(written discussion?).-My experience has been that, where possible, it is preferable for each foreman to employ his own men, rather than to have them handled through an employment bureau. The fact that each foreman comes into direct contact with the man before he is put to work gives him an opportunity to choose, at certain times, the kind and class of men that he wishes. Where possible, after a man is employed he is sent to a central office where a complete history of each individual is kept on a card. If a man has previously been in the employ of the Company, his history can be obtained from this card, and if for any reason he is not wanted he can be refused work at the time he reports to, the central office. In connection with Workman's Compensation costs, we in Wyoming feel that although the rates of compensation paid may in some cases be rather low our law works satisfactorily. As the State and the number of employees are small, compensation cases are handled through Judges of the various District Courts. In the State Treasurer's Department, a few clerks were added to look after the handling and issuing of warrants and compiling of statistics. Most of the large employers have an arrangement by which a joint claim and assent, specifying the amount of compensation due, is made tip by the employer and signed by the workman. This is forwarded, to the Judges so that personal investigation of individual cases is not necessary. In this manner, compensation is promptly received and' overhead expenses of operation of the law is kept at the minimum. The law requires each employer to pay into the State Treasury, for the benefit of the industrial fund, a sum equal to 1.5 per cent. of the money earned by each employee, engaged during each calendar month of such employment. Each employer contributes monthly, unless the sum heretofore contributed, after deducting all payments made on account of injuries to his employees, shall equal a full 1.5 per cent. of his annual pay roll, computed by multiplying his current monthly pay roll by twelve, and shall likewise be not less than ($5000). It has been found during the years that this law has been in effect, that a number of the larger employers have been exempt from payment for from five to eight months per year, so that in some cases, even in coal nines, industrial insurance has cost less than 0.75 per cent.

GEORGE F. COMSTOCK (author's reply to discussion*).-Mr. Thum's description of the effects of butt welding and spot welding on the micro-structure of steel are interesting and timely. The speed with which the changes noted by Mr. Thum must take place is indeed remarkable, but the writer has noted a similar very rapid diffusion of carbide in annealing a t a rather high temperature certain samples of soft sheet steel containing massive cementite segregated on a small scale. The massive cementite in such steel can be dissolved and distributed very quickly if the proper temperature is attained. Mr. Thum's explanation of the structure he found in the spot welds seems entirely reasonable, but the mystery of the decarburized material in the butt weld is one that might well be the subject of further research. The possibility of decarburization by air ,might perhaps be worthy of a little more consideration than he gives it, for the oxides formed would be gaseous on account of the presence of carbon, and hence not visible in the microscope, and the effect of the pressure might be to squeeze the carbon oxides, which would normally form blow-holes, out of the metal or possibly into such small volumes as not to be noticed The removal of carbon by liquation and squeezing into the fin would be an effect similar to the "bleeding" of a steel ingot that is rolled while the center is still liquid, giving a soft low-carbon interior in the finished section while the segregate was removed in cropping the pipe. This effect in Mr. Thum's butt welds could, however, only be obtained if the weld was heated to near the melting point of the steel, and if the carbon was considerably segregated in the bars at the start, for the first effect of the high temperature would be to promote diffusion rather than the contrary segregation and Equation. It is gratifying to learn from Dr. Ruder's remarks that his researches have resulted in no disagreement with the few points brought out by the writer's experiments. In addition to the three forms in which nitrogen may occur in iron that he mentions, it would seem that a fourth form is often found; This is apparently a eutectoid, like pearlite, and sometimes almost as coarse as the massive cementite seen in soft steel sheets that have been annealed for a long time. One of the things needed in the metallographic study of steel is an etching reagent that will distinguish definitely between nitride in this form and the more common pearlite or cementite.

The pressure and molecular weight of the antimony vapor over solid solutions of tin in antimony, containing 97.4, 94.9, 93.0, and 90.7 at. pct Sb, have been measured from 445° to 545°C by the torsion-effision method. The vapor is all Sb, within experimental error. A solidus curve which differs somewhat from the accepted curve has been calculated using the measured antimony activities. Metallographic examination of additional annealed alloys substantiates the accepted solidus. The solid solutions, which show negative deviations from ideality, probably do not deviate greatly from regular solution behavior. HANSEN' considers the Sb-Sn phase diagram to be well established with the exception of the boundary of the (Sb) phase.* Although there have been no pre- Their data can be combined with data for the solid alloys to calculate the solidus curve of the (Sb) phase. This paper presents measurements of the pressure ant1 molecular weight of antimony over Sb-Sn solid solutions containing 97.4, 94.9, 93.0, and 90.7 at. pct sb. Measurements were made by simultaneous use of the volmer3 torsion and Knudsen, effusion methods. The results of these measurements have been combined with the vapor pressure of pure antimony5 to obtain the activity of antimony in the primary solid solutions. The solidus curve calculated from these data differs somewhat from the accepted curve and is rather uncertain. Metallographic examination of Sb-Sn alloys was carried out to clarify the position of the solidus of the (Sb) phase. EXPERIMENTAL The apparatus and technique have been described previously.5 The measurements were made with the same effusion cells and torsion wire used in the measurements on pure antimony. The torsion measurements were calibrated with mercury at 30" using a mercury vapor pressure of 2.96 x 10-3 mm Hg determined by concurrent, absolute, weight-loss experiments. As in the measurements on pure antimony, an extraneous vapor was observed to distill off during the first run after the cell had been loaded with A fresh sample of alloy and during the first minute or two of every run. The change in composition after a series of runs with one sample was of the order of 0.1 at. pct and thus completely negligible in the calculation of the thermodynamic properties. COAL-mine opera- tors face a difficul- ty in notifying men when there is no work. If the miners come to the shaft when there is no work, they must be paid, by agreement, two hours' wages. This involves a considerable loss since it is not uncommon to em- ploy two or three hun- dred men or more at a single shaft. Many mines have solved the problem by using an electric siren. This carries the "no work" message to all of the miners within a ra- dius of from one and one- half to two miles, so they do not trudge uselessly to work and the operator saves the two-hours wage payment. At the Valley Smokeless Coal Co., Johns- town, Pa., such a siren serves as a start and quit- work signal for three mines which previously re¬ quired three individual signal systems. Similar units are used by the Old Ben Coal Corp. mines, Dolly's Smokeless Coal Co., Rhonda Coal Co., Bird Coal Co., and hundreds of others. Many other applications of the electric siren have been found in mines. They are used on underground locomotives, to awaken miners in the morning, to tell them it is time to come to work, to sound the start and quit-work signal, and to warn of fire or accident. The sirens are most generally used to give a start and quit-work signal, fire, and general emergency alarms as well as no-work signals. They require 3 and 5 hp. to operate. The smaller unit has a sound radius of from three-quarters to one mile, while the larger siren can be heard over a distance of from one and one-half to two miles. The 5-hp. unit has been heard for as great a distance as 14 miles, and 10 miles is not at all uncommon. One of the outstanding features of the 3 and 5-hp. units, which is uncommon in the smaller sirens is that they may be adapted to sound code signals. When used to sound a fire or general emergency alarm the siren may tell at the same time where the fire or acci-dent is. When a remote control device is used with a siren it is possible to operate the siren from any number of distant points. Any number of "start" buttons may be placed at various places. By using one "start and stop" button where the remote control is mounted, and one or more "start" buttons at various places about the plant, it is necessary to run only two wires to the various "start" buttons. If "start" and "stop" buttons are used altogether, then three wires must be run.

The primary purpose of the Institute is to advance the technologic and engineering arts embraced by it through interchange of knowledge. This can best be clone by the presentation and discussion of technical papers by its members. Short practical papers are especially welcome. An author should always satisfy himself that his material is of a quality that will he a credit to him and to the Institute. The preparation of a good paper frequently leads to a reorientation of the author's thoughts, and publication contributes much to the professional standing of the author. Members are urged to submit papers presenting the results of their work. Attention to the following suggestions will greatly further the prompt and efficient handling of manuscripts. 1. SUBJECTS: The subject must be within the field of the Institute. Original work, the results of field, plant, laboratory or theoretical investigations, new views on old but important problems and occasionally reviews of timely and important subjects of wide interest to our members may constitute the basis of a paper. The mere fact that the work is original does not necessarily justify publication: it must be of a substantial nature, of value to a reasonable number of our members and worthy of permanent record. It is seldom desirable to subdivide the results of a single research for publication in a variety of journals. Previous publication is usually a bar to acceptance. If any part of your paper has been published elsewhere and you regard repetition as absolutely necessary please so state in your covering letter. 2. CONSTRUCTION: Papers should be clearly and concisely written in good English. Care in this regard ensures wider reading and the saving in space permits the Institute to publish more papers. It is the experience of the Papers and Publications Committee that most papers can he improved by condensation. "Readers" who are asked to recommend acceptance or nonacceptance put particular emphasis on the length of the paper and the elimination of unnecessary or any extraneous material. The terminology and units employed should be those current in the particular field. An examination of Institute publications will afford useful guidance in such matters. Webster's New International Dictionary, 1935 edition, is the Institute's authority for spelling and style. Various abbreviations are used habitually; for instance, lb., pound; bbl., barrel or barrels; ft., foot or feet; hr., hour or hours; in., inch or inches; Fig. 1 but Figs. 2 and 3.

Discussion of the paper of E. T. DUMBLE, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. .1623 to 1638. E. L. DEGOLYER, Norman, Okla. (communIcatIon to the Secretary*).-Referring to Mr. Dumble's description of the stratigraphy of eastern Mexico, I should like to question the classification of the ?Papagallos? or ?Mendez? shales as being of Cretaceous age and the so-called overlapping of the Papagallos or Mendez shales by the Alazan shales; the classification of the San Felipe series as Cretaceous, and the correlation of the San Felipe series with the San Juan limestones. Mr. Durable apparently recognizes the continuity of the great shale formation by his use of the terms "Papagallos" and "Mendez," as equivalent and interchangeable, since the Papagallos Hills in the State of Nuevo Leon and Mendez Station in Northern Vera Cruz, localities at which the shale formation outcrops, and from which the formation names are taken, are approximately 250 miles apart and on opposite sides of the Tamaulipas barrier. The Papagallos shales (evidently referring here to the northern extension only) are said to be non-fossiliferous and no reason for .their Cretaceous classification is given, though in a previous article' they are classified as Cretaceous because at their northernmost outcrop they "have the same relation toward the overlying Tertiary that the Escondido (Cretaceous) has through its whole extent." The Alazan fossil locality was found by me and the first collections from it were sent to Dr. Dall; about 17 species of marine invertebrates were recognized by him, the fauna noted as having a distinct Pacific tincture, and the age of the formation from which they cause pronounced lower Eocene. The outcrop of the shale formation has been traced continuously from this point by me and my assistants into the Panuco River region, where Eocene fossils are reported at a depth of 1,810 ft. in a well at Topila.2 From Topila the formation has been traced continuously north to the Padilla-Jiminez region in Central Tamaulipas. Lithologically, the formation is fairly constant and though I am only generally acquainted with it north of the Padilla-Jiminez region, until definite evidence of the Cretaceous age of the Papagallos shale in its type localities, or of an overlap, is available, it seems to me more logical to consider the shale formation a single stratigraphic unit of Eocene age.

In 1939 the production of crude oil in New York totaled 5,105,000 bbl. This marks the third consecutive year production of crude oil has exceeded 5,000,000 bbl. and only once has this total been surpassed—in the year 1882, three years after the discovery of oil in Allegany County, when the annual production was more than 6,000,000 barrels. The most gratifying feature of the industry was the increased demand for lubricants, which resulted in advanced prices for crude. From a price at the beginning of the year of $1.68 per barrel, six advances totaling 82c brought the year's closing to $2.50 per barrel. A further increase in price on Jan. 1, 1940, to $2.75 per barrel places the local industry in a strong position for the year's operations. Most of the oil production of the state is now obtained by water-flooding, and the industry is practically stabilized. No new pools have been discovered in over 25 years, and border drilling indicates little prospect of extending the boundaries of the fields beyond their present limits. Deep drilling to the Oriskany sandstone in and close to the present oil fields hay failed to find oil in substantial amounts. Altogether, the oil pools of New York have produced during the 60 years that they have been exploited approximately 125,000,000 bbl. of oil. Following the flush production of 1882, the annual production gradually dccrcased and the year 1912 marked an all-time low of only 782,000 bbl. In 1919, as a result of flooding operations, a definite upward trend in oil production was recorded. During that year also the production of oil by water-flooding methods as approved by Legislative action. In the 21-yr. period beginning with 1919, oil production in the state ha.: totaled 60,338,000 bbl. Thus it will be seen that by the aid of flooding methods nearly as much oil has been produced in the last 21 yr. as in the preceding 40 yr., although the Iatter period included the flush production in 1882. As there is little hope of extending the area of the present producing oil fields of the state, producers and refiners are concerned regarding the future life of the fields. WORLD WAR II has developed a use for the nonmetal mineral quartz crystal that was unknown in World War I. During the interim period of peace, experimental work in the radio field with the piezoelectric properties of quartz crystal resulted in the almost universal adoption of quartz-crystal radio oscillator plates to control frequency in radio broadcasting, police, commercial and amateur communications equipment. Telephone resonators and filters made from quartz crystal also were developed, which vastly improved the frequency control of long distance telephone circuits. EXPANSION OF THE INDUSTRY The sudden war demands of the armed services for radio equipment using quartz crystal for frequency control led to an unprecedented expansion of the manufacturing industry. It is estimated that the 1940 peacetime volume amounted to approximately $1,500,000, while today a vast new quartz-crystal industry supplies more than $150,000,000 worth of quartz oscillator plates to the Army and Navy each year. This demand has caused an enormous expansion not only of American manufacturing facilities but also of Brazilian mining output, virtually our only source of raw quartz crystal. Actual figures of imports and consumption cannot be cited, for security reasons, but certain comparisons have been made, which indicate the transformation of quartz crystal from a minor to a major nonmetal. Lends has shown that the value of quartz-crystal exports from Brazil is now about equal to that of phosphate rock produced domestically in 1941 and actually exceeds the combined value of crude feldspar, gypsum and fluorspar production in the United States in the same year. This great expansion under wartime pressure was not accomplished without some anxious moments, but all the demands of industry have been met and the Government has been able also to accumulate a substantial stock pile of material against future contingencies. INSPECTION AND GRADING OF QUARTZ CRYSTAL The swift growth of the quartz-oscillator industry necessitated the simultaneous evolution of methods and criteria for inspecting and grading quartz crystal. It has been found that, generally speaking, it is economically feasible to cut only crystals that are at least 30 per cent by volume free from major defects such as optical and electrical twinning, cracks and fractures. Blue needles, bubbles, "chuva" and other minor imperfections can be tolerated in the usable portion unless present in great excess. The present marketing system in use in both Brazil and the United States, as far as quality is concerned, depends solely on the "usability" of a crystal, which is defined in the Brazilian-American agreement2

Professor Kim's excellent review article1 on ultimate pit planning contains a statement of the apparently widely held but incorrect belief that "kriging provides information on the confidence limits around the estimate which no other extension technique is capable of supplying." If a geostatistical approach is valid, there are several good reasons for using kriging but uniquely provided confidence limits is not among them. If kriging is possible, then confidence limits can be calculated for any other linear estimate. Kriging is the procedure which finds the weighing coefficients which minimize the estimation variance [ ] is the variance of blocks like the one being estimated. wi is the covariance of the estimated block and the i-th sample. oij is the covariance of the i-th sample and the j-th sample. Ai is the weighing coefficient for the i-th sample. N is the number of samples. The formula for estimation variance can also be used to calculate confidence limits on blocks estimated by any linear combination of sample grades including: 1) Polygons a. Hole nearest block centroid is assigned weight 1. All other holes are assigned weight 0. b. Polygonal area weighing. The samples are assigned weights directly proportional to their polygonal areas of influence within the block. The weights sum to 1. 2) Inverse distance weighing. The samples are assigned weights directly proportional to the reciprocal of their distance to some power from the block centriod. The weights sum to 1. Often only holes nearer than a certain distance and/or the nearest hole in each octant is considered. If there is an antisotropy to the ore body, an elliptical transformation often gives more accurate results. The most popular inverse distance weighing function is inverse squared distances (IDS). 3) Simple average. All samples within a certain distance are assigned the same weights which sum to 1. As an example of the applicability of the above formula to any linear estimate an internal verification on copper grade of 665 blast holes on the 1040 bench at Utah's Island Copper mine is presented. Internal verification is simple and applicable to non-linear estimates as well. Any sample (drill hole, bulk, trench, or chip) is dropped out, the value of the dropped sample estimated and compared with the actual value. If this is done for all samples, a measure of confidence limits is obtained. Internal verification is used in Cominco's MEPS system4 and in the BLUEPACK system.5 Comparison of block values against estimates697 is not dissimilar to internal verification. Results of the internal verification are presented below:

Laboratory investigations have been made to study the effect of variations in fluid characteristics, gas saturation, water saturation, and water injection rate on oil recovery by water flooding. Three synthetic gas-saturated crude oils having bubble points of 860, 1,540 and 1,885 psi were used as reservoir fluids. Repeated tests were made in which a and pack, saturated with water and synthetic oil, was produced by solution gas drive followed by water flooding at various pressure levels. Oil recovery by solution gas drive and subsequent water injection is shown to vary with the pressure and rate at which the water flood is conducted. The pressure at which optimum flooding conditions exist is shown to be a functiotl of the physical characteristics of the reservoir fluid. For the systems studied, increases in oil recoveries of near 10 per cent were obtained by flooding at the most desirable conditions. Va- riations in initial water saturations gave results similar to those in the literature. INTRODUCTION Most of the waterflooding studies investigating means of improving present exploitation processes have been conducted at low pressures with little effort to simulate reservoir conditions. Holmgren and Morse' performed a waterflooding study at 300 to 500 psi wherein the gas saturation was created by injecting gas, letting dissolved gas evolve from the oil, and then flushing the core with "live" oil until the desired gas saturation was obtained. Their results show increasing oil recoveries with increasing gas saturations. Data presented by Guerrero' and Kennedy, et al, indicate that in some instances water flooding at approximately 500 psi below the original bubble point results in a lower residual oil saturation than is obtained when water flooding above the bubble point. In their work gas saturations were created by primary depletion. By correcting low pressure flooding data for fluid shrinkage, Dyes found that a maximum oil recovery may be obtained by flooding with initial gas saturations of from 7 to 12 per cent. The purpose of this work was to determine the variations in oil recovery caused by initiating a waterflooding program at various stages of primary depletion of a core. This is a part of a more comprehensive study of obtaining criteria for determining when to initiate a pressure maintenance program and what fluids to in-ject. The first successful use of the wire saw in slate quarrying in the United States was late in 1926, at the quarry of the Colonial Slate Co. near Wind Gap, Pa. This installation was sponsored and supervised by the United States Bureau of Mines in collaboration with the National Slate Association.' The success of this trial resulted in other installations of wire saws, so that 27 were in operation at Pennsylvania slate quarries2 by October, 1928. Marble Quarrying with a Wire Saw Until recently, little or no attempt has been made to use the wire saw in the quarrying of other stone, but it is believed that its successful use in slate will be followed by attempts to take advantage of its possibilities in other quarrying operations. An example of such a trial is the recent installation of a wire saw at the marble quarry of the Saint Clair Marble Co. near Guion, in the Ozark region of northern Arkansas. This quarry is in a comparatively new district and the decision to open and develop it had to be made in the face of many unknown factors. For this reason, it was essential that the development costs be held at a minimum, and as a wire saw could be installed more cheaply than standard channeling equipment, it was decided to try it out. One factor Largely controlling the decision was that the location was peculiarly adapted to this method. The point of development selected was on the rather abrupt end of a ridge formed on the south by an almost perpendicular bluff along the White River and on the north by a rather steep slope with little or no overburden. By taking advantage of this topography it was possible to place the supporting standards for the sheaves at both the outer and driving end without the necessity of drilling or excavating openings to receive them, and to locate the motive power in line with these standards, which made it unnecessary to deflect the sheaves.

The V-Rh-Si, Nb-Rh-Si, and Cr-Rh-Si systems were investigated to evaluate the extent of solid solubility between binary Cr3O structures. All Cr3O components lie within the favorable atomic size range1 for the formation of the Cr3O structure. Previous studies indicated complete solid solubility between V3Si and V3Sn2 and no solubility between Sn and cr3si3 or Si and Nb3Rh.4 The Cr3O structure is not found in the Cr-Sn and Nb-Si binary systems. Powder compacts were are-melted under argon, homogenized in a vacuum at 1000°C, and water-quenched. Alloys containing greater than 15 at. pet Si were annealed 100 hr. X-ray diffractometer methods were used to study all systems utilizing copper radiation for the Cr-Rh-Si system and chromium radiation for the other two systems. V-Rh-Si System. The alloys prepared in the V-Rh-Si system and the measured lattice parameters for the Cr3O structure found in each alloy are listed in Table I. The characteristic Cr3O diffraction pattern was found in all binary alloys. The measured lattice parameter of V3Rh (VRS-1) is in agreement with the reported value5 while the value for V3Si (VRS-5) is only in fair agreement.' In

John Philip Zannaras (Registered Professional Engineer, Congress, Ariz.)- The authors show in their [Fig. 4] the cumulative results of grinding with two sizes of bails, one 30 mm and the other 20 mm. The Gaudin-Meloy probability for breakage for a single fall used by the authors in their paper is given by their [Eq. 6]. Another form of [Eq. 6] is given by Gaudin-Meloy in their paper as follows: [ ] From the definition of A given by Gaudin-Meloy it is obvious that A30 is greater than A., it therefore follows from the foregoing equation that according to the Gaudin-Meloy formula the probability of breakage for a single fall of all the balls in the 20-mm experiment was more than 2.25 times the probability of breakage in a single fall of all the 30-mm balls which is contradicted by the authors' experimental evidence in [Fig. 4] in which is shown that much more grinding took place with the 30-mm balls. In fact the authors present convincing evidence that the Gaudin-Meloy work is erroneous because their work is based only on a geometric configuration and on ambiguous and uncertain definition of A and disregards the fact that the distribution of fracture depends on other important and indispensable factors including the intensity of stress caused on the feed grain by the balls. That there is an immense and chaotic variation of stresses caused on the feed grains by the balls is shown by a formula, derived by this writer and published in 1955. The derivation of this formula is given in the Appendix of this discussion; it contains the variables in the operation of ball mills and is based on the science of mechanics-not on probabilities. [ ] where T is the unit stress in pounds per square inch produced by the moving load, h is the height in feet through which P has fallen, E is the modulus of elasticity of the rock, P is weight of one ball, and L is the size of the grain (assumed to be a cube of side L). It will be shown by this writer's formula that when a 30-mm ball strikes any size of feed grain it will cause 1.837 times higher stress than the 20-mm ball when striking the same size grain. It will be shown that when the 30-mm ball or the 20-mm ball strikes a feed grain of 0.1 mm it will cause 90 times more stress on the grain than when it strikes a 2-mm grain.

Caliper logging is a practice of measuring the variations in the diameter of the open hole in a well. This information is useful for many purposes, among which are: Determining the volumetric capacity of the portion of open hole to be cemented; the amount of gravel to be used for gravel-packing a well; the size and location of seat for a packer to be placed in a well; studying the effects of nitroglycerin shots; studying the effects of acidizing; studying the cause of drill-pipe failures; studying drilling technique; geological correlations. This is a new practice in oil fields and is eliminating considerable guesswork. Introduction Caliper logging of the open hole in oil wells, recently introduced and now showing initial results in many sections of the country, is providing information that is filling a long-felt need in oil-well cementing and in numerous other oil-field practices. Briefly, it measures the variations in diameter, of the open hole in a well. This direct physical measurement of the strati-graphic profile has considerable value for subsurface interpretations by the geologist, engineer, driller and others charged with the responsibility of properly completing and repairing oil and gas wells. The caliper shown in Fig. I is run into a well in closed position. The four arms are released when logging is to start. These arms are independent of each other. As the calipers are pulled upward through the open hole, the arms are like nimble fingers feeling the changing profile of the hole. This mechanical action is in turn converted into an electrical circuit, which is connected to a recording mechanism at the surface. a. Lowered into well in closed position. b. Arms released. Readings are made while caliper travels upward. Direct recording is made at surface, in inches. The recording of the diameter of the hole is directly in inches.

The major development in stabilization of the oil industry during 1933 was the transition in the United States from state control to federal control in many of the functions that government is presumed to exercise. A brief review of the influences leading to that transition is given here to suggest its significance and to assist in forecasting its further development. Bitumens were known to the ancients and have been applied to minor uses since earliest historic times, but it was not until after the discovery of oil in considerable quantities near Titusville, Pennsylvania, in 1859 that it was made the basis of extensive commercial undertakings. In 1859 little was known about the origin of oil and gas, the nature of these deposits, and the physical laws that controlled their accumulation. Scientists soon began to study them, but 50 years or more of active oil-field development had elapsed before sufficient geological information had been accumulated to point the way toward efficient recovery of these products. In fact, only within the past five years has the function of reservoir energy become widely understood, yet it is a primary factor in oil recovery. discovery near Titusville, this infant industry has developed into an industrial giant. In complete ignorance of their destructive effect, wasteful development methods were initiated in Oil Creek and these became industrial habits. These habits in turn became oil and gas law. Under that law vast sums of money have been expended, rights have become vested and development methods fastened on a great industry that not only bring upon it periodic demoralization but cause ruthless destruction of the nation's reserves of these important natural resources. This is occurring in the midst of a petroleum era when oil is essential to the nation's security, its industrial supremacy, and the personal convenience of every citizen. Its conservation, therefore, has become a question of grave national concern. The plummet lamp, to which I called the attention of the Institute, at the Bethlehem meeting, in August, 1871, with the improvement of the compensating ring, suggested by Mr. Heller, having come into general use for mine surveying in this country, and my attention having been called to the fact that it could not be employed in mines in which there was danger of meeting with fire-damp, I have so modified it that it can be used in all cases with safety. Mining engineers, who are in active practice in those districts where fire-damp is met with in the mines (and I am sorry to say it is becoming much more common in the anthracite regions), know how dangerous their work is when they are called upon to survey such mines, particularly when they are obliged to run lines in those parts of a mine which have been unworked, since by opening of doors, brattice, etc., to get the sights, they are liable to disarrange the currents of air, and cause any fire-damp that may have accumulated in the old workings to find its way into the levels, etc., where the party is at work. It is, therefore, very dangerous to leave an open light (such as the original form of plummet lamp) in an old breast or gangway, even when the safety lamp has shown that no fire-damp is present, for the opening of the doors, etc., may drive the fire-damp to the light, and thus endanger the lives of the engineers. The improved form of plummet lamp, now shown to you, can be used either with or without the safety apparatus. Upon the top of the plumb-bob portion of the old lamp a screw is cut, upon which a ring A is screwed. (See Plate 11.) On the external cylindrical part of this ring two small conical holes are drilled, 180' apart. The compensating ring, by which the plumb-bob part of the lamp is suspended, passes over the ring A, and is fastened to it by two small screws having conical points, which fit into the conical holes in the ring A. The safety apparatus resembles, to a certain extent, that of the Mueseler lamp. It consists of a ring B and plate C, which are united by four rods. The plate C has a cylindrical hole in the middle, and four apertures distributed radially around it. In a paper by Mr. Frank Firmstone, published in vol. iv, of the Transactions of the Institute, on " Comparison of Results from Open-topped and Closed-topped Furnaces," the regularity of the average grade of pig iron procluced by the furnace under different conditions is expressed by means of a curve or diagram. The object of this note is to show that the graphic method, or that of representing variations by plotted curves or diagrams, is capable of a much more extended application to blast-furnace records, making a valuable auxiliary to the " furnace hook," and that by it the practical metallurgist may obtain at a glance information concerning the variations of the furnace during long periods, which could be found in the furnace book only after a tedious search. Plate XII is a graphic record of an anthracite blast furnace for one month. The table on page 554 gives the figures obtained from the furnace book, together with a record of temperature of the atmosphere, barometric pressure, and moisture in the air, which was obtained from a meteorological observatory not far from the furnace. In the records of a furnace, two of the variable qualities are final results, viz., the quantity of pig iron produced, and its grade; all the other variables are antecedent causes which produce the final results. Of these variable callses which contribute to the quantity of product and its grade, some are partially under the control of the furnace manager, others depend upon the state of the atmosphere, and still others are accidental. Of the first class are the character of the materials charged, and their relative proportions, their mechanical conditions, as wetor dry, large or small pieces, etc., the revolutions of the engine, the heat and pressure of blast, and the distribution of the charge. Of the second class are the number of pounds of air blown into the furnace for each stroke of the engine, the amount of moisture in the air, and the condition of the chimney draughts. These vary largely with the season of the year. Of the third class is the leaking of a tuyere or a temporary stoppage. To keep a record of this kind for a whole year, it is only necessary to procure a sheet of common profile or cross section paper, about 38 inches long and 8 or 10 inches wide, with cross lines ruled about 0.1 of an inch apart. Creep investigators have made extensive studies to determine the interrelation of stress, temperature and the tensile creep rates of metals. It has been suggested that at small stresses the secondary or constant creep rates obey a simple viscous law. Building upon this suggestion, departure from pure viscosity as stress increases may be expressed mathematically as a consequence of reversibly altered viscosity or "flowability" in the same sense that temperature change reversibly alters viscosity. From the index to alteration of viscosity, a value for the energy of secondary creep may be derived having the magnitude of the free energy of vaporized metal. The suggestion is made that application of stress alters the energy of secondary creep. Strain energy is argued to be but a minor factor in the energetics of secondary creep. A deformation mechanism involving the large energy associated with secondary creep implies a sort of solid self-diffusion process. Evidence indicates that creep strain above the recrystallization temperature takes place by crystallographically directed self-diffusion at grain boundaries and points of crystal defects. A self-diffusion theory of secondary creep is proposed, embracing the principles of the Dushman-Langmuir theory of solid diffusion. An equation is suggested whereby the rate of tensile creep may be related directly to the physical and structural character of the solid metal. Basis of Investigation Much of the investigation that has been given to the creep characteristics of metals and alloys has been directed toward studying the dependence of creep rate upon stress. Great interest has centered upon the approximately uniform rate of flow that has been demonstrated for numerous metals and alloys. At temperatures above the strain-hardening ranges of materials, this uniform rate frequently is attained after a relatively short period of initial rapid flow, and the period during which it persists determines for most practical purposes the useful life of the

SOME eight years ago I became interested to a considerable extent in one of the well-known deposits of sulphury iron ore in New Jersey, and, as a consequence, soon became interested in the subject of the elimination of the sulphur. On investigation I found that no department of pig-iron manufacture had received less attention than that of roasting or calcining ores for the elimination of sulphur, carbonic acid, water, etc. My first devices to eliminate sulphur were naturally in the lime-kiln line, with solid fuel mixed with the ore, in the same way as common lime is burnt with small coal. While this process will succeed tolerably well for carbonates or calcareous ores, even though they contain sulphur as sulphates, I soon found it would not answer for our magnetites, which are very hard and dense, carrying from 2 to 5 per cent. of sulphur as pyrites, and become very sticky as soon as any attempt is made to roast them at a high heat. Some laboratory experiments developed the fact that the nearer the gaseous current surrounding the hot ore approached in composition pure atmospheric air the more rapidly the sulphur was oxidized, while in an atmosphere composed largely of carbonic oxide, carbonic acid, and nitrogen, it seemed almost impossible to reduce the sulphur more than one-half, which was a confirmation of the well-known fact that just one-half of the sulphur in pyrites volatilizes very easily, and that the trouble is mainly to remove the remainder. It was thus apparent that the atmosphere surrounding the ore was of as much importance as the temperature. This led to the trial of a kiln to heat the ore by conduction through the brick. It was divided into ore-chambers, which were surrounded with flues, through which the products of combustion of gaseous fuel passed without coming in contact with the ore. We did not, however, succeed by this arrangement in getting more than a cherry-red heat, which, of course, was too low to accomplish anything. I had at this point become convinced – 1st. That gaseous fuel only would accomplish the work successfully. 2d. That since a high temperature was required to insure a rapid oxidation of the sulphur, and also to make the ore open and porous,

I DESIRE to submit, for the consideration and information of the members of the Institute, the following data, drawings, and tables, showing what I believe will be interesting information with regard to the diamond drill, and its uses in developing mineral lands. I would first say that the results given have been obtained during the past two years by means of two drilling machines belonging to the Lehigh Valley Coal Company, operating on their coal lands in the Mahanoy, Lehigh, and Wyoming regions. 1st. A tabulated statement, giving location of borings, date, progress, total cost, itemized cost per foot, etc. 2d. Section showing strata bored in Nos. 5 and 10 holes at Mt. Carmel, see Plate VI. 3d. Section showing strata bored in No. 19 hole at Hazleton, see Plate VI. 4th. Photograph and description of drill No. 2. From the first it will be seen that the total number of test-holes bored up to May 1st of this year is 24; 9 of these are in the Mahanoy region, 6 in the Lehigh region, and 10 in the Wyoming region, in all of which cores have been taken for the whole distance. The total distance bored is 9902 feet. The majority of the holes have been put down for the purpose of proving the lower veins of the coal series, and have had to encounter the harder rocks of the coal formation. Much of the distance has been through the lower conglomerates, going in some cases through the coarse egg conglomerate, the foundation of the coal deposit, and to the green sandstone and red shale which underlie it. These lower sandrocks and conglomer¬ates are among the hardest known to geologists, and present a formidable resistance to the exploring drill. This fact must be taken into consideration in comparisons of cost of drilling, and when considered will still further improve the very favorable results I am able to show in my statement of costs. In illustration, I will cite the work of one bit when boring in the upper or softer rocks of the Wyoming region, where 280 feet were obtained without resetting, while in the Lehigh and Mahanoy regions, in the lower and harder rocks, bits set with the same quality of diamonds would only bore from 3 to 20 feet before being worn out.
