In the course of work being carried out in the Lubricants and Bearings Section of the Council lor Scientific and Industrial Research on the production of copper4ead 'bearings for 'use in aircraft, it has been found necessary to develop special metallographic methods. For proper control of the production of steel-backed copper-lead bearings it is necessary to adhere to rigidly controlled conditions, and it is essential that a method of examination be adopted which will readily detect actual defects or any variations in quality. Some defects can be observed with the naked eye, whilst others are detected by radiographic examination. This latter method is invaluable as a rapid, reliable test in the production of aircraft bearings, but it is necessary to observe the structure of the alloys under the microscope, both to be able to interpret the radiograph correctly and to determine what has occurred to the metal during and after solidification. The use of a sound metallographic technique is'particularly important in developmental work and research connected with these bearings.Polishing TechniqueCopper and lead are practically immiscible in the solid state, but whilst they are miscible only in certain limited proportions in the liquid state; consequently "alloys" of copper and lead consist of a mixture of the constituent metals. The metallographic difficulties are obvious. Copper is a relatively tough metal, although it readily scratches, whilst lead is extremely soft and easily deformed. It wouId be expected if any normal polishing technique were applied that the lead would be readily torn out of the surface being prepared, and, in addition, that the lead would tarnish very easily.Grange(2) has described a method by which these difficulties can be overcome. The method involves an etch-polish procedure using "chrome regia" as an etchant for the copper. The chrome regia was a solution of chromium trioxide and hydrochloric acid in water. This type of etchant has been adopted, but it was found necessary to make certain changes.The method now adopted in this laboratory is as follows: The specimen (which is usually mounted in bakelite) is wet ground in a series of successively finer Hydro-Durexsil emery papers down to 60.0· grit paper.The specimen is then etched in the chrome regis, etchant (the composition of this etchant will pe discussed later) for approximately five seconds.Most efficient etching is obtained by swabbing the surface of the specimen...

Mineralogical analysis of a nickeliferous laterite from the Rockhampton region shows that the nickel is largely associated with the manganese wad and opaline silica. The laterite also contains an appreciable chromite content (about 12 per cent Cr2O,) although this tends to be poorly liberated.Leaching with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, at atmospheric pressure at the boiling point is non-selective with respect to iron dissolution.The degree of dissolution increases as the acid concentration and retention time are increased; cobalt dissolution requires less aggressive conditions than does the dissolution of an equivalent amount of nickel.Leaching with sulphuric acid at elevated temperatures and pressures leads to a minimum amount of iron dissolution, is rapid, and requires a reduced acid addition rate. Nickel and cobalt recovery from the clarified leachate would be simplified because of the leach selectivity.Pressure leaching appears to be the most practical route for treating the Rockhampton laterite. The economics of processing would be made more attractive by the recovery of a chromium concentrate from the leach residue. This would typically contain about 45 per cent Cr2O, and could be used as a source of chromium chemicals.

The treatment of a hydrobiotite containing 0·64 per cent copper with various soluHons showed that a high percentage (up to 90 per cent) of the copper can be extracted under mild conditions (1 M BCI, 85°C) or withsaline solutions (20 per cent by weight NaCI or NH4F, 400°C). The latter results suggest that the copper is incorporated in the interstratified vermiculite of a vermicuHte-biotite mica and the solutions (NaCl and NH4F) which reacted with the vermiculite without attacking the biotite gave the highest extraction yields.In general, extraction yields with saline solutions increased with the temperature (between 100 and 400°C) and duration (3 or 6 days) of the treatment but were not appreciably affected by the initial pH of solutions.The results of RCI treatment especially may have a bearing on the hydrometallurgical treatment of refractory copper ores where copper is tied to gangue silicates.

Gold-bearing veins have formed at a wide range of depths throughout the uplift history of the Otago Schist. The earliest gold mineralisation occurred during the later stages of Mesozoic metamorphism. This mineralisation was characterised by diffuse wall rock alteration with greenschist facies metamorphic or retrograde metamorphic mineral assemblages, and gold occurs in this altered rock. Quartz veins formed in .steeply dipping extensional fractures associated with this mineralisation type strike north to northeast. The Macraes mine exploits this deposit type. The present northwest strike of the mineralised zone at Macraes is a result of post-mineralisation deformation of the schistosity-parallel mineralised shear zone which hosts northeast striking extensional veins. This combination of schistosity-parallel shear zone and steeply dipping northeast striking veins may exist elsewhere in Otago, and this deposit type is most prospective. Steeply dipping quartz veins formed during post-metamorphic un-roofing of the Otago Schist strike northwest to west and occur as clusters of near-parallel structures in east and central Otago. These veins consist mainly of massive quartz, although some prismatic quartz occurs also. Breccia fragments in veins are common and these are generally silicified, with some gold. Wall rock alteration is negligible, and vein margins are sharp. A set of middle Tertiary veins occurs in northwest Otago. Most of these also strike northwest and dip steeply, but some strike northeast. These veins contain abundant ankeritic carbonate as well as quartz. The carbonate pervades adjacent wall rock as veinlets, but gold mineralisation is confined to veins. Quartz is commonly prismatic and vuggy, and contains gold, which is commonly coarse grained especially in silicified breccia zones. Associated veins contain stibnite. This vein type formed close to the paleosurface (>2 km). Mineralised veins in Marlborough currently strike northwest, but these have been rotated from northeast strike during Alpine Fault displacement of Marlborough from Otago. Some of these veins were formed under late metamorphic conditions and are similar to the north to northeast striking veins in Otago. As in Otago, this type should be considered to be most prospective if they have associated schistosity-parallel shears.

The following brief observations on the mineral composition of the Mt. Oxide copper ore are intended to supplement the geological description of that ore-body recently published by Blanchard (2).'" The Mt. Oxide copper mine is situated about 45 miles W.N.W. of Dobbyn, in the Cloncurry district of Queensland (Fig. 1). A representative suite of specimens from the mine was obtained through the kindness of Mr. P. B. Nye, Executive Officer of the Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia, and Mr. Jack Hall, the tributor of the Mt. Oxide mine. The specimens, as shown in Fig. 2, were nearly all from the sulphide zone, between the l04-ft. level and the 300-ft. level. The main constituents of ferromanganese slags are silicates of Mn, Ca and AI. Factors affecting the recovery of manganese from a low manganese content ferromanganese slag (about 16 per cent MnO) during acid leaching were studied. These included time, temperature, agitation, sulphuric acid addition, solid:liquid ratio and particle size. Agitation rates greater than 300 rev/min. leaching periods greater than 30 min and temperatures above ambient were found to have no effect on Mn recovery. Dissolution of Mn was found to be highly dependent on the amount of acid added.About 90 per cent of the Mn was recovered when 5·5 times the stoichiometric amount of acid was used. About 28 per cent of the Mn was recovered when the stoichiometric quantity of acid (with respect to Mn alone) was used. However, the recovery increased to about 75 per cent when the total stoichiometric requirement of acid with respect to Ca, Al, Mg and Fe as well as Mn was used for leaching. The extent of Mn dissolution also depended on the particle size of the slag. The percentage of Mn recovery (using 5·5 times the stoichiometric amount of acid) increased from about 60 per cent to about 92 per cent when particle size decreased from -36 +52 to -150 +200 mesh (B.S.S.). When the results of this study were compared with those in a previous study involv,ing the leaching of a high manganese content slag (containing about 40 per cent MnO) results were similar except that there was a gr-eater consumption of acid in the present case (i.e. low manganese content slag).

In late 1989, first-pass reconnaissance exploration delineated a 4km x 6km geochem- ically anomalous area centred 10km WNW of Kainantu in the Eastern Highlands Province at 6¦13'S and 145047'E. The area, named the Basangka prospect, lies between 2 200 and 2 400m asl. Interest in the area was prompted by a 14ppm Au assay of a silica-pyrite breccia float sample taken near Henkai village. The prospect was defined after several acid-leached silica- pyrite breccia and comb textured quartz float samples returned assays above lppm Au and relatively high Ag. Very encouraging and anomalous Au values were obtained from panned concentrates, despite the absence of visible Au colours. Several pan concentrates returned greater than 1mg Au and it is believed that the Au occurs as inclusions within iron oxides which were originally pyrite. In this early stage of prospect exploration, any Au value above 0.lppm in- 150# fraction stream sediments is treated as anomalous. Rock chips, panned concentrates and -150# fraction geochemistry all vividly define the areas of interest at Basangka.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Thomson Orogen is a large but poorly understood element of Queensland geology. Extensive cover conceals the Thomson Orogen at depth, thus limiting studies to a small number of surface exposures. Previous studies of the northern Thomson Orogen have been restricted to the largest of these exposures in the Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Less extensive exposures, including Mt McLaren in east-central Queensland, are largely overlooked and poorly documented. Fieldwork suggests that Mt McLaren is a west-tilted fault block of Thomson Orogen metasediments that are at least 2200 m thick. The substantial thickness of these sediments (which we have named the Mt McLaren Formation) and the consistent shallow marine facies throughout the block suggest deposition in an actively subsiding basin. Initial dating of detrital zircons places deposition of the Mt McLaren Formation in the Late Cambrian to Early Ordovician, allowing correlations with formations of similar composition and age in the nearby Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Both of these areas have a long history of mining and exploration for gold and base metals, suggesting that correlation of basement sequences across these areas could be beneficial for exploration models of the Thomson Orogen as well as for tectonic models of eastern Australia.CITATION:Lee, M, Verdel, C, Welsh, K and Oorloff, A, 2015. The large increase in secondary industries in this country, during the war and post war periods, has caused a shortage of capacity for the production of merchant bar.To overcome this shortage, an expansion of rolling mill facilities has been undertaken by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. A small, but modern, merchant mill has been erected at Kwinana in Western Australia and a strip and skelp mill is under construction at Newcastle. The latter mill will roll strip and skelp at present being rolled by the Newcastle 10 in. Merchant Mill, enahling this mill to concentrate on merchant bar production.The Kwinana mill was installed to supply the Western Australian market. This state has a small population (approximately 658,000) and is not at present highly industrialised. It was necessary, therefore, to design a mill which would be capable of producing a wide diversity of sections and could be expanded as the demand increased. To begin with capital expenditure had to be kept within reasonable bounds. The design work for this mill, with the exception of a few specialised items of equipment, was carried out at Newcastle.All design work for the Newcastle mill was carried out by the lVIorgan Construction Co. of America. Although initially intended for rolling flat. products, the designers were asked to make the mill as flexible as possible, so that should the market for flat products decrease, this mill with additional equipment could undertake the rolling of medium sized sections.

Based upon the previous work of Norman & Loeb, a method was used to assess the comparative wearing properties of ten different alloys being used, or being considered for use, as mill liners and grinding media at Mount Isa, The materials to be tested were obtained in the form of large diameter balls, and were run, along with the regular ball charge, in a large ball mill operating under normal grinding conditions. At selected intervals, the test balls were removed from the mill, weighed and identified, and their relative wear rates determined.INTRODUCTIONInformation in metallurgical journals, from local iron and steel foundries, and from various metal promotional organizations has suggested that the various alloy compositions available should be examined and assessed for possible use as milllfners and grinding media.Previous attempts at evaluation of recommended materials for these applications elsewhere, have usually involved the purchase of large quantities of grinding balls or complete mill liner sets, requiring running periods of up to two years or more. As well as being both a costly and lengthy procedure, the information obtained may be of little significance, due to changes in milling practice, and ore characteristics during the period of operation.To overcome these difficuities, a method was adopted based on the short time wear rate test recommended by Norman & Loeb (1949) and Norman (1957) in which all the materialsunder consideration are ·subjected·concurrently to the conditions of service.Previous calculations of wear rates have been dependent1. We have considered the following characteristics of the crust and upper mantle of the Pacific Belt: seismic wave velocity anomalies, mechanical stress and shear deformation rate fields, heat flow and the pattern of metallogenic provinces of the Belt. It has been noted that there exist certain .regularities in distribution of the above mentioned geophysical characteristics and metallogenic zones within the Belt, displayed by prevalence of the lithophile elements in the Asia-Australian part of the Belt, and of the chalcophile ones within the American part.

A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland û Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground subsection of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes operational. Support of the site's system continues from head office which is continually involved in development of SUMPS and issuing revision updates to sites. The users, as well as programmers, were mostly geologists and mining engineers. This helped to ensure rapid, successful implementation. The broad approach of this system was to use interactively the specialist skills and interpretative abilities of the user mining engineers and geologists with the data manipulation abilities of the computer. It is an integrated system which covers geological exploration, deposit modelling, mine planning and production scheduling. An important feature of the system is that the user has full interactive control over each function through a graphics terminal where applicable.

Davis tube tests were conducted on a Koolanooka magnetite iron ore sample, supplied by Kingstream Steel Ltd, to determine the optimum grind size, maximum iron recovery and the cleanness of the products from low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS). The ore sample contained 38.6 per cent iron, 37.8 per cent silica, 6.5 per cent magnesia and 0.54 per cent alumina. XRD and microscopic examination showed that the main minerals in the ore were amphibole (42 per cent), magnetite (39 per cent), and quartz (14 per cent). Amphibole, (Mg, Ca, Fe),Si8O22.2(OH), containing 50.3 per cent SiO2, 35 per cent FeO and 11.5 per cent MgO is the main gangue mineral in the ore, and about 30 per cent of the total iron in the ore is contained in the amphibole. Heavy liquid separation tests showed that it is very difficult to separate iron from silica by gravity separation to obtain a high quality iron concentrate. Three grind sizes were initially tested, ie 45, 38 and 20 ¦m. It was found that grinding to 100 per cent -38 ¦m (P80 of 29 ¦m) appeared to be the best option for liberating the magnetite from gangue minerals. The iron recovery to the LIMS magnetic product for the 100 per cent -38 ¦m sample reached 73 per cent and the iron content was 65 per cent. Further test work suggested that the optimum grind size was a Psu of 25 ¦m.

The material presented in this paper describes experimental work to determine the effect of variations in suction nozzle design upon inlet flow conditions. Four entrance profile shapes were examined under controlled conditions of slurry flow and it was found that the straight ended nozzles had consistently higher entrance losses than the straight taper or the ellipse, and that the circular arc profile nozzles were the most efficient. Subordinate considerations were the measurement of the quantities and the forces involved.As the work progressed, three distinct phases in the pattern of flow were apparent and the static pressures in each were carefully examined. An inlet zone was found to be unstable in changing boundary conditions, a transition zone was largely independent of slurry density and in a zone of stability the pressures were found to be directly related to the characteristics of the flowing pulp. In this zone pressure measurements were reproducible within ± 2 per cent regardless of changing boundary conditions.The effect of varying the "1" parameter of nozzles with a part circular entrance profile was examined and it was found that flow conditions approaching the ideal were obtained when the radius of curvature was between 0·40 and 0·550.

The project is within the Cajamarca province, 20 km north of the town of Cajamarca and 600 km north of Lima, the capital of Peru (Figure 1). The district encompasses an area of 120 km 2 and is centred on the 78030'west longitude and 7000' south latitude. The project lies at an elevation of 3400 to 4200 masl.

HYL developed a direct reduction process (DR) that does not require a reformer; it is called self-reforming process. Typically, direct reduction processes based on natural gas utilise a reformer unit to transform the natural gas into reducing agents (hydrogen and carbon monoxide). The reforming reactions are: CH4+H20-?3H2+CO CH4 + CO2 - 2H2 + 2CO These reforming units require a catalyst agent to promote the kinetics of the reforming reactions. The catalyst for these reactions is typically a metallic element such as nickel in a ceramic matrix; iron is also an excellent catalyst for the reforming reactions.

THE power requirements of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at Queenstown, Tasmania, have, since the inception of smelting operations in June) 1896, been derived continuously from the extensive forests in the watershed of the Queen River, adjacent to the works, the fuewoodbeing of good quality, mainly composed of myrtle or beech (Fagus Ounninghami), eucalypts, and manuka (Leptospermum ericoides). The country is very rugged and mountainous, indented by numerous ravines and gullies, and intersected by, many creeks, which are subject to periodical floods, under the influence of a heavy and persistent rainfall, which averages about 110 in per annum. The areas so far exploited aggregate a total of about42 square miles, and this denuded country gives promise of ultimately becoming very valuable pastoral ground for cattle-raising.
