"It is well known that prevalence and severity of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP) differ markedly in different regions and mines despite comparable exposures. These variations in the pathogenicity of different coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by the mineral composition of the coal mine dust and the rank of coal. Laboratory studies also do not correlate with the human experience. One major difference between human exposure and laboratory studies is that the coal miner breathes dust from freshly broken coal, while the animals or cells are exposed to stale dust. In an effort to find biochemical clues for resolving this apparent paradox, we have carried experiments to detect differences in chemical reactivities of fresh versus stale coal dust from several U.S. coal mines. Electron spin resonance (ESR) was used as a technique for the direct detection of the concentration and reactivity of free radicals. ESR measurements of freshly ground coal dusts of different ranks and composition showed significant differences in the amount and reactivities of the organic free radicals produced. The half-lives and reactivity patterns of these newly formed species of free radicals seem to correlate with the expected toxicity and pathogenicity of the dust, thereby, providing new clues to the biochemical mechanisms and pathogenesis of CWP. Similar detection of free radicals in freshly crushed quartz suggest that free radicals might play a significant role in the pathogenicity of quartz in causing fibrosis and eventually silicosis.IntroductionThe pathogenesis of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) has been an important topic of concern for decades, but the mechanism of CWP is still not understood. "Diesel particulate matter (DPM) emitted from diesel engines is currently considered to be a health problem in underground mines. As a result, attempts have been made to control DPM both by reducing emission rates and by managing the DPM that gets into the mine atmosphere. This paper presents a method for modeling the generation, transfer, and distribution of DPM in coal mining sections through the use of a convection-based computer model so that controls for emitted DPM can be evaluated. A variety of ventilation strategies and diesel deployment schemes for room-and-pillar development sections were simulated to compare their effects on average DPM concentrations at several fixed and mobile personnel locations in the section. Input data for the model was gathered from actual diesel development sections and derived from experimental study results provided by other researchers. Analyzed using the model were ventilation schemes using vent tubing and brattice, exhaust location strategies on the vehicles, and the direction of ventilation at the feeder-breaker location. A summary of results from this study is presented.With diesel equipment holding an important place in underground coal mining and growing in use over time, it is important to develop and improve controls of the exhaust emissions, especially diesel particulate matter (DPM), to further reduce potential health hazards. The proper design and maintenance of diesel engines and on¬board control procedures are paramount requirements for controlling DPM successfully. There is also, however, a significant reduction potential in terms of personal exposure that can be realized by managing the DPM that gets into the airstream. Strategic design of the mining, ventilation, and equipment implementation systems remain essential for efficiently reducing the DPM concentrations.Modeling the effect of diesel exhaust contaminants upon the mine atmospheric quality will permit improved health and safety design of the overall mining and ventilation systems. Numerous studies have been performed to model the distribution/transport of gaseous and particulate emissions in the underground mine atmosphere and some very sophisticated convection/diffusion models have been developed (Skobunov, 1974; Thakur, 1974; Stefanko and Ramani, 1975; Wala, 1980; Bandopadhyay and Ramani, 1983). Most of these models were developed for a single airway or based on the assumption that the ventilation network of a mining section can be approximately represented by a single intake and a single return. The complexity of most models of the convection/diffusion type and the mobility aspect of diesel haulage units made a detailed emissions model very difficult to develop.The current model is an attempt to fill the need for a more generic tool applicable to mining sections employing multiple mobile diesel units by simplifying the convection-diffusion model to a convection-only model. The simplification is based on the fact that the diffusion coefficient will affect only the transient environmental contaminant concentrations with little or no affect on the time-weighted-average concentrations over a relatively long period such as a working shift (Lee et al., 1994). In view of the difficulties involved in mathematical modeling, the approach here is developing and using a computer simulation model. A PC-based FORTRAN 77 simulation model for the analysis of mining systems with multiple diesel sources and any ventilation network configuration was developed to study the distribution/transport of DPM in mine airways, evaluate methods of reducing DPM concentrations, and explore modifications to existing mining practice."

A high-Btu gas was made at the Bruceton, Pa., laboratories of the Bureau of Mines to demonstrate the feasibility of using the gas as a nonpolluting fuel for automobiles. The pilot plants at Bruceton were revised to combine the processes of coal gasification, gas purification, and catalytic methanation in one overall system. Tests in the Bureau's test automobiles at Bartlesville, Okla., showed the Synthane gas was less polluting than natural gas.

The Rickard mine in York County, S. C., named for the original owner, Alexander Rickard, was operated about 50 years as. No records are available of the quantity of corundum shipped. Pratt states, "Many tons were picked up from the surface and shipped." The mine was visited on August 6, 1943, by the author, accompanied by Gilbert W. Withers of Atlanta, Ga. Investigation of the property was begun by the Bureau of Mines after some initial work by the Mi-Cor Corp., a company organized by Gilbert P. Withers of Atlanta to explore the property. In conducting the Bureau program, 754 linear feet of trenches were dug, 110 feet of old drifts cleaned out and examined, and 38 feet of shaft retimbered.

"Arsenic has been recently quoted at 10 1/2 - 11 cents per pound, an increase over the prevailing price of last fall, when arsenic was cents, as against pre-war prices around 4 cents is evidently a sustained demand for this material. The following statements are intended to summarize briefly some particulars regarding arsenic.Commercial arsenic is the white arsenious oxide (As203). This is the form in which it is generally marketed, as the uses of arsenic demand its industrial application in this form. Arsenic as an element finds rather restricted use in the hardening of lead shot, ere it is to some extent replacing the use of antimony, while white arsenic is employed in a variety of manufacturing processes, chief of which is the manufacture of insecticides and sprays. The poisonous nature of most arsenic compounds, the commonly known ones being paris green and lead arsenate, and its relative cheapness, make arsenic a material suitable for this purpose. The stimulation of agriculture during the war greatly increased the demand for arsenical insecticide. Glass making consumes a large amount of arsenic as it has been impart increased brilliancy to the glass. Crude commercial arsenic is often used to kill weeds along railroad tracks. Arsenious oxide is used also for preserving hides, while the disulphide, AS2S2), finds an application in dehairing hides for the finest grade leather, as it least affects the product. Orpiment (As233), is used in textile dyeing. Wall paints and wall paper formerly consumed considerable arsenic in the form of paris green, but this use has been largely,given up due to the poisonous nature of the dust from the product. Sodium arsenate for a similar reason, is now little used in printing where it had found application. The great objection to arsenical yes and paints is the risk of poisoning from use of the manufactured article. Sodium arsenite is the principal poisonous in¬gredient of many cattle and sheep dips. Arsenic compounds are also used medicinally."

"INTRODUCTION Direct visual microscopic determination of particle-size distribution and number concentration of atmospheric dust is time-consuming and trying to the eyes. By using the microscope to project images of the particles at high magnification onto a screen much of the eyestrain can be eliminated and particle-size distribution results obtained with less effort and at a considerable saving in time. It also permits simultaneous observation of the images by more than one person. Microprojection requires no more skill and very little more apparatus than is required in the use of the microscope. Anyone familiar with the microscope should be able to obtain as perfect images on the projection screen as in direct visual microscopy since the same laws and limitationsThe theory and practice of microprojection are described in detail in texts. 5/6/ The procedure has been used and found to be satisfactory for measuring the particle-size distribution of sub-sieve-size substances, such as pigments and powder 7/8/ in the same size range as that of atmospheric dust. The Bureau of Mines has used the microprojector and found it to be quite satisfactory for (1) the determination of the number concentration of atmospheric dust R.I. 3289 in samples collected by the Owens jet dust counter; (2) particle-size distribution in samples of atmospheric dust collected by the Owens jet dust counter and by the electric precipitator; and (3) the particle-size distribution of dusts, blood cells, bacteria, and pollen. Work is in progress at this Bureau on the use of the microprojector in counting impinger samples. The use of different kinds of illumination, such as reflected (dark field), polarized, monochromatic, and ultraviolet, in the projection of images of atmospheric dust particles is being considered."

The Broughton and Ring magnetite deposits in Essex County, N. Y., are thought to be in a mineralized belt that extends from the Lake Sanford mining district to Lake Champlain and passes through the Mineville district. The country rook is syenite-gneiss, similar to that in the Mineville area. The Bureau of Mines conducted a vertical magnetometer survey of the area. On the Broughton properties there are no indications, magnetically, of magnetite in any degree of concentration. 'On the ding properties a number of sharp, localized magnetic anomalies were observed. One core-drill hole was bored to a, depth of 48.3 feet, also, to test one of the strongest anomalies. The field work was in progress from December 1943 to July 1944. Although no iron ore was intersected by' the drill hole, it showed that the amphibolite rook, at a depth of 6 to 100 feet below the surface, contained enough magnetite and iron sulfides to account for the anomalies recorded by the magnetometer survey.

In 1981 the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the 5,100 acre (2,065 ha) Rubicon RARE II area (No. 5026) in the El Dorado National Forest (fig. 1). Work by the Bureau of Mines indicates that potential for mineral resources in the area is low. Samples from small gravel deposits along the Rubicon River and from favorable structures in the area contained smart amounts of economic minerals. A Tertiary river channel near the north area boundary contains gold values as much as $137.60 per cu yd ($180 per cu m) [(gold at $400 per troy oz ($12.86 per g)]. The channel does not cross the study area. Energy resource potential, including oil, gas, or geothermal, does not exist in this geologic environment.

To expediate the transfer of technology from Bureau laboratories into new products and processes that enhance the economic competitiveness of the U.S. mining and minerals industry in world markets. Background The U.S. Bureau of Mines and various members of the industry are concerned about the current technology challenge to the minerals industry in the United States. They arc working together to delineate ways of enhancing the mineral industry's technology base. More emphasis is being placed on collaboration between the government, academia, and industry to formulate the innovative revolutions needed to maintain our technology edge. Through these partnerships, real issues and problems can be identified, the industry's needs as customers can be defined, and research and development activities can be tailored to meet these needs. Now is an especially exciting time in research because some special opportunities exist to encourage private industry to capitalize on Federal laboratory research and development. These opportunities arc called CRADA's. What Is A CRADA? The Congress recently enacted a mechanism that enhances collaboration between industry and government through the Technology Transfer Act of 1986. A key lea lure of this Act is a provision through which Cooperative Research and Development Agreements or CRADA's can be developed to encourage industry and government to work together and stretch their research budgets. By entering into a CRADA, a private, non-Federal company can cost-effectively perform research by sharing the costs of this research with the Federal Government. The agree¬ment involves no transfer of funds from the Government. The Government agrees to provide personnel, services, facilities, equipment or other resources (but nut funds) and the non-Federal party agrees to provide funds, personnel, services, facilities, equipment, or other resources needed to conduct a specific research or development effort.

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are emerging as viable replacements for incandescent-based cap lamps used in mining. The photometric and energy characteristics of these light sources differ in important ways. The present paper describes the performance of LED and incandescent sources in cap lamps in terms of correlated color temperature, color rendering, light output, electric power, ambient temperature and airflow, and light source aging. Importantly, these characteristics can influence a miner?s ability to spot mining hazards thus impacting safety. Secondly, some of these characteristics interact with the operating life of the cap lamp?s battery power, such that differences between LED and incandescent sources can be magnified toward the end of a 10­hour battery discharge cycle. Empirically, we have determined that after 8 hours at an ambient temperature of 25 °C, the average light output of an incandescent cap lamp can decrease to about 69% of its initial value when powered by a lead-acid battery and it can decrease to about 65% of its initial value when powered by a nickel-hydride battery. An LED-based cap lamp using a constant current drive circuit can maintain about 96% of its initial value when powered by a nickel-hydride battery. Real-world tests addressing the effects of ambient temperature and airflow on the light output of an LED and incandescent cap lamp were conducted in the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM). The LED cap lamp yielded a vertical average illuminance improvement of approximately 9.5% and the INC cap lamp yielded a vertical average illuminance degradation o f approximately 4%. The differences between LED and incandescent cap lamps were further quantified by the calculation of ?mesopic luminance? data that indicated for the same photopic luminance (i.e., as measured using a conventional light meter) the LED cap lamp could be up to 38 % more efficient than the incandescent cap lamp with a lead-acid battery at the end of the 10-hour driving cycle. Lastly, accelerated life tests were used to empirically determine light output depreciation as the incandescent light source age approached its useful life. There was about a 35% decrease in light output. This is quite considerable, especially given that the light output will decrease an additional 30% to 45% over the period of a 10-hour shift. The implications of the differences between LED and incandescent sources are discussed. This information is crucial in determining how visual performance could be affected for real-world conditions where batteries discharge during the work shift and as the light source ages. To date, only idealized conditions have been used for LED and incandescent cap lamp visual performance research.

"In addition to the usual interpretation that is placed on the words ""thief"" and ""thieves"", the petroleum industry also uses these words when referring to an instrument that is used for taking samples of oil from a tank or reservoir. It is an abbreviation of the term ""thief-tube"". It is desirable in sampling volumes of oil in tanks or reservoirs to obtain samples at different intervals below the surface of the fluid, because of the variation in the character of the oil at different depths. It is for this purpose that the ""thief"" is used.The subject of oil thieves is probably as old as the oil industry itself. Opinions as to which is the most practical instrument for thieving oil in tanks, to obtain a true average sample, differ wherever oil is produced and is analyzed. Every district, and even many of the companies within the district, will have different appliances for ""grabbing"" oil samples. It is interesting to note in passing that though the thief has an apparently insignificant part in the handling of oil, yet the results depending on it are of paramount importance practically every branch of the transportation, refining, and marketing of petroleum. Determinations, particularly dependent on a representative sample, are made by the centrifuge, laboratory distillation tests, and the hydrometer.The purpose of this article is to discuss conditions found in the California fields. Only a general description of types of thieves and the methods of using them will be given. However, it is believed sufficient data are given to enable the reader to form his own opinion as to which of the devices is most practicable under the prevailing conditions. Thieves of all types have their good points, speaking broadly, and it is possible to get good results with any of them, provided they are operated according to instructions and with due care. In work of this kind the advantages or disadvantages reside in the person operating the instrument rather than in the instrument used."

"INTRODUCTION The Ward copper deposit was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines in September 1943 by John J. Knob, 217 E. Penn Street, Long Beach, N. Y. At that time all Bureau of Mines work on Seward Peninsula was being directed to the exploration of deposits of tin, a metal high on the strategic list. It was not until September 1946 that the Bureau could make a preliminary examination of the Ward prospect.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Heavy liquids have been used to separate minerals of different specific gravities for many years.4 5 6 7 8 9/ The method permits substantially quantitative evaluation of a variety of minerals and requires much less time than the usual methods of chemical analysis. This Bureau of Mines investigation was conducted to determine the applicability of heavy liquid mineral separation to the evaluation of certain spodumene and kyanite ores, prepared mixtures, and plant products. After careful standardization of the particular mineral and associated gangue, estimates of chemical analyses could be obtained from results of heavy liquid separations.

"This study reports a new property of the important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes, glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin- NADP oxidoreductase, that can catalyze a one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V). During the enzymatic reduction process, molecular oxygen is reduced to H2O 2 , which reacts with the reduced metal complexes to generate hydroxyl radicals. Since the hydroxyl radicals have been suggested to play an important role in Cr(VI) toxicity, this study provides a basis for a recent observation that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent. These results also point to an enzymatic pathway for the metabolism of some metal ions and concomitant generation of hydroxyl radicals. l. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this communication is to report that some important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) can catalyze one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V) and simultaneously reduce molecular oxygen to generate Hi02 and, eventually, the ""OH radical. This finding is significant because (i) the known substrates for the flavoenzymes are organic species and not metal ions, and (ii) the report on the enzymatic formation of the ""OH radical provides a new pathway for understanding the mechanism of genotoxicity of some non-ferrous metal ions. For example, it has been suggested that OH radical is likely to be the major species responsible for Cr(VI) genotoxicity [1-5). The 'OH radical is generated through the reaction of Cr(V) complexes with cellular Hi02 [4,5]. Cr(V) itself is known to be generated from Cr(VI) in various biological systems, in particular, microsomes [ 6), mitochondria [7] and mitochondrial electron transfer chain complexes [8]. However, no specific enzyme responsible for the Cr(V) generation has been identified except possibly glutathione reductase [4]. In this study we have used ESR and spin trapping techniques to show that the flavoenzymes can generate Cr(V) and provide a catalytic redox cycle for 'OH formation in such reactions. This report summarizes cost data accumulated during 15 months of sustained operation of the Bureau of Mines Boulder City (Nev.) titanium plant, which had a capacity of about 1,350 pounds of titanium sponge per day. The plant was constructed during the 1952 fiscal year with funds supplied by the Ordnance Corps, Department of the Army. Its original purpose was to engage in process development work as a continuing phase of the Bureau of Mines policy to seek improvements in producing titanium metal. In early 1953 the Defense Materials Procurement Agency contracted with the Bureau of Mines for producing approximately one-half million pounds of usable ductile titanium sponge. Production began in May 1953, ended in September 1954, and yielded 492,503 pounds of acceptable metal. Operating costs covering this period of operation, with suggested depreciation and administrative costs, are given, as well as outlines of building and equipment capital costs. In addition, miscellaneous economic considerations are discussed, including labor and operating-time schedules.

"Among the surplus explosives left on band with the War Department was a quantity of that styled Trojan Grenade Powder, which was especially designed during the war for use as a bursting charge in grenades and for which naturally there would be very little military use in time of peace. With a view to its disposal through use in civil projects a quantity was sent to the Bureau of Minas explosives experiment station, where analysis showed that its characteristic explosive ingredient was nitrostarcn and that the powder bad the following composition:Trojan Grenade Powder appears as a dark gray granular substance, part of which is slightly pulverulent. The granules fairly hard. The explosive is not at all dusty, and has the consistency of granulated sugar.Nitrostarch is a substance produced by treating starch with nitric and sulphuric acids and in appearance it looks very little different from powdered starch. It resembles nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin in its constitution and explosive properties and has been longer known than either, it having been prepared by Braconnet in 1833. Nitrostarch explosives have in recent years been developed for industrial use in this country, they having been used to an extent in blasting in the Canal Zone, yet as this grenade powder was a special composition it seemed desirable that a complete series of tests should be run upon it. This was done, and the results are reported in the following table in comparison with those previously obtained in testing ammonia dynamite."

In characterizing tars obtained by the low-temperature carbonization of North Dakota lignite, infrared spectra have been an invaluable aid in both qualitative and quantitative examination. Quite, early in the tar-research program of the Federal Bureau of Mines it became evident that the small number of published spectra available for hydroxy-aromatics would be inadequate for comparative purposes when dealing with the wide range of compounds present in coal tar; therefore, compiling a catalog of spectra was begun as a continuing part of the tar program. Because these spectra should be valuable to other investigators in this and related fields, they are being presented in these reports. This supplement to the original publications presents the spectra (figs, I to 32), representing 32 compounds, largely phenolic materials. The major problem of this project has been the availability of materials for examination. Most of the compounds included in this supplement were synthesized at the Bureau of Mines Lignite Research Laboratory. Some were obtained from commercial sources, whereas the compound 2'-hydroxy-l-phenylnaphthalene was synthesized at the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Bruceton, Pa. The spectrum of 2-ethyl-4-methylphenol, figure 32, is a correction of the spectrum presented as figure 26 in the original reports

This Bureau of Mines report presents a mathematical model for heterogeneously catalyzed chemical reactors operating under turbulent conditions. The model includes reaction kinetics on the catalyst surface as well as diffusion of the reacting components within the reactor. Three applications of the model to tube-wall methanation reactors are discussed. The first application is a computation of catalyst activity from measured reactor data. This result is then used in a reactor sizing problem and a problem of reactor simulation with recycle. In addition to the reactor model, a novel approach to solving the recycled reactor problem is given.
