Abstract This paper lists the interests of the Physical Metallurgy and Chemical Research laboratories of the Metallgesellschaft, which were visited by the authors, members of a group of Canadian investigators sent to Germany by the Department of Reconstruction in 1945. The Physical Metallurgy Research Laboratory The following information was obtained from Professor E. Schmid, Chief of the laboratories. It is understood that Dr. Schmid is a former Nazi and was to be removed from his post in November (1945). Aluminium Research The laboratories investigated the corrosion resistance of the high-strength aluminium-magnesium-zinc alloys. The same test procedure as used by V.L.W. was followed and Dr. Schmid co-operated closely with Dr. Brenner on this project. Intercrystalline corrosion was combatted by additions of chromium, titanium, or vanadium, and the work in this field parallels that of Dr. Brenner of V.L.W. * Dr. Schmid reports that Bollenrath and Siebert believe that corrosion difficulties with these alloys can be overcome to some extent by heat treatment. He himself was of opinion that the correct answer lay not only in correct alloying but also in correct heat treatment. The heat treatment involved either interrupted quenching or a change in quenching rate from a solution temperature of 500°C. The procedure is either a slower cooling from solution temperature or an interrupted cooling with a holding period at l50°C. Work had been done on piston alloys, the 11-13% Si, 1% Ni, 1% Cu, and 1% Mg being the favoured material. This is called Lo-Ex and is similar to Mahle 124 or KS1275.

Three types of reference gold catalysts, i.e., 3wt%Au/TiO2 (Au-Ti: Type A), and 0.3wt%Au/Fe2O3 on alumina beads (AUS: Type B), and 5wt%Au/Fe2O3 (Au-Fe: Type C), were produced in a test plant scale by Sud-Chemie Catalysts Japan, INC. under the licensing of AIST. To evaluate the validity of the preparation methods and conditions used for the reference samples, elemental analyses by ICP, particle size measurements by TEM, and catalytic activity measurements for the oxidation of CO and H2 over these catalysts were made. Gold catalysts can be prepared in a large scale of ca 400g for the Au-Ti and Au-Fe catalysts, 5 kg for the AUS catalyst with good reproducibility. It was confirmed that they were available for useful as the reference gold catalysts of World Gold Council.

Since its commercialization thirty years ago, the Recoflo® short bed ion exchange process has been extensively utilized for the recovery of a wide variety of acids and metal salts. In addition to a reduction in resin bed height from 200 cm to 300 cm to 15 cm to 60 cm, the process has a number of features such as utilization of fine mesh resins in a compressed bed which together make it ideal for a number of applications. The process has been extensively exploited, for example, in the metal finishing industry for recovery of valuable chemicals from electroplating, anodizing, etching and pickling wastes. More recently, it has also been applied in the primary metals industry for purification of copper electrolytes and metals recovery from leachates. The paper discusses several of these applications and some of the issues that were found to be key to their success.

"Environmental issues have evolved considerably over the last two decades. The main contributing factors, to name a few, have been the changing values of modern societies, the globalization of trade and its linkage to environment, evolution and accessibility of information/ communication technologies, better educated populations, climate change, longrange transport of toxics, and the increasing influence of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and multistakeholders.As well, environmental management of mining operations had to be realigned in order to meet these new realities and to respond to more elaborated regulations oriented towards sustainability. Environmental management systems (EMS) have been introduced not only to meet the assurance of conformance to regulations but also to prevent pollution and to apply the continuous improvement of mining processes. EMS models have been developed and certification to international standards (e.g. ISO 14 001) is a common practice.Globalization has imposed challenges and additional requirements to environmental management. Developing a mine in emerging countries implies dealing with international agencies, local communities, and a variety of government infrastructures to obtain a “license to operate.” This paper presents the structure of Cambior’s EMS and how it was adapted and implemented in the company’s operations in South America."

"To characterize noise and vibration sources of different types of mining equipment used in underground mining, the authors performed a study in eight Quebec mines on 28 pieces of equipment. This paper presents the procedure followed to select the equipment to be evaluated, and the low-cost acquisition system developed to perform multichannel time-domain data acquisition in harsh environments. It also presents the results obtained for the noise level produced by the equipment and for handarm and whole-body vibration exposures.RÉSUMÉ Dans le but de caractériser les sources de bruits et de vibrations de divers équipements miniers utilisés sous terre, les auteurs ont étudié 28 équipements dans huit mines du Québec. L’article présente la procédure suivie pour choisir les équipements à évaluer ainsi qu’un système multicanal à faible coût développé pour acquérir des données dans des environnements difficiles. The composition of phosphate rocks, mainly used in manufacturing fertilizers, varies among deposits; therefore, phosphate rocks from different sources are expected to behave differently in acidulation processes. This paper examines the effect of preconcentration of phosphate ore from El-Sebaiya East, Egypt, using flotation on uranium leaching. A high-grade ore sample (27.3% P2O5, 168 mg/kg U) supplied by the Al-Nasr Mining Company, was subjected to reverse single-stage flotation to separate carbonate from the phosphate sample. Subsequently, P2O5 and U concentrations were 32.2% (92.1% recovery) and 225 mg/kg, respectively. After the leach process, the U concentration in the liquor was 319 mg/L.

Gypsum scrap generated from wallboard manufacturing, construction and deconstruction activities in North America, Europe and Japan is a recognized environmental problem. Landfill disposal of this gypsum scrap is problematic, with deposits often creating hydrogen sulphide emissions and metallic sulphide groundwater leachates. Of these regions, Europe is the most advanced in dealing with the issue having enacted legislation, which will come into effect in July 2005 that will strongly encourage gypsum recycling throughout the EU. An estimated 10% to 17% of all gypsum used in the wallboard industry becomes recyclable scrap, which represents approximately 1% of the total waste stream in North America. In the United States, 2.5 to 4.5 Mt of gypsum scrap is generated each year; the volume is similar in Europe (the percentage of total tonnage is less because of the higher use of brick and concrete). The Greater Vancouver region of British Columbia has banned gypsum from its landfills, and as a result, all gypsum scrap is now recycled. New West Gypsum Recycling, a Canadian firm, uses its proprietary technology to process large quantities of gypsum scrap that is reincorporated into new wallboard, at percentages ranging up to 25%. The operation of New West Gypsum Recycling Inc. of Langley, Vancouver is examined as a case study and recommendations are provided as to how other urban regions can implement similar gypsum scrap recycling programs.

The equilibrium solubilities of gibbsite, Al(OH)3, and boehmite, A1OOH, have been extensively studied in our laboratory from 30 to 90°C, and 100 to 300°C, respectively, to ionic strengths of 5 mol.kg-1 (NaC1) over a wide range of pH. The resulting solubility constants have been treated with consistent empirical models that incorporate appropriate experimental data taken from the literature. These studies were initiated in part to understand and quantify scale formation in geothermal fields as a result of fluid re-injection from electric power generating plants. Most of the experimental results were obtained through application of a unique potentiometric method that allows for rapid, precise measurement of the in situ pH and allows the approach to equilibrium to be monitored from under- and super-saturation. The experimental program was extended to deal with more basic solutions (e.g., five molal NaOH), in which the dissolution of boehmite was measured for application to the refining of bauxite by the Bayer process. More recent results in strong caustic solutions at temperatures below 90°C were obtained to investigate the dissolution of aluminum-containing sludge from holding tanks at the Savannah River waste reprocessing site. In this case the solubility enhancing effects (kinetic and equilibrium) of triethanolamine were also established and quantified. Finally, potentiometric solubility experiments were conducted (50°C in 0.l mol-kg-1, NaCl) on aluminum alloy sheets to identify mainly the nature of the aluminum oxide/hydroxide surface layer formed under these conditions.

While the markets served by Canadian coal producers have changed and buying practices continue to evolve, the coal mining, or supply side, has also changed remarkably in response and now provides the basis for an interesting industry story.The dynamic situation in coal mining has led to some surprising outcomes and seemingly contradictory developments. This paper outlines the changes that have occurred, and which are still unfolding in Canadian coal mining, firstly, in terms of mining technology and productivity, secondly, in terms of corporate divestments, acquisitions and bankruptcies, and finally, in terms of resource development. The paper also outlines some plausible futures for the industry looking ahead."

Northern Australia has been home to uranium mining for over 70 years, more or less continuously. In the early days, post World War 2, there was little effort made to remediate workings at the end of operations. The three “campaigns” of uranium mining (1951-55; 1960-70; and 1979-present) are all now in various stages of remediation. This includes not only the large legacy site at Rum Jungle but also smaller fields like the South Alligator Valley, as well as contemporary works at Nabarlek and the ongoing closure at Ranger– Australia’s longest operating uranium mine. This paper briefly describes some of the past remediation activities before providing an update on the Ranger closure programme and future timetable.

"Competitive pressures dictate that the mining industry moves to larger mobile underground haulage equipment with more advanced equipment mechanization, higher levels of autonomous operation of machines, and longer periods between access by maintenance personnel. Since such new machines will of necessity be more complex than existing designs, machine reliability has become a key issue in progressing toward advanced mobile underground haulage equipment. Reliability and maintainability models of such equipment are practically non-existent in the literature. This paper addresses the issue of reliability and maintainability of mobile underground haulage equipment on two fronts: reliability modelling to enhance decision making for maintenance planning; and reliability simulation to enable evaluation of more rigorous production planning scenarios. A case study from a gold mine in the Chilean Andes is presented, for which reliability models of mobile underground haulage equipment, specifically load-hauldump vehicles and underground haul trucks, are developed, and a reliability-based simulation implemented. IntroductionMaintenance accounts for 20% to 35% of the overall operating budget for a typical underground operation, and hence represents the largest portion of the mine’s controllable operating costs (Cutifani et al., 1996; Campbell, 1997; Goddard, 1998). This paper presents the results of a research study that is being conducted by the Mine Effluents Program, Mining and Mineral Science Laboratory (MMSL), Natural Resources Canada aimed at evaluating biotechnology processes for the treatment of nitrogen compounds such as thiocyanide (CNS) and ammonia (NH4-N) which are present in gold mill effluents. A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) technology, commonly used for the biological treatment of municipal and industrial effluents, was used in this study. In the SBR process, the micro-organisms were able to degrade CNS to NH4-N and NH4-N to nitrate (NO3-N) at operating conditions of two 12 h treatment cycles per day, with pH maintained in the 7.4 to 7.6 range, and at room temperature (approximately 21°C) and also at 12 °C. The end products of CNS and NH4-N biological oxidation were NO3-N and sulphate (SO4) that are relatively non-toxic. Partial removal of NO3-N was achieved by biological denitrification reactions in the SBR process. The SBR process effluent was measured to be non-toxic to rainbow trout based on the 96 h acute toxicity test. The microbial consortium isolated from the SBR treating a simulated effluent was able to effectively oxidize CNS and NH4-N to NO3-N in water samples (under batch conditions) collected at three mine sites located in Quebec, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon.

"Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited is located at Joutel in North-Western Québec. The mine is about four miles north-west from the town on the left bank of the Harricana River. The present mining is 1,800 feet deep with an extensive geological development below this level.HISTORY The development of the ore body started sometimes in 1967 and then the operation ceased in 1969 and again reopened in 1973 due to higher prices of gold. During these periods of active development, a considerable metallurgical research has been done by different laboratories and research and design companies.The original capacities of the Mill differed as much as 30%. So did the concept of the ore treatment. The original design of the mill was for 200 TPD of ore with straight cyanidation. The problems with low gold extraction, high reagent consumption and poor filtration resulted in a decrease of the expected mill output to an initial 550 TPD with gold recoveries in the order of 40 to 60%.Although the studies and research work done on the ore varied, all of them had a common conclusion: a very fine grind is needed to expose gold. The mining method (sub-level blast hole mining) now provides the ore that differs from that on which the metallurgical test work was conducted and the original capacity calculations had been done.These variations in the concept consequently led to the conclusion that the size of gold is a determining factor for the process.Kilborn Engineering provided the original design with the Leslie Eng¬ineering completing the design. The metallurgical test work has been done by the Department of Energy, Mines & Resources, Lakefield Research of Canada, Kilborn Engineering and Sidam Incorporated.The new flotation section with secondary grinding has been designed and put into operation by the company in December 1975 with the results yet to be evaluated."

Control of the feed provided to mineral processing facilities is a continuing challenge. Much effort is currently being devoted to overcoming these problems. These projects are usually described under the general headings of Mine-to-Mill Integration or Mine-Mill Optimization. It should be possible to combine the knowledge of ore type, mineralogy, and other characteristics (located in the mine modelling system), with the advanced capabilities of state-of-the-art mill control systems, to achieve an improved level of control in mineral processing, allowing optimization of the mill processes on an almost realtime basis. This is not happening because mill feed it is often treated as a uniform material, when in reality it varies in composition and characteristics. The University of Utah is investigating the use of odor sensors for maintaining traceability in ore production and processing. Odor sensors now used in food processing, environmental monitoring, and other applications can detect the presence of very small amounts (0.1 - 500 ppm) of some molecules. An assortment of such molecules could be used to ?tag? blocks of ore as they are mined, according to their respective characteristics. Then, as the ore came into the mill, an array of ?electronic noses? could be used to assess its characteristics in real time.

"This paper presents the development of a new grinding circuit steady-state modeling system. It is fundamentally based on the “functional performance equation”, which has now been used to improve the performance of numerous grinding circuits. This equation characterizes the two distinct efficiencies that are at work in a ball milling circuit, and how these relate to overall circuit productivity. It does so based on the particle size chosen to distinguish between coarse and fine (product size) material. Now, by applying it to all the material size classes, a simple yet reliable ball mill model was created. Combined with cyclone recoveries, the complete, detailed grinding circuit performance can be exactly reproduced mathematically by the computer program. It can then be used with separate process equipment application engineering methods to systematically engineer grinding circuit improvements. The development, features, uses and limitations of the system are described.INITIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE CIRCUIT MODELThe Functional Performance Equation for Closed Circuit Ball (or Pebble) MillingIt has been shown that closed grinding circuit performance can be effectively characterized by the “functional performance equation” for closed ball or pebble milling circuits (McIvor, 2006a). One method of its derivation is summarized here for convenient reference.First select a cut-off size to define “coarse” versus “fine” or product size material for the grinding circuit. Any particle mesh size can be used to differentiate between coarse material and fines, but the circuit target P80 is often an effective choice for these purposes.Any energy expended on “fines” is wasted. It also generates “extreme fines” often detrimental to downstream processing (McIvor and Finch, 1991). Only the portion of the mill power draw that is expended on coarse material is effectively used. This portion can be estimated from the mill feed and discharge size distributions (McIvor, 1988a) by taking the average of the percentage of “coarse” material in the mill feed and discharge. We can define the thusly calculated percentage of the mill power that is expended on coarse material in the mill as the ball mill circuit “classification system efficiency” (CSEff). The “effective mill power” (EMP) can be calculated from the total mill power (TMP) as follows."

"The ISO 9000 Quality Management System Standards have become internationally accepted as the way to manage quality assurance. The author has developed a Maintenance Management System Standard using ISO 9001as a model and is working with a major basemetal mining company to implement this. This paper describes the structure of the standard and the steps required for its implementation.Using a management standard ensures that a system is maintained, reviewed by internal audit, and when instances of failing to follow the procedures (nonconformances) occur, that corrective action is taken. It also ensures that regular reviews are made and that the sys-tem is continuously improved.The Standard is designed so that if an organization decides to register to an ISO 9000standard, the Maintenance Management System will be in a format that is compatible and can be incorporated with little effort into the Quality System.IntroductionIn reviewing maintenance operations at many mining companies, and often seeing those same organizations some years later, two recurring issues have been noticed..The first issue is how dependent effective maintenance is upon individual supervisors and crews. In one situation, a mine that had an excellent maintenance system in the 1980s. Now, with new supervisors and crews, it is starting to develop a system that will bring it back to where it once was. No written procedures remain from the earlier excellent system.The second issue is that most operations feel that maintenance is the sole responsibility of the maintenance supervisors and crews. Nothing could be further from the truth. Maintenance, like safety, is everyone’s responsibility. If the operator does not report problems and perform daily checks, and if the production supervisor runs equipment until it fails, then nothing the maintenance crew does will prevent emergency breakdowns and lost production. More importantly, equipment will be operated in unsafe conditions, putting employees at risk and, with today’s regulations, leaving supervisors open to prosecution.The Maintenance Management System outlined in this paper is designed to establish the present best practices as standard procedures, to provide a continual review so that these practices are improved in the future, and to identify instances where the system fails so that corrective action is taken. The mine referred to above is using this approach to make sure that, this time, the system it implements will survive."
