"There is a considerable resource of data for spherical charge cratering, both as single charges and in row-of-charge geometr(1). The data are. however, based on cratering performance to a single free planar surface.In practice. the more common circumstance involves an angular surf ace geometry. such as occurs at the toe of a bench or the wall of a stope. It is for the purpose of investigating this circumstance that the described test work was conducted.The test objectives were: (1) to observe the change in single-charge cratering performance between planesurface and angle geometry; (2) to identify the optimum performance of single charges cratering to a plane surface. cratering from a bench sub-grade position and cratering from a condition of zero sub-grade or stope wall geometry; and (3) to observe the performance of row-of-charges cratering to an angular surface at various row burials and spacing. The row charge burial and spacing dimensions were to be expressed in simple numerical multiples of single-charge depth-of-burial data."

Shovels and excavators have significant blind spots due to their large sizes, increasing the chances of collision with other surrounding equipment such as haul trucks, loaders, and dozers. While a camera surveillance system is very useful in preventing collision, it can benefit from two additional features: (i) the ability to display the distance of the closest object within the view, and more importantly (ii) the ability to warn the operator if objects are getting too close. After a comparison between few different technologies, it is explained how these features can be provided by integrating rugged pulsar radar sensors with a camera system. The specific radar technology is already field proven in the harsh mining environments. Motion Metrics International Corp. has developed this exact product, which combines its 4-camera surveillance system (ViewMetricsTM) with a series of rugged radar sensor elements, named ViewMetricsTM-Radar. The radar system employs intelligent CAN bus communication to reduce wiring, hence improving hardware reliability with built-in troubleshooting features. A USB connection is the only hardware bridge between the radar sensors and the embedded computer. As such, an existing ViewMetricsTM system can be easily upgraded to ViewMetricsTM-Radar. As addition of new interfaces to the cab could result in operator distraction, this paper explains how ViewMetricsTM-Radar reduces distraction compared to other radar collision prevention systems.

"In mines employing cut-and-fill stoping (sand fill), ore passes are built as mining progresses upward. These ore pass raises are generally made from timber and form a vertical ""chimney"", like a very tall log cabin. Traditionally the chimney, or raise, is square in shape and is constructed from square timbers with stepped ends as shown in Figure I. The timbered raise is thus surrounded by sandfill on its outside, leaving the centre open for passing ore down through it. Each layer consists of four timbers and rests flush on the layer below. The corners are frequently pinned or spiked.Under certain conditions in sandfilled stopes large horizontal loads may be transmined to the raise cribbing timbers, or the ""chimney's"" walls. In deep mines, where rock bursts are a problem, it can be shown that one of the conditions for rockbursts to occur is that the burst zone be stiffer and weaker than the surrounding rock(l). This allows a strain energy build-Up in the rock surrounding the burst zone, and the rate of release of this strain energy is known to be related directly to the over-all strength and stiffness of the rock in the burst zone. In stopes that are sandfilled, attempts are, therefore, usually made to increase the strength of the sandfill by the addition of large-sized waste rock and Portland cement. These measures usually achieve the desired strength of the sandfill and, consequently, the severity and frequency of rockbursts can be reduced.Problems may arise when the now chunky sandfill transmits high loads to the raise cribbing along with relatively large move- merits. This leads to heavily stressed and strained cribbing timbers the Coeur d'Alene district in Idaho, raise cribbing failures are common. A typical mode of cribbing failure is shown in Figure 2. One learns in statics that a structure shaped like the crib in Figure I is inherently unstable , at least from a structural standpoint. The crib has pivoted, in Figure 2, into a rhombi c shape and supports very little load. Soon the four-foot square raise cribbing made from 5 in. by 5 in. timbers will no longer pass ore."

Iron removal is a common procedure in hydrometallurgy of non-ferrous metallic ores. Chemical precipitation and solvent extraction are currently the main methods employed for separation of iron from copper leach solution. However, chemical precipitation methods have the problem of producing large amounts of iron precipitates, and/or requiring high temperature and high pressure conditions for precipitation. The precipitates are difficult to separate from the solution. Emulsification is a general problem for solvent extraction, which causes loss of extractants and contamination of the electrolyte. A common problem for solvent extraction and chelating ion exchange processes is the difficult iron stripping process. Therefore, finding an efficient and environmentally friendly method for iron removal is of great significance. In this paper, new processes of using ion exchange resins to remove iron from copper leach solution have been investigated. Salicylic acid, amino carboxylic acid, amino phosphonic acid and hydroxy-oxime resins were employed to adsorb iron from a simulated copper leach solution containing 40 g/L of Cu2+ and 36 g/L of Fe3+. It was found that a hydroxy-oxime resin, named Z-Fe, has excellent adsorption selectivity on Fe3+. Desorption behavior of the resin was studied by two step elution using dilute H2SO4 and oxalic acid solution, respectively. After optimizing the adsorption-elution processes, the extent of removal of iron from the simulated copper leach solution using resin Z-Fe was 90%, while copper recovery could reach 100% in closed circuit processing.

"The pressure oxidation of sulfide minerals at temperatures above 200°C enables the extraction of base metals, improves the extractability of gold from refractory ores, enables solubilisation of PGEs and can be used to hydrothermally upgrade base metal-containing feeds. Fundamental studies reveal that the solution chemistry (and mineralogy of the solids) during pressure oxidation can be manipulated with outcomes that include (1) increased leaching rates, (2) lower oxygen requirements and (3) the formation of chemically more stable residues. This paper presents examples describing how these outcomes might be achieved based upon fundamental investigations.INTRODUCTION The application of pressure oxidation to the processing of gold ores and concentrates dates back several decades and continues to be the process of choice at operations such as Pueblo Viejo (pyritic gold) which host the largest autoclave of its kind in the world (Barrick Gold Corporation, 2016). Commercial application to the processing of base metals and PGMs resides with long established processes such as the Sherritt process, ore specific applications such as by Noril’sk, at Sepon etc. or has not proceeded to date beyond pilot scale testing (e.g. Phelps Dodge, CESL, Activox, Platsol). Recently there has been significant interest in hydrothermal upgrading options for concentrates including the NONOX and Toowong processes (Rohner et al., 2016; Weidenbach et al., 2016). The latter options suggest directions where sound knowledge of the underlying fundamentals enables novel outcomes and efficiencies to be obtained. It comes as no surprise that investigations similar to those underpinning these developing processes can be traced back several decades. It is not the subject of this paper to provide a historical perspective of the relevant autoclave chemistries but rather, to present some potential opportunities suggested by studies in our laboratories. Topics to be discussed in this paper include (1) control of metal extraction rates, (2) control of iron-residue composition and (3) control of sulfur oxidation and hence acid generation and oxygen requirements. The work described will focus upon the pressure oxidation of a nickel concentrate."

"Abstract -Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within the layered gabbro zones of the upper parts of the Bell River Complex, Matagami, Québec and the Lac Doré Complex, Chibougamau, Québec. The vanadium-rich horizons are well defined on the ground and in aeromagnetic surveys by their high magnetic susceptibility; consequently, magnetic susceptibility can be an indicator of vanadium mineralization. The main oxide minerals are ilmenite and titanian magnetite, containing 20% to 70% of volume and the ratio of titanian magnetite to ilmenite is relatively constant, ranging from about 1:1 to 2:1. Their sizes are less than 5 µm to greater than 1 mm to 2 mm, occurring as coarse- to medium-grained subhedral crystals intergrown with cumulate silicate minerals (plagioclase, pyroxene, etc.). Electron microprobe analyses indicate that the ilmenite grains are mineralogically and compositionally homogeneous and have low V contents (average 0.18% equivalent V2O5). In contrast, the titanian magnetite grains are inhomogeneous, consisting of trellisworks of ilmenite lamellae in Ti-poor, V-rich magnetite [less than 2 wt% TiO2, and 1.41% equiv. V2O5 (1.16% V2O3) for 20 analyses]. Thus, the magnetite is the principal ore mineral of vanadium; it hosts vanadium in the form of V3+, not V5+, as is commonly and erroneously reported. We have also devised a flowchart for the beneficiation of vanadium-titanium ores. Sommaire - La minéralisation de vanadium se trouve dans des horizons riches en minéraux oxydés de la partie supérieure des zones de gabbros lités des Complexes de la Rivière Bell, Matagami, Québec et du Lac Doré, Chibougamau, Québec. Des horizons riches en vanadium ont été bien définis sur le terrain et dans les levés aéromagnétiques par leur susceptibilité magnétique élevée; conséquemment, la susceptibilité magnétique est l’indicateur directe du contenu en vanadium. Les principaux minéraux oxydés sont l’ilménite et la magnétite titanifère, contenant 20% à 70% du volume et le rapport de magnétite titanifère à ilménite est relativement constant, allant d’environ 1:1 à 2:1. Leur dimension varie de 5 µm à plus grande que 1 mm à 2 mm, apparaissant sous forme de cristaux subidiomorphes, de grains grossiers à médiums, intercroissant avec la gangue silicatée (plagioclase, pyroxène, etc.) de la texture de cumulat. Les analyses à la microsonde électronique montrent que les grains d’ilménite sont minéralogiquement et chimiquement homogènes avec un faible contenu en V (moyenne 0.18% équiv. V2O5 ). Contrairement, les grains de magnétite titanifère sont hétérogènes, contenant des lamelles d’ilménite en "trellisworks"; ces grains sont pauvres en Ti et riches en V pour la portion magnétite de la magnétite titanifère [surtout contenant moins de 2 wt. % TiO2, et en moyenne 1.41% équiv. THIS paper was prompted by a persistent demand for what information we have that will throw light on the oil and gas possibilities of the Maritime Provinces. The problems involved were made familiar to the writer during three seasons of field work in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The reasons for renewed interest are: (1) In many parts of that region, the surface is underlain by a thick series of unaltered sedimentary rocks. (2) Oil seepages occur, and oil in commercial quantity has been exploited' near Moncton, New Brunswick, for many years. (3) In recent years, a new method of attack has been developed toward the finding of stratigraphic traps. This method is based on a detailed study of the geological history of the region, as revealed in surface outcrops and samples from deep wells. The well samples show the lateral variation of strata, far from any possible surface outcrop of the same beds. Sufficient work has now been done in the Maritime Provinces to reveal the broad features of the geological history and the character and distribution of the various rock formations. Comparatively little deep drilling has been done in this region, but the holes are widely scattered and the samples from them have added much to the information obtained from the numerous outcrops of bed-rock. The following discussion gives a summary of available information that has a bearing on the subject.

"ForewordA symposium on base metal deposits was held in Bathurst, New Brunswick, from June 10-13, 1990, sponsored jointly by the Geological Surveys Branch of the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources and Energy, the New Brunswick Prospectors and Developers Association, and the Geology Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. Papers prepared for the symposuim are being published as a series of articles in the CIM Bulletin. This third paper (the first was by Fyffe, et al., in Vol. 83, No. 938, the second is in this issue) in the series presents an overview of the tectonic setting and geochemistry of base metal deposits in the Eastern Townships of Quebec.ABSTRACTIt is well known that the classification system of volcanogenic massive sulphides (VMS) is based upon their metal content. This metal content, the result of hydrothermal solutions circulating within strata underlying the deposits, is generally thought to be related directly to two parameters: (1) the nature of the underlying stratigraphic sequence; and (2) the physico-chemical conditions that existed at the time of the hydrothermal event. Furthermore, these two parameters are, in turn, related to the tectonic setting. One must bear in mind that these parameters are diachronous and evolve with time. These factors are considered in our analysis of the major VMS deposits of the southeastern Quebec Appalachians. This analysis will describe the time and environment of formation of these deposits and integrate them into an evolving paleotectonic model.VMS deposits in the southeastern Quebec Appalachians formed during three distinct metallogenic episodes. During the first episode, which involved early closing of the Iapetus Ocean and associated destruction of oceanic crust by subduction processes(Early Ordovician?), cupriferous VMS deposits hosted by pillowed, mafic (boninitic) lava flows were formed in immature island-arc systems (""Cyprus-type"", e.g. Huntingdon deposit).In the second episode, which also occurred during the closure of Iapetus but at a later stage (Early to Middle Ordovician), mature island-arcs formed and hosted polymetallic VMS deposits (""Kuroko-type"", e.g. Eustis deposit).Finally, during culmination of the Taconic and/or Acadian orogenies (Middle Ordovician and/or Devonian), transtensional basins, associated with tholeitic to transitional mafic volcanism began to develop. Major sedimentation occurred contemporaneous with volcanism, and within this framework polymetallic VMS deposits were formed (""Besshi-type"", e.g. the Memphremagog deposit).Although incomplete, the proposed paleotectonic model represents the sequence of the tectonic settings that prevailed during the formation of the VMS deposits of the southeastern Quebec Appalachians."

Underground mines, with their relatively high ground temperature and their extensive backfilled stopes provide a great opportunity for producing geothermal heat. The novel idea of installing a network of heat exchange tubes into stopes prior to backfill placement converts each mine stope into a heat producing battery. In this system, backfill plays the role of the heat exchange medium conducting heat from the surrounding rockwalls to the heat exchange tubes. This geothermal heat can be used for heating: mine facilities and buildings, the intake air, a close-by mineral processing plant, or even nearby communities. This paper investigates the possibility of extracting renewable geothermal energy from backfilled mine stopes by means of closed-loop geothermal cycles. To simulate realistic operational conditions a heat transfer model is developed and solved numerically. To evaluate the numerical results, a small scale physical model is constructed and the experimental results are compared with the simulation results. The study estimates the sustainable rate at which heat can be extracted from a typical underground mine stope, the resulting outlet temperature and performance of the geothermal system. The results show that mine stopes are capable of sustainably producing geothermal heat not only when the mine is active, but also after the depletion of the ore body. Therefore, an underground mine will no longer be perceived as an enduring economic liability, but as a long-lasting source of clean, renewable, and inexpensive low-grade geothermal heat.

The Mantaro Phosphate Property is located ~ 250 km east of Lima, Peru in the Andean altiplano near the city of Huancayo, Junin District. The Mantaro deposit is a mineralized zone of phosphatic rock currently defined by surface outcrops, trenches and drilling extending over a strike length of more than 30 km and a width of more than 5 km covering ~27,700 hectares. Mineralization is exposed as three roughly parallel exposures (?mantos?) trending in a northwest-southeast direction along the Mancaspico syncline. Estimated mineral resources1 contained in Manto 1 of the Property (4% P2O5 cut-off) as of February 21, 2010, are: Measured 5.548 million tonnes @ 10.8% P2O5 Indicated 33.975 million tonnes @ 9.9% P2O5 Measured + Indicated 39.523 million tonnes @ 10.0 % P2O5 Inferred² 376.265 million tonnes @ 9.0% P2O5 1Tonnes rounded to the nearest 1,000 and grade to 1 decimal place. 2Inferred material reported with no cut-off and an assumed grade. There is considerable potential to expand the resource base. Mantos 2 and 3 of the deposit have been geologically mapped and exhibit surface mineralization widths similar to Manto 1. Given that the deposit is of marine sedimentary origin, it is reasonable to infer that comparable grades and depth of mineralization are present within Mantos 2 and 3. Based on this assumption, the potential mineral deposits within Mantos 2 and 3 are estimated to be approximately: Manto 2 425-435 million tonnes @ 9% P2O5 Manto 3 280-290 million tonnes @ 9 % P2O5 These potential quantities and grade are conceptual in nature, there has been insufficient exploration to define a mineral resource and it is uncertain if further exploration will result in these targets being delineated as a mineral resource. However, should such conceptual resources be confirmed by trenching and drilling, the Mantaro Phosphate Property would rank as one of the most significant phosphate deposits in the world.

Placer mineral deposits may exist in the nearshore and shelf regions off western Canada. These deposits could contain gold, ilmenite or zircon as well as sand and gravel aggregate. Two deposit types typical of the British Columbia offshore are: (l) modem and relict gold/titanium beach deposits; and (2) reworked relict titaniferous shelf deposits. The preservation of drowned beach heavy mineral concentrations resulted from a rapid relative sea level rise across the shallow shelves approximately 10 500 years ago, particularly off the Queen Charlotte Islands. This same transgression submerged an outwash fluvial system that had been exposed for at least 3200 years, draining areas of known gold placers.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Ruttan Mine is located twenty-two km east of Leaf Rapids in northwestern Manitoba. The copper-zinc exhalative massive sulphide deposit is comprised of a series of individual and interconnected en echelon lenses which strike east 20 degrees north and dip south 70 degrees. The mine has been owned and operated by the Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Company since July 1987. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited began mining the orebody in 1973 from an open pit, but production has been entirely from underground since 1980. HistoryDuring the progression from open pit to underground mining, it was recognized that manual methods of ore reserve calculation were inadequate for responding to changing metal prices and evaluating alternative mine plans. The mine planning system that was developed is described in the paper, ""Computerization of Ore Reserves and Mine Planning Functions at Ruttan Mine"", presented by B.C.W. Haystead at the 1984CIM Annual General Meeting. At that time, programs for core logging, diamond drill hole plotting, grade interpolation, ore outline digitizing, and reporting had been developed by the Systems Department for use on Sherritt's UNIVAC 1100 mainframe computer. Telecommunications linked terminals at the Ruttan coreshack and office to the UNIVAC in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The same mine planning system was also used at a second property.Operation of the mine planning system was expensive, and it was evident that increased use required a costly upgrading of the UNIVAC in order to maintain an acceptable service level to all users. The system was re-evaluated,' and it was concluded that: core logging was not easily adaptable to a new property, nor flexible enough for exploration; plotting, grade interpolation, and digitizing required considerable manual effort; and that the UNIVAC operating system was difficult to learn.It was recommended that a study should determine if: core logging could be redesigned and/or implemented on a microcomputer; interactive graphics be used to reduce the effort for functions requiring visual interpretation; and the creation of input processors would assist users in setting up parameters for guiding the programs."

In this paper, we attempt to answer an often asked question, how can metal mining be compatible with the principles of sustainable development. Starting with the classic Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," we make the case that mining is or should be sustainable, using examples of sustainable practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated U.S primary copper producer. These examples cover the entire mining cycle starting with exploration, mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, closure and post-closure and post-mining land use. It is hoped that the presentation will challenge the mining industry to even greater innovation as future mineral development projects are planned.

"Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd.(SMM)'s Niihama Nickel Refinery(NNR) produces high quality Nickel cathode, Cobaltcathode and other by-products using hydrometallurgical refining process called “MCLE”(Matte Chlorine Leach and Electro-Winning). In 2005,NNR started to use nickel and cobalt mixed sulfide (MS) produced by one of the SMM’s subsidiaries Coral Bay Nickel Corporation(CBNC)’s HPAL plant in Philippines, although its main and the only raw material until then was nickel matte. With start-up of the second HPAL plant at Taganito in 2013, NNR expanded its production capacity of nickel cathode from 41,000 to 65,000 tpa and finally achieved its target in 2015 by producing 65,980 tpa. SMM developed the technologies to improve poor reactivity of MS and installed new facilities to cope with increased Cobalt and Sulfur production at that time. This paper describes the technical approach to increase MS treatment with high efficiency.INTRODUCTIONThe Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd.(SMM)Niihama Nickel Refinery(NNR) produces Nickel cathode, Cobalt cathode and other by-products using Matte Chlorine Leach and Electro-Winning (MCLE) process technology. SMM uses nickel matte and nickel & cobalt mixed sulfide (MS) as raw materials for the MCLE process. Table 1 shows typical composition of these raw materials. Nickel matte had been only raw material until 2005, and with start-up of Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) operation in the Republic of the Philippines, MS became major part of it. In 2009, when CBNC doubled its production capacity, NNR also expanded its plant capacity of electrolytic nickel from 36ktpa to 41ktpa, keeping an eye on the possibility of 65ktpa with oncoming SMM’s second HPAL in Philippines. Poor reactivity of MS was the prime concern at that time because our intention was to increase production with MS. Nickel extraction rate deteriorated with increasing usage ratio of MS in raw materials. To keep high nickel extraction rate under high ratio of MS, NNR developed a new leaching technology. Another concern arising from treatment of MS was Cobalt and Sulfur contents that are much more than those of nickel matte as shown in Table 1.NNR introduced new technology of solvent extraction process as to Co/Ni separation process in order to keep cost competitiveness instead of the conventional cobalt oxidation–neutralizing method. As to sulfur products, new sulfur productive facility was installed to improve the exposure to sulfur dust and the hot working conditions for workers. As a result of process development and installation of new facilities against the problem with MSusage,65 ktpa production was achieved in 2015."

This paper is aimed to confirm the possibility to excavate fractured rock masses by using EPB shields, even in presence of relevant water tables. This verification is based on laboratory test experiences carried out at TUSC laboratory of Politecnico di Torino, where the natural material is tested in order to verify the suitability of a certain conditioning technique in particular conditions. This is due to the fact that every case should be studied apart from existing studies on a certain rock type, as other factors such as fragmentation of the rock mass, natural water content and porosity of the rock can considerably influence the final result of the conditioning process. The most important aspects that allow to consider the conditioning of fractured rock masses as suitable are: possibility to create a plastic paste that can transmit the pressure at the front in a effective way; reduce the permeability of the spoil material in order to reduce the possibility of water leakage inside the chamber and eventually in the tunnel; verify the consistency of the conditioned material for the extraction through the screw conveyors and the belt conveyors. For this research an argillitic schistose rock mass, with some quartzitic and calcareous inclusions, has been studied by using different level of conditioning in order to verify the suitability of an eventual EPB excavation through this formation.

Levitation melting of metals is one of the emerging applications of magnetic and electric fields in liquid metal refining. The varying magnetic field generates induced current inside the metal droplet and leads to the Joule heating effect and Lorentz force against gravity. This contactless process can avoid contamination from the crucible and can be used to produce high-purity materials. Visualization of the levitation melting process is difficult, and thus generally investigated by mathematical modeling. In the present study, a three-dimensional mathematical model of metal levitation was developed using finite element method for proper understanding of the levitation process. The effects of harmonic magnetic field frequency, coils power input, and sample size on levitation nickel droplet were investigated. Temporal evolution of temperature fields were predicted directly though the model. Levitation and balance condition of the droplet were investigated as well.

"The Moa JV was formed in December 1994 as a 50/50 joint venture between Sherritt Inc. and General Nickel Company S.A. of Cuba. The joint venture consists of the mine and Pedro Sotto Alba processing plant in Moa, Cuba and the Corefco refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. Throughout its now nearly 23-year history, the Moa Joint Venture has faced a number of global, operational and process challenges. Global challenges have included high input costs such as for fuel oil and sulphur, as well as low nickel prices. Operational and process challenges have included increasing ore haulage distances, decreasing ore Ni + Co grades, and increasing ore impurity contents. For example, increases in impurities such as Mg and SiO2 in the ore result in increasing acid demand in leaching and decreasing solids content of preheated leach feed slurry, respectively. In spite of these challenges, the mixed sulphide production capacity from the Moa Joint Venture has increased from 12,500 to 37,000 t/y Ni + Co since 1994 by judiciously targeting expansion projects and by continuously performing process and operational improvements.INTRODUCTION The Pedro Sotto Alba high pressure acid leach (HPAL) plant at Moa Bay, Cuba has a long history (Maslenitzkiy, 1969; Chalkley, 1996; Carlson, 1960; Roy, 1961; Carlson 1961). The plant was constructed by Moa Bay Mining Company and started up in late 1959 after several years of process development by Freeport Nickel Company, including operation of a 10 t/d plant in Hoskins Mound, Texas and a 50 t/d plant in Port Nickel, Louisiana (Southwick, 2004), as well as development work by Chemical Construction Company (Chemico) to precipitate metal sulphides (Roy, 1955a; Roy, 1955b). The Moa plant had an original reserve of 50,000,000 t of ore, graded at 1.35 wt% Ni, 0.146 wt% Co, 3.70 wt% Si, 1.00 wt% Mg and 4.5 wt% Al. At original design rates of 2,000 kt/y of ore, the design capacity of the plant was around 25,000 t/y Ni + Co as a mixed sulphide product, which would be shipped to the Port Nickel Refinery in Louisiana for processing. In 1960, the plant changed ownership and was restarted in 1961 under Cuban management. Between 1961 and 1989, the plant was also supported by involvement from the former USSR, supplying spare parts and consumables. In 1994, Sherritt Inc. partnered with the General Nickel Co. S.A. of Cuba and formed the Moa Joint Venture. This joint venture includes the mine and Pedro Sotto Alba HPAL processing plant in Cuba and the Corefco refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. Under this partnership, ore is processed in Cuba to produce a nominally 55 wt% Ni and 5 wt% Co mixed sulphide product that is shipped to Canada and processed by Corefco to produce class 1 nickel, high grade cobalt and byproduct ammonium sulphate fertilizer."

"Recent amendments to the so-called ""flow-through share"" rules in our income tax legislation have given a new lease on life to this once popular investment vehicle.The original ""Dome funds"" for exploration in the Beaufort sea recognized the usefulness of flow-through share arrangements, but, by and large, flow-through shares have until recently not been able to compete effectively with other tax shelter instruments-mainly , limited partnership interests.This month, Tax Notes examines the new tax rules for investing in flow-through shares.IntroductionRecent income tax amendments have helped to rekindle investor and industry interest in so-called ""flow-through shares"" as a mechanism for mobilizing funds toward mineral exploration and development activities. In competing for investment funds, flow-through shares have historically placed a distant second in terms of investor popularity, being unable to compete with the more attractive features of limited partnership arrangements. However, primarily as a result of favourable changes to the income tax law, flow-through shares may be well poised for a comeback.This article examines the income tax considerations pertaining to issuing and investing in flow-through shares, and compares the former and the new income tax rules relating thereto. Of course, inasmuch as a flow-through share issue can involve various contractual arrangements between the investor and the issuer, there is a wide range of legal and business factors that generally have to be taken into account. A discussion of these matter s is beyond the scope of this paper, which is restricted to a summary of the special income tax factors attributable to flow-through shares."

"Most of the recent large discoveries of zinc, lead and silver in Western Canada are Paleozoic-aged stratiform deposits that occur within the limits of the tectonic sub-province of the Canadian Cordillera known as Selwyn Basin. Bounded on either side by coeval carbonate platforms. Selwyn Basin trends northwest for 1300 km from northeast British Columbia to Alaska. Paleozoic rocks of Selwyn Basin consist primarily of chert, shale and coarser-grained clastic sedimentary rocks with minor volcanic rocks.The Selwyn Basin deposits have few counterparts elsewhere in Canada, but have a close similarity in geological setting, mineralogy and morphology to well-known deposits such as McArthur (HYC) in Australia, Meggen and Rammelsberg in West Germany, and Sullivan in British Columbia. Recent studies of these deposits have led to an emerging, but now generally accepted, model of ore deposition in which stratabound zinc-lead-silver shale-hosted or ""sedimentary-exhalative"" (sedex) deposits are precipitated in active tectonic environments from metalliferous geothermal brines that rise to the sea floor along deep-seated fault zones. Although their mineralogy and ore metal zoning can be similar to that of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, most sedex deposits have only a weak genetic link with volcanism.Sedex mineralization in Selwyn Basin has been identified within three separate ages of shale or its metamorphosed equivalent. The lower Cambrian-age Anvil Camp in central Yukon Territory contains the only producing mine (Faro). Important lower Silurian-age zinc-lead mineralization is at Howards Pass along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border. Barite and zinc-lead-barite mineralization of upper Devonian age occurs across Selwyn Basin. Potentially economic deposits have been found at Macmillan Pass, along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border and in the Gataga District of northeastern British Columbia."

"Potentially economic stratiform barite-sulphide deposits have recently been discovered in Devonian basinal facies rocks of the Kechika Trough of northeast British Columbia. This new mineral district is over 180 kilometres long and includes nine major occurrences, namely Driftpile Creek, Bear, Mount Alcock, Cirque, Fluke, Pie, Elf, Kwadacha and Sika. The Cirque is the largest known deposit, with reserves of atleast 30 million tonnes averaging 10per cent combined lead-zinc and 47 grams per tonne silver. The footwall rocks for the Cirque and other strati/rom barite-sulphide deposits in the area are rhythmically bedded baritic and pyritic carbonaceous black shales, siliceous argillites and cherts of probable Mid to Late Devonian age. These siliceous rocks overlie a succession of proximal to distal turbidites which are the basinal equivalent of Early to Mid Devonian carbonate reefs to the east. The siliceous facies is overlain by deeper-water black shales of probable Late Devonian to Mississippian age.Preliminary stratigraphic and sedimentological investigations suggest that the strati/arm massive pyrite and bedded barite deposits formed in third-order euxinic basins within a northwest-trending structurally controlled trough which, in the southern part of the district, was bounded by carbonate reefs. The exhalative event, which appears to have been accompanied by synsedimentary faulting, took place during the early stages of a major eastward-directed marine transgression that was probably related to rapid crustal subsidence. Dewatering of metal-enriched shales and subsequent brine discharge along fault zones within the trough, with the exhaled brines accumulating in seafloor depressions, is the mechanism envisaged for formation of the deposits. Convective circulation systems may have been established about the more deep-seated faults, in response to elevated heat flow levels."
