On November 15, 1990, President Bush signed the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The new legislation is sweeping in its demands for cuts in smog, acid deposition, toxic air pollutants and ozone-depleting chemicals. The Amendments will siqnificantly alter air quality permitting and compliance and are estimted to cost billions of dollars to implement. This article provides an overview and summary of each of the eleven titles of the Amendments. It also addresses how the Amendments will be implemented.

This paper presents a case study which applies risk assessment techniques in evaluating potential environmental problems associated with past waste disposal practices at a 65 acre non-ferrous metals and metal alloys manufacturing facility. Waste management activities at the site involved a number of surface impoundments for gangue material, neutralized acid rinse waters, acid rinse sludges, demolition debris, storm water runoff, stockpiled ores, and a permitted residual waste landfill. As a result of these activities, the She contained 9 identifiable waste management areas impacted by over 35 potentially hazardous chemicals and metals. Extensive environmental data obtained from investigations at the Site revealed heavy metal and volatile organic chemical contamination in various environmental media. These data were utilized to evaluate potential risks to human health and the environment. The human health risk assessment estimated potential health risks to workers, residents, and Site trespassers under current and expected future uses of the Site. Areas of the Site were identified which were considered to present potential health concerns under the various exposure scenarios. Results from the human health risk assessment were utilized to develop cost effective risk based soil remediation goals protective of the public health and environment.

INTRODUCTION Conventional roof support methods such as mechanical and resin bolting provide adequate support for a wide variety of coal mine roof conditions. However, roof falls remain the single largest cause of death and injury in underground mines and seriously hamper production in many operations, demonstrating that these methods of roof support are not universally effective. One of the most recent and successful advances in coal mine roof control has been the introduction of the roof truss. Although past work on roof trusses (Gambrel1 and Haynes, 1970; Sheory, et al, 1973) shows little quantification of this support technique, numerous field examples have been cited where the truss effectively supported roof which could not be controlled by either mechanical or resin bolts (Kegel, 1969). The truss combines the advantages of both inclined roof bolts and post-stressing the roof. However, the full benefits of roof trusses will only be realized when design criteria to optimize support capacity are determined. The number of trusses required for a given roof condition can then be minimized, reducing installation time and making them economically more feasible. The purpose of this research is to develop roof truss design criteria based initially on laboratory studies of gravity-loaded multi-layered photoelastic mine models. Laboratory test results will then be modified where necessary following future field testing. The ensuing relationships should provide the field engineer with a reliable means of calculating optimum truss configuration, capacity, and spacing for a set of known roof conditions.

A consortium of Canadian mining companies, engineering firms and the Ontario Government has supported Hydrochem's efforts in the last year to design and cost a 10 tpd NITROX PROCESS® demonstration plant. A 5 kg per hour mini plant was installed at the Hydrochem facilities in Brampton, Ontario. This paper describes design testwork on Dickenson Mines arsenopyrite concentrate and application of the findings to the demonstration plant flowsheet. The control of nitrates in discard solids and stack gases is discussed in detail. Nitric acid oxidation of arsenopyrite results in significant ele- mental sulphur formation, enough for it to be detrimental to sub- sequent cyanidation. Flowsheet variations aimed at dealing with this process characteristic are discussed and testwork results on one option (hot liming) are described.

Data from about 3200 drill holes in the offshore area at Nome, Alaska was digitized and processed. Most drill hole files have associated lithology, gold value, and blow count descriptions for each drill hole. The gold intensity was used to present the potential gold resource in the study area on the world wide web. A web page was created that gives background information on the project, descriptions about the Nome area, maps of the claim blocks that include all the normalized slices of gold deposits, and links to other relevant sites on the web. An important tool for use in the geochemical assessment of abandoned mine-waste piles is a leach procedure that can easily be done in the field and used for on-site screening of historic mine-waste material. We have developed a simple field leach test that is an effective indicator of waste pile geochemistry and can be used in order to establish the relative geochemical fingerprint for a given pile. This simple procedure also provides indication of the potential chemical composition of run-off from the weathered surface of these piles. As part of developing the technique, a comparative study was carried out on eight mine-waste composite samples from different deposit types. Splits of all eight composites were leached using the field leach test procedure and a modified version of EPA Method 1312 (SPLP). We found that the field leach test consistently provides relative indication of leachate geochemical trends comparable to leachate data derived from the more regulated, time consuming and laborious EPA Method 13 12 (SPLP).

"Acid mine drainage (AMD) has become a serious environmental problem in the mining industry in the last decade. Many efforts have been made in an attempt to find a better method to manage this problem in a proper manner, both through prevention and mitigation. One of the methods to prevent AMD generation is a dry dump cover system that has been proposed to minimize oxidation of sulphide waste rock in dumping sites. The performance of this system depends on the physical and geochemical stability of a barrier layer to minimize water and oxygen influx. In the mining industry, this barrier layer is formed by using Inert/Non Acid Forming (NAF) waste rocks to cover Potentially Acid Forming (PAF) underneath. However, the availability of NAF waste rocks, due to the geological condition, mining sequence and capability of equipment, is limited in some mines. This paper will discuss the acid generation mechanism, application of a cover system and its problem being faced in an Indonesian coal mine, and describe a preliminary laboratory result of a multi layer cover system in an attempt to overcome this problem."

Rheological models are widely accepted as a means of describing the mechanical behavior of geologic materials. It has been found, however, that rheological models developed for a specific stress level on the basis of linear visco-elasticity generally are not satisfactory at other stress levels. It has been suggested that the parameters of such models should be functions of stress level (Hardy, 1965; Kim, 1971). In this paper, continuous functions of stress have been utilized to obtain the required variation of Burgers model parameters with stress level. The model developed using these functions provides a constitutive relation which reflects the real time-dependent behavior of rock materials. The new model is capable of predicting the creep behavior over a wide range of stress levels and also predicts mechanical behavior under different loading condition (e.g. constant stress rate). It is also interesting to note that the mechanical behavior of individual elements in the model appear to reflect the different stages of brittle fracture in rocks (Bieniawski, 1967), namely; crack closure, elastic deformation, stable fracture propagation and unstable fracture propagation.

Constantly increasing demand for energy materials and metal ores brought about tremendous progress in mining techniques which are characterised by a high degree of mechanization and concentration of works. One of the recent trends in underground mining mechanization is connected with an application of heavy machines with diesel engines [l],[2]. The introduction of diesel engines in mining all over world caused not only improvement in economic conditions but also the necessity to prevent contamination of air in the mine by toxic agents in diesel exhaust emissions. A generally used way of eliminating exhaust gases is proper ventilation of the cross cut by means of providing permanent exchange of air that would guarantee in every point of the cross cut and in every moment the decay in concentration of exhaust gases beyond threshold limit [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. The present paper is an attempt to define a mathematical model describing the changes of concentration in cross cut face to which fresh air is distributed by ventilators and tubes in a forcing way. Obtained model should offer its practical adaptability to engineering calculation of the amount of fresh air needed for diluting and eliminating exhaust gases beyond threshold limit. Justness of these models has been confirmed by investigation of the growth of nitrogen dioxide concentration in air environment in some cross cut faces of Kiirunavaara iron ore mine in Kiruna (Sweden).

LITHOPROBE is a collaborative, multidisciplinary research project that is providing new insights into the tectonic evolution of the North American continent through its work within 10 study areas across Canada. For the mining industry, such results provide a well-constrained regional framework and better understanding of the tectonic processes that lead to the development of ore deposits. In mining camps, seismic-reflection methods have proven effective in imaging shallow to moderately dipping lithologic contacts as well as structural features and, in some cases, have been used for the direct detection of orebodies. Here, short case histories are provided for the Abitibi greenstone belt (VMS deposits) in Quebec and the Thompson nickel belt in Manitoba.

Two rare evaporite minerals, nahcolite (NaHC03) and trona (Na2C03?NaHC03?2H20), are both widely used in the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) The largest natural carbonate deposits (trona) are in Wyoming, USA, the second largest deposits are in Turkey, in a lacustrine basin (Beypazari) where nahcolite and trona are located within the Miocene Hirka Formation. The Hirka Formation is mainly composed of bituminous shale, claystone, marlstone, tuffltuffite, and dolomitic limestones. Although numerous trona beds are interbedded within the above mentioned sedimentary units, there are only two beds of trona that are of economic interest. The lower part of the lower trona bed is rich in double carbonates such as pirrsonite (NA2C03? CaC03?2H20) and gaylussite (Na2C03?CaC03?5H20), indicating a change in Ca/Na ratio in the solutions which are responsible for the formation of soda occurrences. In contrast, the upper part of the upper trona bed is rich in nahcolite. This minerological pattern has been found in every drill- hole in the basin. While both trona beds average up to 10 m (33 ft) thick, the average thickness of nahcolite is approximately 0.5 m (1.6 ft). Also, thin section studies show that many fibrous and lath-like trona crystals contain small radial nahcolite crystals; all of them are euhedral and equi-dimensional. Geochemical studies of major, minor, and trace element contents also support this coexistence. Macroscopic and microscopic observations reveal that the nahcolites principally were formed as a result of an incongruent dissolution process of trona. In conclusion, the presence of nahcolite in the Beypazari basin is due to the dissolution process of trona, particularly during the last stage of evaporation, as a result of fresh water entering the basin. During that time, an increase in the HC03/ C03 ratio resulted in nahcolite-trona phase transitions.

This paper is a progress report on the commercialization of using bioleaching for base-metal concentrates. The paper focuses on bioleach processes for recovering copper from chalcopyrite and nickel/cobalt from pentlandite/pyrrhotite. Data is discussed from pilot-plant trials in which an overall recovery >95% was obtained for the bioleaching of copper from chalcopyrite. The pilot plant was operated in closed circuit with solvent extraction and electrowinning circuits for final metal recovery. For the bioleaching of nickel and cobalt from pentlandite/pyrrhotite, an overall recovery of 97% was achieved. Precipitation routines were used to produce a final nickel/cobalt product. The pilot plants were capable of treating a few kilograms of concentrate per day. Prominent features in the design of a 1-t/day (1.1-stpd) copper-bioleach demonstration plant for the treatment of chalcopyrite concentrate are discussed. The plant, which is now under design, will be constructed and operated based on the results obtained from the laboratory pilot-plant campaigns. Issues of scale-up for the demonstration plant, together with integration into upstream and downstream processing, are also addressed. Independently derived capital and operating costs are presented for a possible commercial plant. These cost studies indicate the principle economic issues in considering the application of bioleaching to the extraction of base metals. The benefits of bioleaching complex concentrates that are not amenable to physical beneficiation and economic treatment by conventional smelting are highlighted. Issues, such as the environmental aspects, that illustrate the benefits of bioleach technology are given.

Dry cover systems as a closure option for management and decommissioning of waste rock and tailings is a common prevention and control technique used at numerous sites around the world. Numerous site-specific factors control the long-term performance of dry cover systems. Site-specific climate conditions are one of the key factors to consider when determining the objectives of a dry cover system because these conditions will significantly influence long-term performance. There are advantages and disadvantages of characterizing the site on an annual basis as generally a “dry” site (annual potential evaporation greatly exceeds annual precipitation), or generally a “wet” site (annual precipitation meets or exceeds annual potential evaporation). The field performance monitoring data and discussion presented herein illustrates the caution that is required when using these “annual” criteria for characterizing site climate conditions. Numerous sites exist where precipitation exceeds potential evaporation on an annual basis; however, the site typically experiences hot, dry summer months where evaporation greatly exceeds rainfall. These dry summer conditions have a strong influence on long-term performance. In contrast, sites where potential evaporation exceeds precipitation on annual basis, typically experience periods of the year when a moisture surplus occurs, which also impacts on long-term performance. This paper uses soil-atmosphere cover design modelling and field performance monitoring from sites in Canada, Australia, and the United States to demonstrate the importance of considering site-specific climate conditions when predicting long-term cover system performance.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), located in Tucson, AZ, will hold its 16th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet Saturday, Dec. 5,1998. The Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by selected individuals and industry partners. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two mining history honorees are chosen by the , Hall of Fame Committee and the Board of Governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual, technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. In 1995, an award was created to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker will be Charles G. Preble, president and chief executive officer of Southern Peru Copper Corp. He is being recognized for outstanding performance as an executive of an American company operating under difficult circumstances in a foreign country. The Hall of Fame will induct H. Myles Jacob, former chairman and CEO of Inspiration Copper Co., for innovation and farsightedness in matters pivotal to the cop- per industry of his time. In addition, John Cromwell Lincoln, former president and chairman of Bagdad Mining Co., will be inducted for his outstanding contributions to the American mining industry. These contributions include metallurgical research and development of the Bagdad Mine as well as pioneering innovation in the electrical industry. Medals of Merit will be awarded to David N. Skillings, editor and publisher of Skillings Mining Re- view, for his dedication and support of mining interests. J. Ruben Velasco Rodriguez will also receive a Medal of Merit. He is economic geologist, professor and former secretary of the board of directors and secretary general of Compania Minera de Cananea. His medal is for fostering excellent relations between Mexico and the , United States in mining geology and management and for advancing the professional development of others in the field of earth science. With the current trends towards the concentration of extraction to fewer but higher production units in deeper seams, often of higher coal rank, the role of methane drainage ranges has become critical. As mines exploit seams at greater depth and more remote locations there has been a need to extend the lengths of methane drainage ranges and to increase the capacity of the surface pumps. This trend has highlighted the need to effectively simulate the operation of a methane drainage range in order to produce the optimum design and operation of a safe and economic system. This paper describes the development of such an analytical tool. The application of this computer model is illustrated by the analysis of the operation of the drainage system of an extensive mine. The paper concludes by considering the development of a [Knowlege Based or Decision Support System] which will assist the ventilation engineer in assessing the current performance of an existing drainage range and will suggest possible remedial modifications or design strategies which may improve the system performance. INTRODUCTION In order to maintain the general body methane levels to below predetermined statutory threshold limit values (TLV's) on major longwall production units there are, for a given production rate, two major complementary control devices which may be employed by the ventilation engineer. These are the combined design and application of a competent mine ventilation and methane drainage system. The methane drainage system should be designed so as to maximise the capture of the methane (firedamp) from the seam being mined and the strata gas liberated in the vicinity of the extraction zone from gas bearing seams or other reservoirs of gas situated at above or below the mining horizon. The design fresh air quantity entering the face should ensure that under normal operating conditions the methane entering in the vicinity of the face is rapidly dispersed and dilute to well below statutory TLV's. The drainage system must therefore be designed to maximise the capture of the methane gas liberated to minimise the amount of gas which enters the ventilation airstream. GAS DRAINAGE The inherent dangers of methane emissions in mine workings have been a problem of concern to mining engineers for many years. To alleviate the risk, methane drainage has been employed for some years to capture the gas before it becomes a hazard to the operation of the mine. The method of drainage employed will be dependent on a number of factors which include the longwall mining method and production cycle employed, the characteristics of the coal seam being extracted and those of the adjacent gas bearing strata. The key to unlocking value is to find opportunity where others have missed it. How does a company find value in a thoroughly explored asset? This article explores the approach taken by one company and the results it achieved from working this problem. The town of Shafter is located on a small bend in the road in west Texas' Big Bend Country. Its past emulates the glory days of so many other mining camps. A discovery was made, fortunes were built and World War II shut down the operation. The Shafter deposit continues to be one of the larg¬est undeveloped primary silver deposits in North America. Gold Fields Mining Co. recognized the area's potential in 1977 and embarked on studies to reopen and develop the district. Gold Fields spent $16 million on the Shafter project. It drilled more than 86,240 m (282,940 ft) in 475 holes, sunk two shafts and developed 1,550 m (5,100 ft) of underground workings. Today, the mothballed 447-kW (600-hp), single-drum Nordberg hoist and permanent production-type, single-compartment headframe continue to crown the shaft. Other buildings onsite house compressors, mine pumps, spare parts, drill core and other supplies. All these items look as though they arrived yesterday. By 1982, Gold Fields had completed an extensive feasibility study with ambitions to. construct a 1.36-kt/d (1,500-stpd) agitated cyanidation mill and base metal gravity circuit. Reserves at Shafter stand at 4.23 Mt (4.67 million st) grading 193.5 g/t (5.65 oz/st) silver. Gold Fields planned to produce 71.5 t/a (2.3 million oz/year) of silver at a head grade of 196.2 g/t (5.73 oz/st) silver with a 77% recovery rate. Cash costs were projected to be $5.54/oz with an anticipated initial and total capital cost of $46.2 million and $51.3 million (1984 dollars), respectively. The study assumed a silver price of $8.60/oz that has not been seen since the Hunt brothers quit buying silver. When silver prices declined, Gold Fields put the property up for sale.

In underground operations the evaluation of blasting fume dilution times and the application of recirculation techniques require accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosive used. This paper describes a methodology for obtaining concentrations of detonation products from commercial explosives tested under typical rock confinement and looks into the development of techniques for reducing toxic gases produced by explosives. This paper also analyses the application of techniques for the removal of toxic gas which would enable reduced re-entry times, a reduction in the quantity of fresh air and the use of air recirculation techniques, thereby providing substantial economic benefits to the industry. INTRODUCTION Toxic fumes from blasting operations are among the most common and serious hazards encountered underground. The implication of high concentrations of toxic gases emitted from blasting on the mine ventilation system are very significant and, in many cases, catastrophic results have occurred. Because blasting is a routine practice underground, the mining engineer is always confronted with the problem of controlling the fumes within acceptable levels. Typical control procedures employed underground include preventing or reducing the amount of fumes liberated from blasting through the proper selection of explosives and proper blasting techniques; removing the fumes through local exhaust systems or auxiliary ventilation (dilution ventilation); blasting off-shift, or at restricted times; localizing or isolating the effects of blasting where workings are isolated or sectionalized in the ventilation system; and absorbing some of the components of the fumes using air-water sprays. Dilution is one of the most effective control measures against blasting fumes and is universally applied. However, for precise determination of the dilution times for the fumes to reach safe concentrations, accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosives used is required. Research work has been carried out in determining the types and volumes of gases produced from blasting. In the case of ideal detonations, the nature and quantity of the fumes produced can be predicted by thermo-hydrodynamic calculations. However, commercial explosives exhibit non-ideal behaviour which is enhanced by the relatively small diameters of application in underground mines. The confinement offered by the surrounding rock further complicates the situation. It is well recognized that confinement affects performance and consequently fume generation. A detailed data base of fumes generated by commercial explosives at various conditions is introduced and the effect of blasting parameters such as, confinement, shock desensitization and incomplete detonations on toxic fume production is described for a variety of commercial explosives in use today. Thermodynamic predictions on fume production by the explosive compositions tested are also presented and compared with experimental results and their significance in assessing the quantity of fumes produced is discussed. A mathematical model capable of determining dilution ventilation requirements and dilution times to reduce the fume concentrations in the blasting zone to acceptable levels has been developed and it is being incorporated into a network system so that the effects of blasting can be simulated in typical mine ventilation systems. Solutions to the problem of controlling blast fumes within acceptable levels are described. These solutions include the use of control procedures which prevent and reduce the amount of fumes liberated from blasting. The use of low fume explosives, proper blasting techniques, dilution ventilation and filtration can be combined to effectively control fume production and save on costs. The application of these techniques to enable recirculation of underground air with reduced quantities of fresh air requirements is evaluated in a case study.

A process for the combined chemico-biological removal of iron present as oxide minerals in different mineral raw materials (quartz sands, kaolins, clays, etc.) was developed. In the process, mineral raw materials are leached at about 90 °C with lixiviant containing microbially produced oxalic and hydrochloric acids. The leaching is carried out in mechanically stirred acid-resistant reactors for periods of from 1 to 6 hours, depending on the iron content and the forms of iron in the raw materials being leached. The iron contents of some sands treated by this method were lowered from levels that were in the range of 0.035% to 0.088% Fe2O3 to less than 0.012% Fe2O3, making them suitable for the preparation of high-quality glass. The iron contents of different kaolins were lowered from levels that were in the range of 0.65% to 1.49% Fe2O3 to levels in the range of 0.44% to 0.75% Fe2O3. As a result, the whiteness was increased from values of 55% to 87% to values of 86% to 92%. The iron content of clay was lowered from 6.25% Fe2O3 to 1.85% Fe2O3, and this increased the “fireproofness" of the clay from 1,670°C to 1,750°C. A similar process was used for the leaching of aluminum from aluminosilicates, mainly clays and kaolins. However, in this case, the microbial fermentation fluid containing citric acid was acidified by means of sulfuric or hydrochloric acid or by means of different mixtures of mineral acids. For enhancing aluminum solubilization, the aluminosilicates were heated before leaching at 600° to 650°C for 1 to 2 hours. Over 90% of the aluminum present in different clays and kaolins were leached within 3 to 6 hours. "Silicate " bacteria related to the species Bacillus circulans were used to leach silicon from low-grade bauxite ores containing aluminosilicates as impurities. The bacterial action was connected with the degradation of the mineral structures (by means of microbial metabolites such as organic acids and exopolysaccharides), as well as with the selective separation of the rich-in-aluminum fine fractions, which were retained by the mucilaginous capsules of the bacteria. The solid residues after treatment were characterized by higher values of alumina and silicon module (A1203: SiO2 ratio), and they were suitable for processing by means of the Bayer process for recovering aluminum. The bending strength and other ceramic properties of kaolins were improved by contact with well-developed cultures of "silicate" bacteria. The improvement was caused mainly by bacterial metabolites (exopolysaccharides) that acted as resins during drying.

Refractories, called the Hidden Industry by The Refractories Institute, provide the temperature and chemically resistant linings for the multitude of vessels that are used today in high temperature processes ranging from giant iron-making blast furnaces to industrial incinerators to petrochemical cracking units to the smallest furnaces used by the jewelry trade. While these refractory linings are absolutely essential to the proper functioning of these processes, the linings are almost always on the inside of the vessels and thus hidden from the eyes of the public. Refractories are defined in Standard C71 of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), titled "Standard Definitions of Terms Relating to Refractories," as "nonmetallic materials having those chemical and physical properties that make them applicable for structures, or as components of systems, that are exposed to environments above 1 000°F (538°C)." This criterion of ability to withstand exposure to environments above 538OC is the critical distinction separating refractories from other ceramics, fibers, and coatings applicable only at lower temperatures. In addition to resisting temperature, the refractories must with- stand abrasion, chemical and slag attack, resist thermal shock, and carry sustained structural stresses at high operating temperatures for as long as years. The most common methods of classifying refractories are by forming method and composition. First are the traditional formed and fired bricks, batts, and the associated multitude of special shapes. These refractories are usually formed at room temperature, dried, and then fired to high temperatures to develop the final properties desired. Other formed refractories are chemically bonded or resin or tar bonded. To complete the formed refractory matrix, some fired refractory bricks and shapes are subsequently impregnated with resins or tars. Physical dimensions of these formed refractories are classified into two general categories: standard sizes and special shapes. The standard sizes are those in common usage in the United States described in ASTM Standard C909 "Dimensions of a Modular Series of Refractory Brick and Shapes" based on the 38 mm basic module as described in ASTM Standard C861 "Determining Metric Dimensions of Standard Series Refractory Brick and Shapes." The most common size is the "9-inch straight" 228 x 114 x 64 mm (9 x 4 ½ x 2 ½ in.) of the "2 ½ -inch" series or 228 x 114 x 76 mm (9 x 4 ½ x 3 in.) of the "3-inch" series. Bricks of nonstandard sizes are referred to as special shapes. Their use is required in specific furnaces for particular requirements or applications. In addition there is the large and growing group of refractories sold as unshaped mixtures that may be formed into their final shapes at the application site. These unshaped mixtures are sometimes referred to as specialties. The mixtures are prepared to be hydraulically cast, plastic or wet rammed, dry rammed, or dry vibrated into their final shapes. Some are designed to be projected through nozzles (or gunned) onto their forms. The refractory mortars used to lay up the shaped refractories fall into this group referred to as specialties. Prepared refractory grains also are sold. These are usually calcined or fused materials that are subsequently crushed and sized to a variety of specific carefully controlled grain sizes or size distributions. These grains include calcined fire clay, dead burned magnesite, periclase (fused magnesia), dead burned dolomite, kyanite, tabular and fused aluminas, fused zirconia, fused mullite, and calcined alumina-magnesia spinel. The primary composition groups of refractories are the 1) alumino-silicate refractories made largely from fire clay and high- alumina materials, 2) silica refractories made from quartzites and ganisters, and 3) basic refractories from magnesia (or magnesite) and chromia (also referred to as chrome ore), alone and in combination, and dolomite. Special refractories include carbon, zirconia, zircon, high purity alumina, mullite, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and some borides. In addition there are groups of special insulating refractories.

An effective elution technique has been developed for recovering uranium from ion exchange resins loaded in the carbonate leaching process. The procedure employs direct elution with acid. In comparison with conventional base elution, the procedure yields eluate of higher uranium concentration, results in a more complete elution, keeps the performance of the ion exchange resin at the fresh stage, reduces acid consumption, eliminates carbonate consumption and reduces waste for disposal. The technique has been successfully demonstrated in the field and patented. It lends itself to commercialization.
