The technique of hard facing can be a quick and economical means of prolonging wear-life of many metals, but maintenance personnel must first select the proper alloy from the hundred that are available. Even then, roper selection is effective only when it is properly applied by the welder. To complete the successful weld, several hints are offered:

Nothing has disturbed the copper- lead-zinc producers in recent years more than smelter tolerances set by some states. What hurt most, copper spokesmen told the Government, was the Government's own erroneous estimates of smelter pollution controls. Government charts indicated that 23 firms smelting copper, lead and zinc may need to invest about $108 million by fiscal 1976 to control stack emissions. The copper industry's independent study, however, indicates that the required controls could cost as much as $550 million to install and $200 million a year to operate.

Long pipelines handling suspended solids find wide use throughout the mining industry. In phosphate, iron ore, and clay mining; in hydraulic stripping of overburden; in tailing disposal; and in transferring concentrates between plants pipeline transport may prove cheapest material handling method. One drawback is necessity for providing attendance at booster stations, both for control and for protection of pumping equipment from sudden surges and failures. Thiele Kaolin Co. in Georgia has come up with an installation where instrumentation does this job automatically, efficiently, and economically.

There is an ongoing need for the abstracting and coding of new information in the energy and environmental studies field for addition to the BIRS system. There are approximately 3000 bibliographic entries coded into the BIRS system. The bibliographic retrieval system was designed to be run by the general data management System 2000. The information system with entries of coal research, land reclamation and other energy and environmental studies is up and on line. As more entries are coded they are loaded into the system.

The method of spectral transparency was investigated. A device for measuring particle sizes based on this method was developed, tested and applied. The device affords measurements of particle size distribution in the range from 0.1 to 4 µm. It proved possible to measure sizes not only of spherical particles but also of non- spherical ones. The spectral range in which it is necessary to determine transparency for particle size measurements was found.

In most mines the major contribution to the dust exposure of miners arises from rock hand- ling. Scooptrams are frequently used and produce 8 to 1300 mg of respirable dust for each ton of ore loaded. It is shown that sprays at drawpoints are not fully effective in wetting the rock and suggestions for improved wetting techniques are given. Techniques for improved dust control by ventilation and local filtration are described. The problem of dust from ore- passes and dumps on tramming levels are outlined.

RECENTLY, much interest has been generated in materials that undergo martensitic phase transformations on straining.')' While it is undoubtedly true that a large amount of ductility can be obtained at rather high strength levels, the question of the general way in which the phase transformation affects the plane strai fracture toughness, as measured by the parameter KIC, has yet to be answered. Let us consider a material that contains a sharp crack as shown in Fig. 1, and is subjected to a tensile stress 00. This paper describes the use of the magnetometer, under geological direction, in exploration of the Sudbury nickel district. The writer's experience at Falconbridge has led him to the belief that only through detailed work, and by careful correlation of both geological and geophysical results, can geophysical prospecting methods be applied successfully to mining exploration problems. In a recent publication in the SME Transactions of September, 1975, Volume 258, entitled "Potential for Further Lowering Sulfur in Intensively Cleaned Coal at Mines", the writer discussed: (1) technical findings useful for the management of reserves to further lower sulfur in intensively cleaned coal, and (2) a future coal preparation plant concept for the intensive cleaning of sulfur. The purpose of this technical note is to ( I ) illustrate the nomographs that can be formed when recovery is phased in with previous work, (2) make note of the powerful potential for predicting future cleaning performance in unmined areas, and (3) discuss resulting mathematical interrelationships.

As discussed in the economics section of this article, the main processing consideration is whether manganese will be recovered, as this has major implications for reagent consumption. Nodule processing can be classified into three sections; smelting, roasting, and leaching. Many patents have been issued for various stages of these techniques. Since extensive laboratory and pilot plant testing is continuing, it is certain that some companies are close to full-scale commercial processes. Published data does not include all of the possible concepts for nodule treatment. In fact, one may suspect that published flowsheets are those that have been rejected or have since been extensively modified.

In an effort to improve coal-mine safety, a spectrum analyzer was used to make a detailed examination of the vibration frequencies produced by tapping a mine roof. We show that spectral analysis can be used to distinguish between "solid" and "drummy" roofs to a degree approaching that of the human ear, but it can reveal little about roof-slab thickness or attachment. We recommend research into the utility of augmenting human hearing in roof testing and into utilizing microseismic emissions to help assess roof integrity.
