The fundamental mechanism of the deformation of zinc has been thoroughly described by several prominent investigators, particularly Mark, Polanyi, and Schmid,1 Mathewson and Phillips,2 and Schmid and Wassermann.3 The deformation of zinc occurs primarily through slip along basal planes (00.11, and secondarily through twinning on pyramidal planes of the form (10.2). In addition to these basic studies on single crystals, there have been a number of determinations4,5 of preferred orientations developed in rolled, polycrystalline zinc. In no case, to our knowledge, has there been described the development of oriented structures in zinc as a result of a systematic series of rolling treatments. The work included in the present paper shows the changes in orientation produced in a zinc alloy by successively increasing degrees of cold-rolling reduction. This alloy has the same crystal form, hexagonal close-packed, as zinc, but its susceptibility to hardening for a given degree of working is much greater because of its higher recrystal-lization temperature. Experimental Procedure Composition of the Alloy and Rolling Treatment The alloy used in this investigation consisted of zinc of 99.9 per cent purity to which 1 per cent of copper and 0.01 per cent of magnesium had been added.

Mr. Eschholz discusses the particular case of large precipitators installed in connection with large metallurgical operations, and receiving their high-potential energy through the conversion of alternating current to direct current by means of the mechanical rectifier. He classifies these mechanical rectifier installations, according to source of power, as follows: System A.-Applications utilizing individual alternating-current generators, either single-phase or polyphase, installed exclusively for furnishing energy to one or more transformer-rectifier-precipitator units. System. B.-Applications having no special alternating-current generators, but utilizing the existing alternating-current industrial or lighting mains to supply the energy to one or more transformer-rectifier-precipitator units. System C.-Applications receiving their energy from high-tension power circuits supplied directly to potential regulator-rectifier-precipitator units. I do not intend here to enter upon a detailed technical discussion of the foregoing classes, which would really interest only the manufacturers of electrical apparatus and the electrical engineers. THE HIGH-TEMPERATURE SCALE IN OPTICAL PYROMETRY AT the basis of optical pyrometry lie the theoretical and experimental data of the so-called blackbody. The black body is essentially a theoretical conception, with certain simple properties attributed to it -fundamentally, the property that its radiation at any temperature is a unique function of the temperature and does not involve any other variables. As a theoretical conception, an equation has been developed by Boltzmann connecting the total radiant power with the temperature, and another equation by Planck connecting the distribution of radiant power throughout the spectrum with the temperature. The integral of the latter with respect to wave-length conduces to the former and permits the evaluation of the constant c1 of the Planck equation, ass given in the form. J-= cl?-5 c2 (1) e ? T ? 1 assuming that the constant Q of the Stefan-Boltzmann law E=a(T4-T40) is known. The other constant c2 is arrived at by other methods, which will be discussed later. This equation for the black body lies at the foundation of optical pyrometry. To make the discussion complete, it should be stated that the theoretical black body is quite closely realized by a hollow enclosure with walls at a uniform temperature and radiating through a small orifice. The electrically heated black body, first introduced by Lummer and Kurlbaum, is an essential part of the equipment of a pyrometric research or testing laboratory. Numerous investigations have shown that its radiation conforms to that of the theoretical black body within experimental errors. Hence by operating the electrically heated black body at the melting point of some pure metal for which the temperature of melting has been determined on the vas scale. a standard is obtained for comparison with

Before the present company was formed, in 1916, each group of mines comprising the old organizations made its detailed daily and monthly mine cost records along the lines used before the consolidation; that is, there was no attempt made to standardize and compare the stope costs of all mines. The general cost sheets for all mines, however, were standardized, and cumulative labor cost sheets were compiled in the general superintendent's office. At most of the mines, a daily record or distribution sheet for each working place was kept, showing the number of men, hours of drilling, hours of timbering, hours of tramming, cars of ore, cars of waste, sticks of powder and feet of fuse. This information was kept by each shift boss and entered on the distribution sheet by him or, at some mines, by a tram boss. The superintendent solved his own problems under the direction of the general superintendent, but without coming in touch with other superintendents, either through records or general conferences. Probably 95 per cent. of the stopes were square-set worked by day's pay; there were some back-filling and shrinkage stopes. Many of the development places, such as shaft sinking, station cutting, drifting and raises had always been run by contract. These contracts were given, for no definite period, at so much per linear foot and were measured monthly, or when completed, the men being paid monthly. In some cases, fairness to the employee was not maintained. On the whole, there was no standardization. There were no stope contracts, because of the objections of the Western Federation of Miners to general contracting in the mines. Changes in Stoping Methods Early in 1916, W. B. DURING the past few years, the Mineral Point Zinc Co. has had under consideration the improvement of various types of gas-filtering apparatus used in the removal of dust from crushing and milling plants, in the manufacture of oxide, and on blast-furnace fume and sintering furnaces. The original equipment of the various plants of the company was, of course, along lines of the standard stationary bag house. These houses required large surfaces, hand shaking, and varied only in the manner of the collection of solids and in the distribution of the gas. Early in 1908, the first trial of a mechanical bag house was made at Nassau Plant at Depue, Ill. The duty of this installation was on dust-laden gas from a fine-crushing mill. The Printz and Rau bag machine was finally adopted and put into operation. This ingenious machine embodied what were then to us two novel features in bag-house practice: 1. An intermittent crinkling and snapping of the filtering fabric to free the meshes of solids. i 2. A reversal of gas flow for a short period by a temporary connection w th the suction trunk. This equipment worked fairly well except in cold weather, when we ran into condensation troubles. Had we at that time understood more fully some of the limitations of fabric filtering work, these might well have been remedied. We were impressed by this experience, however, with the efficiency of sudden tension on the fabric under suction. After a study had been made of some of the Western blast-furnace houses using the reversal-of-flow feature, experiments were started early in 1914 with a view to developing an automatic equipment along the best lines of our past experience. The objects sought were: 1. Keeping labor out of the houses for hygienic reasons. 2. Reduction of labor costs. 3. Reduction in -size of hag houses. 4. Accessibility. 5. Ability to handle relatively hot gases where required.

I have read with much interest the elaborate and able paper of Messrs. Granger and Treville on the Mining Districts of Colombia, presented at the Atlantic City Meeting (ante, p. 33). Going into detail, however, as the paper does—and particularly with reference to the department of Antioquia, I am somewhat surprised that the property of the Frontino and Bolivia Company, probably one of the richest and most extensive in Colombia, should come off with such scant notice. The entire property embraces an area of some 28 square miles, and is situated at a distance of about 2 leagues from Remedios—after Medellin probably the most important town of the Department—and lying in approximately '7° N. latitude. The neighborhood of Remedios has been long celebrated for its production of the precious metal. Alluvial gold in large quantities has been obtained from the vicinity for upwards of two centuries; and even to-day a large proportion of the population finds a comfortable livelihood, during the dry season, in washing the sands of various rivers, notably the Rio Porce; while the amount of gold, in the form of nuggets, brought almost daily to Remedios and other points, from streams in the immediate neighborhood, is astonishing. These nuggets vary much in size. The majority, of course, are small, but larger ones are by no means scarce. I have been considerably surprised at the amount and value of the trade thus transacted between natives and merchants of the various towns. THE mixing of fine ores with fuel and burning under induced draft is called sintering in iron-ore practice and either sintering or roasting in copper and lead metallurgy. The first development of sintering was the Huntington-Heberlein process, in which fine sulfide ores mixed with fuel were charged into a pot and burned under the action of an upcast current of air introduced at the bottom of the pot. Modern development has resulted in two types of machine; the continuous Dwight-Lloyd machine, which consists of heat-resisting grates and a moving beltlike type of hearth constructed of metal, in which air is drawn downward through the bed, and the stationary Greenawalt batch process, which operates in the same manner as the Dwight-Lloyd except that the hearth is stationary. The recent rapid increase in the use of sintering has been the result of two great advances in metallurgical process-flotation and the treatment of flue dust. The Dwight-Lloyd machine is used in many plants for agglomerating flotation concentrates and at the same time reducing the sulfur content to furnace requirements and it has become standard practice to treat iron blast-furnace flue dust by either the Greenawalt or Dwight-Lloyd machine, so that it can be recharged into the furnace. The mining of low-grade magnetite iron deposits and their beneficiating by grinding and magnetic separation resulted in a fine concentrate extremely detrimental to blast-furnace practice. These concentrates are sintered and made into ideal material for blast-furnace use. Incidentally, coke savings of about 400 lb. per ton of pig are reported.

Little drilling has been done in Kentucky and Tennessee in 1923, with the exception of the Kettle Creek area on the Kentucky-Tennessee line. Oil prices fluctuated between $2.86 and $1.36 Per bbl. for light oil. The Kentucky production was slightly over 8,000,000 bbl., being 1,000,000 bbl. less than during 1922. Tennessee production was approximately 8500 bbl., being a decrease of 1000 bbl, over. 1922. During 1923, the first producing well was brought in, in Clay County, Tenn. Production in Tennessee will undoubtedly increase considerably in 1924, and Kentucky production will probably increase slightly. THE year 1923 has been a dull period in oil development in Kentucky and Tennessee, with the exception of the Kettle Creek area along the Tennessee-Kentucky line, in Clinton and Cumberland Counties, Kentucky, and Clay County, Tennessee. The price of oil during the year has been so low that wildcatters have shown little interest in drilling. At the beginning of the year, light oil sold for $2.31 per barrel and medium oil for $2.06 per, barrel. Prices increased to the highest point for the year in February, when light oil brought $2.86 per barrel and medium oil, $2.61. In April, prices had declined 35 c. while in May an additional decline of 25 c. went into effect. During June, prices declined 20 c. per barrel; during July, 45 c. per barrel; remained stationary during August and September, and dropped during November and December to the low price of $1.36 per barrel for light and $1.21 for medium oil. At present, an increase of 29 c. has brought the price of light oil up to $1.55, and indications are that the price will continue to increase during the coming months. It can readily be seen that during 1923 the price of oil was such as to prevent any drilling except that necessary to hold leases and to maintain production enough to take care of overhead expenses.

The thermodynamics of the set of functions including the activation enthalpy. the activation free energy, and the activation entropy for the motion of dislocations at low temperatures is formulated without a specific model or a mechanism. The behniiior near absolute zero of all these functions and of other relevant quantities related to dislocation mobility Is examined in the light of the third law of thermodynamics. The velocity measurements of Stein and Low for edge dislocations in Si-Fe are used .for illustrotion. In the plastic deformation of crystalline materials, a fundamental assumption, which is supported by direct measurements using etch-pit techniques,'-4 is that the average velocity of a certain mobile dislocation is a single-valued function of temperature and the effective shear stress exerted on the mobile dislocation: Sometimes under certain assumptions, even without direct dislocation-velocity measurements, an activation volume can be obtained from a change in strain rate in a simple tension test. Similarly an ac tivation enthalpy can be obtained by changing the temperature in a creep test. However, the assumptions involved should be studied carefully before using the results of these tests. Consider, for example, a tensile specimen at some stage of deformation with a distribution of mobile dislocations. Let the total length of dislocations of type i be pi per unit volume. The Burgers vector of these dislocations is hi which makes an angle ?i with the tensile axis. With respect to the same tensile axis, let the normal of the slip plane of these dislocations

While mining silver at Butte in 1882, Marcus Daly is reputed to have told his partners in The Anaconda Silver Mining Co., "It looks rather gloomy. The vein is running into copper." Recently, The Anaconda Co. authorized an $11 million expenditure to be made over the next five years to ensure their "running into copper" at deep levels for many more years. The new development program is designed to permit both deeper and more widespread selective mining in "the richest hill on earth" by means of additional shaft-sinking, reactivating closed mines, and establishing new haulageways and centralized hoisting facilities. Historically a deep level selective mining camp, Butte will now continue its uncommon use of three main types of mining methods at one camp-selective mining, block caving, and open pit mining. It was thought by some people that the construction of the Kelley shaft and the subsequent beginning of block caving operations in 1952-outgrowth of the Greater Butte Project-signaled the end of stope mining of high-grade ores at depth. This feeling became more pronounced when, in 1957, the Berkeley open pit commenced operations. During recent years, the tonnage of ore mined selectively underground has decreased, but the new program will maintain the position of selective underground mining in the overall picture of the Butte operations for many years to come.

While our coal-mining practice, in regard to hauling on main roads, has advanced very rapidly in recent years by means of compressed air, electricity and ropes, that of gathering from rooms or working-places has remained almost stationary. Few large mines are without some method of mechanical haulage on main roads, but the gathering from working-places is still done almost entirely by means of animals or men. An effort to improve this has been made recently by the Consolidation Coal Company, under the direction of the writer, at its mines in the Georges Creek region. The seam worked is the Pittsburg bed, known locally as the " Big Vein." It is from 8 to 12 feet thick. Immediately overlying the coal there is from 5 to 6 feet of " rashings," consisting of thin alternating beds of shale and coal, which disintegrate rapidly on exposure to the air, and making a very treacherous roof. Rooms are driven from 12 to 15 ft. wide, with a single track close to one side. A line of posts is placed just far enough from this side to leave a clear space for the mine-car with a driver at the brake. This brings the post not far from the middle of the cross-bar, and provides more effectual support than if placed at the end. The tracks in these rooms are usually of 4 in. x 4 in. oak scantling, though of late years, owing to the advance in the price of lumber and the reduction in steel rails, more of the latter are being used. This track is laid by the miner. His pay for the work is included in the price per ton for mining. It is therefore, as a rule, unskillfully and often carelessly laid, and cannot be relied upon to carry safely any weight materially greater than the loaded mine-car. The sudden death of Captain Jones, September 28,1889, became known to his fellow-members on the eve of the Ottawa meeting of the Institute; and at that meeting, Mr. Charles Albert Ashburner, of Pittsburgh, expressed with unaffected feeling and unpremeditated eloquence the sorrow of all. Mr. Ashburner subsequently undertook to revise and extend, for in in the Transactions, the remarks he had made at Ottawa; but death surprised him also, in the midst of his labors; and it has become my duty and privilege to prepare from the memoranda he left behind, the present brief and inadequate notice. To me, who knew and loved them both, this task of double sorrow recalls them both, with a peculiar sense of presence and of absence. They seem to speak from another land, not far away, yet not with human voices—like an echo and its echo. William Richard Jones was born in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, February 23, 1839. His father was Rev. John G. Jones, a Welsh minister, who had immigrated to the United States in 1832. William was the eldest son, and his father's failing health made it necessary for him to begin early the work of self-support. At the age of ten, he was apprenticed to the Crane Iron company, of Catasauqua, and in this humble capacity entered upon the profession in which he was to become famous. Unquestionably, the thorough acquaintance with all details, acquired by working his way from the bottom to the top, was one secret of the conspicuous executive ability which characterized him in the height of his career. According to a letter from Mr. J. H. Geer, Assistant Chief Engineer of the Cambria Iron Company, Mr. Jones entered the service of that company in 1858 or 1859 as a machinist, and continued to work in that capacity until July, 1862, when he enlisted as a private in the 133d Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, in which he afterwards commanded a company. Since about 70 per cent. of the total cost of mining is due to underground work which is out of sight, it is essential that expenditures should be made here to the best advantage. A great many mistakes have been made which were expensive, but perhaps these have not even been detected by mine owners. In the future these may be minimized to some extent, especially if there is cooperative effort on the part of each employee. I have been interested in this subject for some years and have tried to deduce principles and methods. These have proved highly advantageous and may also be of help to others. Some corporations, like the United States Steel, and the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., have done a great deal in this field by having stated meetings of their organizations, with the view to interchanging ideas among their men and educating them along the lines of concerted effort. Since no man knows all about the various branches of mining, it is advisable that frequent meetings of the operating department be held for the interchange of ideas and that all members of the organization have an opportunity to express themselves on the various subjects. It has often been found that in discussions between heads of departments, foremen and bosses, many valuable suggestions may be obtained which promote the best interests of the company. The method regarded as the most conducive to cooperative effort, and pursued by the organization, is to analyze and develop the different phases of various mining subjects at regular meetings. Nine Foremen's Dinners In the latter half of 1912, the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Go. gave monthly dinners to the men in the operating departments. Those who attended were superintendents, foremen, shift bosses, engineers, geologists, and heads of all departments, making a total of about 75 men. This field in 1933 continued as in 1932, although to a much less extent, to dominate the drilling and production situation throughout the oil business. The 2466 producers completed in this field during the year are 28 per cent of such wells completed in the United States. The 2556 completions reported in the five counties within which the East Texas field lies are 21 per cent of all such wells reported in the United States. It follows that with such a command of the development situation, every other factor with regard to this field has an important bearing on the entire oil business. As a consequence, the important developments in the East Texas field are the important developments of the year. Very little new productive territory was added to the already known limits of this enormous field. On the other hand, drilling has shown that with a few very minor exceptions this field is a continuous productive area, with a regular outline and no "dry spots" other than that of a single well surrounded by producing wells. Drilling was confined to the already proven limits of the field. This consisted essentially of more adequate coverage of leases by wells, the meeting of required offsets and the drilling of a large number of small tracts which developed from subdivision of larger leases due to court action and other causes. The allowable throughout the year was, with minor variable factors, on a per-well basis. With the steady decline in per-well allowable after May, every operator was faced with declining

COMMON salt is mentioned in the most ancient writings as an impor-tant article of diet. It is fairly certain that it was used by men and animals long before the dawn of civilization. Its presence in natural springs has often been the determining factor in colonization; wars have been fought for possession of salt deposits; trade routes have been estab-lished expressly for the purpose of traffic in salt. Naturally this led men into adventures and discoveries that altered history and advanced civilization. In the early days the uses for salt were few and the methods of manu-facture were crude and the purity low when compared to salt of the pres-ent day. Then the salt came largely from springs, shallow wells or the ocean, while today deep wells must be drilled to the natural brines or beds of rock -salt and spacious shafts sunk so that the ancient deposits may be made to yield their supply of stored mineral.

Gentlemen:-I herewith present a report on some of the more important activities of the Institute for the year 1921. The present incumbent took. over the active management of the Secretary's office on the first of July and his, work was facilitated, while becoming acquainted with the routine of the office, by the constant and., kindly assistance of the former, Secretary, Mr. Stoughton, during the following three months, and that no interruption occurred inn its regular and smooth operation is due to him and to the Assistant Secretary, who has always been ready to give the benefit of his experience and assistance. MINING AND METALLURGY Through the efforts of President Ludlow and the generous assistance of one of our members, coupled with the excellent work of Major Barbour, MINING AND METALLURGY has, during recent months, shown constant improvement, which could not have taken place, however, had it not been, for the support given by a number of our contributing members. We have every reason to feel encouraged with respect to the quality of the publication and its cost of production. For the year 1921, the net cost of MINING AND METALLURGY was about fifty cents per member, per annum. Occasional letters are received criticizing the Board for producing this publication, but they are more than offset by letters of approval. When the, full purpose of the publication is appreciated, criticism ceases. The elimination of MINING AND METALLURGY and reversion to free distribution of all papers to all members, whether desired or not, would mean such a heavy additional expense that the number of papers would have to be much curtailed. The generous cooperation of members in sending for only such papers as they particularly desired has saved, the Institute thousands of dollars. A plan is being worked out that will materially assist in securing a prompt distribution to members of all pamphlets dealing with subjects in which they are especially interested.

A geological map of a State involves very much, and its pre sentation to the public incurs grave responsibilities. It has been for a long time my earnest desire to bring out and place before the pub lic a geological map of New York which might be creditable to the State and worthy of a place among her scientific publications. We have done much for the advancement of geological science in this State—very much, and in many directions—but unfortunately, this feature, which should have been made the basis of all our work, has been too long neglected and delayed. For twenty-five years I have been laboring and looking forward to this consummation. I have recorded the field-work, systematic and desultory, upon such maps as were available for this use; and notwithstanding their imperfec tion, I have been able to transfer this recorded information to a more perfect base, which it is hoped will be completed during the early months of the next year. In 1883 I had combined, upon a small map of the State, the in formation which we possessed at that time, and communicated the same with my annual report to the Legislature. The report mas published in the regular course, but the special appropriation made for the map was vetoed by the Governor. Not discouraged by this untoward and unexpected circumstance, I continued my work, and made every effort to render the map more complete, preparatory to its communication with the next annual report. I brought together all the information within my reach, whether published or unpublished, reviewing and revising, as far as practicable, the work done by myself and assistants in southern and southeastern New York.
