McCosh, Coatbridge, Scotland (written discussion*).-It is well known in Great Britain that oven operators in the United States have been able to reduce the coking time much below European standards by the employment of higher temperatures. Our linings have always been the factor that has prevented our doing the same, and it would be of much interest to coke-oven operators here if Mr. Blauvelt would give a typical analysis of the bricks his company uses for the linings of its ovens, and if he could see his way to send me a sample so that I could have the texture examined, I should personally be very much obliged. The lining brick which my company has found most successful is of a ganister variety, and has the following analysis: Silica, 80.8 per cent.; alumina and iron oxide, .17.8 per cent.; lime, 0.8 per cent.; magnesia, 0.07 per cent.; but with this brick the least carelessness on the gas regulator's part may destroy the lining. It would also be of interest if Mr. Blauvelt could give the temperatures of the air leaving these generators and also of the oven flues.

INTRODUCTION The real problem is finding the "appropriate" financing sources by matching the risk and reward expectations of the various classes of investors and lenders. Generally, lenders who advance funds temporarily are interested in assuming only limited risk and conversely expect to earn only a limited reward. The equity owners on the other hand, are expected to take most of the risk of the enterprise, but should receive a reward commensurate with that risk. In particular they will receive the benefit of the company's increase in net worth over time. MINE DEVELOPMENT CYCLE Consider the development cycle of a mining project beginning with rank wildcat exploration (Figure 1) [ ] Just as different professionals must be utilized at different stages, so must different funding sources be used at different points in the pipeline. Lack of a system in scheduling the replacement of capital equipment can result in emergency purchases of units which may later be found unsuitable for the job. New York Trap Rock Corp., which produces crushed stone for use as construction aggregate, was faced with just such a situation some years ago. The company replaced capital equipment only when machinery in use was no longer serviceable, or when there was an obvious need for different equipment. Operating and maintenance costs were generally neglected because an efficient method was lacking. New York Trap Rock has four plants located along the Hudson River, all within 70 miles of New York City. Crushed stone output-6 million tons a year-is moved to markets in metropolitan New York, New Jersey, and Long Island areas by water transport. Customers are contractors with ready-mix concrete and asphalt plants located on the water.

Since coal is one of the largest cost items in the production of electricity, its analysis for heat value and composition has been the subject of intensive study. Sampling started with crude hand methods, out of the railroad car or barge or from moving conveyor discharge, and progressed to reliable mechanical in-plant sampling systems. The mechanical system takes its sample from a falling stream of coal such as a conveyor discharge or crusher discharge hopper. But this has a disadvantage in that the identity of the coal is lost. Coal is shipped to the user in train-loads, often made up of shipments from various mines. When the cars are dumped into hoppers and the coal conveyed to the power station, the various shipments become mixed because residual coal remains in hoppers and chutes.

A gasoline recovery plant at a refinery is usually considered such a profitable investment, and performs so well apparently, even under conditions of low efficiency, that frequently but little attention is given it to make it perform at top efficiency. Further, there are so many other units in a refinery that demand most of the available attention that the recovery plant is left to shift for itself. "It seems to be doing pretty well so why bother with it," is sometimes the attitude toward it. On the other hand, there is no reason why it should not be placed on the same high plane of efficiency as that of many natural gasoline plants. The two problems, gasoline recovery from natural gas and gasoline recovery from refinery gases, have much in common. At some refineries the gasoline recovery plant produces too much gasoline, because too low a pressure is carried on the gathering lines and the condenser boxes are robbed of gasoline that they can and should take care of, and as a consequence the refiner fools himself into believing that his recovery plant is an extraordinarily fine unit, when on the contrary it may be working at low efficiency insofar as doing its rightful job is concerned.

Although the similarity between puzzolana, or trass, and blastfurnace slag, as seen by comparison of the analyses, is a well-known fact, blast-furnace slag has not been used commercially as a substitute for those cementing materials. The reason, the writer apprehends, lies in the fact that unless such slag is disintegrated or subdivided by rolls, the process must either be too costly, or the material is not in a fit and proper condition for the purpose. In order to produce a reliable slag cement, the slag must be ground together with the lime into an impalpable powder. The subdivided slag must, therefore, be perfectly dry, and, at the same time, friable. The stronger the hydraulic properties of the lime, the more reliable the slag cement will be, and practice has proved, that the slag from a gray-iron furnace gives the best results. The slag cement which has given the results shown in the annexed table, under pressure tests, was composed of six parts of slag, from a blast-furnace producing No. 3 foundry iron, and one part of lime, of medium hydraulic properties. The above-described class of cement bears storing as long as most Portland cements, and the cheapness of its production is self-evident.

AMONG the more interesting peculiarities of plutonium is the brittleness of its room-temperature monoclinic phase, a, since the adjacent higher-temperature phase (transformation temperature, 112C), ß, is also monoclinic but very ductile. Other elements, e.g., tin and manganese, have phases which exhibit similar contrast in plasticity. However, it was considered unusual when the a phase which has less than 0.1 pet tensile elongation' was rolled to 90 pct reduction in thickness at room temperature.' Since brittle behavior often is a structure-sensitive property, but could also be the result of covalent-type bonding, further experiments reported here have been conducted in an attempt to illuminate the problem. Electrorefined plutonium was rolled under various conditions and examined to determine the strain-hardening characteristics and also to determine under what conditions rolling could be performed. The rolling mill had 6.0-in.-diam heatable rolls with a variable roll speed (6.25 to 445 in. per min). In spite of its recognized irregularities, the cyanide-assay for copper has always been popular among volumetric methods, being easy and rapid, and reasonably accurate when the solution tested contains nothing but pure copper and ammonium salts. In order to secure this condition, however, especially in operati~ig on low-grade ores, tailings and slags of complex composition, it is the practice to precipitate the copper from the ore-solution,—usually by means of metallic zinc or aluminum. The copper thus precipitated in the metallic form must be dissolved again; and the separa tion is never, in practice, complete, since an appreciable amount of the copper remains behind in the first solution, and the second solution always contains some of the other metals of the gangue; so that the result is at best but partially satisfactory. The four papers making up this symposum have been prepared especially for those who have no knowledge of seismograph prospecting. To many people mathematics is a formidable subject, and many are discouraged from studying seismograph prospecting under the mistaken assumption that the mathematical requirements are severe. In the papers presented here there is not a single mathematical equation. We believe that considerable competence in dealing with some of the most important problems of this work can be attained without any mathematical training whatever. At the present time, there is a real need for interpretation of results by persons thoroughly competent to bring geologic experience and imagination to bear on data that are subject to multiple interpretation from a strictly physical viewpoint. Likewise, those charged with the responsibility of planning seismograph exploration campaigns would do well to become familiar with as much as possible of the technical aspests of the work. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. Using a tool and using its product are two different things. One does not use an automatic screw-threading machine when he buys a box of screws at the hardware store. Neither does the geologist

About eighty miles north of the city of Antofagasta, Chile, located just below the Tropic of Capricorn, there spreads a wide desert area where copper oxide outcrops can be seen with the naked eye. Numerous old mining works and dump heaps with the green of atacamite and chrisocolla shining in the blazing sun, attest to the work done by miners in the beginning of this century. The dry desert air preserves the footstep marks, paths and trails of old cartwheels from years back. The mining area known as Michilla and Panizos Blancos, is located on the high plateau at 3000 ft above sea level. Around 1920 a Bleichert ropeway was built, which carried ores from the best known mine to a wharf at the Michilla bay. High grade silicious ores were shipped to the Gatico Smelter further north or to smelters in the United States or Japan.

During 1928 low prices in the East greatly restricted the Atlantic market for California petroleum. The situation was made difficult by only partial control of production. The month of December is estimated in the figures presented here and it is hoped that the differences in the final figures will be immaterial. Daily averages are used throughout. Production Daily average crude production for 1928 was 633,942 bbl., very little more than 1927. Natural gasoline production was 35,453 bbl. daily and the supply (crude and natural gasoline) was 669,395 bbl. However, potential supply was 785,621 bbl. daily, 47,436 more than that of 1927. This is accounted for by more production being shut in so that 116,000 bbl. daily was conserved in 1928 which would otherwise have been produced. Fig. 1 shows production by months for 1928. ThE distribution of gold is obviously much wider than is Commanly supposed. Resides the usual matrices, vehicles, or associates, such as quartz, pyrite, chalcopyrite, etc., I find it occurring in quite a range of common rocks. For example, at the Rhodes mine, in Gaston County, a body of 9 to 12 feet of decoroposed, light-gray gneiss was worked together with the strings of quartz, and yielded from six to ten dollars to the ton. A mine in Moore County yields its gold mainly from a feldspathic schist. In the famous King's Mountain mine, in Gaston County, the gold is obtained not only from the seams of quartz in a blue, hydromicaceous schist, but a 60-foot ledge of grayish-blue, fine-grained, schistose limestone is quarried out bodily and sent to the stamps. It is gold-bearing throughout. In Montgomery County the singular concretionary, conglomeritic, quartzite schist, which contains Emmons's palceotrochis, is gold-bearing over wide tracts of country. This fact was noticed by Dr. Emmons. But a still more striking and significant fact is, that a large part of the gold of Montgomery, Davidson, and Randolph counties,

US underground mine production of nonfuel minerals was 153 million tons of crude ore in 1971, according to a recent US Bureau of Mines report compiled by Dravo Corp. Underground capacity includes all nonfuel mineral commodities and is distributed into three general categories: (1) metallic ores; (2) nonmetallic ores; and (3) construction materials, such as clay, sandstone, and limestone. All three categories are produced by a combination of open-pit and underground methods. While US underground mining represents only 5.9% of total domestic capacity, it is significant in the types of products produced. Domestic supplies of potash, trona, A lead, zinc, sulfur, and fluorspar are almost exclusively recovered from underground mines, as well as a significant portion of the gold, silver, molybdenum, and salt supply.
