This report, the 25th in a series, lists analytical data of coal samples collected by the Bureau of Mines in connection with the purchase of several million tons of coal for various Government agencies during fiscal year 1975. Tipple samples were collected by Bureau of Mines engineers at tipples as coal was being loaded into railroad cars or trucks. Ultimate analyses are given for these coalbeds only. The delivered coal was sampled at destination in accordance with instructions furnished by the Bureau of Mines, and all samples were analyzed in the Bureau laboratory at Pittsburgh.

A kinetic investigation of copper cementation in a revolving drum was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to explore the effects of a porous copper deposit attached to the iron surface and a fluidized slurry of copper particles surrounding the iron precipitant. The rate of cementation was found to be significantly enhanced by the increased cathodic areas provided by a porous copper deposit or the presence of a fluidized bed of copper particles contacting the iron precipitant. The cementation rate was found to be retarded by increased ionic strength, low pH, and the presence of oxygen. The cementation reaction was first order with respect to precipitant surface area. Copper cementation on iron is visualized to occur by two basic mechanisms. Precipitation may occur through a series of shorted electrochemical cells, whereby cupric ion precipitates on a growing cathodic copper deposit, or, deposition may occur via a fluidized cathode of copper particles contacting the ion precipitant.

The rate of the heterogeneous reaction between high-purity uranium metal and uranium tetrafluoride in molten lithium fluoride was measured. The apparent heat of activation for the reaction is 16.91 kilocalories per mole of UF4. A surface-controlled mechanism is suggested in which UF4 is adsorbed on the uranium metal surface. Additional UF4 reacts with the adsorbed species and the metal site to form an activated complex that decomposes to the product UF3. The reaction is an important source of metal loss in the electrowinning of uranium metal.

Establish a procedure for reliably determining cation exchange parameters at an in situ mining site. The Problem Predicting the movement rates of pollutants from waste disposal sites requires reliable measurements of cation exchange parameters since cation exchange can retard pollutant movement. Reliable measurements of these parameters are also required for predicting the length of time needed to restore groundwater quality after in situ mining. Cation exchange is otten the controlling mechanism for the replacement of leach solution cations by the cations in the returning ground-water. Unfortunately, laboratory measurements using core samples are of minimal reliability. The uneven clay distribution at most sites produces a high variability in laboratory results. In addition the flow pattern in the laboratory tests is different from that in the field. Approach Bureau of Mines research has developed a field-test procedure that is quick and yields reliable and representative data. A corresponding data analysis procedure was also established in order to verify the' applicability of the computer simulation model of cation exchange used in the analysis, and of the general analysis procedure, with actual field data.

A fifth successive record in fuel efficiency was established by the petroleum-refining industry in 1937, when the average heat requirement per barrel of crude oil run to stills was 554,000 3. t. u. compared with 597,000 3. t. u. in 1936. These amounts represent roughly the heat ob¬tainable from a tenth of a barrel of fuel oil (see fig. 1). Innumerable factors can influence heat consumption at rep aeries, but only a few are important enough to be subject to statistical measurement. Foremost of these is the ratio of runs to capacity, it being generally recognized that because the fuel demands for other than stills are comparatively inelastic, total heat requirements do not increase in direct proportion to crude runs. Thus, in 1937, crude runs of 1,183,440,000 barrels wore 11 percent higher than in 1930; the average operating ratio was 93 percent compared with 79 percent in 1936; but the total heat requirement increased only 4 percent, or from 639,149 billion 3. t. u. in 1936 to 663,966 billion 3. t. u. in 1937.

8. Refuge Chambers 8.1 Refuge Chambers - Technical Discussion 8.1.1 Introduction As a part of the overall escape system, refuge chambers can provide a last resort when existing escapeways are blocked. These chambers are intended to provide both protection from toxic gases and a life supporting environment for a period of time before external rescue or further escape efforts can be carried out Escapeways may be blocked physically (due to cave-ins, etc), by fire, or by the presence of a toxic or oxygen deficient atmosphere. In the first two cases, the trapped miners would most likely await external rescue efforts, and hence the design of the chamber will have to consider the time durations that such efforts may take, It is also possible, in the second case, for fire fighting and fire protective equipment to be stored in the chamber so that miners may attempt their own escape. In the third case, it should be recognized that a compact, beltmounted 1-hour self-contained breathing apparatus has been developed(9), and that other, less compact equipment is available for up to 4 hours of self-contained breathing supply. If such equipment were stored in the chambers, then miners could escape by travelling from chamber to chamber, taking temporary refuge in each before proceeding to the next. 8.1.2 Background The concept of "barricading" has long been recommended for those emergencies where miners are trapped inby a fire. Barricading, which is the construction of a makeshift shelter in a crosscut or deadend, protects the entrapped miners from toxic gases and enables them to conserve a supply of air. In this manner, they can survive two or three days--hopefully enough time for them to be reached by rescue teams. In the past, many lives have been saved with this technique.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch-and small-scale continuous flotation processing tests on waste granite fines from Georgia, to determine the feasibility of recovering usable feldspar and quartz products by flotation. Two flotation methods were utilized for the removal of biotite and other iron-bearing minerals: One was in an acid-cationic circuit, and the other in an alkaline-anionic-cationic circuit. Feldspar was recovered using an acid-cationic method. To produce commercial-grade feldspar and quartz products it was necessary to employ either two sequential froth flotation circuits or one froth flotation circuit supplemented by wet-magnetic separation techniques to remove iron contaminants. Continuous flotation processing yielded a commercial-grade feldspar concentrate containing, in percent, 3.8 Na20, 5.4 K20, and 1.10 CaO, with recoveries of 77.8, 70.3, and 64.4, respectively. The feldspar tailing was high-quality glass sand containing 98.2 percent SiO2 and 0.024 percent Fe2O3. About 42 percent of the quartz was recovered at glass sand specifications. An effective separation of, potash feldspar from the bulk feldspar concentrate was achieved by batch flotation in a mineral separation cell.

A thick-wall cylinder solution applicable to the evaluation of anisotropic elastic parameters is derived for the interpretation of stress relief data. For a restricted class of problems, a special relationship among certain orthotropic moduli yields stress distributions for the plane orthotropic problem that are identical to the corresponding isotropic case. A ring or hollow cylinder with these specialized anisotropic properties subjected to uniform radial loads is one of the problems in this class. Consequently, known stress solutions are used to develop the strains and displacements for a specialized orthotropic thick-wall cylinder under uniform pressures. The results are consistent with anisotropic equations used in the evaluation of in situ rock stresses.

Use water-jet-assisted cut-ting technology to reduce the exposure of mi ne workers' to respirable dust. Approach Install water-jet-assist on mining machines and evaluate its impact on respirable dust. How It Works Water-jet-assisted cutting involves a mechanical cutting bit working in combination with a moderate pressure (generally up to 10,000 psi) water jet directed just in front of, or through, the bit tip. One of its advantages is reduced dust generation because the jet wets the face of the material being cut more efficiently than a conventional low-pressure water spray, thus capturing much of the dust before it ever becomes airborne. It also removes loose cuttings ahead of the bit before they are pulverized by the bit into respirable dust. Total water consumption is about the same as for conventional low pressure dust control water spray systems. However, there is some increase in power consumption because of the energy needed to provide the high pressure water.

"The carnotite ores of Colorado and Utah were the chief source of radium for many years. In the fall of 1922; news of the very rich deposits of radium ore discovered in the Belgian Congo caused almost complete cessation of domestic production. The Congo ore contains pitchblend and a number of alteration products, including the new minerals bequerelite, curite, kasolite, stasite, and dewindite. Reports indicate that a considerable amount of ore containing over 50 per cent U308 has been produced. It seemed certain that radium could be extracted from the Congo ore at a much lower cost than from the relatively low-grade carnotite; and in order to preserve their elaborate marketing organizations, the larger American producers made agreements with the Belgium syndicate to market the foreign product in this country. The price of radium has been held at $70 per milligram. Extraction of radium from carnotite by the usual methods does not appear to be profitable at that price. With one exception, all American firms ceased production after their accumulated stocks of ore had been treated. The United States Radium Co., which continued to treat carnotite for several years, has recently shut down its plant.Although there is probably a large profit derivable from the treatment of Congo ore, it is not likely that the Belgium Syndicate will meet sufficient competition to cause any reduction in the present quotations. It is not known how long the high-grade ore will last, but when exhausted the price of radium may be expected to advance. According to K. L. Kithil3 it is the opinion of interested parties that, so far as can be forseen, radium will in future years never again be obtained at the present low price.Carnotite contains the valuable element, vanadium, which is not present in the Congo ore. The recovery of-vanadium is an important factor in the cost of extracting radium from carnotite, and under favorable conditions carnotite can be profitably treated for the vanadium alone. Vanadifecous sandstones are found ranging all the way from roscoelite (vanadium mica), containing little or no uranium; to a high-uranium and low-vanadium carnotite. Ores containing 2 per cent or more U308 are classed as radium ore and are sold on the basis of the uranium content, which is proportional to the radium content. Only in exceptional cases have ores been evaluated on the basis of both the radium and vanadium contents, although the presence of vanadium has undoubtedly influenced the price of radium ore."

One of the refining processes to which lubricating oils are frequently subjected effects a reduction in content of paraffin wax. The actual treatment usually involves chilling and filter pressing; the most important result accomplished from a commercial point of view is lowering of the ""cold test"" of the oil. The Bureau of Mines has recently had occasion to ascertain the effect of changes in paraffin wax content upon the viscosity of oil and has conducted a series of experiments described in the present report.Object of the present investigation:The Bureau of Mines has devised and is using a method for the analysis of crude petroleum* which includes determination of the viscosities of lubricating oil distillates. The Bureau method does not provide for preliminary removal of paraffin wax, and it has seemed advisable to determine whether this omission causes any important variation from the results that would be obtained through commercial refinery processing. It was also thought that the present tests, though limited in scope, might be of some practical value in indicating the general effect of paraffin content upon one of the most important properties of lubricating oil.Experimental procedureA five-gallon sample of Pennsylvania crude petroleum was distilled at atmospheric pressure until 50 per cent of the charge had been vaporized. Two liters of the residuum was distilled at a reduced pressure of 40 mm. (absolute) and cuts were separated that came over between the temperature limits of 250° to 275° C. (462° to 527° F.) and 275° to 300° C. (527° to 572° F.). The viscosities of these fractions were determined and they were subsequently subjected to treatment that removed successive percentages of paraffin wax. Viscosity temperature curves were determined for the oil obtained after each removal of wax.

No detailed information has been published heretofore on the performance of small industrial-type anthracite stokers in building-heating service, apparently because of the difficulty of comparing the performance of one unit with that of another over an entire season's operation. Studies of competitive heating fuels have been similarly handicapped, and attempts to compare fuels are seldom technically sound in this investigation, the performance of a 60-in. Losch4 stoker burning rice-size anthracite in a standard commercial boiler was observed during a 4-month winter-spring season. It was used to heat two buildings at the Bureau of Mines' Anthracite Research Center at Schuylkill Haven, Pa., with the customary type of automatic pressure-range control. Attendance was limited to inspecting, fuel weighing, data recording, and ash removal. Results were computed daily and grouped by weekly periods to minimize daily irregularities. The same stoker-boiler unit had already been tested in a series of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) test code runs, with the stoker running continuously and with other conditions well stabilized A comparison of results from the code test and the building-heating tests provided information not available in the past for a single stoker unit, assisted in analyzing heat losses not computable in a cyclic operation, and established a basis for evaluating stoker performance in heating service.

The vapor pressures of liquid molybdenum and liquid zirconium were determined by the Langmuir free-evaporation method. An electron-beam furnace with a water-cooled copper crucible was used for melting. Temperature was measured with a two-color ratio pyrometer. The vapor-pressure data led to the following equations: [log p (atm) = 5.429 - 28,380 T for liquid molybdenum in the range 2,890° to 2,990° K, and log p (atm) = 6.521 - 30,940 T for liquid zirconium in the range 2,229° to 2,795° K.] Third-law evaluations of each data set gave mean heats of sublimation (298.15° K) of 157.6 ± 1.8 kcal/mole and 148.4 ± 2.4 kcal/mole for molybdenum and zirconium, respectively, where the uncertainties are two standard devia¬tions. Second-law standard heats of sublimation determined from sigma plots and tabulated enthalpies were 143.5 ± 2.7 kcal/mole and 149.2 ± 3.8 kcal/mole for molybdenum and zirconium, respectively. The better agreement in heats of sublimation for zirconium is attributed to the 566° K temperature range studied which permitted a more accurate definition of the vapor pressure curve than could be obtained from the 100° K span for molybdenum. This supposition was verified by making a sigma-prime plot which utilized solid vapor pressure data for molybdenum to extend the evaluation range by 800° K. This gave a standard heat of sublimation of 155.2 ± 1.6 kcal/mole which is in good agree¬ment with the third-law value. The plot also gave a standard entropy of sublimation (298.15° K) of 35.73 ± 0.48 eu.

"One of the most serious long term health problems associated with underground,mining is Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis (CWI'), more commonly known as Black Lung Disease. It occurs in some coal workers, normally after 15 or more years of exposure to coal mine dust, and leads to a variety of respiratory problems. Two types of pneumoconiosis are recognized simple CWP, which has been estimated to affect 6.9 percent of miners and is a condition that does not impair the miner's ability to work nor reduce life expectancy; and a more severe form of black lung (called progressive massive fibrosis) that occurs in about one percent of the cases and results in severe lung damage.Although the relationship between coal dust and CWP has long been recognized, detailed knowledge of the relationship is insufficient for setting up authoritative guidelines to reduce the health risks for those employed in dusty,underground environments. CWP is not only a health problem for workers that causes considerable distress, it is also a very expensive problem the total annual costs associated with CWP approach two billion dollars.As part of its efforts to combat CWP, the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1983 established a Generic Mineral Technology Center to carry out basic research into all aspects of respirable coal dust:— control of dust generation — the behavior of dust in the mine — characterization of dust particles interaction of dust and lung— the relationships among dust generation and mobility and the mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics,Penn State, West Virginia University, the University of Minnesota, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are involved in this research, which is administered from the Department of Mineral Engineering at Penn State.Our work is one of the seven projects to be conducted at Penn Slate. We are concerned particularly with the characterization of dust and its relationships with the mine environment, and our main goal is to establish standard procedures for describing and measuring these variables.Coal DustCoal dust is a very complex material that varies greatly in chemical and mineralogical properties. Moreover, it is not the only constituent of respirable dust in the mine. When a coal seam is mined, it is inevitable that rock particles other than coal are included in the material. This rock comes from the mine roof, the floor, and the partings and inclusions within the coal scams. Since the roof and floor strata, the partings and inclusions are often stronger than the coal, mining them frequently causes more dust than mining the coal itself. One of the objectives of our research is to find the relationships between a specific coal's characteristics before it is mined and the respirable dust characteristics after it is mined. We are particularly interested in the size distribution of particles, the chemical properties, and the mineralogical properties."

"To help evaluate the vibration patterns of an excised lung, a method is developed to determine which parts of the surface of an excised lung are responding to acoustic excitation via the trachea. Holographic interferometry, a very' sensitive technique ·that can measure movements of a few microns, is used to detect the lung surface movements.The intact lung and heart are excised from Long· Evans male rats weighing 250 gm. A tube is inserted into the trachea and connected via a funnel to a 3 inch cone speaker. The assembly is positioned in the holographic unit and excited at frequencies up to 10,000 Hz. The holographic unit contains an acousto-optic shutter used with a 0.5 watt Argon laser.The resulting reconstructed holograms contain interference fringes that are indicated of lung surface vibration.INTRODUCTIONA 1986 report by the U.S. National Committee on Biomechanics [1] describes diseases of the lung as a major national health problem. One of the recommendations of the report is for continued study of the mechanical properties of lung tissue. As an example, the report cites at least three areas that would benefit from a better understanding of the vibratory patterns or the lung."

The Belizean economy had an estimated annual growth of about 3.4% over that of 1986. Economic growth during the 2 previous years was slower and was characterized by a negative trade balance. The gross domestic product (GDP) was an estimated $200 millioni2 in current dollars. Limited natural resources and scarce finances continued to make the Government's task a difficult one. Belize and China signed an economic cooperation agreement in April under which the Chinese Government is to provide technical assistance, a cash grant of $60.000, and a long-term, interest-free loan of approximately $1.5 million. In May, it was reported that gold was discovered in a remote area of the Maya Mountains in western Belize. An estimated unassayed value of $400 million has been placed on the deposit by one of its discoverers. However, the government in Belmopan has played down the discovery. Two U.S. oil companies. Seahawk Oil International of California and Alston Oil Co. of Texas, were granted licenses to explore for oil. Seahawk Oil will explore a large area of the Orange and Corozal Districts, while Alston Oil will prospect a 90,000-acre area of the western Cayo District. Another U.S. oil company, Pecten Oil Co., recently completed seismic studies off-shore of Belize City. Pecten Oil has made plans to start drilling in 1988.

Science involves the study of the nature and behaviour of natural things and the knowledge we obtain about them. Scientific endeavour leads to the unfolding of new knowledge and adjustments to our understanding and our behavior. To indicate that we ‘know’ something may merely mean we do not feel able to, or that we do not wish to, disagree with others who claim to know; or it may mean we have either heard about it, or studied it, or understand part of it, or accept that it is true, or have seen evidence to be convinced of its veracity. What do we ‘know’ about the health effects of vibration? There are many unknowns in the field of human responses to vibration. Not all would agree on what is known and what is unknown. This paper seeks to summarize what we know that we know, what it is sometimes claimed that we know, and what we know that we do not know about the relation between exposures to vibration and our health. It also speculates on what we do not know that we do not know. Hand-transmitted vibration What we know we know We know that exposures to hand-transmitted vibration result in various disorders of the hand, including abnormal vascular and neurological function. Not all frequencies, or magnitudes, or durations, of hand-transmitted vibration cause the same effects. What we may claim to know To enable exposures to be reported and compared, they are ‘measured’ and ‘evaluated’ using defined (e.g. standardised) procedures. This involves identifying what is to be measured and specifying how it is expressed by one (or a few) numbers. Summarising a vibration exposure in a single value involves assuming the relative importance of components within the vibration (e.g. different magnitudes, frequencies, directions, and durations), so standards define ‘weightings’ for these variables. The importance of the weighted values may also be suggested, allowing ‘assessments’ according to a criterion (e.g. the probability of a specific severity of a specific disease). Standards for the measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration define a frequency weighting and time dependencies that allow the severity of vibration exposures to be assessed and the probability of finger blanching to be predicted 1. What we do not know We do not know that the frequency weighting in current standards reflects the relative importance of different frequencies and axes of vibration in producing any specific disorder. We do not know whether the energy-based daily time-dependency inherent in A(8) reflects the relative importance of vibration magnitude and daily exposure duration. Consequently, the relation between A(8) and the years of exposure to develop finger blanching, as in an appendix to ISO 5349-1 (2001), is not well-founded. We do not know, or at least there is no consensus on, the full extent of the disorders caused by hand-transmitted vibration (e.g. vascular, neurological, muscular, articular, central), or the pathogenesis of any specific disorder caused by hand-transmitted vibration, or the roles of other factors (e.g. ergonomic factors, environmental factors, or individual factors). A personal dust monitor (PDM) was developed to measure respirable coal mine dust mass to provide accurate exposure data at the end of a work shift. Additionally, the new monitor continuously displays near-real-time dust exposure data during the shift. The PDM uses a tapered-element oscillating microbalance to measure the mass of dust deposited on a filter and continually displays the cumulative exposure concentration data. The accuracy and precision of the instrument was determined by comparison to gravimetric filter samplers in the laboratory and in four mines. Laboratory results with different coal types and size distributions showed that there is a 95% confidence that the individual PDM measurements were within ±25% of the reference measurements. Mine test results indicate that data taken with adjacent PDM and reference samplers are indistinguishable. The technology proved durable enough to successfully measure 108 shifts of data out of 115 attempts in the mines. Under these specific test conditions, the PDM demonstrated that it was convenient to wear, robust, provided accurate data, provided timely data that could be used to prevent overexposure, and was easy to use.

This information circular is one of a series describing mining methods and costs, being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Sunbright mine of the Foote Mineral Co. at Sunbright, Va., is the southernmost underground limestone mine in the State. It is a comparatively recent operation, and a description of its rapid development to production stage may have particular interest for the limestone-mining industry. This report details the continuation of mine power systems transient research under USBM Grant G0155003. The purpose of the work, which commenced under Grant G0133077, is the elimination of safety hazards created by transients" and the objective is to provide knowledge about transients existing in a-c and d-c coal mine power systems. The report chapters cover theoretical background, instrumentation, and experimental investigations. The instrumentation discussion scans measurement problems and considerations plus the development of a low-cast peak-detector. Transient data from in-mine measurements are presented and include high-voltage distribution and d-c trolley systems. Extremely unique field exercises are described involving actual power equipment connected on the surface to duplicate typical underground coal mine system arrangements. Here, transients on high-voltage distribution resulting from vacuum circuit breaker operations could be observed under controlled conditions, and work centered around how surge capacitors effect transients. Using the in-mine and staged transient data, specific conclusions and recommendations are made with emphasis on high-voltage distribution.
