Vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalyst has been utilized to oxidize SO2 to SO3 since the early 1900?s. This versatile product displaced the expensive and easily-poisoned platinum-based catalyst in nearly all applications by the 1930?s. MECS has been manufacturing the vanadium-based catalyst since 1925 and today is the leading supplier in the world of sulphuric acid catalysts in a variety of forms. Currently, MECS has world-wide customer/technical support for the catalyst as well as a dedicated catalyst manufacturing plant in Martinez, California. MECS also has a strong technical and research and development program dedicated to creating new and improved products and services. This paper will describe some of the technical details of vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalysts as well as offering a unique look into how caesium-promoted MECS catalysts can be used in single and double absorption acid plants, and off-gas plants running on irregular gas feeds, to reduce emissions and pre-heater run times. An update on MECS technical services extended for use in characterizing converter performance is also presented.

This paper provides an overview of possible approaches for structuring the ventilation systems for mines that will become operational within the next decade. Features addressed in the paper include: aspects of airway design and layout in the absence of centralized vertical return shafts, the impact of using diesel-powered trackless equipment in conjunction with conveyor belts in the development and production phases of the project, and the need to balance increasing electrical power costs against the requirement for reduced capital expenditure. The paper provides brief descriptions of the strategies employed in real-life situations and presents an overview of various operational parameters affecting the design of ventilation systems that will be used as ?platforms? for much deeper mines in the future.

One of the most important factors leading to the success of a cement plant is its location. A multicriteria decision-making method is used to rank alternative plant locations. The set of criteria is established and corresponding criteria should be established for each case study, although this multicriteria decision-making approach has broader applicability. In this paper, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with 5 criteria is used to develop a location evaluation hierarchy for an alumina?cement plant in East Azerbaijan province of Iran. Five alternatives for the plant location are evaluated. The main criteria are transportation, water supply, power supply, fuel supply and land. Other criteria have the same importance as these five alternatives. The alternatives are ranked by a multicriteria method and the best site is proposed. The mechanical behaviors of fully-grouted long-embedded cablebolts actually used in situ are very non-linear in pull tests and are different from those of short-embedded cablebolts. We have conducted the pull tests of long-embedded cablebolts installed in mockup rock test blocks, which are 4m in the longitudinal length. In order to investigate the mechanical behaviors inside the test block, the axial load distribution along the cablebolt and locations of acoustic emission events were measured during each pull test. It was found that the axial force distributions were quite linear and that the gradients were interpreted as the grout bond strength by taking into consideration the stress balance at the infinitesimal segment of a cablebolt. Les boulons-câbles longs entièrement cimentés qui sont réellement utilisés sur place présentent, au cours des essais de traction, des comportements mécaniques considérablement non linéaires et différents de ceux des boulons-câbles courts. Nous avons mené des essais de traction des boulons-câbles longs installés dans une maquette de fond rocheux servant d’éprouvette d’une longueur longitudinale de 4 m. Afin d’étudier les comportements mécaniques intérieurs de l’éprouvette, la répartition de la force axiale du boulon-câble et l’émission acoustique ont été mesurées durant chaque essai de traction. Il s’est avéré que les répartitions de la force axiale sont sensiblement linéaires et que leurs gradients représentent la résistance d’adhésion en prenant en compte l’équilibre de contraintes à la partie infinitésimale d’un boulon-câble. Das mechanische Verhalten von ganz eingegossenen, lang eingebetteten Kabelbolzen, die vor Ort eingesetzt werden, ist bei Zugprüfungen sehr nichtlinear und anders als das von kurz eingebetteten Kabelbolzen. Es wurden Zugprüfungen mit lang eingebetteten Kabelbolzen durchgeführt, die in Prüfblöcken (Gesteinsattrappen) mit 4 m Länge eingelassen waren. Zur Untersuchung des mechanischen Verhaltens in den Prüfblöcken wurden die Axiallastverteilung entlang des Kabelbolzens sowie das Auftreten von Schallemission im Verlauf jeder Zugprüfung gemessen. Es ergab sich, dass die axiale Kraftverteilung recht linear ist, und die Gradienten wurden unter Berücksichtigung des Kräftegleichgewichts am infinitesimal kleinen Punkt eines Kabelbolzens als Haftfestigkeit interpretiert.

The Namibian Copper Joint Venture has been formed to undertake development of the Haib copper deposit, one of the largest undeveloped copper resources in Africa. The development programme includes extensive hydrometallurgical testwork that is being managed by Kvaerner Metals (formerly Davy International).Various parts of the programme have been contracted to four third-party laboratories. The testwork involves sample selection and characterization, amenability tests, and a parametric study on the leaching variables. All portions of the programme are described and the results a represented. The ores selected for testing are quartz feldspar porphyries. The amenability tests include ?mapping? studies to assess optimum leach conditions, tests at high oxidation potentials, oxidation with various bacterial strains, and heap leach modelling. The parametric programme includes such variables as ore grade, leach temperature, crush size, pH, and ferric iron content of the lixiviant. Testing was done on both whole ore and concentrate. Results show that bacterial leaching is effective and that ore grade and temperature are key variables. Crush size and pH have less impact on copper extraction. For mid-grade ore, about 0.25 per cent copper, extraction is projected to reach 50 per cent after two years when heap leaching tertiary crushed ore at 60°C and pH 1.5. The heap leach operation would fit well with the proposed roast-leach operation used to treat higher grade ores. The latter could supply the low cost heat and acid needed in the heap leach.

Mining has always been, and still is, an activity which is vital for the development of mankind. This is because a predominant proportion of industrial products and energy is produced from raw materials that are excavated using mining methods. The need for environmental protection and the close proximity of urban settlements and mines in Slovenia have necessitated ever stricter requirements for the excavation of raw materials and the introduction of more environmentally-friendly mining methods. This is achieved by implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of raw material excavation within the scope of mining methods. In surface mines, this means prompt reclamation of the degraded surfaces, and in underground mines the use of methods with minimized impact on the surface and on underground water. In underground mines, mining methods with backfilling installed according to the multi-barrier disposal system are the only ones that allow the possibility of implementing a closed eco-techno-logical cycle of excavating raw materials. Various industrial waste materials are also included in the backfilling material in order to improve its strength properties. Backfilling consisting of several different waste materials is produced in the form of a composite. Before backfilling consisting of waste material composites can even begin to be used in mines, an environmental impact assessment of its suitability for mines needs to be made. In order to make such an assessment, a pressure leaching cell and an open diffusion cell were made, i.e. a pressure leachate test and a sorption test were developed. The two cells and the developed tests will enable the study of the influence of backfilling on the environment if installed in an underground mine. The pressure leachate test performed with the use of the pressure leaching cell simulates leaching from a consolidated backfill during the seeping of underground water into the backfilling material under pressure. The sorption test performed in an open diffusion cell simulates the flow of eluate leached from the backfilling material through the rock/geotechnical barrier. The two tests were developed in such a manner that they are performed either in succession immediately after one another, but they can also be performed separately at a certain time interval. The paper presents an assessment of the suitability of backfilling made of different waste material composites. The Palabora Mining Company has successfully extended the life of its operation by developing a 30,000tpd block cave underground mine below the now closed open pit. The process of transitioning from surface to underground mining has been technically, operationally and managerially challenging. This has been due to a number of factors; in particular, the development of a block cave in a very competent rock mass. The competence of the rock mass is clearly demonstrated in the open pit that preceded the block cave, one of the steepest deep open pit excavations in the world. With cave breakthrough, however, the pit was ?instantaneously? deepened by 400m causing a major failure of the northwest wall involving close to 100Mt of waste material.

Mine water in the Upper Olifants River Catchment in Mpumalanga(upstream of Loskop Dam) is at times discharged into local streams, resulting in local acidification and regional salination of surface water resources. Pollution of surface water can be prevented by collecting and treating mine water to a quality where it could be re-used without restriction (Cleanwater 2020 Initiative). Mine water in the Olifants River Catchment currently amounts to only 4,6% of the total water usage, but contributes 78,4% of the sulphate load. Limestone and lime treatment is the most cost-effective technology for neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acidic/sulphate-rich water to sulphate levels of less than 1500 mg/l due to precipitation of magnesium and removal of the associated sulphate fraction (through gypsum crystallization). Neutralized mine water of this quality may be suitable for irrigation. A number of alternative desalination treatment technologies were investigated (subsequent to gypsum crystallization pre-treatment) where treated mine water must meet more stringent quality requirements (e.g. less than 200 mg/lSO4). The capital cost of these processes varied between R4 million/(Ml/d) and R10million/(Ml/d) and the running cost between R2/m3and R5/m3. Water usage in the Upper Olifants River Catchment currently amounts to 947 Ml/d (including the power stations), and will increase to an estimated 1385 Ml/d by 2020. The additional water demand by2020 (438 Ml/d) will have to be supplied by importation from neighbouring catchments, and more efficient utilization of the local water resources, including excess mine water. Various levels of treatment are required to make mine water suitable for the following potential applications (acceptable treated water sulphate concentration shown in brackets): irrigation (2000 mg/l), coal processing plant (1000 mg/l), general industrial use (500 mg/l), discharge to public streams (500 mg/l), potable use (200 mg/l) and cooling water in power stations (20 to 40 mg/l). The following two options, or a combination thereof, can be considered for management of excess mine water in the Upper Olifants River Catchment: ?Collection and treatment of excess mine water to a quality suitable for selected urban and industrial applications (Option A) ?Collection and treatment of mine water to a quality suitable for irrigation (Option B). The estimated capital and running cost for Option A amounts to R528.5 million and R55.7 million/year, respectively, compared with R68,2 million and R11,9 million/year for Option B. It is recommended that Option B be investigated for implementation in the short to medium-term. Option B was selected due to cost benefits and the initial favourable results obtained by a joint Water Research Commission and Coal Industry initiative where mine water is used for irrigation. Option A may become feasible in the long-term to ensure maximum environ-mental protection and reduced treatment cost as a result of anticipated technological improvements over the next 5 to 10 years.

The introduction of extra low profile (XLP) mechanized equipment within Anglo Platinum is aligned with the overall New Mining Technologies strategy to focus on continuing modernization of our mining operations` incorporating injury-free production and cost-effective mining technologies. The method allows for the introduction of a suite of ultra-low profile equipment in narrow reef (1.2 m) stoping operations. For the first time it is now possible to achieve total trackless mechanization at these widths and indications are that XLP mining has the potential to add more value when benchmarked with conventional mining and low profile (1.8 m) room and pillar methods. Various mine layouts were tested at different sites within Anglo Platinum and the XLP breast mining layout proved to be the most effective. This paper describes the results of the trials at Waterval Shaft and concludes with recommendations on our future strategy on implementation of XLP technology within Anglo Platinum.

This article is a continuation of a series of publications by the authors on the international debate on resource nationalism, with specific reference to South Africa. Previous outcomes have shown that mine nationalization is not a solution for South Africa, and that maintaining stability of the current mineral and tax regimes is fundamental. It will not be wise to replace existing law and policy instruments until there is a better understanding of the distinction between fact and public perception about the impact of the current system. The new scheme of state custodianship linked to a mining royalty that effectively targets economic rents provides for effective resource use. The methodology in this article is to consider how South Africa's mineral tax regime can be tweaked to achieve optimal management and benefit from mineral extraction and associated rents by avoiding changes feared by investors. The major finding is that the current suite of instruments can be considered a suitable platform for optimal management of resource rents. However, it will be necessary to first investigate ways of improving the mineral beneficiation intent of the royalty structure, and secondly investigate whether the mineral rent portion of the royalty formula can be ring-fenced for the purpose of establishing a sovereign wealth fund.

In his 1978 monograph ‘Lognormal-de Wijsian Geostatistics for Ore Evaluation’, Professor Danie Krige emphasized the scale-independence of gold and uranium determinations in the Witwatersrand goldfields. It was later established in nonlinear process theory that the original model of de Wijs used by Krige was the earliest example of a multifractal generated by a multiplicative cascade process. Its end product is an assemblage of chemical element concentration values for blocks that are both lognormally distributed and spatially correlated. Variants of de Wijsian geostatistics had already been used by Professor Georges Matheron to explain Krige’s original formula for the relationship between the block variances as well as permanence of frequency distributions for element concentration in blocks of different sizes. Further extensions of this basic approach are concerned with modelling the three-parameter lognormal distribution, the ‘sampling error’, as well as the ‘nugget effect’ and ‘range’ in variogram modelling. This paper is mainly a review of recent multifractal theory, which throws new light on the original findings by Professor Krige on self-similarity of gold and uranium patterns at different scales for blocks of ore by (a) generalizing the original model of de Wijs to account for random cuts; (b) using an accelerated dispersion model to explain the appearance of a third parameter in the lognormal distribution of Witwatersrand gold determinations; and (c) considering that Krige’s sampling error is caused by shape differences between single ore sections and reef areas.

The research described in the paper was aimed at providing standardized information of cases of failed and intact coal pillars in the form of databases to researchers. It also offered the opportunity to take stock of the pillar stability situation in coalmining and to review the impact of the application of the safety factor formula for pillar design. It was found that the physical parameters of coalmining have not changed substantially over the last four decades. However, changes in the controllable parameters like pillar width, pillar width-to-height ratio and percentage extraction have all moved toward the more conservative side. Scrutiny of the database indicates that of all the failures recorded, only 23 occurred in panels that were mined after 1969, when one can assume that the safety factor formula was fully applied. If the pre-1969 practices had been continued, at least 144 collapses would have been expected. There has thus been a substantial reduction of pillar collapse cases, justifying the cost paid for the formula, which has shown to be in the region of 600 million tons of coal. It is evident that that are distinct differences in the natures of the failures among different coalfields. This justifies the attempts to derive seam or coal field specific strength formulae and is a topic that should be pursued.

Engineers and researchers need to estimate the mechanical properties of rocks from P-wave velocity. In previous studies, the researchers have investigated either the limited values or all the data belonging to sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks together in the same statistical analysis. In this study, the raw data pertaining to only sedimentary rocks was taken from previous studies and evaluated. For this purpose, a total of 97 samples of sedimentary rock types were subjected to statistical analysis. First, the relationships between P-wave velocity and physical-mechanical properties were investigated by simple regression analysis. All the data were then subjected to multi-regression analysis. Some empirical equations with high correlation coefficients were derived for rock engineers. The equations obtained from the analyses are compared with previous equations found in literature.

Keywords: co-generation, furnace CO-gas cleaning, disintegrator scrubber, Theisen In a closed, electric, reduction furnace, no oxygen enters the furnace from the surrounding environment. The off-gases are thus not ?burnt? and therefore contain a considerable amount of CO and H2. Traditionally these gases have been captured and burnt in a flare stack. Recent developments have led operators of such furnaces to revise this strategy and to consider utilising these gases as a fuel for gas-fired generator sets to produce electricity, thus becoming more energy efficient. On 31 March 2010 the new emission standards, in accordance with the Air Quality Act, Act 39 of 2004, were promulgated. The minimum emission standards according to the act require that the particulate matter emissions from the primary fume-capture systems on closed furnaces for ?new plants? in ferroalloy and calcium carbide production not exceed 50 mg/Nm³ and 25 mg/Nm³, respectively. By implementing co-generation, the producer automatically complies with the new environmental emission standards for an off-gas. As much as 30% of the electrical power cost, which is set to double in the near future, can be saved by partly generating one?s own electrical power. In December 2010, the National Treasury published a discussion paper for public comment, one entitled ?Reducing greenhouse gas emissions: The carbon tax option?. Irrespective of how the tax is finally implemented, it will result in an increase of production costs in affected industries. This paper focuses on the characteristics of a furnace-off-gas cleaning system for closed ferroalloy smelters, characteristics that meet the requirements of both reducing solid-matter emissions and operating a safe and reliable gas plant.

Ferroalloy production is an energy-intensive industrial sector with significant CO2 emissions. In this paper the current situation in ferroalloy processes is discussed from the standpoint of global environmental issues, trends and development. Progress and data of ferroalloys production are frequently compared with the steel industry, which is a closely related sector and the main user of ferroalloys. Emission factors of processes and electricity production are examined as well as possibilities and future scenarios of how to diminish CO2 emissions. As a part of this study a questionnaire was submitted to experts in the field of ferroalloys worldwide to survey opinions on the ferroalloy industry today and in the near future (2020). Eighteen questions concerning raw materials, energy, environmental aspects, by-products and economic aspects were responded to by seventeen experts, the answers were analysed and conclusions were drawn. "Direct cobalt electrowinning was developed to produce unrefined cobalt metal as an alternative to producing a mixed hydroxide product (MHP), which is the common cobalt intermediate product in African Copperbelt operations. MHP is preferred due to the high cost of producing high-grade cobalt cathode. Direct cobalt electrowinning test work results have shown that the purity of the unrefined cobalt metal produced from a low-grade copper solvent-extraction raffinate stream was ~97% (w/w), which is significantly higher than the MHP purity (up to 45% (w/w) Co). The current study investigates whether direct cobalt electrowinning would increase the profitability of African Copperbelt copper–cobalt oxide operations, when compared with the MHP flowsheet. An order-of-magnitude economic evaluation was conducted using dynamic differential discounted cash flow models on a “bare-bones” basis, using a 10% discount rate. Three variables were evaluated, namely; reagent utilisation extents, precipitation extents and filter-press wash efficiency. Multivariable risk analysis was also conducted using the Monte Carlo simulation technique to understand the impact of key project drivers. The financial study results indicated that a direct cobalt electrowinning flowsheet could potentially result in a higher mean net present value (NPV) compared with the MHP flowsheet. Cobalt recovery was found to have the most significant impact on the NPV. In addition to increased profitability of African Copperbelt operations, direct cobalt electrowinning has the potential to reduce the environmental footprint of operations as well as addressing the Democratic Republic of Congo government’s drive towards export of higher value metal products instead of low-grade intermediates."

Roadheaders are very versatile excavation machines used in tunnelling, mine development, and mine production for soft to medium strength rock formations. Performance prediction is an important factor for successful roadheader application and generally deals with machine selection, production rate and bit consumption. Among many different parameters, brittleness is also one of the material properties related to breakage characteristics and can be used as a cuttability parameter from a mechanical excavation point of view. The main objective of the research study is to contribute the brittleness of rock excavated to construct a new empirical equation for predicting the performance of roadheaders in different material and operational conditions. In this regard, a new performance prediction model for medium duty roadheaders based on a brittleness index (BI) is presented. In this study, rock mass brittleness index (RMBI) is defined in order to investigate the influence of BI on roadheader performance. RMBI is an index which can be used to relate the intact and rock mass characteristics to machine performance. Results demonstrated that RMBI is highly correlated to instantaneous cutting rate (ICR) (R²=0.94). Moreover, through the further analysis and normalization, the pick consumption index (PCI) was introduced as a parameter having a good relation with pick or bit consumption rates (PCR) (R²=0.79). Finally, the new predictive models for ICR and PCR showed very good correlations with the actual measured values. Since then, the smelter complex has undergone considerable changes. Mineral economics, UG2 exploitation, and changing environmental legislation have enforced numerous process upgrades, yet a common-sense approach has always been adopted. This document details the major changes in the smelter complex at Mineral Processes (Minpro) over the past 15 years, and provides the rationale for the changes.

A number of impending and actual pit wall failures have been observed and documented which have been interpreted to initiate on newly generated structural features. This infers failure through intact rock. Failure mechanisms have been postulated resulting from circumferential stress, extensional strain and brittle flexure. These will be discussed in the context of the failures and the associated monitoring. The implications of failure initiating on ?unknown? features has a significant impact for deep open pit mines where designs are based on the expected structural regime. Being able to anticipate such failures is important for design. Equally important is management of such changes as they arise. In this context, monitoring using high resolution microseismic techniques will be discussed as a means of providing early warning of such failures.
