"A helicopter-borne geophysical survey was flown in 1978 over selected areas on Kyushu Island, Japan. The principal sensors were a moving source electro-magnetic system and a magnetometer. Maps of apparent resistivity were generated from the EM data. Based on the resistivity signature of known deposits within the survey areas, targets were selected for ground follow-up. Drilling of one such target in late 1980 resulted in the discovery of a gold deposit from which full production will begin in the summer of 1985. The deposit contains a minimum 120 tonnes (3.86 million ounces) of recoverable gold and is the largest in Japanese history. The deposit is in a geological setting previously unsuspected of hosting precious metal deposits. The case history suggests a preferred exploration strategy which might be employed in other similar geological environments.IntroductionThe Hishikari area is located some forty-five kilometres north of Kagoshima city, Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu Island, Japan (Fig. I). The area and its environs is one with a number of gold deposits which have been worked with varying results since the late 1800s. The large st deposit in terms of recovered gold is the Ohkuchi (or Oguchi) Mine (Fig . 2) which was recently closed due to exhaustion of reserves. The Ohkuchi Mine started production in 1896. A total of 22.2 tonnes (714 ,000 ounces) of gold, with an average ore grade of 13.6 grams/tonne (0.39 ounces/ton), was extracted over the Life of the mine.In an attempt to discover new deposits , the Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ) carried out a regional geologic mapping program of the area between 1975 and 1977. This was followed by a helicopter-borne electromagnetic and magnetic survey. The airborne survey was flown by Scintrex and the compiled results presented to MMAJ in early 1979."

"Operations started at BCL in December 1973J and the smelter is currently in the seventh year of its fifth campaign. The next major shutdown is scheduled for 1995. During the current campaign, a number of major on-line refurbishments have been carried out without any significant disruption to production. These include the complete rebuild of both drying plant electrostatic precipitators, the installation of a new electrostatic precipitator at the flash furnace, the conversion to a distributed control system throughout the smelter, and the installation of a converter air blowing control system.IntroductionBCL Limited operates a nickel-copper mine in northeastern Botswana approximately 100 km southwest of Francistown. Surface operations for the production of high-grade nickel-copper matte at a design capacity of 42 000 metric tonnes per annum, were commissioned in December 1973. Detailed descriptions of the mine and surface facilities have been presented previously(1-3).Over the years, a number of major engineering modifications and metallurgical projects have been carried out to overcome operating difficulties. improve metal recoveries, increase production rates and provide a better working environment.One of the major results of these projects was an increase in the 19805 in flash furnace feed capacity from 70 t/h to 120 t/h of new concentrate with a nominal feed rate of 105 t/h being achieved.(4)Because of the ore characteristics, i.e. a high mass fraction of ore reporting to concentrate, BCL operates one of the highest capacity spray drying plants and flash smelting furnaces in the world(5).A schematic of the BCL smelter is shown in Figure 1. "The property of Arntfield Mining Corporation, formerly Arntfield Gold Mines, Limited, covers an area of 2,110 acres and lies in Beauchastel township, western Quebec. The Francoeur mine lies to the west, and to the east are the West Wasa and Wasa Lake properties.The property was staked in September, 1923, by the late F. S. Arntfield. The early surface work was concentrated in the west part of the property along the Francoeur-Arntfield shear zone. The zone was opened by No. 1 shaft, which was sunk for an inclined depth of 250 feet. A series of silicified lenses were discovered farther east, where No. 2 shaft was later raised to the surface. A third shaft explored a shear zone about 1,900 feet to the east, where No. 3 shaft orebodies were developed.The mill was built at No. 3 shaft and production commenced in July, 1935, at 125 tons a day. This was increased to 280 tons by 1938, and later to 350 tons. The mine continued operations on this scale until April, 1942, when the exigencies of war necessitated closing. The Company was reorganized in 1944 and underground development was resumed in June, 1945. The total value of gold and silver produced to April, 1942, was $2,011, 755 from 529,987 tons of ore.ROCK TYPESThe area is underlain by highly deformed and altered Keewatin volcanics overlain by little deformed Cobalt sediments along the south boundary. The lavas in the vicinity of the mine workings are rhyolite, trachyte, andesite, and a flow breccia of intermediate composition. The fragmentals range from fine, well-bedded tuffs to coarse agglomerate in which acidic and basic horizons can be distinguished.The intrusive rocks are diorite and quartz-feldspar porphyry in the form of stock and sills, and narrow dykes of mica lamprophyre and syenite porphyry."

"The usual complaint of mines is that grade does not match exploration expectations. Quite often, more tons are mined than expected but at a lower grade. This can be seen as dilution. Geostatistics can help predict which dilution can be expected both in terms of grade and tonnage for different mining methods.The usual vocabulary of geostatistics speaks of block distribution; block variance, size effect, information effect, all terms which say very little to the practitioner. In f act, all this can be rephrased in terms of dilution .In this paper, the following is presented - an example which shows how reserves change with the size of selection units and number of samples taken, and tables which show the dilution that are bound to happen when dealing with the commonly encountered log-normal distribution. Finally, the paper shows how grade tonnage computations should be made in the case of an arbitrary distribution. IntroductionGeostatistics progresses more and more rapidly if one judge s by the number and quality of papers published in Mathematical Geology or at APCOM meetings. More and more case studies describing successful applications are published (David et al., 1986)(Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1987). It is estimated that more than 270/0 of the gold mines around the world use geostatistics. There is still, however, a lot of resistance from the remaining 73%. Geostatistics has more formulae and equations than it needs to reach year 2000. We will be well into the third millenium before all the models available now are actually used. The progress may come in the form of finding better ways to present known statistical results and getting away from the jargon of geostatisticians. One example may be in trying to explain how we can answer the most common plea of the mining industry: production grade is not what was expected in the feasibility study."

"A sample of flotation feed from Bakertalc Inc., High water, Quebec was subjected to flotation evaluation to improve the recovery of talc. A number of alternative frother/collectors and depressants as well as flotation parameters including pH, conditioning time, frother/collector concentration and pulp density were assessed. In addition, the possibility of using a size coarser than that currently employed for flotation (95% minus 50 um) was investigated.As far as possible, a laboratory duplication of the present circuit arrangement was folio wed so as to minimize the cost of any changes. The best results obtained were a concentrate analyzing 95.96% acid insol for a recovery of 65.98% after four stages of cleaning. With recirculation of cleaner tailings, the recovery would be higher.The possibility of using an alternative method, based on the natural ability of talc to float unaided by a frother/collector, was briefly explored with encouraging results.IntroductionBakertalc lnc ., located in the eastern townships at Highwater, Quebec, Is approximately 140 km east of Montreal near the Vermont, U.S. border. Originally called Baker Mining and Milling Co. Ltd., it has produced pulverized talc products since 1938(1 ), although records show that talc was mined in the area as early as 1871(2). Feed to the mill originally was obtained from local deposits, but since 1952 the van Reet mine near south Bolton, approximately 25 km from Highwater, has been the source of ore .In 1957 a Raymond high -side roller mill was installed which enabled production of a greater range of talc products and, in 1960, new crushing equipment and a dryer were added. Other additions to the mill were the introduction of wet magnetic separation, although this was later discontinued, and flotation to produce high-grade talc concentrates."

"Many plants use computers for process control and most have computerized Management Information Systems but few have been able to have these systems interact with one another. Developing this system interaction is not a one-step process but requires careful planning and implementation. This paper describes two projects that were implemented to provide the bridge between the process control and management information systems of Cominco Limited. Both projects include the replacement of essentially process control systems installed in the late 1960s. These original systems provided an enhanced level of control in the form of Direct Digital Control (via computer/manual analogue control stations) and a management reporting capability of process data. The experience gained from the use of these systems over a period of fifteen years formed a basis for the evaluation and planning for the new systems. The new systems were commissioned in 1985 and 1986 and operating and further developments leading to a totally integrated process information and control system are underway. INTRODUCTIONThe concept of hierarchical control involves a control structure consisting of a number of defined levels. Each level performs a defined function with information consolidated and combined as it moves up through the hierarchical structure. The commonly accepted structure of a hierarchical control system echoes the structure of the plant which is being controlled. Referring to Figure 1:Level 0 - Sensors and ActuatorsSensors and actuators, such as thermocouples and flow control valves, interface directly to the process and are generally connected directly to the controllers or multiplexers at Level I.Level 1 - Regulatory ControlThis level provides basic PID control (proportional/integral/ derivative) typically using microprocessor based controllers and programmable controllers for digital control of motors and machines. Systems at this levelare usually segregated by plant unit, e.g, crushing, flotation, drying. Control is concentrated on achieving optimum conditions for a particular feed rate."

"Commercial coal mining has been recorded in Nova Scotia since 1863 and during this period an estimated 60,000,000 short tons of mine discard containing 10 1030% coal has been accumulated, Approximately 70% of these dumps are in the Cape Breton region and most are owned by the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC), formerly DEVCO.The explosion of oil produced energy costs which created an increase in thermal coal demand as well as the desire to rehabilitate abandoned mine dumps encouraged coal reclamation. CBDC was receptive to a proposal from the Selminco Joint Venture and encouraged the building of the Princess Recovery Plant (1980) and The Summit Plant (1982).The mine dump contains scrap, waste rocks, coal and substantial quantities of fine shale. The scrap and oversize are removed and the remaining material slurried with water to a density of 1.45. The slurry is cycloned to separate the saleable thermal coal from the rejects which are returned to designated areas of the dump for contouring and revegetation.BackgroundThe recorded coal production in Nova Scotia from 1863 to 1980 was 390,000,000 short tons. This extraction was associated with an estimated 60,000,000 short tons of discarded material. This mining discard and coal washing plant reject are located in numerous, varying sized dumps throughout the mining areas. Approximately 70% of these dumps are in the Sydney coal field region of Nova Scotia. The coal content of these dumps varies from 10 to 30% coal with an average of 18%.Energy CostsThe explosion o f energy costs in the mid-1970s greatly increased the sale price of thermal coal which made recovery of coal from some of the dumps economical. The environmental benefit of these operations will be the rehabilitation of the dumps upon cessation of the coal reclamation operation."

"Transfer points on belt conveyors have long been a source of problems for both designers and users. Conveyors are generally given a low priority in new equipment layout, thus designers are often forced to compromise due to space limitations. Consequently, for this reason as well as for reasons of initial economics, many conveyors are supplied with less than adequate transfer points.Although not intended as a cure-all, a number of existing installations have been modified with the result that spillage has been reduced to a minimum and belt life has been extended. The most striking modification consisted of replacing conventional rigid frame idlers with five-roll catenary idlers.Although catenary idlers can be traced back to the early 1900s in North America, with a patent having been issued in Washington, D.C. as early as May 29, 1907, the practical application of this concept has only recently reached North America. Major installations include applications at St. Lawrence Cement in Oakville and Iron Ore Company of Canada in Sept-Iles, as well as belt conveyors at Stelco's Nanticoke plant and yard conveyors at Syncrude in Alberta. These installations were part of major capital expenditures for new facilities and included complete conveyor systems.However, this article will discuss the use of catenary idlers on existing rigid frame conveyors for the purpose of absorbing the energy of falling lumps, protecting conveyor belts and reducing spillage. We will deal specifically with an installation at Inco Metals Company in Sudbury, Ontario, where approximately 40 five-roll catenary idlers were installed on a 42-in.-wide belt conveyor handling ore located under the railroad car dumper at the Clarabelle Mill. Before-and-after photographs clearly show the tremendous improvement in the cleanliness of the location, and the savings in maintenance costs and extended belt life have prompted Inco to consider modifying other conveyors."

"The fire resistance of several mine conveyor belts is evaluated using a new belt-flammability apparatus developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The test apparatus, experimental details and a calculated flammability index (FI) are described.The FI values are useful for ranking the fir e resistance of mine conveyor belts. Values are determined using parameters readily measured with thermocouples, high-temperature flow probes and a methane-oxygen torch, all of which are components of the Bureau's new test apparatus. The FI varies directly with the flame-spread rate and the rate of heat release during burning and varies inversely with the critical (minimum) ignitor energy output.The fire-resistance ranking of nine different belt types using this moderately scaled apparatus is compared with available full-scale data on belt fires. This comparison shows that the ranking based on the FI is consistent with the full-scale data.IntroductionFull-scale fire hazard evaluations of mine conveyor belts are not easily related to the properties usually measured in small-scale flammability tests. The inadequacy of small-scale belt fire tests has been demonstrated in works by Mitchell, Warner and Reinke.Mitchell and Warner showed that certain neoprene (NP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) belts, which had been approved by the Code of Federal Regulations 30 CFR 18.65, were nevertheless capable of propagating flame over their entire length when full-scale fire conditions were simulated. Comparable results were also observed by Reinke at the Tremonia experimental mine in Dortmund, West Germany, where all belts burned in full-scale tests even though they passed the small-scale tests. Only by reducing the severity of the full-scale test could these fire-resistant belts be grouped on a pass-fail basis."

The conventional jarosite precipitation process with neutralization by zinc calcine is widely utilized in the zinc industry. However, it has a significant drawback of causing losses of valuable metals like zinc, lead and silver to the jarosite. This comes mainly from the content of these metals in the calcine used for neutralization. As the zinc plants today want to maximize metal recoveries and minimize the amount of residues, this matter has become more and more relevant for zinc producers. Outotec developed and patented in early 2000 an improved version of the jarosite precipitation process in which the need for neutralization can be minimized, thus the metal losses to the jarosite also can be minimized. At the same time, the iron content of the jarosite increases and the amount of produced jarosite is smaller. The main feature of this process is to start the precipitation from ferrous iron after having reduced all the iron by zinc concentrate in a separate step before jarosite precipitation. Iron is then oxidised back to the ferric form simultaneously with jarosite precipitation. By this method, the formation of sulphuric acid is only half that compared to the conventional method and the need for calcine for neutralization can be avoided. High mixing and oxygen dispersion capability are needed in this jarosite precipitation process. Such capabilities are found in the Outotec OKTOP® reactor series. High performance reactors are not only needed to generate high quality precipitates, but also to maximize oxygen utilization; i.e., to minimize operation costs. "Pilot precipitator tests were conducted at Noranda's Horne Smelter in late 1978 to evaluate methods of improving converter dust collection efficiency. A bout 35 Nms/min. of converter off-gas were isokineticatly diverted from the converter flue to the pilot precipitator leased from Flakt (Canada) Ltd., consisting of three fields, one transformer-rectifier set per field and 77-m2 total collecting plate area. The effects of gas volume flow rate and conditioning the gas with sulphur trioxide and/or additional moisture were tested. II was found that gas flow rate and moisture level had the most pronounced effect on collection efficiency. Based on a techno-economic assessment of different options for improving converter Courell efficiency, waffle hoods and water sprays were installed on the converters to reduce air infiltration and increase the moisture level in the gas.BackgroundThe Horne Smelter of Noranda Inc. is situated in northwestern Quebec and, since the closure o f the min e in 1976, has been operating as a custom smelter. The concentrates treated at the smelter come from various mines with mixed sulphide ores , many o f them containing significant amounts of lead and zinc which makes dust collection in electrostatic precipitators mo re difficult than normal.As part of a continuing program on reducing smelter dust emissions, the No . 6 Cottrell was installed in 1972 up stream of Nos. 2 and 4 Cottrells (in parallel) in a n attempt to improve dust collection by increasing the over- all precipitator capacity ( Fig. I). However, it has never per formed a t its designed efficiency o f 94%. The average efficiency established in various test s was in the range of 60 – 65%."

"Fifty years of wear on the original carbon steel shaft of this hydro turbine necessitated repair operations in 1980. Both austenitic and martensitic stainless steels have been used individually as journal materials in separate trials on an80-inch long and 22-inch diameter radial bearing but neither one nor the other has been successful.The wear and cracking problems of the stainless steels leading to the present abandonment of both classes of stainless steel are described. In particular the dependence of the toughness of type 410 stainless steel on its tempering temperature and the susceptibility of that steel to quench cracking are highlighted because problems have been caused by both of these metallurgical factors.IntroductionAs part of a desire to improve the efficiency of a fifty-year old hydro-electric generating station on the Saint John River, the decision was made to change the journal and bearing material for the shaft bearings, which are stave-type bearings. For the initial fifty years of operation the bearings had been wooden (lignum vitae) and had run on the carbon steel shaft directly. For one of the four unit s at this station the performance of this combination has been truly excellent, and the remaining three sets of bearings had performed well. However there had been shaft wear on the units and the wear had made the shafts somewhat elliptical when a decision was made to install some sort of new journal on to three of the old shafts. [In addition to the wear on the carbon steel journals it was found that one shaft was significantly softer in the bearing area than it was immediately above the bearings (180 Vickers in comparison with 230 to 250 Vickers)] ."

"Solvent extraction is the one of the most common techniques for recovering metal ions from aqueous systems. However, it is not efficient in the extraction of low concentration metal ions from aqueous solutions. Predispersed solvent extraction (PDSE) is an alternative method for solvent extraction which implies colloidal liquid aphrons as extracting agents in order to reach higher interfacial area and lower reagent consumption. This work investigated important parameters in PDSE of nickel ions from dilute aqueous solutions by fractional factorial design of experiments. Four experimental parameters, the initial extractant concentration, initial surfactant concentration, equilibrium pH and phase volume ratio (organic to aqueous ratio) were investigated. The important parameters were determined as well as important interactions between these parameters. It was found that extractant concentration, phase volume ratio, and equilibrium pH are the most significant experimental parameters. However, the interaction between surfactant concentration and other parameters was determined as significant interactions.INTRODUCTIONNickel is one of the key components found in cars, mobile phones, rechargeable batteries, kitchen appliances, and steel industry (Anyadike, 2002). It is one of the most important metals produced by Canada which is in the five top nickel producers in the world. Despite a 24% decrease in the nickel prices from 2011 to 2014 the nickel global mine production increased by 36% between these years (U.S. Geological Survey, 2015; Nickel - Statista Dossier, 2015), which shows the increasing demand for nickel. This high demand leads producers to consider the production of nickel from low grade ores and other secondary sources such as process wastewaters. The removal of nickel ions from process wastewater is also important due to environmental considerations. Nickel is known to be a human carcinogen and it may cause serious lung and kidney problems, pulmonary fibrosis, gastrointestinal distress, and skin dermatitis if it exceeds the critical level (Borba et al., 2006; Fu & Wang, 2011)."

"This paper provides an overview of the use of uranium and coal in Ontario Hydro's generation program. The dynamics of available supply sources including mining and transportation infrastructures and regional considerations are described. Included is a discussion of needed procurement strategies, both in place and planned, to meet fluctuating fuel requirements while ensuring adequate supply security and cost effectiveness. IntroductionDuring the first half of this century, Ontario Hydro or the Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario, as it was then known substantially supplied all of the province's electricity needs from a large number of hydraulic generating stations. Although hydraulic power still provides a very significant part of Ontario energy requirements, this paper will concentrate on the role of uranium and coal in their generation program. To provide a perspective on the importance of these two fuels, Figure I shows the approximate value of each for the past few years in relation to Hydro's total operating costs. The trend toward increasing nuclear output and a corresponding decline in coal use is also clearly illustrated.Figure 2 shows the currently installed capacity of their three main energy sources, hydraulic, nuclear and coal and the 1986 production totals for each, followed by Table I which compares the average operating or running cost on the basis of dollars per megawatt hour for each type of plant. It demonstrates dramatically why Ontario Hydro base load s its hydraulic and nuclear plants, and why coal has become the swing fuel on the system. Although they have a 1200 megawatt plant in Toronto with natural gas-burning capability, and a 2000 megawatt oil-fired station near Kingston, both are presently mothballed and have not been considered in this paper.This paper starts with a user's perspective of the nuclear fuel supply situation which will be discussed in relation to the usual considerations of security, flexibility and cost."

"Solids concentration (% solids) profiles and the clear liquid/slurry interface level (mudline) were determined from conductivity measurements in thickeners at Falconbridge' s Strathcona mill (Ni concentrate and non-mag thickeners) and Kidd Creek Division (Cu, Zn concentrates and final tails in the concentrator and thickeners in the Zn plant).The conductivity measurement system consisted of a probe 1.5 m in length with 24 electrode cells, a 24-channel relay, a conductivity meter and a computer. A conductivity profile is collected which locates the mud-line by the sharp change in conductivity. The conductivity measurements are readily converted to solids concentration profiles without need for calibration.The results from the conductivity measurements were compared with those from pressure profiles and direct measurements on local samples obtained using a modified Noranda sampler.It is concluded that the conductivity technique is applicable to locate the mud-line and to estimate the solids concentration profiles in thickeners. This on-line information could improve the operational efficiency of industrial thickeners.INTRODUCTIONAn automated, on-line technique for detecting the clear liquid/slurry interface (or mudline) and the variation in solids concentration with depth would enhance thickener operation and control. In some processes such enhanced control offers significant benefits. For example, in hydrometallurgical operations solid/liquid separation is often the process limiting step. Water treatment plants are increasingly expected to operate remotely and reliable sensing is vital.Current attempts to detect the mud-line include reflection of some signal (e.g. sonar), floats (Dahlstrom, 1985) and measurement of pressure (Rosenblum, 1991), and in one case, natural radioactivity of the solids (Johnston and Simic, 1991). A recent commercial development uses reflection from a vertical array of optical transmitters/sensors, which also gives local solids concentration (BTG Inc., 1991)."

"The Monkman Coal Property is located in the Northeast Coal Block of British Columbia. It is divided into the Duke Mountain Block on the north east and the Dip Slope on the west. Together, these areas cover 39,503 ha of coal licences.The property is underlain by Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous marine and continental sedimentary rocks. Economic coal measures are contained within the Gates Formation. Exploration of the property began in the early I970s, with drilling commencing in 1975. To date, 255 holes have been drilled and nine adits have been driven to recover unoxidized coal samples.The property has a geological resource potential of 2.8 billion tonnes of medium and high-volatile bituminous coal. Medium-volatile bituminous reserves, totalling 68.9 million ROM tonnes at an over-all strip ratio of 6.3:1, have been identified in three pit areas in the Duke Mountain Block.Construction start-up will commence when sales contracts are arranged. The clean coal will be exported via the Ridley Island Terminal at Prince Rupert.IntroductionThe Monkman Coal Property is located in the Northeast Coal Block of British Columbia in the southern port ion of the Peace River Coalfield. The coal field encompasses a strike length of 250 km of Lower Cretaceous coal-bearing strata in which 13 companies have identified several billion tonnes of resources and several hundred million tonnes of reserves. Currently, two companies with contracts are in the construction phase, and are scheduled to produce coal by early 1984. Quintette Coal Ltd. has a contract with Japanese steel mills to supply annually 5.0 million tonnes of metallurgical and 1.5 million tonnes of thermal coal. Teck Corporation (Bullmoose property) has a contract to supply 1.7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually."

"In order to determine the feasibility of a hydraulic ore hoisting installation, the optimal operating conditions were calculated for applying such a system at the Detour Lake Mine of Placer Dome Ltd. Next, a financial analysis was conducted in order to estimate the cost per tonne for hydraulic hoisting of the ore. Subsequently, the cost per tonne was compared with the hoisting costs associated with a new borehole hoist. Installing a hydraulic ore hoist at Detour Lake Mine was found to be feasible with considerably lower costs per tonne of ore. The applied research method appears to be very functional and can be used to do similar research for other mining operations. IntroductionThe principle of hydraulic ore hoisting is well known, yet hardly accepted in hard rock mining. Application of the system would result in a smaller diameter shaft requirement and a flexible, easily expandable system. However, underground ore size reduction might be necessary and practical experience with the system is limited. Following recent innovations in the field of pumping hardware, e.g. new GeHo and Siemag Transplan equipment, hydraulic ore hoisting should be seriously considered for certain mining operations. As a case study, a design was made for the development of the newly found QK-Zone at Placer Dome Ltd.’s Detour Lake Mine. Hydraulic ore hoisting has been compared with conventional skip hoisting by establishing the optimal operating conditions and pumping equipment requirements for similar capacities at a selected mining operation. Generally accepted equations for slurry transport were used to predict the variation of pressure and power requirements as a function of hourly production and pipeline diameter. These data are used to select suitable equipment and estimate cost figures in order to make a financial assessment."

LEAD poisoning is perhaps the oldest and, until recent years, the most misunderstood of all industrial diseases. Hippocrates appears to have recognized a relationship in the colic experienced by a patient who worked with metals, and the ancient literature is filled with references to the colics and 'dry bellyaches'. The colic and other sequalæ following drinking of lead-bearing waters and, particularly, wines has excited possibly more comment in the older medical literature than any other ætological factor. It was not until1656, when Stockhusen definitely connected the colic of the workmen with the fumes given off in the process, that the true danger to those working with lead was recognized. Unfortunately, something over 200 years elapsed before industry took any note of Stockhusen's discovery; it remained for Legge and Goodly and investigators of the early 1900's to forcibly educate their profession and industry to the manner in which lead gained entrance to the body. The work of Legge and Goodly was published in 1912 and the clearness with which these investigators presented the scientific data which they had accumulated will mark this volume as perhaps the first and most important contribution to our modern knowledge of the subject. It also ushered in a period when, in the short space of thirty years, lead poisoning has been reduced from one of the most baffiing and widespread o industrial diseases to one which can be anticipated and controlled. The next great contribution came in 1926 with the publication of the work of the Harvard group. Here, for the first time, was the physiological behaviour of lead laid bare, and it is to the discoveries of these authors that we owe our modern treatment of lead poisoning.

Given the limited number of new plant construction, focus is turning to the optimization of existing metallurgical roasting plants. To meet the goals of high process efficiency with limited capital expenditure, plant owners are looking for new strategies, including digitization and expert support. As a supplier for numerous roasting, gas cleaning and sulfuric acid plants, Outotec has intensified its effort in recent years to develop solutions to accommodate increasing customer need. This article presents a short review on how Outotec is applying advanced control tools for the fluidized bed industry. Focus will be given on how to transfer the existing technology (used in selected Zinc roasting plants for over a year now) to copper roasting. Outotec has developed the Pretium Roaster Optimizer, a system based on heat and mass-balanced simulation models. Direct experience with this technology will be shared and will highlight similarities to the Partial and Sulfate Copper roasting processes. Pretium detects equipment and plant bottlenecks and provides consistency in process development. The Pretium program combines 24/7 advanced online digitalization tools, along with expert personal support when required. INTRODUCTION Fluidized bed reactors have been used for commercial-scale zinc and copper roasting since the 1950s. While the principles of roasting remain unchanged, over time, the technology has advanced to improve process control of roasting plants. In the past, environmental and safety standards were the driving forces for improvement of equipment and plant design. Today, the emphasis is on plant efficiency and optimization. Another change has come in process control philosophy. While plant control and operation have traditionally been the responsibility of owner/operators, they have now shifted to include both integrated digital tools and specific know-how from engineering companies. This can be seen from the earliest design stages through commissioning and into production, as evidenced by zinc roasting plants in Mexico, Brazil and Turkey.

"IntroductionThe planning of an underground coal mine requires a complex blend of technical expertise, experience and subjective design criteria implemented by the mining engineer. Currently the procedure is largely manual and requires considerable resources to generate a single mine plan. Often three or four people are assigned to work in the development of a single draft layout. Evaluation of the layouts is also tedious as it requires many repetitive calculations. The evaluation of layouts developed manually generally attempts to derive a single economically feasible solution. Operational constraints in underground coal mining such as manpower, time, equipment, etc., do not allow the generations of more than one alternative layout. As a result, the first plan is generally the only one considered.Computer-aided mine planning can automate many of the manual procedures and calculations involved in mine planning thus allowing to evaluate man y layouts and mining strategies and to select the optimum plan with confidence. An optimized planning procedure will also provide the capability to evaluate mine performance continuously and critically, thereby helping to maximize return on investment. Although recent advances in computer graphics have provided the hardware necessary for developing and evaluating min e plans rapidly, software that will allow the mining engineer to make use of the new technology is slow in developing. The need for such software packages has been recognized and ackowledged.At several sessions in recent conferences on the applications of computers in the mining industry, the use and benefit s of computer-aided mine planning were discussed. However, there were few papers presented that referred to actual applications of interactive graphics to underground mine planning. The emphasis of this study is toward the development of a completely integrated computer-aided underground mine planning package that integrates geological modeling, engineering design and planning"
