THE brittleness of the intermetallics usually render their deformation studies at ordinary temperatures using conventional techniques inadequate. On the other hand, although X-ray line broadening measurements is not a complementary technique, it provides a means for gaining limited but useful information on the cold worked state of these materials. In the present instance, a study of the effects of cold work in the lead telluride intermetallic compound was carried out by analyzing the diffraction profiles of the deformed and the corresponding annealed samples. An ingot of PbTe was prepared by induction melting high-purity lead and tellurium in a quartz crucible under an atmosphere of argon. After homo-genization, the ingot was ground to -325 mesh at room temperature, and using a polished die the cold- worked powder was pressed into the form of flat faced briquets for diffraction measurements. A spectrometer with 0.125 deg per min scanning velocity, CuKa radiation, pulse height analyzer, and a proportional counter were employed in the X-ray measurements, and the powder peaks were collected from the sample in fully cold-worked state and after it had been annealed to relieve the effects of cold work completely. For reliable estimates of the peak extremities, small angular ranges where the tails merged into the background were point counted. Fourier inversions of the experimental peaks were carried out in an IBM 705 computer using the procedures introduced by stokes.' THEORY HYDRAULIC classification as explained by Rittinger and others was largely restricted to conditions wherein the free-falling velocities of the particles were conceived as governing the separations effected (see chapter 9). At the Mining Experiment Station of the U. S. Geological Survey, in Pittsburg, an investigation of the process of combustion is being carried on in a specially-designed furnace having an unusually long combustion-chamber. This work is conducted by a con~mittee consisti~lg of 11. Kreisinger, mechanical engineer; Dr. J. C. W. Frazer, chemist; and Dr..J. K. Clement, physicist. The problem, essentially one of physical chemistry, is estremely interesting to all who are concerned in the burning of coal or the construction of furnaces. The main object of these experiments is to ascertain the relation between the amount of' the volatile combustible driven from the coal and the combustion-spaces necessary to burn it completely. Our best steam-coals vary from 15 to 45 per cent. in volatile matter and from 40 to 75 per cent. of fixed combtistible. The greater part of the latter is burned on the grate: but the volatile combustible leaves the freshly-charsed coal and must be burned in the combustion-space. If this space is not large enough, the volatile combustible mill leave the furnace only partly burnecl, and the result will be a considerable heat-loss and a smoky stack. Strictly speaking, the factor which determines the completeness of combustion of the volatile matter, after it has been mixed with a certain amount of air, is the length of time the mixture is allowed to remain in the combustion-space; but this length of time depends on the extent of the space itself. Let us suppose, for instance, that, when a given coal is burned at a certain standard rate, the volume of the volatile combustible driven oft' per second is 10 cu. ft. Adding, say, 10 cu. ft. of air, the volume of the resulting burning mixture is increased to 20 cu. ft. If the combustion-space is 30 cu. ft., the burning mixture will stay in it,

The grades of spelter demanded by the consuming industries were not definitely established until the American Society for Testing Materials undertook to fix specifications, based on the varying percentages of the common impurities (lead, iron, and cadmium) as follows: Total, Not Leap, Iron, Cadmium, Over. Prime western............... 1.50 0.08 The question which grade was the best for certain purposes and why was left unanswered. The conservatism of the zinc-smelting industry and the unwillingness of the spelter-consuming industries to engage in research work prevented the full benefits being obtained that such standardization promised. The custom smelters, producing spelter in pigs or plates, found it impossible to adhere closely to the established limits on account of the variety of ores treated; and the smelters with long-established and known brands, or those manufacturing their metal into marketable products, like sheet zinc, did not have to abide by the newly established grades based on chemical percentages. Smelters engaged in the smelting of custom ores had occasional complaints about the quality of their metal, as some of the consumers, especially brassmakers and some galvanizers, used the rigid standards of the A. S. T. M. as a basis for obtaining redress from zinc smelters whenever some of their work was faulty. Indirectly, much good resulted from such complaints; for while the brassmakers and galvanizers, on the whole, did not know what was wrong, the metallurgists in charge of zinc smelters were induced to abandon their conservatism and study the influence of impurities in spelter from the point of view of the consumer. SANTA Rita del Cobre Grant, as the present Chino property was known in the early part of the nineteenth century, was the scene of the first copper-mining operations of consequence in the territory now included in the United States. As early as 1801, the mines afforded the principal supply of copper for coinage by the Mexican Government. According to an estimate made from old records by H. A. Thorne, now superintendent of mines for the Chino company, about 41,000,- 000 lb. of copper had been produced prior to 1845, when the exploitation of the native copper deposits of the Lake Superior district was started for the first time by white men. B. S. Butler, in Mineral Resources of the United States for 1913, estimated the production from Grant County, New Mexico, from 1845 to 1913, at 134,353,963 1b.-an amazingly precise figure, considering the character of the data that he must have used. As "Grant County" may be interpreted for practical purposes as the Santa Rita district, it seems fair to credit the Chino group with a production of 165,000,000 lb. of copper prior to the time when the modern operations commenced. Unlike Morenci, which, by the way, lies only about 80 miles westerly across the Arizona-New Mexico line, Chino offers no problem as to when its production might properly be classified as coming from a Porphyry Copper. The time is definitely fixed by the starting of the new mill at Hurley in October, 1911. The interval from 1903 to 1913 had witnessed little production of any kind; and prior to that time operations had been confined entirely to the mining of narrow veins or lenses of ore assaying 10 to 15 per cent copper or even more. It has been found that the interaction parameters and the atomic numbers of alloying elements follow regular periodic putterns. PHYSICO-chemical behavior of alloying elements in molten iron have become the subject of numerous investigations during the past 25 years. Consequently, the mutual effects of elements in the iron-rich solutions Fe-C-X, Fe-N-X, Fe-H-X, Fe-O-X, and Fe-S-X where X represents an alloying element, have gradually become better understood. These effects for a given temperature and pressure may be expressed by the interaction parameter of Wagner1, 2 derived briefly in the following manner. Early in the year 1875, some difficulty was experienced in the " Old blast-furnaces " of the Cambria Iron Company, at Johnstown, Pennsylvania, arising from the increased use of native coke, prepared in Belgian ovens near the furnaces, in mixture with Connellsville coke, in the production of Bessemer pig-iron. This was the more surprising at that time, because a very caulplete coal-crushing and washing apparatus, after the Bradford plan, had just been put into successful operation, affording a pure coal for coke-making. It was confidently expected that this thorough cleansing of the coal would improve the quality of the coke and fit it for the increasing manufacture of Bessemer pig-iron. But the trouble with the native coke continued. Experiments in fuel charges-increasing and reducing them—failed to correct the irregular working of these furnaces. Increasing the charge of native coke produced abnormal heat at the top of the furnace, reducing it cooled the furnace below. At this stage of affairs, the Hon. Daniel J. Morrell, general manager of the Cambria Iron Company, requested the writer to make the requisite investigation to determine the nature of this coke-difficulty, and to ascertain why the Johnstown coke could not be used in blastfurnace work as well as Connellsville. This task at first did not appear to present any special difficulties, but subsequently it expanded into proportions that caused no little anxiety. The first effort was directed to procuring average samples of Johnstown and Connellsville coke. At this period of the investigation, it was assumed that the whole matter could be intelligently solved by comparing the chemical analyses of the two cokes: Johnstown Coke. Connellsville Coke. IN order to get an idea as to the strength of steel rails, it will be well to review the tests to which iron rails have been subjected. In England, Mr. Ashcroft found that the best 80 pound rails broke under a 300 pound weight, falling 15 feet. In Germany the Society of Railway tyfanage1-s determined 011 and have long applied a test of 1000 pounds falling 101/2 feet, as the standard which all first-class iron rails must reach. In this country no inspection nor test is applied, but tests made show that iron rails fro; our most reliable makers, break under a G foot fall of a 1500 pound drop as an extreme test, most of those tested breaking under a far less test; some breaking with less than a 3 foot fall of the same weight. Everywhere where steel has been used, engineers have come to the conclusion that some test is required to show the regularity and strength of the product. As compared with iron, the tests which steel will stand are wonderful. After numerous experiments partially based on the experience of the rail-mill at Graz, belonging to the Southern Railway of Austria, the Society of German Railway Managers fixed upon a test of 2000 pounds falling 138 feet. They found that this test represented the steel which suited their necessities, and also found that with steel of otherwise average purity, this test represented about one-half per cent. of carbon, and made it a rule to take no steel containing under three-tenths of a per cent. of carbon, because it was too soft. They expressed a hope that a harder steel could soon be made tough enough to stand the same test. I n England, a test was adopted of 2240 pounds, falling 15 to 17 feet on the rail on heavy bearings. SINCE Noah pitched his ark within and without with pitch, the use of asphalt in human endeavor has been increasing-for Noah's pitch was asphalt. Asphalt is a bituminous material found in nature, either pure or admixed with smaller or greater quanti-ties of mineral and non-mineral materials, or obtained by the refining of crude asphaltic-base petroleum under proper methods of control. Native or "natural" asphalts are scattered through-out the world, though the commercial value of the various deposits varies greatly, depending upon both their accessibility and magnitude and the quality of the material found. It is an acknowledged fact that such asphalts have been produced through natural causes by practically the same application of tempera-ture and pressure as are used in the modern refining of crude asphaltic-base petroleum. The best known of all the native asphalt deposits are those of Trinidad Lake in the Island of Trinidad, British West Indies, and of Bermudez Lake in Vene-zuela. Asphalt from Trinidad Lake, after refining to remove organic and some inorganic diluents, contains approximately 35 per cent, of inorganic residue, and the asphalt thus produced must be fluxed with lighter asphaltic or semi-asphaltic base oil to make it com-mercially utilizable. The refined asphalt obtained from the Bermudez Lake deposit contains from 4 to 6 per cent. of inorganic material which cannot be removed. This asphalt, also, must be fluxed to produce com-mercial products. Small quantities of similar materials are available in other locations. The best pure native asphalt' is known as. gilsonite and is mined in com-mercial quantities in the State of Utah. In numerous places in the United States, particularly Oklahoma and Kentucky, there are deposits of sand¬stone and limestone impregnated with bitumen, which are known as rock asphalts. These rock asphalts may be used, particularly in the paving industry, either as found or by slight fluxing; from some deposits the asphalt is extracted and marketed commercially.

H. H. Stuart. Mr. Stuart in addressing a formal welcome to the Institute to the " little city of the mountains," spoke of the value of the services of the mining engineer in developing the mineral wealth of Virginia and in solving the problems of her geological history. Mr. Metcalf, President of the Institute, replied on behalf of the Institute to the cordial welcome of the mayor and Mr. Stuart, and then read an inaugural address on Force. At the conclusion of the President's address the following papers were read The Electrolytic Determination of Copper and the Formation and Composition of so-called Allotropic Copper, by J. B. Gravity surveying with the torsion balance or the pendulum for ore prospecting purposes has generally not been considered practical or even possible. It is the intention of this paper to show that a fast and sensitive gravimeter can be very useful in ore prospecting, as an auxiliary to the electrical and magnetic instruments. A number of gravimeters have been constructed and put in practical use in the last seven or eight years; for instance, by Ising, Lejay-Holweck, Haalck, Hartley, Thyssen, Noergaard, the Humble Oil and Refining Co. and the Gulf Production Co. Their main application, apart from their use for geodetic surveys, has been for structure mapping in oil prospecting. There is no record that any of them have been used for ore prospecting. About the middle of 1934 the Boliden Mining Co., in Sweden, began experiments in constructing a static gravity meter sensitive enough for ore prospecting. Calculations and considerations that will be discussed later in this paper showed that this would necessitate an accuracy in the measurements of 0.1 milligal—roughly, one ten-millionth part of the total force of gravity. The first successful practical field tests of the instrument were made in January 1936. About the middle of 1937 the Boliden gravimeter was perfected. Ore prospecting with this instrument is now regular practice in Sweden, especially for the testing of indications given by geoelectric and magnetic methods. One of the main functions of the United States Bureau of Mines is to obtain and disseminate information that will promote safety in and around mines, and the health and safety of employees engaged in mining. Serious health and safety conditions arising out of contamination of air in metal mines by dust, fumes from explosives and fires, and absorption of oxygen by timber and other causes, led the Bureau of Mines to cooperate with the United States Public Health Service in the study of dust occurrence and ventilation in metal mines in various parts of the country. A. J. Lanza, of the U. S. Public Health Service, and Edwin Higgins, mining engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1915, made a detailed study in the mines around Joplin, Mo.; their reports1 are now available. In 1916, 1917, and 1918, a similar study was made in the Butte, Mont., region by Doctor Lanza and D. Harrington, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines; the reports of this investigation will be available soon. In 1919, the study was continued in some of the Arizona mines by D. Harrington, of the Bureau of Mines, and G. E. McElroy and R. A. Koronski, of the U. S. Public Health Service, the underground work being completed in June, 1920; these reports are now being prepared for publication. In the spring of 1920, the scope of the work was extended, with D. Harrington in charge as supervising mining engineer, and short studies were made in the mines of the Coeur d' Alenes in Idaho and around Oatman, Ariz. It is hoped soon to extend the work into mines of California, Nevada, Colorado, Michigan, and Minnesota, and ultimately to other states should the mining companies be willing to coöperate.
