INTRODUCTION Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, and its subsidiary companies, operate and manage mining, beneficiation, and pelletizing operations in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the province of Ontario, Canada, and the State of Western Australia, Australia. The concentrates and natural ores vary mineralogically, physically and chemically. This paper describes the techniques employed in pelletizing the various concentrates and ore fines. The plant operations described are the Republic, Humboldt, Tilden, Empire and Pioneer in Michigan, the Adams and Sherman in Ontario, and the Robe River in Western Australia. Table 1 contains further details regarding design and operating capacities, commissioning dates, and participant ownerships. Allis-Chalmers grate-kiln systems are utilized in Michigan and Ontario, and Dravo straight-grate systems in Western Australia. Currently, the Empire and Tilden operations are being expanded. At Empire the additional pelletizing unit, identified as Unit IV, will have a design capacity of 8 996 metric tonne/d and is scheduled for startup May 1, 1979. The Tilden operation is being doubled with the additional pelletizing unit, identified as Unit 11, having a de- sign capacity of 12 599 metric tonne/d. Startup is scheduled for January 1, 1980. BELOW the nose of the bainitic C curves in isothermal transformation diagrams, the rate of the austenite-to-bainite transformation usually decreases with decreasing temperature. However, in some steels and iron-carbon alloys, there is a noticeable acceleration in the initial reaction rate at temperatures just above Ms. Such speeding-up of the bainitic transformation would be understandable at temperatures just below Ms because of the catalytic effect of the martensite formed,' but the reversal in isothermal kinetics just above Ms seems quite anomalous. This behavior was observed by Howard and Cohen' in a 1.35 pct C steel and, on the basis of metallo-graphic examination, it was attributed to the formation of a thin plate-like product not belonging in the bainitic sequence. More recently, schaaber2 found two-stage reactions occurring in the vicinity of Ms in a number of steels, and suggested that the first stage might be the isothermal formation of marten-site, preceding the isothermal formation of bainite in the second stage. The Hasancelebi iron deposit in Eastern Turkey is a very low grade (average 20% oxide) magnetite body consisting of 720 million longtons of proven reserve at a 10% cut-off limit. The ore-bearing scapolitic oclcs cover an area of approximately 4300m x 300m, and the thickness of the outcropping deposit exceeds 300m. Prefeasibility project studies revealed that a one degree decrease in a 45° final slope angle of the proposed pit would require excavation of approximately 10 million cubic meters of excess waste material, for a projected pit bottom 300 meters below the valley floor. There- fore, determination of the final slope angles of the open pit was considered to be the most important task in the feasibility analysis of this project. In this investigation, the main emphasis was given to collection, compilation and evaluation of the engineering geological, hydrogeological and rock mechanics data of the highly fractured and weathered rocks. Due to the presence of intense fracturing, the rock wedge analysis method was used for projected 30m-high benches and the circular failure analysis method was used for the stability of the projected final pit slopes. The proposed bench slope angles ranged between 60° and 80°, whereas the projected final slope angles varied between 30° and 48°, depending on the slope heights and groundwater levels.

EVEN the highest purity silicon available for semiconductor use contains significant amounts of donors and acceptors, usually aluminum, phosphorus, and boron. Aluminum and phosphorus can be removed from silicon by adaptations of the zone refining techniques' widely used with germanium. Removal of boron, however, has been a difficult problem. The approximate distribution coefficient for boron in silicon is 0.8, so that while zone refining is possible, it is not very effective in any reasonable number of passes. It has been found, however, that boron can be effectively removed from silicon by treatment of a liquid zone with hydrogen and water vapor. IN THE southwestern Wisconsin zinc district, lying in Lafayette, Grant, and Iowa Counties, and the adjoining territory in northwestern Illinois, the orebodies are generally small, and are mined out in a few years. Many of the mines are developed with an expectation of five years or less of actual production. For this reason, as well as for considerations of economy, certain features in the development practice, which have been worked out with a view toward keeping the ratio of time required for, development to that occupied by actual production as small as possible, are of interest. ORGANIZATION The organization of a crew for, this work is as follows: Inasmuch as speed in sinking is desirable, the shaft crew comprises three shifts working 8 hr. each. In the smaller shafts, running up to 6 by 12 ft. (1.8 by 3.6 in.) in size, two men are employed on a shift; in larger shafts an additional man is usually employed. A mine foreman, or ground boss, has general control of the work of the three shifts. He is usually with the crew on the first and the early part of the second shifts, and plans the work to be done for the third shift when it comes on. His schedule, of course, is flexible and when pump changes, or other special conditions warrant, he, arranges his working time to suit the occasion. The surface crew for a sinking operation is made up of two hoistermen, each working 12-hr. shifts. Since the various operations in the shaft must be conducted in succession,. and not in combination, one with the other, separate attendance for hoisting and general plant is unnecessary. Drilling is done when no hoisting is necessary and vice versa. The hoisterman trams out and dumps the excavated material which the crew in the shaft is mucking, as a part of his regular hoisting work.

THIS paper is not intended to be a technical discussion of square-set framing as used in mines, but merely a short description of the different kinds of framing that have been used in the Butte mines, and what has been decided upon, after years of practical experience, as being the best, taking into consideration the physical condition of the veins and country rock, and. also the supply of timber available for mining purposes. Butte is, essentially, a square-set district. Virginia City, Nev., was the first mining camp to use this method of timbering, and to Philip Deidesheimer, who went to the Ophir mine in 1860, is given the credit of solving the problem of square-set framing, where large bodies of ore were stoped and the timbers were supposed to hold the ground from caving without any filling. That he did his work well is shown by the fact that the main features of his framing are in use to-day. In the Butte mines the conditions are such that this method of timbering is generally used. We do not, of course, depend upon the timbers any more than is necessary. The worked-out stopes are filled with waste rock as close behind the miners as possible and not interfere with mining operations. The waste rock is obtained from development work on the different levels or from the surface. In the earlier days of mining in Butte there were numerous independent companies and naturally there were different ideas as to the best way to frame the square sets, although the general features were the same.

AN extensive program of investigation is being carried out at Lehigh University in the study of arcs and arc welds of high-purity iron1, spon-sored by the Engineering Foundation. The part of that program reported in the present paper deals with welds made of high-purity iron in an argon atmosphere and for comparison with them welds made of the same iron in ordinary air. Welds of commercial steel also were made in argon and in air. The primary purpose of the study is to discover the basic physical constants of iron welds when not contaminated either by impurities in the iron or by the action of oxygen and nitrogen of the air during welding. Upon these constants can be founded such future studies as will determine what effects the various impurities and alloy elements present in steel have upon its welding characteristics, and what influence is exerted by the action of oxygen and nitrogen. The welding of steel involves such a multitude of variables, both of composition and of procedure, that development in the fabrication of this most important metal has necessarily been slow, wasteful, and in many instances discouraging. In the present investigation, the simplest possible condition has been selected; namely, iron practically free from contamination and a nonparticipating atmosphere, the inert gas argon. This simplification reduces the number of variables to a point where more rigid control of the system is possible. Although this study is significant for the contributions it makes to the science of steel fabrication, yet it is hoped that it will not be without value also in increasing knowledge of the nature and behavior of iron and steel in general. THE earliest record of copper production from the state of Utah comes from "The Resources of Utah," by. Mr. Fabian, in 1872, wherein it is stated that the. Mammoth mine of East Tintic was located in 1870 and that the ores yielded a large percentage of copper, silver and gold. It is also stated that shipments had been made to Swansea, England, which assayed between $200 and $300 per ton. The Mammoth-Copperopolis mine was located in, 1870 and sold the year following to an English syndicate. Some copper was shipped to. England and in 1873 there was constructed a 15-stamp mill and two copper smelting furnaces; these were operated a few months and before the end of the year were closed down and the property sold for debt. . This property -vas reorganized in 1879 and is at the present day a producer, though its principal product now is lead and silver. While a certain amount of copper has always been coming from the various lead-silver camps of Utah, the real history of copper in Utah should start with the discovery of the mines in Bingham Canyon, located about 25 miles to the southwest from Salt Lake City.

Restriction and proration of petroleum production have increased materially the difficulties attendant upon the estimation of reserves, particularly in large, "flush" fields. Such practices preclude the use of decline or other curves, from which, under capacity production conditions formerly prevalent, much could be learned as to the ultimate recovery to be expected from a given field or lcase therein. In restricted fields that would produce at many times the low rate allowed by the regulations in force if allowed to flow without restraint, one is forced to use other information than production performance to predict the volume of oil recoverable. Examples are: at Kettleman Hills, California; the Conroc, Van and East Texas fields, Texas; the Iowa field, Louisiana. It is beyond the scope of this paper to apply a definite method to the determination of the reserves in any actual field, therefore the discussion will be limited to a consideration of available methods and an enumeration of important factors governing the accuracy of such estimates. The problem is to determine not only oil in place but recoverable oil in place, for a given field or tract, which is complex and depends not only on the characteristics of the reservoir but also on the plan of development, the production allocation scheme, the rate of production and many other factors. Many data must necessarily be considered, weighed as to inportance, and assigned quantitative values. Estimates of recovery in prorated fields have been discussed by Brace', Shaw2, Snider3 and others. The strength of a jointed-rock mass is not well-understood. It is believed, however, that the behavior of a rock mass is governed by both the intact rock properties and the properties of the discontinuities. Rock research in the past has been concentrated on the determination of intact rock properties. Several studies are presently underway which should provide more insight into the properties of the discontinuities. Few research programs, however, have been undertaken with the intent of studying the composite rock mass behavior where either the intact rock strength or the properties of the discontinuities may control failure. There are three approaches available for studying the behavior of a rock mass, namely, field studies, mathematical models (finite element), and geomechanical models. A geomechanical model has been developed in this study where the strength and failure modes of a model rock mass are studied as a function of intact block geometry, joint orientation, joint properties, and confining pressure. The objective of this study is to gain some insight into the parameters that govern the behavior of a rock mass, which parameters are most important, and when these parameters control. This chapter describes only one phase of the study, the development of equipment for use with the rock-blocks model. The models being tested are approximately 22 x 22 x 6-in. The size varies slightly depending upon the joint orientation used. The equipment developed includes model material molds, reaction frames, loading apparatus, measuring and recording instrumentation, and other accessory equipment pertinent to the operation of a successful study. The problem of increasing blast-furnace efficiency through diminution of flue-dust production while operating with burdens consisting largely of fine ores has of recent years attracted the attention of metallurgists, whether directly or indirectly interested in the economies of iron smelting, and the various methods evolved from theory or practice have been submitted to wide discussion. After the very thorough and, at that time, exhaustive view of the whole subject, which was afforded to the industry by the meeting of this Institute in February, 1912, the subject was again taken up at the meeting of the Verein deutscher Eisenh?ttenleute at D?sseldorf in December, 1912. While American and German conditions are not entirely identical, it may be of interest to give here the words of the gentleman summing up the discussion at the Diisseldorf meeting: " The chief advantage offered by the use of briquettes lies in the fact that disturbances in the furnace, caused mostly by the presence of fine ores in the burden, are avoided, and that blast pressure can be considerably reduced. The resulting economies cannot be overrated, as, with lower blast consumption per ton of product, the installation will be able to take care of increased production. In consequence of lower pressure and speed of blast, heat is more efficiently utilized, flue gas temperature is lowered, and coke particles are less liable to be carried along with the flue dust, of which considerably less is produced. Finally, by increased regularity of operation and higher temperature in the lower parts of the furnace, the quality of the product is improved. The question of briquetting iron ores has grown to be one of the most important in the iron industry, and it is not any more a question of what is the cost of briquetting a ton of ore, but what, in using ore briquettes, is the cost of production of a ton of iron." The purposes of composition are various; one purpose, for instance, is to make a record for the writer's own use, as in a diary. That does not involve responsibility to others. There is also the writing meant to influence opinion-to be persuasive and pleasing. With such writing we need not concern ourselves at this stage of our study. The prime purpose of technical writing is to be informative-to convey information; therefore it must be clear beyond the chance of misunderstanding. Such clearness is impossible if meaningless or ill chosen words are sprinkled through the text. Discard the trivial phrases that are constantly at your elbow. Brush aside a host of vapid superlatives. Metternich exclaimed: "The superlative is the mark of fools". It is a false emphasis, like the underlining in a school-girl's letter. For example, the little word 'very' can be deleted nine times out of ten; it is an impediment to terse and perspicuous writing, as the multitudinous hand-baggage of the British tourist is to his travel. 'Very' supposes comparison. A mine with a 1000-ft. shaft is very deep to the scribe who writes from the Joplin district, in Missouri, but it seems a shallow hole to a man living at Calumet, Michigan. A vein that is 10 feet across may be considered very wide at Cripple Creek, Colorado, but it is only a 'stringer' to the miner at the Homestake, in South Dakota. Ore assaying $20 in gold is very rich at Juneau, Alaska, where 10,000 tons of $1 ore is crushed daily, but it is relatively low-grade to the pocket-miner at Alleghany, in California. It is all a matter of comparison; unless the reader knows your standards of depth, width, or richness, your 'very' has no significance. "Where erosion was very rapid or oxidation very shallow"

During colonial times, Brazil was famous for the richness of her alluvial gold deposits. Paul Ferrand has estimated that the gold produced during the period from 1700 to 1820 was the equivalent of some 64 million pounds sterling. Since that time, most of the more prolific alluvial deposits have been exhausted. A few gold mines are still functioning, notably the Morro Velho mine, which is one of the deepest mines in the world. Today, the gold production of Brazil is insignificant when compared with world figures, but there are still many gold-bearing regions and it is probable that in at least some of them profitable returns would result from an exploitation program taking advantage of all the most modern innovations in gold mining and ore treatment on a large scale. In order to demonstrate the value of some of these abandoned prospects and stir up interest in increasing the national gold production, the government has stimulated research. Experimental plants have been and are being established in various places, and tests on large quantities of ores are being carried out on a semicommercial basis. The Geological Survey of the State of Minas Geraes is very active in this line and the Federal Institution is also showing an increased interest in the matter. One of the lesser known gold-bearing regions of Brazil is in the vicinity of Lavras, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Gold was first reported from this region in the early part of the nineteenth century. In 1811, D. João VI sent an experienced prospector from Minas Geraes to investigate the validity of the reports. According to the reports of Baron Eschwege, he succeeded in extracting some 30,000 Oitavos (about 105 kg.) during the first few years, but the production costs exceeded the value of the gold obtained.

The stability of a rock structure depends primarily upon the extent to which fracture develops within the structure, The prediction of the extent of potential fracture, the first step in the study of fracture development, involves a knowledge of both the stress distribution in the structure and the criterion which governs rock fracture under various stress conditions. While a great deal of research effort has been devoted to the development of techniques for analyzing the stresses in mining and civil engineering structures1-3 and to the investigation of the fracture mechanism of rock 4-6 relatively little attention has been paid to the application of available knowledge to the solution of practical engineering problems. This paper describes a photoelastic technique for the determination of potential fracture zones in certain types of rock structures. A practical example, based upon a problem which might be encountered in designing the layout of deep-level mine excavations, is given as an illustration of the application of this technique. STRESS ANALYSIS AND ROCK FRACTURE In deciding upon the technique to be used for the solution of a problem involving the prediction of rock fracture it is necessary to consider: 1) What type of stress information is required to satisfy the fracture criterion for rock; anti 2) How this information can most conveniently be obtained. PREFERRED orientation studies by Harris of rolled uranium rods indicated that hot rolling to a small reduction of area caused the (010) planes to become strongly oriented and the (110) planes weakly oriented perpendicular to the rolling direc- tion. The relative intensities of these two fiber texture components were reversed upon rolling to higher reductions of area. Cold rolling caused the (010) planes to become strongly aligned and the (130) planes weakly aligned perpendicularly to the rolling direction. The present investigation was undertaken to explore in more detail the effect on the rolling texture of variables, such as the penultimate condition, the final rolling temperature and reduction of area. In addition, the recrystallization texture of rolled uranium rods was also investigated.

During the earlier period of electrical prospecting, the search for orebodies was by far the most important application of this method of geophysical prospecting. In the past few years, however, increasing attention has been paid to the possibilities of this method in the investigation of subsurface structures. Not only have fault zones been located, but attempts have been made to determine the depth to certain strata and thus contouring on some bed which proves to be a good "electrical marker." Many workers have published the results of field tests showing how their particular interpretations have agreed with the actual field conditions, but very few have stated their method of interpretation. Weaver, Hummel and Stefanesco and Schlumbergerl have given a more theoretical discussion of the resistivity methods. Hummel and Stefan-esco and Schlumberger have published mathematical solutions for the flow of electricity in a medium involving four layers. In this paper the authors present a solution for the flow of electricity in a medium of any number of horizontal strata. By means of this solution, curves showing the relationship between the apparent resistivity and the electrode spacing can be computed for ideal cases.
