Man is born on Mother Earth without knowledge or skills. Soon he finds physical needs for food, clothing, shelter, exercise, and relaxation. His personal needs are self-expression, new experiences, and amusements, while his social needs have been classified as work, status, security, friendship, companionship, and love. He finds himself infinitesimal in comparison to the whole. Often- times when he feels smug, he is actually riding for a fall. And nothing is much worse than frustrated man. The postwar world does not provide the Utopia of peace and prosperity of which man had dreamed. In fact, it seems that the sacrifices and waste of that great struggle are being lost in the morass of stupidity, selfishness, and cupidity which unfortunately are still the most conspicuous traits of the human race. Perhaps it is too soon to expect the blessiilgs which are supposed to appear in a peaceful world, and man's thought is clouded with a pessimism engendered by the conflict itself, in which all activities tend to enhance his pessimistic nature. Must man submit that it is a law of nature for nations to go to war? The war has demonstrated that when faced with a common danger, peoples differing in antecedents, language, forms of government, and resources can unite for a time, pool their skills and abilities, and emerge victorious from a contest unparalleled in magnitude, ruthlessness, carnage, waste, and cost. Seldom in history has any industry undergone such radical and rapid change as that experienced by coal. Since 1947, when bituminous coal production reached an all-time high of 631 million tons, the industry has faced market problems not believed possible prior to the build-up of the great market demand occasioned by the wartime emergency and post-war recovery period. Subsequently, it suffered practically complete loss of the formerly huge railroad fuel market to dieselization; natural gas expansion ate into many markets; and oil took a heavy toll. Although anthracite, on the other hand, did not have a record year in 1947, it did attain a production figure of 57 million tons. Competitive forces since then have hit this fuel harder than bituminous coal. As we are aware, most prognosticators have pointed to a glowing long-range future for coal, with some forecasters estimating coal production by 1975 to be as high as 800 million tons. The largest increase in the use of coal in future years is expected to come from expansion of the industry's two largest growth markets-steel and the electric utilities. Optimists would have us believe that coal need merely bide its time to be carried to prosperity by the increased demands of these two basic customers. But the coal industry knows from bitter experience that even "assured" markets-as the railroads and domestic consumers once were-can be lost through lack of progress and lack of research. And coal's projected growth markets are not “assured.”

Third World countries have lately taken a variety of actions to improve their revenues from the development of their mineral resources. Increasingly, their governments seek to negotiate production agreements on the basis of feasibility studies and discounted cash flow projections. Developing countries are now more selective in giving incentives to encourage investment in the mining sector. They recognize the value of their contributions to mining projects by way of guarantees and the provision of infrastructure. Third World governments now seek to participate in the basic decision making which determines profitability, such as loan-equity ratios, plant capacity, and processing and sales arrangements. They are alert to the benefits of large-scale development and appreciate their risks. They seek to increase their benefits from foreign exchange earnings and the multiplier effect of mining projects. New forms of arrangements are being used to insure that the mining sector is developed in harmony with the national objectives of the Third World.

Tapadaa is one of several centers of porphyry copper mineralization in northern Sulawesi. Host rocks are mainly varieties of quartz diorite porphyry. Structural control of mineralization is indicated by elongation of the sulfide system (5 x 1 km) parallel to prominent NW-trending structures, but in detail mineralization is strongly influenced by relative age and lithology. Hydrothermal alteration is characterized by widespread occurrence of advanced argillic assemblages and the presence of sodic rather than potassic alkali feldspar. Propylitic alteration surrounds the mineralized area. Phyllic and advanced argillic alteration occur in structurally controlled zones and in limited pervasive areas. Hypogene copper mineralization develops in rocks with sericite-albite alteration and comprises low total sulfide chalcopyrite-bornite or chalcopyrite-pyrite.

THE three principal mines from which the celebrated Salisbury iron ores are obtained are called respectively the "Old Hill," "Davis," and "Chatfield" ore beds, and are situated in the town of Salisbury, Litchfield County, Conn., on the eastern slope of the Tocconuc range of hills.* The Old Hill Ore Bed is a tract of land of 100 acres, originally granted by the General Court in October, 1731, to be laid out by Daniel Bissell of Windsor. It was soon after surveyed and located by Ezekiel Ashley and John Pell. The descendants of Ashley are still proprietors in the mine. The supply of ore has been very abundant, and for many years was easily obtained, but latterly the cost of raising has been greatly increased. Up to about 1840 the average yield was estimated to be about 4500 tons per annum. The production has gradually increased until the average yield at pres¬ent is estimated at 15,000 tons annually. The largest production in any one year was about 20,000 tons. The proprietors of this mine were incorporated many years ago under the style of "The Salisbury Ore Bed Proprietors." The Davis Ore Bed, named after an early owner, was originally called Hendricks Ore Bed, and was owned before the organization of the town of Salisbury by Thomas Lamb, one of the first settlers *The data from which the historical portion of these notes has been compiled were collected by the Barnum-Richardson Company, of Lime Rock (Salisbury), Conn.

THE Birmingham red iron ore district in Jefferson County, north central Alabama, Fig. 1, is bounded on the northwest by the Warrior and Plateau coal fields and on the southeast by the Cahaba and Coosa coal fields. The area of study includes the ridge and valley between Red Mountain and Shades Mountain, Fig. 2, approximately 70 square miles extending from Homewood in the northeast to Greenwood in the southwest. The district is one of the most important producers of hematite in the United States, with an annual production of about 7 million tons. The amount of hematite mined between 1870 and 1950 ranged from 6 to 16 pct of the nation's total annual production, and the iron and steel products from blast furnaces in the Birmingham district supply the entire southeastern section of the country.

It is a time-honored saying in the anthracite region that " under the conglomerate there is no coal;" and the adage is generally reckoned a sure guide in coal-exploration. Yet there are many places where conglomerate, even coarse conglomerate, occurs above important coal beds, and, among others, above the great Mammoth bed. One of the most striking of such occurrences is on the Shippen and Wetherill tract, half a dozen miles west of Tamaqua; and it illustrates remarkably the disastrous effect of a too unquestioning blind confidence in the sweeping literal truth of a broad generalization. Here there is a conspicuous crag formed by a twenty-foot bed of egg-conglomerate, dipping 60 degrees southerly, and jutting out boldly at the western end of a hill, where it is cut through by the small stream of Little Creek. The hill runs eastward for half a mile, with occasional exposures of pebbly rock along the western half of the crest. MUCH work has been done recently on the lead-antimony system1 in connection with lead-rich alloys of commercial importance containing less than 20 per cent. antimony. Dean, Zickrick and Nix have called attention to the perpetuation in the literature of several erroneous data, such as a eutectic temperature of 228° C. at 12.5 per cent. antimony, instead of 247° at 13 per cent. The series is given as a classic example of a straight eutectiferous series in such late books as those of Heyn and Grossmann,2 Jeffries and Archer,3 Guillet and Portevin4 Pulsifer,5 Rosenhain,6 and Liddell,7 as well as the somewhat earlier works of Hofman (1918), Wang (1909) and Williams (1920). The work of Dean has definitely showed a solid solution of antimony in lead at about 2.5 per cent. antimony. While lecturing to a class in general metallurgy at the University of Idaho, the writer had the students prepare a series of lead-antimony alloys for the purpose of illustrating methods of thermal analysis. On an average of at least once a year there comes to the attention of the Institute Headquarters the activities of some individual who represents himself as a member of the Institute, and by a hard-luck story or other means secures loans or advances of money which are never returned. On one or two occasions the Institute has been able to secure the arrest and conviction of these frauds. Recently some individual has been operating in California and defrauded several members of the Institute. He is described as a man of 5 ft. 7 or 8 in. height, decidedly slim, and his weight is about 140 lb. His hair and mustache are gray, eyes blue or gray and he claims to be near-sighted. He is also said to have had a keen, furtive, "Hang-dog" look and claims to have been raised in Bethlehem, Pa. He speaks with a German accent. If a man answering this description presents himself before any members and claims to be a member of the Institute it will be to the good of the profession if he can be caught making fraudulent representations and placed where his ability to defraud will be under control. The most effective means of apprehending persons of this character is the very prompt notification to Institute Headquarters of any persons claiming to be members of the Institute in hard luck. If such persons are asked to supply their signature or photograph or both to be, forwarded to Institute Headquarters for identification this will serve as an excellent check on their operations. Reluctance to comply with such a request is in itself a suspicious circumstance.

Uranium deposits in the Spokane Indian Reservation, as well as those around Mt. Spokane, are essentially low grade, much of the ore containing less than 0.2 pct U808. The Mining Experiment Station of the Division of Industrial Research, State College of Washington, has been engaged in intensive research on the amenability of these low grade ores to froth flotation. The results: successful flotation of autinite, chief mineral constituent. At the outset of this work the goal was a concentrate of 1 pct U308 with a 90 pct recovery from ores containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8. Most of the work has been done on argillite ore from the Midnight mine on the Spokane Indian Reservation. The goal has not been attained using this ore, but samples of the granite ore from Mt. Spokane yielded successful results. For example, a concentrate containing 11.2 pct U308 was produced from a Mt. Spokane high grade ore containing 1.27 pct U3O8 with a recovery of 97.8 pct. Another Mt. Spokane ore yielded a concentrate of 5.0 pct U3O8 from an ore containing 0.13 pct U3O8, with a recovery of 85 pct. This same ore gave a recovery of 93.5 pct when the grade of concentrate was reduced to 2.0 pct.

FRED. MACCOY, Raton, N. M. (written discussion *).-In the review of the Chilean nitrate industry presented by Messrs. Rogers and Van Wagenen, the most critical point relating to the future of the industry has been summed up in the last paragraph: when nitric acid can be produced synthetically cheaper than from the Chilean deposits, the Chilean industry will cease. A study of the prevailing mining methods and extraction process leads one to suspect that much can be done to reduce the present cost of the finished product; and a reasonable reduction of the cost would make available immense reserves of low-grade caliche, the locations of which are fairly well delimited. In a study of costs, one finds that actual data are very hard to procure. The average operator does not know, with any degree of reliability, his "head assay," what percentage of the caliche is lost in mining, nor what tonnage of caliche he is putting into the maquina. One manager remarked to me, "We are not concerned in what it costs to treat a ton of caliche, we are interested only in what it costs to, produce a quintal of' finished nitrate." Apart from the crude methods of mining, and the inefficient work in extraction, attention is at once drawn to the fact that the 40d., stated as the cost of the nitrate at the plant, has become 80d. by the time it is on board ship. A brief sketch only is here intended, with a few illustrations, in order to give a general notion of the character and structure of these veins. I have stated elsewhere, several years ago, that these veins were wrought on a large scale and for many ages by some ancient peoples, most probably the so-called Mound Builders; although they built no mounds here, and have left no signs of any permanent habitation. They opened and worked a great marly veins down to or near water-level; that is, as far as the action of atmospheric chemistry had softened the rock so that it was workable without metal tools, of the use of which no signs are apparent. Many of the ladgest and most profitable of the mines of the present day are simply the ancient Mound Builders' mines reopened and pushed into the hard undecomposed granite by powder and steel. Blocks of mica have often been found half imbedded in the face of the vein, with the tool-marks about it, showing the exact limit of the efficiency of those prehistoric mechanical appliances. Noranda Mines, of Quebec, signed a contract for construction of a $20 million copper refinery at Gaspe, P.Q. The plant is expected to have a 65500-ton daily capacity for both concentrator and smelter. Extensive drilling. around Gaspe has revealed more than 65 million tons of 1 to 2 pct copper in several deposits. Cerro de Pasco Corp. has called a special stockholders meeting for August 19 to obtain permission to engage in the oil and natural. gas business, in addition to its present production of zinc, lead, copper, silver and other metals. St. Joseph Lead Co. recently entered the oil development field. The United States, Canada and Great Britain have agreed to establish a permanent organization to work on unification of engineering standards. General accord has been reached on drafting standards and practices, screw threads, fittings for gas cylinders, and fits and tolerances. Permanent committees will study these fields. Reconstruction Finance Corn approved the largest sum in its history. for a mining enterprise when it loaned $94 million to San Manuel Copper. Corp., of Pinal County, Ariz. The loan will be used to increase production of copper and molybdenum, in what was described as-the biggest copper deposits in the country. Three large gold mining concerns operating in the Philippines told the Philippine Wage Board that they would be forced to close if they had to boost miners' wages 500 to $2 per day. The companies are Mindanao Mother Lodes, Benguet Consolidated, and Balatoc Mining Co.

WHOEVER has occasion to judge tin in its whiteness from the testimony of his eyes alone would surely believe it to be purest silver, or something that comes very near to it in nature. This is even more so when, on handling, it is found to be harder than lead, to which it can be said to have a greater and closer resemblance. But whoever has actual experience with tin knows that none of the other metals is less similar to it than silver. For silver mixes with every metal, as does gold; and they unite together, and the others do likewise; and except for their color they change their natures but little. But this metal tin, wherever it is found, acts like a powerful poison which envenoms and corrupts the others; and it does this not only with large quantities but also with every small amount; indeed just the trace remaining where it has been melted is enough to embrittle silver and gold as well as iron and copper. The greater the quantity of it in these, the greater are its effects. Speculators of natural causes say that this fact arises from its great wateriness, which is very subtle and poorly decocted and almost like that of quicksilver. This wateriness, then, by means of its subtlety which joins itself with metals, imposes itself into that unctuous and viscous material which renders them flexible, and thus deprives them of their toughness

The Panhandle area of northwest Texas embraces the northern portion of the Permian Basin of Texas as well as a considerable portion of the western part of the Anadarko Basin of Oklahoma. For the purpose of this report it will include in addition to the 20 counties of the Panhandle proper the two tiers of counties lying to the south, a total area of about 32,000 square miles. Crossing the Texas Panhandle diagonally from northwest to southeast is the Amarillo Arch, related to which is all of the production discovered to date. Oil Production Up to Jan. 1, 1930, the Panhandle has produced about 125,000,000 bbl. of oil. The peak yearly production occurred in 1927, during which period 49,000,000 bbl. were produced. In 1928 the production fell to 25,000,000 bbl., but in 1929, on account of important discoveries in Gray County, the total increased to 31,000,000 bbl. To date Hutchinson County has produced 64 per cent. of the total. Table 1 shows the total yearly production by counties. The present production of the Panhandle is 100,500 bbl. from 1745 wells or an average of 57.6 bbl. per well compared to a production on Jan. 1, 1929, of 59,748 bbl. from 1468 wells or an average of 40.7 bbl. per well. Hydrolytic stripping is the process whereby metal ions in a loaded solvent extractant are hydrolyzed by water, typically at 130°C to 200°C (265°F to 392°F). Equilibrium hydrolytic stripping tests were done on Versatic 10 solutions containing various metals, singly and in mixtures. Single solutions of Fe, Ni, Cu, Mg, and Mn precipitated [a]Fe2O3 Ni(OH)2 Cu2O + CuO, Mg(OH)2 and [?]Mn203 respectively, during hydrolytic stripping. Several mixtures containing iron precipitated magnetic spinel ferrites, MFe204. No other combinations formed mixed oxides. It is proposed that the mechanisms for hydrolysis and precipitation of iron in loaded Versatic solutions are similar to those for iron hydrolysis in aqueous solutions. Magnetic interactions between mixed carboxylate complexes are thought to be responsible for the homogenous nucleation of magnetic mixed oxides in preference to single oxides.

DURING 1921, the Oklahoma mines dominated the American zinc-producing industry. They comprised the only group that could produce under the adverse conditions that prevailed. At the beginning of 1921, there were about 34 mills in opera-tion in the Tri-state District, out of a total estimated variously at 150 to 200, and these were producing at the rate of about 5000 tons of blende concentrate per week. At the end of 1921, there were about 50 mills in operation. The Tri-state District rates about 80 men to the mine and mill, on-the average. SMELTING The zinc smelters-in 1921 experienced a disastrous year. All of them operated at greatly reduced capacity and probably most of them suffered loss in operations. Smelting costs came down to a considerable extent by virtue of drops in the price for coal, wage reductions and more efficient work, but these ameliorations were insufficient to enable the smelters to come out even. In the Illinois fields, wages at the end of 1921 had been reduced about 37 per cent. from the peak (middle of 1920), but coal continued to be very dear. The operation of works at a low rate of their capacity was a discouraging and expensive condition. At the end of 1921, the zinc-smelting capacity ,of the United States was as follows:

Discussion of the paper of Herbert F.. Miller, Jr., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 75, March, 1913, pp. 409 to 413. HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J.:-Looking at the illustrations, it seems to me that a furnace made with the width of port that is shown here would not be a good working furnace. The economy of brick and gas might be all right, but I do not think it would melt the steel properly. I should say that the flame would not spread out suitably to fill the whole hearth of the furnace, and there would be undue waste, and it seems to me that it would be an undesirable furnace to adopt. The question as to whether a producer-gas flame would lie down in the furnace, hugging the bottom better than the natural-gas flame, is settled, not so much by the specific gravity of the gases themselves, as by the relative temperatures at which they enter the laboratory of the furnace. We know in that case that producer gas would be lighter than a natural gas which had not been run through a regenerator and expanded four or five volumes in consequence. I would like to hear what Mr. Miller has to say about the action of the flame spreading properly over the charge to give good metallurgical results in the form of furnace which he presents.

AT the meeting of January 28 which was held too late to be reported in the February MINING AND METAL-LURGY, Messrs. Taylor, Barron, Bassett, DeGolyer, Hutchinson, Norris, Rand, Reynders, Smith, Sweetser and Callow were present. Aside from routine matters, relating to finances and membership,, the Board author-ized establishment of a payroll account and payment by check. It also approved plans for a regional meeting to be, held at Cleveland on April 19 and 20 under the auspices of the Ohio Section and the Iron and Steel Committee. Following a report from the Committee on increase of Membership, Messrs. Barron, Bassett, and Sweetser were appointed as a special committee to con-sider the feasibility of increasing the dues. Mr. Read was made secretary of this Committee. A pleasant feature of the meeting was the presence of past-presi-dent Olcott and the presentation by him to the Institute of an elaborate scrap book, covering the excursion through Mexico made by the Institute in 1901. The meeting was preceded by a dinner at which Scott Turner spoke of the problems of the Bureau of Mines and the large volume of service work for the govern-ment it was now called on to perform. M. L. Requa discussed the need of more exact data covering our national reserve of minerals. E. N. Cooper gave a vivid picture of conditions in Mexico. W. H. Bassett told of the problems before the Institute of Metals, and Zay Jeffries told of the plans for that Division now being formulated. Max W. Ball reinforced what Mr. Requa had said relative to the importance and value of conservation studies as relates to minerals.

Coal companies in the anthracite region are studying various methods of mining, seeking one that will shorten considerably the life of the gangway and thus decrease the maintenance charges. In steep pitching measures, the maintenance charges of the gangways are high because of the cost of replacing timbers and cleaning up falls. Therefore, if the length of the gangways can be decreased and the mining made more concentrated, the life of the coal gangways will be decreased and the maintenance charges per ton of coal produced will be smaller. The practice in the anthracite region is to drive long coal gangways and to work the breasts as the gangway from which they were driven is advanced. In many cases these gangways are from 4000 to 6000 ft. in length; and some are even longer. As these must be maintained not only until they have reached their limit but until second mining begins (which may be some years later), the maintenance charges are high. If the gangway is allowed to close, when the time comes to remove the pillars the cost of re-opening it may be as expensive as the original driving cost. The Lehigh and Wilkes-Barre Coal Co., at its Wanamie Colliery at Wanamie, Pa., has been using a system of mining that, as far as the writer knows, is not used in any other place in the anthracite fields.
