A multistage mixer-settler extractor described in earlier hydrodynamic studies was simulated on a computer. A mass transfer mechanism was derived based on a pseudo distribution constant and a pseudo first-order rate constant. The constants were adjusted to give the proper output concentrations and proper form of the stage-wise concentrations. The results obtained by computer simulation of start-up conditions show very good agreement with experimental data. A second simulation was constructed which demonstrated that the model can be greatly simplified and still yield good results.

In 1944, in the Texas Panhandle, 245 oil wells were drilled with a total daily initial production of 32,886 bbl., representing an average initial production of 134 bbl, per well. This was an increase over 1943 of 121 wells drilled, and an increased initial production of 13,861 barrels. On Dec. 31, 1944, the field was operating on an allowable of 113,567 bbl. per day, but actually was producing 85,539 bbl. per day from the 5901 oil wells. The tota1 production for the year was 33,439,436 bbl., bringing the cumulative total to 5.04,537,048 barrels. Earnings of engineers in the period 1956 to 1958 continued the upward trend observed in the previous survey interval, 1953 to 1956. The overall median (all graduates) was $6500 in 1953, $7750 in 1956 (a 19 pct upstep or about 6.5 pct annually), and $8750 in 1958 (up 13 pct from 1956 or 6.5 pct average yearly). The latter represents an increase from mid-1956 to mid-1958. For this same two-year span the Consumer Price Index rose 1.5 pct and the Average Gross Weekly Earnings for Production (Manufacturing) climbed close to 10 pct. Median earnings for the major classifications studied are presented in Table I. The increase in engineering earnings are not distributed equally among the various activity classifications or among the experience levels of the survey. Summary results of the changes of the median lines for the major divisions are presented in Table 11. Data in this table are approximations- dollars are rounded to the nearest $50 unit and percentages to the nearest full percentage.

THE integrated intensity X-ray method of meas-uring retained austenite concentrations in hardened plain carbon or low alloy steels as proposed by Averbach and Cohen1,2 has the advantages of being a highly sensitive and precise quantitative method. The various phases of this method have been studied and several modifications have been developed which aid not only in reducing the time required per determination, but which also increase the possible accuracy of the method. A fundamental step in the original calculation procedure is to plot V.A(?) curves for austenite and martensite and to obtain VM/VA ratios from these curves.' LIX 34 liquid ion exchange reagent, one of a totally new class of metal extractants, is discussed in terms of its properties. Specifically, these properties include improved selectivity for copper and greater recovery. Some comparisons to the well known General Mill's LIX 64N have been made. Particular emphasis is given to treating solutions containing very low copper values and high impurity levels.

The separate outputs of Burma and India in 1937 were 274,664,365 gal. valued at £4,474,147 and 75,657,857 gal. valued at £1,030,591, respectively. The corresponding figures for the year 1938 were 263,823,-265 gal. valued at £3,766,810 and 87,082,371 gal. valued at £1,234,563, respectively, which is a slight increase in total quantities but a fall in value for the combined outputs of Burma and India. The appreciable increase from India in 1938 is due to an increase of over 11 million gallons from Attock and a little from Digboi, while the decrease from Burma is due to a fall of nearly 9 million gallons from Yenangyaung, over 3 million gallons from Yenangyat (and Lanywa) and half a million gallons from Minbu (Table 1). The 'amount' of gasoline produced from natural gas during the year 1938 was 10,587,291 gal. in Burma and 496,163 gal. in the Punjab.

Engineering education for the mining industry has been undergoing a gradual change in recent years, to an extent that many employers may not realize. The result of this change is that the new graduate comes to his first employment with very little knowledge that is immediately valuable in operations. He is in fact, simply "half-baked" and needs much education on the job before his schooling will pay out in any significant way. To the employer who fails to recognize this, and fails to give the necessary training to finish the educational job, the modern graduate is likely to be unsatisfying. Moreover, the young fellow's future competence will be impaired. However, to the employer who assumes the educational burden, the effort should pay out as the half-baked products, after a few years, ought to be more useful than their predecessors and should have a greater potential to solve problems or cope with change. The reasons for this development are given below in the foreword to a questionnaire survey circulated by the SME Committee for On-the-Job Training.

(communication to the Secretary *).-It has long been known that sulphur and oxygen react upon crude oils, removing hydrogen and thereby creating unsaturated hydrocarbons which unite with each other, producing heavier forms. Dr. Rogers now finds that the percentage of sulphur in the oils of several fields in California is roughly proportional to the specific gravity of the oil. This additional proof is most welcome. It is rather surprising, , in that the impression had prevailed that practically all the reacting sulphur escaped from the oil as hydrogen sulphide, and did not remain in combination with the oil. It would be interesting to know what part of the sulphur-plotted by Dr. Rogers is in solution as free sulphur and hydrogen sulphide, and what part is, in more complex compounds, such as thiophanes, etc.

The various ion exchange reactions occurring during restoration of formations contaminated with ammonia during in situ uranium leaching are reviewed. Data are presented on the restoration of a previously leached laboratory packed column wing lime saturated brine. Although this restoration fluid selectively and effectively removed the ammonia, 24.5 pore volumes are required to reduce the ammonia concentration from 500-3 mg/L (29- 0.18 gr per gal). The essence of NaCl in the restoration fluid at levels in formation water is beneficial in improving the selectivity of the system for NH4+ removal and reducing Ca + + ion consumption

The United States Employment Office of the Department of Labor, of which the division of engineering and education, under the direction of A. H. Krom, maintains an office at 29 La Salle Street, Chicago, Ill., is engaged in a classification of engineers in order to make their services more readily available in case of need. We have received a form used by this division, on which it requires only a very little time to indicate one's particular line of work, his experience and the salary that he desires. We have been asked to impress upon members of the Institute the distinct advantages that come through registration. Filling out the blank entitles an engineer to free employment service, provides him with direct contact with the Government, supplies him with information in regard to engineering affairs, and helps him to become successful in his profession. The Government wishes every technical man to register, so that it may know the strength and location of the engineering reserve. It is therefore the duty of every patriotic engineer, whether he needs a position or not, to register at once. Blanks can be obtained by addressing the office above noted.

Replacement of active groups in corn starch, as shown by results of the starch derivatives tested, impairs rather than improves the value of corn starch as a selective iron oxide depressant. Increased ability to depress iron oxides is generally accompanied by a parallel ability to depress quartz. PEARL starch, a corn starch prepared with a minimum of alteration, is a good selective depressant for iron oxide minerals.' From what is known of the complex chemistry of corn starch, there is evidence that it consists of a mixture of saturated giant polymeric molecules, both straight and branch-chained, the constituents consisting of glucose units with hydroxyl radicals as active or polar groups. Since the discovery of the first-known rare earth elements more than a century ago, these metals have always been of academic interest. It is not so well known, however, that a rather stable, respectably large industry based on rare earths and their related materials has been in operation for more than 60 years. Rare earths, of course, are the elements having atomic numbers 57 through 71--lanthanum through lutetium in the periodic table. The most important commercial members of this group are mixtures of the lower atomic-numbered rare earths, and cerium. Although yttrium is not a rare earth, it occurs with rare earths and its properties are so similar to them that. it must be included in a discussion of these elements. In addition, thorium is important to most producers of rare earths because their ores generally contain this element. Thorium extractive metallurgy and technology is closely related to rare earth chemistry due to the frequent similarity of properties.

Industrial minerals deposits present sampling and grade control problems not normally encountered in metal mining operations. No longer are industrial minerals simply crude ground mineral products but are in fact high purity chemical raw materials. Operators of industrial minerals mines and processing plants now must meet increasingly stringent specifications established by the consumer of the final products. Meeting these stringent specifications requires not only sophisticated processing techniques but equally important careful sampling and grade or quality control at the mine. A well-trained geological staff can assure an adequate supply of uniformily high quality feed to the processing plant. In the final analysis this results in significantly higher operating profits.

The techniques of testing the physical properties of green pellets produced in a batch balling test are described. It has been found that these physical properties, i.e. drop resistance, wet compressive strength, and plastic deformation under load, are generally related to the moisture content of the wet balls. A "criterion" method of analyzing data from a series of batch tests is discussed. This method facilitates the comparison of results of various test series. A time-sharing computer program, which correlates the test data from a batch series, generates the "criterion" values for subsequent comparison and analysis, and produces X, Y plots of the various moisture-strength relationships, is presented. Examples of computer output and use of the "criterion" evaluation method are given.

BERYLLIUM, magnesium, zinc and cadmium, together with mercury, constitute a coherent sub-group of the periodic system and these metals, excepting mercury, have been studied in sufficient detail by the new X-ray diffraction methods to prove their common adherence to the hexagonal close-packed type of crystal structure with a progressive increase in axial ratio as we pass through the group from beryllium to cadmium. The first four columns of Table 1 summarize the data on crystal structure of these metals reported in the International Critical Tables.1 The last two columns are based on results obtained in the present investigation. [ ] Twinning has often been observed in zinc and cadmium.
