The old De Beers mine, which lies northwest of Dutoitspan mine at Kimberley, was the mine which launched Cecil Rhodes (In his historical career. It was the nucleus of the De Beers Mining Co. Ltd., formed in 1880, which later became De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. Inactive for more than a half century, the De Beers Mine is being rejuvenated for a new era of operations. Both mines were on the Vooruitzicht farm owned by the De Beers brothers, who had bought it from the Orange Free State Government ten years previously for £50. Although the brothers sold it soon after the discovery of diamonds at Dutoitspan, they are remembered for having given their name to the foremost diamond mining company in the world. Diamonds worth nearly R180,000,000 have come from this ground, and more will be recovered when the mine is re-opened.

A description of the field apparatus has been published by D. G. Brubaker. Data from laboratory model studies of the in-line and broadside methods of operation are detailed. The conductor models include a single sheet conductor at several strike and dip angles and a schistose-type conductor. In addition, data on the effects of the strike length and of the depth of the conductor are presented for the broadside method of operation. All of the data show that the inclintion reverses direction over the top edge of dipping single sheet conductors. Differences between anomalies over conductors dipping between 90" and 30" are subtle,but flat-lying sheets can be readily distinguished from steeply dipping sheets. Schistose conductors are easily distinguished from single sheet conductors, and a procedure is given for determing the direction of schistosity. The depth of penetration under ideal conditions is 0.7 of the coil separation. In 1950, The New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) developed a lightweight apparatus for electromagnetic prospecting. A description of this apparatus has been published by D. G. Brubaker.1 It consists of a small, battery-powered vertical source coil and a direction-finding receiving coil. Source and receiver are kept a fixed distance apart and move as a unit along the survey lines. At each receiver station the inclination of the magnetic field created by the source is measured. Two methods of operation are used, in each of which measurements are taken with a constant source-to-receiver distance and with the plane of the source oriented to pass through the receiver station. In one procedure, called the in-line method, source and receiver travel in tandem along the same line. In the other procedure, called the broadside method, source and receiver move along adjacent lines, with the source-to-receiver direction oriented parallel to the assumed strike direction. The data recorded in either case are the inclinations, measured in degrees from the horizontal, of the magnetic field created by the source. These data are plotted at the receiver stations on a map. Scale-model studies of both methods of operation have been conducted in the laboratory and are reported in this paper. APPARATUS Small source and receiving coils wound with many turns of fine copper wire were used to produce and measure an alternating magnetic field in the same manner as the field apparatus. The model source coil was mounted in a vertical position and oriented so that the receiving coil was in the plane of the source. The receiving coil was mounted in a frame so it could be rotated to obtain the inclination measurements. The source coil was excited by a 100-kc signal generator. A tuned amplifier and a voltmeter were used to detect the null position of the receiving coil. The coils used in the field apparatus are usually spaced about 400 ft. The coils used in the model work were spaced from 4 in. to 4 ft apart. Thus the scale of the model work ranges between 1/1200 to 1/100 natural size. The model conductors were aluminum-coated building paper supported on wooden frames. The conductivity-thickness product was measured using a four-electrode system and was found to be about 300 ohms-'. CONDUCTIVITY CONSIDERATIONS The electromagnetic response from a thin sheet conductor is a function of the product of the conductivity of the sheet times the thickness of the sheet times the frequency of the alternating electromagnetic field times some linear dimension of the system such as the coil separation which indicates scale. The secondary electromagnetic field produced by the conductor increases in amplitude from zero at zero conductivity to a maximum value for infinite conductivity, while the phase of the secondary field with respect to the primary field shifts from 90" at zero conductivity to 0" at infinite conductivity. Several authors2-' have shown that most of both the increase in amplitude and the change in phase of the secondary field takes place over a three-decade range of the conductivity-thickness-frequency product. During the latter part of the year 1931, the Republic mine of the Republic Steel Corporation, at Republic, about 4 miles south of Brownsville, Pa., was mining coal along four rib or fracture lines. One of these lines, the west butt rib line, was retreating towards a concrete-lined air shaft, 320 ft. deep, which had been sunk in 1911 for ventilation purposes. With the normal rate of mining at that time, it was expected that this rib line would pass the shaft in three or four months and the shaft would then be abandoned and allowed to cave. Realizing the opportunity presented for the study of an unusual case of ground movement, the question of conducting the study was presented by the junior author to thechairman of the Institute's committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence, Mr. George S. Rice, who presented the matter to Mr. G. H. Morse, General Manager of the Northern Mines, Republic Steel Corporation, and he agreed to cooperate with the Bureau of Mines in making the study, the results of which arc presented in this paper. John M. Cairns, in an interesting letter dated June. 19, 1918, tells us of his experiences in Italy. He says, "It may interest you to know I came out to Italy after being on the Afghan frontier of Indian Baluchistan, in August last year, and for some time was posted at Turin as Railway Transport officer. At that time Turin was in the toils of the riots which were the forerunners and preliminaries which led up to the great Italian retreat (Capretto). Since then I have been all over Italy from (deleted by the censor) in Transportation intelligence, and now have just been transferred to the Directorate of Requisitions and Hirings, which now permits great opportunities of going nearly all over Italy (deleted by the censor). GRaphitization phenomena occurring in solid cast iron have principally been studied from the angle of the reactions taking place during annealing of white castings in the manufacturing of malleable iron. The selected bibliography at the end of this paper presents the high spots of the published information in this field. Graph-itization of gray iron upon reheating has received much less attention, primarily because only on rare occasions is this material subjected to any kind of industrial heat-treating. Moreovcr, articles made from gray iron are seldom used commercially at temperatures when any graphitization can take place. When used in such conditions, it is assumed that the articles can be replaced at frequent intervals, which can be afforded because of the low cost of gray iron. However, there is at least one commercial process in which articles made from gray iron, during their manufacturing processing, are subjectcd to rather high temperatures; that is, manufacturing of cast-iron enamelware, which is glazed at about 1600° to 1700°F. (870' to 930°C.) From practical experience, it has been found that one of the convenient and economical compositions of gray iron suitable for enameling is, in round figures, as follows: Si, 2.50 per cent; Mn, 0.35; S, 0.07; P, 0.80; T.C., 3.35; C.C., 0.70. Since this iron usually is cast into thin-walled sections, the percentage of com- bined carbon in it is relatively high. Upon heating in the enameling furnaces, this combined carbon graphitizes, which causes permanent dimensional changes of the articles. Obviously, from practical considerations, it is desirable to maintain these dimensional changes as constant as possible. In the course of experimentation with this iron, two series of experimental heats were prepared in which the manganese to sulphur ratio of the standard cupola metal was offset by ladle additions of: (I) progressively larger amounts of sulphur, and (2) progressively larger amounts of manganese. Each one of these ladle charges was cast into experimental plates 8 by 4 in. and about 5/16 in. thick. All told, 13 ladle charges were thus treated. All of them are listed in Table I, together with their chemical analyses. It may be noted that the manganese to sulphur ratio in these samples ranges between 1.2 and 30.2. Every one of these compositions was subjected to thermal allalysis, using an automatic, self-recording differential dila-tometer. The specimens used in this instrument are 50 mm. long and 4 mm. in diameter. During the dilatometer cycle they are kept under a vacuum of about 3 microns. Each one of them was subjected to a thermal cycle by heating it to I830°F. (1000°C.) in 3 hr. and cooling to room temperaturc in 5 hr. Figs. The binary system lead-antimony has been the subject of comprehensive investigations in these laboratories by Dean1 and his associates. The effect of a third constituent on this system, particularly on the lead-rich alloys in which dispersion hardening was found, has a commercial value as well as an academic interest. This paper covers the effect of the addition of copper, bismuth and tin, all of which are likely to be found in commercial lead-antimony alloys, and is divided into three parts, as follows: I. The System Lead-A~ili~r~ony-Copper II. The System Lead-Antimony-Bismuth III. The Lead Corner of the System Lead-Antimony-Ti11 These three systerrls are of three different types, and hence may be considered as covering three general kinds of additions. Bismuth forms no compounds with either lead or antimony and forms solid solutions with both. Copper forms several compounds with antimony as well as solid solutions but with lead it forms a two liquid layer system and no appreciable solid solution. Tin is soluble in both lead and antimony in the solid state and also forms a compound with antimony. The effect of small amounts of bismuth on the lead-antimony alloys is small, having no appreciable effect on the solubility of antimony. The temperature of the solidus floor is lowered appreciably by the presence of bismuth, cutting down the range of heat treatment. Copper, on the other hand, due to compound formation, increases the apparent solubility of antimony. The excess antimony is tied up with the copper finally and so is not available for dispersion hardening. The net result of addition of small amounts of copper is to shift the dispersion hardening peak of the

IN other countries, research involving testing in various phases of ground movement and lessening its damaging effects, as by roof control, is going on more intensively than in this country, as evidenced by official mining papers and general articles appearing- in .Great Britain, Germany, France, and South Africa. One most important bulletin, "Some Aspects of Deep Level Mining on the Witwatersrand Gold Mines with Special Reference to Rock Bursts,"' was published by the Association of Mine Managers of the Transvaal, Johannesburg, under date of June, 1933, though not received in this country until 1.934. Since the deepest mining in the world is being done on the Rand-several mines over 7000 ft. deep and the Robinson mine 8000 ft.-the studies made are of intense interest to all mining men who have to deal with heavy ground pressure. In the discussion following the papers differences of opinions are shown on a number of problems; for example, on the ade¬quacy of sand-filling to prevent rock bursts and whether compressible or rigid artificial supports are best; also whether pressure bursts are due to the doming of strata and collapse of a lag of the dome or to induced shear cracks in the hanging wall. The problem of obtaining some means of warning of an impending rock burst led to testing with height indicators to find whether warning might be obtained by the lessening of distance between hanging wall and footwall. The indicators used are similar in idea but not in detail to the "convergence recorders" developed by the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain for their roof-control studies in coal mines. Success at several Rand mines is claimed in that indicator records give some degree of warning when the lessening of height is rapid, although, on the other hand, when this happens bursts do not always occur.

Introduction The commercial use of ion exchange resins to recover uranium evolved in the decade following 1950 when significant efforts were made to recover this vital element economically and efficiently from low grade ores. It was discovered that in both acid and alkaline systems, uranium exists as an anionic complex. This led to the application of anion exchange resins to concentrate and purify the uranium product. While this is the simplest statement of what an ion exchange resin does in the recovery of uranium, it should not be forgotten that the industry is continuing to evolve new methods in mining and processing which affect ion exchange operation. The inception of solution mining, the use of expanded bed ion exchange columns and the development of continuous ion exchange systems represent several examples of this continuing evolution in the industry. Throughout all of the changes in equipment designs and variations in solution compositions, the purpose of the ion exchange resin remains the same - to concentrate and purify uranium. Ion Exchange Resins When evaluating ion exchange resins for a uranium recovery project, the task that faces the chemist or process metallurgist is an assessment of the efficiency and, therefore, the economics of the various candidate resins for a given project. This assessment should include consideration of both physical factors such as particle size, density, hydraulic expansion and pressure drop as well as chemical factors such as the uranium loading and elution characteristics. For any given application, the differences in the physical and chemical behavior of ion exchange resins are a function of the conditions used to manufacture those resins. Therefore, an understanding of the way in which manufacturing variables affect resin behavior is important. Since most uranium recovery projects are concerned with recovery of the anionic complexes of uranium using anion exchange resins, this discussion will be restricted solely to the family of anion resins. The majority of the ion exchange resins used in commercial recovery operations look similar to the resins shown in Figure #1. [ ] Most of these materials are based on a styrene- divinylbenzene copolymer. The liquid monomers, styrene and divinylbenzene, are charged to a co-polymer reactor containing water. The water insoluble monomers are then mixed with the water to suspend oil-like droplets of the monomer mixture in. the water. The entire reaction mixture is then heated causing the monomers to polymerize into sol id thermoset plastic spheres. The spherical nature of the particle, the particle size distribution and the primary crosslinking level are fixed in this step in the production process. A recently developed system for measuring electrical resistivity of liquids without use of electrodes offers some interesting possibilities in electric logging technology. The equipment as supplied by the manufacturer is satisfactory for continuous mud logging on a drilling rig or for measuring mud or filtrate resistivity in the laboratory. A simple modification of the commercially available instrument makes it suitable for measuring resistivity of core samples in the laboratory. The continuous measurement of mud resistivity on a drilling rig is a convenient means for detecting mixing of formation water with the drilling mud. Such information is useful to the geologist, the mud engineer and the logging engineer. However, continuous mud resistivity logging by conventional electrode-type resistivity cells is beset with difficulties. The mud, sand and rock chips abrade the electrodes, thereby changing the cell constant and eventually destroying the cell. Also, additives and crude oil in the mud may poison the electrodes by coating them with a nonconductive material. An electrode-type resistivity cell. therefore, may give erroneous readings under certain conditions. Electric logging companies circumvent the electrode poisoning problem by using a four-electrode resistivity cell for measurement of mud resistivity. In this cell, change in electrode area does not change the cell constant. However, the four-electrode cell is difficult to adapt for continuous reading and does not solve completely the problem of electrode abrasion by the sand and cuttings in the mud. The measurement of electric logging parameters on core samples in the laboratory encounters some of the same problems discussed in connection with mud logging. Ideally, the electrical resistivity of a core sample should be measured by placing platinum black electrodes in direct contact with the plane ends of a cylindrical or rectangular sample. Platinum black electrodes however, are much too fragile and easily abraded to be brought in contact with a rock sample. Also, oil or other constituents in the fluid contained in the sample will poison platinum black. In practice, gold-plated brass electrodes, in an AC bridge circuit operating at about 1,000 cps, are used for routine core analysis. For more precise work in research studies, a four-electrode scheme is used.',' Preparation of the samples for the four-electrode method is much too involved for routine core analysis. An apparatus for measuring resistivity of liquids without use of electrodes was described by Guthrie and Boys3 in 1879. They suspended a beaker, containing the electrolyte, by a torsion wire and rotated a set of permanent bar magnets around the vessel. The eddy currents induced in the electrolyte reacted against the rotating magnetic field to develop a torque, which was measured as a deflection of the torsion wire. In 1879 this method could not be made precise or convenient because of the lack of strong permanent magnets. The writer described a very greatly improved apparatus similar to that of Guthrie and Boys, but it was not suitable for continuous measurements or core samples.' Many electrodeless resistivity devices using radio frequency current are described in the literature.5, 6 These generally are suitable only for noting the end-point in a chemical titration. They do not measure resistivity, instead measuring a complex quantity which includes the dielectric constant and the magnetic permeability. The first description of the apparatus to be discussed in this paper was given by Relis.7 Improvements and modifications are described by Fielden,s Gupta and Hills,> and Eichholz and Bettens.10 DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS The apparatus used in this study is based on the principle that the solution under measurement can form a loop coupling two transformer coils, as shown in Fig. 1. For a fixed AC voltage applied across Coil A, the voltage appearing across Coil B is a function of the resistance of the liquid-filled loop. The details of the voltage generating and measuring circuits are given in Refs. 7, 8, 9 and 10. A block diagram of the equipment is given in Fig. 7. Special features worth mentioning are the operating frequency of 18,000 cps and the automatic temperature compensation which results in the given resistivity readings being automatically correlated to 25°C. The liquid loop supplied by the manufacturer, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, was modified for use in core analysis (Fig. 3). The core sample under test is substituted for a section of the original loop. As shown in Fig. 3, the unit accepts only plastic-mounted cylindrical core specimens. A Hassler-type sleeve easily can be designed for the unit if unmounted cores are to be measured. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE MUD LOGGING A simulated mud line was set up in the laboratory.

The Kolar gold field has been for a long time the most important gold-producing area of India. It is situated in the Skate of Mysore, southern India, and not far from the City of Bangalore. The productive field is about 3 miles long and in it a gold-bearing quartz vein varying in width from 1 in. to over 10 ft. is worked. The vein carries high values to great depths and many of the mines have paid large dividends. Geological Formations In KolaR Region The rocks of the Kolar region are pre-Cambrian in age and bear a close resemblance to some of the pre-Cambrian formations of America. The oldest rocks seen are basic lavas, now mostly altered to hornblende-schists, with which is associated some banded iron-formation; these rocks are similar to the Keewatin schists and iron-formation in the Lake Superior region. The schist is cut by the gold-bearing quartz vein. In certain parts of the area there is also a conglomerate containing pebbles of granite, jasper, and schist. The matrix resembles a hornblende-schist and is intruded by small granite dikes, which in some cases have been pinched off by squeezing of the rock. This has led Dr. W. I?. Smeeth, Chief Inspector of Mines of Mysore, to whom the writer is greatly indebted for information regarding this area and for his hospitality while visiting the field, to regard this conglomerate as a breccia due to crushing of granite dikes in the schist. Dr. J. W. Evans has regarded the conglomerate as probably a squeezed glacial boulder clay. From analogy with pre-Cambrian conglomerates in America, the writer regards it as a metamorphosed rock similar to our basal Huronian conglomerate. However, the main bearing which it has upon the problem under discussion is the apparent fact that it is younger than the schist and that it indicates the presence of a syncline in the rocks cut by the quartz vein. Surrounding the area of schist and conglomerate is a large mass of granite-gneiss resembling the Laurentian gneiss of the Lake Superior region. Still later than the rocks mentioned above are basic intrusions which cut the quartz and schists; in the mines these are known as trap. One dike of this type is 50 to 60 yd. wide.

The presence in the Tennessee Valley of extensive deposits of olivine, a silicate of magnesium and iron that contains approximately 28 per cent magnesium, has been recognized since 1896 when Lewis8 published a survey of basic magnesium rocks of western North Carolina. A recent field survey by T.V.A.7 showed that more than two hundred million tons of high-grade olivine occurs above local drainage levels in western North Carolina and northern Georgia. Except for sporadic attempts to work the olivine for its nickel and chromium contents,10 the ore received little attention industrially until 1926 when Goldschmidt3 suggested its use in the manufacture of refractories. Only one instance is recorded of an attempt to utilize the ore commercially for its magnesium content;" in this case a process was used in which olivine was treated with sulphuric acid, the resultant mixture was leached with water, and the leach solution was purified and evaporated to form epsom salts, which was the end product. As a part of its program of contributing to the development of the natural resources of the region, the Tennessee Valley Authority became interested in the olivine deposits as a source of metallic magnesium because of their high magnesium content and proximity to hydroelectric power. Studies were undertaken to determine the feasibility of producing magnesium chloride by extraction of olivine. The experimental work was carried out successively at the T.V.A. Minerals Testing Laboratory, Norris, Tenn., at the Georgia State Engineering Station,* Atlanta, Ga., and at the T.V.A. laboratory at Wilson Dam, Ala. The present paper describes a process. developed through the pilot-plant stage, whereby magnesium chloride suitable for reduction to metallic magnesium can be prepared from olivine by extraction with hydrochloric acid and subsequent purification. Research on the magnesium-from-olivine process, originally intended for peacetime use, was given impetus by the shortage of magnesium that existed at the beginning of the current world war. By the time the process was sufficiently developed to justify a proposal for its inclusion in the war program, the shortage had been met by expansion and development of other processes. However, it is believed that the magnesium-from-olivine process may have advantages that will warrant consideration of its use after the war, when the economics of the various processes rather than production on a wartime scale will be the criterion for commercial production of magnesium. This plant was built in 1907 at the Bankhead mines to manufacture briquettes by the Zwoyer process under license from the Zwoyer Fuel Co., of New York, N. Y. The building was constructed to contain two units, each of a capacity of 10 tons per hr.; one unit was installed at the time the building was constructed, and the second unit is now being built. The coal used is an anthracite, which is more friable than that of Pennsylvania, and, as a consequence, a larger percentage of dust or waste is produced, which was formerly thrown upon the slack-pile as waste, but is now passed to the ? dust-bin " in the breaker, from which it is conveyed to the briquette-plant.

The thermodynamic properties of liquid Mg-Ge alloys have been determined between 1000°and 1500°K by an isopiestic method. Germanium specimens, heated in a temperature gradient and contained in covered graphite crucibles of special geometry, were equilibrated with magrtesium vapor in closed titanium tubes. The crucible design allowed free access of magnesium vapor to the samples during the equilibration to form alloys of magnesium and germanium, but prevented magnesium losses from the crucibles on quenching the titaniuin tubes to terminate the experimental runs, thus preserving the equilibrium alloy compositions. The activities and partial molar enthalpies of magnesium and the integral thermodynamic properties of the system were calculated from the experimental data. THE Mg-Ge phase diagram' shows one congruent melting compound, Mg2Ge, of essentially stoichio-metric composition, two eutectics, and very limited terminal solid solubilities. Very little information is available on the thermodynamic properties of the Mg-Ge system. The free energy of formation of Mg,Ge was recently deter-mined2 by a Knudsen cell technique in the temperature range 610° to 760°C. The standard enthalpy of formation of Mg,Ge was measured calorimetrically by Bever and coworkers.3 The present study was undertaken as part of a general investigation of the thermodynamic properties of the homologous series of Mg-Group IVB systems, i.e., Mg-Pb,4 Mg-Sn,5 Mg-Ge, and Mg-Si. An isopiestic technique was used which was developed by the authors5 for investigating the thermodynamic properties of liquid Mg-Sn alloys. Specimens of the nonvolatile component, contained in covered graphite crucibles, are heated in a temperature gradient in an evacuated and sealed titanium reaction tube, and equilibrated with magnesium vapor of known pressure. The method employs crucibles of special geometry which preserve the high-temperature equilibrium composition of liquid alloys having a highly volatile component such as magnesium on termination of the experimental runs by quenching the crucibles to room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE First reduction germanium of 99.999+ pct purity (Eagle-Pitcher Co., Cincinnati, Ohio) and 99.99+ pct magnesium metal (Dominion Magnesium Ltd., Toronto, Canada) were used. The graphite crucibles were machined from high-density (1.92 g per cu cm) graphite rods (Basic Carbon Corp., Sanborn, N.Y.) which had a maximum ash content of less than 0.04 pct. The non-reactivity of graphite with germanium at the temperatures used in this study had been previously established by Scace and Sleck.6 The experimental procedure has been previously described in detail.5 The selection of a particular crucible geometry for a run was determined by a combination of imposed experimental conditions, the principle being that more tightly covered crucibles were required to preserve alloy compositions during quenching when higher magnesium pressures and higher specimen temperatures were used. Depending upon the composition range of the equilibrated alloys the source of the magnesium vapor was either pure magnesium or a two-phase mixture of Mg2Ge + Ge-rich liquid of known magnesium pressure. The experimental runs can be divided into the following three groups on the basis of crucible geometry and magnesium source material. Crucibles with Small Holes and Pure Magnesium Reservoirs. The crucible dimensions were identical to those of the Mg-Sn investigation5 except that the hole diameters were reduced to 0.010 in. because of the higher temperatures and higher magnesium pressures involved in the Mg-Ge system. During an equilibration run, magnesium vapor diffused from the reservoir to each specimen through the small holes, one drilled through the crucible lid and two others drilled through graphite baffles positioned vertically inside the crucible between the lid hole and the specimen. Since the magnesium pressure was high, i.e., in the range 117 to 277 Torr, during the equilibration time of approximately 24 hr, equilibration was not impeded by these holes. A specimen composition at equilibrium was fixed by the relative temperatures of the specimen and the reservoir, and by the thermodynamic properties of the system. Upon brine quenching the titanium reaction tube to end a run the vapor pressure of magnesium above the liquid alloys decreased exponentially with decreasing temperature, and the small cross-sectional areas of the holes (4.9 x 10"* sq cm) drastically reduced magnesium losses from the crucibles. Because of its low vapor pressure, germanium losses from crucibles during a run were at most 0.2 mg for pure germanium and correspondingly less for the alloys. This crucible geometry satisfactorily retained the equilibrium alloy compositions on quenching for magnesium-rich (from 3 to 33 at. pct Ge) alloys provided their temperatures were below the melting

It is general practice to evaluate the strength properties of a particular metal from its stress-strain (s1 — el) curve obtained by means of a conventional tension test. Such a stress-strain curve, Fig I, illustrates two important properties of a metal, its ability to strain harden, and its ability to withstand a certain limiting stress, the "fracture stress," (s), and a certain limiting strain, the "ductility" (es), before it fails by separation. These two fracturing characteristics are the coordinates of the point of fracture in Fig I. In the case of a metal which necks in a tension test, both the fracture stress and the ductility (measured in a tension test) are dependent upon (I) the shape of the neck and (2) average values of the stresses and strains over the cross-section at the moment of fracture. However, for the pur. pose of this investigation, these average quantities, rather than the actual values, may be considered for reasons of simplicity. It appears that the conclusiom also hold true if the analysis were carried out for actual values of fracture stress and ductility at the locos of failure. In this paper, the effects of straining (at room temperature) by various methods on the above metal characteristics, which were determined by subsequent tension tests will be discussed. According to Our present knowledge, any such prestrainitlg results in a stress-strain curve (in subsequent testing by tension), Fig 2, the general shape, or flow characteristics, of which can be derived from the original stress-strain curve of the unstrained metal minus a certain portion exhausted by the initial straining. This phenomenon is called strain hardening, and may be measured by the magnitude of the cut-off, or the "effective strain,'' from which the new curve must start in order to coincide in its plastic branch with the original stress-strain curve.

The influence of the early stages of precipitation on the kinetics and structure of martensite formation in Fe-27Ni and Fe-29.5Ni alloys containing from 0 to 10 pct Ti was examined with X-ray and electron microscopy techniques. The formation of a coherent, ordered preprecipitate had a profound stabilizing effect on the austenite. The Ms was decreased by increased titanium content and aging time up to a critical time. When the critical aging time was exceeded, the Ms was observed to increase markedly. The formation of the clusters was insuppressible and the volume fraction of clusters formed during the quench was a function of the titanium content. Martensite resulting from transformation of the clustered austenite is tetragonal with the c/a ratio increasing with titanium content. A model for the tetragonality is suggested. The morphology and substructure of the m artensite is inter-preted in terms of the above information and the cur-rent models of twinned martensite. ThE ramifications of precipitation in austenite to the properties of austenite have been the subject of numerous investigations. The current research is concerned with the influence of precipitation in austenite on the kinetics and structure of subsequent marten-site formation. In a previous investigation, Abraham et al.1 followed the aging reaction in an Fe-29.5Ni-4.2Ti* (at. pct) alloy using an X-ray diffraction technique. This technique, employing a Guinier camera, provided kinetic measurements through observation of the side band position as a function of aging time. The salient results of this work were: 1) The initiation of precipitation was not suppressed by quenching, i.e., there was a finite cluster zone size at zero aging time; and 2) The hardness of the aged austenite correlated extremely well with the zone size. During the previous work it was noted that the mar-tensite formed after aging was tetragonal, substanti-ating an earlier observation.2 Systematic investiga-tion revealed that the martensite was tetragonal in both the solution-treated then quenched, and the solu-tion-treated, aged, and quenched condition, and, furthermore, that a marked stabilization of the austenite occurred as a function of aging time. The present work is concerned with documenting the tetragonality and the stabilization phenomena as well as the ob- served microstruction with a suggested rationale for the behavior noted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The compositions of the alloys are listed in Table I. The analyses were performed after the solution treatment of the strip material. Nickel was determined using the standard dimethy1-glyoxime procedure whereas titanium was determined colorimetrically with hydrogen peroxide and volumetrically by titrating with ferric iron. The materials were melted in a 5-lb vacuum induction furnace, cast into 2-in.-diam ingots, and forged in a temperature range of 950. to 1200°C to 1/2-in. slabs. The three higher titanium containing materials cracked during forging; therefore, to get the alloys into strip form, slices 1/8 in. thick were cut from the slab, homogenized 4 hr at 1150°C, then cold-rolled to a 0.04-in. thickness. The remaining slabs were hot-rolled, homogenized 4 hr at 1065"C, then cold-rolled to a final thickness of 0.03 in. All of the heat treatments were performed under a protective atmosphere of argon. The Ms temperature for most of the alloys is below room temperature; therefore, it was possible to solution treat, quench to room temperature, polish, and then observe the transformation optically on a cold-stage microscope. To determine the effect of aus-tenitizing temperature on Ms, eight of the alloys were treated at two temperatures, 1025" and 1120°C. No measurable variations in Ms were noticed. The remaining alloys were treated at 1025°C. The specimens, : by 5/16 by 0.03 in., were austeni-tized in a vertical tube furnace under a dynamic argon atmosphere. The bottom of the tube was submerged in water for quenching purposes. The question of stabilization that may be operating at room temperature was investigated and found to be negligible. Geophysical methods of prospecting taken as a whole do not seem to offer much promise to a young man planning to enter them in the future. They have come to stay, to be sure, and they will continue in at least moderate use for a long time. Domestic use of those methods presumably is at a maximum at the present time. Geophysical prospecting is expensive; the effects of the law of diminishing returns in efficiency in finding prospects can already be recognized. Small oil companies, independent oil operators, and royalty buyers have been doing much geophysical work. But in face of the increasing costs of discovery of prospects and in face of the probably decreasing favorability of the prospects discovered, I expect to see a sharp drop in their use of geophysics within the next 10 years. The major oil companies and the larger small oil companies will continue to use geophysics indefinitely, but it seems doubtful whether the very extensive domestic campaigns of a few companies will be maintained for many years, certainly not for 10 years. The use of the geophysical methods in foreign countries has not yet reached its peak, and probaby will continue to increase for several years. That peak level of activity will probably be held for 10 years, although the site of maximum activity will shift from country to country; by the end of 25 years from now, I should expect the foreign use of the methods to have leveled off to one-fourth to one-half the peak level. Foreign service in geophysics does not seem to offer an attractive career, except for men of exceptional disposition. Young men just out of college, who are willing and who can afford to spend three or four years having a fling at adventure before settling down, will find it attractive, but when their tour of foreign service is over, they probably will have harder work finding a job than when they were seniors, and their foreign experience will count for little, except for further foreign service. A few men, mainly the higher men, will have headquarters at civilized or semi-civilized cities and towns or at permanent oil-company towns, and can
