Before going directly to the analysis, it would be good to summar¬ize explosion-proof container approval methods. Both Magison (52) and Short (84) state that in general practice, the systems are certified for: 1. a rugged enclosure able to withstand an internal explosion but not allow explosively hot gases to escape, and 2. maximum surface temperature, with equipment operating inside, that will not ignite the surrounding atmosphere. Also, testing insures that any material in contact with the container surface will not be ignited by a hot spot. Associated with the first practice, the enclosures are inspected for: 1. a safe flange gap width, 2. a pressure increase during ignition, and 3. an hydrostatic pressure withstand level. The hydrostatic pressure level is almost always determined by a meas¬ured ignition-pressure test and is usually applied to prove the mechan¬ical design to some safety factor. Consequently, explosion-proof enclosure testing includes temper¬ature, permissible flame gap, and pressure. Specifications and prev¬ious research also can be similarly separated even though some interre¬lation exists between the flame gap size and internal enclosure pressure during an explosion. After a long series of laboratory and in-mine tests, a cost- effective, mineworthy, reduced-noise auger miner cutting head was de signed, fabricated, and field-tested by Wyle Laboratories under contract to the Bureau of Mines. Compared with standard auger cutting heads, the new heads reduced noise by 10 dBA at the jacksetter's position and by 6 dBA at the operator's position. This report contains detailed fabrication instructions, including engineering drawings, that show how a standard auger cutting head can be modified to produce a reduced-noise auger.

Round Mountain Gold (RMG) in central Nevada, reports that over a nine-year period and a million operating hours, its fleet of 150-ton and 190-ton haul trucks has averaged better than 93% availability, with some of the trucks approaching 70,000 operating hours. Repair costs have been far below industry averages. Mine operations manager Pete Kesl credits the high availability and low repair costs to a succession of Product Support Agreements between RMG and Caterpillar dealer Cashman Equipment. He adds that good equipment and a high level of trust and co­operation between all parties to these agreements have been essential to their success at Round Mountain.

The Technology Transfer Seminar on Mine Communications held on March 21-22, 1973, at the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center, Bruceton, Pa., presented information about recently developed equipment, instruments, and techniques for use in mine communications systems. All of the basic ideas presented in the fine seminar are operational in the Bureau of Mines Safety Research Mine in Bruceton.

"INTRODUCTION The producing iron-ore ranges in the Lake Superior district are the Marquette and Menominee in Michigan, the Gogebic in Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Cuyuna, Mesabi, and Vermilion in Minnesota. These ranges produce about 85 percent of the iron ore mined in the United States. The accident experience in connection with this production is better than that of the regions producing the remaining 15 percent. Production and shipments vary slightly from year to year owing to stockpiling underground ore during the winter, or nonshipping, season but closely approximate each other over a period of years. This information circular supplements, combines, and continues the data contained in Information Circulars 7321 3/ and 7410 4/, including statistics for 1946 and 1947.Whereas the title ""Accident Experience"" is used for uniformity and logical indexing throughout this report, ""injury"" will be used as a general term to apply to disabilities of all degrees.During the 8-year period 1940 to 1947, inclusive, 619,054,023 long tons of iron ore was shipped from the Lake Superior district. 5/ Michigan and Wisconsin shipped 117,828,939 tons, or 19.03 percent of the total, and employed approximately 9,260 men. Minnesota shipped 501,225,084 tons, or 80.97 percent of the total, and employed an approximate annual average of 12,260 men. The tons produced and shipped per man employed in Minnesota is much greater than in Michigan and Wisconsin, owing to the large open-cut production in Minnesota."

Longwall roof behavior is characterized by strata displacements in both the face-to-waste (horizontal) and roof-to-f1oor (vertical) direc-tions. The roof support structure provides resistance to this motion by translation of these displacements into vertical and horizontal support loading. Observations indicate that the shield reacts with both a vertical and horizontal force to uniaxial convergence (displacement). However, there are different magnitudes depending on whether the displacement is vertical or horizontal. This makes it possible to use supports as monitors of strata activity and loading. The Bureau of Mines examined this behavior using a linear elastic model of the support structure with two degrees of freedom. Vertical and horizontal load reactions were related to associated displacement actions of the strata. This was done by determining the stiffness of the shield under controlled vertical and horizontal displacement motions in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. This report provides example predictions of strata convergence and isolation of horizontal support loading due to vertical roof convergence using the linear elastic shield model. The report also examines efforts to determine strata behavior by direct measurement of support displacement.

The growing importance of halide metallurgy for preparing high-purity metals has stimulated research to extend halogenation reactions to the direct extraction of metals from low-grade sources. This Bureau of Mines investigation involves a pioneering study of chlorination reactions in the presence of a fluorine donor. Tin slags containing tantalum and columbium and a zircon concentrate containing a relatively high ratio of hafnium to zirconium were studied. Direct chlorination of these materials at 500° C. yields only a 5-percent conversion of tantalum and columbium or zirconium and hafnium to anhydrous chlorides. This investigation showed that small additions of calcium fluoride to the reaction increased the recovery of tantalum and columbium to 95 percent and the recovery of zirconium and hafnium to 27 percent. These results were achieved with ratios of calcium fluoride to mineral or slag of only 0.2. Silica, the major impurity in the materials studied, was found to be converted to silicon tetrafluoride during chlorination in direct proportion to the quantity calcium fluoride added to the charge. However, large additions of calcium fluoride decreased the volatility of the resulting halides of tantalum, zirconium, and hafnium. Smaller amounts of calcium fluoride also favored recovering minor metal constituents in the zircon concentrate (uranium, thorium, and rare earths).

A method of error analysis has been applied to the location technique of non-linear least squares iterative inversion in order to evaluate the resolving power of several seismic array configurations with various assumed earth models and errors and inaccuracies in arrival times. The results obtained demonstrate that lateral accuracies of location are improved significantly when the depth of the miner is known. Lateral location to within 100 feet appears achievable in many instances. If it is possible to refine earth models significantly beyond what has normally been assumed in this work by the use of on-site data, or if the mine is shallow (300 feet or less), accuracies of-about 30 feet or so may be attainable. Inaccuracies in earth models of about 5% are found to contribute much more heavily to these location inaccuracies than errors of a few milliseconds in picking arrival times; however, arrival time errors of 15-20 ms or above will dominate these model inaccuracies. The expected accuracy of location is found to fall off very rapidly as the miner moves outside the array. The strength of this effect depends markedly upon the geometry of the array configuration and can be reduced by careful design. Also, as the size of the array is increased, expected location errors within the array are not altered much, but continue to match the error associated with the smaller array over a larger area (assuming that all stations can still pick up the miner's signals). Better location accuracy, especially with respect to depth control is achievable in an earth where the velocity is depth-dependent (increasing with depth) than in one which is homogeneous. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has developed a flue gas desulfurization process as part of its goal of minimizing the undesirable environmental impacts associated with energy and mineral-processing plants. This process, known as the citrate process, involves absorption of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in a buffered solution of citric acid. The S02-loaded solution is regenerated by reaction of the S02 with hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to form elemental sulfur. As an adjunct to the citrate process, bench-scale research has shown that S02-loaded citrate or glycolate solutions can be regenerated by countercurrent contact with steam (stripping) in packed towers. Concentrated S02 is produced by condensing the steam from the stripper product. Thus, steam stripping provides strong S02 gas for liquefaction, sulfuric acid production, or reduction to elemental sulfur. Stripping steam requirements were determined for treatment of 0.25-, 0.50-3 1.0-, and 2.0-pct-S02 waste gases. Steam requirements decreased with increasing S02 concentration n the simulated waste gases. For example, 5 grams of steam per gram o S02 was required to remove 90 pct of the S02 from a simulated copper smelter gas (2.0 pct S02), while 30 grams of steam per gram of S02 was needed for 90 pct S02 removal from a simulated coal-fired powerplant gas (0.25 pct S02).

Examination of seismic records during the time interval of the Sago Mine disaster in 2006 revealed a small amplitude signal possibly associated with an event in the mine. More needs to be understood about the seismicity from mine explosions in order to properly interpret critical seismic information. A seismic monitoring system located at NIOSH’s Lake Lynn Experimental Mine has monitored experimental gas and dust based explosions and impact tests. The seismic signatures from these different events were analyzed using standard waveform analysis procedures. The magnitude of seismic energy during a gas and dust explosion was found to be more dependent on mine entry geometry and seal behavior rather than on the amount of explosive fuel present. The results suggest a large explosion that’s not restricted can generate potentially the same magnitude as a small explosion that is restricted.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the applicability of existing material models to solve practical geotechnical mining-related problems by solving a yielding pillar stability problem considering confining effects on strength. Numerical difficulties normally encountered with modeling strain softening behavior were eased with a simplified computational procedure using a quasi-elastic approach to account for residual strength after initial failure. Although in agreement with a confined-core pillar design method using actual mine conditions that include mine layout geometry, overburden geology, and rock properties of the deposit and surrounding structure, the results cannot be verified because measured field data are not available at this writing.

It is estimated that more than 1 trillion cubic feet of methane is contained within the coals of the Mary Lee group in Jefferson, eastern Tuscaloosa, and southern Walker Counties, Ala. Most of this methane will be encountered by mining. Coals of the Mary Lee group are presently being mined at depths exceeding 1,000 feet and will in the near future be mined at even greater depths, where the problem of methane gas affecting the mining operations will be acute. It is calculated that approximately 90 pct of the methane is at depths greater than 1,000 feet, and over half of the gas is contained within only 12 pct of the study area which is under more than 1,500 feet of over-burden. Degasification in advance of mining will increase mine safety, reduce ventilation expenditures, increase productivity, provide an additional energy source, and make it possible to mine parts of deep coalbeds that probably could not otherwise be mined.

Approach Fire hazards on large draglines were analyzed, then appropriate automatic fire sensing and suppression systems developed and in-mine tested. How It Works Five fire hazard areas identified for special attention are: electrical control room, high voltage transformer enclosures, circuit breaker rooms, collector ring/roller path area, and the automatic lubrication rooms. This investigation was made as part of a larger program to develop basically new methods for preparing yttrium metal in high-purity form. It was performed under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and the Federal Bureau of Mines. Laboratory-scale tests were made to devise methods for preparing high-purity, anhydrous yttrium trichloride, for reducing the yttrium trichloride with sodium or lithium, and for consolidating the resulting yttrium sponge into ingots.

If resin-grouted roof bolts are not installed correctly, mine roof reinforcement can be affected, and roof falls can result. A bolt installation variable that is readily controlled by the mine operator is annulus thickness. The objective of this U. S. Bureau of Mines investigation was to study the effect of annulus thickness variations on the integrity of 3/4-in-diam resin-grouted bolts. Forged-head test bolts, 2 and 1 ft long, were installed in concrete blocks that had been drilled with 1-, 1-1/8-, 1-1/4-, 1-3/8-, and 1-1/2-in-diam bits. Standard pull tests were performed; then the concrete was broken away from the bolts so that grout mix quality could be inspected. It was found that the optimum annulus thickness is 1/8-in (l-in-diam drill hole), and as annulus thickness increases from the optimum, there is a corresponding decrease in grout mix quality, effective grout ratio, and axial stiffness.

An evaluation was made of one of several improved underground communication systems sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The system evaluated was installed in a typical metal/non-metal room and pillar mine and utilized UHF repeaters connected to a unique distributed antenna and passive reflector system which provided mine-wide communications. A microprocessor controlled data collection system was assembled and installed for the evaluation. Data consisting principally of times and durations of messages and identities of the originating transceivers was collected between February and August of 1982 (6 mos.). Analysis of the data shows that the principal benefits are reduction in time required for unscheduled maintenance and repair, enhancement of safety, and better coordination of production activities. A cost benefit analysis shows a net benefit over cost, although it is also concluded that the capacity of the system is greater than can be justified by current activity in the mine.

Material properties affecting slope stability were measured in a large 50-year-old, partially consolidated rockdump located in an active open-pit mine. Field tests included single-ring infiltration and density. In addition, a nuclear depth-moisture gauge was used to measure water content in six stainless-steel-cased drill holes on the crest and an upper bench of the rock dump. Precipitation, evaporation, wind speed and direction, and temperature data were collected at a weather station installed on the dump’s crest. Laboratory tests included particle-size distribution, specific gravity, Atterberg limits, and water content. By measuring material properties of a rock dump presumed to be stable, the safety of miners working on or at the toe of old rock dumps constructed of similar material and located in a similar climate can be assessed.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in cooperation with mine operators, conducted a study of heat stress exposures among mine rescue workers in underground mines. Mine rescue workers face extreme heat loads as they enter hot and poorly ventilated environments, particularly when they are wearing breathing apparatuses. The burden of wearing a closed-circuit breathing apparatus (CCBA), the inability to drink fluids for extended periods of time, and the potential for ventilation disruptions and fires combine to increase the risk of heat illness during a response to an emergency. In this research, ambient environmental conditions and heat strain indicators were measured using conventional ventilation monitoring tools during mine rescue training exercises. Heat strain was measured with an ingestible temperature-sensing pill that measured core temperature continuously. In addition, a heart-rate monitoring chest strap was used to indicate physical strain resulting from physical activity and heat. Both core temperature and heart rate data were transmitted to a remote recorder worn by a rescuer and time-stamped. Team activities were also observed to determine the contribution of work rate to a person’s total heat load. The effectiveness of several engineering controls, such as cooling the air inhaled by rescuers through an apparatus, wearing cooling vests, and supplying water through the CCBA masks, were investigated. Administrative controls, such as limiting the duration of exposure and controlling the work rate through forced-rest regimens, were also evaluated. Results to date are discussed, and tools for evaluating team condition and estimating the length of time it would be safe for rescuers to work are proposed.

"The discovery of large deposits of polyhalite (K2S04.MgS04.2CaSO4.2H2O) in Texas has led to an investigation of possible industrial proecsses for the extraction of potash from this material. This mineral was first discovored in small quantities in the European potash deposits in or about the year 1800. Chemists fire thought it to be a form of calcium sulphate, but a more accurate analysis by Strohmiyer indicated the composition as given by the above formula.The decomposition of polytalite by aster is very slow and results in the formation of a layer of gypsum at the surface of the polyhalite which retarts the solution of the potaseium and magnesium sulphates. To obtain a substantial yield of K2S04 in solution it is necessary to use large amounts of water at room temperature, for he concentration of K2S04 is limited by the low solubility of syngonite (K2S04.CaS04.H2O) whereas at 100º C. several days boiling are necessary to obtain more than a 6 per cent K2S04 solution even when finely powdered polyhalite is employed.In 1854 H. Rose discovered that calcination, followed by leaching with water, resulted in a larger extraction of the potassium and magnesium sulphates, as compared with leaching without precalcination. During the course of a series of investigations concerning formation of oceanic salt deposits, Van't Hoff and his pupils obtained sufficient data to construct the equilibrium diagram for the system K+Mg+SO4--Ca++.H2O for 25° C. and for 83° C. These data are very well summarized. in the International Critical Tables' and by Boeke and Eitel. From a consideration of the diagrams for 83º C. one would conclude that an extraction of polyhalite with moderate amounts of water at 33º C. would result in a solution whose maximum concentration of K2So4 would be about 3.6 grams per 100 grams of water and of M2SO; about 4.0 grams per 100 grams of water, corresponding to equilibriumwith the solid phases: Polyhalite potassiam-calcium pentasulphate and anhydrite.The fact that it has been found possible to obtain as high as 11.4 grams of K2S04 per 100 grams of water (see table 6) and an equivalent amount of MgSo4 (8.1 grams per 100 grams of water was obtained corresponding to a ratio K2/Mg of 0.98; indicates that the formation of these complex salts is very slow. To be sure, this results was obtained at 100° C. instead of 83º C. However, the work of Anderson and Nestall 9 on the double salts of calcium and potassium sulphates at 100º C. indicates that the diagram at 100º C. C. would not be greatly different from that at 83º C. This slow rate of approach to equilibrium when combined with precalcination of,of polyhzli-,a is the 17,asis of some of the more p:olisinE methods of extracting potash from polyhalite."
