The process of recrystallization has not as yet been explained satisfactorily. Some definite conclusions could be drawn from recent investigations, such as, for example, that recrystallization is a process of nucleus formation and crystal growth1 and that the orientations of the nuclei correspond to some fragments of the original crystals, which have been considerably distorted during deformation.2 There are, however, a number of metals and alloys crystallizing in the face-centered cubic system, which form a particularly simple orientation if recrystallized as a sheet.3 Such a shect is almost a single crystal with the cubic axes parallel to the rolling, transverse, and normal directions of the sheet. This preferred cubic or (100) orientation of the recrystallized sheet has been considered to be very different from the rolling structure of the same metals,4 but there are two reasons why this last supposition remains open to controversial discussion. The first reason is academic: In practically all cases except the one mentioned above, close correlations and similarities between rolling and annealing orientations have been observed; for instance, in iron and steel sheet.6 Secondly, no deformed metal actually forms a simple orientation. In any thoroughly investigated case a number of different orientations and considerable scattering or deviations from the ideal orientations have been found.6 It is generally true that investigations on single crystals have shown that a definite orientation is approached in stretching or in compression of an originally undisturbed crystal.7 In the special cases, however, where the initial orientation was close to an important crystallographic direction that differed from the final "ideal" orientation, the resulting orientation changed very little by deformation, staying somewhere in the vicinity of the initial orientation.8 Such deviations

Front Range, Colorado: The majority of the rocks comprising the Front Range of Colorado are pre-Cambrian schists, gneisses, and intrusives which have been elevated to form part of the Southern Rocky Mountain physiographic province. The region is noted mainly for its production of gold and silver, but ores of tungsten, fluorspar, uranium, copper, and iron have been worked. Geological literature1-' describes pitchblende and other radioactive minerals occurring at Jamestown, Boulder County; Central City, Gilpin County; and Lawson, Clear Creek County (fig. 1). As far as the writer is aware, uranium has been found only in the portion northeast of Lawson. Silver Deposits at Caribou Hill: The historic silver deposits of Caribou Hill, located approximately half way between Jamestown and Central City, and 35 miles in a straight line northwest of Denver, appeared particularly intriguing as an area to prospect for uranium for the following reasons: here exists an isolated group of high-grade silver veins in the center of a mining district containing occurrences of uranium, and, in two of the well-known uranium deposits of the world, those at Great Bear Lake, Canada, and Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, uranium is associated with silver in similar fissure veins. An exploration program, conducted in the spring of 1945, directed special attention to Caribou Hill and was rewarded with the discovery of heavy, canary-yellow stained specimens of'pitchblende. The veins are confined to shear zones cutting a north-south, elongated quartz-monzonite stock of Tertiary (?) age lying in the axis of a major anticline of the Idaho Springs biotite schist, the oldest pre-Cambrian formation in the district. The stock is one and three-quarter miles long by more than a mile wide, and Caribou Hill is approximately at its center. The ore zones vary in width from a few inches to 15 ft, and one structure has been traced for a length of over 4000 ft. The ore minerals are galena, sphalerite, ruby silver, native silver, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and pitchblende. They occur most common-

During the year 1878-79, Anton Eilers, who was then interested in the lead smelting and refining business near Salt Lake City, Utah, made a somewhat radical departure from the regular practice at that time, which was to use but little lime in the slag, with a high percentage of iron. Lime was not only a cheaper flux than iron, but it enabled the metallurgist to make a more siliceous slag, an economical advantage in smelting where the smelting companies had to purchase either iron or lime to neutraiize the excess silica, and penalize the ore shippers accordingly. The larger amount of both lime and silica in the slag also made it of lighter specific gravity, and a better separation of the metals and mattes was secured. This change in the formation of slags for lead smelting was brought about by Anton Eilers, prior to the Leadville mining excitement of 1879.. We must also give Mr. Eilers credit for the general introduction of the hollow water-cooled cast-iron jacket for the blast furnace. Again referring to the use of more lime and less iron in the formation of slags, there is no doubt but that it prevents the formation of a great many so-called "sows" in the lead crucible, such as were made in the early history of lead smelting in the Rocky Mountains; these sows consisted of lead, iron, arsenic, sulphur, copper, and other metals, including gold and silver, mixed with unconsumed fuel, and often, after vain attempts to cut them up or melt them to a suitable size for handling, were buried in the slag dumps to get them out of sight. Another advantage derived from the adoption of high-lime slags when smelting ore containing arsenic is the production of less speiss (a byproduct heavier than matte, resulting from careless operation of the furnace, in the lead being driven out of the crucible and sows built up). This speiss, while usually not as rich in precious metals as matte made at the same time, is too valuable to be thrown away; but it is difficult to treat, and it was thrown away or piled on the slag dumps in the pioneer days of lead smelting in this country. INVESTIGATIONS on the above topic have recently been published by Shapiro and Kraussl and Jana and wayman in this journal and by Kessler and Pitsch.- Parts of the results in these papers are in good agreement with each other but there are also some results which are substantially different. The main points of these differences shall be briefly discussed in this communication. Shapiro and Krauss' measured single-surface traces of the habit planes of reversed austenite plates formed within the martensite crystals and deduced from these measurements two distinct habit planes A = (0.174; 0.309; 0.935) and B = (0.375; 0.545; 0.749) within 3 deg. Kessler and pitsch4 found instead by two-surface analysis7 one habit plane n = {0.23; 0.62: 0.75) with a real scatter of 6 deg. The latter observation of a single habit plane apart from a certain scatter is in agreement with most of the investigations of martensite transformations. The differences between these two results are so great that they cannot be explained by experimental error. The purpose of this communication is to show that the A- and B-poles of Shapiro and Krauss are due to an erroneous interpretation of a single-surface trace analysis. The difficulties in the interpretation of such single-surface trace analyses are due to the high symmetry of cubic lattices, from which it follows that there are in general twenty-four equivalent possibilities of plotting a single-surface trace in a pole figure. All these possibilities must be taken into account, when putting different traces from different plates together in order to construct the habit plane. Alternatively the poles of all the traces may be plotted in a unit triangle. This is done in Fig. 1 with twenty-nine traces of different reversed austenite plates, all of this were measured by Shapiro and Krauss in the same plane of a single martensite ther traces taken from Fig. 13 in the Shapiro and Krauss paper' which were determined by electron diffraction. The traces in Figs. 1 and 2 have to be compared with the habits A, B, and n which are under discussion. Therefore the great circles of the poles A, B, and n are plotted in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 together with a 3-deg scatter region for poles A, B and a 6-deg scatter region for pole n. 9.1-1. Description and Basic Function. A conventional railroad haulage system for a surface mine performs the function of transporting the ore and/or waste out of the pit to a crushing plant or dump. Trains consisting of a locomotive and gondola or side-dump care suitable for loading by power shovels are used. Gondola cars are restricted to hauling ore as a rotary dumper is required to unload them. Side-dump cars are more versa- tile, being satisfactory for carrying both ore and waste; but because of their additional dumping mechanism they are likely to be more expensive to maintain (12). Also they weigh up to two times as much as a flat-bottom car of the same capacity, and, therefore, fewer cars can be hauled per train. Standard-gauge track is most commonly used. Track systems incorporate temporary track of low quality in areas where moves are frequent and permanent track of high quality on main lines. Rail haulage enabled open pit mining to establish its reputation, for efficiency. Prior to World War II it was the principal type of transportation used in large pits. Other successful surface mine haulage methods have been developed since that time. These have served to supplement railroad transportation, permitting selection of a method that is best adapted to the peculiar requirements of each mining project. 9.1-2. General Applicability and Controlling Physical Conditions. For handling rough rock, the shovel-train system is unexcelled (6). The ideal application is in a physically large, but not excessively deep, open pit mine from which the coarsely blasted ore and waste must be transported distances in excess of three miles. If, in addition, a high production rate is to be maintained, railroad haulage will probably afford a lower cost per ton transported than will any other haulage method. Relatively gentle

TheRe are many factors which control the ultimate production of oil and gas from a producing formation and the rate at which this production is obtained from any of the producing wells in the formation. The most important of these, and the one over which the greatest control can be exercised, is the differential pressure existing between the formation and the well bore. In producing any well by means of the gas-lift, it may be possible to change the flow tubing in a number of ways or vary the volume of circulating gas or air used for flowing the well, but if these operations, regardless of their magnitude, do not change the differential pressure between the producing sand and the well bore, they will in no way change the production of the well. If this statement is accepted as a fact, then all gas-lift or air-lift installations should be designed with but one object in view; namely, a means by which we can economically control very wide ranges of differential pressures between the formation and the well bore. Factors of Production In gas-lift production from any given formation, there are four major factors which govern the magnitude of the differential: (I) the depth of the well; (2) type and size of flow tubing; (3) volume of the circulating air or gas, and (4) physical properties of the oil-gas mixture after it has reached the well. The first of these factors is uncontrollable and does not vary. The other three are controllable within certain limits. The degree to which the last three factors can be controlled will cntircly govern the length of life of the well while on the lift, the lifting cost, and the daily production. It will also govern to some extent the ultimate production from the wells or leases producing by this method. These four factors will be discussed in detail in another part of this paper. Before proceeding further, a review of the present general practice in Texas, elsewhere than in the Gulf Coast region, will be given.

I have in a previous communication called the attention of the Institute to the geognostical relations of the crystalline iron ores belonging to the Eozoic racks of North America, at which time I noticed (1) those associated with the gneisses of the Laurentian series, (2) those of the crystalline schists of the Huronian, as seen in Northern Michigan and in many localities along the Appalachians; (3) those of Southeastern Missouri associated with petrosilex porphyries and schistose rocks, and presumed to be nearly of the same age with those of the Huronian schists; and (4) the highly titaniferous ores of the Norian or Labradorian series from Essex County, N. Y., and from various parts of Canada. It may here be remarked that, although the presence of titanium is most marked in the Norian ores, this objectionable element is sometimes found in the schistose ores of the Huronian, and to a lesser extent in certain Laurentian magnetites. The ores of each of these geological divisions have their individual peculiarities, which serve to distinguish them to such a degree that the magnetites and specular ores of the Laurentian are as dissimilar to those of the Huronian as are the crystalline silicated rocks of the two series. As it happens that these mineralogical dissimilarities correspond to diflerences in composition and in adaptability to different processes of manufacture, which, in the present condition of the iron industry, are objects of special consideration to metallurgists, it will be seen that these geognostical distinctions become of great practical importance. During the past year I was desired by the Geological Commissioners of Pennsylvania to devote a few weeks to certain geological studies in the eastern part of the State, in the course of which I was enabled to make, with regard to its crystalline iron ores, some observations to which I desire to call the attention of the Institute. I may mention, in passing, that the great South Mountain belt, from the Schuylkill to the Delaware, is composed of Laurentian rocks, in which are found the characteristic ores of the series like those of the Highlands of New Jersey and New York, and of the Adiron-

The friction factor plot presented by Cornell and Katz4 and developed for the flow of fluids through consolidated formations has been directly adapted for handling fluid flow problems involvitrg both linear and radial flow. In this adaptation the friction factor plot is used directly for the solution of problems and thereby eliminates the use of conventional equations which are specific to laminar (Darcy) or turbutent flow. This upproach overcomes the disadvantages inherent in the use of these conventional equations. It eliminates the necessity of checking the type of flow occurring in order to identify the specific equation which must be used. In radial flow problems, because of the increasing mass velocity of the fluids as they approach the wellbore. the type of flow may no longer remain laminar. Consequently, it is necessary to use more than one equation in a problem and to identify the range over which each equation should be applied. Finally, in practice it has been found that much of the flow of gases through consolidated media occurs in a range that is neither laminar or turbulent. For this transitional region, no convenient equations are available. The method and presented friction factor plot are appficahle to both liquids and gases. INTRODUCTION The flow of fluids through unconsolidated media in packed beds has been treated extensively by a number of investigatorsl,2,3,5,7,8 Most of these studies present friction factors as a function of modified Reynolds number similar to those developed for conventional fluid flow through pipes. These friction factor plots are presented for linear flow; however, Elenbaas and Katz have extended these concepts to apply to radial flow. All of these studies on unconsolidated materials require a knowledge of packing properties such as sphericity. porosity, and particle diameter. Sphericity and particle diameter cannot be defined at the present time for consolidated formations such as those commonly found in gas or oil reservoirs. As a result many investigators have not utilized friction factors and Reynolds number in the study of fluid flow through consolidated media. However, Cornell and Katz4 present a plot (Fig. 1) for the flow of fluids through consolidated porous media, in which the friction factor defined as: The turbulence coefficient, P, is related to the formation permeability, K, as presented in Fig. 2. H. G. KNOX,* Norfolk, Va. (written discussion?).-There is one subject that Mr. Hobart seems to have inadvertently omitted from his very valuable paper, and that is corrosion. The shipbuilder, perhaps more than anyone else, has constantly to guard against it, our chief reliance being paint and galvanizing, where practicable. The corrodibility of a welded. joint is salt water must be determined before deciding whether this type of construction is to supersede riveting. At the present time, this question cannot be answered, although considerable work has been started in an attempt to arrive at a conclusion. The British Admiralty and several British shipbuilders have studied it extensively. Their experiments and conclusions have been very carefully followed and reported in this country by Naval Constructor Goodall of the British Navy. To date, these show that no undue fear need be felt from corrosion. At the Norfolk Navy Yard a series of plates welded with various electrodes were submerged in dilute sulfuric acid, such as is used in cleaning prior to galvanizing. While this test may not be conclusive in any quantitative way, it does show a marked difference in the corrodibility of welds made with different electrodes tinder different conditions. To thaw any conclusions from this accelerated this accelerated test would be, however, ill advised. In riveted joints, the exposed heads and points of the rivets always show the greatest tendency to corrode. This is clue to two reasons: first, as they are raised above the surrounding surface the paint is more susceptible to abrasion; and, second, electrolytic action is set up between rivet and plate. These same reasons lead us to expect a tendency of the welded joint to corrode. Various methods have been suggested for decreasing the probable inherent corrodibility of the weld, in addition to the customary coat of paint. These generally embody the introduction of alloys, principally copper; into the electrode material. Plating the electrode with copper is not effective in that the deposited copper segregates in the weld and actually increases the electrolytic action. As far as is known, no extensive test on the so-called copper-bearing alloy steels, which might be made up into electrodes, has been carried out, but when obtainable, electrodes of this alloy will be subjected to service tests.

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) IN a paper by Mr. Frank Firmstone, published in vol. iv, of the Transactions of the Institute, on "Comparison of Results from Open-topped and Closed-topped Furnaces," the regularity of the average grade of pig iron produced by the furnace under different conditions is expressed by means of a curve or diagram. The object of this note is to show that the graphic method, or that of representing variations by plotted curves or diagrams, is capable of a much more extended application to blast-furnace records, making a valuable auxiliary to the "furnace .book," and that by it the practical metallurgist may obtain at a glance information concerning the variations of the furnace during long periods, which could be found in the furnace book only after a tedious search. Plate XII is a graphic record of an anthracite blast furnace for one month. The table on page 554 gives the figures obtained from the furnace book, together with a record of temperature of the atmosphere, barometric pressure, and moisture in the air, which was obtained from a meteorological observatory not far from the furnace. In the records of a furnace, two of the variable qualities are final results, viz., the quantity of pig iron produced, and its grade; all the other variables are antecedent causes which produce the final results. Of these variable causes which contribute to the quantity of product and its grade, some are partially under the control of the furnace manager, others depend upon the state of the atmosphere, and still others are accidental. Of the first class are the character of the materials charged, and their relative proportions, their mechanical conditions, as wet or dry, large or small pieces, etc., the revolutions of the engine, the heat and pressure of blast, and the distribution of the charge. Of the second class are the number of pounds of air blown into the furnace for each stroke of the engine, the amount of moisture in the air, and the condition of the chimney draughts. These vary largely with the season of the year. Of the third. class is the leaking of a tuyere or a temporary stoppage. To keep a record of this kind for a whole year, it is only necessary to procure a sheet of common profile or cross section paper, about 38 inches long and 8 or 10 inches wide, with cross lines ruled about 0.1 of an inch apart. THE local auditorium of a little Alabama mining town was crowded with expectant men, women and children, as the bulletin board had announced the addition of visiting entertainers to supplement the local talent and motion pictures which usually made up the program of the regular monthly safety meeting. In the audience, near the stage, sat a group of bright-faced boys in boy scout uniforms, discussing the picture just completed. As the lights flashed on a crash and scream was heard from the outside, a shrill whistle and word of command from the scoutmaster, and five of the scouts ran out of the hall, while the mine super-intendent stepped on the stage and requested everyone to keep their seats. The scouts returned, three of them carrying a limp figure in their arms, while the other two cleared the doorway and aisle of excited spectators. They marched to the stage and, placing the apparently badly-injured boy on the floor, proceeded to give an expert demonstration of first aid to the injured. The scoutmaster then explained to the audience that the whole affair had been arranged for their benefit, and invited the local first-aid men to come up on the stage to examine and criticize the boys' work. This gave an opening for several talks on the value of first-aid training and accident prevention, which is the main object of the monthly meetings. This demonstration was given by the first-aid team of Troop One, and the entertainment was provided by members of Troop One and Twenty-eight of the Bir-mingham Scout Council, organized by the writer for the purpose of promoting interest in the welfare and safety meetings in the mining villages of the State. During the past year they have visited a number of such meet-ings and presented programs similar to the one men-tioned above. However, in order to assure a good attendance, entertainment features must also be pro-vided, and the serious part of the evening program was interspersed with excellent vocal and instrumental mu-sic, dancing and novelty acrobatic acts furnished by the visiting scouts. In addition to the numerous first-aid teams of the Birmingham Council, there are hundreds of scouts scat-tered throughout the mining district whose knowledge of first aid, safety first, life-saving, personal health and public health are a constant source of protection to their community. All of these subjects are covered by merit badge pamphlets and are required of an eagle scout.

To properly account for the various characteristics of drilling muds obtained in different areas and geological horizons, it is necessary to study the composition of the mud from a chemical and physical standpoint as determined by the proportions and activities of the various solid contituents that are present in various states of division. Briefly summarized, science teaches that there are three states of division into which these solid constituents or particles may be grouped: namely, the suspended state, the individual particles of which are known as suspensoids; the colloidal state, in which the individual particles are termed colloids; and the crystalloidal state, wherein the individual particles are held in true solution and are termed crystalloids. The suspended state is one wherein the particles are fairly large and are present as molecular complexes, having none of the properties of colloids or crystalloids. Since matter varies in physical character and in chemical activities with its state of division, these coarser suspensoids do not themselves materially affect the physical or chemical properties of the solution in which they are suspended. On the other hand, they are distinctly detrimental in drilling muds and it is desirable that they be removed. Under the general classification of suspensoids are included sand, gravel and cuttings which contribute nothing to the colloidal stability or other desirable properties of the drilling fluid. As the state of division approaches but does not reach a molecular simplification, the term "colloidal state" is used in describing this condition. The colloidal state arises when one form of matter is in a very fine state of division and is distributed through a second phase. The material in the finely divided state is called the dispersed phase, while the liquid in which it is dispersed is called the dispersive phase. These particles of matter are in a colloidal state and will not settle out from the dispersive phase so long as colloidal conditions are stable. Moreover, they exhibit the property of having an oscillating movement around a central position in solution (the Brownian movement). In the third state of division, the crystalloidal state, the individual particles are held in true solution and are usually present as single molecules or ions. IT has long been known that some metals are capable of being dispersed or dissolved in certain of their fused salts.' Davy' and Bunsen³ were among the first to observe that in some fused salt electrolyses, a highly colored, strongly reducing salt phase appeared in the neighborhood of the cathode. Later workers found that the current efficiency of the electrolysis was markedly reduced when such a phase appeared. It was also found that the strongly reducing salt could be made by melting the metal and normal salt together. Chemical analysis showed that in such salts the metal ion to anion ratio was always larger than in the normal salt. From such observations arose two different explanations of the nature of metal in salt solutions. When a solution of this type is quenched, it is possible to find small globules of metal in the salt. From this and other observations, Lorenz' and co-workers assumed the metal in salt solution to be a colloidal dispersion of metal in the fused salt and called it "metallnebel" or metal fog formation. They made a number of experiments to substantiate this point of view. Another school felt that when the metal dissolved it reduced the salt partially to a mixture or solution of normal salt and subsalt. Both of these ideas could explain the strong reducing character of the salt formed and the low current efficiency of the electrolysis. If either a metal colloid or a subsalt were formed at the cathode and diffused to the anode, it would be oxidized to the normal salt. Thus a cyclic process of oxidation and reduction could be set up conducting the current without giving rise to a net change in the system. These facts led the author to investigate some of the properties of metal in salt solutions with the hope of elucidating their nature further. Among the metal-salt systems that form metal in salt solutions most markedly are the alkaline earth metal-halide systems and cerium, bismuth, and cadmium halides. Other systems of halides, oxides and sulphides form such solutions to a lesser degree. The first work undertaken was a study of the temperature-composition diagrams of some of the systems." From such diagrams it would be possible to distinguish between a subhalide formation or a colloid. A subhalide should give rise to characteristic changes in the phase diagram, while a colloidal dispersion of metal in salt would not alter the freezing point of the salt. By courtesy of the officials of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad, I am permitted to publish the results of an examination made in 1887 and 1888 of' the country west of the Black Hills, and lying between the Black Hills and the foot-hills of the Big Horn Mountains in the northeastern part of Wyoming. With the exception of the country constituting the foot-hills, or the encircling ridge or rim of the Black Hills proper, all of this area is occupied by rocks of Cretaceous age. In the central part of the Black Hills are found the tin-bearing granites, the mica-schists, and gold-bearing slates, already so well known. Surrounding this central area of older rocks (which should be considered as the "Hills" proper) are the attenuated representatives of the Palzeozoic, dipping gently away from the Hills in every direction, overlaid by the gypsum-bearing Mesozoic, which here forms a bold high ridge or rim, completely encircling the Black Hills, and known as the inner ridge. Overlying, and apparently conformable to this, we find the Dakota sandstone, which likewise forms a prominent ridge or rim, known as the first or outer ridge. This is the formation which contains the coal now worked at the mines near Newcastle. It is also the formation in which the best oil-wells have been obtained in the "Stoakdale," or "Beaver," and the " Belle Fourche " oil-districts. Overlying it are the Colorado shales, forming the great plains drained by Beaver creek and the south fork of the Cheyenne river, and extending west to the Belle Fourche, near Donkey creek, where the overlying Fox Hill formation (thin) and the Laramie group, the great lignite-formation, are first seen. The Laramie group occupies the surface from the Belle Fourche at Donkey creek west to the foothills of the Big Horn mountains at Buffalo, an air-line distance of some seventy or eighty miles.

The technical papers of the last few years give numerous in stances of serious failures by cracking or rupture of soft steel boiler plates, marly of which have satisfactorily passed the rigid inspection and tests required by both Lloyds' Register and the Board of Trade in England. I speak of the inspecting department of Lloyds' and the Board of Trade, for we do not begin to have as systematic and intelligent work regularly done in this country as is done by these institutions in England. Tension-tests of this steel have given from 65,000 to 65,000 pounds per square inch tensile strength, with from 20 to 30 per cent. elongation in 8 inches. Chemical analyses have shown the steel to contain from 0.12 to 0.15 per cent. carbon, from 0.25 to 0.40 per cent. manganese, and from 0.03 to 0.05 per cent. phosphorus. All of these tests are considered normal, and, in the words of one of our members, " boiler-plates with these qualities ought not to fail." There are, however, several causes of failure in soft steel plates which, although the writer does not presume to ascribe to then], or either of them, any particular instance, are still dangerous, and ought to be guarded against much more carefully than in usual present practice. These causes are: 1. The hardening property of all steel. 2. Insufficient work from the ingot to the finished plates. 3. Temporary fiber in certain steels. 4. Internal strains caused by unequal work upon the material. Hardening.-The writer, in a paper read before the Institute in October, 1883," made the statement that soft .steel, no matter how low in carbon, would harden to a certain extent upon being heated red-hot and plunged into water, and that it hardened more when plunged into brine and less when quenched in oil, and gave the results of one experiment, merely as an illustration of many which had all confirmed the statement made. The illustration was a heat of open-hearth steel made by the . writer, of 0.15 per cent. carbon and 0.29 per cent. of manganese, which gave (he following results upon test-pieces from the same 1/4-thick plate.

The processes involved in turning a set of seismograph records into a geological structure map may be divided into three classes; (1) picking reflections on the records, to be used for the computations; (2) determining the basis on which the computations should be made in order to arrive at correct results; (3) making the necessary computations and plotting sections and maps. The first is usually done by the crew chief, or at least checked by him. The computing system usually originates in the head office, occasional consultations with the party chief providing modifications as necessary to meet special conditions. The computations and plotting are done by the party computer, with possibly one or two assistants if the calculations require much time. Picking the Rejleclions Marking of the reflections on the records is perhaps the most important step and the one most likely to determine the reliability of the final results. Making the "picks" is important because most of the problems that come up in practical work are connected with the problem of what can be done with poor records. The lack of any definite criteria by which to judge what are good and usable reflections is at the bottom of the difficulty. Give the same set of records to several people to mark and they will probably come out with a variation in the number of reflections per record that are deemed usable. With good records the correct picks are obvious to all, but with poor records experience seems to be the only reliable guide as to what picks are reliable and what are merely born of imagination and desperation. Experience in marking records and seeing how the structures eventually check out is more important than training in physics or geology. Different types of equipment and shooting methods may produce records quite different in appearance, from the same territory, and the computer can do his best work with records of a type on which he has had considerable experience, and has learned the limitations and shortcomings as well as the virtues of the data with which he is working. Reflections may be picked for dips only, in which case the particular reflection picked is not recognizable with certainty on records from any other spread. For the purpose of computing dips it is necessary that the reflection be marked on a11 or nearly all of the strings of the records, as

THE great Swedish export iron ore mines are Kiruna and Malmberget in the north above the Arctic circle and Grängesberg in Central Sweden, see Figs. 1 to 3. These mines exported in 1951 about 13 million metric tons of high grade iron ore and concentrates. The origin of these three ore fields seems to be the same. They are of pre-Cambrian age and are regarded as typical instances of primary eruptive ore that has thrust up as glowing masses of lava flow between two somewhat older beds of porphyry. Apparently the ore and the porphyry became segre. gated from common parent magmas by a process of differentiation. Despite the fact that the Kiruna orebody belongs to the earliest pre-Cambrian formation, it has been influenced to an unusually small extent by later metamorphosisms, apart from its having been set on edge through folding and wrenching off by a number of later faults. The Kiruna ore occurs along a stretch of more than 4 miles as a series of slabs or lenses sloping steeply toward the east and sandwiched between two beds of porphyry. The main orebody has a length of about 3 miles and an average width of 300 ft with a maximum of 600 ft. The dip varies from 65" to 45" toward the east and the known depth is 3000 ft, although magnetic surveys indicate it may be at least 6000 ft. Malmberget has undergone a more thorough transformation, having been pressed and crumpled into a meandering band of disconnected layers and lenses. The largest of the more connected bodies of ore, the Great Ore Layer, outcrops on a low mountain ridge and has a total length of about 4 miles and a maximum width of about 300 ft. The compositions of coexisting phases in the methane-propane-n-pentane system were determined at 160° and -2 20°F. throughout the two-phase region, at pressures above 500 lb. per sq. in. The experimental results permitted the calculation of gas-liquid equilibrium constants as well as the establishment of the critical behavior of this ternary system. Although many binary paraffin hydrocarbon systems have been investigated, the experimental work relating to the phase behavior of ternary paraffin hydrocarbon mixtures at elevated pressures is relatively scarce, being limited to a study of the meth-ane-propane-PL-pentane system at 100°F.l,2 However, Guter and co-workers have studied the phase behavior of the methane-ethane-ethylene system at relatively low temperatures. Information concerning the phase behavior of ternary systems is of value in predicting the behavior of the components in multicomponent systems, since the influence of pressure, temperature, and concentration may be individually ascertained. In the light of the importance of such information, the study of this ternary system was extended to higher temperatures in order to increase the field of temperature in which the data could be applied. Since all states encountered in this investigation are above the critical temperature of methane, the details of its phase behavior are not of direct significance. The properties of propane in the heterogeneous region were taken from a correlation3 based upon recently published data. The corresponding information for n-pentane was taken from experimentally measured vapor pressures and volumetric data.4 The rnethane-propane system has been studied throughout the two-phase region at temperatures above 70°F.,5 while the phase behavior of the propane-n-pentane system has been established for temperatures above 160°F.6 The volumetric and phase behavior of the methane-72-pentane system has been studied in detai1.7,8 The experimental measurements serve to establish with adequate accuracy the phase behavior of the components and of the constituent binary systems for this ternary system. It is believed that, with the exception of the measurements for the methane-propane system, the uncertainties in the earlier data relating to the pure substances and the binary mixtures are probably less than those associated with the values reported here. Method The methods and apparatus employed in this investigation have been described.137 In principle, the method involved the withdrawal of samples of the coexisting gas and liquid phases from a vessel containing a heterogeneous mixture of methane, propane and n-pentane.
