Introduction For the past year and a half, the mill of Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, McKenzie Island, Ontario has been roasting arsenopyrite-gold concentrates, prior to cyanidation, by means of a roaster employing techniques that are new and novel. The roaster is known as the Dorrco 'fluo-solids reactor', and the technique as 'fluidization'. The reactor has demonstrated its ability to roast a flotation concentrate containing arsenopyrite, pyrite, stibnite, small quantities of other sulphides, and some lime silicates and carbonates, yielding a calcine consisting mainly of porous iron oxide, plus the gold values. This calcine is readily amenable to cyanidation. Bulk shipments of concentrates to a distant custom smelter, as practised prior to this installation, has thus been eliminated, with appreciable savings in smelting charges, freight costs, and interest losses during shipment and smelting. This is the pioneer installation of fluo-solids roasting at a Canadian mill and up to the present performance results have not been published. It is the purpose of this paper to present the information now available for the benefit of other millmen who may be confronted with identical or similar problems to those encountered and solved at Cochenour Willans.

Solid mattes are generally held to be either (a) eutectiferous mixtures of the component sulphides Cu2S and FeS or (b) mixtures of complex sulphides. This chapter shows that liquid mattes consist essentially of a homogeneous phase in which iron, copper and sulphur are present. The amount of sulphur is generally less than that required to account for all the metals as stoichiometric sulphides; mattes cannot therefore be regarded as mixtures of FeS and Cu2S. Some iron oxide may be dissolved in the sulphide phase and magnetite is often present as a second phase. If the sulphur content of the matte is reduced the composition enters the miscibility gap in the ternary system and either an iron- or copper-rich solution (depending upon the composition of the matte) separates as a new phase. On solidification any one of four phases (iron, copper, Cu2S and FeS solid solutions) may crystallize as primaries. The remainder of the matte solidifies as a ternary eutectic. It is possible that iron oxides enter into this eutectic. Knowledge of the ternary Cu-Fe-S system is far from complete and nothing is known of the quaternary system Cu-Fe-S-O

"SUMMARYThis report on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines presents compilations of inspection test data furnished on their products by manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline, and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on samples of these gasolines. Data and physical samples for the survey were submitted by 15 manufacturers on 18 grade 80, 21 grade 91/98, 22 grade 100/130, end 10 grade 115/145 aviation fuels.The inspection test data supplied by the participating manufacturers consist of octane and performance numbers, tetraethyllead content, dye color, and other characteristics usually listed in aviation gasoline specifications, such as AN-F-48a or ASTM Designation D910-47T. These data are tabulated and averaged by grades in tables 1 through 4 and, as reported, meet the AN-F-48a and similar specifications with a few exceptions. Two grade 80 gasolines show a lean-mixture octane rating slightly below 80.0, and 91/98 grade fuel shows a lean-mixture rating of 90.9 and a rich-mixture rating of 97.5, two 100/130 grade gasolines have a rich-mixture performance number slightly below 130.0, and one 115/145 grade gasoline shows a rich-mixture performance number of 144.5. However, octane and performance number averages are above the mini¬mum requirements for each grade. Tetraethyllead content in the 91/98 and 100/ 130 grades generally is above the maximum outlined in these specifications, whereas dye color for each of the four grades, with the exception of two gasolines in grades 80 and 100/130, is that designated for the particular grade. Distillation requirements, with a few exceptions at individual points, are met by gasolines of all grades. Reid-vapor-pressure, copper-dish-residue, heat-of-combustion or aniline-gravity-constant, freezing-point, and copper-strip-corrosion requirements are met by all gasolines so far as reported. No data for some of these tests wore submitted on a few of the gasolines. One gasoline, grade 115/145, shows a sulfur content greater than the specified maximum."

Groundfall accidents have been the leading cause of fatalities in the underground coal mining industry for many years. Statistics from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) indicate that approximately half of the victims of these fatal accidents were in an area where no devices had been installed to support the mine roof. This report was prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to provide guidance to operators of underground mines concerning the use of techniques that may help to keep miners from going under unsupported mine roof. The report is divided into two major sections. The first section reviews the findings from several areas of empirical research pertaining to strategies for convincing employees to avoid unsafe acts and/or adopt self-protective behaviors. The strategies are (1) incentives and feedback, (2) disciplinary actions, (3) training (primarily fear communications and behavioral modeling), and (4) nondirective techniques. This literature review has a broad focus and should be helpful in making decisions about how to encourage a wide variety of types of self-protective behaviors. The second major section of the report presents an analysis of each strategy's potential for keeping miners away from unsupported roof.

A project is underway to convert a validated methodology to a system that will permit the near real time interpretation of loading data from longwall powered supports, allowing rapid adaptation of mining strategies, maintenance scheduling and set pressures for optimal roof control. Such a system has the potential to significantly reduce roof control problems and is a pre-requisite to successfully fully automating a longwall face. The development depended upon a robust methodology for interpreting the pressure sensor data coming from the face in the context of support strata interaction using a novel characteristic load cycle analysis concept. New software was developed capable of handling the large quantity of data emanating from a modern longwall with the current level of signal corruption and loss, accurately delineating load cycles and extracting the critical load cycle features essential for interpreting how the support and strata are interacting. Existing software being used to access the pressure data were found either to be incapable of delineating load cycles at all or, where they could, the accuracy was low, making it impractical to use them in combination with the new advances in load cycle analysis. The software is currently being extended from ?off line? to ?on line? in order to provide a real time response to changing strata conditions.

At the Twin Cities "lining Research Center (TCMRC) a project is underway to determine how varying the parameters of a coal-cutting process would affect the amount and the size distribution of the generated dust. The cutting parameters being investigated are the cutting speed, depth of cut and shape of the cutting, tool. To accomplish this research ft is necessary to collect and transport the coal dust venerated at the cutting tool to measuring instruments for analysis. The purpose of this contract was to develop and deliver a system of instruments for measuring the size distributions of the generated coal dust. The instruments employed are essentially those developed for particulate air pollution measurements (1, 2). The instrument system covers a particle size range of 0.005 to 20 microns and is capable of performing in situ measurement and presenting data in real time.

In historic mining practice, typical thin liner support systems have been considered to comprise non-reinforced or mesh-reinforced shocrete linings. In the early 1990?s, development of alternate forms of liner systems was initiated in Canada which is now undergoing significant international growth in countries which sustain major mining activity. Now internationally designated as thin, spray-on liner systems, a wide spectrum of liner materials, ranging from liquid/liquid to liquid/solid component combinations, has become commercially available. This innovative family of products is characteristically identified as being rapidly deployable, capable of creating ultra-fast setting coverage over rock surfaces, and able to develop tenacious adhesion and pull strength capacities for resisting rock falls and movements. This paper presents a summary of current liner developments and use in principal mining districts world wide. Additionally, a database of material properties for principal product types used in mining and a review of common quality control testing procedures under development are provided. Such information is based upon recent Canadian and international efforts being taken to assess and develop user standards for the implementation of thin, spray-on liners as rock support in mines. This work is intended to continue for a period of years, with the eventual goal being to establish support and installation guidelines for mines based on quantifiable laboratory and field research.

Electrical trailing cable used to power coal mining machinery is frequently damaged by tensile strain or crushing by mining machines running over the cable. A prototype electrostatic/electromagnetic/ TDR transmitter and an electrostatic/electro-magnetic receiver sot that: o Locates cable faults by time domain reflectometry o Locates opens by detecting electrostatic signals o Locates shorts by electromagnetic coupling. 2. A prototype infrared detector and an infrared detector power supply that heats a shorted area by applying high current (at low voltage) and locating a short by infrared output. 3. Twelve production infrared detectors. 4. Detail drawings for all of the developed instruments.

An 18-in-diam column water elutriator was designed, tested, and operated by the Bureau of Mines for recovering nonferrous mixed metals from automobile shredder rejects. The waver elutriator separated metals from nonmetals contained in shredded nonmagnetic rejects. The unit was constructed and integrated into a local automobile shredding operation. Nonmagnetic rejects from the automobile shredder were fed onto the surface of a column of rising water. Dense materials fell through the rising water and were collected as a sink product at the bottom of the column; medium-density materials were removed as an intermediate product in a water flow through a discharge port located between the overflow and sink; and light materials were immediately carried out in the overflowing water at the top of the column as a float product. Nearly 99 pct of the mixed metals were recovered from the nonmagnetic rejects as a 70-pct-metal concentrate. Other operating conditions yielded a 93.7-pct-pure-metal product resulting in a 93.1-pct metal recovery. Float rejects are combustibles, light plastics, foam rubber, and minimal amounts of coated and uncoated copper wire. The middling discharge contained mainly medium-density rubber, plastics, glass, rock, coated and uncoated copper wire, and frequently some thin-sheet stainless steel and wrought aluminum. Maximum metal recovery in the operating program was achieved using a water velocity of 52 fpm (650 gpm). Maximum purity was obtained with a velocity of 88 fpm (1,100 gpm). .Water was recycled through a 12,000-gal baffled clarifying tank. Entrainment water losses with the float and middling rejects averaged 50 gpt of reject feed. Records maintained by the shredder operator show a 34-pct increase in nonmagnetic metals recovery during a 1-yr operation of the water elutriator as compared to recoveries from a previously used air classification system.

1.1 DEVELOPMENT OF INDUCTANCE MATRICES The basic building block in this analytical work is the development of an equivalent circuit. The equivalent circuit for the cable depends on all of the distributed parameters of the cable although the series inductance and resistance are of primary importance. The cable resistances are generally available from handbooks or from cable manufacturers. On the other hand, the cable inductances are not usually available either from handbooks or from the manufacturer's published data. Thus, it is useful to summarize the derivation of the origin of the inductance matrix from basic principles. 1.1.1 Flux Around a Cylindrical Conductor The flux pattern around a cylindrical current carrying conductor can be found by using symmetry in conjunction with Ampere's Law. From symmetry it is clear that the flux lines which always close on themselves must be concentric circles. Thus, from symmetry alone one can get a qualitative picture of the magnetic field. This is shown in Fig. 1.1 where the inner circle represents the solid round conductor and the outer circle represents a flux line. The quantitative picture will now be developed using Ampere's Law.

Precast concrete segments have been used in sanitary sewer tunnel design for decades. Federal mandates (reduction in heavy metals and I & I), and system design changes (increased retention times) and other factors have exacerbated corrosion problems. In an effort to combat the ever-growing effect of microbiologically induced corrosion, owners, engineers, and designers have been specifying thin-film lining systems to protect precast concrete segments. These systems have compatibility and installation issues. Chemical additives or calcareous aggregates have been utilized in precast concrete, but have only proven to retard the rate of corrosion and do not eradicate the problem. Solid cast polymer segments are stronger than precast concrete, do not require linings or coatings, are impervious to ground water infiltration, and, above all, are inherently corrosion resistant through and through.

The mechanization of the coal industry in New South Wales involved the introduction of large face and transport machines. The trend is towards still higher capacity units with .greater horsepower and it became apparent that a potential risk of damage to the hearing of workmen existed. In order to assess whether the sound levels were SUfficiently high to impair the hearing of workmen a sound level survey of all major operations in the industry was carried out by the Mining Engineering Division of the Joint Coal Board.The results indicated ·that the operations could be classified into three categories of risk, probably hazardous, of doubtful hazard due to the intermittency of the operations, and of low hazard.Legislation has subsequently been enacted requiring the wearing of hearing preservation aids in some of the probable risk operations.

In order to provide an initial approach to the deposits of oil shale, nahcolite, and dawsonite in the central area of the Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado, the U.S.B.M. and associated contractor personnel drilled and cased a 96-inch ID shaft to a depth of 2,371 feet. The shaft was constructed using "big hole" drilling techniques and succeeded in giving access to previously inaccessible deposits of the above minerals. This report documents the construction from its beginning in January 1977 to its completion in January 1978. Procedures used and problems encountered are discussed in derail.

To reduce fire hazards from spontaneous combustion of coal in longwall gob areas, a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to model the spontaneous heating of coal in longwall gob areas. The previous modeling results demonstrate that spontaneous heating of coal usually occurred behind the longwall shields and along the face with a bleeder ventilation system. Assuming a stationary longwall face, the spontaneous heating could turn to a spontaneous fire in several days for the most reactive coal under favorable conditions. When the longwall face advances, the spontaneous heating process will be significantly affected. In this study, the effect of longwall face advance on the spontaneous heating in the gob area is investigated using the CFD model developed in previous studies. One longwall panel with a bleeder ventilation system is simulated. The width of the panel is 300 m, while the length of the panel is changed between 1,000 to 2,000 m. The same permeability and porosity profiles are used for gobs with different lengths. The spontaneous heating first develops in the gob when the longwall face is stationary. Then, the face advances at a certain rate. The face advance is simulated as a series of discrete movements, and the effect of the face advance on the maximum temperature developed during the face stoppage is examined. THE o phases have a complex tetragonal structure with Lo/ao = 0.52 and 30 atoms per unit cell.1 A large number of such phases are now known to occur in various binary systems of the transition elements and they exhibit the following typical features: 2,3 The composition of binary o phases is variable, ranging from approximately A4B to ABI. With only a few exceptions, in the o phases the A-ele-ment comes from the V- or Cr- group of the periodic table, while the B-elements are from the Mn-, Fe-, Co-, or Ni- group. In the first long period the corresponding o phases of the V- and Cr-series have approximately the same compositions. However, as the B-element changes from Mn to Fe to Co to Ni, the mean composition shifts monotonously toward higher A-contents.2-4 For example, if the mean compositions of the various o phases with vanadium are compared with each other, the composition shift mentioned above becomes plainly visible: V 30Mn0 80 Vo.45Feo..,, Vo .,Coo. 45 and Vo.5Nio.3. Similiar composition shifts, although not the same composition values, were observed in u phases formed by second and by third long-period transition elements.3'4 This behavior, very characteristic of o phases, is in rather sharp contrast to the usually quite well-behaved stoichi-ometry of the Laves phases. In the latter, the AB2 stoichiometry predominates, with A the large atom and B the small atom.= The p phase occurs in the four binary systems of Mo or W with Fe or Co. On the basis of their crystal structure determination, Arnfelt and westgren6 ascribed to the p phase in the Co-W system the ideal composition W,Co7. Since all four binary pphases have nearly the same composition, it would seem quite plausible that some definite stoichiometry such as A6B7, might be characteristic of this phase, as AB2 is of the Laves phases. On the other hand, it has been noted,7 that the phases occur at average electron concentrations near to those at which the various cr phases are found. Also, it has been pointed out by Shoemaker and associates8 that structurally the a phases and the p phases are somewhat related to each other; both of these structures may be described in terms of suitable stackings of quasi-hexagonal layers'of atoms. By studying a suitably chosen ter- nary phase diagram, one might expect to be able to find out which one of the two conditions, the analogy with the o phase or the constant ratio between the number of large atoms and the number of small atoms in effect governs the behavior of the p phase. Several isothermal sections of ternary systems containing o phases have been investigated. In all cases where two binary o phases occur, these were found to be connected b a more or less straight ternary o phase field.7' '10 Such elongated o phase fields were also found in ternary systems in which only one of the limiting binaries is known to contain o phase. In this manner a latent o forming tendency could be detected and the virtual composition of a "binary o phase", which does not actually occur as such was approximately determined by extrapolation. The behavior of the phases, including their composition shift, is analogous to that of the classical electron compounds, as described by Hume-Rothery.11 In order to decide whether the p phase is essentially a "size compound" like the Laves phases, where a fixed stoichiometric ratio is quite generally maintained between the "large atoms" and the "small atoms", or whether the p phase is typically an "electron compound" in the same sense as ois, it was decided to investigate an isothermal section of the Mo-Mn-Co system. The Mo-Co system12 and the Mo-Mn system13 each are known to have a binary o phase. It could be therefore expected that a ternary o phase field will connect these two binary cr-phase fields. The p phase is known to occur in the Mo-Co system. If the p phase should turn out to form an elongated phase field extending deep into the ternary system, the following considerations mighto apply. The atomic radius of manganese (1.314for C.N.12) is between the va,lues for Mo (1.40Afor C.N.12) and for Co (1.26Afor C.N.12). If it is assumed that p is a "size compound", and that Mn is substituting for the smaller Co atoms in the p-structure in the ternary system, the y-phase field might be expected to extend parallel to the Mn-Co binary line. If Mn is substituting for the large Mo atoms in the p-structure, the p-phase field may be expected to extend parallel to the Mn-Mo binary line. On the other hand, if the p-phase turns out to be an "electron compound" like o, the ternary p-phase field should extend parallel to the ternary o -phase field connecting (Mo,Mn)owith (Mo, Co) a

Methane gas caused an eight-month shutdown of mining operations at the Mill Creek, Phase 3, Tunnel. The gas-related shutdown occurred as the tunnel was advanced to an approximate distance of 2,700 feet, which constitutes approximately18% of the total tunnel length. The construction of an emergency ventilation shaft, a comprehensive program of de-gassing wells and an expanded gas monitoring system were used to mitigate the gas condition. When complete, this tunnel will be utilized to convey and store combined storm and sanitary sewage collected from a portion of Cleveland, Ohio and ten suburbs. This paper will provide an overview of gas related remedial measures and explain how these measures were integrated into the project to ensure safe tunneling conditions.

Passive methods of treating mine water use chemical and biological processes that decrease metal concentrations and neutralize acidity. Compared with conventional chemical treatment, passive methods generally require more land area, but use less costly reagents and require less operational attention and maintenance. Currently, three types of passive technologies exist: aerobic wetlands, organic substrate wetlands, and anoxic limestone drains. Aerobic wetlands promote mixed oxidation and hydrolysis reactions, and are most effective when the raw mine water is net alkaline. Organic substrate wetlands promote anaerobic bacterial activity that results in the precipitation of metal sulfides and the generation of bicarbonate alkalinity. Anoxic limestone drains generate bicarbonate alkalinity and can be useful for the pretreatment of mine water before it flows into a wetland. Rates of metal and acidity removal for passive systems have been developed empirically by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Aerobic wetlands remove Fe and Mn from alkaline water at rates of 10-20 and 0.5- 1.0 g. m-2? d-1, respectively. Wetlands with a composted organic substrate remove acidity from mine water at rates of 3-9 g. m-2? d-1?. A model for the design and sizing of passive treatment systems is presented in this report.

"INTRODUCTION Sporadic beneficiation tests have been made on the Birmingham (Ala.) red iron ores for the last 55 years. Now, gravity-concentration plants are in operation, of tables are in use. A major problem, as seen by the present writers, is to obtain a coarser concentrate and add to the recovery without increasing the quantity of slime. The oily practicable solution found so far is to recover, by means of concentration (hydraulic) classifiers, the coarse concentrate normally lost in the table middling and, by a similar method, to recover middling particles from the table tailings The size and shape of the coarse concentrate Particles combine to cause them to report in the table middling rather than in the table concentrate. Similarly, mineral is lost in the tailing. Because of this, the nature of the ore, the deportment jerking table, plant tests on classifiers and tables, and the suitability of small concentration classifiers to treat table zonal middlings are discussed herein.The work was done by the Southern Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala."
