EXTENDED discussions, by inviting attention to problems affecting the conservation of natural resources, have encouraged investigations as to their sufficiency, with the general result that the more thorough the examination, the less cause appears for anxiety as to the exhaustion or serious depletion of these resources. The extent of industrial development, the large plants and the enormous volumes of materials required, when compared with conditions a few decades ago, are sufficiently startling to enlist the attention of those who "fear .the pace," and yet in but few instances has real solicitude for the future. been warranted by a knowledge of true conditions. In a former communication, presented 5 years ago,1 I endeavored to emphasize the fact that true conservation represented the best utilization of reserves and not the locking up of resources for future use; a conviction which has become more pronounced as the subject was investigated. Prophecies of the, early exhaustion of mineral resources have raised the question as to our permanent reliance upon these, and encouraged inquiries which have in most cases developed reassuring conditions. But the fact that the future appears less dark than prognosticated cannot excuse wastefulness or improvidence; and detailed study which demonstrates an apparent abundance of natural resources should encourage their best application. In making inventories of resources one is liable to confine conclusions as to availability upon present circumstances and conditions in the past, or to formulate data for the future upon methods which are rapidly being displaced. In reserves which are not reproductive, such as minerals, the possibilities of exhausting the supply are startling if estimates assume that future extensions will follow methods which were less economical than those now employed, or to he used, and we dare not claim that the limit of advanced practice has been attained.

(New York Meeting, October, 1913.) THE problem of increasing blast-furnace efficiency through diminution of flue-dust production while operating with burdens consisting largely of fine ores has of recent years attracted the attention of metallurgists, whether directly or indirectly interested in the economies of iron smelting, and the various methods evolved from theory or practice have been. submitted to wide discussion. After the very thorough and, at that time, exhaustive view of the whole subject, which was afforded to the industry by the meeting of this Institute in February, 1912, the subject was again taken up at the meeting of the Verein deutscher Eisenhüttenleute at Düsseldorf in December, 1912. While American and German conditions are not entirely identical, it may be of interest to give here the words of the gentleman summing up the discussion at the Düsseldorf meeting : ?The chief advantage offered by the use of briquettes lies in the fact that disturbances in the furnace, caused mostly by the presence of fine ores in the burden, are avoided, and that blast pressure can be considerably reduced. The resulting economies cannot be overrated, as, with lower blast consumption per ton of product, the installation will be able to take care of increased production. In consequence of lower pressure and speed of blast, heat is more efficiently utilized,, flue gas temperature is lowered, and coke particles are less liable to be carried along with the flue dust, of which considerably less is produced. Finally, by increased regularity of operation and higher temperature in the lower parts of the furnace, the quality of the product is improved. The question of briquetting iron ores has grown to be one of the most important in the iron industry, and it is not any more a question of what is the cost 'of briquetting a ton of ore, but what, in. using ore briquettes, is the cost, of: production of a ton of iron."

Much has been said and written on the shortcomings of the open-flow and restricted potentials of oil wells to determine their relative ability to produce. The oil industry in general is agreed that the open-flow potential in particular is grossly inequitable, wasteful and expensive, but that potential is still used in many pools. This is partly because no thoroughly satisfactory substitute has been found and partly because operators are reluctant to adopt other methods that have been suggested; or, as Hamlet would say, we would rather "bear those ills we have than fly to others we know not of." In a great many pools the use of tubing potentials has been substituted for open-flow potentials, but open-flow potentials through casing are still being used in many pools, particularly. in Oklahoma, although the expense of such potentials has been pointed out many times. In one of the most recent pools in Oklahoma it is the practice to take open-flow potentials through the casing with the tubing out of the hole. The well is usually tubed after it is drilled in for the purpose of washing it in and cleaning the hole. After preliminary tests are run the tubing is pulled under pressure preparatory to taking the potential. After the potential is taken the tubing is rerun, under pressure. In order to accommodate the large capacity of the wells, it is customary to set three separators, six vent lines and large oil-storage tanks. It is conservatively estimated that the equipment not needed for producing the well currently but which is installed solely for the purpose of establishing large potentials costs the operator at least $5000 per well—approximately 35 per cent of the cost of equipping a well for production. Such needless expenditure constitutes an economic waste in addition to the gas that is wasted in taking potentials. All mines have a finite life and the time comes when the ore is depleted, or it has become uneconomical, or for some other reason which may be peculiar to that particular mine, it must be shut down. The operation at that point of time still has some assets such as mining and milling equipment, workshops, and in the case of a gold mine, an unknown quantity of gold which has been trapped in the treatment plant. Recovering this gold can be done at small cost and can be extremely profitable. Recovery of these hidden assets requires a good knowledge of the treatment plant, i. e. , as say values of heads, tails, and of the products produced; and if mercury for amalgamation was used, where? A careful study of available plant records can be extremely valuable in forming a working plan for adequate recovery. In the following paragraphs the various unit operations and equipment where gold can collect are described and suggestions made for its recovery. Subsequently, a case history will be given for dismantling a gold plant which had a complex flowsheet and which had been in operation for many years. Looking for trapped gold in a crushing section would invariably not be worthwhile since crushing is normally a dry process and there would be few areas where free gold could collect. In the milling section, however, many areas can literally become small gold mines in themselves. Material in the bottoms of grinding mill scoop boxes can be high-grade, and even the scale on the sides of the boxes should be scraped off and collected. Mill liners should be removed and all scale, rust, and residue collected. Residue in the bottoms of rake or spiral classifiers, if they have been used, should be removed as should the scale and rust on the sides of pump sumps, launders, etc. The following procedures should be used to extract gold from these collected materials. All steel (ball scats) should be removed, screened out, and reserved. Fine material should be placed in an amalgam barrel, water added and ground with the amalgamation tailings being sampled and assayed. If high-grade, tails should be reserved; if not, discarded. The coarse material that was screened out should be placed in a heap, regularly sprayed with water and allowed to rust. After several months this material should be screened again and the fines amalgamated.

THE origin of so-called annealing or recrystalli-zation twins in face-centered-cubic metals continues to be a matter for speculation, and in the present report an attempt is made to explain their origin and to account for at least a majority of the observations concerning their behavior. The fact that annealing twins are prominent only The speelmen was deformed 8 pet in compression and then indented over the lower left-hand corner in a Rockwell in-denter, and then annealed to cause partial recrystallization. Note intense twinning in heavily deformed part and slight twinning in less deformed part. The upper right-hand corner is unrecrystalized. Area reduced approximately 25 pot for reproduction. after recrystallization suggests that deformation may be necessary for their formation. In 1926, Mathewson1 reported the observation by Phillips that annealing twins are frequently parallel to strain markings which delineate octahedral planes in the deformed (and partially recrystallized) matrix, and suggested that strain markings are mechanical twins which grow into annealing twins during recrystallization. Later work by Burke and Barrett' has shown that strain markings are traces of planes upon which slip has occurred, and that there is no evidence for the formation of mechanical twins of microscopically resolvable width in face-centered-cubic metals. Mathewson3 has pointed out, however, that slip may produce twin faults, and later modifications of this hypothesis have assumed that twin faults rather than true mechanical twins serve as the nuclei for annealing twins. Carpenter and Tamura5 suggested, also in 1926, that annealing twins might form by accidents of growth. DURING the past 10 years, the safe and efficient lighting of the coal mines of this country has received an ever-increasing amount of attention. Several States have passed laws attempting to regulate the type of lamp to be used and the nature of the fuel to be burned, and the mining departments of coal-mining States have generally shown a keen and intelligent interest in this subject. The passage of the recent Employers' Liability Act in Pennsylvania has made it necessary for many coal-mining companies to take out liability insurance, and the companies underwriting such insurance have made it desirable for the insured to permit the use of, none but illuminants of established worth. While these conditions have not obtained for a sufficient length of time to permit the statement that the illumination of coal mines by portable lamps has been standardized, still, considerable progress has been made and the direction of future practice in this branch of coal-mining technology is very evident. Under these conditions it seemed that a review of the methods now used in coal-mine illumination, together, with a brief consideration of the principles underlying these methods, might be of some interest. Miners' lamps may be divided into three classes: The open light, the electric cap lamp and the flame safety lamp. It will be desirable to consider each of these classes separately, as each has properties peculiar to itself and one class is hardly comparable with another. In this country, without question, the open light is the most generally used of all miners' lamps. This fact is explained by the relative freedom of a large proportion of our mines from gaseous conditions, and by the admirable systems of ventilation installed in those that show a tendency toward such conditions. In the metal relines, the miner's candle has had and still has considerable vogue. Because of the small amount of ventilation usually supplied in metal mines, the freedom of the candle from any tendency to produce noxious gases or offensive odors, and the small amount of air it consumes, are. valuable assets, while, because

The presence of tellurium in copper and, by inference, in copper alloys, has been considered seriously detrimental and has been avoided. In particular, very small amounts of tellurium have been found to produce red-shortness, although the effects on cold-working and ordinary physical and mechanical properties have not been known so definitely. References in the literature are few, but as long ago as 1881, Eglestonl reported that 0.083 per cent tellurium in fire-refined copper rendered the copper red-short and therefore worthless for hot-rolling. In hot-rolling copper cakes containing this amount of tellurium, he found that fine cracks appeared in the cakes on the first pass through the rolls, the cracks opening further in successive passes. When cold, the metal was said to be tough and malleable. A few years ago, during the course of an investigation in our laboratory on copper-base alloys, it was found that tellurium-bearing alloys could be machined much more freely than similar alloys not containing tellurium. The study was pursued further in this direction, and considerable data were obtained, which indicated that certain tellurium-bearing alloys might have properties of commercial interest. The work eventually led to patent protection,2 a wide range of tellurium-bearing copper-base alloys being covered. This article presents results obtained on the effect of tellurium on the mechanical properties of three copper-base alloys: commercial bronze (90 Cu, 10 Zn), 1.5 per cent tin bronze (98.5 Cu, 1.5 Sn), and silicon bronze (96 Cu, 3Si, 1 Zn). Several alloys were cast in each series, with tellurium content ranging from 0 up to about 1 per cent. The alloys were melted under charcoal in a clay-graphite crucible, using a high-frequency induction furnace, and were cast without undue difficulty in rod form, 15/8 in. in diameter. In 1857 the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company, whose main line extended from Philadelphia to Pottsville, Pennsylvania, with branches into the coal regions of Schuylliill County, made a contract with the Fairmount Rolling Mill, at Philadelphia, for the rerolling of some four thousand tons of iron rails. The essential features of the agreement were that the old rails should be piled with puddled iron and rolled into flats for the rail pile, which latter was • to be of a section seven inches square, and after being heated, and reduced, by rolling, to a bloom of a section about fire inches by six inches, was to be reheated, before being finished into the rail of the T pattern, four inches high, weighing sixty-four pounds per yard. Great care was exercised in the execution of this contract, and the rails being distributed over all parts of the road, gave general satisfaction by their excellent wear. Five years afterward, the principal proprietor and manager of the Fairmount Rolling Mill was elected President of the Reading Railroad, and very many of the rails made under his supervision were still in use in the tracks of the company, of which he had just assumed the management. His first efforts were, therefore, directed to the procuring of more rails of the same quality wherewith to replace those worn out. Here he encountered some trouble, makers refusing to bid because of the details in the specification, the required reheating being the objectionable feature, for which it was generally intimated they would not be sufficiently remunerated for the increased labor, extra coal consumed, and the changes necessary from the established methods of working. Most of the new rails were, therefore, bought, and the old rails rerolled without regard to any particulars as to the manner of piling, heating, etc., each manufacturer furnishing what he deemed the best article possible for the money. DURING July and August, 1931, the Bloomington Limestone Co.,. at Bloomington, Ind., ran a single wire saw on ledge No. 2 at Maple Hill quarry. The ledge was hard rock, much harder than the average Indiana limestone. It was opened at two ends for a depth of about 20 ft., leaving a 130-ft. section between. During the tests 21 cuts were made in this ledge, to an average depth of 10.42 ft., for a total effective cutting area 028,445 sq. ft. The actual area sawed was about 20 per cent higher, as we did not level down in the center, preferring to cut deeper on the ends. The various cuts were carefully, logged, and the results plotted. A study of these results is interesting, as it enables a forecast of probable future costs to be made, and also because it points out the limitations of wire saws, and the lines development should logically take. Some of the inferences to be drawn are discussed below. Best Length of Cut.-No. trouble was due to length of cut, except that we could not easily level down a long cut, and it is probable that longer cuts, say up to 200 f t., can be made. Obviously, longer cuts will result in a higher sawing rate, in square feet per hour if- they do not cause stoppages. Working Higher Ledges.-The cuts averaged 10.42 ft. high by 130 ft. long. A study of several logs indicated that during only about 15 per cent of the cutting time was the saw cutting to its full efficiency; that is, during about 85 per cent of the time the saw was bedding in at the ends and not cutting well in the center, or the ends were below the floor line and only part of the wire was doing effective cutting. This does not mean that the wire was cutting to only 15 per cent of its capacity, but it means that during about 85 per cent of the time part of the cutting was being wasted. If higher ledges had been worked, the wire would have cut to its full efficiency a large part of the time, as it would have had a greater distance; to saw after it had bedded in to the ledge before the ends went down below the floor level. The exact saving to be expected cannot be calcu-lated, but it would be large, if really high cuts were made.

SOME mixtures of sulphide and oxide ores from the Tintic district in Utah are of a sufficiently good grade to be shipped to the smelter without beneficiation. In mining this type of ore, however, a material tonnage of ore of a similar composition but of lower grade is obtained. It is a question of economics whether such ore should be shipped with a certainty of a small return or concentrated if that would yield a sufficiently increased return to amortize plant construction and upkeep and yield a higher rate of profit than at present. It may be assumed that the tonnage of this borderline ore is constantly increasing and that eventually it will attain such proportions as to justify plans for milling on a relatively large scale. Under existing conditions, the producer of mixed sulphide and oxide ores is not greatly concerned about the physical characteristics of his ore or of its mineralogical complexities, since his contract with the smelter calls for payment on the basis of chemical analysis. When concentration is contemplated an entirely different picture is presented. Percentages of valuable metal content must then be considered in terms of minerals, for it is in the form of minerals that recoveries are made and losses sustained. In describing the performance of a given flotation mill and reagent combination, it may be stated as a generality that a specific percentage recovery of valuable elements is made. Technically, however, the concentrator is really constructed and the reagents are selected to recover the valuable minerals. These considerations must be given prominence in discussing border- line ores from the Tintic district because of their physical characteristics and mineralogical composition. Because of these peculiarities they may be justly termed complex, since their lead, silver, and copper contents are each represented by two or more minerals of different chemical composition and presenting widely divergent physical properties. THERE once was a little kid, whose lot was a very tough one until he grew up. His parents did not have much in common; from all indica-tions, it is probable that the child was not wanted. His father Geology and his mother Physics separated shortly after his birth, which occurred during the World War amid a smoke screen of mathematics. He was kicked around a great deal. His parents could not agree on a name, and they finally christened him "Geophysics," for short. His relatives insisted that the name should be "Geophysical Prospecting," "Geophys-ical Exploration" or "Exploratory Geophysics"; though the youngster has grown up by now, this battle is still going on. His father did not think the child would amount to much until he began to show some unexpected talents, which were acquired, no doubt, from his mother Physics. His progress caused his father no little worry, and he began to wonder whether his offspring would help him in his business when he grew up or would set up shop in competition with the old man. His aunt Petroleum watched his growth with benevolent interest; his uncle Mining remained rather skeptical and cousin Civil Engineering not only assumed the attitude of the man from Missouri but was not much con-vinced even after he had been shown. Making a long story short, the kid decided that he had to stand on his own feet and get along as best he could. Having come from a good family . he possessed some outstanding characteristics such as resourcefulness and a reasonable amount of business ability. He therefore decided that it would be to his advantage to follow in his father's and mother's foot-steps as much as possible, and develop the good qualities of both. As a result, the youngster did fairly well for himself, and his relatives decided that it might be to their advantage to be on better terms with him. Father Geology had come to the conclusion that the boy could be very helpful to him and now wanted him to live in his house. His mother, who had brought him through the teething and measles stages, felt quite capable of bringing up the boy without the help of his father; and, as the fairer sex will do, would confide to a neighbor every now and then that his

IN previous workif2 we have shown that the steady state cyclic stress response of pure copper tested in the low cycle fatigue range was determined only by the plastic strain amplitude and the test temperature. hus, copper, at any given temperature, has a unique cyclic stress-strain curve independent of prior history. Cu-7.5 wt pct Al, however, showed a stress response for a given plastic strain amplitude and temperature which depended sensitively on prior history. From this work we predicted that all wavy slip mode materials, typified by copper, would have a unique cyclic stress-strain curve; whereas all planar slip mode materials, typified by Cu-7.5 pct Al, would not. This prediction has now been tested for a number of materials of widely varying crystal structure and slip character. Wavy slip mode materials studied include: Fe. Al, Cd, disordered FeCo-V, and Cu-3 pct Co (quenched and aged). Planar slip mode materials investigated include: Fe-3 pct Si, ordered FeCo-V, disordered Ni3Mn, ordered Ni3Mn, and Zn. The treatment and properties of these materials are listed in Table I. Cyclic stress-strain curves were determined by controlled plastic strain tests (see Ref. 1 for details) at room temperature for all materials in both the initially annealed and cold worked conditions. The results obtained for iron and Fe-3 pct Si are typical of wavy and planar slip mode materials, respectively. The cyclic stress-strain curves for these materials are shown in Fig. 1 and it can be seen that iron has a unique cyclic stress strain curve while Fe-3 pct Si does not. Aluminum, Cu-3 pct Co, and disordered FeCo-V showed a behavior like that for iron, while Ni3Mn in both the disordered and ordered condition behaved in the same manner as Fe-3 pct Si. How to interpret the composition of rocks has been a question which has caused a great deal of discussion and investigation among geologists and chemists. It is evident that that analysis will give the clearest results, which will give the relative proportion of the different minerals composing the rock as well as the weight of their different constituents. This, however, is a very difficult matter, and in those rocks which seem to the naked eye & entirely compact, like obsidian and other rocks of that class, appears to be impossible. Cordier, in the early part of the century, invented a process which is known as the " mechanical analysis of rocks," which is really a method of mechanical preparation, and consists in crushing the rock to a certain fineness, and then, by virtue of their density, washing out the different minerals, so as to make a mineralogical analysis, separating completely the different constituents of the rocks. In the hands of so skilful a man, this was a comparatively easy matter, and Cordier found no difficulty in ascertaining the mineralogical composition of a rock. The ultimate chemical composition was ascertained from the sum of the elements contained in the different materials. In the light, of to-day, it is very easy to see that the complete chemical analysis of the rock does not necessarily lead to the explanation of its character. It has been so difficult., however, to have any other kind of analysis made that most chemical examinations have been made as ultimate, and cot as mineralogical analyses. The panning out of the different minerals composing the rock, which are often very nearly of the same specific gravity, is so difficult that a person of ordinary mechanical skill is scarcely able to do it; consequently the mechanical analysis which Cordier proposed, and was able himself so skilfully to effect,, has never been practiced to any extent. A school was formed in France consisting of a very small number of Cordier's followers, which, in face of the difficulty of acquiring the method, very soon died out as a school, though some of his most skilful followers are still living. THE production of non-ferrous secondary metals has become a large and important industry in the United States, and deals with practically every type of manufacturing concern. Its business is unique in that it generally buys from its customers as well as sells to them, whether they are individuals, cities, corporations, or the United States government. Its operations are of vital importance to the success and prosperity of many of the nation's most important manufacturers; yet there are few industries about which less is generally known by those outside it, whether concerning the magnitude of its operations or the details of its actual technique. The industry itself is to blame for this meager publicity, because its technical men have made few attempts to openly exchange ideas, in spite of the excellent examples set by the iron and steel or the copper and brass industries. Whether this is due to the ancient shroud of secrecy generally supposed to cover smelting operations, or because its technical men actually felt that the industry was too puny to be interesting, is hard to say. This paper will consider its subject in a general way, attempting to show something of the size and importance of the industry, as well as its fitness to do its work well. Attention will be called to the sound economic reasons for the handling of non-ferrous wastes by specialists, and to the often unseen losses of metals and labor which occur when manufacturers reclaim their own metallic wastes. MAGNITUDE OF THE MODERN INDUSTRY No particular thought is given to the kitchen accident whereby a ruined saucepan is sorrowfully tossed into the ash can, yet it is a fairly safe guess that within a month this saucepan, together with hundreds of its fellows, will again be in service, perhaps in an automobile crankcase, or in an electric vacuum sweeper. It is by this conversion of the useless into the useful, whether from home or large manufacturer, that the secondary tonnage is built up.

BEDS or lenses of potash and magnesium salts are found in a thick salt section (Salado) overlain by Rustler Red Beds in several members of which water is present and from one of which the refinery process water used by International is obtained. Most of the holes drilled are less than 1000 ft. deep, but some wildcat holes have exceeded 3000 ft. Cable or rotary tools are used to drill down to the salt. When samples of water are desired the cable rig is used, but when this is not necessary, and where caving material is present, the rotary rig has an advantage. The rotary rig has a further advantage in that only one machine is required to drill and core the entire hole, whereas the cable rig must be moved off to make way for the core drill. Casing is placed in the upper section of the hole as required to shut off water, and a 5 3/16-in. string is set in the top of the salt before coring starts. With the rotary rig drilling is often carried to the salt with no casing, as drilling mud seals off caving ground and water-bearing strata, and a string of 4-in, line pipe or 4-in. flush-joint casing is landed on top of salt. Several types of gasoline-powered core rigs have been used in the field and all recover a 2 1/2-in. core. More recently the Sullivan Model 37 rotary rig has been tried, and a Sullivan Model N has been adapted to use a rotary bit in the upper section. Core is recovered in 20 ft. sections with a double-tube core barrel, and the bit used is a bottom-discharge type set with diamonds. The drilling fluid must be a saturated brine to prevent solution and etching of the minerals present. Blowouts are apt to occur from nitrogen gas trapped under the several polyhalite beds, and some have been strong enough to blow the tools out of the hole. Core recovery is practically 100per cent. All holes are plugged after drilling, with cement through the salt section and opposite each water horizon, and mud through the remainder of the hole. Cores are carefully logged and preserved, and in sections containing potash and magnesium minerals they are quartered and analyzed. I desire to submit, for the consideration and information of the members of the Institute, the following data, drawings, and tables, showing what I believe will be interesting information with regard to the diamond drill, and its uses in developing mineral lands. I would first say that the results given have been obtained during the past two years by means of two drilling machines belonging to the Lehigh Valley Coal Company, operating on their coal lands in the Mahanoy, Lehigh, and Wyoming regions. 1st. From the first it will be seen that the total number of test-holes bored up to May 1st of this year is 24; 9 of these are in the Mahanoy region, 6 in the Lehigh region, and 10 in the Wyoming region, in all of which cores have been taken for the whole distance. The total distance bored is 9902 feet. The majority of the holes have been put down for the purpose of proving the lower veins of the coal series, and have had to encounter the harder rocks of the coal formation. Much of the distance has been through the lower conglomerates, going in some cases through the coarse egg conglomerate, the foundation of the coal deposit, and to the green sandstone and red shale which underlie it. These lower sandrocks and conglomerates are among the hardest known to geologists, and present a formidable resistance to the exploring drill. This fact must be taken into consideratiotl in comparisons of cost of drilling, and when considered will still further improve the very favorable results I am able to show in my statement of costs. In illustration, I will cite the work of one bit when boring in the upper or softer rocks of the Wyoming region, where 280 feet were obtained without resetting, while in the Lehigh and Mahanoy regions, in the lower and harder rocks, bits set with the same quality of diamonds would only bore from 3 to 20 feet before being worn out. Introduction The efficient process control of a uranium mill and its associated mining operation requires a nearly continuous knowledge of the uranium concentration in the ore. Generally, the approach is to use laboratory assays of grab samples from the mill feed belt. In some cases, elaborate and expensive systems have been used to ensure random sampling, but even with these systems, mass-balance discrepancies still exist. There is a requirement for an on-line instrument that can give a prompt, accurate analysis of a large portion of the feed stock. The authors have recently evaluated a laboratory system that achieves these goals using neutron activation and delayed neutron counting. The development of the on-line uranium ore analyzer is a consequence of previous work done at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment (WNRE) (Campbell et al., 1978 and 1981), and is based on the emission of delayed neutrons after the neutron irradiation of fissionable materials. The mechanism of delayed neutron emission has been described (Keepin, 1965), but briefly is as follows. The fission fragments resulting from irradiation are in an excited state. Certain of these delayed fission products, precursors, decay to a more stable state by the emission of a delayed neutron. The delayed neutrons can be divided into six groups with effective half-lives ranging from 0.2-55 sec. It is important to note that more than 50% of the delayed neutrons are emitted within the first 6 sec after irradiation; this has an influence on the design of the analysis instrument. Measurement Cycle The measurement cycle involves a neutron irradiation, a delay time, and a counting period. The laboratory demonstration model of the ore analyzer comprises a californium-252 neutron source, a source chamber, a pneumatic transfer facility, and a neutron irradiation and counting module [(Fig. 1)]. The ore sample is placed in the irradiation chamber. The neutron source is transferred to the center of the chamber for a 5-sec irradiation while the helium-3 thermal neutron detectors are switched off. As the source returns to the storage chamber, the detectors are switched on and the delayed neutrons counted. The total assay cycle is 16 sec. The current instrument design calls for the ore to be cut from the main belt every 16 sec by a mechanical arm and dropped into the analyzer directly, or via another belt. The cycle starts when there is a sufficient mass of ore in the irradiation chamber to depress a switch and stops when the delayed neutron count is finished. The ore is then dropped through the bottom of the analyzer chamber and returned to the main belt. The counts from each cycle are accumulated and the data reduced to give the desired information.

ALTHOUGH I have already described to you the procedure for making assays of the ores (a thing that is not very different from what I wish to describe in the present chapter), I shall repeat it in substance, with the addition of the method of assaying gold, in order to tell you certain rules for weights which are very necessary to know, and above all in order to demonstrate to you the method of refining a small quantity of silver by the use of a cupel, and in order to tell you how there are (I find) only two ways that are customary for bringing silver to fineness. One is that of the cupel [copella] and the other is that of the cupeling hearth [cenneraccio], one for a small and the other for a large quantity. But although they are called by two names and appear to be two methods, the aim and the procedure of both is actually the same. Nor do I know of other difference between them than the carrying out of the method and the large or small quantity. Cupeling is a very useful thing for anyone who handles gold or silver to know. Indeed it is necessary, because it not only throws light on the work that is to be done but it also shows the truth [55] and the correct weights in large quantities. It is a quicker and easier way of bringing the work to the desired perfection than is afforded by the method for large quantities. Therefore, as you have heard, it is used in making assays in order to know exactly what quantity of the substance of silver or gold is in copper and lead or in ores, as well as in that melted material which remains among the charcoal and ashes. In short, it is the measure by which you have the certainty and safety of knowing that you have not been deceived by art or by your workmen, who had no other interest than their simple wages. Many workmen are found who are so untrustworthy that they no sooner get control of a thing than they think up some fraud, and even though some know that they must give an accounting they do not restrain themselves, although sometimes they would perhaps act with greater security and more deception than they do if they did not fear detection. IN 1857 the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company, whose main line extended from Philadelphia to Pottsville, Pennsylvania, with branches into the coal regions of Schuylkill County, made a contract with the Fairmount Rolling Mill, at Philadelphia, for the rerolling of some four thousand tons of iron rails. The essential features of the agreement were that the old rails should be piled with puddled iron and rolled into flats for the rail pile, which latter was to be of a section seven inches square, and after being heated, and reduced, by rolling, to a bloom of a section about five inches by six inches, was to be reheated, before being finished into the rail of the T pattern, four inches high, weighing sixty-four pounds per yard. Great care was exercised in the execution of this contract, and the rails being distributed over all parts of the road, gave general satis¬faction by their excellent wear. Five years afterward, the principal proprietor and manager of the Fairmount Rolling Mill was elected President of the Reading Railroad, and very many of the rails made under his supervision were still in use in the tracks of the company, of which he had just assumed the management. His first efforts were, therefore, directed to the procuring of more rails of the same quality wherewith to replace those worn out. Here he encountered some trouble, makers refusing to bid because of the details in the specification, the required reheating being the objectionable feature, for which it was generally intimated they would not be sufficiently remunerated for the increased labor, extra coal consumed, and the changes necessary from the established methods of working. Most of the new rails were, therefore, bought, and the old rails rerolled without regard to any particulars as to the manner of piling, heating, etc., each manufacturer furnishing what he deemed the best article possible for the money. In discussing the petroleum products situation the first thing that comes to mind is "what is happening to gasoline." Is the consumption increasing? How is the export market? What about imports? Are stocks on hand too high? Have we produced too much? This paper will attempt to answer these questions. Consumption of gasoline (motor fuel) in the United States in spite of the depression and the chaotic conditions of many industries has increased during 1931 about 2 per cent over 1930. This favorable factor was offset by a severe contraction in exports, which fell off about 30 per cent from 1930. This drop in exports was so large that very little more export business was done than in 1926 or 1927. Taking all demand combined, there was a decrease from the peak year of 1930 of nearly 11,000,000 bbl., amounting to slightly over 2 per cent. The units of the industry, though, should have expected some decrease and governed themselves accordingly. Let us see what they did. They reduced imports over 3,000,000 bbl., which helped. Production was cut 3,000,000 bbl., but this was not enough, so that stocks increased 1,800,000 bbl. whereas during the previous year stocks were reduced 2,500,000 bbl. It is apparent, therefore, that something was done to keep the industry in balance in regard to gasoline, but not enough. If the year had ended on Sept. 30, we could have said that production had been cut 19,000,000 bbl. and stocks had been reduced from the previous year, but the excessive production during the last three months of the year changed everything. It is a strange thing and worthy of note that the price of gasoline fell to its lowest levels when apparently the greatest improvement was being made, and that during the last quarter of the year prices started to improve, when, in spite of an improvement in total demand which approximated 1930, an excessive production caused an uneconomic condition to set in. Stocks on hand on Dec. 31 were unquestionably too high, possibly 10,000,000 bbl. more than was needed for a strong condition to obtain.
