Improve the safety of roof bolting machine operators working in underground coal mines while maintaining or improving efficiency of the roof bolting operation. Approach The Bureau of Mines funded research under contact to develop equipment that would assure greater safety in drilling holes and installing roof bolts. The research led to the design and fabrication of a roof-boiling machine that allows its operator to per-form drilling and bolting tasks while under permanently sup-ported roof or canopy protection. How the Prototype Works The major components of the remote-control roof bolter are a flexible-shaft drill that provides continuous drilling capability without the need to Stop to add drill extensions for long holes; a roof-bolt inserter that can bend a longer-than-seam height roof bolt into the drilled hole; and a roof-bolt lifter/torquer that completes insertion of the roof bolt into the hole and torques it to the desired tension.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a simple stereographic method of analyzing the orientation of single and intersecting planes of weakness in vertical pillars of parallel symmetry. From this method, it can be determined if planes of weakness transect the full horizontal cross section of a pillar. A major finding resulting from this method was that intersecting planes of weakness can transect the full horizontal cross section of a pillar even though the individual planes do not. This paper provides step-by-step instructions for using this method.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to determine if ultrasonic energy could reduce either the residual water or oil content of petroleum reservoir-rock samples from Appalachian area oilfields. Brine-saturated core samples were flooded with oil to residual brine saturation and subjected to 20 kilocycles per second ultrasonic energy. Then they were flooded with brine to residual oil saturation and again subjected to ultrasonic energy. Additional water displaced as a result of the application of ultrasonic energy to the flow system ranged from 0 to 4.3 percent of the original brine and averaged 1.9 percent. The increase in oil recovery as a result of the ultrasonic energy ranged from 0 to 9.0 percent of the original oil and averaged 3.1 percent. On the basis of the tests, it appears that 20-kcps acoustic waves would not have field application for oil recovery.

This report describes sampling and analytical procedures used for measurement of sulfates in diesel tailpipes and in the diluted exhaust within dilution tunnels. A variety of methods exist for sulfate analysis for such systems, including ion exchange. Two chemical methods used by the Bureau of Mines are described in detail. These are based upon spectrophotometric measurement of chloranilic acid using barium chloranilate. The procedures are rapid and relatively inexpensive. In general, ion exchange is preferred by many analysts for sulfate analysis. However, it is more complex and expensive than chloranilic acid procedures, which are adequate for exhaust analysis.

Geological differences among various coalfields restrain the applicability of subsidence prediction using empirical approaches previously developed. The Bureau of Mines assessed data collected from 16 longwall panels in the Northern Appalachian basin. Attention was focused on the effects of rock lithology, excavation width, and panel depth on the subsidence factor. The results show that the subsidence factor can be expressed in terms of the width-to-depth ratio by a simple exponential equation, which has a coefficient tentatively considered as the subsidence index. This index varies with the lithology of a particular site, and can be expressed in terms of percent distribution of weak and strong rocks in the overburden.

Medium-frequency (MF) techniques have been successfully .[pplied] to the problem of radio voice communications in both coal and metal and nonmental mines. Long range is achieved by taking advantage of existing mine conductors that carry and propagate the signal over vast areas. It is very likely that in the near future such systems will become the referred method for general mine communications. MF techniques can also be applied to the areas of in-mine control and monitoring. Preliminary work in this area is described. In a western mine, locomotives are being operated under MF remote control in a loading operation. In several eastern mines, MF has been evaluated as a method for monitoring the status of devices in remote areas of the mines. All control and monitor information uses existing mine conductors.

This Bureau of Mines report presents an iterative approximation method for microseismic source location that was developed to adapt microseismic techniques for rock structure analysis to investigations of surface problems, such as slope failure in an open pit mine. The source location method and two derivative location algorithms are described in detail, and the speed and accuracy of the two algorithms are compared.

Utilize innovative processing technology to prepare high-purity, ultrafine advanced ceramic powders with little or no contamination occurring during the milling process. Advanced ceramic materials made from these powders could substitute for high-temperature alloys containing critical materials such as chromium, cobalt, and nickel. Approach Modify and evaluate the Bureau's turbomill, developed earlier to grind a variety of ceramic raw materials (clay, mica, and talc), as a milling or size-reduction technique for hard and abrasive advanced ceramic powders, such as silicon carbide. Background Powders for producing ceramic materials, such as silicon carbide. silicon nitride, alumina, and zirconia, which arc being considered for use in severe applications requiring high-temperature and/or corrosion resistance, are very difficult to reduce to fine sizes for processing into finished parts. Traditional techniques of particle size reduction, such as ball milling and jet milling, are very energy intensive and/or slow. These traditional techniques often produce materials that have a nonuniform particle size distribution and are contaminated by the milling media or container.

Gold continued to dominate mineral production in the group of volcanic islands and atolls of Melanesia in the southern Pacific Ocean, which comprise the British Commonwealth nation of Fiji. The Fijian mineral sector, however, remained of minor importance in terms of export earnings, Government revenues, and employment to the economy of the country, which was primarily agrarian with sugar as its mainstay. The Vatukoula gold-silver mine on the north side of the main island of Viti Levu remained the largest and most important mining operation, as well as Fiji's only operating metalliferous mine. In October, Western Mining Corp. (Fiji) Ltd. (WMCF), a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian-registered Western Mining Corp. Holdings Ltd., increased its interest in the Vatukoula joint venture from 10% to 20% by exercising its option with Emperor Gold Mining Co. Ltd., also of Australia. The assumption of mine management operations at Vatukoula in 1983, with its attendant influx of additional capital and technological expertise, enabled WMCF to increase both efficiency and output at the mine during 1984. Higher output was obtained owing to an increase in underground ore production, which was partly offset by a reduction in opencut tonnage, as well as to modifications in the recovery circuit. Rate of recovery increased from about 15% to over 82% of the gold contained in the ore and from about 40% to 45% of the contained silver.

To have the capability to predict the development of localized spontaneous heating within a porous coalbed that is subjected to forced air ventilation or in an otherwise quiescent environment in which buoyancy develops, the Bureau of Mines developed three time-dependent mathematical models, which were used to calculate the temperature increase associated with chemisorption of oxygen by the coal. In each model, spontaneous heating is driven by an Arrhenius first-order reaction between the oxygen and coal. Two models are two-dimensional, and one is one-dimensional. In the first two-dimensional model, a constant-velocity forced convection airflow is specified; and in the other, buoyant flow is allowed to develop in the absence of forced convection. The third model evaluates the airflow from Darcy's law and a specification of the pressure at the surface of a one-dimensional porous coalbed. Numerical computations demonstrated how each model could be used to predict the onset of spontaneous heating when the porous coalbed was subjected to constraints of an imposed internal heat source or a high- temperature airflow. The effects of particle size and coalbed compaction upon spontaneous heating were examined with the third model.

The effects of certain process variables on the grain size, grain type, and microhardness of vapor-deposited tungsten were established, and the near-optimum parameters and the efficacy for the vapor deposition process were determined. No significant change in the grain size or microstructure resulted from ultrasonic vibration of the substrate during deposition, from variations in the hydrogen (H2) to tungsten hexafluoride (WF6) ratio, or from small increases in reaction-chamber pressure. Near-optimum conditions were continuous deposition at atmospheric pressure, a deposition rate of 2-mils thickness/square inch of substrate area/hour, a temperature of 5500 C, and a hydrogen to WF6 ratio of 4:1. The addition, individually, of about 2 volume-percent of butane, 24 volume-percent of carbon dioxide, or 4 volume-percent of propane to the hydrogen and WF6 mixture produced deposits with the finest grain size for each gas. A corresponding increase in microhardness accompanied the decrease in grain size. The addition of gases did not alter the columnar microstructure found in vapor-deposited tungsten.

Determine the extent to which remote-sensing techniques, primarily lineament analysis, can be used to identify geologic structures that may affect the location and migration of subsidence over abandoned underground coal mines in the Colorado Springs, CO, area. Compile data using a geographic information system (GIS) to allow efficient and reproducible comparisons and analyses. Background The basis for evaluating abandoned mine land (AML) sites with remote-sensing techniques comes from past and ongoing Bureau ground control research using remote-sensing data to identify potential hazards caused by geologic structures (faults, joints, etc.) above active underground coal mines. Research showed that lineament (linear feature) analysis of Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) images could indicate locations of fractures and fracture trends that had varying, but significant, impacts on the stability of mine openings. Such geologic structures should be identifiable over abandoned mines as well. If fractures are present, even if they arc not faults, they should represent areas of potential instability over these mines and, therefore, should tend to localize subsidence when it occurs, particularly for deep and moderately deep portions of mines.

The performance of Ecuador's mineral industry continued to be affected not only by depressed oil prices in recent years but also by natural disasters. In March 1987, Ecuador canceled foreign debt payments for the rest of the year and appealed for international aid because of a series of earth-quakes that destroyed villages and crippled the nation's oil industry. The earthquake destroyed a key section of the country's main oil pipeline and forced a halt to production and shipment of Ecuador's most important export product. Ecuador produces 240,000 barrels of oil per day and exports 144,000 barrels daily. Oil accounts for 60% of the nation's hard currency earnings. The Government of Ecuador asked the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and other oil-producing countries to assume Ecuador's oil sales commitments. Ecuador agreed to pay the countries back in an equivalent amount of oil when it was able to resume exports.

Roof bolting is a slow, expensive, and absolutely necessary mining activity. Roof-bolting activities also account for the largest percentage of lost-time injuries in underground coal mines. Dull bits result in the application of excessive force, which bends drill steel; and changing starter and finisher steel was the most significant source of injuries associated with roof bolting. The tungsten carbide (WC) roof-bolt drill bits currently used in American, Canadian, and Australian coal mines are capable of drilling only one or two 4-ft holes and then they are resharpened once or twice to drill another one or two holes. Often, in medium-hard rock formations (sandstone), as many as 20 to 30 bits may be required to drill a single 4-ft hole. Objective To compare the performance, longevity, and cost of newly developed polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) roof-bolt drill bits against WC bits. Research and Background Diamonds for industrial use have been scarce throughout history and continuous attempts have been made to produce synthetic diamonds. The first synthetic diamonds were manufactured in 1953. Economically produced synthetic diamonds are 1 to 10 µm in size, but in this size range, they are totally unsuitable for industrial applications. In 1972, General Electric Co. developed a process to sinter the artificially developed, minuscule diamond particles into usable products. In this process, several layers of diamond-particles-and cobalt mixture are overlaid on WC substrates and sintered at 2,350° F and 1,000,000 psi. The final product is known as PDC. Today, PDC's are available in many shapes, but their size is limited to 3/4 in, or less, in length or diameter, because pressures greater than 1,000,000 psi are required to manufacture larger PDC's. At present, diamond and PDC arc the hardest and strongest commercial materials available for wear surfaces. The PDC used in this study had a hardness 3.61 times greater than that of WC.

The impact of mining activities on the economy in both 1983 and 1984 was minimal. The most recent available data on the gross domestic product (GDP) indicated a level of $1.6 billion in 1983.2 The estimated value for the production of cement, aragonite, and salt was about $17 million in that year, down from the estimated $20 million in 1982. No data are available on the economic impact of the large petroleum refinery at Freeport on Grand Bahama Island, but it represents the major mineral-related activity. Cement production remained at only a fraction of the 800,000 tons per year of plant capacity. The offshore search for hydrocarbons continued in 1984, and some companies were about to enter the third year of seismic and geological surveying around Andros and Grand Bahamas Islands. Getty Oil (Bahamas) Co. Inc.; Breoco Ltd., a subsidiary of REO Development Corp. of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Natomas Petroleum (Bahamas) Ltd. were the first companies to be awarded exploration licenses. These companies were committed to drilling at least one well before the end of the third exploration year. Other companies actively engaged in exploration included Exxon Corp., Atlantic Richfield Co. (ARCO), Chevron Oil Bahamas Ltd., and Esso Oil Bahamas Ltd. Geophysical Services Inc. (GSI) of Dallas, Texas, and Petroleum Services (Bahamas) Ltd. of Englewood, Colorado, ran another seismic survey line during 1984. This 1,533-mile line was in the Great Bahama Bank and Cay Sal Bank areas off the southeast Florida coast, and tied in with a 4,530-mile program GSI ran in 1981-82. These surveys were nonexclusive and publicly available through GSI.

The smoke problem means different things in different places . In the neighborhood of industrial plants , especially smelting plants and cement plants , the term " smoke " is applied to material discharged from these plants , consisting of a mixture of solid particles ( dust ) , fume which has condensed from vapors , and gases of various kinds that are produced in the operations . In the ordinary use of the word , however , " smoke" refers to the visible material which escapes from the burning of coal . White smoke usually owes its color to small drops of water which have condensed from the water vapor that it formed in the burning of coal . When smoke is black, the color is due to unconsumed particles of carbon and usually when the smoke problem is spoken of , it is this black smoke produced in the burning of coal that is referred to , Many inquiries in regard to smoke are addressed to the Bureau of Mines , and the following brief summary has been prepared as covering the usual questions . For references to the smoke problem in England , I am indebted to a recent interesting paper on this topic by David Brownlie .

A method for preparing gravimetric primary standards of helium in the parts per trillion range has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The standards are used to calibrate a specially modified mass spectrometer used in determining the abundance of helium-3 and helium-4 in geochemical samples and of helium-3 in isotopically purified helium-4. The desired gas standards are prepared in 5-kg metal cylinders filled to 1,800 psia. Relative errors of less than 1 pct have been attained in the parts per trillion range using a successive dilution technique.

In recent years the use of visual aids has expanded the? field of safety education. This is a modern adaptation of a method employed in ancient times, when simple paintings and drawings were the only means of recording current events. In its present application, visual aid employs sound and silent motion pictures, stripfilms, lantern slides, descriptive posters, and color. According to Roberts,3/ "Visual education is a method of imparting information which is based on the psychological principle that one has a better conception of the thing he sees than of the thing he reads about or hears discussed." Dent4/ further defines visual aid as "all the materials used to facilitate the understanding of' the written or spoken word."

Thirteen miners died as a result of 2 explosions in the Jim Walter Resources No. 5 mine near Brookwood AL in September 2001. Both explosions were ignited in intake air entries, and both were probably ignited by electrical equipment. With few exceptions, permissible equipment is not required in intake air entries of US underground coal mines Researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. studied the electrical equipment ignition sources for the Brookwood and other w disasters to develop recommendations for preventing similar disasters Adherence to National Electrical code® requirements for flexible cords installed in hazardous (classified) locations may have prevented the second massive Brookwood explosion. The 30 CFR Part 7 requirements for battery assemblies should be reevaluated, taking into consideration United Mine Workers of America recommendations and the Zone 1"increased safety" standard requirements for battery assemblies, Class 1 Division 2 or Zone 2 explosion protection techniques are recommended for intake air equipment so that they do not present a methane air ignition source under normal operation before mine power is shut down during emergencies Battery powered circuits intake air that are likely to remain energized during emergencies should be protected by more stringent protection techniques, to protect rescue/recovery personnel. It is the firm belief of the Bureau's engineers that the introduction of electrical mining machines has done much to increase safety in mining as a whole . There can be no doubt but that the substitution of machine mining together with permissible powder for the method of " shooting from the solid " has been the means of saving the lives of many shot- firers . Machine mining also leaves the roof in a better condition as lighter charges of powder are required to bring down the coal . Thus the danger from falls of roof are lessened . It is recognized that every effort should be made to prevent all accidents due to the use of electrical machinery but it is felt that any action tending to limit the use of such machinery would be a backward rather than a forward step in the safety measures laid out to decrease the hazards in coal mining .
