Grain refinement in stirred melts has previously been shown to arise from dendrite segmentation. The present work discusses experiments capable of distinguishing between remelting and mechanical effects which result from fluid motion. Nucleation of still un-dercooled Sn-1 pct Pb melts with a single-crystal seed shows that the grain size of the resulting ingots decreases as the undercooling at nucleation increases up to about 1Z0C, then increases again for larger undercoolings. Pure melts exhibit little refinement as a result of nucleation at any undercooling up to 12°C. The presence of fluid motion gives rise to grain multiplication in pure melts, but the magnitude of this effect is partly obscured by solid-state pain growth. The results indicate that two grain-multiplication pvocesses can operate, one which involves dendrite remelt ing, and another associated with fluid motion. Small ingot experiments indicated that an equiaxed transition can be caused by fluid motion. THE presence of forced convection during recales-cence of undercooled Sn-1.3 pct Pb melts has been shown to give rise to extensive grain refinement during solidification of small ingots of this alloy.''2 In Ref. 2, this refining was shown to result entirely from dendrite fragmentation and not from any nucleation mechanism. The purpose of the present work is to establish what processes lead to dendrite segmentation. Experiments were therefore carried out to determine the resulting structure of both pure tin and Sn-1 pct Pb melts, nucleated at various undercoolings by single-crystal seeds in the absence of forced or natural convection. By comparing the information obtained from these experiments with the results of Refs. 1 and 2, the effects of fluid motion on the ingot structure, and the details of the segmentation mechanisms, should become clear. The results of these experiments should also be helpful in understanding the solidification structures of larger ingots since natural convection, which is known to play an important role in determining ingot structure13 differs only in degree from the fluid-motion effects studied here. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 was constructed to permit controlled nucleation of stirred or unstirred supercooled melts using a seed oriented in the tin dendrite growth direction. Because the melts, in all cases, were capable of larger supercoolings than the one used in each experiment, the structure observed always resulted from a single nucleation event at the surface. The sequential procedure was as follows: Tin was melted under purified hydrogen and the oxide removed at a temperature of 450°C . Electromagnetic stirring was then used to clear the surface completely and during this time the guide tube was lowered underneath the melt surface. A pointed Czochralski-like crystal was then propagated from a specially prepared tin dendrite seed4 inside the guide tube while the temperature of the bulk melt was held just above the melting point, ensuring a perfectly clean seed which was epitaxial with the original dendrite. The dendrite and epitaxial seed, still in the guide tube, were withdrawn from the melt which, in turn, was undercooled to 2C° below the temperature at which the nucleation experiment was to be performed. The melt was held there for several minutes, both in stirred and in still-melt experiments. The temperature was next raised to the required value and the melt nucleated by the carrot seed inside the guide tube, the heater power being shut off just after nucleation. In experiments where quenching after nucleation was required, a high-density graphite crucible was used, but otherwise the procedure was as described above. The temperature gradient in the melt before nucleation was kept below 1C° per cm by carrying the experiment out just below the center of the heater shown in Fig. 1.

AS a part of the fundamental research program of Aluminum Research Laboratories, some data were obtained on the ternary system Mg-Al-Mn. As very little information on the magnesium corner of this diagram has heretofore been published, it seems desirable to make available the values found for the liquidus and solidus surfaces of this system. Procedure The settling procedure was used for the determination of the liquidus compositions. Metallo-graphic examination of quenched samples, and stress-rupture upon incipient melting, were used for the solidus determinations. The settling procedure has been described in a previous paper.' Briefly, this method involved saturating the alloy with manganese at a temperature substantially above that at which the sohbility was to be determined, then cooling the melt to the latter temperature, and holding it at that temperature for a substantial period of time. Samples for analysis .were carefully ladled from the upper portion of the melt at hourly intervals during the holding period. After the ladling of each sample, the melt was stirred to redistribute some of the manganese that had already settled, because it appeared that when the latter particles of manganese again settled, they aided in carrying down more of the manganese and thus hastened the attainment of equilibrium. The melts were prepared and held in a No. 8 Tercod crucible holding approximately 4 lb of metal. The manganese was added either in the form of a prealloyed ingot (Dow M) containing about 1.5 pct Mn or by the use of a flux (Dow 250) containing manganese chloride. In calculating the flux additions, it was assumed that the manganese introduced would be equal to 22 pct of the total weight of the flux. Temperatures were measured with an iron-constantan thermocouple enclosed in a seamless steel tube, the lower end of which was welded shut. This protection tube also served as a stirring rod. The samples ladled from the upper portions of the melts at the various intervals were analyzed for aluminum, manganese, and iron. When making the alloys which were to be used for the determination of the solidus, 2½ in. diam tilt mold ingots were cast, scalped to 2.0 in. in diam, and extruded into ? in. diam wire. The principal impurities in the melts for this investigation were iron and silicon; their total not exceeding 0.03 pct. Portions of the wire, approximately 2 in. in length, were enclosed in stainless steel capsules for protection from the atmosphere. Bundles of these capsules, with a dummy capsule containing an iron-constantan thermocouple, were heated inside a large steel block (acting as a heat reservoir) in a closed circulating-air type electric furnace. At ap- propriate times, the capsules were removed and quenched in water. The wires were examined metallographically to determine the temperature of initial melting. Short times at temperature were used at the beginning for wire specimens of all alloys to obtain quickly the approximate temperatures at which melting could be first observed. When approximate solidus temperatures had thus been determined, equilibrium heating was attempted. This equilibrium heating consisted of an 8 or 16 hr period at a temperature, about 50 °F below the lowest temperature at which melting occurred when short heating cycles were used, followed by further heating for 1 hr periods at consecutive 10" higher temperatures. The theory for the method of stress-rupture at incipient melting has been well covereda and its limitations are recognized. Thus, if the interfacial tensions are such that the first minute quantity of liquid is "bunched up" at the grain boundary junctions instead of spreading out along the grain boundaries,³ temperatures higher than the solidus are required before melting will be manifested by rupture of the specimen. This point will be elaborated later. Specimens of the wires with a reduced section (approximately 1/16 in. diam) were suspended vertically in a tubular furnace. The setup used is shown in Fig. 1. The clamp holding the specimen was made from alumel thermocouple wire and the thermocouple was thus completed across the specimen by attaching a chrome1 wire to its lower end. Temperatures were read from a Speedomax recorder used in conjunction with a calibrated thermocouple. The small weight attached to the specimen and a vibrator attached to the furnace tube, to aid in distributing the molten constituent along the grain boundaries, were used to bring about rupture at a temperature closely approximating the solidus. The specimens were heated at a rate of about 5°C per min. The rupture of the specimens was indicated both by sound and by the action of the recorder. An argon atmosphere containing a small amount of SO² was used for protection of the specimen. The assembly was taken out of the furnace immediately following rupture and the specimen removed. Some of the broken specimens were examined metallographically and will be referred to later. Results and Discussion Fig. 2 shows a set of typical time-composition curves for liquid samples of the Mg-Al-Mn alloys used for the settling tests. The data as presented

The paper presents the results of experiments on the anelastic. behavior of gold, as manifested by grain boundary relaxation. Two grain boundary internal friction peaks are found for 99.9998 pct Au. It is found that the peaks are associated with primary and secondary recrystallization. However, the existence of two discrete peaks cannot be explained on the basis of grain size and shape alone. It is suggested that grain boundary stability, as determined by orientation, plays a role in the observed effects. EVIDENCE for the viscous behavior of grain boundaries in metals has been presented in recent years by several investigators, based upon studies of various anelastic effects, especially internal friction. KG1 has contributed greatly to this field, having put forward a coherent body of evidence for stress relaxation by the viscous intercrystalline flow mechanism. In this connection, he has made extensive use of pure aluminum (99.991 pct) as the test material, although he has also studied other metals and alloys, including pure iron (Puron).² Rotherham, Smith, and Greenough³ have studied the internal friction of pure tin, interpreting their results in a manner similar to that of KG. In view of the importance of such studies in shedding light upon the fundamental structure and behavior of the grain boundaries in pure metals, it appears that the use of a very pure test material which is inert to its environment should provide useful information on anelastic properties and the source of such behavior in pure metals. The present work was carried out on spectrograph-ically pure, 99.9998 pct Au, free of all impurities except for a trace of silver, estimated to be present to the extent of about 0.0002 pct. The term "pure gold" will hereafter refer to this very pure material. Gold of commercial purity, 99.98 pct, was also studied to observe the effects of small amounts of impurities. A pure gold "single crystal" specimen was also tested for comparison. The variation of the internal friction and rigidity modulus as a function of temperature was determined by means of a torsion pendulum apparatus employing extremely low stress amplitudes and a frequency of vibration of the order of 1 cycle per sec. A 12 in. length of 0.031 in. (20 gage) gold wire formed the suspension element. The apparatus was similar to that described by Ke.l The test procedure and the basic requirements to be met for obtaining useful experimental data by this method have been given elsewhere.1,2 It should be made clear that in all of the experiments to be described, the internal friction and rigidity were independent of the amplitude of torsional vibration. The semilog plot of amplitude of vibration vs ordinal number of vibration was a straight line. This was carefully verified for each internal friction measurement. The linear variation shows that the internal friction was independent of stress; i.e., that the specimens were not being cold-worked during testing. The reproducibility of the internal friction curves, which were obtained by cyclic heating and cooling, indicates that the gold was unaffected by its environment during the tests. The measure of internal friction adopted in the present study is the conventional "logarithmic decrement," defined as follows: log. dec. = l/n In A0/An [I] where n is the number of cycles or vibrations; A,, the initial amplitude of vibration; and An, the amplitude after the nth cycle. When the logarithmic decrement is small, the shear modulus, G, of the wire is proportional to the square of the frequency of vibration provided the length and radius of the wire are kept constant. A plot of frequency squared vs temperature gives the following ratio:' This expresses the fraction of the stress which has not been relaxed at a given temperature. Gr and Gv are the relaxed and unrelaxed moduli, respectively. The frequency of vibration in the polycrys-talline specimen is fp, and the frequency of vibration of a single crystal is f8. This latter quantity is obtained simply by extrapolating the linear, low temperature portion of the curve of frequency squared vs temperature for the polycrystalline specimens. The theory of viscous grain boundary stress relaxation as demonstrated by the anelastic behavior of metals has been discussed in detail by Zener4 and need not be reproduced here. Experimental Results Initial measurements of the internal friction of pure gold were carried out on specimens which had been drawn with no intermediate annealing, resulting in a material which had undergone approximately 99 pct reduction of area in final processing. Annealing was then carried out at successively higher temperatures starting at 400°F for 1 hr and proceeding in this manner to as high as 1600°F in 100°F intervals. After each annealing treatment an internal friction and rigidity vs temperature curve was obtained over the range from room temperature to the particular annealing temperature. The raceway in front of the tuyere of the blast furnace has been studied quantitatively and a correlation obtained for the penetrastudiedtion of the blast. Some evidence is presented for the height and width of the raceway which suggests that all the raceways of a ffurnace overlap. The size of the coke in this zone has been measfurnaceoverlap.ured photographically during normal operation and results are given for the various areas. IN an earlier paper,' it was shown that a raceway exists opposite each tuyere of a blast furnace. This raceway is formed by the jet effect of the air emerging from the tuyere and consists essentially of a turbulence in which coke particles are recir-culated at high speed. Its presence was deduced originally from observations on movies taken with a high-speed camera through the tuyeres of various furnaces and was confirmed by experiments made on a model. In the model described,' this raceway was shown as operating in a vertical plane only, although there was a suggestion in the motion-picture film exhibited at that time that the raceway was three dimensional, unless artificially restricted. There was also some doubt then about the factors influencing its size. This paper describes the next steps in the investigation. Since the size of the raceway is obviously of importance in the operation of the furnace, it seemed worth while to study the subject more carefully. It is probably in this region that about half the coke in the furnace is consumed, so that the movement of the stock column may well be controlled by raceway behavior. Furthermore, there is some evidence to suggest that the coke is packed densely in the center of the furnace to form the "dead man" and more loosely above the raceway. It is therefore probable that the bulk of the gases passing up the stack flow from the top surface of this raceway. Clearly then, a knowledge of this critical zone is of interest to the blast furnace operator, and the first half of this report is devoted to a quantitative discussion of the subject. A further topic of interest among operators is the degree of breakdown of coke in the furnace, with which is inseparably linked the importance of a strong coke. Indeed, the whole question of the optimum size and type of coke may be as dependent on the condition of the coke in the bottom of the blast furnace as at the top. Attempts have been made from time to time to obtain samples of coke from the tuyeres and other furnace openings but they all suffer from the fact that the coke is filled to a varying degree with metal and slag and is probably broken up by the very act of taking the sample. It has proved difficult to make any reliable studies of coke size by these methods. However, it did seem possible to use the highspeed movies mentioned earlier1 to estimate the size of the coke. These movies provide an accurate record of individual coke particles so that, in theory at least, it should be possible to measure the size of the particles one by one and to obtain, for the first time, information on the coke being blown around the raceway under actual operating conditions while the furnace is performing normally. Such a study has been made and is discussed in the second half of this paper. The results obtained enabled the blast furnace data to be correlated with the model results given in the first half. Raceway Size In order to make a quantitative study of the size of the raceway it was necessary to devise some apparatus of laboratory scale, which could be handled quickly and easily. This focused attention on models, which in turn means that the laws of similarity governing this particular process must be ascertained. Method of Procedure: Since the work was to be carried out on a smaller scale than the blast furnace, the linear dimensions of the model became unimportant provided that the scale was known; it is only important to insure that the container does not affect the raceway being observed. First response to large-scale water flooding in the fractured very low permeability Spraberry sand has led to a new unique cyclic operation. Capacity water injection is used to restore reservoir pressure. This is followed by marly months production without water irzjection and the cycle repeated. Expansion of the oil, rock and water during pressure decline expels part of the fluids but capillary forces hold much of the injected water in the rock. At least with reservoir pressure restored and with partial water flood development, field performance has proved this cyclic operation is capable of producing oil from the nzatrix rock at least 50 per cent faster and with lower water percentage than is imbibition of water at stable reservoir pressure. INTRODUCTION The Spraberry Field of West Texas presents unusual problems for both primary production and water flooding. Extensive interconnected vertical fractures in the fractional-md sandstone permitted recovery of oil on 160-acre well spacing, but they made capillary end effects dominant. Primary recovery by solution gas drive is less than 10 per cent of oil in place. The concept of displacement of oil from the sand matrix by capillary irnbibition of water has led to field techniques which promise greatly increased oil recovery. Free exchange of laboratory research, reservoir information and results of field pilot tests among the various companies has been very important in development of this technology. Five units covering a total of 170,000 acres have been formed for water flooding, and 10 other areas covering an additional 175,500 acres are in various stages of unitization. Part of the Driver Unit reaching fillup first has demonstrated very unusual waterflood behavior and indicated numerous operating problems that will develop within and among the various units. SPRABERRY ROCK AND PRIMARY PERFORMANCE The Spraberry, discovered in February, 1949, is a 1,000-ft section of sandstones, shales and limestones with two main oil productive members: a 10-15 ft sand near the top and a 10-15 ft sand near the base. In part of the field some thinner intermediate sands are oil productive, and others are water bearing. All sands have permeabilities of 1 md or less and porosities of 8-15 per cent. Ordinary core analysis and electric and radiation logs are ineffective in differentiating between oil productive and nonprcductive sands. Sands capable of containing producible oil are best identified by mercury injection capillary pressure measurement and, in some cases, by core water saturation. About 3,500 wells have been drilled in the 500,000-acre trend. Vertical fractures were observed in practically all Spraberry cores. Continuity and interconnection of fractures were confirmed by pressure interference among wells during early development.' Major fractures trend northeast-southwest as indicated by oriented cores and confirmed by five fluid injection tests, by analysis of the pressure transients observed during development,''' and by three interference tests in the Driver Unit Water Flood reported herein. Fracture spac- ing probably averages inches to a few feet. Spraberry wells typically produced 100-400 BOPD initially after hydrauLic fracture treatments. By 1962 oil production had declined to an average of 12 bbl/well/day, near the economic Limits of operation. Reservoir pressure had declined from 2,300 psi initially in the Upper Spraberry and 2,500 psi in the Lower Spraberry to 500-1,000 psi. Partial closing of the fractures with declining reservoir pressure is believed to be the cause of such low oil production rates at these relatively high reservoir pressures. Cumulative recovery of 208 million bbl of oil is 80 to 90 per cent of that recoverable by primary means. Performance of the entire reservoir is summarized in Fig. 1. IMBIBITION WATER FLOODING By 1952 reservoir performance indicated low primary recoveries. Most engineers, expecting serious channeling of injected fluids through the fractures, held little hope for secondary recovery. With its extensive background of research on the fundamentals of fluid flow within reservoir rocks, Atlantic's Research and Development Division on short notice in 1952 conceived that displacement of oil by capillary imbibition of water into the rock might significantly increase Spraberry recovery. Laboratory data reported by Brownscombe and Dyes scaled to probable reservoir conditions showed potential waterflood recovery equal to or greater than primary recovery with a 10-15 year flood life.= A pilot test using three 40-acre injection wells, one central producing well and 18 surrounding observation wells demonstrated technical feasibility of the process. THE determination of the self-diffusion coefficient of magnesium has been made possible recently by discovery1-1 of a radioactive isotope, Mg28 having a half-life of 21.3 hr,1 and subject to manufacture in useful quantity. In the present research this material was condensed from the vapor phase upon a surface of high purity magnesium. The progress of diffusion of the tracer atoms into polycrystalline magnesium was followed by machining layers and measuring the change in the intensity of radiation as a function of the distance of each layer from the surface. The self-diffusion coefficient was found to be 2.1 X 10-8 sq cm per sec at 627°C, 3.6 X 10-9 sq cm per sec at 551°C, and 4.4 X 10-10sq cm per sec at 468°C; the activation energy is about 32,000 cal per mol. Experimental Procedure Since there was no other published measurement of a diffusion velocity in any magnesium-base material, is was necessary to employ a number of new experimental techniques. The short half-life of Mg28 made it necessary to complete the entire experimental procedure within three or four days. This meant that the work had to be done where a cyclotron was readily accessible and that all operations, prior to the diffusion heat treatment, had to be so designed as to minimize their time requirements. Unusual problems were imposed also by the chemical reactivity of magnesium, its high vapor pressure, and the fact that no satisfactory method for elec-trodepositing magnesium on magnesium is presently available. Finally, the machining and handling of the easily air-borne radioactive-magnesium chips involved certain health hazards, resulting in the need for further experimental restrictions. Preparation of Mg28 The Mg28 was produced in the Carnegie Institute of Technology syncrocyclotron by the neutron spallation of chlorine.5 his involved bombarding a 2 gram crystal of high purity NaCl with a beam of 350 mev protons for a period of 2 hr, after which the crystal was dissolved in warm water and the Mg28 was concentrated and purified by chemical means (see Appendix). About 50 microcuries of Mg28 thus were obtained in the form of magnesium oxinate (8 hydroxyquin-olatc?), which was ignited in air to produce MgO. This in turn was reduced to magnesium metal vapor, by the method of Russell, Taylor, and Cooper," in the vacuum apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 1. Here the essential part is a tantalum ribbon, slightly dished to receive the MgO. The ribbon, pre- viously outgassed at high temperature, is heated to about 1700°C by passing an electric current through it, whereupon tantalum oxide is formed, magnesium vapor is released almost instantaneously, and condensed partly upon the diffusion sample. Diffusion-Sample Preparation: Hot-extruded magnesium rod, 21/32 in. round was used in making the diffusion specimens. The magnesium analyzed as follows: 0.004 pct Al, 0.027 pct Fe, 0.040 pct Mn, 0.0004 pct Cu, 0.0002 pct Ni, and less than 0.01 pct Ca, 0.0004 pct Pb, 0.0011 pct Si, 0.001 pct Sn, and 0.001 pct Zn. A brief study of the crystal texture of this material revealed a sharp fiber texture with the (001) plane roughly parallel to the extrusion axis. Cylindrical samples 1/2 in. long by 5/8 in. were machined from this rod, the end faces dressed on 3/0 emery, and lightly etched with 20 pct HC1 in water. These samples then were annealed for at least twice the intended time of diffusion, at the intended diffusion temperature, in order to stabilize the grain structure at about 1 mm average diameter. The annealing treatments were conducted in argon in the same apparatus and in the same manner as the subsequent diffusion treatments, which will be described presently. Thus, a strain-free plane surface was produced, but there remained a layer of MgO which had largely to be removed before the layer of Mg28 was deposited. Most of this layer was taken off by two light passes over 3/0 emery paper. The balance of the oxide and a thin layer of metal were then removed by etching 5 to 10 min in 4 pct nital (4 pct HNO3 and 96 pct ethyl alcohol) made with absolute alcohol. There followed immediately three quick rinses in: 1-49 1/2 pct methanol, 49 1/2 pct acetone, and 1 pct formic acid, 2-50 pct methanol and 50 pct acetone, and 3-pure benzene. This procedure is essentially that of Sturkey.7 The resulting surface, which was of almost elec-tropolished brightness, remained plane and was free of cold work. Previous studies have demonstrated the possibility of using aqua regia-extractable copper and zinc in plutonic rocks in exploration geochemistry. The present investigation compares this method of extraction with hydrofluoric-perchloric acid attack and bisulfate fusion in terms of precision and discrimination between high and low concentrations. Statistical treatment of data shows that the overall performance of the aqua regia method compares very favorably with other methods of attack.

Scores of visitors who had never in their lives seen a piece of rough-and-ready mining machinery flocked around the display of Russian equipment presented as part of the Soviet Exhibition at New York's Coliseum. The Russian show, which ran from June 30 to August 10, presented an impressive view of an emerging technology. The exhibitors, however, made little attempt to appeal to the visitor who came only to be amused. In the mining show, as well as elsewhere throughout the exposition, the exhibits were devastatingly highbrow. If a coal mine's hydraulic roof support were "designed to support the prop- , free face front in longwall faces of flat seams, from 1.0 to 1.6 m thick, with medium-stable side rock," the visitors were told just that.

Leaching manganese-bearing materials with NaOH to remove caustic-soluble silica has been demonstrated as a method for up- grading manganese. Those materials containing opaline varieties of silica respond most readily. Spent leach liquors are regenerated by treatment with lime to precipitate calcium silicate and to reactivate the NaOH for leaching.

Robert Campbell Gemmell, assistant managing director of the Jackling allied porphyry mining properties in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada, died suddenly on Oct. 25, of heart trouble, while traveling from Hurley, N. M., to Los Angeles. To shape justly even an outline of the brilliant career and uniquely charming personality of Mr; Gemmell is well-nigh impossible, and any effort so to do can but demonstrate the inadequacy of language to sound the depths of soul-stirring sentiments. To touch upon his more important work, and afford even a limited conception of his general worth and character, is all I can hope to do.

Flotation is effected in the pH ranges in which hydrolysis of the metal ions comprising the mineral occurs. The roles of mineral solubility and precipitate formation are suggested.

The US Bureau of Mines, in close cooperation with the mining industry, has recently established several improved face ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include coursing the primary face intake from tailgate to headgate, installing curtains at the intake end of the longwall face, and identifying improved techniques for measuring face ventilation parameters on longwall sections. Applying these techniques throughout the mining industry should reduce the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable dust.

Robert Campbell Gemmell, assistant managing director of the Jackling allied porphyry mining properties in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada, died suddenly on Oct. 25, of heart trouble, while traveling from Hurley, N. M., to Los Angeles. To shape justly even an outline of the brilliant career and uniquely charming personality of Mr; Gemmell is well-nigh impossible, and any effort so to do can but demonstrate the inadequacy of language to sound the depths of soul-stirring sentiments. To touch upon his more important work, and afford even a limited conception of his general worth and character, is all I can hope to do.
