INTRODUCTION Designers of major public works projects in the past have displayed varying degrees of environmental consciousness, and tunnel designers in particular have always had to deal with certain environmental considerations - ventilation, lighting, aesthetics - as matters of primary design. Today, however, with a widening sector of the public becoming environmentally aware, tunnels are treated as elements of whole transportation systems, and are subject to increasing environmental scrutiny. The Route H-3 tunnels in Hawaii are examples of the time, care, and detail involved in a major rock tunnel project. Project Description The Route. Interstate Route H-3 is a proposed 10-mile highway crossing the Koolau Mountain Range on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, providing a direct connection between the Pearl Harbor area and the windward part of the island in the vicinity of Kaneohe. It is designed as a dual highway with provision to accommodate mass transit. As shown on Figure 1, the project includes two sets of twin bore tunnels (through the Main Koolau Range and through Red Hill), three highway sections of which two are through largely undeveloped mountain valleys (South Halawa and Moanalua), a viaduct, and three interchanges. From the Halawa Interchange to the Kaneohe Interchange, the proposed highway consists of two 3-lane roadways separated by a median where the highway is at grade. The alphaDOSIMETER is a complete, integrated system designed to monitor the immediate worksite of underground miners where the disintegration for radon daughters is a risk to the health of mining personnel. The dosimeter weighing little more than one pound is worn by each miner throughout the entire shift and is powered by the miner's cap lamp battery. After this integration period, the unit is connected to a reading network whereupon the day's data is dumped, calculated and stored. Beginning in July 1980, prototype units were subjected to vigorous underground testing in uranium mines in Canada and the United States and in tin mines in Cornwall, U.K. The testing results are summarized and proposals advanced for a typical mine monitoring system utilizing the alphaDOSIMETER.

Traditionally, coarse wolframite ore processing has been done almost exclusively by gravity concentration methods. However, there has been a depletion of rich and coarse ore reserves and a proportional increase in the mining of low-grade, fine-grained complex ore feeds. This change has resulted in the need for better slime-processing technology. Research and development activities in this area have gained momentum, and recent innovations appear promising. This paper covers the recent innovations that have been made in dealing with tungsten ore slime processing. The new techniques include the application of a centrifugal cone separator, high-intensity wet magnetic separator, the use of phosphonic and arsonic acids as collectors in ultrafine wolframite flotation, and combined processes.

Through a joint development program between Bougainville Copper Ltd. and Nordberg, the MP1000 cone crusher was developed and tested during the period between 1982 and 1987. Following the successful prototype work, Bougainville Copper purchased an additional three units. A second prototype was installed at Codelco's El Teniente three-stage crushing installation in 1987. This unit has also completed its test period successfully. Three additional units have been sold, making a total of eight, to date. Two will be installed as secondary crushers in two separate large aggregate plants. The first unit installed in the United States was placed in operation at Vulcan Materials Company's plant in Manassas, Virginia in early May 1990. Another unit is being installed in Asarco's Ray Mines expansion. The Asarco installation will be a SAG MILL pebble crusher producing approximately 600 STPH of nominal 1/2" product. Application Objective The objective was to design a crusher that would fit on an existing 7' foundation with minimum modification and yet be capable of twice the production of a 7' cone crusher. In meeting this objective, the power rating was increased to 1000 HP, the maximum design crushing force was increased and the crusher was designed to operate at higher speeds than an equivalent size Symons cone crusher. The MP1000 was also designed to operate with a head throw that can be greater than the equivalent Symons design. INTRODUCTION A trend which is obvious in the United Kingdom and is thought to be evident in other parts of the Western world is the disproportionate rise in the cost of tunnel mining labour compared with other tunnel cost increases. This disproportionate increase in labour costs has been accompanied by, and may be the result of, a shortage of skilled working labour. To combat this problem there has been a steady increase in the use of machines for excavation and for the erection of tunnel linings to keep the amount of skilled labour working below ground to a minimum. The typical tunnelling cycle, where the ground needs continuous support can be excavation, temporary support, temporary lining, grouting and permanent lining. It is obviously an advantage to combine as many of these operations as possible and carry out as much as possible by machine. Machines have been developed which will, either alone or used in combination with a shield, excavate and, when necessary, temporarily support the excavation. If a segmental lining is used, it can be so designed that it will form the permanent lining and reduce the cycle time and skilled labour requirement to a minimum. In cases in which the ground can be cut accurately to a smooth profile and will stand without support for a sufficient time, the lining can be expanded against the ground and the necessity of grouting eliminated. In cases in which ground will not stand without support, the usual method is to use a bolted lining and to grout behind it preferably as the shield is shoved forward. "1. INTRODUCTIONDo contractual practices affect project outcome? Can better contractual practices improve the likelihood of project success? The consensus amongst experts is that better contractual practices really do improve project outcomes. With this in mind the members of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) Working Group 3 on Contractual Practices (WG3) pooled their collective knowledge to publish in 2011 the document entitled The ITA Contractual Framework Checklist for Subsurface Construction Contracts (ITA Working Group 3, 2011). Written for projects involving significant subsurface works, e.g. tunnels and caverns, the ITA Framework Checklist explains the major contractual issues that must be considered to ensure a successful project. Its goal is not to specify how each issue should be resolved, but rather to highlight the issues and give recommendations on how they should be addressed. The Checklist is compatible with, and provides guidance for reviewing, standard contracts such as FIDIC and NEC. One of the authors is a co-author of the Checklist and has contributed to previous papers describing the Checklist and its applicability to hydropower projects (Hodgkinson & Wilson 2014, Hodgkinson & Wilson 2015). The Checklist identifies a series of issues that should be contractually defined, which can be summarized as follows: •,Methods for dealing with geotechnical uncertainties should be defined in the contract •,There should be an appropriate level of geotechnical/geological investigation •,Sufficient mobilization periods should be allowed •,Sufficient time should be allowed for testing and commissioning •,Procedures for timely dispute resolution should clearly defined •,Quality and performance requirements should be clearly defined and measurable •,Provision should exist for cost consequences of unforeseen circumstances •,Dispute resolution processes should be clearly defined •,Payment processes should be fair and clearly defined •,Risk should be clearly allocated and parties should be able to bear the risks they carry •,There should be a mechanism for adjusting payments according to conditions •,The risk management approach should be clearly defined •,Admeasurement or unit price approaches are recommended •,The responsibilities of each party must be clearly defined •,The consequences of non-performance should be clearly defined •,The construction programme (schedule) should be realistic."

The following paper is an evaluation of the instrumentation programs on recent Corps of Engineers tunneling projects. The authors have first-hand knowledge of the NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Complex (NCMC) Expansion Project. Information on the other projects comes from conversations with those directly involved in the instrumentation programs and from referenced reports. The specific objectives of this paper are: (1) to state the purposes of the instrumentation programs, (2) to discuss the benefits gained from the instrumentation, and (3) to present conclusions from this study that will provide guidance to those planning instrumentation on future projects. Presentation of detailed descriptions of the projects and instrumentation data is limited to that necessary to the accomplishment of the above objectives. NCMC EXPANSION PROJECT The NCMC is located at a depth of approximately 800 feet in Cheyenne Mountain near Colorado Springs, Colorado. For the current expansion project new chambers were mined to accommodate a new diesel power plant and associated cooling and air handling equipment. During 1971 some 55,000 yd3 of granite were mined through existing access tunnels for this expansion. A model of the new excavation is shown in Figure 1. The light shaded areas are new openings, and the dark areas are portions of the existing operating complex. The large chamber to the right is the power plant chamber and has a span of 67 ft, a height of 50 ft, and a length of 172 ft. The other large chamber on the lower level is the cooling tower chamber and has a span of 38 ft, a height of 45 ft and a length of 185 ft. "INTRODUCTION Peoples’ and operators’ safety in construction are tightly linked to the engineering choices, as much as the necessity of reducing time and costs of realization. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to address them properly from the earliest stage of the design, identifying the risks connected to the work and the variability of such during the different phases of the project. Risk is often measured as the expected value of an undesirable outcome. Regarding to occupational safety and health, the risk is the likelihood that a person may be harmed of suffers adverse health effects if exposed to a hazard. This combines the probabilities of various possible events and the assessment of the corresponding harm into a single value. However, the actual occurrences are often more complex than a single binary possibility case. In a real case scenario, with several possible accidents, the total risk is the sum of the risks for each different accident, provided that the outcomes are comparable. The semi-automatic tunnel support system along with its erector machine proved to be a solution with improved structural performance, able to reduce the time and yet to deliver an enhanced, quality-aware and safer working environment for the operators. The implementation of the system provides the engineers, the contractors and the owners with an effective alternative option shortlisted in 2015 for the ITA Award for the Safety Innovation of the Year. In a market industry driven by safety and time constrains the efficiency shall be the ultimate goal, in order to provide solutions able to negotiate with the most challenging ground conditions. In this paper, the authors describe the recent developments on regard of this whole new tunnel support system, including design approach and presenting related case histories OFFSETTING THE RISKS Considering the above factors, from the manufacturers’ point of view, an effective way to limit the construction risks is to focus on the material and technological characteristics, their application and the risks related to them including any residual risks. Finally addressing the construction needs also involves time and cost-effective solutions. The path to follow is an integrated approach where the efficient management of the risk is supported by a flexible, user-friendly, and time effective product that is able to provide a safe, reliable and viable solution to address the construction requirements. Therefore, in a market sector driven by safety and time constraints, the efficiency is a key goal, in order to avoid redundancy and yet to deliver a safe working environment able to meet the construction schedule. The safety of all the parties involved is given by stable working conditions, either for the workers, or the operators and eventually the public. Therefore, the solutions provided should ‘strengthen’ the overall condition and such “to limit or to reduce the deformations within acceptable designed limits and to prevent [the tunnel] to collapse” [1: Clause 207.1.4]."

Both Canada and the United States are endowed with significant reserves of mineral resources. Mining industries in these two countries have a strong safety and health culture; skilled, dedicated and well-paid workforce; applications of state-of-the art technologies and high productivity, strict environmental requirements and social responsibility. Both countries are global leaders in safe, economic, productive, environmentally responsible and sustainable mining practices. Mining schools/ departments in Canada and the United States provide a strong and comprehensive education and training, hands-on learning experience, with support for internships and co-op opportunities to prepare graduates for careers not only nationally but also in the global mining industry. While there are many similarities in their industries and mining schools, there are also some differences. This article examines the contribution of mining to the economy, the political climate, the regulatory framework, the investment climate, environmental regulations, the language, the perception of mining, news and press coverage, and the academic landscape in both countries. Over 25 years ago, SKEGA pioneered the use of rubber linings in grinding mills and rubber is today widely accepted and almost standard material chosen for Regrind -and Secondary Mills. There are, however, only a few Primary Mills in operation with "solid" rubber linings because available materials and designs are often not cost efficient in comparison with steel alloys on a cost per ton basis and/or downtime for liner replacement would be too high.

The Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., generates a jarosite waste at its Risdon smelter. Since 1974 this waste has been disposed of at sea off south-east Tasmania. As part of a monitoring programme prescribed by the Australian Government, bottom sediments from the disposal zone are monitored regularly. QEM*SEM image analysis complements conventional chemical analysis, having the ability to partition the occurrence of an element between sediment particles of metallurgical and natural origin. The adaptation of QEM*SEM techniques to the evaluation of bottom sediments provides insight into the fate of the particles of jarosite waste.

In December 1988 Phelps dodge corporation brought an underground gold mine into production in the republic of Botswana. The mineralization is associated with steeply dipping shear zones in Archean greenstones of the Tati Schist Belt. The gold is intimately associated with sulfides and is refractory in nature. The deposit is being exploited by underhand open stoping methods. Vertical and inclined shafts are used to hoist the ore to surface where it is treated by conventional crushing, milling and flotation, followed by fluid bed roasting with CIP elution and carbon regeneration. Adjacent deposits are being explored with a view to increasing production. Legal and taxation aspects of operating in Botswana are discussed.

Mining of a bedded barite deposit exposed highly pyritic siliceous sediments which have weathered and degraded subsurface and surface waters. The ph, sulfate, and total dissolved solids are the most seriously affected parameters. Several solutions were tried and eventually horizontal holes were drilled into the mine wall to draw down the water table and decrease the movement of groundwater through oxidizing zones opened up by the mining operation. Areas of surface disturbance were capped with layers of soil, bentonite, and gravel to decrease the infiltration of water into the disturbed areas. These actions have begun to decrease sulfate and total dissolved solids concentrations and increase ph values.

In virtually all jurisdictions, comprehensive environmental protection regulations or standards are in place that apply to all industries, including mining. The only other legitimate mine-permitting concern is post-mining land use (PMLU). PMLU includes all uses of land after mining as well as the ecosystems appropriate for those uses. Although flawed, the New Mexico Mining Act (NMMA) of 1993 is a PMLU-based permitting statute. It requires measures during closure that will establish a PMLU or self-sustaining ecosystem for each mine unit. PMLU-based permitting avoids prescriptive, one-size-fits-all measures and keeps permitting focused on the legitimate goal of responsible land management..

Activated bleaching clays, so called because of their ability to remove color bodies from bleach fats and oils, are produced from clays of bentonitic origin. Activation is achieved by subjecting these clays to physical or chemical alteration to increase selective sorption capacities (1) . The future of activated bleaching clays depends upon the ability of producers to recognize the new areas of applications which are arising, and their skill in developing sophisticated active clays to meet new and stringent requirements. The major portion of activated bentonites are produced for decolorization of oils. New techniques of activation will improve these clays for broader spectrum use. General properties expected to result from present activation methods are: 1. Modification of hydrophobic-hydrophilic properties and increased available surface area in non-aqueous systems, thereby improving sorption capacity and ability to remove color bodies from oils. The following additional properties will be expected from future activated clays: 2. High purity of the active clay with interfering impurities totally removed. 3. Increased selective sorption capacity in aqueous systems. 4. Selective chemical reactivity, such as oxidation or hydrolysis. This property is required for removing

Mining is one of world's oldest industries. Its rich history continues into modern times. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) located in southeastern New Mexico is writing the next chapter in mining history. In fact, WIPP technology is the key to closure of the nuclear cycle with the disposal of nuclear waste in a deep geological repository. It might seem odd that the age-old institution of mining would be linked to the problem of nuclear waste disposal. In fact, the nuclear industry would not exist without mining. Uranium ore is mined from either underground or surface mines as the initial step in harnessing the magnificent resource of nuclear energy.
