OF the forty or more excursions provided for the delegates to the World Engineering Congress at Tokyo, the trip to the Ashio copper mine stands out as one of the most enjoyable. In every detail looking to our comfort and pleasure the Furukawa company, our hosts, were admirable. This company operates five other copper mines, also gold and coal mines. Ashio is the largest with an annual production of about 14,000 tons of copper. It has been continuously worked since 1620, and doubtless was one of the sources of copper used in the gigantic statues of Buddha of many hundred years earlier date.

IN spite of considerable interest among blast furnace operators on the question of the penetration of air into the furnace, there is still uncertainty as to how far the blast does, in fact, penetrate. Moreover, it is not always clear just what is meant by the word penetration in this sense. In 1952, Elliott et al.1 showed that at the end of each tuyere of a blast furnace there is more or less of a void. In this region, coke particles are blown around by the force of the air. During the recent expansion of precipitate copper production at the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corp., Santa Rita, N. Mex., local studies of the dump leaching process were intensified. As these studies progressed, it became apparent that a reliable method for locating leach solutions within the dump was required, since the contact between the leach solutions and the copper-bearing ma.teria1 determines recovery. In the past, the problem of determining leach solution contact has been attacked by various methods, including destructive testing (dump dissection), indirect observation (such as chloride or dye tracers) and mathematical or laboratory model studies, but they have not proved completely satisfactory. The investigation of methods for in situ observation of leach solutions led to consideration of radiation logging in drillholes, which are subsurface techniques used in petroleum exploration and development for locating fluids and measuring porosity. A significant advantage of radiation logging is that, unlike other types of logging, measurements may be made in cased holes, since gamma rays and neutrons will penetrate steel and cement. Three techniques are currently used at Chino: Natural gamma ray logging; neutron-neutron, or moisture logging; and gamma-gamma, or bulk density logging.

This paper discusses recent technology dealing with the use of computer graphics in the mining industry. It presents a newly developed computer software package specifically designed for use in underground mining operations. This software package, developed under a US Bureau of Mines contract, 1) displays mine ventilation schematics and other representative illustrations for a real time data acquisition system and 2) uses the Bureau-owned Minefire and Ventilation Code for display of ventilation and contamination predictions on the microprocessor system. The package uses a unique system of display indexing that provides a simple yet efficient method of recalling a series of mine schematics detailing an underground operation and an alarm acknowledgment scheme that provides an effective method of identifying problem areas that may exist in the mine network. The package was written in Fortran for a 64-kilobyte, Z80-based microprocessor computer.

The annual review of mineral dressing was the subject of considerable discussion at the MBD meeting in New York last February. Because the amount of material now being published is so imposing, it was generally agreed that reviewers should try only to cite the items of importance. In order to conserve even more space, it was agreed to omit bibliographies. In reading these reviews, and those of the past two or three years, one is impressed by the advances in materials handling, the enlargement and the advances in automation of unit process equipment. Although there has been development of a variety of new concentration principles in flotation, magnetic separation, et al., the design of these principles into new plants has not been widespread. The probable reason is that the plants being built today are so large and costly that few are able to face the risk of any significant degree of experimentation. There are exceptions to this; for example, some of the chemical processes, but these are usually because there was no conventional process available. This situation should change in time as the ores amenable to our conventional methods become depleted.

Localized open pit slope failure was avoided as an apparent result of a practical rock mechanics program conducted at the Twin Buttes copper operation. The key to the program was the application of cable bolting, a technique that artificially supports open pit slopes using properly installed post-tensioned cables. As a result of the research and testing program, extensions of the cable bolting principal became significantly apparent. • The economics of artificial stabilization appear to be overwhelmingly favorable, and • Best practical applications are "final" pit slopes, slopes beneath permanent structures and potentially slope failing areas. Success of this research is manifested by the fact that similar stabilization systems are presently under consideration for Twin Buttes as well as other open pit operations.

In compliance with the suggestion in Mr. Emmons's paper on the Genesis of Certain Ore-Deposits (Trans. xv., 125), that facts should be accumulated for study and future compilation, I wish to put on record, before the data are lost, a section of the Animikie series of rocks and the vein-phenomena exposed by the explorations at the Duncan mine, Port Arthur, Thunder Bay, Lake Superior. This may serve as a supplement to my paper on this district (Trans. v., 473). I trust this information will not be without interest at. the present time. The recent discoveries of very rich silver-ores at Rabbit and Silver Mountains, on the same belt, have brought the district once more before the public; and a study of the facts here set forth may assist some fellow-engineer in the determination of the value of property offered for sale in this neighborhood. AEROFLOAT 25 is a complex mixture of free cresylic acid with aryl substituted dithiophosphoric acids, sulphides, disulphides, etc. Its complete composition has not been published by the makers or patentees. It is prepared1 by the reaction between phosphorus pentasulphide and carefully selected cresylic acid. We have been informed that this acid contains no phenol and very little cresol, and that it is rich in the higher alkyl phenols, particularly the xylenols. The reaction between a phenol ROH and phosphorus pentasulphide may produce compounds of the following type:2 [ ] Except for the simplest type, the thiophenols (ii), the boiling points of these compounds lie above 300" C. The amounts of the thianthren compounds formed from the five xylenols (if all these are present) will vary according to the position of the substituents. In an attempt to ascertain something of the nature of the reagent, fractional distillation under atmospheric pressure was undertaken. After outlining the growth of industrial research, the paper discusses one successful method for organizing and financing group research programs. A systematic procedure is advocated by which engineers and scientists can bring to management practical plans for cooperative research and development programs.

THE morphology and mechanism of the proeutectoid a and the eutectoid reactions have been recently investigated in some detail in an iodide-base Ti—7.22 pct Cr alloy.' These studies have now been extended to an iodide-base Ti—10.8 pct Cr alloy in order to evaluate the effects of composition on the proeutectoid and eutectoid transformations in titanium-chromium alloys. The alloy used in this investigation had the following composition: 10.8 Cr, 0.0327 0, 0.011 N, 0.0063 H, and 0.011 pct C. Chemistry of Iron Solution IRON is much more soluble in the ferrous than in the ferric form. Where, as in the case of the ferrous silicates and the sulphides, the iron is already in the ferrous form, it may go at once into solution and be removed, upon the breaking down of the parent rock. If in the ferric form, it must first be reduced; usually by the decay of organic matter, the demand of the decaying carbonaceous matter for oxygen being so great that the latter is abstracted from the ferric compounds and the iron is thereby reduced and rendered' soluble. The iron may go into solution as the sulphate, or in the presence of excess CO2 as ferrous carbonate. It is probably soluble as salts of the organic acids.1 Recent work indicates that these are important in the formation of bog ores.2 There is considerable variety of opinion concerning the behavior of these organic compounds.3 The secretions about the roots of plants and trees also cause the solution and removal of iron and a consequent bleaching of the soil.4 While the matter is not yet well understood, we can probably say definitely that the so-called organic acids are a group of colloids which possess slightly acid properties, and the salts of which are partly soluble

A jet slurry apparatus has been constructed to test corrosive/erosive wear properties of grinding ball metal. Plain high carbon steel heat treated to a hardness of about 60 Rc was used. Slurries of quartz and chalcopyrite ore concentrate were used as the jetting media. Weight loss due to pure corrosion was determined by the linear polarization technique. Weight loss due to pure erosion was determined by jetting while cathodically protecting the sample. By comparing the total weight loss with the sum of the weight losses from pure corrosion and pure erosion, it was found that there was a synergistic effect between corrosion and erosive wear. Corrosion rate, erosion rate, and total erosion/corrosion rate are given as a function of pH and mineral type.

THE present study was rude to determine the laws governing the formation of the primary? crystal structure during solidification. Most of the experiments were carried out on chill castings, but from the results it will be possible to draw certain conclusions as far as sand cast-ings are concerned. It is necessary to discuss first a number of theories, which are generally adopted for explaining the structure of an ingot. Usually, the structure FIG. 1.-VARIOUS ZONES IN A CHILL INGOT. off an ingot consists of the following three zones (Fig. 1): (1) a chill layer of small at. random oriented crystals; (2) a layer of columnar crystals; (3) a zone of equiaxed crystals. The tensile properties of the chill layer and the equiaxed range are usually much better than in the columnar range, particularly the planes that are formed by the columnar crystals growing from two sides at right angles leave low tensile properties. This is one of the reasons why colum-nar crystals in ingot structures are undesirable.

In November of 1957, the Aliquippa Works started operation of the third basic oxygen furnace shop in North America. This high speed basic steelmaking method provided a very economical increase in capacity at the Works. The success of these two (2) 81-ton furnaces led to the construction of a second B.O.F. shop, producing heats of 230 tons at J&L's Cleveland Works in 1962. The experience gained operating both shops provided the background for the design of the new steelmaking complex at the Aliquippa Works. This new complex consists of a three (3) furnace shop with two (2) furnaces blowing alternately producing heats ranging from 120 to 207 tons. This variation in heat size is predicated on the requirement that approximately 20% of the shop production will be used to supply steel to a six (6) strand casting machine, producing 4' through 7" billets. The new B.O.F. shop has replaced all other steelmaking units including the #1 Shop, where operations were discontinued in September of 1968. With the advent of the strand casting facilities in September of 1969, many of the standard shop practices had to be changed to compensate for higher tap temperatures, longer handling times, and reduced ladle availability. The subsequent changes in these areas led to the evolution of the strand cast ladle practice which is described in this paper.

PRODUCTION of magnesium metal in the United States during the past decade has increased from less than 600,000 lb. in 1928 to more than 4,800,000 lb. in 1938.1 The growing industry has stimulated interest in methods of production and in sources of raw material. All of the present domestic production is from brines. However, the availability of large tonnages of magnesite in the state of Washington, together with the possibility of cheap power, have created interest in the utilization of magnesite for the production of magnesium metal as well as for other purposes. Magnesite, the carbonate of magnesium (MgC03), usually is associated with lime-stone (CaCO3) and dolomite (MgC03 CaCO3). It occurs in crystalline and microcrystalline (sometimes termed amor-phous) forms.2 The more common crystal-line mineral is found in various shades of white, gray, yellow and brown, the colors being due to impurities, chiefly iron. Magnesite has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.5 and a specific gravity of 3.0 to 3.1. It forms rhombohedral crystals in the hexagonal system, having a vitreous, pearly luster. The quarries and mines of the Northwest Magnesite Co. near Chewelah, Wash., are large producers of magnesite for refractories.

A REFERENCE to the geological map of Alabama shows the coal- measures of that State to form three distinct fields. The Coosu, or most easterly, contains about one hundred square miles ; the Cahaba, or middle field, which is also the most southern true coal in the United States, contains about 230 square miles ; and the Warrior field, which contains in the State of Alabama some 5000 square miles, is the southern extremity of the great carboniferous deposit, which extends through Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. But very little has yet been done towards developing those coal- fields, partly owing to the absence of all commercial manufacturing enterprise in the South under slavery, and partly owing to the want of capital and the disturbed condition of the South since the war. This paper is an account of exploration for bauxite in the Amazon Basin, Brazil, and particularly of the discovery, exploration and development of the Trombetas deposits by Alcan. A general report of the Trombetas Project has already been published in E/MJ(Anon. 1975) to which the reader is referred for details on ownership, infrastructure and construction as well as the proposal for mining and treating the bauxite. A regional account of bauxite in and around the Guyana Shield and the northern part of the Brazilian Shield is included to help explain the geology of the Trombetas deposits and their relation to other bauxites in northern South America. It is suggested that all these deposits formed during Tertiary time under similar geologic conditions.

The formation of slip bands in crystalline solids undergoing plastic deformation has recently been treated as a problem of nu-cleation and growth.' A simplified theory was developed and shown to be qualitatively consistent with certain experimental observations reported in the literature, such as the frequent failure of slip bands to traverse the entire crystal, the effect of specimen diameter and temperature on the yield stress, and the occurrence of incubation periods in the deformation of suddenly loaded crystals. The theory further predicts the appearance of transients in the rate of strain of a crystal when the applied stress is suddenly changed from one constant value to another. A transient consists of a discontinuous change in the strain rate followed by a gradual approach to a steady-state value. Such transient behavior apparently has not been recognized in previous experimental work. The preliminary experiments reported in the present paper were undertaken to confirm the existence of the predicted transients and thus to determine whether a more detailed treatment of the nucleation theory of slip might be theoretically and experimentally fruitful. Experimental Procedure A simple creep apparatus was assembled as shown in Fig I. Very little insulation was used on the furnace in order to facilitate rapid changes of temperature. Temperature was measured with a thermometer placed in the center of the furnace and was controlled by adjusting the Variac setting. The specimens were cold-headed in split-cylinder grips. Magnitude and Econonmic Importance THE magnitude and economic importance of the problem of correctly valuing natural-gas leaseholds become evident when we consider that: (a) Natural gas is handled in 55 per cent. of the gas distributing plants in the United States. (b) Present known natural-gas acreage forms 47 per cent. of the total known mineral-land acreage in the United States. (c) Five acres of land are now required to protect and maintain continuous service to each of the 2,000,000 domestic natural-gas consumers in the United States. (d) The cost of acquiring and maintaining this acreage of an expendible resource represents a substantial part of the cost of the natural-gas service to the consumer. (e) "The right of a citizen by means of his ownership of or his mining leases on land to draw gas from beneath its surface is property and sometimes valuable property."1 A large number of other court decisions have established the basic legal principle that the right to drill for gas within a given area constitutes an interest in the land itself, and is necessarily an exclusive property right.
