The starting powders' physicochemical properties and consistency are essential for technical ceramic products to meet their performance specifications. The need for finer and more consistent powders has opened new technologies for synthesizing powders from atoms and molecules. However, submicron and near-micron powders obtained from conventional comminution and classification techniques are still competitive. This paper shows several examples from electronic ceramic applications of how we can use powder characteristics for micromanaging by design the ceramic properties such as the green and fired densities, slurry rheology, shrinkage during sintering, and the microstructure of the sintered bodies. The cross-disciplinary nature of the technology requires that the researcher not only should have a firm grip on the fundamentals of one or more disciplines, but also should be generally aware of the intricacies of other disciplines as well.

A large percentage of Southern Appalachian coal reserves are located in seams less than 36" thick. As thicker and currently more mineable deposits are exhausted, methods of underground thin-seam extraction must be developed. Past experience with highwall mining of thin-seam coal has indicated that recovery rates tend to be lower than in conventional operations. It is suspected that this will also apply to underground thin-seam mining, regardless of proposed technology or mining method. Backfilling is one alternative for thin-seam coal mining; although backfill has been used extensively in hard rock mining its use in coal mining has been limited. The ability of backfill to provide additional ground support may enhance coal recovery by allowing for the design of undersized pillars. Backfill is capable of providing additional ground support by restricting lateral deformation of surrounding coal pillars and roof. This additional support can result in significant increases in recovery from thin-seam coal deposits. However, the overall feasibility of backfill is dependent on the in situ behavior of the fill material, the properties of the fill, the effects of the filling method on the total mining operation, and the cost of filling per extra ton of coal recovered.

Joe would you stand up here. You'll be on the tag-team with Walt. Walt and Joe are in a consulting business associated with coal as well as metal and nonmetal industries. Their presentation will be on gainsharing. WALTER COOK: How many of you have gainsharing plans in place currently at your location? [show of hands] A considerable number-more than about half the room. Of those plans, how many of them do you consider as meeting your needs and being successful? [show of hands, far fewer, general audience laughter] You have all at least heard the word "gainsharing." Some of you undoubtedly aren't quite sure what gainsharing is, while others obviously have gainsharing plans in place and are looking for ways to improve them. In the short time I have now I'll be able to give you a precursory look at gainsharing and some brief ideas on where to look to improve your current plans. Relative quantitative analyses of certain mineralogical and textural properties of carbonate rocks were made with an image analysis computer. The instrument, referred to by its manufacturer as a Quantimet; consists of a petrographic microscope, a television camera and monitor, a detector, an electronic computer, and a read-out meter. Measurements were made on polished and etched specimens, standard thin sections, and on scanning electron micrographs of carbonate rocks. Critical to the success of the analysis is the preparation of the specimen in such a way that good optical contrast is obtained between the various petrographic components. The dolomite content, the pore volume, pore boundary projection, and pore size distribution of high-purity carbonate rocks were measured by image analysis methods. The frequency and size distribution of void inclusions in dolomites were determined by image analysis of scanning electron micrographs of cleaved surfaces. Image analysis methods permit rapid and quantitative assessment of various microscopic properties. The results are of reasonable accuracy and certainly are relative quantities that may be used to characterize carbonate rock materials.

The 1945 fire at the Braden (El Teniente) Copper Mine in Chile took 354 lives, and ranks as the most lethal metal mine fire in history. The mine was developed in the wall of a canyon over 900 m (3,000 ft) deep. Principal entrance was through a main haulage adit at the canyon bottom, and up through two internal shafts. Mining was by block caving from the top of the orebody with most of about 900 men on shift working in three production areas. Ore was transferred by gravity to the haulage level through a complex system of ore passes with associated ladderways. Normal mine ventilation was incast through numerous level portals and up- cast through the shafts and raises. The fire was confined to a maintenance shop just inside the portal of the lower production level. Smoke, gases and flammable vapors were drawn into the mine, and a subsequent explosion of the gases destroyed an air door and injected carbon monoxide into the workings. Falling water in a drainage raise near the fire made it downcast, which carried gases down to all the lower levels where they were drawn into the levels and then up connecting raises. Miners attempting to escape by climbing down the ladderways from the production levels were met and killed by the rising gases.

Lithium requirements in the next few decades for batteries and controlled thermonuclear fusion reactors (CTR) may exceed the availability of the current mineral and brine reserves. It is thus prudent to search for new reserves and resources to satisfy these and future lithium applications. The lithium content of the waters from the Smackover oil field. located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, ranges from 100 to 500 mp/l and could represent a substantial new reserve. Experimental evidence described in the literature indicates that a specific chelating agent dipivaloylmethane (DPM), of the diketone type, has a specific selectivity toward lithium in the presence of other metal ions in aqueous solutions. Based in part on this unique property of dipivaloylmethane, a conceptual design of a full-size plant to extract lithium from the Smackover brine is presented in this paper. This study includes alternate flow-sheet development, design information on the major units of the process, energy requirements, and an economic analysis of a facility capable of producing 106 kg of lithium per year. The economics of three different process concepts depend primarily on the amount of water needing to be evaporated from the initial oil-field feed waters in concentrating the brine. The results, as a function of production rates, are indicated only in a general manner.

Ventilation conditions in working environments are usually studied by anemometry or, in complex cases, b using special tracer gases such as SF6 and 85Kr. in conjunction with chromatographic and radioactivity techniques, respectively. In some working environments, such as underground uranium mines, however, use can be made of the natural radioactivity environment (e.g.. 222rn. 220rn, and their progeny) to investigate mine ventilation conditions of practical interest. Theoretical studies and experimental data in several underground uranium mines and mine locations show that certain thoron progeny to radon progeny concentration ratios are very good indicators of ventilation conditions. Furthermore, the growth and decay of radon progeny and thoron progeny provide valuable information on mine air residence and clearance times. Some specific examples have been analyzed, such as bacterially-assisted uranium leaching operations in a partially enclosed stope, and the effect on the underground environment of turning ventilation fans on and off for a period of time. Air residence times and other variables of interest, determined from the mine radioactivity environment, were compared with more traditional techniques, such as anemometry and tracer gas chromatography. These studies were also extended to a wet non-uranium mine which exhibited relatively high concentrations of radon and its progeny.

About 1.41 kt (45.2 million oz) of gold have been ! produced in South Dakota since 1875. South Dakota's mining laws attempt to strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection. Mining is promoted as an industry while prevention of pollution is required along with reclamation of affected lands to a beneficial use. The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources' (DENR) system of "one-stop shop- ping" for environmental permits streamlines the permit process. It fosters quick resolutions to compliance problems and helps keep enforcement actions out of the courts. Paha Sapa means "Hills that are Black" in Dakota Sioux. Appearing dark from a distance due to a thick forest of Ponderosa pine, the Black Hills were gold to many people. The exact date that gold was discovered in the Black Hills remains debatable. An inscribed stone tablet found in 1887 near Spearfish recorded these words:

The concept of optical basicity is now being widely applied to rationalize and predict the chemical properties of slags. It employs signals from a probe ion to indicate the "state" or relative "freeness" of the oxygen ions in the slag, and hence provides a fundamental measure of slag basicity. Values of the bulk optical basicity of a slag can either be measured spectroscopically in samples of transparent solid glassy slag, or calculated very simply and accurately from the chemical composition of the slag. The way in which these values vary in different systems are illustrated as isoptical basicity lines on ternary diagrams, and the patterns obtained are discussed. The difficulties associated with assigning optical basicities to the oxides of transition elements are also reviewed briefly. It has been demonstrated that these bulk values can be used as the basis of a flux control model for steelmaking to achieve end-point chemistries much more reliably. Furthermore, several correlations have been established which allow the prediction of the slag-metal distribution of various solute elements. This approach has been used to predict the phosphorus distribution at the end of steelmaking, and also to custom design fluxes for the ladle and tundish to aid in the control of residual elements in the steel such as suphur, hydrogen and nitrogen.

The Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project Site (Site) is a former uranium-ore processing facility near Moab, Utah, where production ended in 1984. The United States Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM) is responsible for remediating the site to meet 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 192 standards promulgated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency under the authority of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Tailings from the former mill were stored in an unlined impoundment (tailings pile), totaling 16 million tons of waste material. Surface cleanup has been ongoing since 2009 and consists of removal and transport of tailings via rail to an off-site disposal facility in Crescent Junction, Utah, with an estimated completion date around 2029. Gravity-driven migration of tailings fluids and recharge through the tailings pile and former on-site ore storage areas in the northeastern part of the site led to contamination of site soil and groundwater. The primary contaminant of concern is ammonia, which was present in fluids used in the milling process (DOE 2003). Uranium is a contaminant of potential concern. An interim groundwater remedy is currently in place that utilizes a system of extraction and injection wells to limit discharge of contaminated groundwater into the nearby Colorado River. Exceedance of surface water standards for ammonia are a principal concern due to potential endangered species fish habitat areas along the Colorado River adjacent to the Site. When necessary, surface water diversion is used to lower surface water ammonia concentrations when suitable habitats develop for endangered young-of-year fish. Once surface cleanup concludes and the tailings pile is removed, a formal groundwater remedy must be selected and documented in a Groundwater Compliance Action Plan (GCAP). Under Title 1 of the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act, natural flushing (i.e., monitored natural attenuation), may be selected as the groundwater remedy if it can be demonstrated that the remedy will achieve groundwater standards within 100 years. The 40 CFR 192 groundwater standard for uranium is 44 micrograms per liter (μg/L), and the target groundwater concentration of ammonia based on adverse effects on local fish species is 3 milligrams per liter (mg/L). A collaboration with Geosyntec Consultants, Inc. (Geosyntec), the Moab UMTRA Project team, the DOE Office of Legacy Management, the DOE-EM, and the Network of National Laboratories for Environmental Management and Stewardship was held in 2022 with the goal to generate actionable recommendations to develop a GCAP for the Site. The primary recommendation was development of a groundwater fate and transport model to predict the remedial timeframe under various groundwater remedies. This paper presents the results of soil and groundwater sampling, geochemical modelling, and laboratory column and batch reactor testing that will be used to parameterize a numerical model for estimating the remedial timeframe under various scenarios, including natural flushing.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a United States Department of Energy facility located in southeastern New Mexico. It is designed for the safe disposal of transuranic radioactive waste in deep geologic salt beds. Westinghouse TRU Solutions, LLC, the managing and operating contractor, undertook a project to simulate the processes at WIPP in order to identify bottlenecks and optimize available resources. The activities simulated in the model included the receipt, processing and disposal of radioactive waste underground, the mining of new areas for future waste disposal and the transportation of salt out of the mine. The complexity of the processes and the interactive requirements between processes required the use of advanced modeling techniques. The simulation model includes a huge number of locations and path network node points, with movement to and from the locations controlled using parameters rather than explicit routing. Information for the timing and sequence of the mining and nuclear waste emplacement operations is brought into the model via spreadsheets. Arrays in the simulation model keep track of past and future events that occur. Routing to the multiple possible positions in the underground mine is done using attributes, and system functions within ProModel in order to allow for a highly flexible sequence of planned events and to reduce the level of effort in creating the ProModel processing. Considerable use of subroutines in the simulation model is utilized for parametric decision-making that is repetitive. This presentation describes the modeling techniques used to accurately simulate the surface and underground operations. The surface and underground operations are considerably different, thus they will be treated in their own sections.

This paper provides a summary of the studies performed over a period of more than fifteen years by the Italian National Research Council's Mineral Processing Institute in Rome to develop applications for the use of chelating reagents in the flotation of metallic minerals. A description is given of the various phases through which the studied progressed, starting with the combined use of commercial chelating reagents and a neutral oil and then moving on to the synthesis of new long-chain chelate collectors for the flotation of sulphide and oxidized Pb, Zn and Cu minerals. After a series of preliminary tests which confirmed the possibility of floating various metallic minerals with commercial reagents containing chelating groups exerting specific action on given cations, the studies were addressed to the development of a theoretical method of choosing chelating groups that exert selective action on one metallic mineral rather than others. The theoretical approach was based on thermodynamic data concerning the chemical equilibria in solution. The validity of the method has been proved in numerous cases by flotation tests on pure minerals. Subsequently the research was directed towards the design and synthesis of reagents with a mixed aliphatic-aromatic structure containing chelating groups for Pb and Zn and an alcoxyl chain of various length, position and configuration. The flotation results obtained on oxidized and mixed Zn-Pb ores provided interesting pointers for designing the nonpolar portion. The structural criteria identified via these studies were interpreted on the basis of chemical and steric considerations. A description is given of a new synthetic chelate collector which is effective in the selective flotation of Cu minerals from complex sulphides. The fact that this reagents is more selective than xanthate is demonstrated by comparative flotation tests on actual ores.

Shotcrete is used both in mining and tunnelling for supporting rock. Both dry and wet processes are used for shotcreting, and each produces good quality concrete. Thick shotcrete layers function as a concrete arch supporting loose rock. Thin layers prevent relative movements between the blocks of rock due to the fine concrete in the cracks and joints. No progressive fallouts occur since key blocks are kept in place. Rockbolts are often used together with shotcrete in order to create an arch around the tunnel making the rock to support itself. Shotcrete is sprayed either manually or by means of mechanized equipment. The aim is to spray required the layer thickness in one pass and with a minimum amount of rebound. Sprayed layers should also be as even as possible. The tip of the nozzle should be moved in circular movements. The shotcrete should be sprayed at a right angle to the rock surface; the optimum distance from the nozzle to the application surface must be found by experiment. In a mine shotcreting forms a materials handling system which includes batching, transporting and the actual shotcreting. The equipment used vary depending on the spraying method, mining conditions and the location of the mine. Shotcreting is performed with a purpose-designed unit in most cases where operation is mechanized. The shotcreting unit consists of a spraying machine with a hose and a nozzle, an additive system, a manipulator and a mobile carrier with all the necessary controls and accessories. The key element of the unit is the shotcreting manipulator which holds and guides the nozzle as required. The manipulators currently in use are hydraulically operated, and their remote controlled booms are also often called robots. These manipulators have enabled users to increase their output capacities, to remove the operator away from unsafe areas and from the influence of dust and rebound. Furthermore, they improve the shotcrete quality and reduce shotcreting costs.

The production of soda ash from trona (sodium sesquicarbonate, Na2CO3•NaHCO3•2H2O) resources has completely displaced the production of synthetic soda ash in the USA. Further, the utilization of other trona resources is under consideration in China, Turkey, etc. Recent research has been concerned with the development of flotation technology for the trona industry. In this regard studies on the flotation behavior of sodium carbonate salts: trona, sodium carbonate monohydrate and decahydrate, as well as the flotation behavior of sodium bicarbonate, are reported for both cationic (dodecyl ammonium hydrochloride) and anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate) collectors. It has been found that strong flotation of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) can be achieved with 100% recovery, while the other sodium carbonate salts do not float well. These results have been explained by FTIR analysis of aqueous solutions of Na2CO3and NaHCO3in a range of concentrations from very dilute to saturated conditions. The changes in the shape of the O-H stretching band of water are correlated with the flotation behavior of Na2CO3salts and NaHCO3. In addition, the absorption band of the carbonate ion at ca. 1385 cm-1is used to monitor its interactions with water and/or other ions in solution. The infrared results demonstrate thatNa2CO3acts as a water structure maker, leading to an extensively hydrated surface that accounts for the poor flotation of most sodium carbonate salts. In contrast, NaHCO3does not have this characteristic and consequently complete flotation is possible with both cationic and anionic collectors. These results support the previous water structure analysis for soluble salt flotation of alkali halides and other oxyanion salts.

Los tipos, tamaños y número de trituradores empleados en un sistema completo de reducción varían con factores tales como: el volumen de mineral que debe ser procesado, tamaño de la mina, tamaño máximo del todo-uno, dureza del mineral y de su roca soporte y tamano requerido para el producto final. Básicamente, sólo existen tres tipos distintos de equipos de trituración para la etapa primaria. Estos son: machacadoras de mandíbulas, trituradores giratorios y molinos de impactos, y cada uno tiene unas características operativas propias. Las trituradoras de mandíbulas operan por aplastamiento de las rocas entre dos paredes, una fija y otra móvil, en una cavidad determinada. Han sido ensayadas variaciones en la caída y movimiento, pero la mayoría de las máquinas del tipo Blake tienen un ángulo de trituración de aproximadamente 27° entre las mandíbulas fijas y móviles. El principio de trabajo del triturador giratorio es muy simple. Si un cono es montado en un eje vertical y la parte superior del eje se sitúa estacionaria mientras que la parte inferior gira excéntricamente, el cono tendrá también un movimiento excéntrico. Si el cono se coloca en una carcasa conveniente se movers aproximándose y retrocediendo de las paredes que lo contienen a la vez que gira. Si el cono y las paredes de la carcasa son suficientemente robustas y pesadas, cualquier cosa apresada entre ellas será triturada. Al lado de los incrementos de la eficacia desarrollados por las continuas acciones de trituración y el curvado de las caras de trituración, los trituradores del tipo giratorio tienen las siguientes ventajas: 1. La gran abertura de alimentación disponibles en comparación con trituradores de otro tipo. 2. El alto rango de tamaños y capacidades, que se encuentran entre 600 y 6.000 toneladas por hora. 3. Four different types of fire suppression systems were evaluated in large-scale fire experiments to study the effect of air velocity on the effectiveness to extinguish conveyor belt fires. The four different types of suppression systems were water sprinkler, deluge type water spray, and two different dry chemical fire suppression systems. The large-scale fire tests were conducted with 72-in-wide fire resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration flame resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G Flame Test). Each fire suppression system was tested at air velocities of 500-550 feet per minute (fpm) and 1350-1500 fpm. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each fire suppression system. Both of the water-based fire suppression systems were able to suppress the fire to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire extinguisher. However, the amount of water needed to suppress the fire to the point where a miner could walk up to extinguish any smoldering belting was greater than the current MSHA regulations require. MSHA regulations only require 10 minutes of water supply to the suppression system. In the test set up neither of these systems would have suppressed the fire had the water been turned off to the system after 10 minutes. The dry chemical suppression systems produced mixed results. Dry chemical suppression system A did not suppress the conveyor belt fire at either air velocity. Dry chemical system B suppressed the fire at 500 fpm air velocity, but produced mixed results at the higher air velocity. Details are presented on the large-scale fire test set-up, arrangement of the fire suppression systems, and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity on fire suppression system design and performance. Este capítulo revisa las etapas que deben seguirse desde el momento de considerar la molienda autógena en el desarrollo de un nuevo depósito de mineral o en la expansión de una planta existente, hasta la compra de un molino autógeno. En este caso el término autógeno incluye: semi-autógeno, molinos de pebbles secundarios y molino de bolos (trozos), así como los sistemas de molienda autógena total. También se han incluido las alternativas por vía húmeda y seca. Antes de programar el ensayo debe decidirse cuantas muestras brutas son requeridas para calcular propiamente las posibilidades de molienda autógena del depósito. También ha de tomarse la decisión, de como y donde deben tomarse las muestras, por ejemplo: planta piloto situada en el sitio de localización de la planta o en otro lugar establecido; molienda en húmedo y/o en seco....etc. En el mismo programa del ensayo se obtendrán ciertos datos fundamentales. Los ensayos deberán incluir un trabajo suficiente. para determinar cuál de las moliendas, totalmente autógena o semi-autógena, debe utilizarse; y qué tipo produce la máxima eficacia en la potencia consumida. También, los otros datos pertinentes deben ser recolectados, como por ejemplo: potencias, tonelajes, alimentación, carga, tamaño del producto, carga circulante, etc. Si es necesaria una molienda secundaria para obtener el tamano final, la decisión de qué molienda debe emplearse (molino de pebbles o molino de bolas) puede requerirse un ensayo de trabajo adicional. Finalmente, la concentración del mineral puede jugar un papel importante en la selección del circuito y debería ser una parte del ensayo final una vez que se ha establecido la molienda. Para determinar qué tipo de molinos pueden satisfacer los requerimientos establecidos por la planta piloto, debe tomarse una escala para ciertos datos como: potencia del molino, consumo de acero, simple o doble etapa de molienda, tipo de molino secundario. "Highwall miners continue to be implemented by operations to increase recovery, improve margins, and justify higher stripping ratios as high quality surface reserves become increasingly rare. Many times, operations facilitate projected underground operations by leaving an intact highwall for development purposes. These facts result in larger highwalls that are left standing for increased periods of time prior to reclamation. As a consequence, worker exposure and risk is also elevated, resulting in higher potential for accidents or fatalities relating to surface highwalls. Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent on both geologic and mining factors. Dynamic numerical modeling offers the capability to assess possible stability issues related to blasting-induced ground vibrations. Research has been conducted to evaluate the effect of highwall stability due to ground vibrations from blasting events. Additionally, the relationship of amplitude and frequency, and their impact on highwall stability is investigated. The results of this modeling indicate that amplitude has little impact on stability. However, frequency has a significant impact on highwall stability. INTRODUCTION The number of mining fatalities has declined since 2010, and 2016 is currently on pace to continue this trend (MSHA 2016). This decline can be directly correlated to the decline in surface mining activity and the overall decline of the coal industry. However, since 2002 the percentage of surface coal mine fatalities associated with highwall activities remains relatively high, constituting approximately 15% of all surface mine fatalities. 2014 was the first year with a highwall failure fatality since 2011. Most recent surface coal mining fatalities are associated with machinery and haulage. Table 1 provides a summary of the total surface coal mining fatalities, and the number of highwall failure fatalities dating back to 2010.Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent upon geology and geologic discontinuities within the rock mass, along with highwall geometry, standing time, and applied stresses. Another possible concern that has not been previously investigated is the effect of blasting-induced stresses on highwall stability and the stability of web/barrier pillar systems as a result of ground vibrations from blasting events. Many modern surface coal mines employ numerous extraction fronts that rely on blasting for primary rock breakage. This results in highwall and highwall pillar systems experiencing blasting-induced stresses of many different types and magnitudes."

Anionic conditioning of phosphate ores prior to fatty acid flotation is a very critical step that determines the eventual selectivity, recovery and hence the economics of the process. However the chemical mechanisms operating during this conditioning step are not established. Several studies have been conducted in the past to determine the mode of interaction of collectors with the phosphate fractions however these have been done on a laboratory scale using pure phosphate minerals. In order to test the relevance of the observed effects to plant practice in this work a comprehensive survey of plant practice was first conducted and then adsorption on flotation feed and francolite were studied under simulated plant conditions. Effects of conditioning energy and water chemistry as well as solids loading and fuel oil were determined. Most importantly, different adsorption mechanisms were found to be dominant under laboratory and plant conditions. In plant water, there was some physisorption of oleic acid on phosphate flotation feed and francolite in addition to chemisorption. However, in distilled water under laboratory conditions only chemisorption was detected. Fuel oil reduced the residual oleic acid in solution after adsorption, which explains the beneficial role of extender in phosphate flotation. The dissolved species in solution arising from the flotation feed or plant processing water are shown to clearly play a major role in determining the adsorption of oleic acid on the substrates. The study also specifically demonstrates the importance of conducting research tests under plant mixing conditions and plant water chemistry for the results to be useful commercially.

Mining wastes have received individual attention under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) since its inception, in recognition of the special characteristics that distinguish mining wastes from other solid wastes. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized that: - Mining wastes are generated in much larger volumes than other industrial wastes. Most material handled in mining is waste (over 99% in many cases) and not marketable product, whereas waste is a small portion of raw materials used in most industries. Consequently, controls used for hazardous wastes may be technically infeasible or economically impractical. - Nearly all mining waste is managed at the site of generation and is land-disposed. . - Mining wastes typically pose lower hazards than other industrial wastes. Mining operations are located predominantly in sparsely populated areas and in arid or semi-arid areas with little surface water runoff and deeper water tables.
