Treatment of dilute acid mine drainage and similarly polluted water is becoming increasingly complicated. The pressure of economics is now exacerbated by legislation which classifies as hazardous waste the precipitates from conventional lime treatment plants. Since acid mine drainage invariably contains sulfate ions, one solution is to use anaerobic Desulfovibrio type bacteria to reduce the sulfate into sulphide ions which could then be used to precipitate out the heavy metals. Results are presented for both batch flask cultures and continuous column tests. Compost was used as the bacterial substrate in the column test which simulated heaps. Conditions changed from aerobic to the required anaerobic deep in the columns. Polluted feeds (up to 700 mg/l zinc) gave effluent containing well below I mg/l zinc over extended periods. Direct transfer of sulphide ions through a stream from an isolated container of bacteria is a good alternative.

INTRODUCTION The need for Government-sponsored research and development to increase excavation rates and lower costs for tunneling and mining operations in a variety of rock types has been emphasized in a wide range of publications from advisory panels, symposiums on rapid excavation, and individuals. In response to the predicted demands for mining and construction-oriented underground excavations for the next two decades (1970-1989), a comprehensive 10-year, $200-million research program in rapid excavation was proposed by the National Academy of Sciences in 1968 (1). Although the large program recommended by the Academy has not been funded, substantial Government-sponsored research in rapid excavation has been conducted during the past several years. This paper reviews some of the significant research accomplishments obtained under a three-year, $6.6-million research program in rock mechanics and rapid excavation sponsored by the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and managed by the Bureau of Mines. In addition to the rock mechanics research, five major phases of excavation; systems analysis, geologic prediction, rock disintegration, ground support, and materials handling were represented by the projects funded under the ARPA program. There is a critical need for effective instructional materials at the university level and for an upgrading of mine safety and health in the mining engineering curriculum. A fundamental approach to mine safety and health is recast into the familiar 3 E's: engineering, education, and enforcement, in that order. Each is briefly reviewed and their interdependence emphasized. A unique philosophy for successfully integrating safety and health principles into the mining engineering curriculum is offered. The concept of textbook ?tailoring? is discussed and defended, permitting rapid assemblage and synthesis of existing educational materials. Final recommendations are made for a u, comprehensive approach to mine safety and health education in the undergraduate curriculum.

By way of background. it is important to keep in mind that the information presented in this paper relates specifically to synthetically produced precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) fillers. Natural calcium carbonate fillers manufactured by grinding limestone, marble and chalk, though having similar chemical and physical analyses to PCCs, normally contribute somewhat different performance properties in paint, paper and polymer systems. Many factors have been cited and numerous theories have been proposed for the observed differences. Particle size parameters, surface chemistry and particle morphology are the items most frequently mentioned. A discussion of this subject is beyond the scope of this paper.

This is a detailed report of construction experience of a tunnel built by a shield of rectangular cross section with reinforced concrete segments. In case of tunneling by a rectangular shield, there were the following problems to be overcom by technical developments; (1) structural joints between segments, (2) complexity in erector handling, (3) exact steering operation of shield and perfect filling of tail void left around the lining erected. Such rectangular shape of cross section has various advantages comparing the conventional circular shape as follows; (1) effective utilization of excavated space, (2) greater overburden depth, (3) stability of lining against unbalanced earth pressure caused by neighbouring construction.

The concept and operation of novel shaft sinking systems utilizing roadheader-type cutter booms, including mucking, conveying, and hoisting installations, are described. Selection criteria, performance data, and economic considerations for various shaft excavators are presented. Various applications of this low-cost and flexible system for civil engineering and mining projects will be discussed. The cutter booms can work in both soft ground and competent rock. Furthermore, the novel excavator can operate in ground stabilized by grouting, cementing, and freezing. The flexible cutting system can be used both for excavation of shafts, foundation pits, slopes, and for tunneling (drifting).

"Double Shield TBMs can be used in fast track projects for accelerated completion where there is limited information available on ground conditions and there are possibilities of encountering weak ground and shear zones. As such, the shielded TBMs are the primary choice of the machines in long tunnels, but face the possibility of entrapment in squeezing ground, which entails long delays and major risks. This paper examines the possibility of using ground improvement methods to increase ground strength, and thus, increase the capability of the machines to cope with squeezing ground conditions. In this study, 3D finite difference simulation of a shielded TBM in squeezing ground was performed to estimate the operational parameters including required thrust to get a machine out of an entrapment. This analysis was also used to evaluate the possibility of preventing machine jamming by the implementation of pre-excavation ground improvement to increase the strength of the ground. INTRODUCTION In order to face adverse tunneling conditions especially using a shielded TBM in squeezing ground, new shield designs, with extra thrust and torque, step shield geometry with reduced shield diameter from front to the back, and conical shape shields have been used. In addition, many of the new machines have the capability to implement ground improvement at distances up to 50 m ahead of the face in order to reinforce the ground and further increase in their chances to cope with squeezing ground conditions. While these features have been added to the machine, there has not been a thorough evaluation of their impact on improving the chances to avoid machine jamming in weak rocks at high depth, which is conducive to rapid convergence of the ground."

A three-dimension two-phase (air and dust) computer model was developed to model air velocity and respirable dust distributions in the longwall faces. This paper describes the derivation of the model including the model features, mathematical equations and boundary conditions. Example simulations were also performed for two longwall faces where measured respirable dust and air velocity distributions were available. The results indicated the model can simulate the mine conditions fairly accurately.

Important industrial minerals are separated and concentrated by froth flotation by industry today. The following descriptions are presented as an overview of the methods employed to separate and recover a few of these industrial minerals. The minerals described in this section of the book are not, by any means, the only important minerals treated by froth flotation. Other minerals, such as calcite, kaolin, wollastonite, rare earths and vermiculite were not included, primarily due to the confidential nature of the information held by the Minerals Research Laboratory and the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute. Flotation of nonmetallic minerals is sometimes viewed as alchemy. However, the art is, in reality, based on sound chemistry, experience and a little luck in the treatment of new ores. In the flotation of nonmetallic minerals, as opposed to base metal sulfides, highly specific treatment conditions are required to accomplish separations. Urban sprawl, and all its attendant problems, is upon us. In Florida, and much of the rest of the world, this has been intensified by a special problem - the coastal zone - a land of high-intensity urbanization localized where the sea and our citizens interact. Florida is blessed by a long coastline of beautiful beaches, indented by estuaries, lagoons and spring fed rivers. Rocky and sand covered islands invite habitation. A large and varied fauna and flora make recreation an avocation and work a pleasure. Accompanying these people are all the sustaining, and satellite industries that find the climate, labor, and commodity markets, cheap water transportation, and natural resources to be attractive. It is estimated that by the year 2008 a megalopolis will stretch down the Atlantic Seaboard from Georgia to encompass the Keys and extend along the Gulf to Alabama. This city will be fenced by the sea on one side and by the water management works, necessary to provide the water supply for this complex, on the other. What can we do about increasing the amount of water available for this population and decreasing the resultant wastes??? Rarely has there been tendered a more favorable opportunity for a coordinated planning and development project that will provide public access to beaches and multiple use of the coastal lands. Florida, as a peninsula swept by ocean breezes, having a largely indigenous water supply and only the beginning of the pollution of estuarine and coastal waters can cope with air, water and coastal dissipation and pollution, if we have a beginning at providing a constant water supply and at limiting pollution. This answer would appear to lie underground, where the porous limestones are interbedded with impervious fine-grained sediments and ground-water that circulates through these aquifers empty to the ocean and Gulf along the continental slopes.

After two disappointing years where most industrial minerals posted decreasing production, 1981 saw an increase in production over 1980, or at least in status quo. Several commodities did, however, post significant gains. For example, bromine posted a 14% increase; fluorspar production dropped 21% in 1980, but gained 24% in 1981; and sulfur production increased. However, perlite was off 13% and manufactured sodium sulfate off 18% in 1981, while natural sodium sulfate production remained almost even with 1980. In fact, many industrial minerals production either remained constant, increased, or decreased only slightly over 1980. Increasing energy costs had their impact on industrial minerals in 1981. Hopefully, the recent downward trend in energy costs, at least gasoline, will financially help some of the more marginal plants. The 1979 shortage of rail cars that did not carry through 1980 also did not carry through in 1981. Rail rates increased 12.8% over-all last year, while average freight rates for industrial minerals increased 15.5%, according to Neil Johnson, consultant. Also, the trucking industry posted a 5-6% decrease in rates due to deregulation. All in all, we in the industrial minerals section seem to be holding our own at least. Stanley J. In a longwall section that consisted of 7 longwall panels, there were two high pressure gas transmission pipelines across the panels burying from 3 to 10 ft. below the surface. One pipeline was 20 in. in diameter while the other was 24 in. in diameter. In order to investigate the stress conditions sustained by the pipelines during underground longwall mining, strain gages were mounted on the pipelines above panel #3, #4, and #5. Survey monuments were also installed along but near the pipelines. This paper presents a subsidence prediction method and the preliminary results of the pipelines' stress conditions as affected by underground longwall mining.

Cyclic voltammetric and potential step chronoamperometric techniques were used to study gold dissolution in cyanide solution. Three distinct anodic peaks and one cathodic peak appear on the voltammogram between -0.50 and 0.80 V vs. SCE. The corresponding reactions were proposed to explain the peaks and the passivations. The proposed reactions were in agreement with the effect of pH and cyanide on the magnitude of the peak currents. Cyclic voltammetric tests, with various vertex potentials, were also conducted to examine the proposed reactions. Steady-state currents at various potentials were obtained by potential step chronoamperometric technique and were compared with transient currents obtained by the cyclic voltammetric technique.

The Balsam Meadow Hydroelectric Project is currently under construction in central California. TMCI Construction, Inc. was subcontracted to perform the shaft enlargement and lining required for the elevator, surge and power shafts. Involved in the initial work was slashing the elevator and surge shaft into a previously excavated borehole. The elevator shaft then required a reinforced concrete lining and structural steel installation. Throughout the course of construction, numerous design changes occurred, necessitating a lining in both the power and surge shafts. These changes caused TMCI to design two underground hoisting systems to install these additional linings. An analysis of the construction methods used is now given. Introduction The Balsam Meadow Project consists of an underground hydroelectric powerhouse designed to provide additional capacity and energy to the Southern California Edison system during critical peak demand periods, and has the capability for pumped storage operation. The project is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains about 55 miles northeast of Fresno. The project will divert water presently flowing from Huntington Lake to Shaver Lake to power a single 200 megawatt turbine generator. The approach used to the shaft slashing was governed partially by the strict CAL-OSHA requirements, which became more stringent after the recent Helms' Creek accident. A scaled down sinking plant was used to minimize economic risk and to simplify the excavation and lining scheme.

Today mine shaft and slope contracts include a greater amount of ancillary work such as level and pump stations, loading pockets, rotary and side dumps and connecting raises. This ancillary work requires the application of a number of construction methods often for short periods and often at short notice if the contractor is to maintain a profitable operation. In the next decade, the number of shafts that will be sunk by a boring method will outnumber those sunk by traditional methods. This will be particularly true of the deeper shafts where water problems are minimal. The increase of bored shaft work will not decrease the work completed by the shaft sinking contractor but it will change it. A greater emphasis will be placed on the speed of construction of station and other ancillary work. To meet this challenge the contractor requires full information on the ancillary work as well as the shaft work at an early date, preferably pre-bid. The two examples discussed in this paper illustrate the importance of early information. The two main factors of shaft ancillary work construction are sequence and ground support. This paper describes two examples completed recently by The Cementation Company of America Incorporated in Arizona. The first described is a Rotary Dump-Ore Pocket-Ore Pass complex and the second described is the excavation of the Main Station Level in a 2 Station-Loading Pocket-Ore Pass complex. Several aspects of the capture of hydrophobic dust particles by droplets in sprays have been studied. The particle capture depends on several sub-processes involving collision, adhesion and engulfment. The collision events between dust particles and a single droplet were observed with a high speed motion analysis system to determine the influence of a surfactant on the capture process. In the adhesive process it was observed that the dust particles are collected at the surface of the water droplet to produce a rigid film at high dust loadings. In the presence of the surfactant, however, the particles were engulfed inside the droplet keeping a fresh surface on the droplet available for capture of more particles. A theoretical analysis is presented to take into account the role of contact angle on the penetration of particles into droplets. A significant increase in collection efficiency was observed with decrease in droplet size.

The mine is located at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur and is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend. The Betze, Post, and Meikle Mine are major deposits located in the area. The deportment of gold, its leachability, and various process options are also evaluated. Particular emphasis is given to the practical and economic considerations of ore control, and routing of ore to a process option.

After a good year in 1979-strong mineral demand, adequate prices for most metals, minimal labor problems-1980 was not so good. The US produced $24.8 billion worth of nonfuel minerals last year, up 3.5% from 1979, according to preliminary US Bureau of Mines figures. But the $800 million increase was the smallest annual gain since 1977 and reflected reduced auto and construction industry demand, strikes, and energy shortages. Preliminary figures for 68 minerals show that production of 42 decreased, 25 increased, and one was unchanged. Production of 11 of 21 US-produced minerals was up. Noteworthy mineral events in 1980 included a copper industry strike, increased gold and silver prices, troubles in the iron ore and uranium industries, discussion about a US nonfuels mineral policy, and corporate interest in mining companies as merger targets. Recessionary conditions experienced by the Western world in 1980 resulted in a slowdown in new mine development, evident in the relative scarcity of major new base metal projects. This could lead to short term supply/demand anomalies within the next few years which, in turn, could have a significant effect on metal prices, according to Mining Magazine (Jan. 1981). World Mining (Sept. 1980) noted that US mining strength is in open pit operations. A much lower tonnage is mined underground and is centralized in trona, uranium, lead, zinc, molybdenum, potash and, to a lesser extent, copper. The most notable increase in new underground mines has been in Wyoming's trona district where new mines are being developed and production will increase, the magazine said.
