration is suppressed and risk is simply an element of average cost. The perspective of the model examined in this paper is that exploration is investment in (purchase of) information and that the next stage of an exploration program is undertaken only when the expected value of information to be acquired in that stage exceeds its cost. The degree to which this perspective is honored influences considerably model design. Consider two design objectives:
