A review of published literature on the biosorption of metals using nonliving biomass is presented. Factors such as pH, temperature, initial metal concentration, biomass loading, the presence of co-ions and the pretreatment of biomass influence the metal uptake by biomass. Although few generalizations are possible, unified theories regarding the mechanism of uptake are not available. Therefore, the above aspects of metal biosorption have to be defined individually for each biomass and metal-ion pair.

Golder Moffitt and Associates (GMA)", were commissioned to reassess a large metallic low grade orebody. One of the aims of the study was to estimate recoverable reserves. Recoverable reserves are here defined as ore reserves for a specific mining block size. The mining block is that block on which the decision that the material is ore or waste is made. Recoverable reserves take into consideration mining methods. New methods for solving this type of problem were recently developed in Geostatistics and so for this reason GMA called for the technical assistance of the Centre de Geostatistique (C.G). The complete estimation was done using the geostatistical techniques and programs of the C.G together with some of the programs of GMA. As the mine was in production at the time the study commenced it was-possible to make frequent checks on the estimated values using blast-hole data. The ore reserves were also estimated using the more conventional interpolation method of inverse square of distance weighting.

Some attempts were made to recover and remove heavy metal elements, such as uranium, copper and chromium, from aqueous systems by using several phosphate compounds. The phosphorylated derivatives of polysaccharides, chitin phosphate, chitosan phosphate and cellulose phosphate, have high abilities to accumulate heavy metals, such as uranium, copper, manganese, cobalt, cadmium, zinc, nickel and chromium, compared with non-phosphorylated polysaccharides. In order to obtain basic information on the recovery and removal of uranium that may be present in industrial effluents, mine waste water and seawater, the adsorption of uranium by chitin phosphate and chitosan phosphate was investigated in details. The adsorption of uranium by chitin phosphate and chitosan phosphate was much greater than copper, cadmium, manganese, zinc, cobalt, nickel, magnesium and calcium. The adsorption of uranium was very rapid and was affected by pH of the solution, temperature. granule radius and co-existence of carbonate ion. The amounts of uranium adsorbed on the adsorbents increased linearly as the external uranium concentration increased. Uranium adsorbed on chitin phosphate easily desorbed with diluted sodium carbonate solution. On the other hand, uranyl and cobalt ions were separated from each other by using chitin phosphate. Along with these fundamental research, some attempts were made to recover uranium from seawater.

Since first introduced, the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) has been widely accepted as a tool for geologic characterization and mine planning. This paper discusses the application of the CMRR to another practical ground-control problem: extended cuts. Extended cuts, i.e., cuts greater than 6 m (20 ft) in length, are commonly used with remote-control continuous miners. Extended cuts can greatly increase productivity, but they have been associated with a number of fatal roof-falls. When extended cuts are attempted in weak roof material, the roof may collapse before it can be bolted Until now, it has not been possible to predict where conditions may not be suitable for extended cuts. In this study, data on the CMRR and extended-cut experience were collected at 36 mines in seven of the United States. It was found that, when the CMRR was greater than 56, deep cuts were routine in nearly every case. When the CMRR was less than 37, extended cuts were almost never taken, and, when the CMRR was between 38 and 56, extended cuts were sometimes, but not always, feasible. The data also show that extended cuts are less likely to be stable if either the entry span or the depth of cover increases.

The throughput and energy efficiency of comminution circuits is reduced when ore characteristics change, causing bottlenecks in some portions of the circuit while leaving excess capacity in others. The results of analysis of three years of daily grinding circuit operating data for a full-scale plant has shown that the location of bottle-necks in the circuit will change depending on the nature of the feed ore. The circuit tends to be limited by the primary mill capacity when the ore hardness increases, and limited by the secondary mill capacity with softer ores. Two methods are considered for shifting load in the circuit to relieve bottlenecks by taking advantage of excess capacity in other parts of the circuit: 1) Addition of supplemental comminution operations, such as high-pressure grinding rolls, to process specific size fractions that are not handled efficiently by the primary mill; and 2) Use of screens to shift grinding load upstream from the secondary mills back to the primary mills. In the case of the plant examined in this study, it was found that 58% of the time there was sufficient excess capacity in the primary mills that the throughput of the circuit could have been increased by using screens to shift the grinding load from the secondary mills to the primary mills.

The Thermal/Structural Interactions (TSI) In Situ Tests are a series of large scale, well instrumented tests that have been constructed at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in southeastern New Mexico. As a precursor to the TSI tests, a ventilation drift (Room D) was mined, drilled and instrumented. This room provided the contractor an excellent area to practice controlled construction methods and was a proving ground for construction monitoring and documentation methods. All gages in this first room have been monitored since their initial installation, which has provided a small, but representative, data base. These data also were the first to be available from any TSI area for analysis. This paper discusses the construction activities in Room D and the data generated from the construction and drilling. Deformation of the room is compared briefly to numerical calculations that used a rather simple creep model as a reference. The constitutive model for salt, it appears, must be improved before it can predict the underground deformations.

This paper contains the geometallurgical studies, performed for Mineração Rio do Norte bauxites, applied to a selected area belonging to Plateau Saracá III, referring to an exploitation period of one year and three months, approximately. It is worth mentioning that Mineração Rio do Norte has the biggest bauxite operation in Brazil producing 8,500,000 tons of concentrate per year. The studies included wide investigations directed to the final objective of establishing a precise mining and production planning, based on the different behavior of the distinct bauxite ores, when submitted to industrial processes. Geometallurgy can be defined as the study of the regionalization (space distribution) of the metallurgical variables of a mineral deposit. This study involves and integrates all process engineering, geology, geostatistics and mining planning, among others. The development and application of the geometallugical studies to Mineração Rio do Norte were motivated by several reasons and necessities, among them: 1. Improving the forecast of the amount of concentrate (metallurgical mass yield) produced; 2. Improving the equipment operational efficiency, providing a more homogeneous feed; 3. Conducting a more precise material balance that permits a better daily, monthly and yearly production control; 4. Improving the forecasts for the final products generated by each ore type; 5. Obtaining better knowledge of the behavior of several ore types, submitted to the different process unit operations; 6. Promoting adequate ore blending, producing an homogeneous feed during mining operation.

The xanthate adsorption mechanism on pyrite was investigated with an emphasis on solubility studies. Additionally, adsorption studies, Eh and infrared spectrophotometer measurements were performed. Pyrite floats at pH levels between 3 and 6 using ethyl and amyl xanthates with a maximum at pH 4. The solubility of pyrite in the absence and presence of xanthate was investigated in detail with respect to pH and conditioning time. Experimental results showed that the solubility of pyrite increases from 60 to 120 ppm (10-3 to 2x10-3 mol/ L) in the presence of xanthate at pH 3. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of ferric xanthate, dixanthogen and pyrite conditioned with xanthate indicated that dixanthogen is the only species that can be determined on the pyrite surface. Adsorption tests showed that the highest level of xanthate adsorption was in the acidic range; yet higher adsorption densities were detected in neutral solutions compared to alkaline conditions. Electrochemical data suggest that the doubling of the iron concentration is due to the reduction of ferric ion to ferrous by xanthate while xanthate is oxidized to dixanthogen. Dixanthogen formation together with the hydrophobic iron hydroxy-xanthate complex on the surface is proposed to be responsible for pyrite flotation. This paper concern the specific adsorption of sulfate anions on nonmetallic minerals and its role in flotation. The specific surface affinity of sulfate ions in various systems has been observed in the results of electrokinetic measurements that show conditions under which sodium sulfate can reverse the sign of the zeta potential. The electrical double layer model provides a means for interpreting the results and for estimating the free energy of adsorption of sulfate ions. Because of their surface activity, sulfate ions not only can function as a depressant in the flotation of oxide minerals with physisorbed anionic collectors but also can function as an activator for flotation with physisorbed cationic collectors. Their role in depressing or enhancing the flotation of the sparingly-soluble mineral barite is also explained in terms of the double layer model.

The Çayirhan coal basin is located 124 km (77 miles) west of Ankara,Turkey. With approximately 520 Mt (570 million st) of lignite reserves, the Neogene Çayirhan basin is one of the important coal districts of the central Anatolia region. The Çoraklar formation consists of crossbedded sandstone, channel fill conglomerates, mudstones, carbonaceous shales and volcanoclastic pebblestones, which are fluvial in origin. The lower and upper lignite seams occur, respectively, in the lower and the uppermost parts of the Çoraklar formation. The lignite deposits are in the Çayirhan and Koyunagili portions of the Beypazari Neogene basin. The Çayirhan coalfield consists of lower and upper lignite seams. The lower lignite seam does not outcrop at the surface. Its lateral discontinuity and relatively low sulfur content, plus sedimentologic and stratigraphic features of the associated sediments, indicate a fluvial origin. Thus, the lateral spreading and geometry of the lower lignite deposits were controlled by the channel, flood plain and well drained marshes of a fluvial system. The mining method employed at Çayirhan is the fullymechanized, retreat, working longwall with caving system. Due to ventilation, haulage and tectonic conditions, panel lengths from 0.6 to 1.7km (0.4 to 1.1 miles) are chosen, and 220-m (720ft) face lengths are used. The annual coal production is 2.2 Mt (2.4 million st).

This paper is a summary of the author's industrial experiences on the selection and optimization of flotation reagent schemes for the recovery of gold species. The trends given are a composite of data and experiences gained on 24 different gold ores from around the globe. The primary emphasis is on the benefits of matching the associated gold mineralogy to a reagent scheme most appropriate for that mineralogy. Two general categories are discussed: the flotation of free or native gold species and the flotation of gold associated with a variety of sulfide minerals. Important plant operating factors influencing each of these two categories are presented with supporting examples. Carefully matching reagent chemistry and appropriate operating conditions to any given gold-bearing ore will not only lower the total reagent cost but, more importantly, can lead to measurable increases in gold recovery.

The Bureau of Mines used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas to evaluate the effectiveness of gob ventilation and/or sealing practices at three coal mines, each having different problems associated with their mined-out areas. The purpose of these ventilation studies was to better understand whether current techniques employed for ventilation or sealing are successful at minimizing the potential for gob fires and explosions. The work performed at each mine is discussed: One is a longwall operation that uses ventilation to carry off hazardous gases, and two are room-and-pillar operations, each with far different concerns, that seal off the gobs to isolate them from the main mine ventilation. In all cases, employment of the Bureau's SF6 tracer gas technique resulted in answers to questions raised by the mine operators concerning the effectiveness of their gob ventilation or sealing practices in preventing mine fires.

The Steeple Rock district in New Mexico is a major epithermal gold-silver district that exhibits district zoning. Five types of ore deposits occur within the district: •base-metal veins (with gold and silver) form the center of the district and occur along the Carlisle fault, •gold-silver veins along northwest-trending faults and outward from the base-metal veins, •copper-silver veins along the margins of the district, •fluorite veins along the margins of the district, and •manganese veins along the margins of the district. Areas of older acid-sulfate alteration occur throughout the district and also exhibit the following zoning: massive silica/chert zone (inner), silicified zone and clay zone (outer). This alteration overlies regional alkali-chloride (propylitic to argillic to sericitic) alteration. Synthesis of available data suggests the acid-sulfate alteration is related to a shallow, but older, epithermal hot-springs system. Subsequently, younger epithermal veins formed along faults.

Production trends have been analyzed for 82 gob gas ventholes on 7 longwall panels in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed, Pennsylvania. Cumulative production from individual holes was found to vary considerably, ranging from 0.03 x 106 m' to 10.1 x 106 m3. Peak production rates were generally about 0.03 to 0.06 x 106 &/d, but rates over 0.10 x 106 m3/d were observed. The variability of gas production from individual holes can be attributed to several factors including: completion practices and problems, the extent of fracture development in the strata above the extracted panel, water production, and location on the panel. Of particular significance, is hole location. Holes on the ends of the panels, where overburden strata are in tension due to the support of the surrounding pillars, were generally the highest and longest producers. This observation led to the experimental placement of gob gas ventholes in the zone of tension along the margin of a panel, instead of in the traditional centerline location which is in compression. Analysis of gob gas production data indicates that the experimental near-margin holes produced 77 pct more gas than did centerline holes on the same panel.

With the invention of prime movers, it was initially power engineering which dominated the development of industrial history before it was replaced by production techniques resulting from the more widespread use of machines. With the advances in the field of data processing and with the introduction of novel communication techniques, it is information technology- which today is having an ever increasing impact on technological progress. The main objectives of information technology in this context are a positive influence on the ?time? factor as well as the provision of tools to handle the complexity governing many operational processes through a concentration of information for the decision-making process. The German hardcoal industry became aware of the chances inherent in these new technological possibilities for the optimization of operational sequences and of decision-making and planning processes as a potential for success at an early stage and it has worked out a purposeful concept for their implementation.

The application of simulation to production planning at a large, complex open-pit mining operation proved to be challenging and enlightening. The mine is divided into two separate pits and several dump areas which are served by the same truck fleet. The operating system consisted of shovels of two different sizes, wheel loaders, and a fleet of three different truck types moving material from seven source locations to ten dumping sites. The interconnecting haulroad network included many common segments. There were operating constraints unique to the system, such as: traffic rules; manpower limitations; shovel, material-type, and destination priorities and production limitations; and a unique, non-centralized dispatching method for truck distribution. The truck distribution was further constrained by the matching of trucks to shovels, loaders, and destinations by truck type. The gathering and transformation of input data as well as the evaluation of results and validation of the model were also challenging. Despite a high level of sophistication in production reporting, some input data were neither readily available nor backed by field observation. As a result, many innovative techniques had to be used to develop realistic input data and to validate the simulation results. Nevertheless, this case study definitely proved the feasibility of applying computer simulation techniques to short and long range mine planning and budgeting at a large, complex mining operation.

Introduction The minerals exploration business, like many businesses, is faced with the problem of valuing future, risky cashflows. These cashflows are derived from those mineral deposits which have been successfully commercialized. Many deposits, however, do not have the quantities or grade of ore to be considered economic at the projected metal prices using the traditional tools of the Capital Asset Pricing Model and discounted cashflow analyses. If one calculates the future revenues, costs and cashflows of one these marginal properties, and discounted it at the appropriate risk-adjusted discount rate, it may have a negative present value. Yet such a property may still have real, positive value in the marketplace. Why would a firm pay money for a property with an (apparent) minus present value? Mining properties such as these are bought and sold in arms- length transactions on a regular basis. Why is this so? Part of the reason relates to the nature of ore reserve information. To generate cashflows, the analyst must t assume that the reserve information is known with certainty when, in fact, reserves are not known with certainty. Mineral reserves are a function of commodity price, extraction costs and the level of (usually drilling) information about the reserves. This paper presents the results of an application of the PSU/USBM Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (1) to a large stripping mine in the Southwestern Coalfield. The specific objective of the study was to demonstrate the application of the simulator to a complex multi-pit operation, with emphasis on simulating short term and long term production plans recommended for the mine by Theodore Barry Associates (2). Mine Description The mine is located in the Southwestern Coalfield, which encompasses parts of the states of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. The lease area presently covers 121500 x 103 m2 (30000 acres) in a strip 37.007 x 103 m (23 miles) from north to south and up to 1609 m (1 mile) in width, located at an elevation above 1525 m (5000 ft). Three gently dipping coal seams are present, of which the upper seam (#3) averages 0-5.5 m (0-18 ft); the intermediate seam (#2) averages 0-1.2 m (0-4 ft); and the lower seam (#1) averages 0-2.4 m (0-8 ft). Overburden is mixed sand, gravel, calcareous clay, caliche and sandstone, with calcareous shale and sandstone burden between seams. Where the seams are covered by less than 6.1 m (20 ft) of overburden, they are generally weathered and oxidized and are not extracted. Stripping ratios have ranged from 3.5 to 6.0 with an average of 5.4. All future plans were based on a stripping ratio of 5.3.

Although the concept of centrifugal recovery has been around in one form or another for many years, it has not been until recent times that it has become clearly understood and properly put into perspective. Simplistic in theory, it is when one begins to examine the variables involved that the true complexities of this matter begin to emerge. In creating an enhanced g force concentrator, there are many aspects both positive and negative that are encountered. Many conditions that are inherent to all conventional 1 g concentrators do not apply to centrifugal concentrators and therefore very few cm factors exist between them. In developing this technology, virtually all principles were proven by method of trial and error. Among the topics discussed are the effect of g force enhancement on particulate behavior with respect to size and shape, density, enrichment, fluidization, and the "teeter principle". In addition, we will discuss the physical effects of g force enhancement with respect to manufacturing in the areas of abrasion, bearings, and vibration. In discussing the recovery parameters of centrifugal concentrators we will draw direct comparisons to various other recovery methods, outlining the conditions most favorable to their application.

Environmental considerations related to the disposal of coal combustion byproducts (CCBs) and the impacts of deforestation associated with the harvesting of timber for utilization as roof supports in mines should become more severe in the future, as landfill space and suitable timber reserves become more scarce. To help address these concerns, lightweight artificial supports, such as post and crib elements, that use large percentages of coal combustion byproducts as aggregate have been developed for use in underground mines. These structural products show equal or better engineering characteristics than timber, and they have the potential to replace timber support in underground mines. CCB-based ultralight structural material (ULSM) has also been developed and commercialized for use in the construction of ventilation stoppings in underground mines. The bulk densities of these blocks range from 0.40 to 0.64 g/cm3 (25 to 40 lb per cu ft) with more than 75% CCBs. Efforts are also given to develop and demonstrate large volume CCB-based subgrade improvement technique for road construction. Soil treated with SIUC fluidized-bed combustion (FBC) fly ash developed an immediate bearing value exceeding 25% with a swelling strain of less than I %, which is greater than untreated soils, and met Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) standard specifications. In this paper, development procedures, engineering characteristics and beneficial uses of CCB-based structural products are given.
